Day 1 arrival to moscow.

Welcome to Moscow! Upon your arrival a private transfer to a five-star hotel in the historic city centre near the Bolshoi Theatre and Moscow Kremlin. Enjoy a warm-up meeting with your guide and fellow guests.

Day 2 Moscow

Gold Program: Get a picture-perfect introduction to Moscow with an orientation tour of the city.

Afterwards, we are heading to the famous Novodevichi Convent – one of the most beautiful Moscow’s attractions, which was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The convent provides an example of the highest accomplishments of Russian architecture with rich interiors and an important collection of paintings and artefacts.

The evening is free to enjoy at your leisure or seek out a cultural performance at one of the city’s renowned venues.

Platinum/Imperial Program:  Begin the day with an orientation tour of Moscow. The city boasts unique diversity and variety in terms of building styles: classic, modern, empire and eclecticism amazingly sit alongside more monumental designs, such as Stalin’s towering skyscrapers from the mid-20th century. The architecture of the capital, though seemingly contradictory and contrasting, makes for a dazzling combination in a quite unique city.

Lunch is served in a restaurant on the top floor of one of Moscow’s skyscrapers offering spectacular city views. After lunch, visit the famous Novodevichi Cemetery, where well-known Russian authors, musicians, playwrights, and poets, are buried along with famous actors, political leaders, and scientists.

Day 3 Moscow

Gold Program: Today we start with a walking tour of the city centre. Stroll along the Red Square, where many great events in Russian history have taken place, see the sublimely beautiful Saint Basils Cathedral and GUM Department Store.

Next, we observe Kremlins Armoury Chamber to explore its collection of opulent coronation finery, hand-forged armour and weapons, royal carriages and sleighs. Continue to the beautifully frescoed 15thcentury Assumption and Archangel cathedrals.

The rest of the day is left open for independent exploration: for example, you may walk to the new park Zaryadye located near the Kremlin and Red Square or choose any one of several optional tours.

Platinum/Imperial Program:  The morning consists of a stroll through the famous Moscow Kremlin with its beautiful cathedrals and unique museums. The Armory hosts an impressive collection of opulent coronation finery, hand-forged armor and ancient weapons, royal carriages and sleighs.

After lunch, cross Red Square to visit GUM, Moscow’s largest department store. Then proceed with a leisurely walk through the newly designed park Zaryadye, a stone’s throw from the Kremlin and Red Square.

Day 4 Moscow

Gold Program: This morning is free for you to enjoy an independent walk in the nearby area. You may want to check some famous historical streets such as Tverskaya and Arbat which overflowing with history and atmosphere. Catch street performers as they charm passers-by and watch Moscow’s local artists at work.

At noon, after check-out from your hotel, we are heading to the Tretyakov Gallery - the first museum dedicated exclusively to Russian fine art. The gallery hosts a collection of over 130,000 masterpieces from early religious paintings to works by Russia’s most influential modern artists.

In the evening we transfer to the awaiting luxurious MS Volga Dream to begin sailing along the Russian waterways. Gather for the Captain's welcome reception and dinner as we begin our cruise.

Platinum/Imperial Program:  The first stop after checking-out of your hotel is a small and cozy former home-estate once owned by one of Russia’s literary greats, Leo Tolstoy. He lived with his wife and thirteen children in this two-storey wooden Moscow house from 1882 to 1901; it is now a carefully preserved memorial.The sightseeing continues after lunch at the State Tretyakov Gallery with its extraordinary collection of Russian art, ranging from Rublev's 12th century icons to 19th century masterpieces. Explore Moscow’s Metro, famed for its architectural splendour.

Meanwhile, the luxurious MS Volga Dream awaits and your voyage along Russia’s extensive waterways is about to begin. The Captain's welcome reception and dinner mark the start of our unforgettable cruise.

Day 5 Uglich

After a full day of cruising through the beautiful forested countryside, dock in the ancient trading town of Uglich, one of the spokes of Russia’s renowned Golden Ring, is known for its magnificent cathedrals.

