Inverness Tours - We’ll share yesterday’s stories today, to make memories for your tomorrows!

We’ll share yesterday’s stories today, to make memories for your tomorrows!

Yesterday’s stories today.

Experience tours seeing Scottish mountain peaks against the sky and waterfalls plunging into spray-filled depths; hearing of myths and legends, heroes and villains, ghosts and ghouls; visiting Harry Potter and Outlander sites, Inverness whisky bars and the Edinburgh Tattoo! All of these have the same thing in common – they are part of yesterday’s many stories, which can be retold by us for you, today.

Memories for your tomorrows

Inverness Tour Guides enjoy taking unique journeys with you. Choose one of the many tours we have made for you here, or ask us for something custom. Either way we can guarantee that every tour is individually shaped by the questions you ask, as we travel together. From the first hello we will craft days just for you, where you can create the best lifelong memories.

We are above Gairloch Beach on the NC500 - Magical Wester Ross Tour. The sun has just set, behind the low dark-silhouetted hills on the far side of the bay. The overwhelming shades of sky, sea and sand are purple and indigo through to blue. The land is to the left, and along the distant horizon, and the ocean is to the right. At the far end of the crescent of sand there are the distant figures of half a dozen people walking. Closer to us, and immediately below, is a single figure with a collie dog.

This tour was absolutely SENSATIONAL! Excellent small group tour!! We were fortunate to have Helen (whose historical knowledge was excellent) AND to only have 8 in our group. It was personal and comfortable and not rushed.

Highlights of Scotland Tour

Highlights of Scotland

This was my second G Adventures tour and it proved to be as enjoyable as the first one, which was the main reason my wife and I booked it. The small size of the tour group and the variety of people made it all the better. The tour offered a good balance between structured visits of major attractions and free time to explore on our own. I would not hesitate to recommend a G Adventures tour to anyone seeking a guided travel experience in the company of other like-minded travelers.

Loch Ness, Inverness & The Highlands - from Edinburgh Tour

Loch Ness, Inverness & The Highlands - from Edinburgh

Eilean Donan castle and the Isle of Skye from Inverness. What a brilliant tour, it surpassed our expectations. The driver/guide Sandy was excellent. Definitely recommend it. We were so lucky it was sunshine and blue skies all day in a week of rain, snow and cold. An absolute gem.

Scotland Tour

It was a good trip seeing a lot of Scotland and the tour guide was very good. However a few things to improve are: There were too many people in the group so didn't really interact with the rest of them and the language difference didn't help either as I didn't realise that most of them spoke Spanish so the guide had to say everything in 2 languages. There was confusion on the trip as in the main Itinerary, it only mentioned breakfast included but when you looked into individual days it said dinner included, so didn't match. I feel that at least 1 dinner would have been nice to help with interacting with the group. I was a bit disappointed that the distillery changed days instead of the 1st day as I would have liked a bit more time to see Edinburgh especially as it was nice that day. Also the day in Edinburgh shouldn't be on a Saturday as it was too busy. A few places I felt rushed like Fort William as we only had time to get out, see it a bit, have a hot drink and toilet and then go but to be honest there wasn't much there so could have gone anywhere really. It was nice to see the castles except it would have good if Edinburgh castle had been included, but also maybe see something else for a variety like a mine or cave, or we did pass a cable car and that would have been nice. But overall it was a nice trip seeing places around Scotland in the time.

Orkney & The Far North 3 Day Tour Tour

Orkney & The Far North 3 Day Tour

I had booked a small group tour on purpose so I was extremely disappointed when an old bus with people already on it showed up. I was on a scouting trip for the university I work for to find good vendors to use when I take 10 students around Scotland to learn history and culture summer 2020. I will avoid Tourradar, because you didn't keep you word on what was advertised and I will avoid Highland Experience. Large busses have a hard time parking and it takes so long for everyone to get on and off. This particular bus was very old with a broken drivers window, horribly loud grinding motor, no wifi, music system archaic. The driver, Daniel, was fantastic. He managed the giant old bus beast very well, and he always was there to make sure I was ok. I felt very safe and grateful for his sense of duty. I was traveling alone, so knowing that my driver wouldn't leave without me and checked on my often was a great comfort. I hope this message gets to his managers.

