These days, I’m usually on the receiving end of goodbyes – but I’ve had to say my fair share of farewells, too.

While ‘Have a safe journey’ will sometimes suffice, quoting a simple message, a beautiful saying or even a traditional blessing is an easy way to make a farewell more meaningful and memorable.

Tips for wishing someone a safe journey

Goodbyes are often emotional and can be overwhelming, especially when they take place at the airport or at the station. These tips can make saying farewell that much easier.

• Don’t leave your goodbye until the last minute. If you want to make it meaningful, make sure you set aside enough time to say everything you want to say.
• Focus on the next time you’ll meet. Whether it’s catching up for a meal or picking them up from the airport, make a plan and remind them (and yourself) that it’s only a matter of time before you see each other again.

Safe Shelter

Safe Journeys offers a safe shelter for those fleeing domestic violence. The emergency, short-term shelter accepts domestic violence victims and their dependents and provides a homelike setting with a communal kitchen, play area, and TV area.

The Legal Definition of Domestic Violence in Illinois

For the purposes of getting an order of protection, domestic violence is defined as any of the following:

Physical abuse - sexual abuse, physical force, confinement, restraint; purposeful, repeated, or unnecessary sleep deprivation; or behavior that creates an immediate risk of physical harm.

Harassment - unnecessary conduct which causes you emotional distress. The law assumes the following to be harassment:

creating a disturbance at your work or school;

repeatedly telephoning your work or school;

repeatedly following you in a public place or places;

repeatedly keeping you under surveillance by staying outside of your home, school, work, vehicle or another place you are in or by peering through your windows;

threatening physical force, confinement or restraint on one or more occasions; or

improperly hiding your child from you or repeatedly threatening to do so, repeatedly threatening to improperly remove your child from your physical care or from the state, or making a single one of these threats following an actual or attempted improper removal or hiding of your child; (Note: There is an exception for someone who is accused of doing this if s/he was fleeing an incident or pattern of domestic violence).

Intimidation of a dependent (someone can be “dependent” on the abuser because of age, health or disability) - this is defined as when the abuser makes you participate in or witness physical force, physical confinement, or restraint against any person regardless of whether that person is a family or household member.

Interference with personal liberty - this is defined as committing or threatening to commit physical abuse, harassment, intimidation, or deprivation, such as not giving you food, medicine, or shelter, with the intention of forcing you to do something you don’t want to do or not allowing you to do something that you have a right to do.

Willful deprivation – this is defined as purposely denying an elderly or disabled person the medication, medical care, shelter, food or other assistance that s/he needs, thereby putting that person at risk of physical, mental or emotional harm.

Safe Journeys: Violence education and available services

As a community and prevention educator at Safe Journeys, Heather Steele has many duties when it comes to building relationships within the community and providing education related to violence and oppression.  

Although Steele has only been with Safe Journeys for under one year, she loves her position as it allows her to educate others and share her passion of keeping people safe and healthy.  

“As a feminist, I feel like it is my duty to make people aware of the gravity of the pandemic levels of sexual and domestic violence occurring in our community,” said Steele.  

Much of Steele’s role at Safe Journeys consists of sending out messages through Facebook and Instagram to reach the community. She provides presentations, lectures, and workshops on a variety of topics including trauma, human trafficking, rape culture, consent, bystander intervention, and more.  

“I work with the community and IVCC to further our prevention goals,” Steele explained. “One of the most common trainings I conduct is recognizing abuse and then how to respond… We also train hospital staff, police, and teachers on prevention so that they can implement strategies in their organization.”  

In addition to Steele’s duties, Safe Journeys, a nonprofit located in Streator, Ill., offers services for victims of domestic and sexual violence in Livingston and LaSalle counties.  

Steele explained that all services are free of charge and confidential. They include counseling for adults and children, case management, shelter, legal and medical advocacy, and a frequently used support line for survivors that operates 24/7.  

She added that K-12 prevention educators are in schools every day of the week and the sizable number of counseling clients Safe Journeys works with. Counselors are also available to come to IVCC’s campus to provide services if needed.  

“Everything we do is victim-led,” said Steele. “We believe that victims should have the right to make their own decisions, especially because abusers seek to take away that control from a victim. Empowerment is a central theme when we work with survivors, as well as being trauma-informed so that we don’t cause any more harm.”  