Explore the impressive Church of St. Dmitri-on-the blood, erected on the site where Dmitri, son of Ivan the Terrible, was murdered in 1591, and attend an enchanting concert of choral music at St. John’s Church. After the tour, you return to your ship and watch the documentary film "Construction of the Moscow Canal"

Day 6 Yaroslavl

Today you’ll visit one of the oldest cities in Russia and the Volga’s first port - Yaroslavl. On a guided tour you’ll visit the Spassky Monastery with the icon Transfiguration of the Savior. Admire the unique mosaics at the Church of Elijah the Prophet and take part in a costumed reception at the governor’s house. Afterwards, we return to the cruise ship for lunch.

In the evening you can join a costumed Russian tea ceremony and Russian cooking class.

Day 7 Goritsy

Gold Program: Today we arrive in the tiny settlement of Goritsy, located in the Vologda region. You will feel like you are in medieval times when strolling in this exciting and picturesque town. Here we will visit the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery, founded in 1397, and now home to one of the finest collections of Russian icons in the world. After a guided tour, continue cruising toward majestic Lake Onega. In the evening, enjoy Russian dinner with vodka tasting on board.

Platinum/Imperial Program:  This morning takes us on an early crossing of Lake Beloye, or the White Lake, once known as the “tsar’s fishing grounds”, before arriving in the peaceful village of Goritsy where we tour the Ferapontov Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with magnificent frescoes by Dionysius, one of Russia’s most renowned icon painters. He painted the temple ceiling about 10 years before Michelangelo even started on the Sistine Chapel! Return to the ship for a late lunch and afternoon cruising.

Day 8 Kizhi in Karelia

One of the most well-known Russian symbols, Kizhi Island on the waters of Lake Onega, which included in the UNESCO heritage list will amaze you! Explore a collection of ancient Russian wooden houses and windmills, and the famous Transfiguration church, built in 1714 without a single nail. It has withstood the Earth's elements for more than 150 years and yet this spectacular church remains the tallest wooden structure in the world.

Enjoy the Piano Concert – pieces by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov, upon returning to the cruise ship.

Day 9 Svirstroy

While cruising along the 139-mile-long Svir River, appreciate the quiet understated beauty of a region that has long inspired artists and poets. The ship passes quaint riverside hamlets before reaching Lake Ladoga. Step ashore for a brief visit to the vacation village of Svirstroy to experience daily life in a quaint wooden village on your own. The village, which was razed to the ground during the Second World War, stands a reproduction of a traditional Russian settlement.

Here, every effort is made to create a warm, homely atmosphere and welcome each guest with personalized attention. Barbeque on the Open Deck will be organised for you upon the returning from the walking tour.

Day 10 St.Petersburg

Gold Program: After cruising along remarkable villages and enjoying picturesque scenery, we finally arrive at St Petersburg – one of Europe’s beautiful cities, the cultural capital of Russia.

Enjoy a tour of the St. Petersburg city centre, including Peter and Paul Fortress, burial place of the Romanov monarchs, and Nevsky Prospect, with its endless fine shops, cafes and museums. 

Platinum/Imperial Program:  The MS Volga Dream ties up in St. Petersburg on the Neva River where we disembark for a city tour, including Peter and Paul Fortress Tour, the Royal Romanov burial site and Nevsky Prospect with its rich selection of fine shops, cafes, and museums.

During lunch you will enjoy the Red Army Choir Performance. After meal we embark on a canal cruise sailing under the city’s many historic bridges and past its magnificent pastel. The day ends with a tour of Yusupov’s Palace – a former home to one of St. Petersburg’s wealthiest aristocrats. The enigmatic story of Grigory Rasputin, the monk assassinated here by Prince Felix Yusupov, is told in this very basement.

Day 11 St.Petersburg

Gold Program: Begin today at the renowned Hermitage Museum, home to one of the most important collections of European art in the world.

