How to Choose your Safari Shoes

When preparing for an African safari there are so many things to remember. Vaccinations, insurance, flights, clothes… Then at the last minute you remember the shoes! What are the best safari shoes to pack? should I take safari boots instead? Will flip flops do? We’re here to help you answer that question.

My personal recommendation is to not take more than 3 pairs of shoes for safari in total. I used to always take 4 pairs and one would end up never being worn. Shoes are one of the most important items on any trip, but also one of the bulkiest. And if you take the wrong shoes your trip might be ruined. If you are careful about how you choose your safari shoes, you won’t take up unnecessary space in your luggage and you’ll have a great trip.

Safari Shoes for a Walking Safari

Choose an eco friendly flip flop., safari sandals, waterproof safari sandals for your water based safari: okavango delta and beyond, shoes for staying at a lodge.

When you visit Africa to see wildlife, it is very likely that you’ll take a walking safari , even if it’s a short one. And you should! A walking safari will get you closer to the animals, and you will find yourself immersed in their habitat. And you’ll need the best shoes for safari to enjoy it.

Getting proper walking safari shoes  is important for several reasons. First of all, if you’re walking in the bush, you need good closed-toe shoes, never flip flops or sandals. I hate to break it to you, but snakes, spiders, and scorpions are never far from your feet. And your toes are delicious. If you are super-paranoid about being bitten by a snake, take  mid or tall hiking boots (safari boots) instead of low hiking shoes so your ankles are also covered. I personally think it’s overkill to wear tall hiking boots and they’re not that comfortable in the hot months. My feet suffer from claustrophobia. For me, low-height hybrid hiking shoe/ trainers are the perfect safari shoes.

I always bring my KEEN hiking shoes . They are an older model of the Targhee II. I just love them. I bought them second hand (they were hardly worn and I was super broke) a few years ago for our week-long hike in Yellowstone and have been using them ever since (that makes them 6 year old!). They are breathable and they dry super quick. This is handy if you are clumsy like me and tend to accidentally step into creeks and rivers. Keen hiking shoes have what they call KeenDry ( a waterproof breathable membrane). Not just a gimmick, it totally works and they are dry within a couple hours. When choosing your walking safari shoes, I always recommend to get shoes that are waterproof and breathable .

For an African safari I also wear  hike ultra light smartwool socks . I know, wool sounds hot, but they wick moisture well and you can wear them for many days and they don’t smell. It’s amazing! Since my hiking shoes are the most bulky shoes that I take on an African safari, they are the ones I wear on the plane. Make sure you choose hiking shoes that also function well for daily wear, and not some that will end up in the bottom of your wardrobe for months.

Shoes for Camping while on a Safari

If you are like us and prefer to camp while on a safari, you should pack a pair of flip flops to use while showering. Your feet will thank you when using the communal showers.

You can also wear flip flops around camp, but always bear in mind that there might be lots of thorns around. Hal’s flip flops were ruined after just 5 days of camping in Botswana because of it. And some of the thorns are pretty long and thick and can easily puncture through the flip flop and into your feet. Eek! (Photo below.) On a later trip to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park , Hal got some flip flops with much thicker soles and wore them for 5 weeks straight, no problem! We advise not to wear flip flops at night since there might be snakes or scorpions around and you won’t see them in the dark. Cover your feet at night.

Patagonia : Their Environmental and Social Responsibility   is known worldwide. They  donate 1% of their sales to environmental organizations around the world. For example, through grants and donations, Patagonia supports Buffalo Field Campaign, a non profit that protects Yellowstone’s wild buffalo and their habitat.

