The school visit: what to look for, what to ask

The school visit: what to look for, what to ask

Be sure to visit all the schools on your list, if you can. A visit is the best way to determine whether a school is right for your child. Even a short visit will help you identify a school’s strengths and challenges. It’s also the only way to get a feel for a school’s climate — intangible but important factors like the dynamism of the teaching, engagement of the students, quality of communication, level of respect between students, teachers, administrators, and parents, and the overall sense that the school offers a safe and inspiring learning environment .

School visit checklists

Use this printable guide to help you plan your elementary, middle, or high school visit.

Before your visit

  • Do your homework. Read about the schools you’ll be visiting. Examine their school profiles on GreatSchools.org. Talk to other parents and check your local newspaper for articles about the schools.
  • Contact the school.  Most schools conduct regular school tours and open houses during the enrollment season — typically in the fall. Call the school or go online to schedule a visit.
  • Ask and observe. Jot down your questions before your visit (the sample questions below will help you create your list).

Key questions to ask

  • Does this school have a particular educational philosophy or mission?
  • What curriculum does the school use for math, reading, science, etc? Ask if the school follows the Common Core State Standards , Next Generation Science Standards , and which program(s) are they using to teach children to read ?
  • What is the average class size ?
  • What is this school’s approach to student discipline and safety? Do they practice restorative justice ? Are the discipline practices fair for families of color ? Do they practice corporal punishment , and if so, can you opt out of that for your child?
  • How much homework do students have? What is the school’s philosophy/approach to homework ?
  • What kind of library resources are available to students?
  • How is technology used to support teaching and learning at this school?
  • How do the arts fit into the curriculum? Is there a school choir, band or orchestra? A drama program? Art classes?
  • What extracurricular opportunities (sports, clubs, community service, competitions) are available for students?
  • How do students get to school? Is free school busing available?
  • Is bullying a problem at the school? Does the school have an anti-bullying policy ?
  • Does the school have a program for gifted students ?
  • How does this school support students who have academic, social or emotional difficulties?
  • What strategies are used to teach students who are not fluent in English?
  • What professional development opportunities do teachers have ? In what ways do teachers collaborate?
  • Does the school offer Physical Education (PE) classes?
  • What are some of the school’s greatest accomplishments? What are some of the biggest challenges this school faces?

Features to look for

  • Do classrooms look cheerful? Is student work displayed, and does it seem appropriate for the grade level?
  • Do teachers seem enthusiastic and knowledgeable, asking questions that stimulate students and keep them engaged?
  • Does the principal seem confident and interested in interacting with students, teachers and parents?
  • How do students behave as they move from class to class or play outside?
  • Is there an active Parent Teacher Association (PTA) ? What other types of parent involvement take place at this school?
  • How well are the facilities maintained? Are bathrooms clean and well supplied, and do the grounds look safe and inviting?

Especially for elementary schools

  • What are some highlights of this school’s curriculum in reading , math, science and social studies?
  • What criteria are used to determine student placement in classes?
  • How does this school keep parents informed of school information and activities? Are they easy to communicate with ?
  • Does the school let parents know what their rights are (and aren’t ) in regards to your child’s education?
  • Is quality child care available before and after school?
  • How much outdoor time do kids get each day?

 Especially for middle schools

  • How does the school guide and prepare students for major academic decisions that will define their options in high school and beyond? Do they provide advice to parents on how to help this age group ?
  • Does the school offer tutoring or other support if students need extra help?
  • Are world language classes (French, Spanish, etc.) offered to students?
  • If the school is large, does it make an effort to provide activities that create a sense of community ?

Especially for high schools

  • Does this school have a particular curriculum focus, such as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) or the arts?
  • What kind of emphasis does the school place on college preparation ?
  • Does the school have a good selection of Advanced Placement (AP) and honors classes?
  • What percentage of students take the SAT or/and ACT ?
  • Where do students go after they graduate? How many attend four-year college? Are graduates prepared for college ?
  • Are counselors available to help students make important decisions about classes?
  • Is college counseling and support available?
  • Does the school offer a variety of career planning options for students who are not college bound?
  • Does the school staff set high expectations for all students?

  • How does the school select teachers? Are the teachers certificated?
  • Is this the permanent location or facility for the school? If not, will the school be moving to another location in the near future?

Last Updated: March 30, 2024 References

Whether you’re a student or a professional, a visit report helps you document the procedures and processes at an industrial or corporate location. These reports are fairly straightforward. Describe the site first and explain what you did while you were there. If required, reflect on what you learned during your visit. No additional research or information is needed.