Lunch is followed by a tour of the meticulously restored Peterhof, St. Petersburg’s most famous and spectacular Imperial estate, often cited as the Versailles of Russia. Visit the authentic Bath Cottage and stroll in the vast Lower Park with 176 fountains of various forms and styles and four cascades, majestic palaces and numerous gilded statues of ancient gods and heroes. The rest of the day is spent at your leisure or join one of our optional tours.

Platinum/Imperial Program:  The morning takes you to one of the most famous museums in the world, the awe-inspiring Hermitage in the lavishly decorated Winter Palace. (To avoid crowds, we’ve arranged for you, to gain entrance before official opening hours.) After exploring the main galleries of the Hermitage, proceed to the Gold Room, usually closed to general public, with a collection of Scythian gold and elaborate imperial gifts.

Lunch is followed by a tour to the spectacular Imperial estate of Peterhof, often dubbed the Russian Versailles. The vast Lower Park, with its 176 fountains and four cascades, is a glorious place to walk, taking in majestic palaces and numerous gilded statues of ancient gods and heroes.

Day 12 St.Petersburg

Gold Program:  This morning, join one of the optional tours or explore St. Petersburg at your own pace.

In the afternoon, we travel to Pushkin town, where Catherine the Great’s Palace is located. It houses the extraordinary Amber Room, its six tons of solid amber deftly carved and framed in gold leaf. Once deemed the “eighth wonder of the world,” the room was stripped by the Nazis in 1941, but majestically reconstructed in honour of St. Petersburg’s 300th birthday.

Platinum/Imperial Program:  Enjoy a full sightseeing day with a visit to the Fabergé Museum, founded by entrepreneur, Viktor Vekselberg. The museum was opened in December 2013 to display a glittering collection of Faberge eggs and objects d’art created by Peter Carl Fabergé and his staff. Vekselberg's collection is rated as one of the world's most valuable and includes items he bought from the Forbes family in 2004 for $100 million.

After lunch, we travel to the Tsar’s Village to visit the famous Catherine’s Palace and the exquisitely recreated Amber Room. A stroll through the formal gardens is highly recommended. We enter the Pushkin grounds through the Golden Gate and ascend the staircase to the Grand Hall. The Golden Enfilade offers a glorious view of the Amber Room.

Day 13 Departure from St Petersburg

This morning check out from your hotel and transfer to the airport for your flight.

What to pack

Russian weather is famously hard to predict, so make sure to pack a water-resistant jacket and an umbrella.

Keep in mind that most Russian have problems speaking English, so learning a few essential words won't hurt.

Rubles are the Russian currency, and it's wise to always have local money on hand during the trip.

How much to tip

Tipping is not required in Russia, but it's considered good etiquette, tip 10%-15% of your bill.

The average summer temperature in Moscow and St. Petersburg is about 18°C (64°F), so it's better to choose this season for cruising.

Some of the most popular souvenirs from Russia are, of course, matryoshka dolls, ushanka hats, and linen goods. Valenki is also an interesting choice.

Overall, the trip was great.

I would have liked a couple more days in St. Petersburg to visit more of the museums and other attractions. The tour of Catherine's Palace was enjoyable and our guide was excellent. Fortunately, we went into the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood in St. Petersburg the first morning we were there.

The Volga Dream Cruise met or even exceeded our expectations

I really enjoyed the trip. We were very pleased with the hotels in St. Petersburg and Moscow. The accommodations were good and the breakfasts were lavish. But the best part was that both hotels were so well located.

The guides in both cities were knowledgeable. The Hermitage was so crowded that it made it difficult to see things, but I think we saw a good selection of city sites in the limited time available for the tours. I know several people in our group spent extra days in St. Petersburg and Moscow before and after our tour, and I wish we had done the same.

Visiting Russia

Unfortunately, Russia is a country too often sidestepped by many travellers. It has been more than two decades since Russia emerged from behind the Iron Curtain and began welcoming tourists with semi-open arms and a cold stony smile.

However, Russia still carries the stigma of being a difficult country to travel to and in. Thanks mostly to a reputation of complicated, bureaucratic visa processes and rumoured corruption.