Chaco : I own a pair of Chaco flip flops and I love them. I also just found out about their sustainability. Their ReChaco program allows you to send your old Z/sandal for repairs (resoled or restrapped) for free. Almost 300,000 sandals have been repaired so far, keeping a lot of still usable shoes off the landfill. Also, the webbing on their sandals is made of recycled plastic bottles! I own the Chaco’s Chillos flip flop on the color Sadie Sparrow. This ones are great to wear around campgrounds, and they are fine if they get a little wet. For men, I’d try the Chaco Men’s Lowdown Flip Flop . These are lightweight and have a 3.0 MM lug outsole for no slip traction.

Olli : Natural and fair trade flip flops. Made from natural rubber, these flip flops are also good for the people who make them. Olli is a partner of the the Fair Rubber Association in Sri Lanka. Every pair of flip-flops that you buy will provide education, safe working conditions, & improve the life of the very people who made them! Search Olli flip flops now .

While you can wear flip flops as your everyday shoe in hot weather, my preferred choice for safari shoes are good quality sandals with a thick sole and with a bit more foot support. Thick soles are for the thorn issues and support for comfort. You can use them camping, around the lodge, or even on a light hike if you don’t want to take hiking shoes (but always use closed shoes when hiking in the bush, seriously). My favorites are from from companies that build high quality sandals that last a long time like Taos Footwear (my absolute favorite!) or Merrell’s sandals.  A nice pair of safari sandals will be your go-to shoe on a safari so don’t skimp.

If you are lucky enough to spend some time in the Okavango delta on a mokoro or kayaking or any other water-based activities you need some good water sandals with an ankle strap. Flip flops might get stuck in the mud and you don’t want to lose them underwater. The perfect safari sandals for this would be something like Chacos’s sandals or Teva’s sandals .

If you are splurging and treating yourself to a nice lodge stay, you might want to give your dusty sandals a rest and wear something more fancy for dinner time. A pair of black or brown shoes/sandals go with everything and you can also wear them if you go out into town.

I love Taos Footwear, and I have a few of their sandals. I take my black Taos Trophy sandal to wear around cities and around the lodge at dinner time. It is cute, super comfy, and can take short hikes. I also take a pair of Taos Perfect sandal . Yes, it is called perfect, and I would agree! Super comfy, extra cute, and can also take you on short and easy hikes. Mine is the ‘bruschetta’ color. Since I have the other sandals in black, I wanted something more colorful.

• You’re most important shoe is an every day comfortable sandal .
• If you are going to do any nature walking at all (and you really ought to!) then a closed-toed lightweight hiking shoe is a must have . If you can only take two pairs of shoes, wear these on the plane and pack your sandals.
• If you have a little extra room then throw in some light weight flip flops for around camp. Or go nuts and take a cute pair of dressier shoes for those nights out and dinners at the lodge.
• And if you’re going to be spending a fair amount of time in and out of the water, bring a good heavy-duty sandal with ankle straps like a Teva or Chaco.

I enjoyed reading your article, but I have some questions. My wife and I are leaving for a stay at Governors Safari camp on the Mara river in two weeks (December 2 2019). We've never been on this type of trip. We've been following the weather forecasts...they've had plenty of rain and it looks like it will rain while we're there. I have no idea how much we'll be walking in the bush, it's a 4x4 deal, I'd rather be able to get by with some sturdy sandals but I'm thinking we might need waterproof leather hiking shoes/boots. Your thoughts?

Hi Jim, Sounds like a great trip! I think some good low waterproof hiking shoes would do the trick. (or mid-height if you want more ankle support or deeper mud/water) They're good for everyday wearing (they basically look like sneakers) Cristina has a pair of Keen shoes that have lasted her forever. Here's an example of a low Keen waterproof hiking shoe that I use for everyday use and is very functional in muddy hiking conditions Keen Men's Oakenridge waterproof shoes (unless you get into water/mud more than a couple inches deep, then I switch over to rubber boots!) How Long Is Your Trip?

When it comes to picking the best safari shoes, we need to remember what’s right for one person and their trip isn’t right for everyone.

That’s why I want to kick off this article, by getting you to think about your specific trip and what shoes might best suit your needs.

