With 3D Touch, you could press down on an image hosted on a Web page, and “pop” open the image’s URL in a separate tab (or maybe you did it by pressing and “swiping it up,” I don’t remember the exact motion). Now that 3D Touch has been disabled, how do you do that? A long-press on an image brings up the options “Share,” “Add to Photos,” and “Copy” — but none of those are what I’m trying to do. Thx

I get: "Share" "Add to Photos" "Copy" I guess you save it in Photos and use it there. I do remember then pop (or was it peek?) action from 3D Touch, but I don't remember using it to open in a new tab.

You can still get the URL by selecting Share... then "copy".

How to use the new tab bar in iOS 15 Safari

iOS 15 introduces big changes to Safari — here's how to perform old, familiar features

How to use the new tab bar in iOS 15 Safari

Safari has been a mainstay of Apple's iPhones since the very beginning, but iOS 15 brings some major changes to the venerable web browser's appearance and functionality. Perhaps the biggest alteration is in the tab bar, the part of Safari's interface that governs how you interact with all the websites you've opened.

Most crucially, Safari's tab bar on the iPhone is now at the bottom of the screen by default, instead of the top. That takes some getting used to, not to mention an adjustment of muscle memory — assuming that you don't just go and make Safari's tab bar return to the top of the screen .

The location of the tab bar may have changed, but other functions in Safari remain the same, even if they might look a little out of place if you keep that tab bar at the bottom of the screen. iOS 15 beta testers may also be confused, as Apple made several tweaks to the look of Safari in response to feedback from users.

To help you navigate around the redesigned Safari browser on your iPhone, here's a guide on how to use the tab bar in Safari on iOS 15, along with a reminder on how to handle some basic interactions.

How to open a new browser tab in iOS 15 Safari

1. Tap the tabs button in the bottom right corner of Safari.

How to reload a website

If you tested an early beta of iOS 15, reloading a website was unnecessarily complicated, forcing you tap a More button in the tab bar; only then could you access the reload button. But later on during the beta process, the reload button was added to the tab bar — just tap it when you want to reload a page.

How to open Safari links in new tabs on iPhone, iPad, and Mac

Everyone browses the web differently. And whether you’re working, researching, or just bumming around the internet, you want control over the links you open.

In Safari , you have various ways to open links on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac. One of the easiest ways to open a link is in a new tab. This lets you keep your current page open but still have a look at the link you click or tap.

Here, we’ll show you a few ways to open a link in a new tab in Safari. From opening it in the background or moving right to it, to shortcuts and settings, you decide how to open your links .

On iphone and ipad.

At times, when you tap a link from a webpage in Safari on iOS, it’ll open in a new tab. But many websites don’t want you to navigate away. So if you visit a site and tap to read an article, for example, it’ll open in the same tab. Here’s how to change this.

Instead of tapping a link on a webpage, press and hold the link . This will display the shortcut menu. From there, tap Open in New Tab .

When you do this, the link opens in a new tab and you switch to that new tab automatically . But you can change this too. You can still open the link in a new tab but do so in the background.

1) Open iPhone Settings and select Safari .

2) Under Tabs, pick Open Links .

3) Choose In Background .

Now, when you press and hold a link to display the shortcut menu, tap Open in Background . This will open the link in a new tab but won’t switch you over to it immediately . This way, you can continue viewing the site you’re on and pop over to that tab when you’re ready.

You have different options in Safari on Mac than you do on iOS. You can control links by opening them in new tabs instead of new windows automatically and use a shortcut to immediately open links in new tabs.

Open Safari and click Safari > Preferences from the menu bar. Select Tabs at the top. Then configure these options.

Open pages in tabs instead of windows : Select either Automatically or Always from the drop-down. The difference between these is that Automatically will open the link in a new tab unless that link is designed for a specific format. Always will open it in a new tab regardless.

Command-click opens a link in a new tab : If you check this box, you can hold your Command key, click the link, and the page will open in a new tab.

When a new tab or window opens make it active : Check this box only if you want to immediately switch to the new tab when it opens. If you prefer to leave it open in the background, don’t check the box.

Along with the above adjustments, you can always open a link in a new tab with a right-click. Right-click the link and select Open Link in New Tab .

This is how you can take control of the links you open in Safari. Open them in new tabs, switch right to them or open them in the background and use shortcuts. It’s all in your hands!

How to customize the safari start page on iphone and ipad.