Russian Visa Requirements

If you are travelling through Russia on a river cruise, unless you are eligible for the new 16 day e-Visa, most foreign nationals must have a tourist visa.  The Russian visa process can take up to a month or two. It is important to check your visa requirement and make sure you get it submitted well in advance of your intended travel date.

The gradual introduction of the new e-visa is making the process simpler but is restricted for visits of only eight days and specific entry points. Based on this, the e-visa is not suitable for a river cruise in Russia.

Travel in Russia

As independent travellers, our biggest dilemma with Russia is logistics. Russia covers two continents and nine time zones, and the highlights and must-sees are spread far and wide, with nothing in between.

When you don’t have unlimited time or an unlimited budget, the distances can pose some issues. Transport through Russia can be expensive and less than comfortable, and car hire could be a costly alternative.

Cruise St Petersburg to Moscow

For us, opting to travel through Russia on a river cruise was primarily motivated by the itinerary. Most people would be happy to visit Moscow or St Petersburg. But why make an effort to visit this intriguing country and miss all the beautiful and exciting things to see outside of the main cities despite the vast geographic distances.

The Cruise Itinerary

The river cruise itinerary is what sold us on this mode of travel. The itinerary enabled us to spend ample time in St Petersburg and Moscow; then with our floating hotel in tow, we took to the river.

It is here where we saw the other Russia. Stunning countryside, small villages, abandoned churches and majestic cathedrals dotted along the river banks. A view of Russia that speaks volumes about the country’s history and culture.

As we slipped down the river, we had the  White Nights  in our favour so could take advantage of the long days and very short nights of summer. Enjoying the sights of the Russian countryside en route to our next destination. Each day a different destination with a cruising schedule set to maximise time spent ashore.

Waterways of the Tsars Schedule

Seven different destinations are visited in the 13 days onboard. This includes three full days in both Moscow and St Petersburg. We would not have achieved this on our own in the two weeks we had.

St Petersburg & Moscow

Between Moscow and St Petersburg, you can experience the beautiful Golden Ring cities and villages of Russia. These are the towns and cities that lie beyond Russia’s great cities on the Waterways of the Tsars. 

Mandrogy Russia

Mandrogy, built in 1996 as an open-air museum, is a replica of   Verkhine Mandrogi , a Russian village destroyed during WWII. The enterprise was intended to give travellers cruising between St Petersburg and Kizhi a feel for traditional Russian life. 

Unfortunately, we found Mandrogy to be very much that – a fabricated tourist attraction including costumed craftsmen and women with innumerable craft stalls and workshops selling the same trinkets. 

Paint your Own Russian Matryoshka Doll

The central premise for this village appears to be shopping and, of course, the famed Russian Matryoshka Dolls. You can partake in a workshop to learn how to paint your own nesting dolls or, watch any number of the local artists paint dolls in their style. These, of course, are available for purchase. 

While Mandrogy was not our cup of tea, there was a silver lining to this little settlement – the traditional Russian Banya.

Experience a Russian Banya

The banya is one of those quintessentially Russian experiences.  One of the oldest Russian traditions dating back centuries. A tradition that has not lost its appeal and is still popular today.

Essentially the banya is a steam room or sauna where water is poured over hot rocks to create steam with temperatures often exceeding 93ºC. However, the banya comes with a little more ceremony than your average steam room or sauna.

Specific brooms are used in the banya called veniks . These are usually bunches of birch or oak branches which are dipped into cold water in the sweltering steam room. They are then smacked briskly over the body.

Typically,  there will be a person responsible for this task – a banschik.  As the banya is considered a very social activity, a  banschik  is often not required as friends will usually smack each other with the veniks.

Thankfully our experience included a banschik as we would not have known the sequence of events nor the protocols for polite smacking! So, how does one banya?

• Enter the banya and wait for temperatures to become almost unbearably hot.
• Relax while the banschick  completes a ceremonial beating of everyone’s bodies with the veniks.  It includes intense rustling of the branches either side of your head, which is repeated several times.
• Leave the banya and allow the  banschick  to pour freezing cold water over you.
• Adjourn to the adjacent room for tea and jam.
• Repeat steps 1 & 2.
• Leave the banya house and run to the river to plunge into the icy waters.
• Repeat step 6.