Writing a Visit Report

Explain the site's purpose, operations, and what happened during the visit. Identify the site's strengths and weaknesses, along with your recommendations for improvement. Include relevant photos or diagrams to supplement your report.

Describing the Site

Step 1 Look over the requirements of your visit report.

  • Reports are usually only 2-3 pages long, but in some cases, these reports may be much longer.
  • In some cases, you may be asked to give recommendations or opinions about the site. In other cases, you will be asked only to describe the site.
  • Ask your boss or instructor for models of other visit reports. If you can't get a model, look up samples online.

Step 2 Start the paper with general information about the visit.

  • If you visited a factory, explain what it is producing and what equipment it uses.
  • If you visited a construction site, describe what is being constructed and how far along the construction is. You should also describe the terrain of the site and the layout.
  • If you’re visiting a business, describe what the business does. State which department or part of the business you visited.
  • If you’re visiting a school, identify which grades they teach. Note how many students attend the school. Name the teachers whose classes you observed.

Step 4 Explain what happened during the visit in chronological order.

  • Who did you talk to? What did they tell you?
  • What did you see at the site?
  • What events took place? Did you attend a seminar, Q&A session, or interview?
  • Did you see any demonstrations of equipment or techniques?

Step 5 Summarize the operations at the site.

  • For example, at a car factory, describe whether the cars are made by robots or humans. Describe each step of the assembly line.
  • If you're visiting a business, talk about different departments within the business. Describe their corporate structure and identify what programs they use to conduct their business.

Reflecting on Your Visit

Step 1 Describe what you learned at the site if you’re a student.

  • Is there something you didn’t realize before that you learned while at the site?
  • Who at the site provided helpful information?
  • What was your favorite part of the visit and why?

Step 2 Identify the strengths and weaknesses of the site.

  • For example, you might state that the factory uses the latest technology but point out that employees need more training to work with the new equipment.
  • If there was anything important left out of the visit, state what it was. For example, maybe you were hoping to see the main factory floor or to talk to the manager.

Step 3 Provide recommendations for improvement if required.

  • Tailor your recommendations to the organization or institution that owns the site. What is practical and reasonable for them to do to improve their site?
  • Be specific. Don’t just say they need to improve infrastructure. State what type of equipment they need or give advice on how to improve employee morale.

Formatting Your Report

Step 1 Add a title page to the beginning of your report.

  • If you are following a certain style guideline, like APA or Chicago style, make sure to format the title page according to the rules of the handbook.

Step 2 Write in clear and objective language.

  • Don’t just say “the visit was interesting” or “I was bored.” Be specific when describing what you learned or saw.

Step 3 Include any relevant pictures if desired.

Madison Boehm

To write a visit report, start by including a general introduction that tells your audience where and when you visited, who your contact was, and how you got there. Once you have the introduction written out, take 1 to 2 paragraphs to describe the purpose of the site you visited, including details like the size and layout. If you visited a business, talk about what the business does and describe any specific departments you went to. Then, summarize what happened during your visit in chronological order. Make sure to include people you met and what they told you. How To Design an Inspiring School Visit Presentation

Author Bethany Hegedus is known for her inspiring, touching and thought-provoking presentations to both adults and children for her GRANDFATHER GANDHI picture books. Now she has a brand new picture book out, ALABAMA SPITFIRE: THE STORY OF HARPER LEE AND TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, and is creating new presentations to extend this wonderful story. We thought it would be interesting to get a behind-the-scenes look at how Bethany develops her programming and are thrilled that she agreed to pull back the curtain. Here’s a guest post from Bethany Hegedus on tips for designing an inspiring school visit presentation…

Bethany Hegedus

You either have a new book out or your first book out and it’s time to think about school visits. Yikes! How can you present your book in an engaging way to a room of 30 kids or an auditorium filled with 500 or more? What do you share from the process? How can you showcase your book’s themes?

Ah, first take a deep breath. Your job as an author/presenter is to inspire your audience. It’s about them—not about you.

After four years of presenting the two GRANDFATHER GANDHI books, with themes around anger, non-violence, waste and recycling, I have a new book out, one that doesn’t deal with any of those themes. ALABAMA SPITFIRE: THE STORY OF HARPER LEE AND TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD focuses on Nelle Harper Lee’s spitfire streak, her childhood friendship with Truman Capote—another of America’s great writers—and her grit and gumption in becoming an author and telling the story that she was born to tell and creating characters who the world has come to love and own, like no other author.

