The Toyota Landcruiser Extended; 6 or 7 seater 4×4 Jeep knows how to navigate the toughest African roads.

This car has over the years proven to be robust and unbreakable! With the recent innovations, additional modifications have been made to provide extra comfort and drivability for the Landcruiser. The extension of the chassis has allowed for the originally 5 seater car to now carry 5 – 6 passengers (excl. the driver) and several other necessary extras including; Larger windows, charging points, a fridge, etc….. as we have explained below.

First Aid Kit

Each of our Toyota Landcruiser safari vehicles is equipped with a first aid kit to cater to emergencies while on the road. Our driver-guides are trained to handle minor emergencies while on safari.

Pop-up Roof Top

Each of our Toyota Landcruiser Extended vehicles has a rooftop that can lift up to afford you a 360° view of your surrounding. This makes it the ideal vehicle for viewing, photography, or Filming Wildlife.

Each of our Toyota Landcruiser Extended vehicles has a small fridge fitted so as help keep your drinks onboard chilled for when you need to sip off a cool drink while on a game viewing Safari.

Power Inverter

The vehicles are each fitted with power adapters to make it possible for you to charge your cameras, laptops, and any other electronics while you travel.

After much rigorous trial and testing we finally decided upon the 79 series as our across the board flagship vehicle. These vehicles offer us the rugged base from which to build our bespoke style of vehicle. We are incredibly happy with how they have turned out. They offer us the space, reliability and strength that we believe is necessary for our safaris. ‍ They make great vehicles for families of four or in extremis five (although please call us to discuss the logistics!). They easily hold 2 roof tents and if you are strict on personal luggage then we can sometimes squeeze in a ground tent too.

The Best Off-Road Truck Isn’t Found in the U.S.

When it comes to arguing about the best off-road truck there are a lot of contenders. In my mind, however, there’s no real competition for the title. The customized safari rigs—based on the Toyota Land Cruiser 79—that professional guides in Africa use for their clients have a set of features and capabilities that no other vehicle duplicates.

Qualities of the Best Off-Road Truck

What earns these rigs the top spot? For starters, they actually spend the majority of their time off-road. These are not pampered garage queens or casual weekend rock-crawlers. On a daily basis, these trucks have to tackle mud, hills, rocks, sand, water and brush that is thicker, thornier, and nastier than anything we see in North America. And what other vehicle needs to be able to hightail it across the veld with an angry elephant in pursuit?

Everything on these trucks is hardened for tough use and survivability. But unlike pure off-road vehicles like UTVs and other four-wheelers, they are road capable. The guides who rely on them road trip from one part of Africa to the next for work, so the trucks can handle long hours on pavement.

I’ve spent many hours and days riding in safari trucks over the years. Not only can they crawl across axle-breaking ground, but can do it with a Cape buffalo loaded in the back. And should you want to take a break and enjoy a luxurious meal, they do that too. About the only thing you can knock them for is not being used in the snow and cold. That’s a valid point. But even so, they’re still the best off-road truck.

Best Off-Road Truck Features

My friend Rob Lurie, a hunting guide from Zimbabwe, owns the truck pictured above. He’s been in the safari industry for more that 25 years and has worked the kinks out of his builds. He goes through a truck every five years or so and at this point is making only small modifications to his design.

Base truck : Toyota Land Cruiser 79 single-cab pickup. “This is the landmark safari vehicle of Africa,” Lurie says. “It can carry about 1.5 tons of load and has 4-wheel drive with differential locks on the front and the back. It comes with modern features like power steering and air conditioning but is still pretty simple.”
Motor and Transmission: “Mine’s a 4.5-liter V-8 diesel with a single turbo charger and 5-speed manual transmission. It’s the same engine that’s in the 200-series Land Cruiser, which is similar to the Sequoia that you have the in States and that has the twin turbos. The 4.2-liter straight six diesel is more common in Africa, but I like the V-8.”
Fuel : Dual 90-liter tanks for 180 liters of diesel, which translates to 47.5 gallons of fuel. In stock configuration, the truck gets about 19 mpg. With the mods and extra weight, expect that to drop significantly, but even at 16 mpg this safari rig will have a cruising range of more than 700 miles. For perspective, if you started driving the truck from New York City, you could probably get to Indianapolis before stopping for gas.
Base cost: $70,000. “It is built in South Africa but we pay a 65 percent duty tax to the government to import the vehicle, so that’s what really pumps the price up high.”