You get the gist! Used as a method of bathing in Russia for centuries, the banya is said to have a myriad of health benefits. There are many communal or public banyas in the cities and towns, and some people still have private banyas in their homes.

The banya is one Russian experience we highly recommend, providing you have the constitution to withstand the intensity of it.

Near the centre of the Lake Onega, the second largest lake in Europe, you will find the wild and isolated island of Kizhi. Kizhi is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed open-air museum.

At only 6 km long and 1 km wide, this tiny island is one of Russia’s most visited. The settlements buildings date back to the 15th century, some of which were moved from various Karelian villages during Soviet times to help preserve them.  

However, the islands most notable and recognisable attractions are the famous wooden onion-domed buildings- the twenty-two domed Transfiguration Church and the nine domed Intercession Church.

Locals will tell you; both churches were constructed without the use of a single nail. The unknown builder is also said to have destroyed his axe on completion of the Transfiguration Church. He is quoted as saying: “ There was not and will not be another to match it”.

Within the smaller Church of the intercession, you may hear the local clergy, a beautiful and moving baritone choir intone the ancient liturgy. The islands ancient settlement gives insight into the harsh realities of life in the Russian heartland. Places where entire settlements were isolated for much of the year throughout long winters. Along the Volga – Baltic waterway you will find the urban settlement of Kuzino approx. 600km north of Moscow.

In addition to some fascinating churches, some abandoned or in various states of repair that are worth exploring, the highlight of this region is the Kirillo – Belozersky Monastery. More like a fortress than a monastery, the magnificent complex sits on Severskoye Lake.

Severskoye Lake is deemed so pure no motorboats are allowed on it. According to urban myth, the waters were blessed, giving them qualities similar to those of the mythical fountain of youth.

From humble beginnings in 1397 when two monks founded the monastery in nothing more than a cave dug by two men. By 1494, now a stone structure, it was the largest church in medieval Russia.

Defended by thick walls and towers it was a refuge for not just monks and peasants, but also a place of pilgrimage for Tsars and so benefited from generous donations and tax breaks. Ivan the Terrible was said to be a regular visitor and big tipper. The financially favourable guest list enabled the monastery to grow in size and importance.

By 1764, Catherine the Great had stripped the monastery of its land and converted the complex into a prison. In 1924 the Bolshevik government shut the complex down and executed or arrested the monks. Interestingly, unlike most monasteries, it was not converted into a concentration camp but rather a museum.

Yaroslavl, the largest city on the Volga, lies just 250 km’s north of Moscow which makes this Golden Ring city a popular weekend getaway.

Perhaps this quaint city of six hundred thousand should be called the city of churches because here you will find an impressive kaleidoscope of onion domes. At the convergence of the mighty Volga and Kotorosl rivers is the historic part of the city, a listed UNESCO World Heritage site.

The city dates back to Prince Yaroslav or Yaroslav the Wise  when he came ashore in around 998, slew the sacred bear worshipped by the local pagan tribes and converted them to Christianity. Hence, the bear on the city’s coat of arms.

While these events may have attributed to the city’s religious fervour – the churches that now adorn the skyline were the work of 17th and 19th century merchants on a quest to outdo each other in a bid to beautify the city.  To this day it remains a magnificent city, one that appears to have remained unscathed by the soviet facelift given to much of Russia. 

Uglich, another of the Golden Ring Cities. A picturesque riverside city filled with inviting parks and brightly coloured church domes. The history of Uglich is steeped in a murder mystery that changed the history of Russia.

Ivan the Terrible was never quite right following the death of his wife Anastasia and so instituted a reign of terror that earned him his name. Although respected for his military victories and management of Russian interests, he was also feared for some terrible deeds.

One such deed was accidentally killing his son and heir with a blow to the head. Due to this faux par on Ivan’s behalf, his crippled son Feodor, who by all reports was not well in mind or body, ascended to power. However, the country was being run by Feodor’s brother in law, Boris Godunov.

