A day trip from Salzburg to Hallstatt is a highlight in any Austrian itinerary. Knowing how to get to Hallstatt from Salzburg is the first step toward a successful excursion. This detailed guide provides you with all the information to take the frustration out of planning a day trip to Hallstatt.

Salzburg to Hallstatt by Train and Bus

The distance from Salzburg to Hallstatt is only 71,7 km. This doesn’t mean you can travel there in under and hour. Public transport mostly requires at least one change and sometimes a combination of bus and train travel.

If you prefer to drive, the scenic road route via the Wolfgangsee and Bad Ischl also takes well over an hour.

Although not the fastest way to get to Hallstatt from Salzburg, the train is the easiest if you depend on public transport. However, the beautiful scenery passing by the train window makes it more than worthwhile.

The ÖBB (Austrian Railway) trains are clean and punctual, making it easy to plan your time in Hallstatt. To find the best connection from Salzburg to Hallstatt on the day and time you are planning to travel, you have the following options:

  • Go to tickets.oebb.at
  • Use an international ticket shop like Rail Europe or Trainline
  • Download the ÖBB app which also allows you to buy the tickets at the same time.

Insider Tip

If your dates are set and you book in advance, you can secure the special saver price (called Sparschiene). You are then bound to the specific train and time on your ticket. If you want more flexibility, the standard ticket at €29 is a better option. A group discount, starting at 5% for two people, is also available. And if you stick to the local trains, there is a special ticket called Einfach Raus for 2 to 5 people. Starting at €36 for 2 people, plus €4 for every additional person, you can travel on as many local trains as you like on a specific calendar day (starting from 09:00 on weekdays).

By Bus AND Train

Taking Bus 150 from Salzburg to Bad Ischl and the train to Hallstatt from there, is actually a little quicker than taking the train via Attnang-Puchheim.

Get the complete Bus 150 timetable here .

The 1,5-hour bus journey takes a scenic route via Lake Wolfgang. Try and get to the bus early to increase your chance of getting the front right seats from where you have panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

Once you arrive in Bad Ischl by bus, there is a connecting local train to Hallstatt. The total journey time from Salzburg to Hallstatt is just over two hours.

The Hallstatt Ferry

If you think the Hallstatt train stops in the centre of the village, you are wrong. Instead, it drops you on the other side of the lake from the village. This turns out to be a huge advantage.

Why? Because it forces you to take the boat or ferry from the station to the town. And this gives you the opportunity to take in all the pretty views of the town that you saw in the pictures that inspired you to visit in the first place.

Hallstatt Austria

When you step off the train, just follow the footpath leading to a small lakeside building where the Hallstatt ferry awaits. Someone will sell you a ticket at €3,50 before you get on board.

The Hallstatt ferry timetable is conveniently set up to coincide with the arrival and departure of trains. The crossing takes about 15 minutes. The Hallstatt Market docking station, where you disembark, is a 5-minute walk from the Market Square with its colourful houses against a green mountain backdrop.

TIP – Don’t waste time to get to the ferry after leaving the train. Get on the boat as quickly as you can to secure a spot on the open front deck for the best position to take pictures of the idyllic setting.

Bus Only to Hallstatt from Salzburg

Of course, it’s also possible to travel all the way from Salzburg to Hallstatt by bus. In this case you have the follow options:

Salzburg to Hallstatt by Car

Getting to Hallstatt by car from Salzburg is possible via 2 main routes.

As you can see there’s not much difference in distance and driving time. The first route is probably the more scenic one, passing through the beautiful Salzkammergut lake district.

The second one takes the A10 highway for which you need the Austrian vignette (toll sticker) before turning off onto the B166 where you will soon travel over the Gschütt mountain pass. Get the full directions with maps for both routes here .

Hallstatt Parking

The Hallstatt historic centre and waterfront is traffic free during normal daytime hours. However, there are three big parking areas on the outskirts of town to accommodate visitors arriving by car. They are well marked and even have big electronic information boards indicating the number of free spots available. Car Park P2 is the most convenient for day visitors. Find more information here .

Salzburg to Hallstatt Tours

A shuttle service or tour is a good option for a Hallstatt day trip if your time is very limited, you are travelling in a group or you just don’t want to be bothered with public transport or renting a car.

Did you know?

The Chinese like Hallstatt so much that they built an exact replica in China.

Top Things to Do on a Hallstatt Day Trip

The name Hallstatt means salt settlement. Salt has been mined here since the 2nd millennium BC. Today, visitors are simply in awe of the beautiful lakeside and mountain setting of the village where, for some part, time stood still. The remarkable Hallstatt-Dachstein Alpine landscape of which it is part has a well-deserved spot on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

The Hallstatt Skywalk

To visit Hallstatt and not enjoy the UNESCO World Heritage view from the skywalk 360 m above the historic centre would be a travesty. The panorama of Lake Hallstatt, its lakeside villages, and the surrounding Alps will be forever etched in your memory.

The World Heritage View from the Hallstatt skywalk.

The Hallstatt skywalk is in front of the Rudolfsturm (Rudolf’s Tower) on the Salzberg (Salt Mountain), home to the oldest salt mine in the world. The tower dates to the late 13 th century and was used as living quarters of the mine manager until 1954. Today it is a restaurant.

There are two ways to get to the top of the mountain – walking or taking a cable car. On a day trip, I will suggest taking the Salzberg cable car. The bottom station is not even a 10-minute walk from the Hallstatt tourist information office.

Hallstatt Cable Car Prices Roundtrip

When you exit the cable car, you can walk the remaining (short, but steep) distance to the Hallstatt skywalk or take the Panorama Lift to the top. Use of the lift is included in the cable car price. Have your camera ready when exiting the lift, because you will cross a little bridge spanning a deep gorge from where you will get a taste of the views awaiting you on the skywalk.

Standing on the Hallstatt skywalk is not for the fainthearted. It helps to look into the distance instead of straight down. Plus, if you’ve made it this far, you might as well go right to the front to take the compulsory picture.

Tip: Consider visiting the salt mine if you have an extra 2 hours to spare on your Hallstatt day trip. This is where it all started 7,000 years ago. The tour through the mine is fun, interactive and informative. The oldest wooden staircase in Europe, one of the more recent discoveries in the prehistoric section of the mine, has been incorporated into a Bronze Age Cinema 400 metres below ground.

The Hallstatt Market Square

From salt miners, fishermen and food merchants to 500,000 tourists per year – the market square is the heart of Hallstatt and witness to an unfathomable era of ancient and modern history.

The Hallstatt market square is a must stop on a day trip from Salzburg to Hallstatt.

Most of the colourful houses surrounding the Holy Trinity statue on the market square were built after a devastating fire in 1750. This is where the residents celebrate age-old traditions such as the annual Corpus Christi procession. If you are lucky, you will hear the Saline band perform.

Even if nothing officially is happening, there is something happening on the Hallstatt market square. Find lunch or something to drink in one of the cafés or restaurants, buy a souvenir to remind you of your visit, or watch your fellow tourists from a quiet spot on one of the benches while licking on an ice-cream.

Hallstatt Waterfront

A highlight of a day trip to Hallstatt is a walk along the waterfront. The walk is compulsory if you want to get from the market square to the Salzberg cable car or vice versa. However, this is one compulsory walk you will even take voluntarily. Simply follow the signs to the tourist information centre ( where you will turn away to the cable car station). Or you can continue a little bit further to Hallstatt Lahn, another ship docking station, from where you have another beautiful photo angle.

View of Hallstatt from near the tourist information office.

Keep your eyes open for the tightly stacked timber houses on the water’s edge. The architectural masterpieces were built for the former residents to have direct access to the lake.

Boat rental on Lake Hallstatt.

The photo opportunities are endless, especially if you are lucky enough to find some swan close to the water’s edge. If you don’t see a real, live swan you may see some bigger ones with people in. These are popular pedal boats that are for rent together with a few other options.

Hallstatt Bone House and Catholic Church

You simply must make time to walk to the Catholic church and adjacent St Michael’s chapel on your day trip from Salzburg to Hallstatt. It’s easy to find to the right of the market square (facing the mountain). The short five to ten-minute walk weaves between the homes of the locals and is well sign-posted.

Hallstatt cemetery view in front of the bone house.

Many people skip the parish church (dating to 1505) and head straight to the Gothic chapel. Why? Because of its unique, if somewhat gory, contents – the exhumed bones of more than 1,200 people, including over 600 painted skulls.

The reason for all the human bones isn’t a mass murder or some kind of plague but rather a lack of space in the cemetery around the church. To make room for the “ new dead” the “old dead” were dug up and their bones moved to St Micheal’s from as early as the 1100s.

Hallstatt Bone House.

Flowers were originally painted on the exhumed skulls to symbolize wreaths. The paintings later became more elaborate when the names and dates of birth and death of the deceased were added. Check out this link for a 360° view of the bones inside the chapel .

An entrance fee of €1,50 to the bone house is charged. The opening hours are daily from 10:00 to 18:00 from May to October and 11:30 to 15:30 (closed Mondays and Thursdays) from November to April.

Where to Eat and Drink in Hallstatt

Rudolfsturm.

The Rudolfsturm Restaurant is an excellent spot for lunch after you’ve plucked up the courage to stand on the Hallstatt skywalk. And for a restaurant with a World Heritage view its prices compare well to that of the average Austrian restaurant.

Luch view from Rudolfsturm Restaurant in Hallstatt.

We shared a typical Austrian Jausenplatte (snack plate) consisting of bread, cheeses, cold meats, hardboiled eggs, and bread spreads. It was more than enough for two. Other traditional Austrian dishes on the menu include schnitzel, knödel (dumplings) and Apfelstrudel (apple strudel).

Braügasthof

The Braügasthof has been brewing and serving beer since 1504 when it first got its license from Emperor Maximilian I. Today, it is a small hotel with a guest garden/restaurant on the water’s edge opposite the road. You can’t miss it on the way between the market square and the tourist information centre . Try the fresh fish from the lake!

You can’t miss Café Derbl in the big yellow building on one corner of the market square. They literally serve everything – from cakes and pizza to schnitzel and salads. They also brew and serve their own craft beer called Hallstatt. Das Bier.

Practical Tips for Your Hallstatt Day Trip

  • Keep your €0,50 coins for the public toilets in the historic centre . They are on your right on a little side street off the main pedestrian road just after the market square (direction tourist information office).
  • There is a wi-fi hotspot on the market square.
  • Make sure you have enough cash on you because many restaurants and shops don’t accept credit or debit cards. Alternatively, ask about card facilities before you order or buy.
  • If you visit Hallstatt in June you may have the chance to witness one of the age-old traditions when the locals celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi or Fronleichnam on the Market Square and beautifully decorated boats on the lake.

Thank you for detailing the travel arrangements; I always find that to be the most stressful part of a trip! Hallstatt looks stunning- what a warm and inviting village!

Koen

I did not know they build a copy in China haha. It’s really a great guide of Hallstat, looks like there are a lot of things to see and do. We made it to Innsbruck and the Alps last summer, maybe next year we can go to the Salzburg area.

I’ve never been to Austria but villages like these make me remember I really want to go! I always look out for places with both water and mountains and that have plenty of greenery as well as picturesque buildings. These spots with their flower covered buildings, glassy water in and mountain ranges in the distance look just perfect for an alps active getaway.

I had no idea there was a replica of Hallstatt in China. That’s amazing! I was actually in Hallstatt earlier this summer and there were bus loads of Chinese tourist. I was wondering why there were so many there but now it all makes sense! We drove from Salzburg to Hallstatt and the drive was lovely, but unfortunately it started raining when we arrived so we didn’t wind up taking the ferry or the cable car. Based on your pictures they both look like they provide great vantage points of Hallstatt and the surroundings. One word of warning – if …  Read more »

I love UNESCO world heritage sites and Hallstatt must be the most beautiful site among all. Mere fact Salt mining started here 2 millennium BC, makes this place special for me. Being a road tripper I would love to reach here via road enjoying the alpine landscapes of Wolfgangsee and Bad Ischl. Would plan to reach early morning to enjoy the sunrise from skywalk.

I’ve always wanted to go to Hallstatt, but I had absolutely no idea that it was so close to Salzburg or I would’ve gone when I was there for a quick day trip instead! Also, that’s too funny that there’s a replica of the city in China! That’s insane! The bone chapel sounds really unique!

A day trip to Hallstatt – The PERFECT itinerary + budget

Hallstatt is one of the most picturesque towns in Europe. With wooden houses, a beautiful lake in front of it guarded by majestic mountains, and some of the most incredible views, Hallstatt should be on your itinerary when visiting Austria.

Girl at Hallstatt lookout point

After spending a few days in Salzuburg , we decided to visit this fairytale town and explore it for an entire day. We saw many pictures from Hallstatt on the internet but nothing could have prepared us for what we were about to see. You can check out the best viewpoints here .

If you’re planning to spend one day in Hallstatt, I’m here to help you. In this post, you’ll find all the information you need about this beautiful town together with some really useful tips & tricks.

