25 Relaxation Trip Ideas to Clear Your Mind

1. unwind in mendoza, argentina's famous wine region in the andes.

travel for relax

Located on a plateau in the stunning Andean mountains, Mendoza is Argentina's largest wine region. The region is well known for its Malbec grapes that produce a full-bodied wine with juicy, dark fruit characteristics and a smoky finish. It pairs perfectly with an Argentinian steak.

If you love wine, Mendoza is the perfect place for a relaxing trip. With over 1,500 wineries, delicious Argentine restaurants and boutique vineyard hotels, you are in for a treat.

A perfect day đŸ·: Hire a private driver to shuttle you to two wineries in the morning for tastings and tours, then to a third for a delectable lunch. Back at your boutique hotel, let it all soak in and take in the views of the vineyards, mountains and sunset. It's a relaxing vacation filled with exceptional food and wine!

See our Argentina itinerary for the best wineries to visit.

2. Go beach hopping in Rio De Janeiro

travel for relax

Rio De Janeiro is known for its iconic beaches that have a fun atmosphere. Socializing and hanging out at the beach every day is a way of life for Cariocas (those born in Rio). If you're looking for tropical vibes with an energetic culture, Rio is the place to be.

Spend your days beach hopping and soaking in the hot sun. Have a lazy beach day at Ipanema beach and grab a drink and some appies afterwards at one of the sidewalk bars in the neighbourhood. The next day, lounge at Praia Vermelha Beach and take the cablecar next door up to Sugarloaf Mountain for some refreshing drinks with panoramic views.

See our list of 10 non-touristy things to do in Rio and start planning your trip.

3. Find solitude in Tofino, a surf town located on Canada's wild west coast

travel for relax

Tofino is the perfect nature escape. Located on the west coast of Vancouver Island, the surf capital of Canada is wild and remote, but also ticks off all the boxes for a luxurious stay. There is a good selection of luxury lodges, boutique hotels and cozy Airbnbs you can choose from with gorgeous views of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding forest. Tofino also has a burgeoning food scene with trendy restaurants serving Pacific-Northwest cuisine.

A perfect day 🌊 : Start your morning off right at the spa with a massage treatment. After deeply relaxing, head out for a mid afternoon walk along the beach and take special note of the old growth cedar forests and the pure dense air. After dinner return to the beach and have a bonfire under the stars or hang back in your room by the cozy fireplace with a glass of champagne. There's nothing quite like the sounds of a crackling fire alongside the breaking ocean waves.

Our top relaxing hotel pick: Wickaninnish Inn . The fabulous boutique hotel is perched on a rocky cliff overlooking the ocean and is steps away from Chesterman Beach. It has an excellent spa and a fine dining restaurant with 240° views of the ocean. The Wickaninnish Inn is part of the Relais & Chateaux brand, which is a collection of first-class landmark hotels and restaurants from around the world.

See our list of 17 best things to do in Tofino .

4. Visit free-spirited Salt Spring Island for a nature escape

travel for relax

The bohemian Gulf Island located between Vancouver and Vancouver Island is known for its beautiful nature, artisan culture and organic, locally grown food.

Enjoy island life at one of the eclectic Airbnbs or charming boutique hotels. There are so many fun things to discover on the island. Shop at the Saturday Market, browse the farm stands, have a wine tasting at the wineries, visit a goat cheese farm, enjoy lunch at the cidery or unwind at a spa in the forest.

Take it slow, there is no rush, there are no traffic lights, you're now on island time . You may notice that the most relaxing effect occurs after your trip, as you reminisce about the simpler way of life that many live on the island.

See our full list of fun things to do on Salt Spring Island.

5. Pamper yourself at Sparkling Hill in BC's wine region

travel for relax

This is a hotel that we plan on staying in . We don't plan excursions, we might take a walk around the outdoor trail but we do bring lots of snacks and Prosecco. From the moment our bags are taken, our Sparkling Hill relaxation ritual begins.

A perfect day 🧖‍♀ 🧖: You've woken up leisurely just in time to make it for breakfast. Today is massage day and you have elected to add to it from a list of over 100 treatments. Grab a tea and tuck into your book or magazines for the afternoon. Your biggest effort will be washing up and dressing up for a well earned dinner and cocktails. Don't forget to put a bottle of Prosecco on ice before dinner so you can continue your romantic evening with a candle lit bath. You will be glad you remembered to bring the tea lights and that bag of rose petals from the florist.

See our list of the 17 best weekend getaways from Vancouver for more details.

6. De-stress in the Canadian Rockies at a luxury mountain hotel

travel for relax

During the daytime go for a scenic canoe on the lake, pamper yourself at the spa, or enjoy lunch surrounded by flowers on the outdoor terraces. As the sun goes down and the chill sets in, dine at Walliser Stube and enjoy the bubbling cheese fondue. Afterwards, sip cocktails at Fairview bar, a striking art deco bar located in the hotel. The raw and rugged beauty found throughout this land has a wonderful grounding effect that is sure to take away your stress.

See our Banff & Lake Louise itinerary and start planning you trip.

7. Go glamping on the West Coast of Canada

travel for relax

British Columbia is one of the best places to go glamping (luxury camping) in Canada. From quirky spots like decked out Airstreams with hot tubs in the middle of a forest, to luxury tents with queen sized beds looking out onto the ocean, there are many unique options to choose from.

Check out our two travel guides for some incredible glamping experiences in nature:

  • For oceanfront glamping at Fossil Beach Farm , check out our Hornby Island glamping guide
  • For a decked out Airstream experience at WOODS on Pender , check out our Pender Island travel guide

8. Head to the Cotswolds in the English countryside for a tranquil nature escape

travel for relax

Escape the bustling city for the peaceful English countryside. The picturesque villages, gentle rolling hills and grazing sheep in the Cotswolds feel something of a fairytale. The region has a great selection of cozy boutique hotels that offer the right amount of luxury to unwind.

With over 25 towns and villages in the Cotswolds, it can feel overwhelming choosing where to stay. We chose to stay near Broadway village since it ticked off all the boxes for a quintessential Cotswolds experience. The 'Jewel of the Cotswolds' is charming, yet large enough to have a good selection of cafes, restaurants, shops and unique hotels. The historic village also has nice walking paths through the countryside that inspired famous artists like Claude Monet and Oscar Wilde.

See our Cotswolds itinerary to start planning your trip .

9. Wind down in Cap-Ferret, a chic town in France with remote Atlantic beaches

travel for relax

Located in the southwest of France, Cap Ferret is a chic beach town with a relaxed vibe. It's where the French like to escape to for the weekend. Not to be confused with Cap Ferrat, a glitzy town on the French Riveria filled with jetsetters and mega yachts, Cap Ferret is luxurious, but discreetly so.

Since the laidback beach town is located on the tip of a peninsula, it has miles and miles of wild, remote Atlantic beaches that are excellent for swimming or surfing. It's also known as the oyster capital of France. You will find many oceanside restaurants serving fresh seafood and cold French white wine.

A perfect day 🏖 : Your first stop today is the Cap Ferret market, a perfect place to get a beach blanket or a chic outfit to match the seaside lifestyle. Fresh oysters are on the menu for lunch and disappear quickly alongside delightfully refreshing chilled bottles of Entre-Deux-Mers wine. That beach blanket will come in handy in the late afternoon as you find a unique spot on the golden sand between historic seaside bunkers and the wide expanse of the Atlantic. Don't forget the Champagne! Tomorrow will be a good day for a bike ride, or a repeat.

See our full list of 9 fun things to do in Cap Ferret .

10. Enjoy Greek island life on Santorini, a natural wonder of the world.

travel for relax

Santorini is considered one of the most beautiful islands in Greece. The magnificent island is actually a submerged caldera that was formed by a volcanic eruption around 2,000 BC.

Santorini is picture perfect with its incredible sunsets, beaches and white buildings overlooking the sea. It's a romantic place to have a honeymoon or celebrate your anniversary. Your days will consist of walking around the sunny island, lounging at the beach, admiring the view and feasting on delicious Greek food.

Visiting Santorini isn't cheap, especially in Oia, the most famous village on the island. See our guide on how to do Santorini on a budget without giving up too many luxuries.

11. Find tranquility in Bali, a spiritual island with extraordinary beauty

travel for relax

Bali is a magical island known for its natural beauty and unique culture. The predominantly Hindu island has stunning sites and temples throughout the island. It also has a fascinating holistic health and wellness culture. If you are seeking a trip for personal wellness, Bali is the perfect place to do it.

In Ubud, the cultural centre of Bali, you will find retreats and centres for alternative therapies like yoga, chakra energy healing, meditation and ayurveda. The city is surrounded by the rainforest and terraced rice fields, which provide tranquility and a relaxed state of mind. Ubud also has many inexpensive spas that will leave you on cloud nine. Our favourite, Karsa Spa, is located at the end of a ridge walk through the rainforest.

If you travel to the south of Bali, you will find a tropical paradise. The Bukit Peninsula is known as one of the best destinations in the world for surfing. Scooter around the island to discover white sand beaches and watch the surfers surf into sunset.

See our Bali highlights itinerary including amazing places to stay.

12. Float in the Dead Sea for a health detox

travel for relax

The Dead Sea is the lowest place on earth (420m below sea level) and the water is 8.6x saltier than the ocean! Floating in the Dead Sea was a childhood dream come true for both of us and exceeded all of our expectations (a rare occurrence!). It was one of our favourite activities during our time in Israel. It feels like you're floating in outer space!

Other than the cool effect of floating in the Dead Sea, there are many health benefits to visiting the area. The raw mud is said to remove skin impurities, provide relief for pain and reduce inflammation thanks to its unique mineral composition. Get messy and give yourself a full body mud mask at the beach and let it soak into your skin. Another unique trait of this other-worldly environment is the oxygen-rich air known to have a number of health benefits.

There are resorts at the Dead Sea, but you can easily take a day trip from Jerusalem.   See our Israel & Jordan itinerary , which includes a stop at the Dead Sea.

13. Drink wine, eat Italian cuisine and relax in the Tuscan countryside

travel for relax

Tuscany is a region in the centre of Italy known for its beautiful countryside and famous red wines made with Sangiovese grapes, such as Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti. It's a wine drinkers paradise.

Visiting Tuscany will take you out of the busy tourist centres and on a relaxing culinary journey through the iconic countryside. Driving through rolling hills to discover scenic hilltop towns and wineries is a highlight. We recommend staying at an agriturismo, an authentic farmhouse that serves guests. We stayed at a Podere Felceto , an organic olive oil farm in the Chianti wine region with beautiful views overlooking a valley. It was a perfect jumping off point to discover wineries in the area and delicious Tuscan restaurants in the nearby town of Panzano.