Not too much, not too little, Goldilocks would take this tour because it is Just Right. Seriously, you see and experience so much during this tour, the pace is not overwhelming so you can soak it all in. I was a first-time solo traveller on this trip, and met so many awesome people, including our phenomenal tour guide, Branka! Outlander Tour of Scotland

It finally happened. After 2 false starts, due to Covid, we were finally able to complete our tour and we weren’t let down. Spirit Journeys, specifically Julia was incredible to work with. Over the course of two years I had many changes and questions for her and she extremely helpful and courteous in her responses. My wife and I would discuss nightly what the best part of the tour was. Now that it is all over, we’ve come to the conclusion that Roger, our tour guide was the best part of the tour. He was extremely knowledgeable of Outlander and Scotland. There was no question that his goal was to provide us with the best tour possible and he did. Cuddos to Tour Radar, Spirit Journeys, Julia, and Roger.

As we venture further west the scenery becomes more dramatic; as the mist swirls you will feel that you have truly arrived in the Scottish Highlands. As the road winds between high hills, past dark lochans and through windswept glens your guide will fill you in on the tragic history of this area, and how this history led to the desolate landscapes that you see today.

After passing the 5 Sisters of Kintail – one of Scotland’s most recognisable mountain massifs – we will soon see Loch Duich, which heralds our welcome to Scotland’s wonderful west coast.

Highland Cows

Highland Cows

Highland cows have long vied with Nessie to be prized as Scotland’s most iconic creature. However, whilst we can only claim to have had the occasional Nessie sighting on this tour, thankfully these much-coveted coos are not quite as coy in front of cameras! On the vast majority of tours we will be able to stop and say hello to these much-loved hairy beasts.

Please note that we can never guarantee to see them, as sometimes farmers move their cattle to different fields, and seasonality plays a part in this too (we are less likely to see them in October).  Also, for anyone joining the tour in Drumnadrochit or Invermoriston, you will not get a chance to see them.

Eilean Donan Castle

Eilean Donan Castle

Eilean Donan Castle is said to be one of the most photographed castles in the world, and justifiably so; the 13th Century fortification dominates the small tidal island it sits on, and is surrounded by majestic mountain scenery.

Aside from its presence on innumerable postcards and shortbread tins you may well recognise Eilean Donan from films including Highlander, James Bond – The World Is Not Enough and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, a Bollywood classic.

We will spend around 15 minutes at a classic viewpoint across the water from the castle. Please note that there is not enough time to go into the castle – this is a photo stop only.

Portree

Set within a pretty natural harbour, and surrounded by rocky cliffs and rolling hills, Portree is a beautiful place to explore. With its quirky shops, cute cafes and interesting sights you will certainly find plenty to occupy you during our 30 – 40 minute stop here. Your guide will give you some top tips on the coach, and will also point you in the direction of the harbour viewpoint; from here you can admire the pretty pastel-coloured houses that the town is famous for.  Alternatively, you may wish to take a short hike up to the top of the Apothecary Tower, where you can enjoy stunning vistas of the area.

If you pre-ordered lunch from the Isle of Skye Baking Company at the start of the tour then your guide will pick it up here, and will deliver it to you back on the mini-coach. If you have not taken this option then you will want to use your time in Portree to grab some lunch. There are plenty of options in the town centre; from a local deli serving seafood rolls and home-made cakes to a traditional fish and chip shop and two Skye bakeries, you will definitely find something to suit you (but please note that Portree is very busy at lunchtime, so you may have to wait in line for quite a while!).

Old Man of Storr

Old Man of Storr

As we venture further north we enter a supernatural and dramatic landscape which was created by volcanic activity millions of years ago. A short photo stop at a loch-side viewpoint gives you a chance to admire the unique rock formation of the Old Man of Storr. This 50 metre high pinnacle juts out from the awe-inspiring Trotternish Ridge and will be widely recognised from feature films including Stardust, The Wicker Man, Prometheus and The BFG.

We spend around 10 minutes here, and may stop at a second viewpoint too (weather and time permitting).

Kilt Rock

It also boasts a waterfall that tumbles 60 metres (180 feet) into the Sound of Raasay below – a truly enthralling sight, and one made even more special when the wind blows the waterfall back up the cliff!

Trotternish

Trotternish

At around 2pm we will begin our journey back down Skye’s most northerly peninsula; the Trotternish. As you marvel at the majestic scenery from a completely different angle, your guide will fill you in on its 190 million year old stones, Jurassic fossils, dinosaur footprints and giant lava blocks, which have led to this area being referred to as Skye’s, “Theatre of Geology”.