Add-Ons and Modifications

Front bumper. Gets replaced with a heavy-duty brush bar that incorporates LED lights and a 12,000-pound Warne winch. “Driving through the bush you have to worry about stumps and animals and the winch is useful in a lot of areas for getting us out of the mud and sand and gullies,” Lurie says.
Mesh seed catcher. “That stops the grass seeds from going into the radiators. It’s pretty important early in the year and when it rains a lot and the grass is high,” he says.
Rear bumper. “We replace it with a heavy-duty bumper that we can use our hi-lift jacks on to jack up the vehicle when we either get stuck or have flat tires,” he says. “Also it is a stepping bar for guys to get in and out of the truck.”
Tires. “I hunt with standard 7.50R16 14-ply tires as we’re in a lot of gravel, sharp stones, and rocks,” he says. “I find the wider, nicer-looking off-road tires get damaged a lot more so I hunt with standard-width tires that are narrower but much tougher.”
Air compressor.
Suspension. “With the extra weight we put on the vehicle we have to upgrade the suspension. I put EFS heavy-duty leaf springs on the back and heavy-duty coil springs up front with heavy-duty shocks all around,” he says. “I also have greaseable shackles for the spring hangers on back and every year I change out the shackle and spring bushings. They take a lot of flack from the dust and move around a lot.”
Hunting platform. “There are a whole lot of different designs. Mine has a gun rack that holds three guns and a hunting seat behind the cab that can seat three people and is removable for when we’re loading big animals. It also has brackets on either side to hold two spare wheels and keep them out of the way,” Lurie says. “There’s also a roof rack with a basket above the cab that can hold jackets, cameras, and other bits and pieces.”
Side steps. Two sets of rungs on either side to help hunters climb in and out of the truck.
Rhino lining. Protects the steel work in the back tray of the vehicle from blood, salt, scratches, and rust.
Hunting box. “It has axes, ropes, pulleys, spare tubes for the tires, repair kits, my tool kit, shovels and a pick—just a whole plethora of stuff,” Lurie says.
Fridge/Freezer. “I have an Engel 40-liter (10 gallon) fridge/freezer that runs off the 12-volt and keeps our drinks and anything else cold all day. Especially useful in summer when temperatures hit 110 degrees and you go for a walk and come back to a nice cold drink,” Lurie says.
Safari chairs.
Lunch kit. “I have a tea-box with all my equipment for coffee and tea and a lunch box where I keep the bits and pieces for grilling meat in the field, plates and knives and forks and spices,” he says.

The perennial Toyota Land Cruiser is one of the most dynamic vehicles on the face of planet Earth. This Japanese SUV comes from humble beginnings, and was originally used as a farming and off-road vehicle , but has come a long way. These days the Land Cruiser can be considered a luxury SUV that transports politicians and other dignitaries, and we've seen the current J300 generation get transformed into a carbon-clad street weapon , and even a rolling military bunker . But this topless safari version cruising the deserts of the United Arab Emirates is a first, and in all honesty, it looks amazing.

It is no secret that the UAE loves a good Land Cruiser. These cars are as ubiquitous as camels in the Middle East, and people use them in all kinds of roles, safaris clearly being one of them. The 300 Series is the most capable, and refined Land Cruiser yet, and this safari machine clearly caters to the well off.