See our 5 day Tuscany itinerary or our ultimate 2 week Italy itinerary .

14. Explore the Amalfi Coast by yacht

travel for relax

The Amalfi Coast is one the most scenic regions in Italy. Picturesque villages scatter across a rocky cliffside overlooking the sapphire sea. The region is known for its limoncello liqueur and delicious, fresh seafood.

Driving the windy roads on the Amalfi Coast can be stressful since they are small and there are lots of tour busses. For a relaxing, entirely new way to see this gorgeous coastline, hire a yacht for the day. Your ocean voyage will take you passed beautiful beaches, houses, caves and the stunning village of Positano during golden hour. When it gets too hot, dive from the bow into the blue sea or kick back with an Aperol Spritz. Don't forget to make a boat party playlist for the occasion!

See our Italy itinerary , which includes tips for staying on the Amalfi Coast and how to rent a yacht.

15. Spend time on the glamorous island of Capri

travel for relax

Capri is a glamorous and star-studded island with beautiful natural sights and aqua-green waters. Many celebs moor their mega yachts at Marina Piccolo harbour and dine and party in Capri by night. You will love Capri if you like lounging at the beach, luxury shopping and eating Italian cuisine. A fun fact: Capri's most famous dish is the Caprese salad.

See our ultimate Italy itinerary , which includes a stop in Capri.

16. Stay at a ryokan in Hakone and soak in volcanic hot spring baths

travel for relax

Hakone is a town nestled in the mountains and forest just 2 hours outside of Tokyo. It's where the Japanese like to travel to for a relaxing escape. In Hakone, most ryokans (traditional Japanese inns) have onsens, which are steaming volcanic hot spring baths brimming with mineral rich waters. Ryokans allow guests to relax in a homey and authentic Japanese setting.

The stress from work and the city seem to melt away form the moment you put on your traditional Yukata robe. You are now in another place, steeped in traditions of wellness and set in harmony with a serene landscape. It's the ultimate blissful escape into nature.

A Ryokan is a half-board experience and meals are served Kaiseki style (multi-course Japanese dishes) in your room by your dedicated room attendant. Make lots of time to soak in the public onsens. Some ryokans feature private onsens in your room if you're up for the splurge. The perfect way to cool off after the onsen is at the Ryokan bar with an ice cold Asahi beer or on your balcony with a couple shochu cocktails.

See our 2 week Japan itinerary , which includes a stop in Hakone.

17. Have an idyllic vacation in the Maldives

travel for relax

Perfect white sand beaches, crystalline turquoise waters, palm trees, over-the-water huts, dolphins jumping in the distance... is it too good to be true? We didn't believe it, but YES, this TV commercial fantasy truly exists in the Maldives. And we actually did see spinner dolphins jumping in the distance from our room!

What makes the Maldives so special is that it's not just one big island, but a group of 1,190 tiny coral islands. At times, it can feel like you're on your own private island.

A perfect day 🐬: Pinch yourself because it's not a dream. Stretch out and have your coffee as you watch the ocean flash every imaginable shade of blue. Your morning ritual continues on your leisurely bike ride to breakfast. With a belly not too full, it's time to head to the trendy pools or beach for your first dose of sun. After the sun has reached its peak, a little bit of exercise or play is in the cards, swim against the pool current generator, go snorkelling, play tennis, or workout in the ice cold gym. You've earned a big dinner! The cool night air welcomes you on your bike ride to your choice of top notch restaurants. Let the stars guide you on your way back home, just make sure you're not too wobbly!

See our review of Kandima Maldives, a lifestyle resort done right.

18. Stay at a luxury hotel in the mystical Sacred Valley

travel for relax

The Sacred Valley of Peru has a magical spirit. It was part of the Incan Empire and got its name from the high fertility of its land. The Sacred Valley is located between Cusco and Machu Picchu, making it a great stop between the two locations for a relaxing stay.

See our full review of Sol y Luna in the Sacred Valley .

Saint Lucia

19. go beach hopping around the volcanic island of st. lucia.

travel for relax

The volcanic island of St. Lucia is a natural wonder with its lush rainforests, gorgeous beaches, geothermal springs and green mountains. One of the biggest draws of the island are its dormant twin volcanic peaks called Gros Piton and Petit Piton. St. Lucia's natural beauty combined with its selection of luxurious boutique hotels and amenities make it easy to de-stress .

Spend your days exploring new beaches, sunbathing, swimming or snorkelling, and cap it off with a magical sunset over the Pitons.

See our 1 week St. Lucia itinerary , which includes our favourite beaches.

20. Relax poolside at the Marina Bay Sands, home to the largest rooftop infinity pool in the world

travel for relax

Spending the day at the 146 meter long rooftop pool is a real treat. The catch? You can only swim in it if you are a hotel guest. It's worth the splurge for the exclusive access. You are guaranteed not to have a crowded pool and you won't have to fight for a lounge chair. We loved ordering piña coladas and Singapore slings between dips. Swimming to the edge is an amazing feeling and the perfect way to take in Singapore's city skyline.

After a full day of lounging at the pool, order room service and have a romantic private dinner. Rooms have floor to ceiling windows and you can either choose a garden view, city view or harbour view.

For a fancy night out, dine at one of Asia's 50 Best Restaurants and sip cocktails at the astounding art deco bar, ATLAS.

See our fabulous 2 day Singapore itinerary and start planning your trip .

Switzerland

21. indulge in swiss cuisine and at a luxury hotel with a view of the matterhorn.

travel for relax

Zermatt is a town in the Swiss Alps known for its incredible hiking and skiing, but it can stand alone as a restful vacation with its luxury boutique hotels, breathtaking scenery and delicious Swiss cuisine. The town is equally as stunning in the summer as it is in the winter.

The incredible hosts, inspiring decor and luxurious spa at Hotel Coeur des Alpes make it our favourite hotel in the world. It also has one of the best views of the Matterhorn. The spa is excellent with a hammam, indoor plunge pool, steam room and sauna. Outside you will find a gorgeous stainless steel Swiss hot tub with marvellous views of the Matterhorn.

Zermatt is a beautiful town with many shops and restaurants. Indulge yourself with the Swiss classics like cheese fondue, meat fondue or our favourite dish, raclette. Raclette is a dish where bubbling, melted cheese is scraped off a wheel onto your plate of potatoes. It's so good! For fine dining, spoil yourself at After Seven, a Michelin starred restaurant with innovative dishes.

See our list of fun things to do in Zermatt in Summer and Zermatt in Winter .

22. Have an extravagant weekend in Bangkok

travel for relax

Bangkok is the perfect city to go all out and have an extravagant weekend. Luxury experiences like dining at Michelin starred restaurants, staying at five star hotels and drinking cocktails at rooftop bars are on par with major cities like NYC, London or Tokyo, but come at a better price.

See our 3 day Bangkok itinerary and start planning your extravagant trip .

23. Enjoy tropical waters in Koh Lipe, Thailand's secret island paradise

travel for relax

Koh Lipe is a hidden gem of an island located in the south of Thailand that is frequented by Thai vacationers. The beautiful island is known as the "Maldives of Thailand" for its white sand beaches and turquoise waters. It's also known as one of the best places for diving and snorkelling with its abundance of marine life. Koh Lipe is not the easiest island to get to, which has kept it from becoming overly developed from international tourism

See our Koh Lipe guide to start planning your trip to this tropical oasis.

24. Spend a fabulous weekend in Dubai

travel for relax

Dubai has rapidly turned from a small fishing village to one of the most opulent cities in the world. The Middle Eastern city holds over 130 Guinness World Records , like the world's tallest building, highest infinity pool, biggest ferris wheel... the list goes on! It's bold, flashy and a fun way to spend a fabulous weekend away. It's the perfect destination for those seeking luxury, warm weather and a unique setting.

See our Dubai itinerary and start planning you trip.

25. Spend time on the American Riviera in Santa Barbara

Sitting on the Pacific Ocean with the Santa Ynez mountains as its backdrop, it has transformed into a trendy beach destination with buzzing restaurants serving farm-to-fork cuisine and quirky wine tasting rooms. 7 U.S. TRIPS THAT WILL REINVIGORATE YOUR SOUL AFTER A VERY (VERY) LONG YEAR

relaxing trips in the united states grand canyon

1. See The Grand Canyon (arizona)

Our problems often seem big until we’re standing in front of something as massive and majestic as the Grand Canyon with its striated red rocks that seem to go on forever. All of the sudden those trivial little things that took up so much attention only moments before no longer matter. This immense, pilgrimage-worthy destination just seems to have that effect on people. That tiff with your sister or roommate? Just a blip on the radar in the scheme of things--especially when you consider the Grand Canyon was formed over millions of years.

relaxing trips in the united states pikes peak

2. Conquer Pikes Peak (colorado Springs, Colorado)

Sometimes things happen in life that make us forget our strength and potential. The antidote to that feeling of powerlessness? Conquering a new challenge, like perhaps one of the Centennial State’s fourteeners (mountains taller than 14,000 feet above sea level). It’s no secret that Colorado brims with beautiful places . But Pikes Peak—the highest summit of the southern Front Range of the Rockies—isn’t just pretty, it’s a quad-torching, endurance-testing, boundary-pushing adventure that will reveal levels of fortitude and resilience you never even knew existed. The sense of accomplishment you’ll feel at the top is truly unparalleled.

relaxing trips in the united states hana highway

3. Drive The Hana Highway (maui, Hawaii)

There’s something so uplifting about rolling down the windows (even better if you rent a convertible), cranking up the tunes and just hitting the open road. Maui’s Hana Highway is not only one of the 25 things you must do when in Hawaii , it’s also the most therapeutic, at least by our estimation. The gushing waterfalls, tropical flora and scenic turnouts are a poignant and picturesque reminder to stop and soak it all in. Pro tip: set aside at least two hours to complete the 52-mile-long journey, as it can be slow going with the blind turns and one-way bridges.

relaxing trips in the united states northern lights

4. Glimpse The Northern Lights

Of all the incredible, indescribable, life-changing natural phenomena in the world, the Northern Lights might just be the most eye-popping, jaw-dropping and soul-satisfying on the planet. The way the colorful streams of light illuminate the sky is truly indescribable (you just need to see it IRL). Those who have gazed up at the Northern Lights remark on the shift in perspective that such a unique and unforgettable experience provided. There are actually quite a few places to peep the aurora borealis around the globe. In the United States, Fairbanks, Alaska reigns supreme.