Whilst the Fairy Pools have become one of Skye’s most popular sights in recent years, we feel strongly that a trip to the island is incomplete without seeing the incredible scenery of the Trotternish Peninsula. As we journey back down south we are sure that you will now agree with us!

Fairy Pools

Fairy Pools

The Fairy Pools are a series of beautiful rock pools and waterfalls which are famed for their crystal clear blue waters, and their stunning Cuillin mountain backdrop.  We will spend around 75 – 90 minutes here, to give you plenty of time to enjoy this wonderful sight.

The scenic walk to the first pool takes around 20 minutes (distance is 0.7 miles) and the most impressive waterfall is 5 minutes further on (0.9 miles total).  Most guests spend their time around this area, admiring the crystal clear waters of the pools and their gushing waterfalls. Photo opportunities abound!

For those keen to get off-the-beaten-track and take some stunning photos you can venture on up the path to the other pools further upstream – by walking another 15 – 20 minutes (0.6 miles) you will pretty much have the path to yourself.

Please be aware that the walk to the Fairy Pools and back is a total of around 1.5 miles and will take around 40 minutes, so you do require a moderate level of fitness for this part of the tour.

For those who do not feel fit enough to embark on this hike at the Fairy Pools you are still more than welcome to come on the tour. Speak to your guide and he will be happy to take you on a 5 minute drive to the lesser-known secret fairy pools instead – this sight is equally as special but quieter and more easily accessible, with no walking required.

The Journey Home

The Journey Home

After so many world-class sights ticked off your list today, you will have an hour or so to sit back, relax and take in the scenery and stories before our final stop.

We will drive along the shores of Loch Duich before reaching Glen Shiel, site of the legendary Battle of Glenshiel. This battle is notable as, during the 1719 Jacobite uprising, it was the only one to be effectively ended by the Government. Your guide will also explain about a more unusual aspect of the battle; the involvement of both the Spanish and the Dutch. There are various interesting Jacobite military sights which will be pointed out along the way.

As we pass Loch Cluanie keep an eye out for the historic bridge and buildings which have been submerged since the damming of the loch in 1957 – you can catch glimpses of these when the water level is very low.

Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle

Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle

Towards the end of our action-packed journey we will travel back along the shores of Loch Ness. This time, we will stop at the castle we admired in the morning (it will seem like a lifetime ago after today’s epic adventure!). Urquhart Castle is best viewed from above for wonderful views of the medieval ruins, which sit upon a stubby peninsula jutting out into the inky waters of the mysterious loch.

We are confident that you will return to Inverness with memories to last a lifetime, and having fallen in love with the place we feel so lucky to call home.

Why should we choose WOW to take us to Skye? +

There are a number of companies in Inverness offering tours to Skye, and we appreciate that it can be difficult to decide which company to use.  We wanted to summarise the main benefits of coming on our tour, so that you can make the best choice for your group.  So..here goes…

  • First and foremost, we have the most comprehensive tour itinerary available from Inverness; our tour is the only one to include all of the sights in Northern Skye (Portree, Trotternish Peninsula, Old Man of Storr and Cuillin Mountains) as well as giving you the opportunity to hike to the Fairy Pools , and see Eilean Donan Castle and Loch Ness/Urquhart Castle en-route.  It truly is the ultimate tour of Skye!
  • We are the only company offering a seat reservation system for our front row (plus second row and extra legroom) seats so, if taking uninterrupted photos is important to you, this will be a great benefit.
  • We are the only company offering convenient pick up and drop off at two city locations , ensuring that your day is as relaxed and enjoyable as possible
  • We are the only company offering free pick-up and drop-off in Drumnadrochit and Invermoriston (for Fort William) giving you the flexibility to stay wherever suits you best.
  • We have the smartest and most comfortable tour vehicle (ok, this is partly subjective, but we are pretty confident!)
  • We are the only local company offering coach tours to Skye from Inverness (we operate from Tomatin, 20 miles south of Inverness, and the company owner is an Invernessian born and bred!).  We think that this is important, as it means that the money you pay for your ticket goes back into the local economy.
  • Skye has a fragile economy, which is very dependent on tourism, and we want to ensure that the local community see the benefit of our tours.  Consequently, we work with fantastic local suppliers on all of our tours.
  • We are the only company to offer a lunch pre-ordering service on the tour – we work with the Isle of Skye Baking Company in Portree to offer this self-service option, in order to save your sightseeing time
  • We have been awarded 5 Star Tour status by our national tourism organisation, Visit Scotland, for the last eight years, which means that they have rated our tours as “exceptional”
  • We have over 22 00 5 star reviews on TripAdvisor and are the top-rated tour company in Inverness out of over 130 (around 700 of these reviews are specifically for our Skye tours – that’s a lot of very happy customers!)