Quietly in the wings was Dimitry, Ivan’s younger son who could have succeeded the throne in light of Feodor’s lack of interest in political issues. In 1591, at the age of ten, Dimitry was found dead thanks to a stab wound. It was decided Dimitry slit his own throat with a sword during an epileptic fit.

At the risk of stating the obvious – it was widely assumed the boy was murdered. However, those who dared to accuse Boris Gudunov only did so once. The mystery remains, and so does this beautiful city close to Moscow.

Should You Choose A River Cruise to Travel Russia?

When it comes to visiting a country like Russia, we feel a river cruise is possibly the best way to maximise your experience of this incredible country.  Had we decided to travel independently, there is no way we would have had the vast and varied experiences we were able to on this cruise.

The 5-star hotel service, excellent dining and professional tour organisation far exceeded any of our expectations. We now understand why people often choose river cruises as the best way to experience a country. We have since travelled on a number of river cruises through Eastern Europe and the Danube and still believe it to be a value for money way to travel, especially in Europe.

St Petersburg to Moscow river cruise

Most visitors to Russia usually head for Moscow (see this post for places to visit in Moscow ) or St Petersburg but you can also discover the delights of Russia on a river cruise between the two cities.

River cruising in Russia

It’s almost midnight on a balmy summer’s night in Russia.

The sun is a fiery ball sinking slowly behind the forested shore.

Our ship glides on Lake Ladoga leaving ripples of liquid gold in the lake to match the colour of the sky.

There’s an out-worldly calm in the air as we cruise past fishing boats towards fairytale onion-domed churches, spires, monasteries and colourful villages, towns and cities.

Long after the sun has set, the magic of the night continues to linger in the purple-pink sky.

It’s these images of midnight sunsets on the lakes and rivers that flood my mind months and years after I’ve left Russia.

St Petersburg to Moscow

Our cruise from St Petersburg to Moscow travels along a picturesque section of the Volga-Baltic Waterway, which flows through 1367km of lakes, rivers, reservoirs and canals that connect the Volga River to the Baltic Sea.

After spending a few days discovering the many exciting things to do in St Petersburg , we are looking forward to some tranquil time in the countryside. 

Cruising the waterways allows us to unpack once and have our belongings float with us along the river.

There are several Russian river cruises to choose from.

It takes the hassle out of travelling through Russia where few people speak English and independent travel requires a lot of planning.

Each day there’s a shore excursion in a village, town or city.

A team of attentive young English-speaking men and women accompany us ashore on the buses and walking tours.

When we’re not exploring, there’s a daily programme of cultural and educational activities such as Russian language lessons, Russian history lectures, doll-painting, balalaika-playing, cooking lessons and lot os useful Russian travel tips .

The informative talks about Russian costumes, Russian tea and Russian vodka are well attended.

But the most popular session is the caviar tasting party where red and yellow caviar is served with buckwheat blini (Russian pancakes) and four kinds of Russian vodka.

From St Petersburg, the Neva River flows into Europe’s largest freshwater lake, Lake Ladoga, then into the Svir River.

After three days of grand palaces, golden-domed churches and museums in St Petersburg’s, day five allows us to relax on the water as we cruise past colourful timber houses and jewel-box churches.

At Svirstroy, we wander among villagers dressed in colourful Russian costumes selling toys, lace, hand-carved timber eggs, dolls, lacquer bowls and crochet tops.

Kizhi Island

Day six brings us to Kizhi Island, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site of timber buildings and home to the oldest wooden church in Russia, the 14th-century Church of the Resurrection of Lazarus.

Our walking tour takes us in an out of chapels, belfries, log houses, mills, bathhouses, barns and the jaw-dropping 18th-century Church of the Transfiguration with its 22 silvery onion-domed cupolas that glitter in the sun.

Those with a technical bent will enjoy the Volga Baltic canal, which is a series of locks that rise 80m (about the height of a 30-storey building) from the Lake Onega to the Kovzha River.

The river flows into Lake Beloye and Sheksna River where we dock at Goritsy and tour the nearby Kirillo-Belozersky monastery.