1. Is Hallstatt worth visiting?

So, you’re traveling to Austria but you’re not sure whether or not you should visit Hallstatt? The truth is, Hallstatt was my favorite part of my road trip through Austria and I couldn’t recommend it enough!

It’s true, sometimes it might get busy and everything in Hallstatt is quite pricey but hey, those views are definitely worth it! This little town, overlooking the Hallstatt Lake will surprise you at every step.

Here are just a few reasons to convince you to spend at least one day in Hallstatt.

No time to read now? Pin it for later!

Hallstatt in one day itinerary

The views are breathtaking

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Nothing can compare with the view from the famous Hallstatt lookout point or the view from the Hallstatt Salt Mine platform.

Hallstatt wooden house view

I know that planning to visit Hallstatt in one day may sound difficult but you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the best of this little town. Don’t forget your camera home because you’ll want to photograph those cute houses, traditional stores, and the surrounding mountains.

You’ll escape the hustle and bustle of bigger cities

If you’re travelling to Hallstatt from Vienna, this town will feel like a breath of fresh air. It’s so small that you can easily walk from one end to the other in just fifteen minutes.

Also, visiting Hallstatt is a great way to discover more about the culture of Austria. Hallstatt is a well-preserved town, with incredible architecture, many traditional restaurants and friendly locals who will make sure that you’ll have an unforgettable experience.

2. The best time to visit Hallstatt

Winter in Hallstatt view

Hallstatt is a charming town, no matter the season. During the winter, the snow that covers the town and the smoking chimneys will invite you to drink a hot cup of tea in one of the traditional restaurants. During the summer, the sun glowing over the mountains will invite you to go hiking.

You can visit Hallstatt any time you want but if you’d like to avoid the hot summer days and the cold winter, I recommend visiting Hallstatt in spring or autumn.

Good to know: Hallstatt tends to get very busy during summer. For a more relaxed experience, without too many tourists, I recommend visiting it in spring, autumn or winter (avoid Christmas). One thing to keep in mind if you plan to visit Hallstatt in winter is that the salt mine and the funicular are closed.

You can visit Hallstatt as a day trip from Salzburg . You can also book online a tour from Vienna to Hallstatt .

3. Interesting facts

View over the Hallstatt Lake

Before telling you more about the perfect one-day Hallstatt itinerary, I want to share a few interesting facts about this town. When visiting a new place, it’s nice to know a little bit about its history.

  • Hallstatt has a population of only 778 people. Almost all its residents work in the tourism industry, promoting their beautiful town.
  • Hallstatt is a very small town. You can walk from one end to the other in 15 minutes.
  • A replica of Hallstatt has been built in China. You can read more about it here .
  • Hallstatt is well-known for its salt production, dating back to prehistoric times. If you want, you can even visit the salt mine.
  • Hallstatt is visited by almost 1 million people yearly. During the past few years, Hallstatt took the internet by storm, especially due to its charming look.

How to spend one day in Hallstatt

4. One day in Hallstatt – itinerary

Is one day in Hallstatt enough? Well, one day is definitely enough to catch the town’s vibe and visit its most important tourist attractions.

I recommend spending one night (preferably the one before) in Hallstatt. You’ll have more time to explore the city and you can wake up early in the morning and get a head start on the other tourists.

That being said, let’s see what you can cover in 24 hours in Hallstatt. I’m not gonna lie, it’s going to be tiring but at the end of the day, you’ll look back and remember all the incredible places you’ve visited (you’ll forget about your aching legs).

If you’re interested in a guided tour, I recommend this 2-hour guided tour in Hallstatt with a professional photographer.

Take the funicular to the salt mine and World Heritage Skywalk

View from the Hallstatt funicular train

From the town, you can take the funicular or hike (about one hour) to the salt mine and the famous World Heritage Skywalk. If you want to visit the salt mine, keep in mind that the guided tour takes 70 minutes. When we visited, we decided to use that time to explore more of Hallstatt instead.

One place you should definitely visit is the World Heritage Skywalk. This glass platform offers the best view over the entire Hallstatt town, lake, and surrounding mountains. There is no separate entrance fee to the skywalk.

View over the World Heritage Skywalk in Hallstatt - glass platform

Taking the funicular (round trip) will cost you 18 euros. For the salt mine entrance fees and opening hours, visit this website .

Good to know: If you plan to visit the salt mine, plan 2.5 hours for this attraction (funicular + salt mine + World Heritage Skywalk). If you decide not to visit the salt mine, 1.5 hours should be enough.

Alternative: take a boat ride on the lake

Boat at Hallstatt Lake

Do you want to see Hallstatt from a different angle? The best way to do that is to go on a boat tour. The tours at Hallstatt will take you to Hallstatt Bahnhst and Obertraun, another two beautiful towns. You don’t have to get off the boat, just sit back and admire the views.

The boat tour on Hallstatt Lake was definitely one of the highlights of my trip. You can book a boat tour from ATO Hallstatt Lahn. To check out the prices, click here .

Go shopping for cute souvenirs

Hallstatt local shops with souvenirs

Hallstatt is full of authentic souvenir shops. From handmade pottery, fridge magnets, home decor, and accessories, you can definitely find the perfect souvenir in Hallstatt. Just take a walk on the Old City streets and you’ll find beautiful boutique stores.

Don’t look for bargains because you won’t find them here. The souvenirs are pricey but the memories you’ll create in Hallstatt are priceless. We ended up buying a fridge magnet and a beautiful handmade bowl.

Visit the Hallstatt Ossuary

Skulls and bones at Hallstatt Ossuary

This is a really unusual place and definitely not for the faint of heart. The Hallstatt Ossuary is a small chamber where a collection of skulls and other human bones are on display.

The skulls are beautifully painted with flowers and leaves. Also, the name and profession of the deceased are inscribed on them. It’s quite spooky but definitely worth a visit.

Hallstatt is a small town, with limited burial ground. Over the years, the cemeteries started to fill and the bodies were exhumed in order to make room for other people. Due to space scarcity, those bones were taken to the Hallstatt Ossuary which is now one of the most visited tourist attractions in Hallstatt.

Find the famous lookout point

Hallstatt famous lookout point

You can’t visit Hallstatt without taking a photo from the famous lookout point. You can find it on Google Maps as “Postcard Angle”. This lookout point offers the best view towards to city but it can also be quite busy.

-> Check out other incredible viewpoints in Hallstatt .

Eat at a local restaurant

Restaurant on the lake at Hallstatt

After a full day of sightseeing, you must be really hungry. Visiting Hallstatt in one day is exhausting but the good news is that you can recharge your batteries with some delicious, local food.

Among the best restaurants in Hallstatt are Braugasthof and Brauhaus. If you’re looking for a delicious dessert, make a stop at Cafe Derbl. Here you will find tasty Austrian desserts and homemade sweets. I highly recommend trying the cream strudel with vanilla sauce.

Admire the Old Town

Hallstatt Old Town

Your day of exploring Hallstatt is getting close to the end. Take the last few hours to admire the Old Town. Visit the beautiful Marktplaz and take a few photos with the beautiful traditional homes.

5. Hallstatt day trip – budget

Let’s talk about how much money you’ll need for one day in Hallstatt. As I’ve already said, Hallstatt is an expensive town. Here is a budget breakdown for one person:

  • Accommodation (if necessary) – around 100 euros per night
  • Food – 20 euros per meal
  • Snacks & souvenirs – 10 euros
  • Entrance fees – around 30 euros
  • TOTAL = 100 + 20 x 2 +10 + 30 = 180 euros  (without transport to Hallstatt)

salzburg day trip to hallstatt

6. How to get to Hallstatt

If you’re looking for transport options to get to Hallstatt, you are in the right place. Planning a day trip to Hallstatt from Salzburg or Vienna might be challenging but I am here to help you. Here are all the transport options.

View from Hallstatt Salt Mine

Salzburg to Hallstatt

The easiest way to get from Salzburg to Hallstatt is to rent a car for one or two days (if you plan to spend one night in Hallstatt). The trip from Salzburg by car should take around one and a half hours.

Once you arrive in Hallstatt, you can choose between the three public parking areas available. If you want to be as close to the Old Town as possible, choose P1 or P2.

Guided Tour

For a hustle-free experience, book a guided tour. There are tours available for both Vienna and Salzburg and they’re super-affordable. Below are a few choices.

Guided tours from Salzburg:

  • Hallstatt half-day guided tour
  • Hallstatt and Salzkammergut guided tour
  • Hallstatt full-day guided tour

Traveling from Salzburg to Hallstatt by train is not the fastest transport option. The ride can take 2 to 3 hours, depending on the connections and you will have to change trains at Attnang-Puchheim and disembark at Obertraun.

From Obertraun, you will have to take the ferry to Hallstatt which will take another hour. Traveling by train to Hallstatt takes a lot of time and it can be tiring. Make sure to spend one night in this beautiful town and the next day you will wake up fresh for exploring.

Choosing to travel by bus from Salzburg to Hallstatt can be a little complicated. You will have to take the 150 bus from Salzburg to Bad Ischl and then take the bus 542 to Hallstatt. The ride will take about 3 hours – one way.

If you choose to travel by bus, I strongly recommend spending one night in Hallstatt.

Vienna to Hallstatt

Travelling from Vienna to Hallstatt by train takes at least 4 hours (you will also need to take the ferry from Obertraun to Hallstatt). It is a difficult and tiring trip by train.

I strongly recommend choosing a guided tour from Vienna. You won’t have to worry about transport or itinerary. Below are a few options.

Guided tours from Vienna:

  • Hallstatt day trip
  • Hallstatt, Melk and Salzburg guided tour

7. Where to stay in Hallstatt

I’ve been searching for the best accommodation in Hallstatt, for every budget. This charming town has some of the best hotels in Austria but everything comes at a price. Below are my recommendations.

Good to know: Giving the fact that Hallstatt is a small town, there are only a few hotels to choose from. Make sure you make your booking well in advance in order to find a good hotel for your budget.

  • Luxury – W & S Executive Apartment  –  excellent location, modern & spacious apartment, beautiful terrace, new furniture
  • Mid Budget – Fenix Boutique Hotel –  good location, clean & spacious rooms, breakfast included
  • Budget – Hallstatt Lakeside –  good location, spacious rooms, lake view from the garden

I hope that this guide helped you plan the perfect one-day itinerary in Hallstatt. I am sure that you will instantly fell in love with this charming Austrian town. If you’re also planning to visit Salzburg, read my awesome travel guide !

Hi, I’m not sure if taxis operate on such long distance. You can try booking a private tour maybe 🙂

I had the chance to visit Hallstatt and it was an absolutely stunning trip. I was able to do so many amazing things while I was there, like exploring the historic center, taking a boat tour on the lake, and hiking in the surrounding mountains. Loved it.

How To See Hallstatt In One Day From Salzburg: The Ultimate Guide

  • This post was last updated on August 11, 2023

Hallstatt, Austria is one of those idyllic, fairytale towns that are perfect for a day trip from Salzburg. Salzburg is the perfect base to do a day trip from, as it is only about 44 miles (71km) to Hallstatt!

Hallstatt, a UNESCO Heritage site, is located on the western shore of Hallstätter See in Austria’s Salzkammergut region.

Until the 19th century, they say that you couldn’t reach the town other than by boat or trails that run above the town in the mountains. Today, you can not drive IN the town, but you can drive through a tunnel behind the town and come out on the other side where you can find parking and walk into town.

The average high temperature in winter is 3°C (37.4 °F) and the average lowest temperature is -3 °C (26.6 °F).

Afternoon: Walk Around & Have Lunch

We walked to the Panoramablick Hallstättersee 4830 Hallstatt to get some gorgeous views of the town. Then we proceeded to walk north through the town.

Honestly, the best thing to do is to walk around and explore its small alleys and soak in the stunning views.

Visit Central Square Marktplatz

The historic Marktplatz, or market square, is the center of this town. You’ll find mostly restaurants, cafes, hotels, and souvenir shops here. It is almost car-free zone – there were a few that were coming in an out of the square.

Tips for Visiting

  • Public toilets: There are public toilets just behind the Pfarrkirche Mariä Himmelfahrt (be sure to have some coins with you!) They are also some on your right on a little side street off the main pedestrian road just after the market square (direction tourist information office). Keep your €0,50 coins for the public toilets in the historic centre.
  • Wi-Fi: There is a wi-fi hotspot on the market square.
  • Money: Make sure you have enough cash on you because many restaurants and shops don’t accept credit or debit cards.

Is it worth a day trip?

One of the best aspects is how small and quaint the town is. That means, with only one day in Hallstatt, you’ll be able to see it all! By the time we arrived, we only had half a day in the town but were still able to see everything we wanted to and more!

  • One Day in Hallstatt Itinerary: The Perfect Hallstatt Day Trip

Panoramic view of Hallstatt from the Classic Postcard Viewpoint, a must visit place on every Hallstatt itinerary

Despite its modest size, the charming Austrian village of Hallstatt isn’t short of wonderful attractions. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hallstatt is full of traditional architecture and museums, as well as a fascinating peek into salt mine history.

