Tips For A Safe Safari In Germany

  • Casual comfortable clothing, sunglasses, sunscreen and hats are a must if you plan to do the various outdoor safaris in Germany during the summer season.
  • For the wildlife safaris like the Serengeti safari in Germany, it is good to carry a daypack to keep the kids hydrated and nourished during the safari walks and other sessions. Even though most good parks have restaurants or refreshment kiosks, carrying your own stock always comes in handy. Pay close attention to the instructors as you indulge in adventure activities including balloon safari and ATV/quad biking, etc.
  • Carry a stole or light jacket for evening safaris as the air gets nippy after sun down.
  • Choose the time of your safari wisely to ensure you have a pleasant experience. Animal viewings and feedings at most parks are good during morning hours, while balloon safaris offer best visibility and between January-March so warm clothes are a must.

Wild Things – Safari in Germany

It’s not only in exotic, distant countries that you can go on safari. Exciting encounters with animals are also to be had right on your doorstep. Fancy a safari in Germany? We’ve tracked down a few extraordinary, wild species in the game parks of Germany.

Moose on the Loose! Hochwildpark Rheinland Wildlife Park

Well, have we landed in Sweden? In the Hochwildpark Rhineland wildlife park , moose stalk through the forest. Sometimes, however, you have to be patient and gently seek them out until the wild animals show themselves in their extensive enclosure. But visitors can easily pass the time until they get a glimpse of the four-legged locals by feeding wild boar and deer, checking out the adventure playground or going on a photo safari for kids with animal keeper, Claude. On safari in Germany there’s a lot to see! A full-day family ticket (2 adults, 2 children) costs € 28, children up to 3 years free.

Too Much Monkey Business: Monkey and Bird Park Eckenhagen

An encounter with monkeys is not for the faint of heart. Whether in Morocco or on the Rock of Gibraltar, where Berber monkeys are normally at home. Or in the Amazon region, where squirrel monkeys live in the wild. In the monkey and bird park in Eckenhagen , visitors can meet these two species up close in their enclosure. Just be careful when feeding them; the monkeys can be pretty cheeky when it comes to getting what they want. The park’s birds, on the other hand, are far more relaxed. Admire the storks and flamingos, and imagine yourself in the wetlands of South America, rather than on safari in North-Rhine Westphalia! Adult tickets cost € 14.70, children under 14 years pay € 12.70.

Bear with Us: Nature and Environmental Park Güstrow

Fred and Frodo pretty much disappear between November and February. That’s when the bear brothers hibernate. For the rest of the year, however, visitors can observe these wild animals swimming in their forest lake or playing together in their enclosure. In the Güstrow Nature and Environment Park in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania there’s lots to experience – and not only in the two-hectare bear enclosure. Visitors can also observe wolves or owls and many other native animals in a wild environment. The park also offers an opportunity to simply enjoy nature on adventurous trails over climbing paths and bridges, through caves and moors. Or why not book a “Twilight Wolf Hike”? This guided tour through the home territory of the wolf also includes a feeding session. A fantastic experience for the whole family. Day ticket adults € 13, children € 8, guided tour from € 12. www.wildpark-mv.de

Lair of the Lynx: Nationalpark Harz

Shh, everybody keep quiet! Can you hear that rustling? Hearing like a lynx is an advantage in the Harz National Park. For a few years now, these shy cats of prey have been living wild in the park’s forests.

For a few years now, lynx have been living wild in the Harz national park

And there’s a very good chance of meet them at the lynx show enclosure at Rabenklippe near Bad Harzburg. Four lynxes live here in 10,000m² area of woodland and can be observed by visitors from a viewing platform. Every Wednesday and Saturday the lynxes are fed by the rangers; a great opportunity to experience these elegant wild animals and to learn a lot of interesting facts about them from the rangers. A safari in Germany with goose-bumps guaranteed! No entrance fee.