The first thing you might notice is the lack of a roof and the two roll-over hoops. There's a small tent screen over the second row, and a massive bull bar to motivate any lazy camels crossing the road. With prices for the Land Cruiser starting at around $85,000, whoever commissioned this conversion clearly has some bucks to spend, or this car could have been damaged in a desert drifting incident. Either way, this has to be one of the most lavish safari cars ever.

Under the hood of the land cruiser sits a 5.7-liter V8 engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. This engine produces 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque which it sends to all four wheels. Standard features include four-zone climate control (that's most likely been rendered useless) perforated leather seats, wireless phone charging, a surround-view camera system, and blind-spot monitoring. We're not exactly sure what type of animals roam the dunes of the UAE, but at least you'll be able to spot them in style.

Toyota’s baby Land Cruiser could be arriving very soon and cost about as much as a RAV4.

During the 2024 Land Cruiser reveal, Toyota teased a smaller, still off-road capable-looking SUV in the background. We also saw a similar “Compact Cruiser” amidst Toyota’s smorgasbord of new EV concepts back in 2021. Both vehicles could preview a new Toyota SUV coming, the Land Cruiser FJ.

Here’s what you need to know about it.

Land Cruiser FJ should be the name

A LandCruiserForum user has uncovered a Toyota trademark application in Japan for “Land Cruiser FJ.” Toyota used “Land Hopper” for a three-wheel mobility concept . Per the Japanese website Best Car , another option could be “Land Cruiser FUN .” No name has been confirmed. But we’d have Land Cruiser FJ as the front-runner if it comes to North America.

The Toyota Land Cruiser FJ should be body-on-frame

According to Best Car and other reports , the Land Cruiser FJ should be a body-on-frame SUV on a shortened TNGA-F platform. It should be a compact SUV, similar in size to the Corolla cross. And we’d bet it looks boxy, judging from Toyota’s teaser, the Compact Cruiser concept and recent designs like the new Lexus GX .

The Toyota Land Cruiser FJ won’t be an EV — at least initially

Toyota initially unveiled the Compact Cruser as an EV concept. But Best Car says the Land Cruiser FJ will have a combustion engine. That report has the Land Cruiser FJ getting the 2TR-FE engine, which is the 2.7-liter inline-four base engine from the second and third-generation Tacomas. The report lists outputs of 161 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque.

Per Best Car Toyota abandoned work on the hybrid engine planned for the Land Cruiser FJ. A new hybrid version could arrive a year after the Land Cruiser FJ’s launch. We’d bet the more powerful hybrid version is the one Toyota would bring to America.

When will the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ arrive?

Best Car thinks the timeline may be delayed as Toyota deals with the fallout from its emissions cheating scandal . The outlet now expects Toyota to announce the vehicle sometime in 2024 with deliveries beginning in Spring 2025. If America has to wait for a hybrid version, that would mean 2026.

How much will the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ cost?

The Land Cruiser FJ should be super-affordable. Best Car is projecting a starting price between 3.5 and 4.5 million yen in the Japanese Market, which would be between $23,000 and $30,000 in America at the present exchange rate. YouTube analysis Kirk Kreifels believes the vehicle would be a bit more expensive in America , perhaps in the $30,000 to $40,000 range and slot below the 4Runner.

Will Toyota bring the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ to America?

Toyota has not confirmed the Land Cruiser FJ is coming. So we don’t know whether America will get it. But if the vehicle can clear emissions and safety standards in America, there’s no reason to think Toyota would not consider it.

The Land Cruiser FJ would come in at a price point Toyota dominates. If well executed, it could be a strong competitor for vehicles like the Ford Bronco Sport and undercut some of the markets for the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco .

Toyota Lays Out Full Trim Level Details and Pricing for 2024 Land Cruiser

With the reinvented 2024 Land Cruiser, Toyota seems to be acknowledging that a price closing in on six figures deters buyers from realizing an SUV’s off-road potential. For 2024, the Land Cruiser still packs standard full-time four-wheel drive, locking center and rear differentials, front and rear tow hooks, and a front skid plate. Those looking for greater suspension articulation can opt for the available electronically disconnecting front sway bar. Hopefully encouraging buyers to put that gear to use is a base price some 30% lower, with the 2024 Land Cruiser starting at $57,345 (all prices include $1,395 destination).

