1. Pacific Surfliner

The Pacific Surfliner train ride is a beautiful 351-mile journey that takes you from San Luis Obispo in central California to San Diego in the south. 

Along the way, you’ll get to see stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, especially between Los Angeles and San Diego, where the train runs right along the SoCal coastline. 

It’s truly breathtaking!

The route also passes through other major cities like Santa Barbara where you’ll be able to catch a glimpse of its famous pier and beaches. 

The Pacific Surfliner is actually one of Amtrak’s busiest routes in the entire United States!

This really shows how much people love this scenic trip. 

If you ride the entire length, it takes roughly 5 hours and 45 minutes.

Whilst aboard the train, you’ll witness California’s diverse landscapes from the Mediterranean-style scenery of Santa Barbara to the sandy beaches in the south.

It’s also really easy to sit back and relax as this train is known for its comfortable seats and large windows.

At certain times of the year, you might even be able spot migrating whales in the ocean from your seat!

2. Coast Starlight

The Coast Starlight train stretches from Seattle, Washington, all the way down to Los Angeles, California.

The entire route takes 35 hours.

While it travels through several states, its path through California is arguably the most scenic as it offers incredible views of the Pacific coast, especially near Santa Barbara. 

This train takes riders through the lush forests of the Pacific Northwest, down through the scenic valleys of California and along the beautiful coastline.

It’s mesmerizing.

You’ll even pass through the dramatic snow-capped mountains of the Cascade Range.

The Coast Starlight is particularly known for its observation cars which have large windows that are perfect for taking in the stunning landscapes. 

A highlight of the trip is witnessing the towering Mount Shasta along the way.

This 4,321m volcano is truly a sight to behold.

The train also passes by the San Francisco Bay Area and offers views of the iconic Golden Gate Bridge from a distance. 

You’ll also travel through the famous wine country of California which provides a glimpse of the vineyard-filled landscapes. 

The Coast Starlight isn’t just about the views though, it also has a rich and interesting history.

This train has actually served as a vital link between the north and south of the West Coast since 1971.

3. Santa Cruz Beach Train

The Santa Cruz Beach Train is a fun and unique train ride that takes passengers from the historic Roaring Camp in Felton, all the way to the sunny Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. 

It takes approximately 1 hour each way.

This special train journey takes you through the towering redwood forests of the Santa Cruz Mountains which offers a shaded escape before reaching the sunny coastline.

Along the way, the train even crosses several old wooden bridges and trestles that were originally built in 1909!

This really makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. 

The train chugs along the same routes that were once used to transport lumber out of the mountains over a hundred years ago. It’s pretty historic!

In fact, the Santa Cruz Beach Train actually operates on one of the oldest and most historic rail lines in the whole of California.

It originally opened back in 1875.

You’ll also get the chance to catch glimpses of wildlife and native plants as you make your way through the forest. 

Once the train descends from the mountains, it arrives at the vibrant Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk which is famous for its amusement park that sits right on the beach. 

You can choose from open-air or enclosed passenger cars, depending on the season.

4. Napa Valley Wine Train

The Napa Valley Wine Train is a unique experience that takes you on a journey through the beautiful Napa Valley in California which is famous for its wine production. 

This train ride starts in the historic town of Napa and travels north to St. Helena, winding through the heart of the wine country.

It’s a 36-mile round trip.

Along the way, you’ll be treated to stunning views of vineyards stretching out on both sides with the rolling hills of Napa Valley in the background. 

The train itself is a collection of vintage rail cars that have been restored to their early 20th-century elegance.

The Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad is a historic steam train that takes passengers on a scenic journey through the Sierra National Forest.

It’s located just 10 minutes from the south entrance of Yosemite National Park. 

This exciting ride starts and ends at the historic Sugar Pine Railroad station and lasts around an hour.

You’ll be able to learn about the area’s rich logging history.

As the train chugs along the tracks, you’ll be treated to beautiful views of towering pine trees and rugged mountain landscapes.

It’s one of the most scenic train rides in California.

One of the coolest things about this train is that it runs on a narrow gauge railway which was commonly used for logging trains in the early 1900s.

The Skunk Train is a famous train ride in California that takes passengers through the heart of the redwood forests. 

The train offers several different routes but most begin at either Fort Bragg, on the Mendocino coast, or Willits.