Ice Age Safari in Germany: Neanderthal Valley

In the Neanderthal Valley , it’s the ice age in the game reserve. Animals from the past such as aurochs, bison and tarpan are on show for visitors here. Aurochs and tarpan (a species of European wild horse) have been considered extinct in Europe for hundreds of years, but “copies” of the primeval species have been bred at the Ice Age game reserve since 1935. Today’s domestic cattle and horses carry the genetic material of their extinct ancestors, so that by crossing original breeds, even oxen and tarpan can be bred which are very similar to their ancestors.

reconstruction of the Neanderthal girl Kina

But the Neanderthal Valley is worth a trip for plenty of other reasons. The Neanderthal Museum introduces visitors to the original inhabitants of the Neanderthal Valley. It’s even possible to visit the location where remains of the region’s original inhabitants have been found. And the “Stone Age” playground is the perfect place to let young and older kids have a good run around. Entrance fee: € 11 for adults. Children (6-16 years) pay € 6.50.

The best zoos and animal parks in Germany

The best zoos and animal parks in Germany

Whether you're an expat, a tourist, or a local, there are plenty of sights and attractions to visit and enjoy in Germany, with its myriad of  monuments and amusement parks  all over the country. In fact, there are so many things to do that you're not likely going to find yourself struggling to find an idea for your next day out!

Well, if you’ve visited one too many German castles  this year, and don’t fancy a spa day or a trip to one of Germany’s sprawling national parks , why not consider a trip to the zoo? Germany has a great many zoos and animal parks, each with its own unique feel and attractions. From butterfly houses, to open safaris and spectacular aquatic displays, German zoos offer a fun, immersive and educational day out for the whole family - no matter what the weather is like!

Five zoos you have to visit in Germany

Zoos and animal parks in Germany don’t just allow you to see some of the world’s most exotic animals in elaborate, specially-designed enclosures, they are centres of education and often at the forefront of worldwide conservation efforts. The following five zoos are among the best in Germany, housing an eclectic mix of animals and specialised attractions that allow you to learn about the world’s most intriguing critters in-depth and up close.

Zoologischer Garten Berlin

Starting with Germany’s oldest, and perhaps most famous, zoo, the Berlin Zoological Garden is one of the most popular zoos in the world. It was founded almost 200 years ago in 1844 and now attracts around 4 million visitors a year. The zoo boasts around 1.200 species of animals, from elephants, to meercats, to lizards, to the zoo’s oldest inhabitant; a 74-year-old flamingo named Ingo. It is also the only place in Germany you can spot the rare giant panda!

The Zoological Garden in Berlin is the number one stop in Germany for animal lovers. With giant, immersive enclosures and a wide variety of animals, this is the closest you’ll get to seeing your favourite animals in their natural habitat. On the zoo grounds, you will find an aquarium, which houses all your favourite creepy crawlies, reptiles, and, of course, fish. You can also find the “World of Birds” at the zoo, where you can marvel and some of the most exotic, even fantastical, winged creatures. The zoo has become a fan favourite for its public feedings and animal shows.

The zoo is also at the forefront of worldwide conservation and breeding projects, working with a number of universities , zoos and research institutes from all over the world. It is also involved in European breeding programmes, helping to protect endangered species and reintroduce them to the wild.

Leipzig Zoological Garden

The Leipzig Zoological Garden in Saxony is another of Germany’s most popular zoos. Ernst Pinkert opened the zoo in 1878, converting it from the restaurant he owned. Since then, the zoo has grown to house more than 850 species of animals. The zoo is unique for its special “Theme Worlds”, such as the tropical Gondwanaland and primate-themed Pongoland, which are part of its “Zoo of the Future” plan. The plan will see the zoo transform into six special enclosures, designed to closely replicate the animals’ natural habitats. It has previously been ranked as the best zoo in Germany, and the second best in Europe.

Leipzig Zoo is contributing to conservation efforts across the globe, working closely with animal sanctuaries in Asia and Africa. The zoo also takes part in specialised global breeding programmes and helped reintroduce animals that had previously gone extinct in the wild, like the Mongolian wild horse and the scimitar oryx, back into the wild.

The zoo is also perfect for a day out with the kids, as it offers numerous opportunities for interacting with the animals through attractions like the jungle river boat trip and the petting village.