How did I approach designing inspiring presentations? Here’s how:

  • Find and focus on what will interest your audience. Make connections to them.

Be a spitfire with ALABAMA SPITFIRE

  • Find and focus on what will interest educators. Make connections to the classroom.

ALABAMA SPITFIRE is about a writer—and not just any writer—but America’s favorite writer. What did she read as a child? Sherlock Holmes mysteries. Did she write as a child? She sure did. Nelle and Truman wrote pot-boiler mysteries based on their small-town neighborhood’s goings on. Old Mrs. Busybody and The Fire and the Flame were two of their titles. On my school visits, I am going to do mini or extended writing exercises with students based on their observations of their hometowns. Will there be a budding Harper Lee or Truman Capote in the audience? Perhaps. But even more than inspiring America’s next great novelists, I hope to partner with educators to show writing as a skill we can all use. We all have something to say. Writing is our way to say it. And share it.

  • Focus on the struggle. Yours, your characters’, and/or your subjects’.

Understanding resilience, which society is focusing on—rightly—as a way to ensure future success is key. I share with audiences young and old, my ten+ year journey to publishing my first novel. My thirteen-year journey to publishing GRANDFATHER GANDHI, and now I can share with them the decades Nelle Harper Lee took in perfecting her craft, writing short story after short story before landing an agent. Then switching to a longer form: the novel and writing and revising, and revising more to create a book she thought no one would really take notice of that went on to win the Pulitzer and become one of the most beloved books of all time.

  • Be yourself. Be real. And allow your audiences to be real.

Alabama Spitfire: The Story of Harper Lee and To Kill a Mockingbird

I was in Virginia speaking after the white supremacist marches and violence this last summer. One girl, the only African-American student in a packed auditorium, who I had called on many times, said at the end of the presentation that she was “mad at that man that killed that woman, running her over with his car.” I told her she had a right to be mad. I was mad. Arun Gandhi was mad…and if still living Dr. King and Mahatma Gandhi would be mad too. Our anger was ok. It pointed to something unjust and unfair had occurred. Now, what were we going to do with our anger? Lash out at someone else? Lash inward at ourselves? Or could we talk about our anger and let it move us to action? I shared how the terrorist attacks on 9/11, of which I am a survivor, led me to ask Arun Gandhi to work with me.

What could this student do? I invited her to speak with me after the presentation and we had a long talk about her difficulties being “the only black girl” in the 3rd grade, and how the man who killed that woman in Virginia were white—just like I was. We talked about what being an ally meant and how hard it was to figure out who was our ally or not.

Watch Bethany get real and talk about her own inspiration from Harper Lee and To Kill a Mockingbird and about Harper Lee and Truman Capote’s beginnings as young writers .

Thank you, Bethany!

School visits are essential for many teachers and educators to gain knowledge about a particular school they are visiting, observing how teachers there are facilitating student learning, and getting informed by the school administrators about their role in establishing a productive learning area for the students. In this section, we provide some helpful tips that you should think consciously in writing your report format :

First of all, you need to define your goals while visiting a school. What are the unique points in this particular school, as well as the teachers, instructors, school faculty, and students? What do you want to learn from visiting this school? How can the experience in the school visit help you in enhancing your teaching methods? Consider these questions when you think about your goals statement for your report.

Try your best in interacting and being up close with other teachers and educational facilitators through classroom visits, panel discussions, or sitting in on teacher sample planning meetings. Know about their experiences in teaching and learn from them. So, you must concentrate even more on learning about the policies and processes at the teacher and administrator level. Plus, figure out how you can implement helpful policies or cancel policies at your school that are not effective.

3.  Talk with the students

Also, you can talk with some students report of the school you’re visiting through the guided school tours and class visits. Hear their thoughts and opinions about their experience in studying and how the school helped them in general.

Then, you need to collect valuable information of your school visit from the resources given to you. Usually, schools and academies provide the visitors some panelist presentations and information on the school site in the sample forms of brochures.

A School Visit and Observation Journal Essay

In my first visit to a school, I met with teachers in the kindergarten and primary grades. The teachers said that developing a positive self-concept was their primary task to promote a positive atmosphere within the classroom. This positive atmosphere enabled the young children to gain a positive yet realistic image of themselves as learners. It also avoids any negativity as much as possible. The teachers also have a positive attitude towards the young pupils. This positive attitude results in a good learning atmosphere. Most of the teachers believe that their students will achieve their goals. The teachers in the school influence the development of the positive self-concept. The teachers said that they achieve this by providing a democratic classroom atmosphere where every pupil is supposed to think of himself as a responsible citizen and where each pupil feels free to express his opinions frankly and openly.