Most rides last between 1 and 2 hours.

This train got its unique name from the original gas-powered motorcars it used which actually smelled like skunks!

As the train moves along the tracks, you’ll be surrounded by ancient redwoods.

These are actually some of the tallest and oldest trees in the world. 

The journey also takes you across wooden trestle bridges and through tunnels carved out of the mountain.

8. California Zephyr

The California Zephyr is an amazing train ride that takes passengers on a journey across the United States.

It runs all the way from Chicago to Emeryville in California, which is located just outside of San Francisco. 

If you rode the entire length, it would take approximately 51 hours (one-way) so you’ll definitely want to set aside a couple of days for this epic train ride!

During its journey through California, the train offers stunning views of the Sierra Nevada mountains which are especially breathtaking. 

You’ll also be able to watch as the landscape changes from the high desert plains in Nevada to the lush, green slopes of the Sierra Nevadas.

It takes around 1 hour and 20 minutes round trip.

From redwood groves to sprawling desert landscapes to miles of picturesque countryside, America has no shortage of stunning scenery across its 50 states. One of the best ways to take in all the beauty is by hopping aboard a train. 

While a road trip through America is always a great choice to see the country's sights, we'd argue train travel is even better. Not only is riding  on a train a timeless experience with notes of romance and nostalgia, but there's no airport stress or need to be at attention behind the wheel. Instead,  you can sit back, relax and simply stare out the window as you take it all in. 

Below, you'll find the best and most scenic train rides across the country. On the West Coast, take in ocean views aboard the Coast Starlight (from Los Angeles to Seattle ) or the Surfliner, which hugs the California coast for miles. On the East Coast, the Mount Washington Cog Railway takes you through the Mount Washington area in New Hampshire. Looking for something even more adventurous? Head to Alaska  to catch the Denali Star’s 350-mile trek from Fairbanks to Anchorage.

1.  rockies to the red rocks.

Denver, CO to Moab, UT

Trip length: Two days

The first U.S. offering from luxury Canadian company Rocky Mountaineer, the ' Rockies to the Red Rocks ' trip takes passengers on a two-day ride from Denver to Moab—passing through stunning Rocky Mountains and southwest scenery along the way. Best of all? Passengers will witness all that gorgeous nature from the train's glass-dome top! That's right, we're talking about unobstructed views of some of the most gorgeous scenery in the USA . The 2024 season runs from April 14 through October 9.

2.  Coast Starlight

Los Angeles, CA to Seattle, WA

Trip length: 36 hours

Traveling by train instead puts a spin on the classic left-coast road trip. The advantages? There are zero wrong-turn fights and way more photo ops. The 1,377-mile Coast Starlight route hits the best of the West: Santa Barbara, San Francisco, Sacramento, Portland, and more. On the 36-hour trip, bounce from your seat to the dining car and the 'sightseer lounge car,' where all the seats face the panoramic, floor-to-ceiling windows. 

3.  Pacific Surfliner

San Diego, CA to San Luis Obispo, CA

Trip length: 8-9 hours

If you're looking for a train ride with ocean views, you can't beat Amrak's Pacific Surfliner , which travels along a 351-mile route, many of the trip is directly along the California coast. The route starts out in San Diego before meandering up through Anaheim, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and other stops before ending in San Luis Obispo in the central part of the state. 

4.  The Grand Canyon Railway

Williams, AZ to the Grand Canyon, AZ

Trip length: 2 hours 15 minutes

Sure, you may have been to the Grand Canyon already, but have you ever admired Grand Canyon country by train? On The Grand Canyon Railway , you’ll depart from Williams, Arizona, and roll through pine forests and prairies, spotting pronghorn and bald eagles, before arriving two hours and 15 minutes later at the epic South Rim. All of the historic cars of the Grand Canyon Railway have fascinating former lives and some have glass-dome ceilings for unstoppable panoramas. 

5.  The Empire Builder

Chicago, IL to Portland, OR

Trip length: 45–46 hours

There is only one word to describe this journey: epic. The Empire Builder runs daily between Chicago and the Pacific Northwest, mirroring much of Lewis and Clark’s original expedition. It passes through a greatest-hits list of must-see sites, from the urban (St. Cloud and Minneapolis) to the great outdoors (big-sky country and Glacier National Park ). The trip totals 46 hours, which warrants booking at least a roomette with seats that convert to beds so you can fully stretch out once you’ve gotten your fill of landscapes under the moonlight. 