We very much hope that you will choose to come with us to Skye, and are looking forward to meeting you, and showing you the best the island has to offer, very soon!

Why should I book this Skye tour direct? +

We sell our tours through a number of online agents.  However, we would strongly encourage you to book directly on our own website, for the following reasons;

  • Convenient pick-up and drop-off If you book direct we offer pick-up and drop-off from two convenient locations in central Inverness!  We do this in order to make your day as relaxing and enjoyable as possible.
  • Seat upgrade options By booking direct you can purchase optional front row, second row and extra legroom upgrades.  So, if unparalleled views or the ability to stretch out are important to you, be sure to book direct and take advantage of this option.
  • The best seats All of the seats on our vehicles are comfortable with great views.  However, customers who book direct will be given preferential seating.
  • Excellent customer service We are a small family-run business, and we are always on hand to give you quick and accurate responses to your queries or requests, either by phone or email.  If you require to change or cancel your booking, or want to switch to another tour, we will do this quickly and easily, and will be as flexible as we possibly can in response to your requests.  It is our business, and we really care about ensuring that every one of our guests has an excellent experience, from the minute you land on our website, right through to dropping you off back at your hotel.
  • Support the Highlands If you book with an agent 25% of the ticket price goes to an international corporation.  That means that 25% less money is flowing into the fragile economy of the Scottish Highlands.  Please support our small local business by coming to us direct.

We very much look forward to showing you the Highlands!

What times does the Skye tour start and finish? +

This tour departs from Union Street (in Inverness city centre) at 8.15am. Please ensure that you are ready to board the bus at 8.05am as we will leave promptly at 8.15am (0815), and are unable to wait for any latecomers, and it is not possible to catch up with the tour.  The tour will return to Inverness city centre at approximately 8.15pm (2015). It is possible that we may return a bit later than this, although we always try to keep to our schedule as much as possible.

We also offer a few other pick up locations.  These will be available to select when booking, with a specific pick-up time and place provided in your email confirmation.

Where is the pick-up point in Inverness? +

Our main departure point is at 15 Union Street in Inverness city centre. Look out for the kilted WOW guide and WOW-branded coach and you won’t miss us!

When you book you will be given the option to book from a few other pick up locations, as an alternative to the bus station.  Further details on these pick ups are provided in the next FAQ, and precise timing information will be provided in your booking confirmation email.

Can I join the tour anywhere else? +

Yes, as a thank you for booking direct, via our own website, we are delighted to be able to offer you the following alternative pick ups:

  • Tomnahurich Street (for Columba Hotel , Palace Hotel, S trathness House, Premier Inn (Inverness Centre) Huntly Street, Coo’s Guest House , Ardross Street B&Bs,  Aye Stay B&B ,  Lairds Lodge  and B&Bs on Glenurquhart Road, Ballifeary Road and Bruce Gardens ) (8.20am)
  • Drumnadrochit (8.45am) – see information on our Ultimate Isle of Skye Tour from Drumnadrochit page
  • Invermoriston (9.15am) – see information on our Ultimate Isle of Skye Tour from Invermoriston/Fort William/Fort Augustus page

Please just select your preferred location when booking and we will collect you there in the morning, and drop you off again in the evening.

Timings above are approximate and are subject to change – more precise timings will be provided on your booking confirmation email.

What is the difference between your standard and flex tickets? +

On all standard and group rate tickets you can cancel your tour and get a 100% refund up to 48 hours prior to the tour start time (with the exception of any seat upgrade fees, which are non refundable).

For those who wish to have increased flexibility we also offer a flex ticket, which enables you to cancel your tour and get a 100% refund up to 24 hours prior to the start time (with the exception of any seat upgrade fees, which are non refundable).