As part of Wellness Week, Safe Journeys will be hosting a coping skills workshop at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30 in CTC 124. Steele is currently arranging for a speaker to share her story in April for Sexual Assault Awareness Month and has provided lectures in classes throughout the semester.  

IVCC’s students, staff, and faculty can get involved with Safe Journeys by volunteering, applying to work as shelter advocates, completing internships, and educating oneself and others.  

Steele and Safe Journeys recognize how difficult it may be to reach out for help and reminds everyone that they will never ask a survivor to do anything they are uncomfortable with.  

“To someone struggling: We believe you,” Steele stated. “Your pain/trauma is valid. We want to support you in whatever way you would like. Asking for help is brave. When you are ready, we are here. You are not alone.”

Safe Journeys in La Salle County sees increase in domestic violence calls during the pandemic

The number of new clients at Safe Journeys shelter for domestic violence and sexual assault have not risen during the pandemic, but the agency that serves La Salle and Livingston counties has seen an increase in calls.

Streator’s Zonta Club led a walk through Streator’s downtown Thursday night before settling in at Park Place to listen to Safe Journeys Shelter Director Kim Burrow discuss how the domestic abuse shelter has functioned over the past 20 months of the pandemic.

October is domestic violence awareness month.

Safe Journey serves 550 clients and regularly receives calls from outside of its service area, where it provides limited services.

“The number of calls coming in from out of our service area on our crisis line were coming in from areas as far north as Gurnee and as far south as the Missouri state line,” Burrow said. “The Illinois Domestic Violence Hotline makes calls to shelters across the state to get a bed count, which has made it easier for individuals seeking shelter.”

Safe Journey has 16 beds available typically but the agency has had to limit who can stay in what room to one family or an individual while working with local hotels to avoid having to turn anyone away.

Burrow said it’s surprising how quickly the extra steps, such as cleaning and sterilizing and mask wearing became once it was necessary, and the shelter has been able to make it to this point having one person go into quarantine, although that person didn’t test positive for COVID-19.

The shelter overcame these obstacles not just by limiting capacity, but also by limiting the sharing of toys by children to keep in a child’s room separately and by limiting dinners to microwave meals and disposable tableware during the height of COVID-19.

Executive Director Susan Bursztynsky said the 550 clients Safe Journey serves isn’t just women and children: The organization serves men as well.

The Zonta Club invited Burrow and Bursztynsky to speak to bring awareness to domestic violence.

The club envisions a world in which women’s rights are recognized and every woman is able to achieve her full potential, where women have access to all resources and are represented in decision making positions on an equal basis with men.

Burrow said anyone in need or anyone who knows anyone in need can call the crisis line at 800-892-3375.

History [ edit ]

The Ukrainians are understandably very proud of their capital's role in establishing European civilization in Eastern Europe. Kyiv is one of the oldest cities in Eastern Europe dating back to the 5th century although settlements at this location existed much earlier. By the late 9th century, Kyiv was at the center of an emerging Eastern Slavic state. Between the 10th and early 13th centuries, the city reached its golden age as the capital of the first Ukrainian state known today as Kievan Rus ( Kyivan Ruthenia, or Rus-Ukraine ). It was this state that shaped the religious and cultural foundations of the modern East Slavic states of Ukraine, Russia and Belarus . Russia also claims its origin in Kievan Rus, and this claim continues to be a major bone of contention between Ukrainians and Russians.

In the middle of the 13th century, Kievan Rus was overrun by the Mongols. Later that century, Kyiv became part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In 1569 the city was absorbed into the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. In 1654 the Cossack, Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky "liberated" Kyiv from that Commonwealth, but then promptly folded it into the Russian Empire, an action that continues to be a sore point for Ukrainian nationalists.

Full Russian annexation came in 1775 and the city remained under Russian rule with brief independence between 1918 and 1920 during the chaos that followed the Russian Revolution. Over these two centuries, Kyiv experienced growing Russification and Russian immigration. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, it became the capital of independent Ukraine and is now discovering its place as a large European capital.