6.  The Alaska Denali Star

Anchorage, AK to Fairbanks, AK

Trip length: 12 hours

This 350-mile stretch through the heart of Alaska highlights the state's beautiful, rugged wilderness. Between the birch forests, rushing rivers, caribou- and bear-spotting, views of Mt. McKinley and a stint through Denali National Park, there’s a reason this is the Alaska Railroad ’s flagship sojourn. If you can swing it, splurge on a GoldStar upgrade and take in the spectacular scenery from an open-air viewing car, with absolutely nothing between you and the wild. 

7.  Skunk Train

Willits, CA

Trip length: 2 hours

Hopping aboard  Skunk Train  is like traveling back in time—this historic train has been traversing Mendocino County in California since 1885. Today, you can choose from a variety of routes and experiences. The most popular journey is Wolf Tree Turn. This 16-mile route will take you through old-growth redwood groves within Noyo River Canyon, over trestle bridges, and under tunnels, ending with a stop in Crowley, where you can take in the majesty of one of the oldest trees in the area, the Wolf Tree. Enjoy snacks and beverages (including alcoholic ones) before heading back toward Willits.

8.  The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad

Bryson City, NC

Trip length: 3.5 hours

It may be pint-size, but Bryson City, the departure point for this rail-riding adventure, is rich with local gems like barbecue joints, a soda fountain and a brewery. The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad has various routes, but the four-and-a-half-hour Nantahala Gorge excursion is a scenery-serving star, snaking along the forested Nantahala River and crossing the Fontana Lake by bridge. Foliage lovers, take note: The leaves here are breathtaking during the fall.

9.  The Mount Washington Cog Railway

Bretton Woods, NH

Trip length: 3 hours

Like the Little Engine That Could, this antique train chugs daily up Mount Washington , depositing its passengers at the 6,288-foot peak, the highest in the Northeast. A working museum of sorts (the track dates to 1852), the Cog has the elevated feel of a gondola, only you’re in a sturdy little train. At the top, take in the sweeping views of Canada and the Atlantic on a clear day. 

10.  The Napa Valley Wine Train

Napa Valley, CA

Trip length: 3 to 6 hours on average

On this California Wine Country track, you can get intoxicated by the scenery alone: picture-perfect wineries and hills carpeted in lush rows of vines. But you’ll have a little help, what with all the vino you’ll be sipping alongside your onboard multicourse meal—both lunch and dinner are options. The roving restaurant aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train comprises a collection of vintage Pullman railcars complete with mahogany panels and brass hardware. So go ahead and soak it all up—you’re not behind the wheel, after all.

11.  California Zephyr

Emeryville, CA to Reno, NV

Trip length: 6 hours 45 minutes

At more than 2,400 miles long, the  California Zephyr —stretching from San Francisco to Chicago—is Amtrak's longest route. While we don't recommend you do the route in its entirety (unless that floats your boat), we highly recommend the route stretching from the Bay Area (hop on in San Francisco or Emeryville) to the Lake Tahoe area (get off in Reno or Truckee). This scenic journey is an ideal way to get to Tahoe, beat the traffic, and take in dreamy views.  

12.  The Hawaiian Railway Society

Trip length: 1.5 hours

Train travel takes a turn for the tropical on this 90-minute jaunt across Oahu in an old sugar-cane hauler traveling at the lickety-split speed of 15 miles an hour. The ride aboard the Hawaiian Railway Society shows you a rarely-seen version of Hawaii, filled with old sisal plantations and ghost towns. Time your trip for the second Sunday of the month and you can book a seat in the elegant 1900 parlor car that was the personal ride of Oahu Railway & Land Co. founder Mr. Dillingham. It's worth noting, however, that reservations are now required to ride the train. 

13.  Durango Narrow Gauge Railroad

Durango, CO to Silverton, CO

Trip length: 3.5 hours

One of the most scenic ways to experience one of the most scenic states; a ride on the Narrow Gauge Railroad isn’t merely photo fodder, but a full immersion into the wild, wild west. The train has been rolling between Durango and Silverton since 1882, when it was tasked with transporting silver and gold out of the San Juan Mountains. The 45.4-mile route runs in both directions along the Animas River, crisscrossing it five times, and passing by old stagecoach trails and long-deserted mining camps as it winds between 14,000ft high peaks.