Powertrain Specs and MPG

In place of the outgoing SUV’s naturally aspirated 5.7-liter V-8 engine, the new Land Cruiser has half as many cylinders. But with a turbocharger and hybrid assistance, the 2.4-liter four-cylinder puts out 326 horsepower and 465 pounds-feet of torque, a deficit of 55 hp and an increase of 64 pounds-feet from the 2021 model. Power is sent through an eight-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels, and all 2024 Land Cruisers can tow up to 6,000 pounds. With an EPA-rated fuel economy of 22/25/23 mpg city/highway/combined, the modern powertrain clobbers the old 5.7-liter, which managed just 13/17/14 mpg.

Trim Levels and Safety Features

Named for the Land Cruiser’s first year on sale in the U.S., the 1958 hearkens back to the truck’s roots with a blend of retro styling elements, such as round headlights, and a basic equipment level. The 1958 is available in just three colors — black, white and silver — and rides on dark-gray 18-inch wheels. “Basic” means something quite different today than it did in 1958: The entry-level Land Cruiser is fitted with cloth seats, but they are heated. Occupants also enjoy keyless entry and start, tri-zone automatic climate control, a six-speaker sound system, and an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay .

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard on every Land Cruiser and features forward collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure steering assist, lane-centering steering, traffic-sign recognition and automatic high beams. Not included in the suite but also standard across the line are front and rear parking sensors, blind spot monitors and rear cross-traffic alert.

Somewhat confusingly, the mid-tier Land Cruiser doesn’t have a trim-level designation; it is simply the Land Cruiser. Riding on matte-gray 18-inch wheels, it can be had in seven colors, including a pair of two-tone options, and adds the disconnecting front sway bar, roof rails and a power liftgate. For a more modern touch, the Land Cruiser gets rectangular LED headlights, as well as LED foglights with selectable colors. Inside, it gets synthetic leather, heated and ventilated front seats, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10-speaker sound system, and front, side, and rear cameras for keeping an eye on obstacles while off-roading.

At the top of the range, the Land Cruiser First Edition scales back the color palette to a pair of two-tone options and two monotone schemes. It wears a power moonroof, matte-black 18-inch wheels, rock rails to protect the rocker panels, a unique skid plate, the 1958’s circular headlights with the mid-tier’s color-changing foglights and roof rails with a cargo basket. Occupants are treated to leather upholstery, a 14-speaker JBL audio system and wireless phone charging. Additional safety equipment includes a head-up display and front cross-traffic alert.

I’m heading to California this week to test four new Toyotas in the span of two short days, and to help me guide the intense review process, I have a question: What do you want to know about the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser and the 2024 Toyota Tacoma Hybrid ?

2024 Toyota Land Cruiser: legendary DNA meets new tech

More than 70 years after the launch of the original Land Cruiser, Toyota is proud to reveal the all-new 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser. This next-generation model is destined to continue the icon’s history of continuous production into a new era while drawing directly on the qualities that made the Land Cruiser name synonymous with strength and go-anywhere reliability.

Pre-sales of the new 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser for UK and European customers will open during the fourth quarter of this year, with the first vehicle deliveries expected in the first half of 2024. Further details of the UK model range and pricing will be announced soon, but the following is what we can reveal right now.

Classic construction with improved all-terrain performance

This new model represents the fifth generation of the Land Cruiser’s Light Duty , or Prado, product line, and as such will likely be identified by its 250 series chassis code. It retains the traditional body-on-frame construction of every Land Cruiser and follows the larger 300 series ( Station Wagon product line) Land Cruiser in adopting our GA-F platform, which plays a key role in significantly improving off-road performance.