Climate [ edit ]

Average temperatures are maximum 26°C (79°F), minimum 15°C (59°F) in summer and maximum -2°C (28°F), minimum -8°C (17°F) in winter. Spring and autumn (fall) can be very brief. Heat waves featuring temperatures as high as 38°C (100°F) are rare but not unheard of in the summer months, and brief but potent cold spells with temperatures as low as -20°C (-4°F) are not uncommon in winter. Wintery precipitation can begin as early as October, and snowfall is fully expected by late fall and the winter months, when it can become intense enough to affect travel. However, snow cover is not always constant and even in the winter there can be periods when the ground lies barren. Warm clothes are a necessity from November through March, but dressing in removable layers will help travelers stay comfortable in any situation.

There are international direct trains to Chisinau (15 hr), Vienna (24 h) and Warsaw (17 hr). Ukrainian Railways [dead link] has Intercity trains from Poltava (3 hr), Lviv (5 hr), Kharkiv (4 hr 30), Dnipro (5 hr 15 min) and Odesa (7 hr 15 min) among many other smaller cities - usually with two daytime trains and one slower overnight train. Direct trains from Crimea (under Russian military occupation) remain suspended.

It's possible to organize trips down the River Dnipro to the Black Sea in summer. A travel agency in Ukraine can book these trips for you.

Get around [ edit ]

Kyiv can seem quite foreign to the western tourist, as most signposts are in Cyrillic script. It is still largely a city where few people know English, but their number among young people is growing quickly. Many may not be able to maintain a conversation, but are likely to understand spoken English. Many cafés and restaurants offer menus in English, and the Metro has all announcements in Ukrainian and English. For the non-Russian or Ukrainian speaker, it's quite possible to get around easily, and it is a very interesting city to explore.

It is advisable, however, to pick up a pocket Russian or Ukrainian phrasebook, and learn the Cyrillic alphabet, which can be fun and is easy to learn. Spend some time practicing key words and phrases (e.g. 'hello', 'thank you' and 'bill please'). Even what you regard as a feeble attempt at Ukrainian or Russian will amuse most people to the point where they become comfortable engaging in pantomime or trying out the little bit of English they know.

Among locals, it might be considered impolite to chat loudly (e.g. in the Metro), point or wave one's hands. According to a superstition, it's suggested to avoid whistling indoors.

On foot [ edit ]

For shorter distances, there is no better way of getting around Kyiv than hitting the sidewalk, especially in the areas of the city center like Maidan Nezalezhnosti, Kontraktova Ploshcha, Arsenalna. The city center area consists of many hills, so be prepared and plan accordingly. The underground pedestrian crossings are ubiquitous and let you cross the busy streets without waiting for the traffic lights, many of them connect to the underground malls, being a specialty of Kyiv. Keep in mind they are often not equipped with elevators, just the stairs.

By tram [ edit ]

Travelling by tram mostly for on or to suburbs can be an option. In western Kyiv maybe a useful end station which is at the M2 "Kontraktova Ploscha". From here depart No.14 far to the westward and No.18 to the M1 "Vokzalna". Also, from M2 "Kontraktova Ploscha" depart to northbound No.11 to M2 "Obolon", No.19 to M2 "Minska", No.12 to northwest, a bit out of city limit to Horenka settlement. By car (rental) [ edit ]

With the taxi app rides ubiquitous and cheap, there is generally little reason to rent a car unless exploring outside the city. Kyiv city traffic is known to be quite heavy unless on weekends.

Traditional car rental apps like Booking or Kayak let you compare the options across multiple locations for the car to rent for multiple days and has to be returned to the same location (unless paying extra fees).

Car-sharing apps like Getmancar may be a better choice for short trips and let you save money in comparison to the taxi apps, the cars can be picked-up and dropped off in minutes flexibly in the zones all over the city (including the airports). Make sure to sign up on the app a day before - as the validation is not instantaneous.

Motherland Statue and war memorials [ edit ]

Kyiv was pretty much destroyed during the invasion in World War II. The memorial near the motherland statue is pretty gripping. Lots of examples of classic Soviet-era memorial statuary, as well as some amazing exhibits of military hardware. The National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War located in the base of the statue is a must-see for visitors interested in the impact the German invasion had on the Soviet Union. Well worth the visit even if you don't speak or read any Russian or Ukrainian (several English language tours are provided daily). It's well curated and full of artifacts (including weapons, battle maps, hundreds of original photographs, and a moving installation at the end of the exhibit symbolizing the great losses suffered). There is also a small museum of the Afghan conflict nearby. Try to enter coming from the top part of the Pecherska Lavra. This way you get submerged with old soviet music and dark statues. M1 "Arsenalna".