14.  The Ethan Allen Express

New York City, NY to Burlington, VT

Trip length: 7 hours 35 minutes

While the destination is a major draw, getting there is half the fun on this five-and-a-half-hour journey from New York City to Vermont. On the Ethan Allen Express , you’ll cruise through the postcard-perfect towns of New York’s Hudson Valley; hit Saratoga Springs, as famous for its horse races as its hot springs and snake around Vermont’s fittingly named Green Mountains, before landing in charming little-big city Rutland, with its historic downtown and one helluva farmers' market.

"It truly was a sight to behold."

Rocky Mountaineer 

The famous Rocky Mountaineer train connects British Columbia and Alberta, running through the Canadian Rockies. It only runs during the day. There are scenic unique routes, with stops in Jasper, Banff, Lake Louise, Vancouver or Whistler. 

The train offers two levels of service, GoldLeaf and SilverLeaf. GoldLeaf has a full-domed upper level, with spacious reclining seats. Guests eat in the lower-level dining room. Other amenities include an outdoor viewing platform, complimentary beverages and snacks, and dedicated hosts. 

In SilverLeaf , guests dine at their seat, next to large picture windows. There is a small, enclosed outdoor area.

Via Rail 

As Canada’s major passenger rail service, VIA Rail connects Canada from Vancouver to Halifax. It offers four different train routes. Major city stops include Vancouver, Jasper, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec and Halifax. Depending on the train route, VIA Rail offers daylight or overnight sleeper train experiences. Its train cars feature large picture windows, so you can take in the vast Canadian landscape. Some trains offer a Panorama car, where giant windows extend to the ceiling. 

#2 Travel tip: Cover more Canada on the train

For first-time visitors to Canada who want to take in as much as possible, a trans-Canada train journey is an ideal trip. Add time in terminal cities, such as Vancouver, Toronto, and Halifax to explore.

1. Daylight Train 

The Rocky Mountaineer runs from April to the end of September during daylight hours. It follows this schedule to make the most of the amazing views in the Canadian Rockies. Guests are transferred to hotels for overnight stops, and do not sleep on the train. 

2. Passenger Train 

VIA Rail is Canada’s main passenger train. It connects the country from Vancouver to Halifax with four major train routes. It offers different classes of train cars. Business class gets lounge access, food and beverage service included, priority boarding, extra luggage and wider, comfortable seating. 

3. Sleeper Train 

There are two train routes in Canada which allow you to sleep on the train. The first is between Vancouver and Toronto on The Canadian. You can break up this route with stop-overs in Jasper or Winnipeg. The second route with a sleeper train is the Ocean train from Montreal to Halifax. Both sleeper train routes are available all year long. Some sleeper trains in Canada are equipped with special panoramic viewing cars to provide you with the best view of the scenery day or night. 

Vancouver to Toronto

VIA Rail’s The Canadian connects Toronto and Vancouver. It stops in Winnipeg, Edmonton, and Jasper. This route can also be travelled in reverse. This train covers a total of 2762 miles, which takes about 86 hours. Enjoy sweeping views in the Panorama car, where giant windows extend up to the ceiling. Travelling from Toronto to Vancouver, the Canadian carries you from the forests of Ontario, through the expanse of the Prairies, and past the dramatic snow-capped Rocky Mountains. 

Montreal to Halifax 

VIA Rail’s The Ocean train connects Montreal to Halifax. The 839-mile journey takes approximately 21 hours. It has been running since 1904 and is the oldest continuously operated named passenger train in North America. You'll first travel through the French-speaking province of Quebec. Then past a backdrop of lighthouses and seascapes in the Maritime Province of Nova Scotia. As you relax onboard, you'll see tiny communities along your route, representing French Canadian, Acadian, Celtic and English heritage. 

Vancouver to the Rockies 

Along with a segment of VIA Rail’s The Canadian route, The Rocky Mountaineer runs from Vancouver through the Rockies. There are three different routes to enjoy. The Rainforest to Gold Rush connects North Vancouver and Jasper, with stops in Whistler and Quesnel. The Journey through the Clouds also connects Vancouver to Jasper, but takes the Yellowhead pass, and stops in Kamloops. The First Passage to the West connects Vancouver to Banff, with a stop in Kamloops.