To start with, you need to think about where, when and how long you’re planning to safari for.

If you’re simply visiting one country in Africa on a short 1 week trip, then you may be able to take a couple of pairs of different shoes because you won’t be limited by weight in the same way as if you’re undertaking a long overland trip through many countries in Africa, likely living out of a backpack you have to carry.

On a short trip therefore, where you’re likely to have a suitcase you can wheel around, taking a few pairs of shoes might not be such a problem.

If you’ve got a heavy backpack to carry, you might limit yourself to just one!

Where and When Are You Going on Safari?

Next, we need to consider where and when you’re going to safari i.e. in which country and at what time of year.

This will drastically affect what the best shoes for your safari are, because you may need something waterproof if travelling in the rainy season, something well insulated if it’s likely to be cold, or something breathable if you’re travelling in the height of summer.

For example, the jungles of East Africa (if you’re heading to see the gorillas ) have very damp, humid conditions then certainly require boots that are waterproof and have good grip.

Compare this is to travelling to Etosha National Park in Namibia in the height of summer, where the dry, desert-like conditions here and searing heat, mean keeping your feet cool will be of greatest importance.

What Type of Safari Are You Taking?

The third thing to think about when considering what the best shoes for your African safari might be is the type of safari you’ll be enjoying.

Full driving safaris, which are common in parks such as the Serengeti in Tanzania or the Masai Mara in Kenya , where dangerous predators mean you can’t exit a vehicle, will necessitate very different footwear to if you’re enjoying a walking safari with rhinos in eSwatini (formerly Swaziland) or Zimbabwe, where physical trekking on uneven ground will mean good, study boots are very important.

Practical Points to Think About For Your Safari Shoes

Safari shoe colour.

One thing I know a lot of people think about when it comes to the best shoes for their African safari is colour… because I get a lot of questions about this!

And while colour doesn’t matter a huge amount, I always suggest a natural shade like black, grey, brown, navy or dark green are best.

There are a few reasons for this, although none have very much to do with the wildlife, given most safari animals only see in black and white.

Instead, natural colours make for the best safari shoes in my opinion, simply because a) they match with most other clothing colours well, which makes packing a lot easier and b) they show up the dirt less, which makes cleaning them (or not) a lot easier!

I also personally think natural colours look a lot more stylish than say, a bright pink pair, but this is a cosmetic point, rather than anything practical and certainly down to personal choice.

Waterproofing

We’ve touched on this already, but if you’re travelling anywhere in Africa during the rainy season, waterproof safari shoes are a must.

Even outside of rainy season, humid conditions in East Africa make waterproof boots necessary in my opinion.

Equally, heavy morning dews, which are not uncommon in Southern Africa, make a safari shoe made from Gore-Tex a good option here too.

Temperature

Safari shoes that keep your feet cool through good ventilation, will definitely make your safari a more enjoyable experience, especially if you’re travelling in the summer season in Southern Africa, for example, where the temperatures can be scorching between the months of December and February.

However, travelling here in the winter months (June to August) can be very cold and in this case, a warm, well-insulated boot would be best.

As travellers, we always need to consider weight when packing and selecting something lightweight as your safari shoe of choice is a great option.

Not only will this keep luggage weight down, but having a big, clumpy boot on your foot when you’re clambering in and out of safari vehicles, trying to set up camp or going trekking is never fun.

Of course, you have to balance this against protection, but do remember that as light as possible is a good motto to stick to in my book.

And so we get to protection.

A good sole is very important on any safari shoe in order to help support the arch of your foot and protect it from knocks and bumps.

Ankle support can range from a low-rise trainer, runner or walking shoe, to a full height hiking boot, so whatever you choose, just make sure they fit snuggly around the ankle to offer it support.

When it comes to protection, a mid-length hiking boot can be a good option here, balancing the best of both worlds in terms of protection and weight.