Can I reserve seats on the tour? +

Firstly, it is worth mentioning that all seats offer great views and plenty of legroom. However, many guests have seating preferences so, in response to this, we give you the opportunity, on our Ultimate Isle of Skye Tour and our Invergordon shore tours, to book the following chargeable upgrades;

  • 4 front row seats – these seats give you unparalleled views out of the front windows, and the opportunity to disembark first at every stop.  They are, justifiably, our most popular seats.
  • 4 second row seats – many guests prefer to sit near the front of the coach, or be reassured that you will be seated together if they are a couple/group, both of which you get with this option.  These seats also have a little more legroom than the front row seats.
  • 2 extra legroom seats – these are situated near the back of the coach and have approximately 50% more legroom than regular seats.  They are particularly suited to those who are tall, or like to stretch out.

The price of the upgrades vary depending on the option and tour selected, with prices between £5 and £20 per person (note that any fees paid for seat upgrades are non-refundable if you cancel your tour).  If they are available, upgrades will be given as an option when booking.  Please note that it does not make any difference which side of the coach you sit on, so we don’t take requests for specific sides.

The rest of our seating will be allocated by your driver guide and we will do our best to seat all groups/couples together. If you are unhappy with your seat please let your tour guide know and he will do his best to accommodate your requests, although obviously many guests would prefer a window seat so it is not possible for everyone to have these!

The opportunity to purchase seat upgrades is a definite advantage of booking with us directly, through our own website.  These upgrades are not available if our tour is booked through online agents.

Please note that seat upgrades are not currently available on our Skye Explorer Hiking Tour. The reason for this is because we have less time on the coach and use a smaller 16-seater vehicle for this tour. Consequently, seat position is not as crucial, and we seat guests according to group composition (we have four single window seats, four double window seats and four seats together at the back).

What sort of vehicle do you use? +

For our Ultimate Isle of Skye Tour we generally use one of our two 33-seater mini-coaches, both of which were built to our precise specifications, to ensure the highest levels of passenger comfort. They are very well-appointed with panoramic windows, comfortable reclining seats and USB ports under every seat. You can rest assured that you will be able to relax and enjoy the majestic scenery in complete comfort. You can read more about our coaches here.

On occasion we may use our smaller, 16-seater executive mini-coach.  It offers all of the same features as described above, but also boasts a panoramic glass roof, for that extra special view!

How often are bathroom/toilet stops? +

There are five main stops where toilets/bathrooms can be accessed (timings are for our 0815 departures and can vary slightly but this gives you a very good indication of time between comfort breaks).

  • 8.50am (Drumnadrochit)
  • 10.00am (Eilean Donan Castle)
  • 11.15 – 12pm (Portree)
  • 2.40pm (Portree)
  • 3.30 – 5pm (Fairy Pools)
  • 6pm (Eilean Donan Castle)
  • 8pm (if required, Drumnadrochit)

Outside of these times it may be possible to make unscheduled bathroom stops – please just ask your driver guide to see what they can do for you, as the last thing we ever want is for our passengers is to be uncomfortable.

Will we be stopping for coffee/snacks enroute? +

We would recommend that you purchase your lunch and any snacks in Portree at 11.15am (you have approximately 40 minutes here and there are a number of cafes, bakeries and shops).  This is the one and only opportunity on the tour to purchase food and drink on the tour, due to the lack of any shops/cafes on our route.  Consequently, we would also recommend that you bring some light snacks and drinks with you on the coach, in order to keep your energy up for the adventure!

Where will we get lunch & dinner? +

We are delighted to be working with our friends at The Isle of Skye Baking Company in Portree to offer a delicious packed lunch option.  At the start of the tour you will be given access to a menu with QR code.  By scanning this QR code or visiting the website you can order and pay for a lunch, which your driver guide will collect in Portree, and deliver to you upon your return to the mini-coach there.

We offer this service to enable you to save time, and focus on seeing the sights of Portree.  If you do not wish to take this option you are welcome to bring your own food with you, or pick something up during our 40 minutes in Portree.  Please note that there is definitely not time for a sit-down lunch in Portree.

The Isle of Skye Baking Co. offers a variety of quiches (e.g. bacon & leek or panfried mushroom & roast aubergine), filled breads, scones (e.g. cheese or treacle), cakes (e.g. sticky toffee pudding cake, courgette & walnut cake) shortbread (various specialty flavours include lime & coconut and lemon & poppy) and oatcakes plus a limited selection of soft drinks.  They are all made on the premises and their exclusive WOW menu changes on a daily basis.  They also offer vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options.  Prices vary, from around £4 for a filled bread, to £8.50 for a filled bread and sweet selection.  They also sell some lovely edible souvenirs, which you can add to your order!