• Kyiv has many recreational running routes with different road surfaces. If you like plain terrain, opt for Mariiinskyi Park in the city center. You can even extend your route and run across the Lovers’ Bridge to the Puppet Theatre. If you fancy moderate hills, go for Spivoche Pole , with lots of open air and field tracks for those who do not like blacktop surface. For moderate mountainous lovers, there is Hryshko Botanical Garden with views to Paton Bridge and the Dnipro River .
• Kyiv Shooting Club offers firearms shooting , providing different kinds of weapons available even for non-licensed travelers.
• Ice skating is possible inside the city’s shopping centers. The largest indoor rink is at the Kosmopolit Shopping Center with an area of 1,800 m 2 (19,000 ft²). You can of course find outdoor and covered skating rinks, such as Katok . It is a spacious “ice rink bubble”, just 15-minute walk from the M2 "Pochaina".

There are a number of private schools where you can learn Ukrainian or Russian, either part-time or full-time. There are also experienced teachers in the city - check out resources such as Kyiv In Your Pocket, The Kyiv Post , and What's On Weekly for details of schools and teachers.

Many of Ukraine's universities are situated in the capital city.

Work [ edit ]

Foreigners can sometimes find work teaching their native language. Pay is usually decent enough to live on in Kyiv if you get enough pupils and live by local standards.

As is the nature in a global economy, professionals with skills in demand, e.g. accountants and IT professionals, can be employed with global firms in Kyiv, without knowledge of Russian or Ukrainian languages.

Getting a work permit (visa) is a necessity for foreigners if they are going to be employed by any legal entity (exceptions apply only for international institutions and representative offices of foreign companies). The work permit is more of a hiring permit. The potential employer has to apply with the labor administration for hiring a non-resident employee. With the application a complete CV, as well as documents showing an accredited education, have to be submitted.

Banks and exchanges booths are very easy to find, with most of them displaying their rates outside the shop. Simply go around at least 2 blocks and compare rates. While a few of them are open 24 hours, those that do remain open at night may display bad buying rates.

Rates at the airport are not as good as in the city center. Not all hotels will change money and if you arrive in the evening or on a Sunday you could find yourself with no money for dinner if you don't change at least some at the airport. Most banks operate on Saturdays as well as Mondays to Fridays.

ATMs are everywhere and generally work with international credit and debit cards.

Like in most places in Ukraine, having plenty of small change will prevent hassle from shop staff who perpetually lack small money.

Eat [ edit ]

In general, it is very cheap to dine in Kyiv by Western European or US standards. So long as you stay away from the places that totally pander to tourists or to the Porsche Cayenne-driving "elite", the food is great and cheap. Try the Borscht and the Mlyntzi and then try absolutely everything else. Baked goods are cheap and great too. Even the ice-cream on the street is great. Try, for example, the one to the right from M1 "Khreschatyk" - blue kiosk with varying length of queues.

When you see vendors selling some liquid from big yellow/blue tanks on the street, you can be sure that it is "Kvas," which is a brewed bread drink. Some people like it and others hate it. It tastes a bit like malt, and the alcohol content is so low (0.05-1.44%) that it is considered acceptable for consumption by children. Try "Odyn Malenkyi" (one small) drink.

You should not drink the tap water (for reasons both chemical and microbial). It is advisable to buy bottles in the supermarkets. You can always order "Bonaqua" (a brand of sparkling mineral water), but beer is just about as cheap.

There are several Irish pubs, none authentic, but OK if you're in need of a Guinness and expat company. One is located near Golden Gate ( Zoloti Vorota ) on Volodymyrska Street (called, eponymously, The Golden Gate Pub ). Another (and the first in Kyiv) is O'Briens on Mykhailivska Street (one of the streets running west off Maidan sq., the one to the right, with a branch of OTP Bank on the corner). Both are expensive by Kyiv standards. A new one has opened in Podil, on the corner of Gostyny Dvor, near the Dutch embassy (can't miss it as it's close to the bottom of Andriivskyi Descent) called the Belfast Pub . Other than these centrally located ones, others lie scattered around Kyiv, they do not cater to the ex-pat crowd and have better prices than you expect to find in any 'western' country. Keep your eyes open. Also try Dockers Pub.