The school has very intelligent and disciplined pupils. For example, there was a certain student by the name of Peter who welcomed us very warmly in the school by citing a poem which left everybody feeling welcomed. The physical environment of the classrooms encourages student learning. The classrooms have movable furniture which can be easily reorganized and can be used as individual student work areas. There are individual small flat-topped tables which are accompanied by comfortable chairs that fit easily under the tables. The chairs promote good posture and encourage face-to-face interaction. The classrooms also have enough space to allow movement activities and ease of access in or out of the classroom particularly for those students with special needs.

The classrooms in the school are student-centered. High performance was witnessed in the school because it was open, friendly, and culturally inviting. Instructional arrangements also allowed the pupils to interact with one another and use collaborative learning techniques. Teachers organized or wrote their own curriculum. Rather than organizing by subject area, teachers aligned themselves more by grade level and worked together to write different units or design instructional materials, activities, and strategies geared to meet essential elements of the curriculum. Textbooks were acknowledged but teachers made great use of the curriculum they had developed within their grade, school, or district. Most teachers stressed that they rarely used textbooks for anything more than a resource for a homework assignment.

The school uses cognitive theory which stresses the importance of what goes on inside the learner. The teachers help the students to perceive information, interpret it based on what is known, and then reorganize the information into new insights or understanding. Cognitive learning theory includes several known perspectives, such as gestation, information processing, human development, social constructivist, and social cognition theory.

On observing a kindergarten for one hour, I realized that the classroom was based on the more contemporary emergent literacy model. This was based on three aspects which include symbolic transformation for example using a toy banana to represent a telephone. The second aspect is meta play which is linked to metalinguistic awareness and involves children’s awareness about the structures and functions of language. The third aspect is narrative which helps the children to think about and respond to a text.

In third-grade classrooms, phonics and spelling instructions are used. The teachers describe a practical, easy-to-use method of teaching children how to spell. Practice is encouraged and monitored and teaching occurs in short sessions each and every day. In order to teach reading, the students say the words and sentences corresponding to the text and understand.

Find out how a high school teacher like Jamie Barkin uses Piktochart to improve learning in the classroom for her students.

Pro tip: make your presentation as interactive as possible. Students have an attention span of two to three minutes per year of age. To keep minds from wandering off, include some interactive games or activities in the lesson. For example, if you conducted a lesson on the respiratory system, you could ask them to practice breathing techniques.

Maintain eye contact with your students, and you’ll get instant feedback on how interested they are in the interactive presentation.

Make School Presentation Visuals Without the Hassle of Making Them From Scratch

What the New Overtime Rule Means for Workers

Collage shows four professionals in business casual clothing.

One of the basic principles of the American workplace is that a hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay. Simply put, every worker’s time has value. A cornerstone of that promise is the  Fair Labor Standards Act ’s (FLSA) requirement that when most workers work more than 40 hours in a week, they get paid more. The  Department of Labor ’s new overtime regulation is restoring and extending this promise for millions more lower-paid salaried workers in the U.S.

Overtime protections have been a critical part of the FLSA since 1938 and were established to protect workers from exploitation and to benefit workers, their families and our communities. Strong overtime protections help build America’s middle class and ensure that workers are not overworked and underpaid.

Some workers are specifically exempt from the FLSA’s minimum wage and overtime protections, including bona fide executive, administrative or professional employees. This exemption, typically referred to as the “EAP” exemption, applies when:

1. An employee is paid a salary,

2. The salary is not less than a minimum salary threshold amount, and

3. The employee primarily performs executive, administrative or professional duties.

While the department increased the minimum salary required for the EAP exemption from overtime pay every 5 to 9 years between 1938 and 1975, long periods between increases to the salary requirement after 1975 have caused an erosion of the real value of the salary threshold, lessening its effectiveness in helping to identify exempt EAP employees.

The department’s new overtime rule was developed based on almost 30 listening sessions across the country and the final rule was issued after reviewing over 33,000 written comments. We heard from a wide variety of members of the public who shared valuable insights to help us develop this Administration’s overtime rule, including from workers who told us: “I would love the opportunity to...be compensated for time worked beyond 40 hours, or alternately be given a raise,” and “I make around $40,000 a year and most week[s] work well over 40 hours (likely in the 45-50 range). This rule change would benefit me greatly and ensure that my time is paid for!” and “Please, I would love to be paid for the extra hours I work!”