As it’s situated on the banks of Lake Hallstatt in the mountainous region of Salzkammergut, this dream destination offers huge appeal to nature lovers and outdoorsy types as well.

It’s perfectly possible to see the best of Hallstatt in one day as part of a wider Austria itinerary . The alpine village is a popular day trip from Salzburg and slots nicely into any Austria road trip itinerary as well. You can book a tour to Hallstatt from Salzburg or visit independently, as this itinerary is about to demonstrate.

To help you plan all the logistics of your visit, I have curated the following one day Hallstatt itinerary which covers all the practical details you’ll need as well as the best things to see during your day trip. If you have longer than one day in Hallstatt then I’ve included some tips on how you can expand your itinerary.

Morning of Your Hallstatt Itinerary

I recommend spending the morning of your Hallstatt day trip by wandering around the town center, checking out the notable attractions and beautiful viewpoints, and of course, taking tons of photos.

You can see the highlights of Hallstatt Zentrum comfortably over the course of one morning because the town is tiny and walkable. Below is a quick overview of the places you can visit during your self-guided walk.

Marktplatz Hallstatt

Dominated by a fountain and statue of the Holy Trinity, Marktplatz Hallstatt is the very center of the town and is adorned with picturesque alpine buildings that will make any photographer croon.

Spend some time roaming the quaint area, dipping into the cafes to pick up Austrian pastries, and mooching through souvenir shops.

Depending on what time you visit, the buildings may be awash with summer blooms or coated with a layer of thick snow. During the warmer months, there are often concerts and religious events held in the marketplace while come winter, it hosts the annual Christmas Market.

Colorful houses at Marktplatz Hallstatt

Evangelisches Pfarramt

There are a couple of churches in town that you will spot while exploring on foot during your day trip to Hallstatt. A relic of the late 18th century, Evangelisches Pfarramt is an iconic element of the Hallstatt skyline and affords a lovely view of the lake from the tower.

Colorful houses and the Evangelisches Pfarramt in Hallstatt

Michaelskapelle, Beinhaus & Ossuary

The chapel and cemetery of Michaelskapelle sit just to the north of the village. Inside the church, you can see the Hallstatt ossuary, a collection of hundreds upon thousands of human skulls and bones.

In a touching sentiment, the skulls are inscribed with the name of the deceased, their year of passing, and intricate floral paintings.

If you want to visit the ossuary then the admission cost is €1.50. It’s open to tourists from Wednesday to Sunday, 10 am – 5 pm.

Classic Postcard Viewpoint

You’ll agree that everywhere you look in Hallstatt is worth stopping to snap a photo, but it’s still worth visiting one or two of the official viewpoints.

Walk less than two minutes north of the churchyard and you will find the point marked as ‘Aussichtspunkt Hallstatt’ on Google Maps, or ‘classic viewpoint.’ From here you will get a striking shot of the village within its mountain setting, the perfect memento from your day trip to Hallstatt.

Hallstatt Waterfall

It might surprise you to hear that there is a waterfall in the heart of Hallstatt! It might not quite rival the massive, tropical waterfalls of Bali and the Philippines, but it gets pretty close and offers up some fantastic photography opportunities.

The trail starts not far from Marktplatz and it takes a pleasant 20 minutes to reach the attraction.

Hallstatt Waterfall

Small Island

Head south of the village to Small Island, which floats a few meters off the lakeside. The teeny island is connected to the mainland by an equally teeny bridge and once you cross over you’ll have a clear view of the village.

It takes 15 minutes to walk to Small Island from Marktplatz, so you might want to make this either your first stop or last stop of the morning on your Hallstatt itinerary.

Afternoon of Your Hallstatt Itinerary

Salzbergwerk hallstatt.

For the afternoon of your one day in Hallstatt, you can head to one of the town’s most interesting attractions, the salt mine. With a 7,000-year history, the mine is one of the oldest of its kind in the world.

The mine is located higher up in the mountains and you basically have two options to get there.

You can ride the Salzbergbahn funicular from the town center (near the P2 parking lot) which takes a few minutes and delivers you a 10-15 minute walk from the mine entrance. The cost is €22 for a return or €12 one way.

You can also purchase a combo ticket for the funicular and the salt mine, it costs €40 per person.

Alternatively, you can opt to hike up for free. This takes around 1-1.5 hours which will definitely lengthen your Hallstatt itinerary. The route itself is well-marked and easy to follow, however, it’s pretty steep, so be prepared with proper shoes and lots of water.

If you don’t use the funicular at all, then the entrance to the salt mines only costs €27 per person. In this case, you’ll need to calculate some extra time for hiking down as well (it takes around 45-60 minutes).

The mine is only accessible via a guided tour and comprises around 2 km (1.2 miles) of walking and the rest is via mine train. The tour itself takes around 70-80 minutes and they depart every 30 minutes between 9 am – 4 pm. You need to be there 30 minutes prior to the start time.

It’s important to wear sturdy shoes and warm clothing as the temperature below ground averages 8°C (46°F). You’ll get a protective jacket and trousers prior to the tour that you’ll need to put on top of your regular clothes.

Therefore even if you’re visiting in the heat of the summer, it’s best to wear jeans and t-shirts rather than dresses or skirts (or at least have a change of clothes in your backpack for the tour).

Salt mines at Salzbergwerk Hallstatt

Hallstatt Skywalk

Warm up after your mine tour at one of the most scenic stops of your one day Hallstatt itinerary. The Hallstatt Skywalk is an observation deck that juts out 350 meters (1,148 feet) above the town and grants an uninterrupted view of the lofty ranges.

There is no entrance fee to visit the viewpoint so if you’re not fussed about the mine tour I’d still recommend popping up to take the sights in.

Girl in a yellow skirt at Hallstatt Skywalk

Restaurant Rudolfsturm

Either for lunch or as an afternoon treat, you can pay a visit to this scenic cafe which has a terrace that overlooks the lake and mountains. It’s located right next to the Hallstatt Skywalk so you can easily visit after taking in the scenic views.

If you have a sweet tooth, try their apple strudel – it’s seriously one of the best I’ve ever eaten!

Evening of Your Hallstatt Itinerary

Hike to waldbachstrub waterfall or glacier garden.

Conclude the perfect one day Hallstatt itinerary with a leisurely hike that gives you a final opportunity to experience the majestic nature. There are two suggestions that are located close to one another in the Echern Valley of Hallstatt: Waldbachstrub Waterfall or Glacier Garden.

If you don’t want to move your car or you arrived with a different kind of transport, you can start both hikes from Hallstatt Parking P2. From there, you have multiple options to start your hike: you can either take Echerntalweg, Kohlstattweg then Malerweg, or cross the river and walk along Malerweg until you reach Parkplatz Echerntal.

Alternatively, if you’re running short on time or you don’t want to hike that much, you can drive your car to Parkplatz Echerntal as well.

Right after passing by the parking lot, you’ll be presented with a fork. You can take the paved road on the left which will lead you to the Glacier Garden (Gletschergarten).

This is a cluster of unique rocks, landforms, fairy pools, and streams that formed during the last Ice Age as the glacier in the gorge receded. This natural wonder is accessible by following the signs for Simonyhütte and the Wiesberghaus.

If you take the gravel road on the right, you’ll be heading in the direction of Waldbachstrub Waterfall. Just a heads up: although the trail is signposted, none of the signs actually say the name of the waterfall so it’s quite easy to get lost. You will come across some forks during the trail, when in doubt, always take the right one!

Waldbachstrub waterfall Hallstatt

To be completely transparent, we didn’t manage to find the waterfall during our hike. At the third or fourth fork, we accidentally took the wrong turn and ended up going up to the Glacier Garden.

If we would have taken the right turn and crossed the little stream, we would have found the waterfall within 15 minutes. But unfortunately, we took the left and after climbing up lots of stairs, we found ourselves at the Glacier Garden. Not complaining though as it was really beautiful, but it would have been easier to just take the paved road from the parking lot if I would have wanted to come here.

Anyways, reaching the Glacier Garden from the Echerntal parking lot takes around 30 minutes while hiking to Waldbachstrub Waterfall takes around 40-45 minutes.

Unless you skip some of the earlier activities on the itinerary, you will need to choose one hiking option. However, if you have longer than one day in Hallstatt then I highly recommend you tackle both of these hikes.

Glacier Garden in Hallstatt, Austria

Restaurant am See

After an exhausting but (hopefully) wonderful day exploring Hallstatt, it’s finally time to sit down and satiate your hunger! You might have already scouted out a place to eat during your stroll around Hallstatt Zentrum but if not then I suggest heading to Restaurant am See.

Tables spread out over the lakeside terrace providing enchanting panoramic views as you eat. The menu comprises typical Austrian fare, freshly caught fish, and a hearty mix of beers, wines, and spirits.

Useful Info for Visiting Hallstatt

How to get to hallstatt.

Salzburg is the most convenient springboard for your Hallstatt day trip and features the closest international airport. If you rent a car then the scenic drive from Salzburg to Hallstatt will take 1-1.5 hours to complete.

Arrive as early as possible to secure parking in town at one of the two central parking lots, especially during summer, public holidays, and weekends. Hallstatt is very popular among tourists and it’s not rare that the parking lots fill up before 10 am.

Taking the public bus or train from Salzburg takes longer so you will definitely need to book a hotel in town to make this Hallstatt itinerary worthwhile. Buses and trains both take around 3 hours each way and require a couple of changes.

Bus number 150 departs from Salzburg Hofwirt (C) and takes you as far as Bad Ischl Bahnhof. From here you will need to switch to the 542 bus and then again to the 543 at Gosaumühle.

Trains depart from Salzburg Hbf with a change at Attnang-Puchheim before reaching the terminal in Obertraun on the eastern side of the lake. At this point, you will need to hop on a ferry across the lake to reach Hallstatt.

Best time to visit Hallstatt

Defined by four distinct seasons, the village is a year-round destination and the best time to plan your day trip to Hallstatt depends on your personal preferences.

Peak season is during the summer months of July/August, this is when the town sees the most crowds and the hottest temperatures.

In total contrast, the town is likely to experience snow during the winter months of November through February when the temperature can drop to 0°C (32°F). This makes it a popular destination for winter sports enthusiasts and the city bursts into a ski resort.

Overall, the late spring and autumn months are the most pleasant time to visit when the scenery is alive with summer flowers or leafy autumn foliage. Temperatures lingering around 15-19°C (59-62°F) make these times of year the perfect time to include some light hiking in your Hallstatt itinerary.

How to get around Hallstatt

Once you reach Hallstatt you can easily explore the village on foot as it’s so tiny. Most of the attractions on my itinerary are within walking distance so I recommend parking your car for the duration of your one day in Hallstatt. In fact, you’ll have to – the town center is a car-free zone!

All the places on this Hallstatt itinerary are accessible by foot, however, some of them are located higher up in the mountain. While it’s totally possible to hike up there, you might want to take advantage of the funicular that transports you to the top within minutes.

Where to stay in Hallstatt

Hallstatt is a small place and hotel options are quite limited (and expensive). The following three places are my recommendations for where to stay in the center of town.

Make sure to book in advance to secure your accommodation, especially if you plan your Hallstatt itinerary during summer!

Hallstatt Hideaway

LUXURY – Hallstatt Hideaway

This adults-only resort is located right on the waterfront and comprises a deluxe portfolio of suites that offer lake views. Modern interiors feature a rustic twist and the most decadent options come with additional features ranging from private patios to private spa pools.

Heritage Hotel Hallstatt

MID-RANGE – Heritage Hotel Hallstatt

All rooms and suites at this 4-star hotel provide lake views and are equipped with a private bathroom, coffee maker, and homely touches. The accommodation spans three buildings and there is also a restaurant and sauna on site.

Gasthof Bergfried

BUDGET – Gasthof Bergfried

This centrally located guest house features compact rooms with en suite bathrooms with the option to upgrade to a balcony suite. The property offers a shared relaxation area with a spa and sauna.

Alternatively, if you have a car, you might want to stay a little further out of town in one of the surrounding hamlets. One of the best options is Obertraun, from where you can reach Hallstatt within 10 minutes by car or you can also take advantage of the ferry.

We stayed at Haus Salzkammergut on our second visit to Hallstatt and absolutely loved everything about the hotel! Great location, amazing views from the balcony, lovely owners, cute doggie, and delicious breakfast. I can only recommend this place!

In case the hotel is full or you’re looking for something else, you can check all the accommodation options in Obertraun here .

It offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, history, and culture.

Therefore it is one of the most visited places in Austria , apart from Vienna, Salzburg, and Innsbruck.

It’s an ideal spot for a memorable day trip, and I’m here to guide you through planning an unforgettable experience.

Key Takeaways: Hallstatt Day Trip at a Glance

Now, let’s dive into the details of planning your unforgettable day trip from Salzburg to Hallstatt.