Flexibility

Again, it’s about a trade-off when it comes to protection vs flexibility in a safari shoe, but generally, I would lean towards something lighter and more flexible than something heavy and stiffer.

This is the problem with very sturdy leather hiking boots in my opinion, they are just too heavy and too stiff.

A light, mid-length hiking boot, made from breathable Gore-Tex, or a sturdy trail running shoe with good support and a thick sole, would make much better options if you ask me.

But one feature where you shouldn’t compromise, is grip.

This is key in any safari shoe you choose and whether it’s a good sandal, a light runner or a sturdy hiking boot, good grip is a must.

5 Top Safari Shoes Based on Practical Features

#1 Binoculars – They don’t’ need to be expensive, but my cheap Eurohike pair were a great investment.

#2 Toilet Paper – Bush toilets don’t generally provide it!

#3 Natural Sunscreen & Sun Hat – Things get hot on safari so do be prepared.

#4 Good Camera & Lens – An absolute must if you’re looking to capture the incredible landscape and wildlife. I love my mirrorless Sony A6000 , which is light, compact and robust – ideal for Africa travel.

#5 Sarong – Whether it’s covering your shoulders from the sun, using as a pillow on long bus journeys or protecting yourself from dust on safari, a sarong is a great multi-purpose travel item for Africa.

Best Women’s Shoes for an African Safari

I’m putting in this section about the best women’s shoes for an African safari quite simply because many women email me with this question, so ladies I’m dedicating this part to you!

We’ve touched on the colour issue above, but to reiterate, I highly suggest keeping it stylish and coordinated with natural colour footwear that is grey or black.

I’d also see if you can extend your shoe allowance to 2 pairs – both a good mid-length hiking boot / decent walking shoe and a pair of excellent, support sandals will come in very handy.

This should allow you to cover most bases in terms of walking / vehicle safaris and chilling at a lodge / camping, as well as across both South and East Africa if you’re on a long trip.

Remember your feet will swell in the heat and you might be using your hiking boot with a thick sock, so factor these elements in too when trying on your safari shoe.

Speaking from my own experience as a female traveller, I wore my Birkenstock sandals during almost all my safaris in Southern Africa because it was so hot.

However, in East Africa, I wore nothing but by brown Doc Martens due to the wet and muddy conditions.

Note these weren’t ideal, but I was on a huge overland trip from Cairo to Cape Town at the time, so these were the type of boots that covered all bases – fashion and practical – for such a diverse adventure.

Same applies to safari shoes, but based on my experiences in Southern, East, Northern and the Horn of Africa, I’ve come up with 3 great pairs that between them cover all eventualities.

The choice of women's safari shoes or boots depends on the type of activities you want to do in Africa. If you intend to hunt or do any serious bush walking you will need comfortable and durable boots that are up to the job. If you are going to be mostly sitting in a vehicle, game viewing or staying around a camp or bush lodge, your choice of footwear is not that critical. However, if you are staying in a vehicle, a sensible pair of shoes is to be recommended, rather than flip-flops or sandals, just in case you need to get out to go behind a bush or if the vehicle breaks down.

Sandals or other casual shoes for relaxing in camp or game lodge still need to fairly robust. Often the walkways between your tent or chalet to the dining area, for example, are not paved but are sand or gravel. So strappy white sling-backs with high heels are not ideal.

In the evenings when the mosquitoes are most active, you may want to put on shoes that cover your feet unless you slather your feet in insect repellent while wearing sandals. Remembering, of course, that DEET-based repellents tend to destroy synthetic materials.

It is important to not go around barefoot outside in the African bush during the day or night - thorns, scorpions, jiggers and stinging ants are just a few hazards besides just stubbing your toe. So slip-on sandals or clogs are the most convenient footwear for camp life.

Essential Women's Safari Shoes Guidelines

Women's safari shoes size and fit.