relaxing trips in the united states appalachian trail

5. Hike The Appalachian Trail

Need a mood boost? To quote Elle Woods, “endorphins make people happy.” We’re not just advocating for any old form of exercise (though physical activity in general has a slew of obvious benefits), but rather movement in a magical setting. Hiking the iconic Appalachian Trail pairs quad-torching trekking with fresh, alpine air and scenery so splendid it all but promises a spiritual awakening. Now that’s a win for your mind, body and soul. Guess the only thing left to do is decide where to start your expedition. Might we suggest the northernmost jumping-off point, Mount Katahdin in Maine?

relaxing trips in the united states active volcano

6. Visit An Active Volcano (big Island, Hawaii)

Will exploring an active volcano such as Kīlauea on the Big Island, which most recently erupted back in 2018, calm your nerves like an aromatherapy spa treatment or a yoga class might? Probably not. Though, that doesn’t mean the exhilarating experience won’t leave you feeling rejuvenated and uplifted in a way that’s equally significant. After all, doing something thrilling can have a profoundly positive emotional and physical impact on a person. Also, just to assuage any concerns, it’s actually completely safe if you book an organized tour and go with a trained guide.

relaxing trips in the united states redwoods

7. Stand Amongst Redwoods (california)

They say hugging trees is a form of therapy. Why not? We’ve heard of stranger stuff. And, hey, whatever works, right? Jokes aside, just being in the presence of towering, hundred-year-old redwood trees has a wonderfully calming energy that’s hard to put into words, but easy to feel in your soul. Take a deep breath, inhale the earthy aroma and exhale the bullsh*t. We swear you’ll feel better in minutes. Leaving you ample time to actually enjoy the trails and picnic areas in one of California’s best national parks .

relaxing trips in the united states sedona

8. Seek Out Energy Vortexes In Sedona (arizona)

Sedona is a deeply spiritual destination known for its spectacular red-rock formations, epic hiking and energy vortexes. If you’re not familiar with the latter, they’re often described as “swirling centers of energy” that radiate from the earth. The most powerful vortexes (Airport Mesa, Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock and Boynton Canyon) are great spots to meditate, sit alone with your thoughts or connect to Mother Earth. After recharging out in nature, head into town to pick up some healing crystal at one of the New Age shops or hit up a ritzy spa resort for a stress-melting massage.

relaxing trips in the united states sante fe

9. Take A Hot Air Balloon Ride Over Sante Fe

It may sound sort of counterintuitive, but we guarantee standing in the basket of a hot-air balloon , looking down at the expansive Rio Grande Gorge, perhaps even spotting eagles, deer and bighorn sheep, will help you forget about, well, basically anything else that might have been a bother earlier. Ultimately, it’s all about changing your perspective, saying “yes” to new experiences and embracing adventure. And, yes, for some people (thrillseekers and those who thrive at high altitudes, we’re looking at you) that’s totally zenifying—or, at the very least, let’s call it transformative.

relaxing trips in the united states death valley national park

10. Sleep Under The Stars In Death Valley National Park (california)

We all need to unplug every now and again. What better way to disconnect from the pressures of daily life than by snoozing somewhere without access to a smartphone charger and cell reception? Death Valley National Park may be one of the hottest, driest places on the planet but at night is a celestial paradise that’s miles away from light pollution. Instead of counting sheep, lull yourself to sleep by watching heavenly bodies dance through the night sky. Dozing off under the stars assures some restful and rejuvenating winks.

Need a relaxing holiday? Get marooned on an island, or bask in some stunning scenery. Here is our pick of the most relaxing holiday destinations for a truly relaxing break.

Landmannalaugar, Iceland

Ang thong national park, thailand, budapest, hungary, seychelles, west indian ocean, vancouver, canada, bay of islands, new zealand, sacred valley, peru, valladolid, mexico, treasure beach, jamaica — one of the most relaxing holiday destinations, ubud, indonesia, the dordogne, france, bora bora, south pacific ocean, cairngorms national park, scotland, joshua tree national park, usa, kosi bay, south africa, las alpujarras, spain, amsterdam, the netherlands, nong khiaw, laos, caye caulker, belize, torres del paine national park, chile.

The information in this article is inspired by The Rough Guides guidebooks — your essential guides for visiting the world.

The astonishing landscape of Landmannalaugar still feels remarkably off the beaten track in Iceland . Its mountains are streaked in varying shades of orange and brown (and at times, blue and green),

Those that do make it here come for the hiking or – and more appropriate for those in search of the most relaxing holiday destinations – the hot springs . These are about as natural as they come – scalding water emerges from underneath lava to meet a cold water flow, creating the perfect, scenic conditions for a soak.

Though Ko Samui and Ko Pha Ngan have plenty of perfect beaches for even the weariest of travellers, head to nearby Ang Thong National Park for the most relaxing holiday destinations.

This group of 42 small, lush islands boasts the kind of winning combination of sand and rainforest. Whether you dive among the coral reefs, seek out your own pristine bay or spot macaques in the rainforest, you’ll have left the stresses of real life far behind you.

Stately Budapest remains one of the grandest of Europe’s capital cities. The highlight of any visit is undoubtedly the chance to wallow in one of the city’s restorative spas, fed by thermal waters from subterranean springs. The Art Nouveau GellĂ©rt Baths offer an air of exclusivity among its mosaics and stained glass. Meanwhile, the SzĂ©chenyi Baths are the hottest in the city, with outdoor pools and water rapids to add to the experience.

Seychelles is the stuff that tropical-paradise dreams are made of. Ridiculously soft white sand, clear azure waters and a lush interior that’s just waiting for exploration. It’d be hard for even the most stressed-out city dweller to not arrive here and feel themselves instantly relax.

Though the name conjures up images of honeymooners and expensive resorts, it is thankfully possible to stay here on a smaller budget – making paradise a much more affordable possibility.

Cosmopolitan Vancouver , scenically set by the water and ringed by mountains, feels like the best of both worlds. This vibrant, exciting city is within spitting distance of some astounding nature. The city itself has a laid-back vibe that has much in common with the US’s west coast cities. There’s arguably no better place to experience this – whether on the beach or on two wheels – than semi-wild Stanley Park, the city’s green heart.

It’s worth making the stunning Bay of Islands, in the far north of New Zealand , your final stop after indulging in the country’s plethora of adrenaline-filled activities. It is truly one of the best holiday destinations to relax. This subtropical region is best explored from the water. While here, you might get to spot whales, penguins and dolphins. Even the largest island of the bunch – Urupukapuka – remains remarkably tranquil.

North of Cusco, the Sacred Valley stretches out towards Machu Picchu . Here, in the steep-sided valley, you’ll find the evocative Inca ruins of Pisac and Ollantaytambo, in dramatic positions high above the river. Once you’ve spent a few days exploring, head a bit downriver to Urubamba, which is becoming something of a spiritual centre, to relax under the snowy peaks of the Andes.

Soak up some Peruvian culture on this whirlwind tailor-made trip to Peru . See the capital Lima, pretty Cusco and the Sacred Valley before you acclimatise to the high altitude of Machu Picchu, the greatest mountain city on earth and the gateway to the Incan Empire.

There are plenty of places to relax in the Yucatán , but head away from the coast to colourful Valladolid and you’ll discover a much more local side to the region. The greatest pleasure here is in exploring on foot, ducking into little shops as they take your fancy. Or tying the local specialities and cooling off in the wonderful natural cenote (sinkhole) on the edge of town.

YucatĂĄn is calling you, and this tailor-made Mayan Heritage trip is the way to do it. Experience the jungle in a completely new way; enjoy incredible food, beautiful sunsets, and the warmth of its communities.

On an island that’s synonymous with chilling out, Treasure Beach particularly stands out as one of the most relaxing holiday destinations. The beaches are blissfully quiet by Jamaican standards. However, there’s still very much a local heart to the beachside community, which definitely adds to its appeal. This is undoubtedly the place to come to discover the island’s gentler side.

The cultural heart of Bali , Ubud is picturesquely set among paddy fields and remains a magnet for healing treatments and local art and music. Hire a bike and take a leisurely ride out into the lush surrounding countryside before heading back to relieve any aching muscles with a Balinese massage. In the evening, check out a traditional dance show at the atmospheric Ubud Palace.

It’s hard not to be enchanted by the Dordogne as it winds its way past dramatically-sited chñteau and medieval villages. The region is best appreciated at a slow pace —whether floating down the river in a canoe, over the fields in a hot air balloon, or over a leisurely lunch in a sun-dappled square.

Even driving here is a pleasure. It’s hard to beat driving the quiet country roads at dusk as the river glints appealingly beside you.

Let’s be honest, you’re unlikely to head to Bora Bora for anything other than the delights of sun and sea. The ultimate way to do it, if you can afford to, is to stay in an over-water hut, from where the peaceful sunsets and vast expanses of aquamarine water are yours alone to savour.

If it all gets a bit too quiet for your liking, explore the beautiful lagoons by boat, hike into the interior or experience the vibrant underwater life on a diving trip.

The largest national park in the UK, and right in the heart of the Scottish Highlands, the Cairngorms boast the kind of jaw-dropping scenery that’ll impress you even in the worst weather. And if it does turn out to be dreich (dreary), it’s hard to beat cosying up by a fire in a Highland pub with a glass or two of whisky.

This tailor-made trip to Scotland's Wildest Natural Scenery is a breath of fresh air and perfect to explore the most enchanting landscapes of the Highlands. It will allow you to get to know the wildest landscapes of Scotland, its fast-paced history and its amazing traditions.

The silence of the desert is what makes Joshua Tree National Park one of the most relaxing holiday destinations. There’s undoubtedly something otherworldly about the eponymous Joshua Trees (which are in fact yucca rather than trees). The park is at its most magical at dusk when the desert shifts into varying shades of orange, pink and red.

The best way to experience the park is on foot – clambering over giant boulders, hiking down to an oasis, or just finding a shady spot from which to soak up the silence.

Tucked up in the far northeastern corner of South Africa , right by the border with Mozambique, Kosi Bay feels like a bit of an adventure to get to. It is blissfully undiscovered by most other tourists. Hippos wallow in the waters around here, while the bay itself is fabulous for snorkelling. The beautiful stretches of sand are so quiet and secluded that you won’t quite believe your luck.

The hairpin bends that litter the roads through this mountainous part of Andalucía may mean you arrive feeling a little less than relaxed. However, it doesn’t take long to slip into the sleepy rhythms of this beautiful region. Spend your days exploring the quiet white-washed villages , tasting the delicious local jamón, or taking a leisurely ramble along a mountainside path.

Famously laid-back, Amsterdam is not a city to rush through. Join the locals and explore by bike – at a meandering pace, of course – or wander over bridges and quiet side streets to discover the city’s most alluring side for yourself. It feels especially magical in winter when countless cosy bars provide the perfect respite from the chilly northern air.