Wilhelma Zoologisch-Botanischer Garten

The Wilhelma Zoologisch-Botanischer Garten in Stuttgart is one of the most unique animal parks in Germany, and one of the biggest in Baden-Württemberg . Originally designed as a bathhouse for Duke William I of Württemberg in 1837, it is the only combined zoological and botanical garden in Europe. It was reopened as a botanical garden in 1919, following the abdication of the last king of Württemberg in 1918. At this time, the garden was famous for its orchid collection.

It was reopened in 1949 with an attached aquarium after being devastated in the Second World War and since then hosted a number of exhibits, such as the "Animals of the German Fairy Tale" and the “Indian Jungle Exhibit” in the 1950s, which boosted its popularity. Since 1950, the garden has acquired a number of new buildings and exhibits, including an aquarium, an aviary, elephant and rhino houses and an outdoor terrarium, where butterflies glide around you.

The rich history of the park has contributed to its truly unique and stunning visage. The garden looks more like sprawling country grounds than a zoo, complete with beautifully designed buildings and enclosures, as well as intricate gardens and spectacular flower displays. The Wilhelma Zoologisch-Botanischer Garten is a place you can appreciate nature in all its glory.

Hellabrunn Zoo

Founded in 1911, Hellabrunn Zoo in Munich , Bavaria , is actually the world’s first Geo-zoo; a zoo in which animals are housed according to their geographical location. The enclosures are designed to closely replicate the animals' natural habitats, allowing them to form close, complex communities, much like they would in the wild. The park is specifically designed so it more resembles a nature reserve than a zoo and offers visitors the chance to view animals much like one would on a safari.

The park puts on a number of animal shows throughout the day, including the ever-popular sea lion training show and the birds of prey training show. Visitors also get the chance to watch feeding sessions, which gives zookeepers the opportunity to educate visitors with fun facts and intriguing information on some of the world’s most reclusive and secretive animals.

The zoo also takes an active role in education and conservation. In 2018, Mühlendorf Village opened to the public. The Bavarian-style village is part of the European section of the zoo, focusing on regional biodiversity and educating visitors on local wildlife. In July 2019, the Zoo School opened at the Mühlendorf Village. The school teaches children more about biodiversity through interactive lessons and even follows a special education programme with topics such as “Fascinating Facts about Wild and Honey Bees”.

Duisburg Zoo

Rounding off our picks for the best zoos and animal gardens in Germany is Duisburg Zoo. Located in Duisburg, North Rhine-Westphalia , the zoo is well-known for its dolphinarium, which is one of the biggest in Germany, and for its focus on Australian animals. The zoo has the most species of kangaroos in all of Germany and keeps wallabies, wombats, Tasmanian devils and emus. However, the zoo is most famous for its koalas, having bred 30 babies in the last 25 years.

As already mentioned, one of the zoo's most well-known exhibits is the dolphinarium. The dolphinarium is home to eight bottlenose dolphins that dazzle spectators in public training sessions that help to educate the public on the dangers their kind face in the wild. Despite the zookeepers’ mission to educate the public on these beautiful creatures and the challenges they face in the wild, particularly from humans, the dolphinarium has courted some controversy from animal rights activists.

The zoo also features a number of other areas that are designed to mimic the animals' natural habitats such as the tropical Rio Negro, an Amazonian-style enclosure that is home to an abundance of wildlife. The zoo makes frequent use of underwater viewing platforms, that allow you to see aquatic wildlife close up in the Rio Negro exhibit, as well as in the dolphinarium and the adjoining aquarium.

Time to enjoy the sun!

So, the next time you’re not sure what to do on a sunny day, why not take yourself and the family down to one of Germany’s beautiful animal parks? Whether you prefer beautiful, sprawling gardens, a jungle safari or a deep sea adventure, there really is something for everyone.

You can also learn about each zoo's conservation efforts, and how they are directly impacting animal populations in the wild and, in some cases, reintroducing previously extinct animals back into the wild. On top of this, most animal parks have a plethora of learning facilities for both children and adults, making going to the zoo a fun, educational day out - perfect for the school holidays !