If you are going hunting or walking in the bush your footwear is extremely important and the points below are specifically for these activities. Buy the best quality possible rather than a cheaper option.

Getting the right size and fit of your safari boot or shoe is essential. As with all footwear, size and fit may vary with different boots or shoes plus you will have accommodate any foot irregularities you may have like bunions, hammer-toes etc.

• Check that you can easily move all your toes.
• Check your foot does not slide around in the boot.
• Check that no part of your foot is being squashed within the boot.
• Check the whole of your whole foot is comfortably contained in the boot.

Make sure the boots are well-fitting and well worn-in . Don't arrive with brand new unworn boots. This is particularly important if your boots are made completely or partially of full-grain leather or Nubuck. Boot or shoe uppers made of synthetic material do need wearing-in but not as much.

Women's Safari Shoes Terrain And Tread

• Check the terrain you'll be hunting before the purchase of new boots. This will help with the decision on boot height and tread pattern.
• If the terrain is primarily hilly, uneven and rocky, you may prefer a medium-high boot which will protect your ankle if you go over on it. You can also tuck your trousers in a higher boot, if you need to, which will also help to keep out tsetse flies and other debris.
• For African hunting opt for the softest sole you can get away with on the terrain you are hunting. Hard soles, though more durable, make more noise when walking.
• Your choice of tread pattern also depends on the terrain you will be hunting. A deep, thick tread will improve traction in the wet or on sloping surfaces.

Other Useful Women's Safari Shoes Features

• Some water-resistance may be useful especially when hunting in the early morning when there is a heavy dew. Fully water-proof boots are probably unnecessary for most African hunts and they may make your feet very hot and sweaty.
• Have a spare pair of equally comfortable shoes in case your main pair get wet. There is nothing worse than walking in soaking boots.
• Use whatever boot height is comfortable for you. It is often useful to be able to tuck your trousers in, so tsetse flies and grass-seeds etc cannot gain access.
• Don't forget to take spare laces .

Ideal boots for me.

I’ve put my Courteney Warrior boots through two years of continuous use, so I am now in a good position to offer credible feedback. I live in south west England, where it’s mostly damp and often wet, which has destroyed the stitches of a handful of more well-known hiking brands. But not these. I’m no hunter and as such they are mostly used for drier dog walks and gardening, while they’ve also taken me across the Trossachs in Scotland, Brecon Beacons in Wales, and Tatra mountain range in Poland. And the Big Smoke on occasions! They’ve shaped well to my feet and are the most slipper-like outdoor boots I own, getting softer with use. Not a blister from day one. The cleat soles have barely worn, with the advantage of not collecting lots of stones and twigs. These boots are virtually indestructible. The best ever. Worth every penny. Happy to promote a worthy, more ethical and niche brand in a world of mass production.

My 14 year old son has officially taken ownership of my old Courteneys.   I have passed them onto the next generation and unlike Sting’s “Dead Man’s Boots” he seems to love them as much as I did.

Vintage 1998 they started their life with a 4 day hike in the Chimanimanis. Not a single blister. Since then they have hiked in Europe and Australia, been dubbined about 12 times, grown green mould in the damp Adelaide winter, and still have their hard-wearing original laces!

My son hiked in the Morialta Conservation Park and he loves them. Not a single blister.

Finest, best fitting, and toughest boot

This is the second pair of Courteney boots I have purchased in the past two years. They are by far the finest, best fitting, and toughest boot I have found. I wear them daily around town, and also hunt with them hard, once a month on the desert hills of the Tejon Ranch, here in California.  The boots break in fast and they never let my feet get wet. Once while riding a horse, a branch from a tree was stuck in the toe. Yet it didn’t penetrate the boot. The only flaw I can find is when applying the polish that is supplied at time of purchase, the beautiful appearance of the gameskins are subdued into a brown colour. Even though the boots lose their luster after a while, they still perform flawlessly. I would like to thank you for your excellent craftsmanship in these boots – even the laces hold up.