North of Luang Prabang on the wide Nam Ou River and surrounded by striking limestone karsts is the village of Nong Khiaw. It is one of the most relaxing holiday destinations in Laos . While there are plenty of activities on offer in the surrounding countryside, it’s really about the simple pleasures here. Chill out in your riverside hammock, ideally with a cold Beer Lao in hand, as the sun sinks below the horizon.

One of Southeast Asia’s lesser-travelled countries, Laos is definitely off the beaten track. Itt has retained its culture, charm and traditional village life, wild jungle and stunning countryside. On this tailor-made trip to Historical Laos , you'll find tradition and mystery and a unique adventure.

Caye Caulker more than lives up to its motto of 'Go Slow', and at just 35km northeast of Belize City it makes for one of the most relaxing holiday destinations. Best of all, at affordable prices.

This relaxed and easy-going island is only just over 8km long. The big appeal here, in addition to the gorgeous white-sand beaches, is the abundance of opportunities that the reef – 1.5km offshore – provides, not least snorkelling among the coral canyons.

Take this tailor-made family-friendly adventure through Guatemala and Belize . Discover Lake Atitlan on kayaks, explore the active volcano Pacaya or play hide and seek in the large archaeological complex of Tikal before heading out to Belize for its fantastic underwater world and beaches.

It’s not hard to be blown away by the majestic landscape of the Torres del Paine National Park in Chilean Patagonia. The centrepiece is undoubtedly the immense Paine Massif. Of which the Torres del Paine themselves usually steal the show as they tower over the almost too-reflective-to-seem-real waters of Lago Nordenskjöld.

The vast expanse of Patagonia is home to extreme landscapes, from jagged mountains, stark glaciers, clear blue lakes, and grassy fields. You will find them all in Torres del Paine, a huge contrast to the start of this tailor-made trip to Chile in the historical, bustling city of Santiago.

Solo Vacations: The 29 Best Places to Travel Alone in the U.S.

These destinations make traveling solo easy — and extra fun.

Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

travel for relax

Stephanie Granada is a writer and editor focusing on travel, beauty, home, and health. Her bylines have appeared in Sunset , Outside , Southern Living , Woman's Day , Brit + Co. , National Geographic Traveler , and others.

Traveling alone is all about freedom and independence — freedom to go where you want, when you want, and independence in your ability to visit new places and meet new people without the crutch of a travel companion. It's not for everyone, but those willing to venture off on their own are rewarded with a compromise-free vacation and unforgettable experiences. Exciting things just seem to happen when you're traveling solo.

But where to go? If you're just testing the waters of solo travel, you might want to stay close to home, which is where these U.S. destinations come in handy. Whether you dream of a spa vacation with plenty of time to relax and reset, a trip packed with activities, or a soul-searching expedition, these U.S. destinations cater to the solo traveler, thanks to their ease of transportation and large selection of things to do.

Ready to book your next solo trip? Read on for the best places to travel alone in the U.S.

Naples, Florida

If you have your heart set on a beach vacation, consider Naples, a relatively small community in southwest Florida. There are plenty of ways a solo beach traveler can occupy themselves in Naples. You can check out the beach at Naples Pier, go kayaking in the mangroves , or hit the links at one of the area's 90+ golf courses. If you're looking for an activity that will leave a big grin on your face, book a dolphin watching cruise from Marco Island , just 30 minutes south of Naples. Plus, the city was ranked number one in a recent list of safest places to live the U.S. , thanks to its low crime rates.

Boston, Massachusetts

Boston may be a big city, but it can often feel like a small town. Thanks to its walkability, you'll be able to explore the city's historic center on foot and can take the T, the local subway system, across the Charles River to Cambridge. In Boston, you'll find a wellspring of history and culture in museums like the fun Boston Tea Party Museum and the impressive Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum , the site of one of the world's most famous art heists.

Boulder, Colorado

Those looking for quiet solo travel in the U.S. can spend their days exploring the mountains and hills surrounding Boulder. Eldorado Canyon State Park is just 20 minutes south of downtown, the approximately two-mile trail up Flagstaff Mountain is just 15 minutes to the west, and the iconic Flatirons (red sandstone formations) are less than 10 minutes away by car. And If you're feeling social, head to Pearl Street Mall , a bustling pedestrian-only street with some of the city's best restaurants, shops, and bars.

Portland, Oregon

Not everyone feels comfortable eating out at a restaurant alone, especially when traveling solo, but Portland makes mealtime a nonissue, thanks to its bustling food cart scene. There are many food cart parks scattered about the city where you can go and peruse a diverse offering of cuisine, from pizza to Senegalese, and enjoy your meal in a atmospheric and fun shared space. Food aside, Portland's reliable transportation, great parks, and community vibe make this city an easy choice for people traveling alone. Between the good meals, you can also enjoy the tranquility of the Japanese Garden or browse the shelves at the famous Powell's Books .

Asheville, North Carolina

Pierre Leclerc Photography/Getty Images

If your perfect vacation includes hiking and biking during the day and gulping down beers with new friends at night, there's arguably no better place than Asheville, a city situated in North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains. Bikers will want to tackle the Blue Ridge Parkway , while hikers can head to the Craggy Pinnacle Trail (an approximately one-mile hike with serious views) or climb Mount Pisgah (2.6 miles round-trip). After a day in the mountains, reward yourself with a beer on the pup-friendly patio at Wicked Weed Brewing .

Sedona, Arizona

Traveling solo may be the only time you're able to truly check out from the grind and relax. That's why spa destinations like Sedona are so perfect for solo travelers. In addition to beautiful scenery, Sedona is packed with spas and wellness offerings. For a full resort experience, book a stay at the Amara Resort and Spa , or test out a few of the city's plentiful day spas: A Spa for You and Sedona's New Day Spa are long-standing favorites.

Charleston, South Carolina

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Art lovers will find themselves in their element in this colorful coastal city in South Carolina. The small city of Charleston is home to over 35 fine art galleries and hosts an Art Walk on the first Friday of every month. If you're hoping to make some art yourself, the French Quarter is sure to inspire, while the city's warm southern hospitality will make you feel right at home. If the temperature is right, you can even take a trip out to Isle of Palms to enjoy some quality time on the beach.

Nashville, Tennessee

If your idea of a dream solo trip is getting out and meeting new people, book a ticket to Nashville and let the city of music connect you to others. The Basement , a live music venue known for its cozy vibes and spacious patio, is a must, as is 3rd and Lindsley . Just don't leave the city without trying the spicy fried chicken at Hattie B's . A trip to Nashville is also a chance to try out one of its best hotels like the classic Hermitage Hotel.

Portland, Maine

This may be the second Portland on the list, but this one has a coastal advantage. From the seaside city you can hop on a ferry or boat charter, or eat your way through the city's best lobster rolls at Luke's Lobster . When you're not out enjoying the water or stuffing your face with deliciously fresh seafood, you can meander in and out of the shops and boutiques at the historic Old Port.

San Francisco, California

When you're traveling solo, public transportation is key (no one wants to foot the bill for a weekend full of Uber rides). That's where cities like San Francisco shine. Between Muni buses, trains, streetcars, and cable cars, you can get to every corner of the city without hopping in a cab. Surrounded by beautiful bay views and offering easy access to experience a Redwood forest in Muir Woods , there are plenty of things to do in and around San Francisco.

Bayfield, Wisconsin

Located on the shores of Lake Superior, and home to quaint B&Bs and beautiful Victorian homes, Bayfield is a warm and welcoming coastal destination and one of the loveliest small towns in the U.S. Solo travelers can roam the intimate downtown or head to the nearby Apostle Islands National Lakeshore , best known for its series of caves that freeze during the winter months.

Carmel-by-the-Sea, California

Just off California's iconic Highway 1 is Carmel-by-the-Sea, a small beach city on the Monterey Peninsula that will capture your heart the moment you see it. Traveling solo is no problem here, as the city offers plenty to do — surfing, sea animals, and a village-style center that feels like it belongs in a storybook. However, solo travelers may feel most at ease exploring the many art galleries like the Carmel Art Association and Bennett Sculpture .

Boise, Idaho

Boise is a paradise for lovers of the outdoors. Solo travelers will find riverside walking and biking trails that run right through town, skiing (in the winter) and hiking (in the summer) at the city's Bogus Basin Mountain Recreation Area , and easy access to mountain towns like McCall and ski areas like the rapidly growing Tamarack Resort .

Savannah, Georgia

 Marje/ Getty Images

Savannah's welcoming nature makes solo travel a breeze. If you're feeling social, join a haunted pub crawl through town or book an architectural tour . And if you're looking for a quiet escape, rent a bike and explore the history-rich city on two wheels. The best time to visit Savannah is in the fall and winter, when the temperatures are cooler and you can embrace the spooky spirit during Halloween when the city goes all out with on-theme activities .

Hot Springs, Arkansas

As you might guess, Hot Springs, Arkansas, is known for its natural hot springs, which have drawn visitors since the early 1900s. For solo travelers, there's nothing like a serene soak in the natural thermal waters found on the historic Bathhouse Row, followed by a refreshing drink of spring water and a lazy hike through the dense woods at Hot Springs National Park . In addition to the gorgeous scenery of the park, you can also discover it's unique history as a wellness destination .

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Jackson Hole may be home to a world-renowned ski area , mouthwatering cuisine, and high-end galleries, but you'll still find Old West-style bars where cowboys throw back PBRs (check out the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar ). It's the perfect place to throw on a Stetson and dress the part for a night or two. The town itself offers plenty to do when you're not drinking or skiing, like rodeo nights at the Jackson Hole Rodeo and incredible pastries at the James Beard-recognized Persephone Bakery .

Seattle, Washington

Gautier Houba/Travel + Leisure

If you want access to nature without sacrificing big-city amenities, Seattle offers an ideal balance. Spend a couple of days checking out Pike Place Market (don't miss a cup of mac n' cheese from Beecher's ), going to the top of the Space Needle , and visiting the Museum of Pop Culture before hopping aboard a ferry and getting away from it all. From the heart of Seattle, you can take a boat across Elliott Bay to Bainbridge Island and onto Olympic National Park , home to both glacier-capped mountains and 70 miles of wild coastline.

Minneapolis, Minnesota

It's been said that one can hardly be called an architect if they haven't designed something in Minneapolis — the city showcases work from Jean Nouvel, Herzog & de Meuron, CĂ©sar Pelli, and Frank Gehry, among others. The city's love of design is also noticeable in the hotel scene, where sophistication meets Midwestern hospitality. So, while it's perfectly acceptable to wander through the city looking up, you don't want to miss a cruise on one of the famous bike paths, which wind past lakes that are perfect for a dip in the summertime.