Make your Start Page clean and simple---or just as cluttered as you like it.

On your iPhone or iPad, you can easily customize the Safari Start Page in iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 (or higher). You can make the page blank (mostly), add a background image, or pick and choose what you want to see. Here's how.

First, open Safari on your iPhone or iPad and open a new tab by tapping the tabs button (two overlapping rectangles), then tapping the plus ("+") button.

You'll see Safari's "Start Page" by default. To edit what's on the Start Page, scroll down if necessary and tap the "Edit" button.

When you tap "Edit," a "Customize Start Page" window will appear. Use the switches beside the listed options to turn them on or off. Here's what each option does.

  • Favorites: This displays items from your Favorites list (like bookmarks).
  • Frequently Visited: You'll see a list of frequently visited websites.
  • Shared With You: This gives you a list of items shared with you from other people through the Messages app.
  • Privacy Report: This shows a report on the number of trackers Safari has blocked recently.
  • Siri Suggestions: This displays suggestions from Siri related to what's in your history and bookmarks.
  • Reading List: This shows items from your Reading List .
  • iCloud Tabs: This shows Safari tabs that are synchronized across iCloud from your other devices.

While also in the "Customize Start Page" window, you can use the "three lines" handle beside each item to tap and drag the Start Page items in the list. This will change the order of how the items will appear on the Start Page.

And if you turn the switch beside "Background Image" into the "on" position, you can select a background picture that will display behind the content on your Start Page. Tap an image in the thumbnails or tap the plus ("+") button to select a custom image from your photo library.

If you want to make your Start Page as minimalist as possible, switch off every item on the "Customize Start Page" list. (Unfortunately, you'll still see the "Edit" button.)

When you're done, click the "X" button to close the Customize Start Page window. The changes you've made take effect immediately. Happy browsing!

There are some pretty significant changes to Safari in iPadOS 15, and you can further customize your experience with a few hidden-away settings relating to the Tab Bar. Here's how you can change iPadOS 15 tab behavior.

How to switch to a Compact Tab Bar in Safari for iPadOS 15

You have a couple of options when it comes to your Tab Bar's appearance in iPadOS 15 : Separate or Compact.

Separate takes up more space but offers a more familiar-looking appearance with the address bar displayed above your open tabs.

Compact takes up less space by having your currently viewed tab act as an address bar, meaning you can get more content on screen. Compact also matches the Tab Bar's color to the site you are viewing, effectively extending the page to the edge of your iPad's screen.

  • Open your Settings app.
  • In the sidebar, scroll down and tap Safari .

How to Open a New Tab on Safari

It's free and super easy to set up

Safari is a popular web browser used by many Apple device users worldwide. When browsing on the internet, it is common to open multiple web pages at once. This is where tabs come in handy. Tabs allow you to browse multiple web pages in a single window. In this article, we will show you how to open a new tab on Safari for desktop and iPhone/iPad, as well as managing your tabs for a more organized and efficient browsing experience.

Understanding Safari Tabs

Safari tabs are similar to file folders in an office. Just as file folders help organize documents, tabs help organize websites. When you open a new tab, it creates a new browser window that allows you to browse another website or search result. Safari tabs are located at the top of the browser window, directly below the address bar. Each tab displays the title of the webpage it contains, making it easy for you to identify and switch between tabs.

What are Safari Tabs?

Simply put, a Safari tab is a way to have multiple web pages open in a single window. This means that you can move between pages quickly and easily without having to open and close separate windows or web browsers. Tabs are found at the top of the Safari window, and each tab displays the title of the webpage you are currently viewing.

Benefits of Using Multiple Tabs

The use of multiple tabs in Safari has several benefits. With tabs, you can manage your browsing sessions more efficiently and stay organized. This allows you to switch between different web pages easily and quickly without losing your place. Additionally, it saves valuable screen space as you don't have to open separate browser windows for each web page you want to visit.

Another benefit of using multiple tabs is that it can help you to be more productive. For example, if you are researching a topic and need to refer to multiple sources, you can open each source in a separate tab. This allows you to easily switch between sources without losing your place or having to navigate back and forth between different windows or applications.

Using multiple tabs can also help you to stay focused. If you tend to get distracted easily while browsing the internet, opening multiple tabs can help you to stay on task. By keeping all of your relevant tabs open in one window, you can avoid the temptation to open other windows or applications that may distract you from your work.