The department’s final rule, which will go into effect on July 1, 2024, will increase the standard salary level that helps define and delimit which salaried workers are entitled to overtime pay protections under the FLSA.

Starting July 1, most salaried workers who earn less than $844 per week will become eligible for overtime pay under the final rule. And on Jan. 1, 2025, most salaried workers who make less than $1,128 per week will become eligible for overtime pay. As these changes occur, job duties will continue to determine overtime exemption status for most salaried employees.

Who will become eligible for overtime pay under the final rule? Currently most salaried workers earning less than $684/week. Starting July 1, 2024, most salaried workers earning less than $844/week. Starting Jan. 1, 2025, most salaried workers earning less than $1,128/week. Starting July 1, 2027, the eligibility thresholds will be updated every three years, based on current wage data. DOL.gov/OT

The rule will also increase the total annual compensation requirement for highly compensated employees (who are not entitled to overtime pay under the FLSA if certain requirements are met) from $107,432 per year to $132,964 per year on July 1, 2024, and then set it equal to $151,164 per year on Jan. 1, 2025.

Starting July 1, 2027, these earnings thresholds will be updated every three years so they keep pace with changes in worker salaries, ensuring that employers can adapt more easily because they’ll know when salary updates will happen and how they’ll be calculated.

The final rule will restore and extend the right to overtime pay to many salaried workers, including workers who historically were entitled to overtime pay under the FLSA because of their lower pay or the type of work they performed.

We urge workers and employers to visit  our website to learn more about the final rule.

Over 90% of trans youths live in states with bills that target their rights, report says

A protester's sign reads, ''protect trans kids'' at a demonstration

More than 9 in 10 (93%) transgender youths ages 13 to 17 in the U.S. live in states that have already passed or are currently considering bills to restrict their access to transition-related health care, school bathrooms, sports participation and pronoun use at school, according to a new report .

The report, published Tuesday by the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law, estimated the number of transgender youths affected by these four types of restrictive measures, which LGBTQ advocates typically oppose, and two other types of legislation that advocates typically favor: “shield” laws for transition-related care and bans on so-called conversion therapy. The researchers focused on previously enacted laws and measures that are still being considered in statehouses.

There are approximately 300,000 trans youths ages 13 to 17 in the U.S., and, according to the report, 38% of them live in the 24 states that have enacted bans on transition-related medical care for minors (including puberty blockers, hormone therapy and surgery); 40% live in the 27 states where their access to sports participation is restricted or state policy encourages such restrictions; 13% live in the 13 states that restrict their access to school bathrooms and other sex-segregated facilities; and 16% live in the 14 states that have restricted or banned their use of pronouns that don’t align with their birth sex in schools or other state-run facilities.

The Williams Institute report also found that 123,600 trans youths, or 41%, live in 16 states that had a ban on transition-related medical care pending in the 2024 legislative session, and 102,300, or 34%, live in 14 states with a restriction on sports participation pending.

The laws are among the wave of bills targeting LGBTQ people introduced by Republican lawmakers in recent years. In 2023, conservative state lawmakers introduced more than 500 such bills, breaking the previous year’s record of more than 300. So far this year, state lawmakers have introduced 487 such bills , according to the American Civil Liberties Union.

The Williams Institute also looked at measures that LGBTQ advocates have generally supported, and found that nearly half, or 48%, of trans youths in the U.S. live in the 14 states and Washington, D.C., that have passed “shield” laws on transition-related care. These laws, such as one signed by New York Gov. Kathy Hochul last year , bar state courts from enforcing other states’ laws that could allow a child to be taken away from their parents if their parents provided transition-related medical care, for example. Some of the shield laws also protect doctors who provide care to minors who travel from states where such care is banned.

The report also found that about two-thirds of trans youths live in the 27 states and Washington, D.C., that prohibit so-called conversion therapy, a discredited practice that attempts to change an LGBTQ person’s sexual orientation or gender identity and has been found to have negative mental health effects .

The types of laws that trans youths are affected by — positive versus negative — are largely determined by their geographic location, the report found. For example, 85% of trans youths in the South and 40% of trans youths in the Midwest live in a state that has enacted one of the four types of restrictive laws the Williams Institute evaluated. All trans youths living in the Northeast and 97% of trans youths in the West live in a state with either a shield law, a conversion therapy ban or both.

“For the second straight year, hundreds of bills impacting transgender youth were introduced in state legislatures,” the report’s lead author, Elana Redfield, a federal policy director at the Williams Institute, said in a statement. “The diverging legal landscape has created a deep divide in the rights and protections for transgender youth and their families across the country.”