By train travelers for train travelers, 5 most scenic amtrak routes on the east coast.

When it comes to scenic Amtrak routes, most people think of the trains that travel along the Pacific Ocean, through the Southwest deserts and into the Rocky Mountains — all in the western half of the United States. However, there are also beautiful sights to see east of the Mississippi River, including the Appalachian Mountains, New River Gorge (pictured above) and the Hudson River Valley.

To start exploring the natural beauty in the eastern United States, here are the five most scenic Amtrak routes on the East Coast listed in alphabetical order. For current train schedules and ticket prices, visit Amtrak.com.

For stunning views of the Hudson River Valley and Lake Champlain, including travel along rocky cliffs, book tickets on Amtrak’s Adirondack route. You’ll have hours of water scenery and the option to travel to Montreal (passport required). New York City is at one end of the route and is a popular place to start this trip, especially with connections to other Amtrak trains ( view the list ).

Plan a trip in October to view the stunning fall foliage or in summer for the most daylight. Consider a stop at the Fort Edward Station to visit beautiful Lake George via Enterprise rental car . Call to make pickup arrangements. Drive time from Enterprise to the edge of the lake is approximately 15 minutes.

A long-distance route that connects Chicago with East Coast cities, the Cardinal is one of Amtrak’s hidden gems. You’ll see the Shenandoah Valley and travel through the beautiful New River Gorge in West Virginia (pictured above).

Summer travel is best, especially if you are traveling from the East Coast. Consider booking tickets to Charleston, WV if you are heading west. You can rent a car there and drive to the New River Gorge National Park . Trains operate three days per week so you’ll need to stay two nights in the area or book a flight out of Charleston for the return trip (view airline information ).

If traveling east from cities such as Chicago or Indianapolis, late spring, summer and fall are good times to ride. We recommend booking your tickets to Washington D.C. or Alexandria, Virginia to end this trip and sightsee. Washington Reagan National Airport is close to the Alexandria Station and there is also WMATA Metro train service to Dulles International Airport from both stations. Empire Service

Multiple Empire Service trains travel through the Hudson River Valley each day with departures from cities in New York State (including from Penn Station in Manhattan). It’s easy to enjoy the scenery on a day trip. We recommend traveling between New York City and either Poughkeepsie (1.5 hours one way) or Hudson, New York (2 hours one way).

Some Empire Service trains travel further into Upstate New York and you can stay overnight and explore attractions in cities including Albany, Syracuse, Rochester and Niagara Falls . Note that Lake Shore Limited (private accommodations available) and Maple Leaf trains stop at many of the same stations and have the same Hudson River views.

Ethan Allen Express

Like the Adriondack and Empire Service, trains on the Ethan Allen Express route depart from New York City and travel through the beautiful Hudson River Valley. The difference is that the Ethan Allen Express trains travel to and from Vermont with views of charming towns, forests and mountain ranges. You’ll even cross over a small waterfall near Rutland, Vermont.

Consider a fall trip to view the foliage or in winter when snow is on the ground. You’ll see the most scenery on southbound trains, so if you plan to travel to Vermont, be sure to ride Amtrak on the return trip. Rutland is one destination to consider — you can stay overnight in town or at the nearby Killington Resort where you can ski and enjoy other activities. Or travel to Burlington ‘s Union Station at the end-of-the-line to explore events, food, culture and Lake Champlain.

For charming scenery in Vermont and travel along and over three rivers (Winooski River, White River and the Connecticut River), book an Amtrak trip on the Vermonter . You can board this train as far south as Washington D.C. and travel as far north as St. Albans. There are also stops at other major East Coast cities, making it easy to escape urban life for time in nature.

You’ll need to be on a southbound train to see Vermont in daylight. One option is to fly to the Burlington International Airport and board the Vermonter at the nearby Essex Junction-Burlington Station. Or if you are traveling by train to Vermont, plan to stay at least one night (two nights if you want to sightsee) and return on Amtrak. Consider booking your tickets to Brattleboro, Waterbury-Stowe or St. Albans where you can walk to lodging from the Amtrak stations.