Salt Lake City, Utah

It may be Utah's largest city, but Salt Lake City doesn't feel like a giant metropolis. Maybe it's the fact that it's surrounded by mountains or the open expanse of the Great Salt Lake and Antelope Island State Park to the west. Either way, this friendly city has everything a solo traveler could want — great food (check out Feldman's Deli ), plenty of sun-drenched days, and easy access to both the mountains and water. Among the many things to do in town, you will also have your pick of exciting day trips to nearby state parks, or you can use the city as a launchpad to explore Utah's stunning geology at national parks like Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon .

Fort Collins, Colorado

dlewis33/E+/Getty Images

If you're a beer lover, head to Fort Collins, a Colorado town with plenty of heart and really good beer. Start your tour of the city in the taproom of New Belgium Brewing (the company behind Fat Tire) and follow it with a pint at a few lesser-known breweries — we recommend Zwei Brewing Co. , Maxline Brewing , and Black Bottle Brewery . By the end of the day, you'll have your own beer-loving posse to explore the city with. Solo travelers will love the atmosphere of the downtown area, which is so charming it was the inspiration for Walt Disney when designing Main Street, U.S.A. at Disneyland.

Austin, Texas

The quickest way to bond with a stranger? Shared musical taste. Austin has plenty of opportunities to bump into fellow music lovers. Stay on or near South Congress Avenue, where trendy properties like the Hotel Magdalena provide the ideal base for visiting the street's iconic venues. Other ‘hoods you can easily get to include East Austin, booming with hipster bars and food trucks; South Lamar with its great shops; and Rainey Street, beloved among college students. Visit March through November to see the bats flying under the Ann W. Richards bridge — it's one of the best things to do in Austin , as is indulging in the city's incredible food.

Islamorada, Florida

Of all the towns in the Florida Keys , Islamorada has the homiest feel. Locals are happy to regale you with tales of family squabbles and fishing exploits at any of the seaside watering holes. For an elevated dining experience, snag a barstool at Chef Michael’s and order the whole lionfish. It's a big but manageable dish, made from an invasive species that Floridians pride themselves on removing from local waters and serving as a tasty dinner instead. When you're done, rest your head at one of the cozy cottages at Moorings Village.

Louisville, Kentucky

Kentucky is known for its hospitality and Louisville for its bourbon , meaning solo travelers can find good friends and good drinks while exploring this Southern city. NuLu is the most happening neighborhood, but Old Louisville is the place to hunker down if you’re a sucker for history and architecture. Downtown offers new hotels and inventive restaurants, while Butchertown and Germantown pair up-and-coming bars and businesses with impressive vintage architecture.

Marfa, Texas

Artists in search of a solitary life have been drawn to Marfa for decades. Today, the population hovers just under 2,000, but there’s enough art, food, and quirk for a city many times that size. El Cosmico offers outstanding glamping and communal spaces, while art houses like the Chinati Foundation keep visitors entertained. Though it's more than three hours from the closest airport, this flatland village offers progressive galleries, mystifying desert skies, and a sparse beauty that makes it one of the best small towns in Texas .

New York, New York

New York City might be full of crowds, but it’s also a welcoming hub for parties of one. There are sleek hotels with bars that draw worldly travelers and locals, some of the best art and shopping in the world, and more food and drink options than you can fit into a month-long trip. If you need help deciding what to do on your visit, take a look at our three-day weekend guide .

Portsmouth, New Hampshire

New Hampshire is one of the safest states in the country — and solo travelers wanting to enjoy that security will find a great home base in Portsmouth. This waterfront town is one of the state's most pedestrian-friendly communities, and with a colonial heritage that dates back to the 1600s, it's fantastic for history buffs. Portsmouth knows its food, as is perhaps best showcased in the dozen oyster farms active offshore in the Great Bay. Sample their best bivalves at The Franklin, an upscale seafood joint run by James Beard-nominated chef Matt Louis.

San Diego, California

San Diego combines the laid-back vibes of SoCal with the multicultural energy of a city located right on the Mexican border. From mild weather and great surfing to vibrant West Coast sunsets, it has lots to offer, making it a great place to spend a few days. Opportunities for hiking and watersports abound, while coastal areas like La Jolla and Del Mar offer a bevy of chic hotels where a solo traveler can catch some oceanside R&R.

Santa Fe, New Mexico

Solo travelers in search of spiritual healing should look no further than Santa Fe . Book a night at Ten Thousand Waves, an upscale lodge inspired by Japanese hot spring resorts and decked out with secluded soaking tubs. Downtown, you’ll find historical landmarks, handmade tchotchkes, and restaurants serving delectable Southwestern food. Beyond the adobe architecture and unique attractions, the best thing you can do in Santa Fe is meet its colorful characters.

Washington, D.C.

Museums are best explored alone, and in Washington, D.C. , you have more than 20 to choose from—many of which are free. The District also has a hot food scene, and as a solo diner, you'll have the best shot at getting into the most highly coveted spots. To get far away from D.C.’s political crowds, head to a hip residential neighborhood like Shaw, where you can imbibe at Maxwell Park Wine Bar or catch a show at the Howard Theatre.

2. Tulum, Mexico: Where the beaches are paradise

With one of its major attractions known as Playa Paraiso (Paradise Beach), it's little wonder that Tulum on the Caribbean Coast of Mexico makes it on to our list of the world's most relaxing places.

Playa Paraiso is a secluded, palm-fringed expanse of white sands that remains relatively quiet and relaxed despite its abundant beauty and calm, crystal clear waters. Here you can spend your days swimming and snorkeling, before savoring cool drinks and authentic Mexican dishes at the local beach bars and restaurants.

Take a look at Insight Guides The Magic of the Yucatan and Mexico City trip and explore the real Yucatan Peninsula from archaeological sites to the beaches of Tulum. Then change the vibe completely in Mexico's vivid capital city.

3. Phuket, Thailand: The perfect place to unwind

Phuket is easily one of the hottest locations in Thailand , drawing in endless visitors with its sparkling beaches and laid-back atmosphere. But that doesn't mean it isn't also one of the most relaxing holiday destinations to visit. In fact, Phuket can be the perfect place to unwind.

The northernmost reaches of the island’s western coastline encompass the extensive stretch of Hat Mai Khao beach, which is part of the protected Sirinat National Park . Its secluded location makes it one of the island’s quietest, with golden sands and very clean waters.

8. Galle, Sri Lanka: Relax in historic luxury

The city of Galle on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka is perfect for the traveler looking for a little luxury and a spot of relaxation.

One of Asia’s most perfectly preserved period pieces, colonial Galle Fort dates back to the city's period of rule under the Dutch, who seized Galle from the Portuguese in 1640 and spent the next 150 years embellishing and fortifying the town.

The Dutch influence remains apparent in the streets of low-slung colonial villas, many of which now house delightful boutiques. So the town makes a wonderful destination for shopping and leisurely strolls. Discover Galle's charms for yourself as part of Insight Guides Deluxe Sri Lanka trip.

Along with fantastic designer shopping and buzzing nightlife for all orientations, the island also offers some of the most luxurious accommodation in the Greek islands .

However, Mýkonos is also a destination where you can fully unwind. On the north coast, Agios Sostis and Panormos are undeveloped, sheltered sandy beaches where you can relish idyllic peace and quiet. These wonderfully isolated specks of land are known for exceptional snorkeling and diving, thanks to the exotic marine life and sparkling, clear lagoons. Lakshadweep isn't the easiest destination to reach, which of course only makes it that much more alluring.

Need to Relax? 27 of the Best Solo Beach Vacation Destinations

Avatar

November 30, 2023 by Tracey Nesbitt

aerial shot of a secluded beach, ideal for a solo beach vacation

Are you on the hunt for a relaxing solo beach vacation destination, one that offers the calming benefits of being near a body of water?

You've come to the right place.

Not only do we have lots of recommendations for you, but every single one of them was contributed by a solo traveler who went there and enjoyed time alone on or near the water.

Humans are hardwired to relax near water. At least, that's what Wallace J. Nichols writes in Blue Mind: The Surprising Science That Shows How Being Near, In, On, or Under Water Can Make You Happier, Healthier, More Connected, and Better at What You Do. He says,

We are inspired by water—hearing it, smelling it in the air, playing in it, walking next to it, painting it, surfing, swimming or fishing in it, writing about it, photographing it, and creating lasting memories along its edge. Indeed, throughout history, you see our deep connection to water described in art, literature, and poetry
We know instinctively that being by water makes us healthier, happier, reduces stress, and brings us peace.

I feel the truth of this in my bones. I grew up on a lake, spent the summers of my childhood on a boat or at a cottage on another lake, and have spent much of my adult life living a block from yet another lake. I sleep like a baby when I can hear the waves. When I'm stressed, I head to the beach to breathe the air, feel the wind on my face, and stare at the horizon. When I travel, there's nothing better to me than accommodations that overlook bodies of water, whether the climate lends itself to jumping in or not.

I'm taking an expansive view of what constitutes a solo beach vacation. It doesn't only mean the type of holiday where you lay on the beach all day–not that there's anything wrong with that! In fact, if that's your preference, check out this popular post to help you prepare: Going to the Beach Alone: How to Manage Your Stuff, Relax & Enjoy . But as Nichols suggests, just being near water has tremendous health and mental health benefits.

Water destinations are some of the best places to travel alone, relax, and find a happier you.

Emily recommends Cape Town, South Africa .

Cape Town has it all: beaches, mountains, harbors, gardens, adventure trips, wildlife, vineyards and wine, amazing food, culture, history, gorgeous weather, and amazing nightlife. There are a wide variety of beaches to visit, from Boulders Beach in Simon's Town where tons of penguins run around frolicking, to the gorgeous Camps Bay Beach where sunsets will take your breath away while the Twelve Apostles mountains look on. Noordhoek Beach is a great place to go horseback riding along the water and Muizenberg Beach has sand, surf, and possible shark spotting!

people swimming on Sal Island

Tracy recommends Sal Island, Cape Verde .