Book a day trip from Salzburg to Hallstatt

Why Choose A Day Trip From Salzburg To Hallstatt?

historic market place in Hallstatt with fountain and colorful houses

Hallstatt’s unique charm lies in its stunning lakeside setting and rich cultural heritage.

From the iconic Hallstatt Lake to the ancient salt mines, there’s a sense of wonder in every corner.

Hallstatt is popular for a variety of reasons:

  • Scenic Beauty : Nestled between a serene lake and towering mountains.
  • Cultural Heritage : Home to historical landmarks like the World Heritage Museum.
  • Unique Activities : From exploring salt mines to leisurely boat rides.

Please remember : While exploring Hallstatt, it’s important to respect the privacy of local residents.

It’s a living village, not an open-air museum. Avoid entering private gardens or opening doors without permission.

Getting to Hallstatt from Salzburg

Hallstatt in Austria at Hallstätter See and Austrian Alps

Hallstatt is part of the Salzkammergut, a lake district, and about 45 miles southeast of Salzburg city.

While you can drive to Hallstatt by car, or take the train, we recommend booking a guided tour based on our experience.

Driving to Hallstatt takes approximately 1 and a half hours, and since the village is car-free, you’ll have to park outside.

Parking spaces are limited and often fully booked.

You can also opt for the train to Hallstatt, but it requires changing trains at Attnang-Puchheim or Bad Ischl.

You can check the train tables at the Austrian railway website Oebb .

To be honest, I find it a bit confusing (and I’m Austrian). I always check the options at Trainline . (You get the tickets for the same price.)

Upon arrival, you’ll find yourself on the opposite side of the lake.

A ferry ride is necessary to reach the village. While the ferry offers scenic views, it adds time to your journey.

Expect about 2 and a half to 3 hours one way to reach Hallstatt.

That’s why we suggest taking a guided day trip or a half-day tour. Simply board the bus and enjoy a hassle-free visit to Hallstatt.

Book a half-day trip from Salzburg to Hallstatt

Traveling by Rental Car

  • Provider : DiscoverCars
  • Advantages : Flexibility, scenic drives
  • Consideration : Limited parking availability
  • Don’t forget : getting a Vignette (Austrian highway toll) and read our guide about driving in Austria

Taking the Train and Ferry

  • Booking : Trainline for schedules and tickets
  • Route : Salzburg to Attnang-Puchheim, then to Hallstatt
  • Ferry Connection : From the train station, take a ferry across the lake to reach Hallstatt village (pay in cash only)
  • Advantages : Scenic views, local interactions

Both methods of travel have their unique advantages.

Guided Day Trip to Hallstatt

However, for those staying in Salzburg and wanting to visit Hallstatt without the hassle of coordinating different modes of transportation, I highly recommend booking a tour from Salzburg.

It offers a stress-free experience, allowing you to enjoy the journey and the destination without any transportation worries.

Things To Do In Hallstatt

stunning view over Hallstatt with traditional wooden house in Austria

While the center of Hallstatt in the Salzkammergut is small, there are still plenty of things to do.

From exploring the streets of its historic center to indulging in local culinary delights, there’s something for everyone in this picturesque lakeside village.

After exploring the lakeside village, you can visit the ancient salt mines , where you can delve into the town’s rich mining history.

You can also plan a trip to the majestic Dachstein Mountain , offering breathtaking views and a chance to experience the natural landscape that surrounds Hallstatt.

These excursions provide a perfect blend of history and nature, making your visit to Hallstatt even more memorable.

Exploring the Historic Center of Hallstatt

The heart of Hallstatt is its historic center surrounding the market square.

It’s a place where time seems to stand still amidst its centuries-old buildings and quaint alleyways.

It’s here that you will find the true essence of Austrian charm.

Hallstatt, with a history spanning over 7,000 years, is also a place of great historical significance.

Spectacular archaeological finds, particularly from the Hallstatt cemetery, are so significant that an entire cultural era, the Hallstatt Culture (850 – 500 B.C.), was named after this location.

The highlights are the following:

  • Traditional Austrian Houses : Wander through the lanes lined with picturesque houses, showcasing traditional Austrian architecture. Their charming, partly wooden facades and flower-filled balconies are stunning.
  • Incredible Views : Don’t miss the opportunity to capture the panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains like the Dachstein mountain.
  • Local Shops and Cafes : The historic center is filled with quaint shops, cozy cafes, and restaurants. It’s perfect for enjoying a leisurely break and soaking in the atmosphere.
  • Charnel House (Beinhaus) : Located in the small St. Michael’s Chapel, this unique site houses over 600 painted skulls. It’s a tradition stemming from the limited space in the local cemetery.
  • Hallstatt Cemetery : This beautifully maintained cemetery offers not only a serene atmosphere but also stunning views over the lake.
  • World Heritage Museum: The museum has an exhibition with artifacts from the Stone Age to the present

As you stroll through the historic center, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a living museum, rich in history and beauty.

It’s a must-visit part of your Hallstatt day trip.

Lunch in Hallstatt: Local Delicacies to Try

Indulge in local Austrian cuisine at one of Hallstatt’s cozy restaurants.

The fresh lake trout is a must-try, perfectly paired with a view of the lake. If you’re vegetarian or vegan, like I am, you can enjoy Kässpätzle.

There are a few restaurants in the center. Some, like the Seehotel Grüner Baum , offer lake views.

Other Tips For Your Day In Hallstatt

The highlights to consider are the following:

Salzwelten and the Skywalk

Just outside Hallstatt, you can visit the Salzwelten, the world’s oldest salt mine.

Besides exploring the salt mines you can enjoy breathtaking views from the Skywalk.

This platform is perched high above the lake, offering a panoramic vista of Hallstatt and its surroundings.

Dachstein Mountain and the 5 Fingers Viewpoint

You can visit the Dachstein mountain for stunning alpine scenery.

The highlight is the 5 Fingers viewing platform. It extends out over a cliff, providing one of Austria’s most spectacular views.

This spot allows for an unforgettable panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

Accommodation Options: If You Choose to Stay

Hallstatt offers a range of accommodations for those wishing to extend their stay.

From luxury hotels to cozy guesthouses, there’s a perfect place for every budget.

If you have time, I highly recommend planning a night in Hallstatt.

Local Customs and Etiquette

Understanding and respecting local customs and etiquette in Hallstatt enriches the travel experience.

Engage with locals respectfully and embrace the cultural nuances.

Please, don’t open any garden gates and step into houses. I saw this while strolling around. People live there. It’s not an open-air museum.

Is Hallstatt worth it?

Yes, it’s a beautiful place. And it’s one of those places you need to see, like Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany.

But: After spending time in Hallstatt once, I wouldn’t go there again. Simply because it is crowded like crazy.

salzburg day trip to hallstatt

One day in Hallstatt is the perfect amount of time to discover the rich heritage, embrace the surrounding nature and head out onto the lake. This alpine village is a popular day trip from Salzburg and makes the perfect stop on a longer tour of Austria. If you want to extend your stay, you will find some suggestions for expanding this Halstatt itinerary at the end.

Situated on the banks of Lake Hallstatt in Austria’s stunning Salzkammergut region, the quaint village of Hallstatt may initially seem small, but this UNESCO Heritage site is packed full of charm.

With its pastel houses, cobblestone streets, and flower-filled balconies, Hallstatt feels like a village that has been plucked straight out of a fairytale.

How Many Days in Hallstatt?

If you are planning a trip to Austria , you may be wondering how many days to spend in Hallstatt. The answer to this question depends on a few factors, when you are visiting and what you want to see and do during your visit.

Seeing Hallstatt in one day is the perfect amount of time to visit the highlights. It will be a day jam-packed with activities, but you’ll have plenty of time to slow down to sample some apple strudel and take a leisurely stroll along the lake’s shores.

If you have two days, there are several nearby attractions that you couldn’t quite fit into a Hallstatt day trip. Whilst you could easily spend 2 days exploring the village itself at a relaxed pace, there is so much to do in the surrounding Salzkammergut region that you won’t want to miss.

During the winter months, Hallstatt transforms into a bustling ski resort. With 200km of pistes in the surrounding area and free ski buses, it is a popular spot for both beginners and intermediate skiers and snowboarders. If you are visiting with snowsports in mind, you will want to book at least 7 days to make the most of this winter wonderland.

Getting To & Around Hallstatt

The remote tranquillity of Hallstatt may sound ideal, but it comes with its own challenges. Reaching this picturesque village can be challenging; if you don’t have access to a vehicle, it can take a fair few hours.

Salzburg is the most popular starting point when trying to get to Hallstatt. You can reach Salzburg by train, bus or flight to Salzburg Airport. From there, you have several options for reaching Hallstatt.

The most efficient way is to hire a car. The scenic drive to Hallstatt from Salzburg takes 1-1.5 hours and provides the most flexibility. You can browse car rental options here.

Hallstatt is a car-free village, with two car parks on the outskirts for visitors. During the summer months, these car parks fill up quickly, often before 10 am. Try to arrive in Hallstatt as early as possible to make sure you secure a space for the day.

If you are relying on buses or trains, the journey from Salzburg to Hallstatt can take up to 3 hours, with several changes and even a ferry. It is doable, but to make the most out of this Hallstatt itinerary, booking accommodation and staying overnight in Hallstatt itself would give you more time to explore at your own pace.

The train departs from Salzburg Hbf and requires one change at Attnang-Puchheim before you reach Obertraun on the eastern side of Lake Hallstatt. Then, you will have to take a ferry across the lake to reach the village of Hallstatt.

If you are travelling by bus, there are some coaches you can take, however, they also require changes. Unusually, the bus is actually slightly faster than the train and can be cheaper, so if you are relying on public transport, this may be your best option. You can view train & bus schedules here.

As a car-free village, once you have arrived, you will spend the majority of your day exploring on foot. Hallstatt is a small village; you could walk from one end to the other in less than 15 minutes and all the attractions are easily reached from the centre.

Hallstatt Lake

1 Day in Hallstatt Itinerary

Alongside the rich history, there is plenty to see and do in this beautiful lakeside village, from a tour of the salt mines to the Hallstatt Skywalk and the intricately painted skulls in St Michaels Chapel. Use this itinerary to make the most out of your visit to this fairytale village.

Market Square

The central hive of activity, Market Square, is the ideal place to begin on your day trip to Hallstatt.

Walk along the shore of the lake from the car park or the bus stop until you reach the unmissable fountain and statue of the holy trinity. Surrounded by traditional alpine chalet-style buildings, take a moment to cast your eyes up to the wooden window shuts, colourful balconies and window boxes in full bloom.

This is the perfect place to pick up a traditional Austrian pastry for breakfast, meander through the souvenir shops and gather some picnic goodies to keep you going for the rest of the day. If you are visiting during the winter months, you’ll find a bustling Christmas market in Market Square from the 8th of December.

Hallstatt Square

St Michaels Chapel & Hallstatt Ossuary

The Hallstatt ossuary, also known as the Bone House, is a hidden gem within the village. It is a small chapel that houses intricately thousands of decorated human skulls and bones, showcasing a longstanding tradition due to limited burial space in Hallstatt.

The ossuary offers a glimpse into the local customs and cultural practices surrounding death and remembrance. In a touching sentiment, the beautifully arranged skulls and bones are adorned with painted designs, flowers, and inscriptions.

Postcard View / Aussichtspunkt Hallstatt

Less than 2 minutes from the churchyard, you’ll find one of the most iconic viewpoints of the village. Although you’ll most likely be snapping photos around every corner, it is worth walking up to this viewpoint, also called ‘Classic Viewpoint’ on Google Maps.

This is the perfect place to capture the village, with the church and colourful buildings in the foreground and the towering mountains behind. Snapping a photo here is one of the best things to do in Hallstatt.

Saltzwelten Museum

After getting a feel for the village, it’s time to discover the ancient mining techniques and the importance of salt in Hallstatt’s development. The salt mines of Hallstatt hold a fascinating history and have played a vital role in shaping the region’s heritage.

The name Hallstatt literally translates to ‘Place of salt’. Dating back over 7,000 years, these mines are among the oldest in the world and are well worth visiting as part of your Hallstatt itinerary.

To reach the salt mines, you have two options. You can take the Salzbergbahn funicular from beside the P2 parking area or hike up the hill. The funicular takes just a couple of minutes but costs €20 for a return, €10 one way. You will still have to walk 10-15 minutes to the entrance of the mines, but you won’t need to hike up any hills.

If you are relatively fit and enjoy hiking, the walk up to the mines takes around 1hr. The walk is steep, so if you opt to take to the trail, make sure you have appropriate footwear and plenty of water.

For the best of both worlds, you could take the funicular up the hill, explore the mines, then hike back down in around 45 minutes.

To visit the mines, you will need to book one of the guided tours. The tour is a mix of walking and riding on the mine train, it takes between 70-80 minutes, and they depart frequently throughout the day. The air temperature underground is much colder than above ground, so even during the summer months, make sure to pack warm clothes.