The monastery is a massive complex of 15th to 17th-century churches surrounded by fortress walls on the shore of Lake Siverskoye.

Inside are some of the most intricate and beautiful Christian icons I’ve seen while just outside, along the shores of the lake, are locals in skimpy clothes lying in the sun.

My favourite place is Yaroslavl, a city about the size of Newcastle in NSW.

Yaroslavl is one of Russia’s oldest cities, tracing its roots back to the Vikings, and bursting with beautiful onion-domed churches that have intriguing names like Church of St Nicholas the Miracle Worker and Church of Elijah the Prophet.

We visit the Yaroslavl Museum of Russian Art, which now occupies the former governor’s residence.

Museum guides dressed in beautiful silk ball gowns lead us through the grandly furnished rooms.

At the end of the tour, we gather in the ballroom and sip sparkling wine and listen to chamber music while some of the guests dance with the guides.

Our final stop before Moscow is Uglich, a small town with a bloody history.

You wouldn’t think so looking at the picture-book Church of Prince Dmitry on the Blood with its blue domes dotted with stars.

Our guides regale us with tales of treason and murder. This is where Ivan the Terrible’s nine-year-old son Dmitry had his throat cut.

The highlight of our visit to Uglich is having breakfast with a local family. We eat millet porridge, blini and home-made jam.

Some of us get a taste for life with poor families in the countryside while others visit Soviet-era apartments in town.

Many of the hosts speak little or no English.

Then we cruise on to Moscow, where there are many more wonderful treasures to discover.

As we have been reporting today, there were three "direct hits" at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station in southern Ukraine after an apparent drone attack, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has said.

The first of these images is said to show damage on the top of reactor six. 

It is a still taken from a video provided by the Press Service of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

Russia has been in control of the plant since the early days of its invasion of Ukraine.

The second image, below, is said to show the remains of a Ukrainian drone that was shot down over the power station.

Ukraine has denied any involvement. 

Whoever is to blame, Rafael Grossi, head of the IAEA, has described the development as a "major escalation of the nuclear safety and security dangers" facing the plant.

More from Zaporizhzhia, and at least six people have been injured in a Russian missile attack on an industrial facility in the southern Ukrainian city, local authorities said.

Regional governor Ivan Fedorov did not say what sort of facility it was in a message on Telegram.

On Friday, an unidentified industrial facility there was struck in another Russian missile strike, killing four people.

Residential buildings were damaged too.

It is unclear whether Monday's strike was against the same site.

A Ukrainian drone fell on to the roof of a nuclear reactor at the Zaporizhzhia power station in southern Ukraine, Russia has claimed.

"Today, a kamikaze drone was shot down over the plant," the Russian-controlled plant said.

"It fell on the roof of unit six," it added, below a picture of reactor six, which it said had been shut down.

Russian forces took control of the plant in 2022 shortly after their invasion of Ukraine.

Ukraine has denied any involvement in a drone attack.

Earlier, Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said there had been three "direct hits" on the plant.

One casualty was reported and "damage at unit six has not compromised nuclear safety", the IAEA said.

Mr Grossi said: "This is a major escalation of the nuclear safety and security dangers facing the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. 

"Such reckless attacks significantly increase the risk of a major nuclear accident and must cease immediately. 

"Attacking a nuclear power plant is an absolute no go."

US Treasury secretary Janet Yellen says she had "difficult conversations" about Ukraine on a four-day visit to China.

America is concerned that Chinese companies are supporting Russia in its military invasion of its neighbour.

Ms Yellen warned that any banks which facilitate the sale of military or dual-use goods to Russia could face US sanctions. 

"I stressed that companies, including those in the PRC [People's Republic of China], must not provide material support for Russia's war and that they will face significant consequences if they do," she said.

Asked about her warning, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said the US should "not smear or attack the normal state-to-state relations between China and Russia and should not harm the legitimate rights and interests of China and Chinese enterprises". 

Ms Yellen, who formerly chaired the US Federal Reserve, met the governor of China's central bank, Pan Gongsheng, on Monday. 