Sal Island has some beautiful beaches. I loved to watch the sun go down at Melias Dunas beach. Entertainment was also laid on at sundown, such as a classic violinist, or there were fitness classes. I took part in a zumba class on the beach, run by energetic locals. The weather is around 26 degrees in January but still windy. I wore sunfactor fifty but still got red due to the strong sun. An island tour is a must if you wish to see more of the island. There are many to choose from, from your hotel or locally in Santa Maria or from registered sellers on the beach. Cape Verde runs on its own time and there is no rush anywhere you go. Do not expect quick service like you may experience at home. It all adds to the Cape Verdean charm. My favorite place on the island tour was the Blue Eye or Buracona (large hole). It has a collapsed cave which has an opening to the sea and a second opening to the surface, right off the shore. The opening allows sunlight to fall on the sea water and light it with a deep blue color. Midday is the best time to go as the sun is at its highest. There are pools you can bathe in. I would not recommend taking flips flops as the ground is rocky and uneven.  Pedra de Lume is situated on high ground and it is a salt lake inside the mouth of a long-extinct volcano. My skin felt invigorated after a soak in the salt lakes and got rid of some hard skin on my feet. There is plenty to do for adventurers from surfing the waves to hiring a quad bike to tour the island to flying a kite on Kite Beach. You will also benefit from much rest if you prefer a quieter life by taking it easy on the array of gorgeous beaches and sampling the laid back Cape Verdean way of life.

eastern cape's hole in the wall, a great solo beach destination

Emily also recommends Eastern Cape in South Africa, which is her home province, so she knows it very well.

Visiting our beaches is an absolute fun experience, as the beaches are normally fairly empty, pets are allowed, and the water is warm, as a result of the warm Agulhas current in the Indian Ocean. If you're lucky, you'll see some happy cows splashing around in the waves. Sugar cane plantations can usually be found around our beaches, and munching on these sticks of sugar cane is a childhood treat that I still enjoy to this day. Credit goes to Iven Scharein for the Hole in the Wall photo, he did justice to the beauty that is part of our Wild Coast! For the surfers out there, our beaches have the waves: Plettenburg Bay, Jeffries Bay, St Francis Bay
 the list goes on!

boats on the Bosphorous in Istanbul

Alison recommends Istanbul, Turkey .

Istanbul is fascinating, culturally and historically, and an absolute visual feast. One of the world's great waterfront cities, it has the Bosphorous, the Golden Horn & the Sea of Marmara on three sides. There is great shopping, a plethora of historical sites, a rich live music & night club culture, and wonderful food. You can tour palaces and museums – Hagia Sophia (once a church, then a mosque, now a museum), the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace – and get a glimpse into the opulent life of the Ottoman Empire. Cruise up the Bosphorus to the Black Sea or out into the Sea of Marmara to the Princes Islands. The Roman mosaic museum and the nearby Rasta Bazaar are full of beautiful silks, embroideries, leather goods, and carpets, carpets, carpets! Check out Kumkapi for freshly caught seafood, Haci Abdullah for classic Ottoman dishes, or take a ferry ride to the Eastern side for fabulous regional foods at Ciya. Visit Yanothererebatan cistern or the hamam for a turkish steam bath and a good scrub down and massage. If you have more time to spare head to Cappadocia for a balloon flight, or the Turquoise coast for a gulet cruise.

kayaks in ha long bay, a recommended solo beach vacation destination

Lia recommends getting out on the water for a boat cruise in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam .

When in Vietnam, you cannot miss a visit to Ha Long Bay, a  UNESCO World Heritage Site , famous for its spectacular sea of limestones. The best way to see the bay is by a traditional junk boat cruise. You can either go for a full day, or book multiple days spending the nights onboard. I recommend taking at least a 2-day, 1-night cruise if you have time, as Ha Long Bay is a 4-hour drive from the capital city of Hanoi, and it can get exhausting. Once onboard your journey will begin with a view of the amazing scenery of the sea of limestones. You'll have Vietnamese lunch served on the boat, just before stopping for a kayak or bamboo boat cruise around some of the limestones and caves. The widest cave in Ha Long Bay is the Cave of Surprises (Sung Sot Cave), located on Bo Hon Island, an array of linked limestone islets. Upon arrival, climb the hundred stone steps to the mouth of the cave, explore its paths inside, and admire the hanging stalactites. You will have time for some sunbathing and swimming as well before returning to the boat in time to get ready for dinner. I promise you a sunset to remember, with all those thousands of limestone peaks rising from the emerald waters of the ocean. An unforgettable view, indeed. Wake up early in the morning for a Tai Chi class on the boat, and catch the sunrise over the bay. There is much more to do and see in Ha Long Bay, including Cat Ba, the largest island in Halong Bay, Quan Lan Island, Bai Tu Long Bay, as well as hiking or kayaking the tranquil lake at Ba Be National Park.

swings over the water at twilight in gili air

Madhurima says that Gili Air, Indonesia is the little tropical escape we are all looking for.

The uncountable beach cafes and restaurants offer great food and an extremely chilled vibe that draws visitors from all around the world. My favorite part of the day was just strolling on the beaches then sitting in some area where I was the only living soul. The evening was spent sipping a mocktail from a mini beach hut as the sun slowly made its way behind the hills and the clear green water reflected its rays. I spent nearly 4 hours reading a book in one of these mini huts – an experience I will never forget. The island is also famous for its coral life. So, take a dive or snorkel trip in the morning, gorge on delicious meals in the afternoon, and then laze away at the sunset point in the evening–that would be my tip for a perfect day! You don't have to break the bank to find a tropical paradise, it can be done within a budget and in Asia!

beach at Maafushi Kaafu Atoll, Maldives, taken by a solo traveler on a beach vacation

Leah recommends Maldives .

Maldives is known to be one of the best honeymoon destinations to celebrate love, but Leah says it was her dream come true solo beach vacation destination.

Maldives is a tropical paradise with plenty of sunshine and temperatures around 30°C throughout the year. It is more than just palm trees, turquoise reefs, sun-kissed white sand beaches, and deep blue seas. The country is made up of 1,190 coral islands, and 99% of the Maldives is made up of sea. There are about 200 inhabited islands. About 105 islands are developed as tourist resorts and the rest are uninhabited or used for agriculture and other livelihood purposes. Excursions like Virgin Island hopping, night fishing, and local island hopping are must-try activities. Hotels in Maldives arrange daily excursions or day trips to other sand beaches, picnic islands, or resorts. For those who are snorkeling enthusiasts like me, I would recommend the full day island hop & snorkel activity at a cheaper price. My favorite activity is the drift scuba diving. The best part of it is that I don't have to be a professional diver to enjoy it. The dive center gave me basic to advanced training using well-monitored diving facilities of a high standard. Even the most reluctant diver can enjoy the beauty of Maldivian underwater life on a drift dive with the guidance of experienced instructors. Aside from sightseeing and food tripping, there were a lot of activities in Maldives that I didn't get the chance to try due to time constraints. You can experience submarine rides, whale watching, stingray feeding, and dolphin watching.

Chen-Chi recommends this trip she took to Hallstatt and Gosausee in Upper Austria.

Hallstatt, sometimes called “The Real Paradise on Earth,” is a lovely village located on the shore of HallstĂ€tter See (a lake in the Alps) in Upper Austria. Like most parts of this country, it’s very safe for solo travelers. I went to this little paradise from Salzburg by bus in mid-September, a season with rain from time to time, but fewer tourists.  During my stay in Hallstatt, I spent one day in Gosausee. I took a bus and transferred at GosaumĂŒhle. Within one hour, I was transported to another dreamlike location. I had my lunch at the only restaurant in Gosausee and walked around the lake, which was an easy hike, about 1.5 to 2 hours. The water was crystal clear, with a stunning view of Dachstein mountain and glacier in the background. I enjoyed the freshness and tranquility, and watched the lake change from misty to shiny.

Kay created an itinerary to visit as many fjords as possible before reaching the hauntingly beautiful Lofoten Islands in Norway. You can read about her trip in Solo Travel Destination: Lofoten Islands, Norway .

“ Stresa, Italy is my ‘go-to' de-stress destination after a long journey of solo touring,” says Sandra. “Stresa energizes the shores of Lago Maggiore and there are beautiful views in all directions from the picturesque Borromean Islands dotting the shoreline to the Italian Alps as a backdrop. Ferries offer convenient shuttle service to each of the three islands and beyond. Catherine fell in love with Santander, Spain .

Santander is a place that truly has something for everyone. For those who love to soak up the sun, the city has wonderful beaches that don’t seem to be as crowded as those popular destinations elsewhere in Spain. You can grab a spot on the sand or snag a wooden lawn chair just off the promenade. Another option for a beachy day out is to hop on one of the small ferries which take passengers over to the Playa del Puntal where you can enjoy pinchos and a drink at the Chiringuito El Puntal and take in sweeping views of the city. I love knowing that the beach is there. I love the fresh air and sitting down for a meal overlooking the water. However, I have no interest in spending all day sitting on a beach. For those like me, who love exploring a city, taking photographs, visiting museums, and practicing Spanish with locals at a bar, Santander also offers lots of options.

Looking to let your hair down, take a dip in turquoise waters, enjoy a picturesque setting? Geetika says Mallorca is the place for you.

“Enjoying the crystal-clear waters is one of the favorite activities for visitors. Whether sunbathing on the beach, taking a refreshing dip in the sea, or witnessing the exotic wildlife is your interest, Mallorca has a lot to offer. You could spend weeks in this city alone, and still uncover fresh joys every day.”

isle of skye, sunset, water destinations

It is not only possible but also enjoyable to explore the spectacular landscapes and coast of Scotland’s Isle of Skye without renting a car. Janice shares how she did so in The Spectacular Isle of Skye Without a Car .

Su recommends a road trip on the North Coast 500 to anyone who loves nature and remote places with a bit of a rough spirit. She says, “On the way to Lochinver I took walks on beaches, which you wouldn't expect in northern Scotland. Crystal blue waters, white sand – sometimes I thought I was in the Caribbean. Amazing! I always planned to have enough time to get out of the car and go for long walks or hikes, often along the coastline, enjoying the wind and fresh air coming in from the sea. You can read more about her solo trip in North Coast 500 Road Trip, Scotland .

hopkins, belize, beach chairs, relaxing places to travel alone

Solo Beach Vacation Destinations in the Americas

Central america.

Gemma recommends soaking up the laid-back vibe of Hopkins, Belize . A perfect place to enjoy the beach, nature, and the local culture.

Hopkins is a small, friendly, seaside town. The local lagoon is a beautiful place to go kayaking, meandering down mangrove tunnels, keeping your eyes peeled for sunbathing crocodiles. Visit at night to see the magic of bioluminescence, take a night time dip, and glow in the cool waters. Visit the Mayflower Reserve to do some short hikes, swim in the natural pools to cool off, and, if you're lucky, have a free fish foot spa (it's a scratchy, tickly feeling). Or, if you prefer something a bit cooler, take a tour to St. Herman's Cave and try out cave tubing, which is by the far the best way to explore underground caverns. With so many activities available, you won't be bored but Hopkins is also a good place to do nothing, head to the beach with a good book, or just chill out in a hammock. It's easy to see why so many people stay here longer than intended; it's a great place to recuperate and get away from the more touristy side of Belize.

la fortuna, waterfall, costa rica, relaxing places to travel alone

Heather describes Puerto Viejo , Costa Rica as “a place to chill, relax, and find yourself again-a place that will stay in your soul.”