Jackets and protective trousers are provided. The tour is a fascinating look into the history of the region and the process of salt mining, well worth doing as part of your itinerary.

Entrance to Hallstatt Salt Mine

Hallstatt Skywalk

Before heading back down into the village, the Skywalk is an unmissable viewpoint offering panoramic views of Lake Hallstatt and the surrounding Austrian Alps. The platform juts out from the rock, 350m above the village of Hallstatt, allowing visitors to take in the stunning Alpine scenery, including the tranquil Hallstätter See and the majestic Dachstein mountains.

Entry to the viewing platform is free, so even if you don’t want to visit the ancient salt mines, it is worth climbing up the hill or taking the funicular to take in the incredible views.

Beside the Skywalk, you will find Restaurant Rudolfsturm. If you are feeling peckish, this is a great spot to grab a bite to eat with the added bonus of the incredible views.

View from Hallstatt Skywalk

Lake Cruise

If you have time, the perfect way to round off your one day in Hallstatt is by taking a boat trip on the crystal clear alpine lake. Although the sun doesn’t set until much later during the summer months, the golden light of the late afternoon is beautiful, so this is the ideal time to head out onto the water.

Boarding a vessel of your choice from the lakeside promenade, you can embark on a leisurely journey across crystal-clear waters, surrounded by majestic mountains and charming lakeside villages. You can either take a lake cruise or choose to captain your own swan pedalo, row boat or e-boat.

Hallstatt may be small, but there are plenty of options when it comes to dining out.

For a traditional inn serving cosy homemade Austrian cuisines such as Wiener Schnitzel and hearty stews, try Gasthof Zauner in the heart of the village.

If you want something a little more romantic, try the lakeside hotel – Seehotel Grüner Baum. They offer a diverse menu, including traditional Austrian dishes and fresh seafood.

Have 2 Days in Hallstatt?

If one day in Hallstatt isn’t enough, you may want to extend your stay to explore more of the beautiful surroundings at your own pace. If you have accommodation in the area, there is plenty to see and do so if you can, why not spend 2 days in Hallstatt.

Dachstein Giant Ice Cave

A short drive up into the belly of the mountains, and you will arrive at the Dachstein Ice Caves. This extraordinary cave system is sure to captivate you with its stunning ice formations and surreal beauty.

Inside the cave, witness gigantic ice sculptures, frozen waterfalls, and sparkling ice crystals that create a mesmerizing underground world. Guided tours whisk you through the icy corridors, revealing awe-inspiring sights and intriguing insights about the cave’s formation.

The trip to the ice caves is often combined with the ‘5 fingers’ viewpoint. If you only want to visit one viewpoint and can’t decide between the Skywalk and the 5 Fingers, this one is definitely the most impressive of the two.

Perched on a cliff edge overlooking Lake Hallstatt, the platform consists of five protruding fingers, providing breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and the lake below. Each finger offers a unique perspective, allowing you to feel suspended in the air and marvel at the sheer beauty of the landscape.

Day Hikes

If you want to get out into nature and take in views only accessible on foot, then you’ll want to spend your second day in Hallstatt out exploring some of the endless hiking trails.

Depending on your fitness level and experience, there are hundreds of paths you can take directly from the village itself, but here are a few suggestions to get you started.

For a moderate day hike leading to another breathtaking viewpoint, head out onto the Echern Valley (Echernwand) trail. The trail leads to the Echernwand viewpoint, offering panoramic views of the Hallstatt region. The hike is approximately 10 kilometres as a round trip and takes around 3-4 hours to complete.

Another hike of a similar length is the circular trail around Gosausee Lake. This smaller, picturesque alpine lake is renowned for its stunning beauty.

Surrounded by towering mountains and lush green meadows, the crystal-clear waters of Gosausee reflect the awe-inspiring scenery. The hike takes between 3-4 hours to complete and is around 10km.

If you want to take a hike after visiting the ice caves, there are several trails to discover around the Dachstein Glacier. The Dachstein Circular Path is a popular hiking trail that loops around the Dachstein Glacier plateau.

The trail offers mesmerizing panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, valleys, and the glacier itself. It’s a moderate hike with well-marked paths, covering a distance of approximately 7 kilometres.

Salzburg to Hallstatt day trip

If you’re heading to Salzburg, you’re not far from the beautiful village of Hallstatt, a picturesque village in the Austrian Alps. A Salzburg to Hallstatt day trip is a beautiful, easy drive and definitely worth the trip.

Read on for everything you need to know to plan your Salzburg to Hallstatt day trip.

The Alpine village of Lake Hallstatt.

About Hallstatt, Austria

Nestled in the stunning Salzkammergut region of Austria, Hallstatt dates back over 7,000 years, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited places on the continent.

Hallstatt’s fame hinges on its long history as a salt mining hub. The wealth generated from salt mining led to a thriving community and the development of a unique Iron Age culture. Visitors can still visit the salt mine, Salzwelten Hallstatt , known as the oldest salt mine in the world.

Is Hallstatt worth a day trip?

Hallstatt is definitely worth a day trip if you’ll be in Salzburg and have a day to spare. The drive takes you through some of the prettiest countryside in Austria, and the village itself lends to beautiful views of Austrian architecture, an Alpine lake, and the surrounding Austrian Alps.

How to get from Salzburg to Hallstatt

By Car: Renting a car offers flexibility and the opportunity explore at your own pace. From Salzburg, head south on the A1 Autobahn, then take the exit for Bad Ischl. From there, follow signs to Hallstatt. It’s an easy, scenic drive.

By Train: The train journey is equally picturesque. Take a train from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof to Attnang-Puchheim. Then, transfer to the train bound for Hallstatt. The Hallstatt station is situated just across Lake Hallstatt, and you can reach the village center via a short (and scenic!) ferry ride (note: the ferry only accepts cash!)

By Bus: Several bus companies offer direct routes from Salzburg to Hallstatt. It’s a convenient option, allowing you to sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenery.

The best time to visit Hallstatt

Choosing the best time to visit Hallstatt is a matter of personal preference and what kind of experience you’re looking for, with each season offering distinct advantages.

Spring (April to June): Spring in Hallstatt means blooming flowers, some rain, and snow-capped Alps in the distance. This season offers mild temperatures, making it ideal for hiking and exploring without the summer crowds.

Summer (July to August): Summer is Hallstatt’s peak tourist season; I would avoid it if possible. However, with long daylight hours and warm weather, it’s ideal for outdoor activities like hiking and boat rides on Lake Hallstatt. However, be prepared for large crowds and higher prices during this time.

Autumn (September to November): If you prefer a more relaxing experience while still enjoying beautiful weather, autumn is an excellent choice. This is when I visited and as you can see, the weather was beautiful and we had the whole village nearly to ourselves.

Winter (December to March): Hallstatt in winter is a snow-covered wonderland. Winter enthusiasts can also enjoy skiing and snowshoeing in the nearby Dachstein Alps. Keep in mind some shops, restaurants and experiences may be closed for the off-season.

Things to do in Hallstatt

From checking out the sights to activities for history lovers, there is plenty to do in Hallstatt during a day trip. Here are a few of the highlights:

Explore the medieval city center

Give yourself time to explore Hallstatt’s central square known as the Marktplatz . The Marktplatz dates back to Hallstatt’s medieval dates, when it was the epicenter of the center for trade and cultural events. Today, you can find art, souvenirs, and wine/specialty foods, such as at the shop above, in and around the central square.

salzburg day trip to hallstatt

See incredible views

To get a better view of the village and surrounding landscape, take a boat ride on the lake , with a group or rent a boat to explore at your own pace.

You can also find incredible views of the village from the Hallstatt Skywalk . To reach this viewpoint overlooking Hallstatt, follow these steps: From the village center, head toward the Salzbergbahn funicular station, which is easily accessible by foot. Purchase a ticket for the funicular, which will take you up to the viewpoint. The ride itself is a scenic experience. Once at the top, follow the well-marked path that leads you to the viewpoint. Along the way, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of Hallstatt and its surrounding landscape.

Hallstatt cemetery

Hang out at the cemetery (yes, really)

Hallstatt cemetery , located high above the village, is a peaceful resting place with a long history. Space is limited in this 12th century graveyard, so the remains of many others are located in the nearby ossuary. There, over a thousand skulls are neatly stacked, with 610 hand painted.

Get a bite to eat…or don’t!

In terms of dining, I’m going to be honest: Hallstatt is not a culinary mecca. For an authentic Austrian meal, check out Gasthaus Wes’n in Bad Ischl, a small village in Austria, on your way to or from Hallstatt. Our meals were outstanding. You can find more information on Gasthaus Wes’n here .

Origins of the settlement.

Traces of human presence in Hallstatt date back to 12,000 BC, with a pierced cave bear bone as the oldest artifact. The actual settlement began in the Neolithic period, around 5000 BC.

The white gold - salt

The region is famous for its salt production, which dates back to around 2000 BC. With the beginning of salt mining around 1500 BC, Hallstatt became home to the oldest salt mine in the world.

Celtic and Roman influences

The Celts arrived in the region around 400 BC and a devastating landslide destroyed the Salzberg valley. The Romans later took control and continued salt mining.

Medieval and modern developments

A small Romanesque church was mentioned in the 12th century, and Duke Albrecht of Austria erected a defense tower to protect the high valley in 1284.

The "man in the salt"

A sensational find was made in 1734 when the preserved body of a prehistoric miner was discovered.

UNESCO World Heritage status

The Hallstatt-Dachstein/Salzkammergut cultural landscape was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in December 1997, placing the region under global protection.

Day Trip from Salzburg to Hallstatt cover photo

Hallstatt left a deep impression on us when we went for the first time. We were doing some research on the places we could visit outside of Salzburg and came across this gem in the Salzkammergut region, exactly where we were headed to.

We were going to hike Dachstein , and Hallstatt was the perfect place to make a side trip. It looks magical and it was easy to understand why once we arrived. Although we did not get the perfect weather, we had lots of fun exploring this short stretch of a town and its hidden back alleys.

To find out how you can do a day trip from Salzburg to Hallstatt, be sure to read on for our best tips. Make use of the contents table to skip to the parts you want to know most about!

Salzburg occupies a great location in Austria.

It sits right beside the border with Germany and thus is in close proximity with many interesting cities, such as Munich or Dresden in Germany, or Austria’s own alpine heaven Innsbruck.

Although there are lots of day trip options (check out our report on a Vienna to Salzburg day trip ), on this day we chose to make a day trip from Salzburg to Hallstatt village instead, being inspired by the huge amount of beautiful photos of this picturesque fairytale small town.

The transport system in Austria is really good, so we knew that we could make it here pretty easily, and we really wanted to pass by the amazing countryside and lake towns many have told us about before.

We made this guide so that you can enjoy Hallstatt too, and get the nitty gritty details on how to get there.

Day trip from Salzburg to Hallstatt View of Clock Tower

Make sure to get to know a bit more about this magical place before you travel there!

This small town called Hallstatt is located about 1.5 hours drive from Salzburg, or about 3 hours if you are coming from Vienna.

From prehistoric times, it has been a site for the production of salt, and made the town a wealthy one.

Today though, it is best known for its amazing surroundings as part of the Salzkammergut region, the stunning views and the oldest salt mine in the world.

Not forgetting the fact that you will also get a chance to visit a UNESCO World Heritage location!

Lying right beside the crazy gorgeous Hallstatt Lake, it is favourable for day trippers who can also squeeze in time on the Dachstein massif to enjoy sweeping views over Hallstatt and the nearby Alps.

The weather in Hallstatt varies greatly throughout the year.

Hallstatt in summer or during June to August period, the temperature goes up to the mid twenties.

In winter time, it is at its driest and snow sets upon the tiny town, and this is the time when Hallstatt transforms into a magical Christmas town, completed with snow and festive decorations.

Whichever climate or season you prefer to visit, you should bear in mind that in recent years, Hallstatt has become incredibly popular.

It is packed with visitors who wants to get a piece of it, which also means higher prices around Hallstatt.

If you prefer a less crowded experience, our advice is to visit Hallsttt during March to May (you might be able to catch an Easter parade, performed by students)

Another choice is to choose September to October, though it does fill up pretty speedily on the weekends too.

When we visited in early September, the crowds were manageable but it could also be due to the light drizzle.

Whenever you decide to visit, just set a lower expectation regarding the crowds and focus more on getting the most of your trip, which are the gorgeous views!

Tip: Before visiting Hallstatt, we strongly recommend that you check the opening hours of the attractions you wish to visit.  For example, the Salt Mines could close for maintenance, so it is best to check on their website before planning your trip.

Getting to Hallstatt from Salzburg

Since we are talking about a day trip from Salzburg, we will show you the ways to reach Hallstatt from here.

What is the distance from Hallstatt to Salzburg or vice versa? How far is Hallstatt from Salzburg? Is it difficult to get there?