Wildlife parks — safari in Germany

You don't have to go to Africa in order to watch wild animals, oh no. In Germany, you can go exploring just as well and you will save the plane ticket, too. While you probably won't see lions or elephants over here, you'll find just as many different species in Germany's wild parks. While shy snow leopards carefully make their way through the bushes, small brown bear babies dabble happily in the water and red harts roar in the rutting season. If you have a little bit of food for them, sometimes the very trustful deers will come to eat it from your hand. There's one other thing you should bring along: patience. In nature, there's no regular schedule, which is why you have to be watchful at all times. But isn't this the beautiful thing about it? You'll be surprised how much you can discover in our handpicked collection of Germany's best wild parks. Go on a safari – in the middle of Germany.

Wildpark Poing

Hiking Highlight

Great destination! The animals here are so friendly that a deer even ate out of my hand. Many animals run around freely, just looking for people's attention - or their food. So take a pack of dry bread with you and look at fallow deer up close. A special highlight of our visit was the bird show. My insider tip: The animals are most friendly on weekday mornings! All information at wildpark-poing.de .

Tier-Freigelände im Nationalparkzentrum Lusen

The Bavarian Forest National Park in the Inner Bavarian Forest lies on the border with the Czech Republic. It was founded in 1970 as Germany's first national park in the Freyung - Grafenau district and has an area of around 24,250 hectares. Domestic mixed mountain forests, firs, beeches and spruces are protected. Many rare animal species were also reintroduced, such as the lynx, European wildcat, red deer, and the wolf, also the capercaillie, as well as the owl and Kautz. The open game enclosure is beautifully laid out in size, and is very interesting to visit, it is free of charge, and you should plan a day.

Wildpark Lüneburger Heide

Beautiful! In beautiful, clean enclosures you will learn a lot about the animals and their habitat. Throughout the park, the attention to detail. Especially the very attractively designed bird of prey show is a highlight here. Otherwise we have spotted wolves, bears, prairie dogs, otters, snow leopards, tigers, raccoons and moose. There is also a petting zoo, where lively goats wrestle for every fingering hand of the visitors ... Opening hours: * March 1 to October 31 - 8:00 am to 7:00 pm * 1st November to 28th February - 9:30 am to 4:30 pm * Special opening hours: 24.12. and 31.12. - 9.30am to 3pm Entry: Adults: 11,00 € Children: 9,00 € Dog: 1,00 € wild-park.de

Tip by Andreas Platzl

Wildpark im Grafenberger Wald

Open all year, free and guaranteed a lot of fun. You can visit red deer, deer, mouflon and wild boar at home. A special feature is the fallow deer outdoor enclosure, where the game can be experienced and fed close up.

Natur- und Umweltpark Güstrow

In August I visited the nature and environmental park with my parents. Despite the discount, this adventure park is certainly one of the expensive ones. Nevertheless, you also get a lot on offer. Puzzles to participate in, active learning games and well-explained information boards are lovingly provided. The whole thing has a museum-educational effect and allows some of the rusty knowledge from school to be refreshed. The snack stand next to the playground invites you to grab a little refreshment. Would love to come here again at any time. Prices: Adult: €16.00 Reduced adult: €15.00 (pupil, student, senior, disabled) Child: €8.00 (from 3 to 16 years) Family day ticket: €45.00 (2 adults + up to 3 children) each additional child: €6.00 Dog: €6.00 Opening hours: Open all year round from 9:00 a.m.; also on Sundays and public holidays. March: 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m April - October: 9:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m November - February: 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m

Landpark Lauenbrück

In the Landpark Lauenbrück, surrounded by a very idyllic landscape, you can see various animal species from close up. Especially in the outdoor enclosure the deer and deer do not seem to be afraid. If the animals have already become enough, they can also spend their time in the tasty restaurant, on one of the children's playgrounds or on the adventure path directly on the lake. During my 5-hour stay I especially noticed the cleanliness of the park and the scrupulousness of the animals. Overall, a very nice facility! Opening hours: All year round also on public holidays. Spring to Fall (March - September): 8am to 6pm Autumn - Spring (October - March): 8am to 5pm