We are delighted to support this wonderful local business who, like ourselves, pride themselves in providing excellent products and service to their customers.

The tour returns to Inverness city centre at around 8.15pm.  For dinner we would recommend booking a table in Inverness and we will send you a list of a few of our favourites a few days prior to the tour.

What should I wear on this tour? +

On this tour you spend approximately 1 1/4 hours at the Fairy Pools;  the location is windy and exposed, with absolutely no shelter from the elements, so it is imperative that you are appropriately dressed for this.  We really cannot stress this enough – if you are soaking wet you will struggle to enjoy the rest of the day.  As we say in Scotland, “there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing”!

We would strongly recommend wearing hiking boots with ankle support (as a minimum you will need sturdy comfortable trainers/sneakers) as the path is often muddy and slippery. We would also strongly recommend bringing a waterproof jacket, and ideally waterproof trousers/pants too (note that umbrellas are not appropriate on Skye – they just blow inside out and are rendered useless very quickly).  In addition to these essentials we would suggest wearing layers, including a thick sweater/fleece option, and bringing a hat and gloves and warm jacket in your bag.

Even if the sun is shining brightly when you leave Inverness, they do say that you only really experience Scotland when you see four seasons in one day, so please be prepared!

You can read our blog here for further details about what we recommend bringing/wearing on this tour.

How much time will we spend on the coach on the Skye tour? +

This is a 12 hour tour which covers all of the most popular sights, both en-route to and on the Isle of Skye. Although there is approximately 7 1/2 hours of driving involved the scenery along the way is stunning, and of course the commentary will keep you informed and entertained, so the time onboard will fly by! The tour also incorporates around 4 1/2 hours of stops so there is plenty of time to get out and explore!

How much walking is involved? +

The stop where we spend most time on this tour is at the Fairy Pools.  The walk from the coach park to the pools is uphill on a rough path.  To get to the first pool will take a fit person around 15 – 20 minutes and the distance is 0.7 miles.  To then walk on to the last of the pools is a further 0.3 miles and will take around 10 minutes (this is entirely optional as you can enjoy the beauty of the pools from the first vantage point).  In total a fit person will walk the 1.5 miles there and back in around 40 minutes, and will have around 35-50 minutes to enjoy at the pools themselves.

You can choose to go for a walk in Portree but there is no requirement to do any walk other than at the Fairy Pools (even at the pools your guide can take you to an alternative natural sight nearby, but please note that there are no other activities, shops or things to see at the Fairy Pools).

What if the weather is bad? +

In the summer of 2023 bridges were built at the Fairy Pools, in order to enable access to the pools, whatever the weather.  (Previously, stepping stones had to be used to cross the streams and, if the stones were submerged, it was not possible to cross). The being said, if it is very rainy and windy the Fairy Pools is really not a pleasant experience, as you cannot see the views, the water will not be the brilliant blue the pools are famous for and, most importantly, there is no shelter, so you are likely to get completely soaked.  This makes for a really unpleasant experience, if you have to spend the next six hours feeling damp!  Consequently, if the weather is bad we may decide that it would be advantageous to visit another sight instead.  We really only do this if we have to, as we know many people book this tour primarily to visit this top sight.

On this tour in general we will do our best to tailor our itinerary to the weather conditions.  Whilst it is not always possible to avoid the rain, we can adjust our timings to try and ensure that we visit the most exposed sights at the least rainy times.

Can I swim in the pools? +

First and foremost; we would not encourage you to swim in the pools.  However, if you are considering it please bear the following in mind;

We cannot stress enough how cold the water is – it might look enticing but, even in the height of summer, it is estimated to be around 4-6oC (42oF) which is colder than the (notoriously chilly) North Sea!!

Open water swimming is inherently dangerous and should only be attempted by very confident swimmers

There is nowhere to change, which is fine if you put your swimming stuff on under your clothes, but perhaps not as fine when you come out desperate to get some warm clothes on,  but everyone is looking and pointing at the crazy person who has just been swimming!

If you do decide that you still wish to swim in the pools, you should bring a towel and swimming costume.

Swimming in the pools is done entirely at your own risk.