We have heard some people comment that they are unsure how to get to Hallstatt, or debate about what is the best way to get to Hallstatt, or simply at a loss about the options available to them.

So to take the guesswork out, we have put together some detailed information below, and you should get there pretty easily after reading it.

salzburg day trip to hallstatt

Getting to Hallstatt from Salzburg by public transport is pretty easy, and may seem a bit confusing to some if you have read some of the sites out there.

We are here to help you get over this hump.

salzburg-to-hallstatt-by-bus-directions

Using the bus service is a great way to visit Hallstatt, and along the way you will be treated to marvellous vistas of the Austrian countryside.

This is also the best option in our opinion as the journey is slightly faster than the train option (but there are exceptions, such as bad traffic).

It is also cheaper and sends you directly to Hallstatt, versus the train route where you alight across the lake and will need to transfer to the ferry.

From Salzburg Hauptbahnhof, which is the main train station of Salzburg, look out for the bus terminal right in front of it.

In all, you will need to take 3 different bus services and 2 hours 15 minutes to reach Hallstatt, but don’t be shocked!

The transfers are quick and painless, so no problem even if you have some luggage or bags with you.

  • At the Salzburg bus station, Locate Bay F, and take the bus 150 service
  • The cost is $14.60 per person and this can be purchased on board the bus
  • At times, there may also be staff standing outside of the bus to simplify the process of buying tickets
  • Take note you will only need to purchase tickets this once, and remember to keep them well.
  • The ticket grants you a one way trip all the way to Hallstatt (and in fact, all the way to Dachstein Krippenstein, the cable car service to access the Dachstein mountains).
  • From here, it takes 90 minutes to reach Bad Ischl, a spa town eastwards of Salzburg.
  • Bus 150 will take you to a small station which is right outside the Bad Ischl train station.
  • At Bad Ischl, you can take a short break and admire the views of the mountains surrounding this little town.
  • Toilet breaks are a good idea and the restrooms are found on the side of the building beside the train tracks.
  • Across the road from this small station is a tobacco shop where you can get some light refreshments such as drinks and chips.
  • In about 20 minutes time, bus service 542 will pull up into the bus bay C, which you will use to head towards Gosaumuhle for the final transfer.
  • It is a short ride, lasting not more than 30 minutes.
  • Upon reaching Gosaumuhle, the bus will park right beside the bus service 543, which is the final bus that will take you to Hallstatt Lahn in about 5 to 10 minutes.
  • This bus stop is located at the Southern end of Hallstatt.

Total time taken by bus from Salzburg to Hallstatt: 2 hours 15 minutes including transfers.

See? We told you it was pain-free!

For the Hallstatt to Salzburg return journey, all you need is to reverse the sequence, or consider taking the train back to Salzburg (more below).

TIPS: There is a SPAR supermarket inside the train station which opens at 6am in the morning. Buy all the snacks and refreshments you need here. Good time to enjoy cheap Austrian food, the schnitzel!

MORE TIPS: View schedule for the bus services here:

  • Bus Service 150
  • Bus Service 542  (use the timetable function)
  • Bus Service 543  (use the timetable function)

Another popular method to get to Hallstatt from Salzburg is using the train.

From the Salzburg Hauptbahnhof, you are required to take the national train to Attnang Puchheim Bahnhof and transfer to a regional train (REX) to reach the Hallstatt Bahnhof, or Hallstatt Train Station.

Prices vary and if you manage to get yourself a Sparschiene ticket (discounted tickets), it could be comparable to the price of buses.

Journey from Salzburg to Attnang-Puchheim takes 46 minutes, and you will have between 5 to 17 minutes to get to your next train.

We find this quite stressful at times especially if you are a tourist and unsure of how connections work or where they are.

From here, it takes 88 minutes to reach your destination, but that’s not all!

You got to walk out and switch over to the Hallstatt ferry service ($2) to get to THE Hallstatt you are meaning to go to.

All in all, expect the Salzburg Hallstatt train to take around 2 hours and 35 minutes to get there.

salzburg day trip to hallstatt

Driving to Hallstatt causes a bit of a dilemma. Why do we say that?

On one hand, it offers the fastest way to reach Hallstatt, but on the other, parking is a huge headache.

Imagine having to park 2 kilometres away and walking your way into Hallstatt.

We are not saying that it is always the case but it could happen, since this is an extremely popular spot.

If you do want to drive, you can do so by taking the B158 route and then continue on B145.

The distance from Salzburg to Hallstatt is roughly 73 kilometres.

Road signs are clear and you should reach there in about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Just like the bus route, you will pass by numerous beautiful small towns and see first hand the lakes and hills that accompanies your drive.

Upon arriving to Hallstatt, there are 3 main parking lots where you can park your car and proceed to explore Hallstatt on foot.

These parking lots are just outside of Hallstatt, on the Southern end, and if you wish to visit the Salt Mines (Salzwelten), the lots are in close proximity to it.

A simple way to visit Hallstatt is to book yourself a guided tour.

With transport taken care of for you, visiting Hallstatt is a breeze.

The pickup location is conveniently located right next to Mirabell Palace, and since it departs at noon time, you do not have to be up at ungodly hours to make the journey to Hallstatt.

A guide is on hand to provide some useful information about the area, and covers the main sights in Hallstatt.

Take note though, you will have to pay extra $18 for the funicular.

Overall, this option will be suitable for you if you want a fuss free solution that saves you travelling time and brings you to all the main sights of Hallstatt.

While Hallstatt tours might cost you the most, it does bring you the greatest convenience too.

Day trip from Salzburg to Hallstatt beautiful view

Hallstatt is a tiny and remote village nestled among the giant mountains and a stunning lake.

For centuries, it has been a salt production village and access to it is very limited.

Today, Hallstatt is only populated by less than a thousand people, so you can imagine how small it is.

In fact, it doesn’t take you more than half an hour to walk from one end to the other!

Having said that, it makes for a perfect day trip since you won’t feel overwhelmed to see dozens of attractions within a day.

Look out for the lovely houses, the waterfall cascading over the top of the town and the majestic mountain views from the lake side.

Here’s what we think are the 9 best things to do in Hallstatt:

Day trip from Salzburg to Hallstatt Streets of Hallstatt

From one end to the other, Hallstatt stretches only around 1 kilometre, allowing you to walk the whole town in 15 minutes.

But of course this is not what we are asking you to do, since there are some many spots in town that will make you stop and be mesmerised by its beauty.

The buildings in Hallstatt look like they are right out of a fairytale, and you will find a dazzling display of colourful shop fronts and gingerbread houses.

Walk along the coast side and be treated to magnificent views of the snow capped mountains protecting this tiny town.

Everywhere you turn, you will be rewarded with something special, we promise you that.

Throughout the year, there are a number of fun activities being held in Hallstatt.

Depending on when you visit, you can easily take part in one of them.

One of them is the Farmer’s Market, which happens every Tuesday from 7.00 am to 12.00 pm.

Producers in the region bring about their freshest foods, offering a wonderful culinary experience for people from all walks of life.

For sure one of the most unique things you can do in Hallstatt is visiting the ancient archaeological site below the cellar of the Janu Sports Shop.

Ok you may be thinking what are we talking about. Let us explain.

When the merchant Frederick Janu went about expanding his sports shop cellar in the 1980s, he discovered a world of treasure.

Upon further excavations carried out by the Federal Monuments Office, a massive 300 square metres of remains were found, and today, you can take a look at Hallstatt’s history which dates back to 7000 years ago.

Opening hours: In the month of July and August, from 9.00 am to 6.00 pm.

Admission: Free

The heart of Hallstatt, where the Holy Trinity statue stands and basks in its glory.

It is filled with cute and cozy cafes where you can relax over a beverage and watch the crowds walk by. Or trying hard to take selfies with the statue.

This is also where main events take place, such as the Corpus Christi procession and Christmas markets.

Make your way up the staircases to get the best view of the Hallstatt Markt Square and all of Hallstatt.

Tip: there is free Wi-Fi here!

Surely no one needs extra motivation to get on a boat to experience Hallstatt Lake right?

Day trip from Salzburg to Hallstatt Salt Mine

This activity is considered one of the must dos in Hallstatt, and is great whichever way the weather turns out.

Touring through this 7000 years old quarry will open your eyes to the oldest salt mine in the world, and how it was operated in during its early days.

The tour allows you to go down wooden slides, a small train ride and ends with a parting gift of salt. During the educational journey, you get to learn more about the history of not just the mine, but the region and what led to it being salt rich.

An underground lake that utilises a light show will tell you about the neolithic times that the area went through.

After the tour, make sure to head up to the Rudolf’s Tower and Skywalk. More on it in the next section.

  • Salt Mine Tour and Funicular Round Trip: $34 per adult
  • Salt Mine Only: $24 per adult
  • Funicular Only (return): $18 per adult

Day trip from Salzburg to Hallstatt Skywalk

Back in the medieval days, the Rudolfsturm (Rudolf’s Tower) was a defence tower that dated back to the 13th century.

It then turned into the residence of the mining company’s operations manager all the way up to 1954.

Perched over a thousand feet up on the mountain side, you can get sweeping views of the region and take a walk out onto the Lookout Bridge.

Getting there on foot is suitable for those looking for a short hike (roughly an hour), or you can simply take the funicular which brings you to the top in 3 minutes.

There is a restaurant at the tower that doubles up as a fantastic Alpine viewpoint.

Right outside the Tower on the patio, you will find one of the most famous spots in Hallstatt, the Skywalk.

It is an impressive lookout point that is shaped like an inverted “V” and juts out of the cliffside, thus “suspending’ you in mid air. It does take some nerves to walk out there!

Funicular to get up to Rudolf’s Tower and Skywalk:

Cost : $18 per person

Museum lovers, we have not forgotten about you.

Since Hallstatt belongs to a World Heritage Site, it makes sense to have a World Heritage Museum here!

Also known as the Hallstatt Museum, it sits right in the middle of town, and uses some cool modern technology such as holographic images and 3D presentations to illustrate the history of Hallstatt.

You get entertained by sword fights that happened over Hallstatt in the medieval times, plus a ton of knowledge through the wonderful exhibits.

Rain or shine, this should be on your priority list!

$10 per adult

Day trip from Salzburg to Hallstatt Catholic Church of Hallstatt

Warning: if you have a fear of human bones, you should definitely stop reading this entry.

For the rest of us looking for an intriguing activity, the Catholic Church of Hallstatt is certainly a place to find that.

Not only is the Church an architectural standout, it is next door where you can find an ossuary, essentially a bone church, or bone house.

Found with St Michael’s Chapel, in it lies hundreds of skulls painted with the names and dates of the deceased buried here.

Decorative paintings and inscriptions are included to identify the bones by the family members.

The walk leads you through some houses in Hallstatt, and the views that accompanies it makes it super worthwhile.

Cost (for the bone house):

$1.50 per adult

Address: Kirchenweg 40, 4830 Hallstatt, Austria

We think this might be one of the toughest things to do in Hallstatt, picking a place to eat!

With so many lovely cafes and restaurants to choose from, where should you go?

For a taste of authentic traditional Austrian food, check out Bräugasthof, which is located at the ground floor of the hotel of the same name.

At the top of Rudolf’s Tower, make sure to visit Restaurant Rudolfsturm.  While it is somewhat touristy, it has the best seats in the whole town.

Day trip from Salzburg to Hallstatt Braugasthof restaurant

If you are looking for other activities to fill your time in this stunning wonderland, you should definitely consider the following nearby locations:

1. St Wolfgang , charming little Austrian market town

2. Bad Aussee , one of the most urban towns in Salzkammergut region

3. Admont Abbey , located about 1.5 hours from Hallstatt and contains the largest monastic library in the world

4. Dachstein Mountains , alpine mountain range that offers stunning views over the Salzkammergut region, including Hallstatt, great hiking spots and the Ice Caves

5. Fuschlsee, or Fusch Lake . This is where we dream of retiring, living on the shores of the lake and surrounded by giant mountains

6. St Gilgen , small village right beside the Wolfgang See (Wolfgang Lake)

Salzburg

Salzburg is a small city, so you only need more than 2 days to fully explore this city. I’ve put together a short list of 5 places I’ve visited and these are my selected places for you to not spend much time to visit too many castles, churches. These places will help you discover Salzburg’s lifestyle, culture, and architecture most specifically.

salzburg day trip to hallstatt

The road to the Hohensalzburg Fortress: This 11th century fortress is the symbol of Salzburg, you will find this structure at the highest point in the city, walk and stop by at this beautiful medieval fortress, the way up here is also very beautiful, especially in the fall.

salzburg day trip to hallstatt

Hellbrunn Palace: The beautiful architecture built in the 17th century during the Renaissance. A beautiful building to visit. Sometimes there will be classical concerts for you to listen to music in the place where Mozart was born. (Address: Fürstenweg 37, 5020 Salzburg, Austria/Hours: 9:30AM–7PM).

salzburg day trip to hallstatt

Get lost in the old town of Salzburg: The historic centre of the city of Salzburg is a UNESCO world heritage site, a must-visit place because you can see many famous tourist attractions with just a few steps. The entire city is really an old town but Salzburg Old Town is recognized in the area of Salzburg Cathedral & the well-known Getreidegasse shopping street where you can admire the quaint architecture and make the most of your time to shopping lots of local products. Here you can also visit the Plaza de Mozart where there is a large bronze statue of Mozart.