Most comfortable pair of boots i’ve ever owned.

I’ve been wearing a pair of your Selous boots now for four months. Wow!!! I can honestly say they’re the best made, most comfortable pair of boots I’ve ever owned. I was a little hesitant at first to spend almost $400 on a pair of boots but what a difference at the end of the day!  Anyone who has ever walked out of the wilderness with “hot feet” knows every painful step is worth $5 to avoid. Four hundred dollars is CHEAP for these boots. I don’t even think of them as boots anymore, more like a matching pair of Rolls Royces for the feet. I walked the length of the Pacific Crest Trail (Mexican border to the Canadian border) last summer in my Courtney boots (Ostrich skin) with nary a blister. This was in celebration of my 60th birthday and to commemorate having done it 40 years earlier at age 20. My Courtney boots held up better than the technical mountaineering boots I bought from the North Face lo those many years ago. And everyone at my shooting club still says they’re the best looking shoes they’ve seen. Hell, women even stop me in the grocery store and ask me where I bought them. 8 days underwater.

We were on the houseboat on Lake Kariba which sank, along with a pair of Courteneys I had bought for a friend in South Africa. The Best Shoes for a Safari

Choosing the wrong footwear can make your safari a sour one.

Getting the wrong shoes can actually make or break your safari trip. Especially if you will be venturing into the African wilderness where there are no shops or retail store to get a shoe replacement.

This article will help you identify some comfortable shoes that you can take on your African safari.

Make sure you have walked them in before you depart for your safari so you are comfortable and comfortable with the shoes you choose.

While traveling you want to minimize on travel accessories and definitely leave fins, goggles and gadgets at home. Same with shoes only carry the shoes you are going to use on your travel.

You will need some light comfortable shoes or even trainers for when you are in the cities and towns. You will need hiking shoes if you will be on safari and possibly walking on the African savannah. And finally you will need a pair of sandals or flip flops is you will be spending time at the beach and also for the evenings when you are at the lodge or hotel.

If you are walking through muddy forest conditions, sand, or river crossings, a medium-high-rise, waterproof boot with a built-in tongue will keep water and sand out and keep you comfortable.

You should expect your hiking boots to show less dirt if they are darker. Go for a comfortable, strong, and lightweight pair of shoes. For wet conditions, you must purchase a boot with traction in its soles, and you should have higher ankle padding for support and to prevent pesky ants.

If you are paranoid about being bitten by a snake, wear mid- or tall hiking boots (safari boots) instead of low hiking shoes for your ankle protection. Wearing tall hiking boots is overkill for me personally, and they can be very uncomfortable in the hot months

It is also important to pack light. Shoes are often heavy, bulky travel items and will cost you more with the airlines and also be an inconvenience while traveling.

Heat and Footwear

Understanding the basic principles of heat transfer is crucial for selecting the right footwear. The main mechanisms affecting footwear are:

If you’re traveling to areas with extremely hot temperatures, such as Namibia or the Kalahari, it’s crucial to consider that leather might not be the best choice for clothing or gear. Leather tends to retain heat and moisture, which can lead to discomfort and potential health issues in hot climates.

Synthetic safari boots do not have the classic look, but they weigh less and have more flexibility than leather boots which tend to be more expensive. You can use them to walk around camp, you should choose thick-soled sandals. Thorns are an issue in Africa, and thin-soled sandals will not protect your feet.

The best sandals I have used are from companies that make high-quality sandals that last a long time even after your African safari adventure.

It is important to pack light when going on an African safari. Comfort is very important and you shouldn’t place too much weight on your feet. It is also important to dress accordingly at the lodge and beach.

Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. • Pack women's safari shirts which are not only safari-suitable, but which are also safari-styled and allow you to stay comfortable while looking and feeling feminine. As we usually say: stay in a tent on safari; don't wear a tent-shaped shirt. Women's safari shirts can and should be stylish.
• Women's safari shirts should be khaki or shades of brown and green to blend in best with the environment while on safari.
• Women's safari shirts which are long-sleeved allow you to roll your sleeves up and down when you need to stay cool, keep warm, or to avoid sunburn on your arms. Therefore, we recommend that you pack more long-sleeved than short-sleeved safari shirts in your safari packing mix.
• Collared women's safari shirts give you added protection from sunburn.
• Important features for women's safari shirts include: ability to wick moisture to keep you cool, high level of sun protection (SPF50+ is best), and an anti-insect fabric finish to reduce your chances of being bitten by most flying and biting insects.
• Pack more women's safari shirts made from man-made fibres (polyamide) than natural fibres (such as cotton). Man-made fibres are better at wicking moisture from the skin - and it is this movement of moisture which keeps you cool.

• Pack a women's safari jacket or women's safari fleece for all safaris. Opt for either a long-sleeved safari fleece or safari jacket or a safari fleece vest depending on the season - as the temperature does drop on safari.
• Why does it get cold in Africa - isn't is hot all the time? The short answer is no, it is not hot all the time. The reasons for the cold include: African winters, wind chill on safaris in open 4x4s (dipping into valleys and drainage lines also adds an extra bite of cold), early morning starts and late evening finishes for safari activities, land-locked countries, and many safari areas being high above sea level - the Maasai Mara & Serengeti (and most of East Africa) are the height of some ski resorts at 1,400 meters above sea level. Botswana, parts of Zambia, and Namibia are also more or less 1,000 meters above sea level.
• The safari experience is similar to a desert trip where it starts off cold in the mornings, usually heats up by midday to warm or hot, but then may become cold again in the evenings. It worth bearing in mind that, as animals are more active when it is cooler - with hotter temperatures at midday - the earlier you will go on safari, which means the cooler it will be. Again, you should definitely pack a women's safari fleece or women's safari jacket for your safari. We have given this advice to clients who have ignored it and returned from an October safari in Botswana to tell us that, yes, they did indeed get cold despite the midday heat.
• For the African winter, pack a long-sleeved safari jacket or safari fleece and, for the summer, either a vest safari jacket or safari fleece, but then wear a long-sleeved safari shirt underneath so that the sleeves help to keep you warm.
• Colour is still key when choosing the correct safari fleece or safari jacket, especially on early morning walks. Pack safari fleeces or jackets which are made from neutral shades such as khaki, green, or brown.
• For safari travel over the rainy season, pack a high-quality, waterproof safari jacket which is proven to actually work. For East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda), the rains generally occur in two parts: the longer monsoon in April and May and then the shorter rains around November. Higher safari areas such as the Ngorongoro Crater catch the wind from the sea and it may rain at any time of the year. Southern Tanzania differs from this and is similar to the rainy season in Zambia, Botswana, and northern Mozambique - and falls between late November and late March, often extending into April. As a general rule, if one had to ask "when is Africa always dry?" - the answer would be May to October, with regional rains still possible in some parts. Please also note that the South African rainy season is split down the middle of the country, with the east receiving rain through summer and the west a winter rainfall area. That winter rainfall can push through in cold fronts to the east of the country too.
• Having lived in Africa through the rains we are also able to advise that the daytime temperature goes from very hot before the rains start, to much cooler once the rains have settled in. The difference may be as much as 10 to 15 degrees celsius below the average temperatures and so again we advise that a fleece or jacket is packed to keep you warm.