Can we visit Talisker? +

In a word, no. We do not visit Talisker Distillery on any of our scheduled or private tours, as it often gets exceptionally busy there and, as such, we are unable to guarantee the quality of the experience offered.

Can we book a private tour instead? +

Yes – we’d be delighted to offer you a private tour! These are suited to groups of 8+, as the smallest vehicle we have is a luxury 16-seater mini-coach. Please contact us for details of availability and pricing.

Can wheelchair/walking frame users come on the Skye tour? +

Unfortunately not all of the stops offer wheelchair access, as a lot of the terrain on Skye is very rugged. Also, the coach is not equipped for passengers to remain in their wheelchairs.  That being said, if you are able to get out of your wheelchair at the coach steps and walk onto the coach, there is no reason why you could not enjoy the tour from the comfort of the coach and we will make every effort to accommodate those with mobility problems.

Can children come on this tour? +

We welcome children over the age of six on our tour.

It should be noted that approximately 60-70% of the day is spent on the coach, so it may be an idea to bring some toys, games and snacks with you.  Unfortunately, due to the duration of the tour and time on the coach, we do not feel that this tour is appropriate for children under the age of six, so the tour is not open to this age group. This is for the comfort of other passengers and also to ensure that the driver guide can focus on doing their jobs without any distractions.  UK law states that each passenger must have their own seat and use their seatbelt at all times. Consequently, it is not possible to take a child on your lap. From experience we know that, very occasionally, parents try to bring children on without purchasing a seat. However, we would like to make it clear that this is not allowed and there will be no refund if you are refused entry to the tour for taking children under 6 or those whom you haven’t booked.

Can I be dropped off in Skye after the tour? +

Yes!  If you would like to spend a few days in Skye we are happy to drop you off there, so that you can continue your trip independently.  In order to see as much as possible of Skye on the tour we’d recommend dropping you off in Sligachan, Broadford or Kyleakin at the end of the day.  However, if you would like to be dropped off somewhere else please contact us and we’ll do our best to accommodate your request (although please note that we cannot drop you off in Portree, as we do not return there at the end of the day).

If you are dropped off in Skye you will most likely miss the photo stops at Eilean Donan Castle and Urquhart Castle/Loch Ness.

Our aim is to provide the ultimate cultural holiday experience. Tour and adventure with us as we explore the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. It is our pledge to enable you to appreciate not just the history, but the richness of heritage and legacy in music and song of this ancient, stunning and special place.

Many visitors to the UK speak mistakenly about Britain and England being one and the same place. Scotland they imagine as perhaps being a region of the UK.

Not only is Scotland a nation in its own right but the Highlands and Islands of Scotland  (“A’ Ghàidhealtachd”)  is within Scotland virtually a separate entity and has had all the requirements of nationhood in its turbulent existence.

Join Us on One of Our 5-star Scotland Tours

We were very concern about this trip as we were traveling with a 2 years old child. But the tour was amazing. The car was comfortable, it was provided a seat car for our daughter, Andrew drives safe and he was so kind and nice with us, told us lot of good history and the places visited! It was excellent. Thank you Andrew!

Our 4-Day guided tour beginning in Edinburgh and ending in Glasgow with Andrew of Hame Tours was an exceptional and enjoyable experience for my friends and I. His vast knowledge of the numerous areas we visited and Scotland was extremely helpful. It was certainly a fun trip for us and anyone considering a guide and driver should not overlook considering Andrew. Thank you Andrew for a memorable experience!

Andrew was amazing !He took us to so many places !My husband who is not as into outlander as me loved it just as much because the history is just so rich you just get immersed !Thankyou Andrew for a lovely day!!

This was a fantastic way to see a bunch of sights in the Inverness area of the Highlands. Loved the door to door service and Andrew was a very knowledgeable and friendly guide. For those of us who are fans of the Outlander series it was awesome to see some of the actual places from the stories.

Culloden battlefield.

Visit the windswept moor where the Jacobites made their final stand. This National Trust Site is beautifully done with a Inverness museum that walks you through the Jacobite uprising of 1745 and the events that lead up to the battle on Culloden Moor, a pivotal event in Scottish and British history.

Be sure to watch the 360 reenactment video of the Battle of Culloden and find the clan stones out on the moor. I recommend booking your ticket to Culloden in advance.