Petersfriedhof: The Saint Peter’s Cemetery and burial place at Nonnberg Abbey monastery – the oldest cemetery in the Austrian city of Salzburg, located at the foot of the mount Festungsberg with the Hohensalzburg Fortress atop of it. It is one of Salzburg’s most popular tourist attractions, with its unique baroque architecture. If you on the way to visit Hohensalzburg, why not stop by?!

Bus 150 from Salzburg will take you to the village of Bad Ischl then bus 542 will continue to take you to Hallstatt Lahn. When you come to Hallstatt, what should you do?

Hallstatt trip from Salzburg — Day 3: Salzburg again or climb Dachstein mountain

This time you can choose as you want, drop by cafes, delicious restaurants in Salzburg to taste local specialty or climb Dachstein mountain. But you should note a big thing is that Dachstein Krippenstein will be closed in November because it is the low season. I highly recommend you going to this place if you intend to spend a night in Hallstatt as it’s only a 10 minute bus or taxi ride away. If you departing from Salzburg, remember to go early to be able to explore both Hallstatt and Dachstein on the same journey. The bus fares is also quite cheap, less than 10 euros/trip.

salzburg day trip to hallstatt

You also can combine to visit Salzburg, Hallstatt and Dachstein in one day trip but it’s quite rush. However if you plan to visit in summer, it’s possible because European summer days are longer than in other seasons.

Salzburg Hallstatt itinerary: Which season should I go?

The fall from October to November is the best season to visit both Salzburg and Hallstatt because the weather is pleasant, not too cold and not too hot. Especially nature is dyed in impressive yellow that makes landscape look more splendid than ever.

salzburg day trip to hallstatt

Winter from December to February is also quite an impressive season, also a good time to come because you can see and playing with snow in the ancient village of Hallstatt and skiing in Dachstein. However, at this time, the temperature down to -10ºC will make you a bit uncomfortable.

hallstatt travel blog what to do in hallstatt photos picture trip guide (1)

Spring from March to May is the most pleasant season, you can still witnessing snow in Dachstein but you can’t skiing, but in return, this season has more sunny days. I will not recommend going in summer, because it is quite hot.

salzburg day trip to hallstatt

Salzburg Hallstatt day trip: Where should I stay?

I recommend staying in Salzburg if your budget is not very big. a&o Salzburg Hauptbahnhof  ( Agoda.com or Booking.com ) is my favorite hotel because there is a dorm bed option for only $25/night, or a double room for 2 people is $65/night. Especially, it owns modern space, many amenities as well as located only 200m from Salzburg Hbf station.

salzburg day trip to hallstatt

However, if you like the feeling of waking up in a European village, staying in Hallstatt is not too bad, the cheapest price for a double room in Hallstatt is about $60/night.

Hallstatt Hideaway

You can find more, check rates, availability & booking for Hallstatt hotels on Agoda.com or Booking.com .

The Ultimate Day Trip Itinerary to Hallstatt, Austria

Halstatt

If the most postcard perfect place on Earth had a name, it would be Hallstatt. Tucked into the towering Austrian Alps, is this little UNESCO World Heritage village that’s beautiful ALL YEAR ROUND! Hallstatt can be explored in a day or less, but if you want to explore more of the Salzkammergut – Hallstatt-  Dachstein UNESCO Heritage Region, I recommend spending two or three days here. You will find the Complete Itinerary to Salzkammergut here .

An easy day trip from both Salzburg and Vienna, the lakeside town of Hallstatt is one of the most beautiful places in Austria and is most definitely worth a visit. In this blog entry you’ll find EVERYTHING you need to know before visiting Hallstatt.

Some Fun Facts on Hallstatt before getting started

Hallstatt houses

Hallstatt is over 7000 years old, and is one of the oldest settlements in Europe. There’s even a period in history named after it – the Hallstatt period (800-400 BC).

Hallstatt is home to the oldest salt mine in the world and is considered to be one of the oldest still inhabited settlements in Europe. For this reason, UNESCO deemed Hallstatt worthy for preservation in 1997.

Another thing you will see in almost every motive of Hallstatt are some beautiful swans basking in the Hallstatt lake. The swans (or their great-grand swan parents) were imported here in the 1860s by the Austrian Empress Sisi when she vacationed here. She, like her cousin the Mad King Ludwig of Bavaria (whom i will indtroduce to you in detail in another blog entry), was obsessed with swans.

How to get to Hallstatt?

Hallstatt is easy to visit on a day trip from Salzburg. You can also visit Hallstatt from Vienna although it’s further away. If you leave in the morning, you can get here in a few hours by car, bus or train & ferry.

From Salzburg :

You can either drive (1,15 hours), take the bus all the way (2,15 hours) or go by train and ferry (2,30 hours).

By bus: Take Bus 150 from Salzburg to Bad Ischl. Then change to Bus 542 or 543 towards Gosaumühle/Hallstatt.

By train: Take the train to Attnang-Puchheim. Then change to the train towards Hallstatt train station. At the train station, take the ferry to Hallstatt.

From Vienna :

You can either drive (3,15 hours) or go by train (3,22 hours): Take the train to Attnang-Puchheim. Then change to the train towards Hallstatt train station. At the train station, take the ferry to Hallstatt.

If you are arriving by car, we recommend parking at Parking Lot No. 2. It’s right at the foot of the funiculars to the salt mine and skywalk, and is also closest to the village.

Note : Vignettes (Motorway Toll Stickers) are mandatory for driving on all Austrian motorways and highways. You can buy one from gas stations, post offices, rest areas, or automobile clubs. A 10-day sticker costs 9.20 Euro.

Things to do in Hallstatt

1. discover the classic village view point .

Hallstatt

Walk along the banks of the Hallstatt lake and take in the views of the Dachstein- Krippenstein on one side and the layers of half timbered houses of Hallstatt on the other. The main road, Gosaumühlstrasse, that runs from the north to the south side of the village has breathtaking views round every corner.

The iconic view point of the Village is located on this road – which you will find on Google as the Classic Village Viewpoint, Gosaumühlstrasse 67.

2. Pause and take in the cute little Central sqaure (Markplatz)

Marktplatz Hallstatt

Your trip to Hallstatt should include a visit to the historical town square. It’s really tiny and soooooo cute. The colourful houses, small cafés and picturesque architecture with a statue of the Holy Trinity in the centre, makes it one of the most iconic spots in the village.

3. Stroll the Village and See Hallstatt from above the Rooftops!

Hallstatt roof top

This is a route that not many take. So while all the crowd is down below, walk up along one of the alleyways to catch some mesmerizing views of the village and Hallstatt lake over the rooftops.

Müllerstiege was one of our most favorite spots for beautiful rooftop views.

4. Visit the Hallstatt Cemetery and Ossuary (Bone House) in St. Michael’s Chapel

The Cemetery –

It’s not often that a cemetery is included in the list of ‘places to visit’ in any itinerary. That said, the one in Hallstatt is beautiful, to say the very least. Each tombstone is beautifully decorated with flowers and the cemetery also offers some incredible rooftop views over Hallstatt.

View from Church Hallstatt

The Bone House –

Another fascinating attraction in Hallstatt is no doubt the bone house in St. Michael’s Chapel. And yes, it’s definitely as bizzare as it sounds. The charnel house is filled with bones and human skulls.

As mentioned above, Hallstatt dates back to the early Iron Age (800-400 BC) and all those people who lived here in that time obviously needed a final resting place. They couldn’t all be at the cemetery so the villagers built the bone house.

The bone house is said to have an unusual collection of over 600 artistically painted skulls and even more bones. Most of the skulls were painted in the 18th century, but a few of them are from the 20th century. Every skull is decorated with inscriptions and paint by the deceased family members.

5. Say Hello to the Swans (and Ducks) of Hallstatt and Catch a Boat ride to take in the views of Hallstatt from the water.

salzburg day trip to hallstatt

If you haven’t already arrived by ferry, have enough time and a great weather to play along, I suggest taking a boat trip on Lake Hallstatt (Hallstätter See). Despite the many clauses, this is one experience that we truly missed due to rain, and from what we have heard, is one you shouldn’t. Also spend a little while on the many piers and say hello to the beautiful swans, the swim really close to you.

6. Visit the Hallstatt Skywalk and the Salzwelten Saltmines

After you’ve spent a few hours in the town, it’s time to head up and see Hallstatt from above! Take the funicular to the top to see the oldest salt mine in the world OR walk there. The hike takes about 1 hour.

At the top, there’s a large patio hanging 360 meters above the town and Lake Hallstatt – this is the Hallstatt skywalk. The mountain scenery from above is so impressive that, even if you’re not visiting the salt mine, you should go there for the view!

Hallstatt Skywalk –

salzburg day trip to hallstatt

Funicular Round Trip: €20 per person (without entry to the Saltmines)

Regular opening hours: 9am-6pm (27/3-26/9).

Due to the Covid 19 regulations you will either need to show proof of vaccination or a negative test to enter the saltmines.

For current prices and information, click here.

Salzwelten Saltmines –

While the idea of visiting the world’s oldest salt mines did interest us, we weren’t exactly thrilled by the guided tour. It might be extra interesting for kids or for those of you who are actually into these stuff. However it wasn’t for us. In the mine is a salt lake and the place where the Mann in Salz ( a well-preserved corpse of a man discovered in 1734 by miners) was found.

So is Hallstatt worth visiting ?

Hallstatt from above

YES! YES! AND YESSSSS!

Now that said, Hallstatt is no hidden gem. It’s one of the most visited villages in Europe and is touristy ALL YEAR ROUND. So, to have a good experience, you need to adjust your expectations and travel smart.

And by that I mean get there as early in the morning as possible! Have an itinerary ready. Visit the salt mines in the afternoon when it’s hot or even better leave Hallstatt as the crowds start pouring in, and explore the rest of Salzkammergut ( if you are visiting for more than a day, like we did), and come back and enjoy the rest of Hallstatt in the evening.

We have our complete Salzkammergut Itinerary here for you. Feel free to leave a comment if you have any questions and if you liked this blog 😊

How to get to Hallstatt from Salzburg by Public Transport?

salzburg day trip to hallstatt

Are you planning a trip from Salzburg to Hallstatt? Hallstatt is the most popular day-trip destination from Salzburg, if not the most popular day-trip destination in Austria overall. We all love traveling, especially when it comes to discovering places like Hallstatt. However, sometimes it can be difficult to find the right combination of transportation options to reach your destination. That’s why we decided to create this guide. In this guide, we show you how to get from Salzburg to Hallstatt by public transport.

The best public transport option to embark on a day trip from Salzburg to Hallstatt is by bus or by a combination of bus and train. You first take bus 150 from Salzburg to Bad Ischl where you either change to another bus directly to Hallstatt or you change to a train to Hallstatt Bahnhof, the train station of Hallstatt, from where you need to take a boat to cross the lake Hallstatt.

I’ll tell you how to get to Hallstatt from Salzburg in more detail!

How far is Hallstatt from Salzburg?

Hallstatt is only located about 80 kilometers from Salzburg but by public transport, it takes almost 3 hours to get there. That’s because Hallstatt lies on the other end of the Salzkammergut lake district from Salzburg. When the bus navigates the area it only takes country roads and there is no direct connection from bus or train connection from Salzburg to Hallstatt. On the other hand, the bus ride is incredibly beautiful since you pass through one of Austria’s prettiest areas.

How to get to Hallstatt from Salzburg by Bus

The bus is by far the best way to reach Hallstatt from Salzburg. Getting to Hallstatt from Salzburg might seem confusing at first, but it is much easier than you might think. The simple reason is that most people, at least tourists, on these routes are following the same route as you. Just follow the crowds! Now, let’s have a look at each of the steps required to get from Salzburg to Hallstatt!

1. Bus 150 from Salzburg to Bad Ischl

How to get to Hallstatt from Salzburg by bus

To travel from Salzburg to Hallstatt by train, the first step is to take bus 150 from the main train station in Salzburg (Salzburg Hbf) or Mirabell square. Tell the bus driver that you are going to Hallstatt, and maybe that you will return the same day, and you will get a ticket that includes all of the transportation options described here, except for the boat. The price for the ticket is around €30,-.

In high season, it might be better to catch the bus at the train station since the bus departs from there. It’s possible that the bus would fill up and you would have to stand for 1,5 hours to get to Bad Ischl during very busy times. I’ve experienced this before. Mirabell square on the other hand might be closer to your accommodation and is closer to the sights in the old town.

Along Mirabell square, the bus stops are located on the opposite side of the street from the church. There are three bus stops, and yours is the one in the middle, right opposite the entrance to the church. Here is the timetable for bus 150.