Blinken Says Genocide in Xinjiang Is Ongoing in Report Ahead of China Visit

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Beijing is continuing to commit genocide and crimes against humanity against Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities in its western Xinjiang province, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a report published on Monday, ahead of his planned visit to China this week.

The State Department's annual human rights report, which documents abuses recorded all over the world during the previous calendar year, repeated language from previous years on the treatment of Muslims in Xinjiang, but the publication raises the issue ahead of delicate talks, including on the war in Ukraine and global trade, between the top U.S. diplomat and Chinese counterparts.

In a preface, Blinken said the report "documents ongoing grave human rights abuses in the People's Republic of China (PRC)."

"For example, in Xinjiang, the PRC continues to carry out genocide, crimes against humanity, forced labor, and other human rights violations against predominantly Muslim Uyghurs and members of other ethnic and religious minority groups," Blinken said in the preface.

The section of Monday's report on China details the detention of more than one million people in camps and prisons and the use of re-education camps in Xinjiang, among other abuses committed against the broader Chinese population.

China has vigorously denied abuses in Xinjiang and says it established "vocational training centers" to curb terrorism, separatism and religious radicalism.

Blinken when he took office in 2021 endorsed a determination by his predecessor that China's actions amounted to genocide, and he has raised the issue in meetings with Chinese officials.

The annual human rights report has in recent years echoed that position and said the genocide is ongoing, but Xinjiang has featured less prominently in direct contacts between U.S. and Chinese officials.

A senior State Department official briefing reporters on Friday on Blinken's trip said human rights would be among the issues raised by Blinken with Chinese officials, but did not mention the situation in Xinjiang.

Pitt Scheduling Visit For Miami Transfer DE

The Pitt Panthters reached out to a top Miami Transfer DE and are scheduling a visit with him.

  • Author: Dominic Campbell

In this story:

PITTSBURGH -- The Pitt Panthers have worked to address their lack of defensive ends following the end of spring practices, as they reached out to a valued transfer recently.

Miami transfer edge rusher Jayden Wayne spoke to Steve Wiltfong of On3 and said that Pitt, along with ACC foes Florida State, Cal, Louisville and Virginia Tech, Big Ten schools in Michigan State Nebraska, Oregon, UCLA, USC, Washington and Wisconsin, SEC schools in Mississippi State, Missouri and Ole Miss, plus James Madison and Kansas contacted him following his entry into the portal this week.

Pitt, along with Cal, Kansas UCLA and Washington, are all trying to bring him in for a visit as well.

Wayne came out of high school as one of the best players in the country. Playing for powerhouse IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., he made 44 tackles and nine sacks in his senior season, but also excelled at wide receiver, making 18 catches for 269 yards and five touchdowns.

He was a four-star consensus recruit, with 247Sports ranking him No. 82 in the nation, No. 13 edge rusher and No. 21 in Florida in the Class of 2023, respectively.

Standing at 6-foot-6 and 245 pounds, Wayne is a towering figure that any team would want on their defensive line.

He played in eight games as a true freshman last season, making 13 tackles (four solo), 0.5 tackles for loss and 0.5 sacks.

Wayne hails from Tacoma, Wash., which is why so many west coast teams are coming in for his services.

Pitt has contacted and offered a few defensive ends since the transfer portal opened earlier last week. This includes Arkansas State's Keyron Crawford, who transferred to Auburn , Youngstown State's Deamontae Diggs and Illinois' Anthony Johnson .

The Panthers lost almost all of their defensive line production from last season due to graduation and transfers. Defensive tackles in David Green, Tyler Bentley and Devin Danielson graduated, while both defensive tackle Deandre Jules and defensive end Samuel Okunlola transferred to South Carolina and Colorado, respectively, after the season.

The defensive line also lost two defensive ends following spring practices to the portal, in starter Dayon Hayes, who committted to Colorado, and redshirt freshman Antonio Camon.

Sixth year Bam Brima, who has only started three games, is the most experienced defensive lineman, as fellow sixth year defensive end Nate Temple will sit this year due to injury. Brima is likely to play defensive tackle this season, instead of defensive end as he has done previously.

The defensive ends that Pitt has include Kansas State transfer/fifth year Nate Matlack, redshirt sophomore Jimmy Scott, redshirt freshmen Maverick Gracio and Clemson transfer David Ojiegbe, as well as freshmen Zachary Crothers and Sincere Edwards.