She says, “There is plenty to do, like swim or snorkel the blue waters of the reefs, visit the local animal sanctuaries, volunteer to help at the schools or organizations for the indigenous people, take a hike to a jungle waterfall, float the rio (river) border to Panama, or my favorite, snuggle in a hammock listening to the rain hit the canopy above and swinging to the rhythm of the waves.”

Jessica recommends La Fortuna and especially the La Fortuna Waterfall. “The 70m high waterfall leads into a shallow swimming hole filled with green-blue waters that is safe for swimming. Being able to swim in such close proximity to natural untouched beauty and feel the great strengths of the cascading water is an unforgettably surreal experience.”

Dover Beach, Barbados, highly recommended for a solo beach vacation

Solo Beach Vacation Destinations in North America

Joanne spent Christmas on a solo beach vacation in Barbados , snorkeling, swimming with sea turtles, and relaxing on the beach. You can read more about her holiday here: Solo Travel Destination: Barbados .

Lisa recommends Negril, Jamaica .

Negril or Seven Mile Beach is a beautiful stretch of white Caribbean sand, dotted with stalls, resorts, and cafes. By day I soaked up the sun, bought some locally made beaded jewelry (great gifts to take home) and sipped fresh fruit punch – white Jamaican rum optional! This was followed by viewing the peach and pink hues of a Jamaican sunset. I also stayed one night in a cozy Georgian-style guest house in Port Antonio, chilled on a deserted surf beach at nearby Long Bay, and took a boat ride and swim in the Blue Lagoon (yes, where the famous movie was shot).

Bermuda is visually stunning. I couldn't stop staring at the water, which ranges from aquamarine to sapphire, or the pastel painted buildings in various shades of pink, yellow, blue, and green. Topped with blindingly white roofs, set against impossibly clear blue skies, surrounded by lush greenery, and dotted with pink sand beaches, Bermuda's palette is captivating.

water, rocks, and trees in Georgian Bay

A solo summer road trip to Killarney, Ontario in Canada is a beautiful thing, from the scenic drive there and back to cruising on Georgian Bay to dining on fresh local food. If, like me, you have trouble tearing yourself away from technology, you might benefit from a resort that deliberately provides no phones, television, alarm clocks or Wi-Fi in their rooms.

The highlight of my summer road trip to Killarney–and any trip to Georgian Bay, I would say–is getting out on the water. It is a gorgeous part of the world. This was when I finally relaxed. I could have stayed on that boat all day, breathing in beautifully fresh air, staring at the landscape, feeling the contrast of the hot sun against the spray of cold water on my face, swaying with the movement of the boat as it cut through the waves, chatting with my fellow passengers about our travel experiences. Alas, it had to end at some point. But those two hours made the 14 hours of driving there and back entirely worthwhile.

You can read about the rest of my trip in A Solo Summer Road Trip to Killarney .

a photo of a sailboat in the florida keys taken on a solo beach vacation

Do you really need a reason other than warm salt water and hot sun to visit the Florida Keys ?

Spending time snorkeling and swimming, fishing and sailing seems imperative to a visit to the keys. The salt air fills your lungs and clings to your skin in an almost transformative manner. The sea and the mangroves are wild and beautiful and are not to be missed. The most tranquil moment you can have is on a quiet kayak tour through a mangrove forest. Here you can spot herons and tree crabs crawling along the roots of these mystical salt-trees and escape the busy nature of the shore. They hold paddle board yoga classes in the mangroves and I can hardly imagine anything more peaceful. Grace

You can read more about her trip here: Solo Travel Destination: Florida Keys, USA .

Ellie recommends finding accommodation close to the beach in Jacksonville, Florida “so you can wake up every morning to that saltwater air smell. There is nothing like the stunning vista of the ocean to get your day started. Next, spend some time just enjoying the sunshine and the 22 miles of beaches the city has to offer. Read a book, relax, and sprawl out because chances are you won't be fighting for a spot to lie down.”

South America

Jenell loved her solo trip to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil .

Copacabana Beach, a popular image brought to you by movies and documentaries about Brazil, is a stretch of 4 kilometers offering you a view of Copacabana Fort on the right and of the famed Sugarloaf Mountain on the left. All along the sand there are kiosks where beach chair rentals are available and they also sell fruit drinks, water, soda, beer, and margaritas!  Bringing your own chair and blankets to lay on is perfectly acceptable as the entire beach is public.

Table of Contents

What are the Best Relaxation Destinations in the USA?

If getting as far away from life as possible while enjoying a calm, quiet atmosphere is your goal, you know that some places are better than others to achieve that goal.

For example, Bourbon Street in New Orleans is probably not the best idea if you’re looking for peace and solace.

Where are some of the best places to relax and most relaxing vacation destinations to visit in the United States?

The Hawaiian Islands

Some call the tropical islands paradise, which isn’t too far from the truth for many people. Sprawling beaches of snow-white sand, gemstone-colored water, and palm trees swaying in a warm breeze.

Napali Kauai - Best Relaxing Destinations in USA napali-3308391_960_720

The most recent state to join the United States, this beautiful setting is also a well-known tourist destination.

The Hawaiian Islands are a great relaxation destination. What better backdrop to calm down and ease the tension than the sunset over the Pacific?

Thanks to its reputation as a tourist hub, there are also many spa services available to you if the beach isn’t relaxing enough on its own.

There are so many ways to take advantage of these services — from pedicures to facials to massages — that if you chose to, you could spend your whole vacation in a puddle of relaxation at the hotel spa.

Hawai and a series of other US destinations are ideal for couples’ weekends , too.

The Olympic Coast in Washington State

If shaggy pine trees, pebbly beaches, and cold, misty mornings are your idea of perfect solace, head to the northwest corner of the United States and see what you’ve been missing in natural beauty and fantastic hiking opportunities .

Olympic Coast - Best Relaxing Destinations in USA ruby-62191_960_720

Cabins are available for rental, but camping is usually the preferred sleeping arrangement for the adventurous.

The Olympic Coast is a perfect relaxation destination.

The pitter-patter of rain on the roof is a soothing lullaby at night, and when you reach the Spot on the beach with the mist coming off of the ocean and the gulls flying in the background, you realize that you’re witnessing Heaven on Earth.

The Pacific Northwest’s breathtaking scenery is one of the most calming, peaceful places to meditate or practice a yoga routine.

Read this post for the top places to ride a bike (the Pacific coast is included).

There is no wrong way to meditate on top of a misty mountainside; rest assured!

Napa Valley Vineyards in California

If you’re a bit of a confessed wine snob and want to do nothing but chill out and drink some decent wine, then Napa Valley is the perfect destination for you. Here are the best distilleries in the US (Napa is one of them).

Napa Valley - Best Relaxing Destinations in USA winery-1588676_960_720

Located in the Northernmost part of the Golden State, there are so many wineries to choose from that you can’t possibly hit them all.

Napa Valley is gorgeous, and the vineyards make this a relaxing destination. Tours of vineyards, wine tastings, history of the wine-making process, the warm sun, and the intoxicating smell of grapes are enough to get anyone in a calmer state of mind.

The bonus is to sip on some delicious fermented grape juice as you enjoy the scenery.

If you love Wine Tours in the US, read this .

Alaska — Anywhere, Really

At 570,641 total square miles, Alaska is the largest state in America.

It is one of the best places to see the Northern Lights .

With so much land, any place that you choose to visit is guaranteed to be quiet, peaceful, and breathtaking in its beauty.

Alaska - Best Relaxing Destinations in USA north-pole-1632525_960_720

The outdoorsy, thoughtful type would get the most from a visit to the Last Frontier.

In Alaska, the Stillpoint Lodge features a twenty-four-hour meditation space. You will have a great time with the scheduled or free-form meditation options.

With the way the lodge is set up, it works for groups or individuals.

There is no pressure to use a specific service, and spending most of your time in the organic garden isn’t uncommon. When visitors think of Alaska, the cold weather is the first thing on their minds.

It’s much more than that, with Stillpoint Lodge happily represented by the Kachemak Bay State Park. This is the only wilderness park in Alaska where you will find Halibut Cove.

You can explore the cold waters with an inflatable kayak and witness one-of-a-kind icebergs.

If the trip to the park seems a bit much, you can always take a scenic boat ride. You get the best weather possible when visiting Alaska during August and September.

Given its solitary nature and the great union you share with wildlife, Alaska is the ideal place to reflect on life and practice meditation.

This makes it a unique relaxation destination. Its sheer size and proximity to Mother Earth can remind you of the simple things in life and where you find the most happiness in yours.

Austin, Texas

Austin Texas Best Relaxing Destinations in USA austin-1402097_960_720

Travaasa is a paradise location located in Austin, TX, which is considered a great alternative to Hawaii. Making an itinerary filled with meditation, yoga, and relaxation doesn’t take long.

The spa services don’t get in the way of the location’s ambiance, as it seems to remain a thing on its own.

That’s important in more than one way and prevents frustration from dealing with ordinary ‘retreat’ bookings. Book at your convenience because there are no dedicated dates to lock in.

That makes Travaasa an excellent relaxation destination. The resort is only twenty minutes away from the city, so it works like a typical vacation.

You can always split time between relaxation and everyday activities in a pinch. More adventurous activities like canoeing are available, so Travaasa isn’t considered a one-trick pony.

Austin is a vibrant and bustling city full of unique attractions. If you’re planning to visit Austin , there are plenty of things to do while you’re in town.

Maine, New England

Maine is a very relaxed place on its own.

Maine - Best Relaxing Destinations in USA ocean-3833980_960_720

There exists the Rolling Meadows Retreat that adds to that by offering an intimate space that hosts up to eleven people.

This is an excellent choice for jobs that want to offer a retreat for workers in high-stress environments.

A social silence policy is in place once you’re settled and helps bridge the entire schedule.

There is yoga, free time, and encouragement to be more aware of your surroundings. Talking is permitted in guided sessions and, in total, can bring the entire experience circle.

A lot of the methods taught can be used in everyday life.

The instructors do an excellent job of making every minute count to your well-being. Visitors will find the retreat the best safe space after heavy testing, classes, and life stress.

Red Feather Lakes, Colorado

Shambhala is more than just a place to gather and clear your mind. Shambhala is a philosophy that speaks to those looking for peace in their life. Opposites can co-exist. By the way, Colorado is one of the top destinations for Spring Break for families .