Ukraine must "win this war" and if it loses, "we all lose", the foreign secretary and his French counterpart have warned.

Lord Cameron and Stephane Sejourne also said: "The costs of failing to support Ukraine now will be far greater than the costs of repelling Putin."

Writing a joint article in The Daily Telegraph, they said: "We must do more to ensure we defeat Russia. 

"The world is watching - and will judge us if we fail."

They added: "Britain and France are proud of the support we have provided to Ukraine, from unprecedented sanctions to co-ordinated deliveries of the first long-range missile systems, Scalp and Storm Shadow. 

"Just last month, the first Ukrainian pilots graduated from training with the Royal Air Force to start training with the Armée de l'air et de l'espace, as part of a programme to build up Ukraine's ability to fly modern F-16 fighter jets."

They went on: "Together, France and Britain will reaffirm our unwavering support for Ukraine at the European Political Community Summit, to be held at Blenheim Palace in July.  

"We will also ensure a productive Nato summit in Washington this summer."

Lord Cameron is visiting Washington this week, where he is expected to urge US politicians to approve a new package of aid for Ukraine.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said a planned German military presence in Lithuania would escalate tensions.

Lithuania, a member of the EU, borders Russia and its ally Belarus.

NATO has said it will partly finance the permanent hosting of 5,000 German troops in Lithuania from 2027. 

Donald Trump will press Ukraine to give up territory if he is re-elected as US president, according to a US media report.

His proposal is that Ukraine should cede Crimea and the Donbas border region to Russia, the Washington Post said.

The paper cited "people who discussed it with Trump or his advisers and spoke on condition of anonymity".

But the policy would "reward Vladimir Putin" and "condone the violation of internationally recognised borders by force", foreign policy experts have warned, the newspaper added.

Mr Trump has "frequently boasted" that he could "negotiate a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine within 24 hours if elected, even before taking office".

It would be a major change to the policy pursued by President Biden, who has provided Ukraine with military aid.

According to the Post, some of the former president's supporters have been trying to talk him out of the plan, given its potential geopolitical ramifications.

Senator Lindsey Graham said: "The way you end this war to me is you make sure Ukraine gets into NATO and the EU. [Trump] doesn't say much about that. I don't know if he's thought too much about it."

Fiona Hill, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution who was Trump's top Russia adviser and has since emerged as a prominent critic, told the Post that Mr Trump's team was "thinking about this very much in silos, that this is just a Ukraine-Russia thing.

"They think of it as a territorial dispute, rather than one about the whole future of European security and the world order by extension," she added.

A further, major US package for Ukraine has been held up in the House of Representatives for weeks.

Infighting among Republicans who control the House, and a threat to oust Speaker Mike Johnson, could cause further delays, Reuters has reported. 

Hardline Republicans are demanding border security provisions and spending cuts to offset aid to US allies.

Ukraine's foreign minister has said he and his UK counterpart have "coordinated next steps" in an attempt to get more air defence systems into Ukraine.

Dmytro Kuleba said they should be "first and foremost Patriots".

The Patriot is a surface-to-air defence system manufactured in the United States and used by the US Army and other allies.

It is considered to be one of the most advanced systems in the US arsenal.

Mr Kuleba said he had spoken to Lord Cameron following discussions at NATO HQ last week.

"We coordinated next steps to find and deliver additional air defence systems, first and foremost Patriots, to Ukraine," he said on X.

"I appreciate David's proactive approach aimed at getting things done."

People in a city in northwestern Ukraine are being urged to stay indoors after a Russian attack apparently resulted in air pollution.

Zvyahel City Council said infrastructure had been hit.

"Russia struck an infrastructure object of the community overnight," the council said on Telegram. 

"There are no casualties among the civilian population. 

"Currently, there is a direct threat of air pollution, so it is recommended to stay indoors with closed windows." 

Russia launched more than two dozen attack drones, officials said on Monday, hitting critical infrastructure in the central Zhytomyr region and damaging logistics facilities in the south.