Finally, using multiple tabs can help you to save time. Instead of having to open and close different windows or applications, you can simply switch between tabs to access the information you need. This can be especially helpful if you are working on a project with a tight deadline or need to quickly find information for a presentation or report.

Opening a New Tab on Safari for Desktop

Opening a new tab on Safari for desktop is an easy task. There are three ways to open a new tab in Safari for desktop:

Using the File Menu

First, you can open a new tab by selecting "File" from the menu, then clicking on "New Tab." Alternatively, you can use a keyboard shortcut by pressing Command + T. Once you select either of these options, a new tab will open.

Clicking the Plus Icon

Second, you can click the plus icon located on the top right of the Safari window. The plus icon is a symbol that looks like a circle with a plus sign in it. When you click it, a new tab will be created, and you can start browsing a new website.

Keyboard Shortcuts

Finally, you can use a keyboard shortcut by simultaneously pressing Command + T on your keyboard. This will open a new tab instantly, allowing you to switch between web pages efficiently.

Opening a New Tab on Safari for iPhone and iPad

Opening a new tab on Safari for iPhone and iPad is slightly different from opening a new tab on Safari for desktop. Here are two ways to open a new tab on Safari for iPhone and iPad:

Using the Tabs icon

First, tap the tabs icon located at the bottom right corner of the Safari screen. The tabs icon is denoted by a square with several smaller squares on top of it. When you tap it, you will see all the open tabs on your device. At the bottom of the screen, you will see a new tab icon. Tap on it to open a new tab.

Long-pressing the Plus Icon

Alternatively, you can long-press the plus icon located at the bottom of the screen. A menu will appear with options to open a new tab, new private tab, and close all tabs. Tap on "New Tab" to open a new tab on your device.

Opening Links in a New Tab

Additionally, you can also open links in a new tab on Safari for iPhone and iPad. To do this, long-press the link until a menu appears. Tap on "Open in New Tab" to open the link in a new tab without losing the current page you are browsing.

Managing Your Safari Tabs

Once you have multiple tabs open, you need a way of managing them efficiently. Here are a few ways to manage your tabs:

Switching Between Tabs

To switch between tabs, click on the tab you wish to view. You can also use the "Command + Shift + ("left"/"right") arrow keys on your keyboard to navigate between tabs quickly. Additionally, you can use the swipe gesture to navigate right or left on the tabs.

Closing Tabs

To close a tab, click on the "x" on the right side of the tab or use the keyboard shortcut "Command + W."

Reopening Closed Tabs

If you accidentally close a tab, you can reopen it by clicking on "History" in the menu bar, then selecting "Reopen Closed Tab." Alternatively, you can use the keyboard shortcut "Command + Shift + T."

Now you know how to open a new tab on Safari for desktop and iPhone/iPad, as well as managing your tabs efficiently. By following the tips outlined in this article, you can improve your browsing experience, stay organized, and save valuable screen space. With these simple tips, you will be able to manage your Safari tabs like a pro.

Safari on iPad OS 13.4. Where’s Open in New Tab?

I can always use a new tab, copy a link and then paste to the new tab, but what happened here? This is supposed to be a basic operation and now it’s gone.

Let’s be clear, Apple don’t make changes just for change sake. Apple do sometimes introduce new functions and functionality - and these are always documented in the iPad User Guide for iPadOS. If you only want a “simple” browser, there are many alternatives.

Here are links to both the downloadable version of the User Guide - and the online version:

https://help.apple.com/epub/ipad/en/

https://support.apple.com/guide/ipad/welcome/ipados

I believe that much of your frustration is just borne of lacking in some knowledge of the features and operation of the iPad - all of which can be addressed.

So, back to Safari...
The “open in new tab’ option hasn’t gone anywhere - it’s still there, just as it always has been.
The action menu’s are dynamic - the options change to reflect the task and your iPad settings. You are seeing the option to “open in background” because of your current settings.
First, lets try to understand what the two ways to open tabs are - and what they actually do:
  • ”Open in Background” opens a new tab as a background task - your current tab remains active as the foreground task.
  • ”Open in New Tab” opens a new tab as a foreground task - and immediately shifts your focus to the new tab.
The setting that changes this behaviour is here:
Settings > Safari > Open New Tabs in Background - is currently set to ON
... which is why you currently see the “Open in Background” option.
Switch this option to OFF and you will see the “Open in New Tab” option.

Just “tap” the icon to open a new Safari tab.