• If you are going on a classic game drive type of safari, then pack comfortable women's safari shoes to wear on game drive but which are able to double as good walking shoes for a walk in the bush - an activity we highly recommend. Note that if you do not have walking shoes with you on game drive then your guide may decide against a quick impromptu walk in the bush
• Also take a pair of women's safari shoes to wear around the camp. These may be the same pair as your select for the above, but it may also be a pair of cooler sandals, pumps, or similar.
• For full-on walking safaris make sure you take women's safari shoes which are made for longer hikes - and ensure that you walk them in properly before you go on safari. You may prefer low rise canvas trail shoes or leather higher rise boots - the preference is purely personal.
• If you are going on a walking safari in sandy areas (check with the walking safari company you have booked with) then we suggest that you pack higher rise boots with a built in tongue - such as our Rufiji™ APU Safari Combat Boots - as this will minimise the amount of sand which goes into the shoe which will cause discomfort.
• We would still take a a pair of cooler women's shoes or sandals for before and after walks when around the camp.
• Safari tip: always check your shoes for small snakes, scorpions, spiders and insects before putting them on.

• Pack comfortable, lightweight women's safari trousers which are made in safari-suitable colours such as shades of khaki, brown, and green. Trousers made from anti-insect fabric will give you extra defence from most biting insects too.
• Women's safari zip-off/convertible trousers are often the safari trousers of choice for women simply due to their versatility - no matter how hot or cold it is on safari. Use them as trousers when cool, shorts when hot - and they save on valuable packing space by being two garments in one. The legs on women's safari convertible pants also give added protection from the sun and defence from most biting insects - especially when treated with built-in SPF and anti-insect finish. For walking safaris, having separate waterproof leg sections which provide insect defence work well given the morning dew on early morning walks - ensuring your legs stay drier and reducing bites (although you should always apply insect repellent for ticks and other insects).
• If you prefer to wear stand-alone women's safari trousers and women's safari shorts, then make sure you work out the duration of the activity and wear either trousers or the shorts depending on the weather. While other trousers are perhaps more stylish than women's safari zip-off trousers, there is no use starting off warm when it's cold in the morning only to sweat in the heat later on in the day. Another option if you prefer separate safari trousers and safari shorts would be to take shorts or trousers with you on each safari activity in a satchel or daypack and change while on the activity.
• The ideal women's safari trousers and shorts should offer you a good level of style with a feminine cut. They should also be lightweight, strong, provide a high level of sun protection (SPF50+ is best), and have an anti-insect finish. Wicking is less important from a sweat point of view as your legs don't sweat as much as your upper body, but still consider wicking as an important feature to ensure that, should your trousers get wet from the rain or a water-based activity - or even just the morning dew while walking - that they dry very quickly.
• Again, while your lower body does not feel the heat as much as your upper body, always consider women's safari trousers which are made from man-made fibres (such as polyamide) over those made from natural fibres (such as cotton). Women's safari trousers and safari shorts made from man-made fibres will also crease less and dry faster when you wash them on your safari and travels.

• For the best protection from the strength of the midday sun in Africa - for your neck and face - pack a wide-brimmed women's safari hat.
• With mean high temperatures reaching mid-20 to mid-30 degrees Celsius on most safaris and with safari areas in Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, and Zambia high above sea level, the effects of the sun will be pronounced and the risk of being burnt by the sun will be high. A wide-brimmed women's safari hat is literally your first line of defence against sunburn.
• Wide-brimmed women's safari hats also provide shelter when it rains. We find that a wide-brimmed safari hat definitely makes it more comfortable when you are caught out on a walk or game drive by a sudden thunderstorm or tropical shower, as at least your face remains dry and fewer drops go into your eyes.
• Colour is key when choosing a women's safari hat - with neutral shades such as khaki, green, or brown the best. Your safari hat will often be the most conspicuous part of you while viewing wildlife on a walking safari.
• Pack a women's safari hat which suits your safari style. Fortunately, there are more styles available for women today which range from leather hats to classically-styled indie and panama-shaped hats.
• Modern wide-brimmed women's safari hats are also conveniently packable and are easy manipulate back into shape. For the most part, your women's wide-brimmed safari hat should keep you warm enough, but why take the risk? Please also take note of the altitude of the area in which you are going on safari.