You ride the bus to the very last stop which is the Bad Ischl train.

2a. Train and Boat from Bad Ischl to Hallstatt

salzburg day trip to hallstatt

There is a less convenient way to get from Bad Ischl to Hallstatt and it costs a few bucks more, but I personally prefer it. How come? Because I love the experience of arriving by boat in Hallstatt. Due to the lack of roads connecting Hallstatt to the rest of the world until the 19th century, the boat was the preferred means of transport. Plus I like to sit on the deck and watch Hallstatt come closer rather than getting off the bus at the end of the tunnel. However, there are times when you have to take the bus. I’ll cover that in the next option.

Bus 150 dropped you off at the train station in Bad Ischl and that’s where you catch the train. Just head over to the tracks and wait for the next train bound for Hallstatt Bahnhof. If you got your ticket from the bus driver on the 150 bus, you can take the train or the bus, both are included. You arrive at Hallstatt Bahnhof which is located across the lake from the village of Hallstatt, therefore, you have to take the boat which costs 2-3 euros. You get the ticket for the boat from the captain.

salzburg day trip to hallstatt

2b. Bus 542 and 543 from Bad Ischl to Hallstatt Lahn

Hallstatt Lahn is the center of Hallstatt. The option of continuing your journey by bus instead of switching to the train is arguably more convenient for two reasons. Continuing by bus is cheaper because you save 2-3 euros on the boat and it’s also a bit faster but as I said, I personally prefer the boat and would recommend it if you have time and are up for a boat ride. It’s also possible to take the boat on arrival and take the boat and the train on your way back from Hallstatt to Salzburg.

To take bus 542 from Bad Ischl, just wait in the same spot where bus 150 dropped you off. Bus 542 will pull into one of the bins and be marked with its final destination, Gosausee. Bus 542 doesn’t go directly to Hallstatt but you need to get off the bus at Gosaumühle and change to bus 543, which departs 5 minutes after the arrival of bus 542 and parks at the same place. Bus 543 then takes you to your final destination, Hallstatt.

salzburg day trip to hallstatt

In case you are planning to visit Dachstein Krippenstein where the Dachstein Ice Caves and the Five Fingers are located, you could also stay on bus 543. It would take you straight to the Dachstein Cable car, the stop called “Obertraun Dachsteinseilbahn Talstation” and you could return to Hallstatt later on. But making the most of Dachstein Krippenstein takes time so make sure to plan accordingly if that’s what you are up to. Here is a detailed guide to Dachstein Krippenstein.

How to reach Hallstatt from Salzburg by Train

Is there a direct train from Salzburg to Hallstatt? No. As with the bus connection, you would have to change trains to get to Hallstatt from Salzburg by train. The main reason I wouldn’t take the train is the opportunity to see the beautiful scenery of the Salzkammergut Lake District that you get to see on the bus. The train also takes 3 hours to get to Hallstatt and the price is about the same as when you take the bus.

To get to Hallstatt by train from Salzburg, you first take the train from Salzburg to Attnang-Puchheim. These are most trains that are bound for Vienna. In Attnang Puchheim you get off the train and transfer to a REX train, a regional train toward Hallstatt. As with the option of taking the bus and the train via Bad Ischl, the train from Attnang Puchheim drops you off at Hallstatt station, which is located across the lake from the village. Therefore, you will be taking the same boat to reach Hallstatt.

salzburg day trip to hallstatt

There are only two reasons to take the train from Salzburg to Hallstatt. The first would be that you have an Interrail or Eurail ticket. Since these tickets do not cover buses, if you take the bus, you will still be required to pay. Another reason would be to save money with an “Einfach-Raus-Ticket”. These are group tickets for a cheap fare. It’s easy to reduce the cost with an “Einfach-Raus-Ticket” if you are traveling with several people, but that option has a lot of downsides, such as slow trains and validity only from 9 am, which will leave you with very little time to spend in Hallstatt.

Tours from Salzburg to Hallstatt

While public transport from Salzburg to Hallstatt takes the entire day, a guided tour from Salzburg to Hallstatt would allow you to make Hallstatt a half-day tour from Salzburg. These tours are basically an expensive group taxi, you don’t need a guided tour from Salzburg but if you are aiming for extra comfort and don’t want to plan anything, a shuttle from Salzburg to Hallstatt is a great idea. Tour itinerary

Our Hallstatt Tour from Salzburg takes the direct route to Hallstatt. The drive through picturesque towns such as Fuschl, St. Gilgen and Strobl takes around 1.5 hours . During our 2.5 hours stay in Hallstatt you can explore the town at your own leisure. The trip back to Salzburg takes us through Gosau, Russbach and Abtenau.

The picturesque town can be explored on foot during your stay, and the history and sights offer a glimpse into the culture of the Salzkammergut region between Salzburg and Upper Austria.

Hallstatt’s rich history

Numerous archeological finds prove that humans have settled here for over 7,000 years since the Neolithic Age. The area has been populated continually since then. As early as 2000 BC salt was mined in Hallstatt. Further expansion of the salt mining over the following centuries led to a first economic golden age around 800 BC. The large burial ground in the Hochtal attests to the wealth of this era. A few decades after its discovery the period between 800 and 400 BC was renamed “Hallstatt Period” .

5 Tips for your Hallstatt Tour

Explore hallstatt on foot.

The charming little town of Hallstatt is best explored on a walking tour. The narrow streets and quaint houses exude their own flair and allow visitors to experience the magic of Alpine culture firsthand.

The best place to start your Hallstatt walking tour is at the Lahner Steg, a small lookout point, right next to the bus parking lot. From the footbridge you can enjoy a great view of the water, the town and often the swans of Hallstatt.

From the parking lot, follow Seestraße and walk between old, charming houses and lakeside promenade. On the Seestraße you will find, among other things, a boat rental and small stores with souvenirs and typical food.

At the end of the Seestraße you will reach the market place, which offers the heart of Hallstatt, also the famous boat of the Hallstatt Schifffahrt docks here. From the market square, Gosaumühlstrasse leads past the cemetery & church to the famous lookout point, which offers a beautiful view of the whole town.

The famous “Bone House” in Hallstatt

Don’t miss out on the “Bone House” right next to the catholic church and make it the highlight of your Hallstatt Tour! It is the only one of its kind around the world. The small building dates back to the 16 th century and houses over 600 skulls and bones of Hallstatt citizens. The local cemetery is so small that the remains of deceased persons are exhumed after 20 to 30 years to make space. Their bones and skull are then bleached, painted and placed in the Bone House. During a visit to the Beinhaus you will learn exciting insights into the culture of the small town.

Ride with the Electric Boat on the Hallstatt Lake

Rent an electric boat and go on a boat tour on Lake Hallstatt to get a different view of the picturesque town from the lake’s surface.

Viewing Platform "World Heritage View"

If you prefer a bird’s eye perspective make sure to take the funicular up to the Skywalk – an observation deck 1,100 ft. above the roofs of Hallstatt. Enjoy the breath-taking views of Hallstatt and Lake Hallstatt.

Experience the History of Hallstatt

Those interested in history will enjoy a visit to the World Heritage Museum Hallstatt . It houses an impressive collection of archeological finds and historic artifacts from the long history of Hallstatt and its surroundings. Furthermore, the Hallstatt salt mine gives insights into the history of salt mining in die Salzkammergut region.

Please note those sights as listed are not part of our tour.

Therefore, any attraction to be arranged on spot also considering the opening time during off-season.

5 Reasons NOT to do a Salzburg to Hallstatt Day Trip

Planning a trip to Austria? If so, your Austria itinerary likely includes visiting the popular cities of Vienna, the capital, and Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart and sites from The Sound of Music. Many people also choose to incorporate a Salzburg to Hallstatt day trip into their Austria itinerary.

Hallstatt day view

But even with the close distance between the two cities, we don’t recommend a day trip from Salzburg to Hallstatt. The reason? One day does NOT do the area justice. You should plan to spend at least one night in Hallstatt. Here are important reasons why…

Why we don’t recommend a Salzburg to Hallstatt day trip

1. hallstatt is world-famous for a reason..

view of village of Hallstatt Austria

It’s easy to see why.

This picturesque setting is nestled between towering mountains and the shimmering, blue water of Hallstatt Lake. A blend of dark wood chalets and colorful buildings with flowered balconies layer high into the lush, green hillside.

Hallstatt houses built into the hillside

In fact, some admirers from China did more than just sit and savor their time in Hallstatt. They actually went home and built a replica town in China modeling it after this striking Austrian village.

Hallstatt is that impressive!

2. A Salzburg to Hallstatt day trip means you’ll miss experiencing Hallstatt in solitude.

Most visitors spending the day in Hallstatt start to roll into the village by early to mid-morning. By 9 a.m. Hallstatt is already busy with crowds of daytrippers. If you’re one of them, you will never get to see the peaceful side of Hallstatt. No matter how beautiful the village is, if you’re walking shoulder to shoulder with massive crowds and vying for position to take the best photos only to have heads in the way because of so many people – that does not exude the fairytale feeling.

3. There are plenty of things to do in Hallstatt.

The village may be small with a population around 800, but there are places to explore, adventures to be had, and plenty of things to do in Hallstatt that could easily fill a couple days. Here are a few favorites:

Hallstatt Salt Mine

4. More time in Hallstatt allows for better photo opportunities.

If you take a day trip from Salzburg to Hallstatt and it’s rainy, cloudy, or foggy on the day you’re there, you won’t be able to see panoramic views from the 5 Fingers viewing platform or the salt mine skywalk. You’ll also leave with less than desirable pictures of the fairytale village known for its stunning beauty. If you have another day in Hallstatt, however, you have a second chance of seeing the village in sunlight and capturing postcard-worthy pictures. Our couple days in Hallstatt provided an excellent series of pictures from Hallstatt’s postcard angle viewpoint: a day in the sun, a cloudy day, and gleaming at night. Take a look:

5. You’ll regret rushing the route in between Salzburg and Hallstatt.

A Salzburg to Hallstatt day trip means you’re traveling right through the stunning lake district of Salzkammergut . You will be wowed! The color of the lakes is unreal.

*Important Tips for visiting Hallstatt

Rent a car and drive from salzburg to hallstatt..

While Hallstatt is accessible by both bus and train, public transportation isn’t as convenient as traveling by car. There is no direct bus or train route to Hallstatt – they both include transfers which extends the length of the journey. We recommend driving yourself. You’ll have more flexibility and can travel at your own pace – including stopping at other scenic spots in Austria’s Salzkammergut on the way.

Arrive early.

Even if you plan to spend the night in Hallstatt, we still suggest getting to Hallstatt early on that first day to maximize your time in Hallstatt. Plus, you’ll want to get a good parking spot. See below…

Know which Hallstatt parking lot is best for you.

Hallstatt is a traffic-free village, so you’ll need to park your car and walk around town and to your accommodations. Fortunately, Hallstatt is very small. In fact, you can walk from one end of the village to the other in about 15 minutes.

There is plenty of Hallstatt parking, but it’s not all convenient. The closest parking lot is P2 at the south end of town and it’s open during the summer months. Signs will direct you to the lot where there is also an electronic sign displaying how many spots are still open in the lot. Be aware this lot fills up quickly.

Two other lots a little further outside of town offer more parking. The P1 lot offers a shuttle service to hotels within the village, so that’s a good option if you’re staying at a hotel in Hallstatt.

Book your Hallstatt accommodations early.

More than a half million people visit Hallstatt each year. With a limited number of Hallstatt hotels , it’s best to book your accommodations early. There are also a variety of Hallstatt Airbnb’s available for rent too.

Make reservations in advance since Hallstatt has a limited number of restaurants.

Hallstatt is very small. There are not a ton of restaurants. Make reservations in advance if possible. And don’t overlook the Karmez Kebap Cart north of the Marktplatz for a casual meal. Just follow the scrumptious smell and long line of people.

Plan on a quiet evening.

Hallstatt does not have a very active nightlife, but that’s okay. What Hallstatt lacks in nightlife it makes up for in beautiful surroundings and cozy abodes. After dinner and drinks, you can take a nighttime stroll around the village and pop open a bottle of wine at your comfy chalet overlooking the water. It doesn’t get much better than that.

We definitely want to do Vienna for 2 days but otherwise are pretty open. I was thinking of hitting Salzburg for more culture and Innsbruck for some alps/views/hiking. Does anyone have any advice about how to structure this trip? What's worth seeing? Any small towns we should definitely hit?

We definitely want a mixture of hiking, culture, food. We're flexible about Vienna being at the beginning or the end of the trip.

Any advice would be SO helpful! I'm seeing some posts saying Innsbruck isn't worth it- you can get great hikes and views around Salzburg. But curious of everyone's thoughts. Thank you!

You don’t say how you’re getting around on your trip.

With a car I’d suggest staying in the Berchtesgaden area and visit Salzburg as a day out from here.

If you’re flying home from Vienna, I’d put Vienna at the end of your trip.