No. That's still there. However, one of the options for any link was to hold down on it. After a few seconds I'd get a small preview and a list of possible actions would pop up. The first one is "Open". The next one was "Open in New Tab" where it would do that.

Actually I looked at the options again and one is "Open in Background" showing two folders and the one on top with a "+". It looks like the function was renamed.

I stumbled upon this same problem. I have iOS 13.4.1 By playing around with it I discovered a technique that works and it does NOT involve copying the URL and then hitting the + symbol to open an additional tab. See if the following steps work for you. 1) Long press the link on the current web page that you want to open in a new tab until the options pop up... and ALSO.... a small window pops up as a representation of the web page you want to open. 2. Rather than selecting one of the text options, press down & hold on the window that opened up of the web page and drag it to the area where the tabs are located, near the address bar (but NOT to the address bar itself). 3. You'll then see it open as an additional tab. It's kind of cool to see it happen and maybe the cool factor was why Apple added this way of opening it in a new tab, but it demands a little more precision of finger movement than I like. If you drag it too far, rather than opening it in a new tab, it will open yet another instance of Safari and open the link there. Depending on exactly how you drag it, that 2nd instance of Safari might be hidden or might open as a dual screen, with two separate Safari browsers open side by side. In any case, unless you need to see the content of the 2 tabs opened at the same time, this is NOT as convenient as simply having multiple tabs. My guess is that all of this is for 1 of 2 reasons. Either Apple thought this was a cooler looking way of opening it in a new tab and so it replaces the original way of selecting "Open in New Tab" from the list of options, or Apple meant to give us both options but slipped up and forgot to include it in the drop-down list of options. In any case, with a little finger dexterity, you still have the "open in new tab" option, just done differently.

I tried “Open in Background” after a lonG press and also got the link in a new tab. Renaming things I use every day is just.......irritating. Grrrrr. What is the logic behind that? Let’s play with their heads and watch them complain? And why “background”? Background isn’t a new tab or a new window, it’s something hidden. After two years on my iPad, this is the first thing I’d bash. As if losing my sight isn’t enough, you have to fiddle with renaming things and not telling us, and using a word whose meaning is all wrong. Shame on whoever made that decision!

Same problem here. I just installed iOS 13.4.1 last night, and my ability to put links in new Safari tabs is gone -- or was, until I stumbled across this thread & found the explanation.

Apple, PLEASE stop changing stuff just to change it. Changing terminology on us with NO explanation is user-hostile. Every other browser uses "open on new tab"; everyone on the Net has used "open in new tab" for years now. It's extremely frustrating & annoying & aggravating when something that was working just fine an hour earlier starts NOT working because you decided to change the wording & functionality of the menu without any explanation.

that two-finger tap is extremely awkward, especially when the link is at the bottom of the page -- at the bottom edge of the screen -- and can't scroll any farther. My wrists don't bend that way. The link has to be hit exactly right, or it opens in the window I'm currently reading. Ditto with dragging that tiny preview window that pops up -- another annoying "feature" that can go DIAF -- because that little window is extremely resistant to being dragged, especially when it's right over the text I was reading.

For other users who are running into this bit of frustration, y_p_w's solution works: the option "open in background" on the submenu is our old "open in new tab" function.

”Open in Background” • opens a new tab as a background task - your current tab remains active as the foreground task.
”Open in New Tab” • opens a new tab as a foreground task - and immediately shifts your focus to the new tab.

That’s the most helpful explanation, thanks for posting this and it works perfectly!

I wholeheartedly agree!! I doubt there would be any enjoyment if we changed company names, phone numbers, street names, part names, etc. it creates confusion. I’ve been using the same process (long hold and open in new tab) then all of a sudden it’s gone. Come to find out it’s not truly gone but renamed. This change was really dumb. The text previously used was clear to the average person. Background denotes a different idea. Besides what do all other browsers and applications call this feature? Oh that’s right a New Tab.

Idiotic. Thanks for the explanation of how to correct the unwanted and unneeded “upgrade”. This is a basic operation available everywhere else but Safari, without having to dig into the details after Apple apparently decided that they know better than their users. OK, you say they do things only for a reason. Riddle me this Batman, what is the reason?

Hey there! I noticed this too with the last update and it’s super annoying. A workaround is to take two fingers and double tap the link, it will open in a new tab.

open in new tab is removed and new tab is easy now, just hold the link and drag to bar it will open new tab