Kyiv was part of the USSR. Some things work well, and other things may be broken. There is no point in stressing about this. Arrive with that realization and be prepared to roll with a few surprises.

International travel comes with excitement and a lot of planning. Part of the experience depends on how well-prepared you are for your trip. To ensure a fun and safe time abroad, check out some of these tips to get the most out of your stay.

1. Pickpockets

There’s a perception in Eastern Europe that pickpocketing happens all too frequently. However, travelers across Europe have been targeted by their fair share of pickpockets. Keep your money and documents in a money belt or similar anti-theft bags.

2. Pushy Restaurants

It’s common to find restaurant employees or owners near the front door of their venue, handing you menus and trying to pull you into the restaurant to sit down. Some even walk alongside you down the street. Politely decline and go on your way.

3. Be Aware Of Canals

Canals are everywhere throughout Europe and not all are marked or easily identified. Many small towns and villages have canals that flow right up to the street, and when the water is high or covered in grass, tourists accidentally fall in.

4. Costumed Street Performers

Similar to costumed street acts you’d see in Hollywood, there are areas throughout Europe with locals dressed in costumes. The gimmick is that they offer to take photos with you and then demand you pay for the pictures. Keep an eye out for these folks, and do not hand them your camera.

5. Car Rentals

This applies to travelers heading to major cities. If you plan to stay in the city, there isn’t much need for a rental car since many cities are walkable with easy access to various shops, dining, and entertainment. If you plan to visit more rural areas, then you may need a car.

6. Unwanted Souvenirs

Many tourist spots sell generic souvenirs and trinkets. Vendors will try to place them in your hands. Then, once you’re holding it, they expect you to cough up money to buy it. If you plan on picking up souvenirs, be aware of the areas where you’re shopping.

7. Cash Vs. Card Payments

If you sit down at a restaurant and they say you can pay with a card, ask to see the card reader. Many travelers have experienced restaurants claiming they accept card payments and then insisting on cash only when they present the bill.

8. Respect Memorials and Landmarks

Many destinations throughout Europe hold significant cultural and historical importance to locals. Before visiting, research local traditions to make sure you show respect and are on your best behavior while there.

9. International Phone Service

When traveling abroad, you’ll need to plan to know what type of cell phone and data services are available. You may need to wait until you arrive at your destination to buy a local SIM card, or you can sign up with your phone provider for service that’ll cost you a daily fee.

10. Befriend Locals

First-timers in a city can get the most out of their trip by learning what locals like to do. They benefit by knowing where the locals like to eat, what they enjoy doing, and where they like to go. Hotel concierge or even a tour guide can be great resources.

11. Hold Onto Your Belongings

Traveling with a purse or bag means you need to be aware of where it is. Even when you’re sitting, don’t leave it on the seat next to you or at your feet. Thieves are on the lookout for bags to snatch. There’s also a better chance you’ll forget it and walk away if it’s not physically on your person.

12. Don’t Leave A Tip

In many (but not all) European cities, tipping is not a common practice. Although it’s a regular part of the dining experience here in the U.S., some servers may be insulted if you leave them a tip. Learn local customs before slipping a few dollars in with your paid bill.

13. Learn the Language

A few months before your trip, take the time to learn a little of the local language. You can use apps like Duolingo or Rosetta Stone to help remove some of the stress of the language barrier. You don’t need to be fluent, but common phrases like “Please,” “Thank you,” and “Where is the bathroom” will come in handy.

14. Indoor Voices

In many European cities, speaking loudly in public places is frowned upon, and even seen as disrespectful. This may be why the stereotypical American is considered to be loud and obnoxious. Whether or not that’s true, be conscious of your volume when traveling throughout Europe.

15. Menu Photos

Many restaurants and cafés have photo menus with the cost clearly labeled. If you notice your bill is more expensive than you thought, reference the menu photos and check any price discrepancies before paying. They may have charged you extra, assuming you’d be none the wiser.