Wildpark Bad Mergentheim

Bike Touring Highlight

My absolute favorite game park. Highlights here are the wolves and brown bears, some of which look very photogenic into the camera. Especially recommended are the feeding rounds. Here you can really see all the animals up close. The feeding tour lasts about 2.5 hours and takes place twice a day. In the winter time there is even a Christmas market. Opening hours: From 7 November 2016 until 17 March 2017 only open on all Saturdays / Sundays and public holidays from 10:30 am until dusk, last admission: 4:00 pm wildtierpark.de

Wildpark Schorfheide

The Wildpark Schorfheide is completely located in the Schorfheide-Chorin Nature Park. Here you can discover native wild animals and old domestic breeds. The wildlife park is open every day from 9am to 7pm throughout the year. Last admission is on weekdays at 17 o'clock and at the weekend at 18 o'clock. Adults pay 7 euros and children 4.50 euros admission.

Wildpark & Waldbad Dünnwald

If you spend most of your time in the center of Cologne, you will hardly notice that Cologne has 15 percent forest area. You can easily reach the thin forest in the east of the city via the wildlife park of the same name, past well-known forest animals to the forest pool. Further south you reach the idyllic Höhenfelder See over a hill. More info: wildpark-duennwald.de waldbad-camping.de

Wildpark Bilsteintal in Warstein

The wildlife park invites you to take a walk at any time of the year or day. Numerous hiking trails lead to the wildlife park. Here you can find red deer, sika deer, raccoons, lynx, wild boar and foxes. Admission is free. In the wildlife park there is a stalactite cave that can be visited during a guided tour. There is an inn attached to the wildlife park.

Wildpark Heigenbrücken

Hiking Highlight ( Segment )

In the enclosures wild boars, fallow deer and red deer can be observed up close. At a vending machine you can buy special animal feed for feeding.

Wildpark Pforzheim

The Wildpark Pforzheim is beautifully situated in the middle of the forest. Admission is compensated by redeeming a parking ticket, which costs only 3 euros. You can see: goats, otters, fallow deer, "farm animals", bison, wild boar, foxes, lynx, ... The animals have relatively large retreats and are at first glance healthy and well maintained. For little money you get a lot here.

Wildpark Leipzig

Mountain Biking Highlight

One of the most attractive recreational areas in Leipzig is the Wildpark Leipzig in the southern floodplain forest. On the approx. 46 ha large area about 25 animal species with approx. 250 animals are kept. As a result, the wildlife park Connewitz complements the animal species composition with other livestock facilities in the city of Leipzig such as the Zoo Leipzig, which shows superficially exotic animals, or the pet zoo of the company Bauersfeld, where visitors can see different domestic breeds. The game park understands itself (also) as a "PR agency" for native animals and nature. It is his goal to promote species and habitat protection. The wildlife park is also an information center for the local wildlife, offers the opportunity to conduct research and is of course an attractive recreational space for visitors.

Wildpark Alte Fasanerie

The Fasanerie is in summer as well as in winter a great destination! Ample free parking, moderate prices, friendly staff and pleasant atmosphere. There is something for both the little ones and the adults to see and experience. Not only the animals were able to inspire us, also the small play area invites to a break. The website displays an annual calendar of the animals showing the highlights of each month. From the offspring of foxes to the mouflon rutting. Ticket prices: Adults 7 € Pupils, students, trainees: 4 € Seniors from 65: 5 € Children and adolescents (3-14 years): 3,50 € Opening hours: Summer months (March 1 to October 31) Cash register: 9:00 am - 6:00 pm The park closes at 19:00 Winter months (1st November to 28th February) Cash register: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm Sat, Sun + public holidays: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm The park closes at 17:30

Hochwildpark Rheinland

Pure nature to walk and relax. Here you can observe mainly domestic game in a large enclosure. My tip: Take your time, as it is often helpful to sit down and just wait. Quiet, like a hunter on the high stand, we have thus made the best observations. Opening hours: March to October: open daily from 9am to 6pm November to February: Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday and public holidays open from 10.00-17.00 Prices: Adults: € 6.00 Reduced: 5,00 € Children from 3 years: 4.00 €