Clava Cairns

Originally built to house the dead, the Clava Cairns are about 4,000 years old. The cemetery remained a sacred place for millennia. You can visit the stone circles and mounds for free. They are only about a 5 minute drive from Culloden Battlefield.

Just a few miles from Inverness, Loch Ness is the second largest loch in Scotland and famous for its supposed occupant, the Loch Ness Monster, or “Nessie.” Make sure you visit Loch Ness and see if you can catch a glimpse for yourself!

Be sure to take a cruise so that you can take in all the beautiful views and hopefully find Nessie!

Urquhart Castle

For fantastic views of Loch Ness and an awesome history lesson, head to Urquhart Castle. Wander around the ancient ruins of this ancient castle that has been there since the 13th century.

Explore Inverness City

Many people will stay in Inverness and use it as a home base to see the highlands, Edinburgh and the Isle of Skye , but don’t skip exploring this beautiful city with it’s old stone buildings and a castle to boot! Be sure to see Inverness Castle, the Old High Church, Victorian Market, and St. Andrews Cathedral.

I recommend taking a walking tour of the old city centre to help you learn the Scottish history of this incredible city.

Have Dinner on a Family Farm

I highly recommend having dinner with my friends Kacey and James. Enjoy a lovely evening with this Scottish Crofting family where you an enjoy real homemade Scottish food and hospitality, see the animals on the Croft (small farm), and enjoy learning about Scottish folklore during a whiskey tasting.

This is a great family friendly option and feels like visiting old friends. Book ASAP as they fill up fast. It’s quite pricey, but for the great food and unforgettable experience, I think it’s a worthy splurge. Whatever you do in Inverness, it’s sure to have you leaving Scotland with a feeling of connection to its ancient past and unforgettable memories.

If you’re seeing more of Scotland, be sure to visit Edinburgh and the Isle of Skye . And while you’re there, take a cheap flight over to Ireland!

DISCOVER INVERNESS THROUGH A LOCAL'S EYES ★★★★★

My husband and I were fortunate to be introduced to Inverness on our first full day by Christine. Her knowledge of Inverness and Scotland’s history is deep and broad, and she brought it to life as we walked to the various sites in this charming small city.

Our guide, Simon, was very knowledgeable about Inverness, quite engaging! At first we thought we could walk around and see the sights on our own, but don’t do that! You will be missing a great deal. He has historical info on many buildings, Inverness in general, that you will miss on your own. Also, he asked what we may be interested in learning about, appreciated that. He had fun facts along the way, and answered all questions that we asked! This is a great walking tour, well worth the low price! Thanks Simon!

Very informative and a great way to get introduced to Inverness. There was plenty of historical knowledge we were given and it helped to understand more about Scotland in general.

The 1.5 hour city tour with my wife any myself covers the important parts of the city of Inverness and explains the history of the city and provides a historical perspective of the various important buildings and structures in the city which we would otherwise not have got by just walking around. The flavor of local history and information is priceless and could not be obtained even if one did this by themselves for hours. In 1.5 hours it helps cover the entire city and you are free to spend the rest of the day as per your choice. A really must have experience.

We joined the Dark tour and had a great time. Learned a few historic facts, some ghosts stories and seen a good part of old Inverness. Even the weather cooperated!

This walking tour is a good way to get acquainted with Inverness and some of the local Highland culture and history. Not a strenuous walk, but it does cover quite a bit of area throughout the city centre. Simon was an engaging and knowledgeable tour guide - very attentive to the group.

A perfect introduction to Inverness, even through the rain! Well researched and presented, touching many spots of great historical and current interest. Well done!

We went on this tour as a shore excursion while on a cruise. It was an excellent tour, and Sarah was an excellent tour guide. This is about a 1 1/2 hour tour that makes a loop around the old city of Inverness. This was easy walking, but we covered a lot of ground in a relatively short time so it would be hard with a walker. Sarah had much information about Inverness, particularly in regards to Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Highland Rebellion. Fortunately we had a beautiful day and an enjoyable tour. I would definitely recommend.

St Mary's Catholic Church - Inverness, Scotland, UK - English Heritage - Cadw - Historic Scotland on Waymarking.com

"Le bâtiment se distingue par la grande qualité de son autel et de ses vitraux. Il y a une messe quotidienne dans l'église et c'est aussi le siège de l'aumônerie polonaise d'Inverness. Description L'église St Mary se trouve sur Huntly Street.