The new frame is 50% stiffer, while the rigidity of the combined body and frame has been improved by 30%. These substantial increases contribute to improved responsiveness, handling and ride comfort, both on- and off-road. Suspension performance has also been enhanced, particularly in the area of wheel articulation – a key factor in off-road driving. At the same time, the new model is easy to manoeuvre and more comfortable on the road, true to our commitment to making the 2024 Land Cruiser eminently practical and tailored to customers’ day-to-day needs.

New electric power steering

The 250 series Land Cruiser is the first to adopt an electric power steering system. It reduces the amount of kickback that can occur when navigating rough terrain and provides smoother, more direct steering and improved manoeuvrability at all speeds. This new system also allows the new Land Cruiser to include Lane Tracing Assist as part of its comprehensive Toyota Safety Sense active safety and driver assistance package.

Disconnecting the front anti-roll bar

Further off-road capability is built-in with a new electronically disconnecting front anti-roll bar mechanism. This technology enables the driver to disengage the anti-roll bar using a switch on the dashboard, a facility that allows maximum wheel articulation – and therefore maximum tyre contact with the ground – to successfully tackle challenging terrain at low speeds.

Further support when driving off-road is provided by upgrades to the Multi-Terrain Monitor and Multi-Terrain Select system. Using high-resolution cameras and a dashboard display, the Monitor gives the driver a clear view of the area immediately around and beneath the vehicle. Meanwhile, the Select system automatically adapts the chassis and performance to suit the demands of different off-road driving conditions.

2024 Toyota Land Cruiser: new powertrain

In the UK and Western Europe, the new 2024 Land Cruiser will be introduced with our 2.8-litre 1GD-FTV turbo diesel engine – the same 2.8-litre unit installed in the Toyota Hilux. Engineered for a strong balance of fuel efficiency and performance, this four-cylinder engine produces 201bhp and is matched to a new eight-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission, giving it the strength to tow loads of up to 3,500kg.

An electrified version that combines the same 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine with 48V mild hybrid technology will be available in early 2025.

Design – modern yet traditional

The styling of the 2024 Land Cruiser captures the lean, functional beauty that’s found in the best professional tools. Design cues inspired by the model’s long heritage reinforce the ‘back to its origins’ ethos of the new Land Cruiser, creating a modern interpretation of the traditional form-follows-function approach.

In profile, the new 2024 Land Cruiser has a classic silhouette based around strong horizontal lines. It measures 4,920mm long, 1,980mm wide and 1,870mm tall, while the wheelbase is 2,850mm. Off-road performance is helped by shorter overhangs, sculpted corners and bodywork that subtly narrows towards the sills. Other body parts have been thoughtfully designed for easy replacement in the event of damage.

The interior can be specified with a choice of either five- or seven-seat configurations and offers a design that underlines the strength and functionality of an authentic off-roader. This is evidenced in details such as the horizontally arranged instrument panel and switches that are shaped for easy operation, even when driving over challenging terrain. All-round visibility has been given priority, assisted by the lowered belt line that allows deeper side windows to be fitted.

The new 2024 Land Cruiser will be introduced with a special First Edition model, available exclusively for customers to reserve during the initial pre-sales period later this year. Only 3,000 examples of this limited-run version will be built for Europe, which will be distinguished by special heritage-inspired styling features (see also lead image). Details include classic round headlights and two dedicated bi-tone exterior paint finishes: Sand and Smoky Blue.

Moscow residents full of questions for Home Depot

Nov. 4—Moscow residents pressed Home Depot officials on matters like traffic, jobs and water use during a community meeting Friday in Moscow.

In August, the Idaho State Board of Education unanimously approved a ground lease between Home Depot and the University of Idaho to build a 138,000-square-foot store and garden center on UI land just north of the Palouse Mall. Home Depot plans to open the store in 2025.

According to Moscow's city code, a large retailer like Home Depot is required to hold a community meeting before establishing a store in the city. Approximately 50 people attended that meeting Friday at the Best Western Plus University Inn.