Red Feather Lakes Colorado - Best Relaxing Destinations in USA landscape-1843128_960_720

As part of a six-hundred-acre retreat, the Shambhala Mountain Center is a great relaxation destination because it has diverse environments to meditate in.

Cell phone signals don’t work by default to keep the center’s peace intact.

Out of all the choices on the list, this one probably has the most programs available. No matter how many times you visit, there will always be something new to try.

Some popular programs are based on bestselling books or have a nature-based focus.

You can bring large groups of people and be assured that each person will have a different experience.

Tucson, Arizona

Tucson, Arizona, is one of the hottest places on the planet. With the desert, it can reach alarming temperatures with humidity.

Tucson Arizona - Best Relaxing Destinations in USA gambels-quail-817302_960_720

Deep in the heart of all this is Miraval Resort and Spa. On the surface, the heatwave makes Tucson seem like an unwelcome spot to unpack your mind.

But fortunately, it is a beautiful oasis to lower your stress levels to zero. Miraval uses proven techniques that prioritize health, rejuvenation, space, and unique experiences.

Going on a journey of self-discovery comes easily with the services provided by the Spa, making it a great relaxation destination.

Past and current guests have difficulty describing the experience without sounding like an energetic salespeople.

And if you have an outdoor personality, then a few places can match the hiking adventures of Arizona.

2. Travel single- A solo trip will allow you ample opportunities to meet new people, but there’s no one around for companionship when times get tough. If you’re traveling with your significant other, don’t forget about them while exploring the local nightlife! At least try not to.

3. Leave your cell phone – It can be difficult at first, but disconnecting from your cell phone can allow you a much-needed break. It’s hard to relax if you’re worried about work the entire time, and there are so many opportunities to have fun when technology is off – it’s excellent!

4. Limit your travel plan – There are so many attractions waiting to be explored when traveling; sometimes, without a solid plan, it’s easy for time to slip by. If you know what you want to see or do before leaving, try limiting yourself to maximize relaxation times.

5. Pack essentials only – After a long day of being on the go, it can feel good just relaxing in pajamas and a robe. By packing only necessities that provide comfort and relaxation, you don’t have to worry about anything besides sleeping and getting ready for the next day.

6. Take a yoga class – Yoga is arguably one of the best activities for your overall health, especially when practiced daily. Taking an occasional yoga class while on vacation can be extremely relaxing. If you’re not interested in joining an organized group, try it yourself! Google some “yoga poses” before leaving, and learn how to do each pose correctly. Once you arrive, take some time to relax by trying these poses in your hotel room or at the beach/park/local area with plenty of open space.

3 Hot List Hotels That Demand a Stay in 2024

By CNT Editors

Presented by Capital One

Every hotel winner on our 2024 Hot List makes its way there for a reason; these three properties serving are no exception. From brand-new properties The Fifth Avenue Hotel in the heart of Manhattan and the Eternal City’s 1, Place Vendîme to the just-reopened Kona Village, a Rosewood Resort on Hawaii’s Big Island, these are the new reliables where guests can make the most not just of the pristine properties but also the world of the destination around them. Here's how (and why) to spend a getaway at three of our 2024 Hot List winners, from Manhattan to Paris to Hawaii—plus what to pack for each.

The Portrait Bar at the Fifth Avenue Hotel in New York

The Portrait Bar at the Fifth Avenue Hotel in New York

The Fifth Avenue Hotel — New York City

The big hotel brands have long closed ranks in New York City along Central Park South, and most of them are great! But The Fifth Avenue Hotel, from its titular 5th Avenue address just above Madison Square Park and the world’s first Shake Shack (still a literal shack, albeit one with dreamy twinkly lights and ample outdoor seating) is a jewel box whose Mary Poppins-bag-style whimsy is made all the more impressive by its position amidst NoMad’s hustle and bustle. A five-story limestone-and-brick building with past lives first as part of a socialite’s estate and then as a bank, the hotel is storied despite its newness and fresh despite its long history. Designer Martin Brudnizki has payfully pulled at the Gilded Age, Renaissance palazzo roots with his jubilant palette and rich diversity of textures—wallpapers, rugs, and prints make an eye fat from feasting.

While a stay at The Fifth Avenue Hotel is ostensibly undertaken on some level to visit and see the Big Apple proper, stepping off the premises may prove unappealing once you’ve settled in. This is a whole world, one where the colors are richer and the people more thoughtful. After check-in, you’ll first meet your around-the-clock butler outside of your room where they await with a welcome drink and warm towel. Between 5 and 7 p.m., order a martini ritual to your room. Condescend to dine at onsite Cafe Carmellini, one of the best new restaurants in New York City. Flit out to nearby Gagosian and Fotografiska for a further art fix. It’s all that you need.

Beyond an extra suitcase to accommodate all the shopping you'll do nearby, pack whatever you feel most comfortable in—a neutral suit or little black dress to compliment the surroundings, or your most playful Rachel Comey to give the interiors a run for their money.

The exterior facade of the tony 1, Place VendĂŽme hotel in Paris's regally glamorous 1st arrondissement

1, Place Vendîme — Paris

Nestled above the 1st arrondissement’s Chopard boutique sits Paris’s new stealth-wealth gem of a hotel, the first from the Swiss fine jewelry maker owned by the Scheufele family. The watchmaking giant first bought the building, which dates back to 1723 (the roof and facades are protected historical monuments), a decade ago while it was still operating as another hotel, and subsequently embarked on a painstaking renovation and restoration project that birthed the beauty that exists today. With just 5 rooms and 10 suites, it’s a remarkably intimate affair. None looks like another, by the way—on one stay, you might lounge on the cobalt blue lounger of the modernist, Pop Art attic suite while the next sees you splayed out on the four-poster bed of double-height, quintessentially Parisian Appartement Chopard (the latter has its own hammam).

In the absence of an onsite restaurant, chef Boris Algarra slings his 24/7 menu (divided up between breakfast, day, and night) wherever the guest desires it—the library, the bedroom, you name it. And that’s saying nothing of the litany of fine dining found on the hotel’s doorstep—the neighborhood is the flñneur’s playground, with the Tulieres Gardens and prime shopping also a short jaunt away. Pack a good pair of walking shoes as Paris is, famously, best-walked from top to bottom with shopping bags weighing down either arm.

An aerial of a beach shore and hotel.

Kona Village, A Rosewood Resort, is prized for its location and laid-back vibe

Kona Village, a Rosewood Resort — Hawai'i

The new iteration of Kona Village, now operated by the reliably resplendent Rosewood group, ticks the boxes of design, location, and service in a way that few resorts across the Hawaiian islands have brushed the ceilings of. Senior editor Rebecca Misner dubbed the property “the Platonic ideal of the ‘Hawaiian hotel’” in her review. With 150 hale, or bungalows, dotting the 81 acres of oceanfront land, it earns its name for functioning as a sort of communal haven. The favored onsite watering hole, Shipwreck, sits within the gutted schooner of the original owner. A coconut outside a guest’s bungalow door sends the same signal that a do-not-disturb sign would at a more traditional hideaway.

As a preeminent resort, Kona Village offers everything you could ever dream of within its property line—two bars, two restaurants, a spa built into the site’s lava flow, and a beach that feels so endless in large part because there’s not much else in the vicinity. But the adventurous would be wise to call up the concierge, who can arrange excursions to the town of Waimea, as well as day trips to see the waterfalls in the North and guided hikes through hidden craters. Be sure to bring along your swimsuit, sarong, and a pair of water shoes for those excursions.

New Schengen Visa Rules for Indian Visitors: Key Questions Answered

Peden Doma Bhutia , Skift

April 23rd, 2024 at 5:39 AM EDT

Destinations value Indian travelers, but lengthy visa processing times lasting months act as significant deterrents. The adoption of these new regulations by European authorities reflects a proactive effort to tackle these concerns, aiming to boost tourism flow.

Peden Doma Bhutia

The European Commission has introduced a new visa “cascade” regime for Indian nationals applying for Schengen visas in India. This regime looks to offer longer-term, multi-entry Schengen visas, based on the applicant’s travel history.

Indian travel agents had been complaining of Schengen visa delays as a major challenge to the summer travel rush from India.

  • How does one qualify for the longer duration visas?

The European Commission can issue a two-year multiple-entry visa after a traveler “has obtained and lawfully used two visas within the previous three years.” This demonstrates a positive travel history and compliance with previous visa regulations.

Subsequently, after granting the two-year visa, authorities may issue a five-year visa if the passport has has adequate validity remaining.

  • What benefits do holders of these extended visas enjoy?

During the validity period of these visas, holders can enjoy travel rights equivalent to visa-free nationals within the Schengen area, allowing for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

  • Which countries are part of the Schengen area?

The Schengen area comprises 29 European countries, including 25 European Union member states: Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland, and Sweden. Additionally, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland are also part of the Schengen area.

  • Are there any restrictions or conditions to these visas?

Schengen visas do not grant the right to work within the Schengen area and are for short stays only. Additionally, the visas are not purpose-bound, providing flexibility for travel within the specified period.

Industry Take

Skift also spoke to players in the Indian outbound travel industry to understand what has changed in the new Schengen visa rules.

  • How is this different from the earlier visas that Schengen countries offered? Don’t they already offer multi-entry visas with longer duration to Indians?

Mahendra Vakharia, managing director of Pathfinders Holidays, said there was no standard policy of Schengen states for issuing these long-term visas earlier. Switzerland, France, Netherlands, Italy and Spain usually issued long-term visa, but it was all subjective. “With this new policy it should be a standard rule now,” Vakharia said.

  • Travelers mainly complain of longer processing times, has that changed?

Here too, there is no standard processing time as it varies from country to country, according to Vakharia. “France and Spain have been processing visas within four days, and then there’s Croatia, which takes 60 days,” he said.

Processing time will not change as of now, it will take time for the visa rules to be enforced, said an industry source, while highlighting that the visa would be especially useful for corporate travelers.

What Promoted The Move?

Speaking on the possible motivations, Vakharia acknowledged various reasons, including administrative capacity constraints at embassies to cater to the huge inflow of applications.

“As there is an overwhelming demand from Indian travelers, the process of securing visa appointments has posed significant challenges , especially for travelers residing in cities lacking VFS Global centers,” he said.

The European Commission said in an statement that the decision reflects the EU-India Common Agenda on Migration and Mobility, aimed at fostering comprehensive cooperation on migration policy. Facilitating people-to-people contacts is a key aspect of this agenda, acknowledging India’s importance as an EU partner.

The decision also reflects a realization of the strong economic benefits derived through the spending power of Indian tourists. As Vakharia aptly puts it, “Why let go of the Golden Indian Goodie Bag?”