People who attended, including employees of Moscow-Pullman Building Supply, questioned the officials about the economic effects of introducing Home Depot into a small community like Moscow.

Barry Simmons, Home Depot's real estate manager, said many smaller businesses actually want to be close to Home Depot stores because they drive traffic to the area.

Dan Zoldak, the site development coordinator for Home Depot, said it will benefit the community by bringing business and jobs to the market. He said Home Depot stores also attract contractors to cities they are located in.

According to Home Depot, the company drives $1 billion in economic activity in Idaho already.

Home Depot plans to hire 150 to 200 part-time and full-time employees in the Moscow store. This topic sparked some debate Friday as the Home Depot officials did not know what percentage of its employees will be part-time.

Alan Espenschade, director of operations for Moscow-Pullman Building Supply, said many local companies primarily hire full-time employees. He said 85 to 90% of Moscow-Pullman Building Supply's employees are full-time.

To compete with Home Depot's prices, Espenschade said Moscow-Pullman Building Supply may have to consider hiring fewer full-time employees,"which goes against our entire culture."

"It's the ideology of a big box store versus your more small to mid-level mom and pop stores.," he said.

Espenschade assumed that Home Depot would hire a much larger percentage of part-time employees, but the Home Depot officials could not say with certainty what that percentage would be.

"We cannot honestly tell you two years in the future how many part-time employees it will have," said Eric Douglas, manager of Home Depot's government relations.

Several people, including Moscow City Council candidate Evan Holmes, brought up concerns about the store's water use. Holmes asked for Home Depot to show the community a plan to minimize its water consumption.

Zoldak said the store will meet Moscow's low-flow requirements and use drought-tolerant landscaping. They also appeared open to the suggestion of recapturing rainwater from the store's roof.

Others pointed out that this does not account for the water required to sustain Home Depot's garden center. Tyler Garrett, Moscow-Pullman Building Supply CEO, said Home Depot said his store uses hundreds of thousands of gallons of water per year on its nursery.

As for traffic effects, Home Depot completed a traffic study that has not yet been approved by the city of Moscow. Home Depot plans to cover the cost of extending A Street along the front of the store. Zoldak said there will probably be a four-way stop at the A Street and Farm Road intersection.

Garrett said that section of A Street is already busy with traffic, and he is worried the new store will create "a traffic jam for blocks."

The Moscow store will likely reduce the amount of people driving to the Lewiston Home Depot. Simmons said about 20% of Lewiston's sales will migrate to the Moscow store.

"I do believe there is a good portion of the community here that would benefit from a Home Depot and actually prefer not to have to drive as far to get some of the materials they need," Simmons said.

The Home Depot district manager who oversees the Lewiston store did not attend Friday's meeting.

When asked about the lights outside the Home Depot, Zoldak said the lights will be dimmed after the store closes each night.

Zoldak said he believes the store meets all of the city's codes, but the plans still have to be approved by Moscow officials. He said the store is not a done deal, but he hopes to start getting construction bids in December or January.

Some questioned why Moscow city officials were not present at the meeting.

Moscow City Supervisor Bill Belknap said that Friday's gathering was an informal, off-record meeting. He said the city issues permits for this project, so it would not be appropriate for anyone affiliated with the city government to be present at such an event.

"The City is the permitting authority and members of the City's Zoning Board of Adjustment and City Council may be called to act as hearing examiners to consider any appeals based upon the official record," Belknap wrote in an email. "As a result, it is not appropriate for staff or the Mayor or City Council to participate in the meeting or gather information outside the official record which could jeopardize their ability to participate as hearing examiners."

Espenschade said after the meeting he is worried this store signals a paradigm shift for Moscow, which he fears is becoming homogenized like other cities.

"You used to come to Moscow, Idaho, because you could buy a coffee at One World, not Starbucks," he said. "You could go to Moscow-Building Supply, not Home Depot."

He said competition is great for the consumer and even businesses, but he is concerned Moscow is losing its identity.

"Everything's becoming vanilla," he said.
