Welcome to our Icy Bay sea kayaking trip in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, Alaska.

I’m always exited to return to this area and explore this geographic phenomenon again. You will be too.

Icy Bay is one of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park’s least visited areas, and also one of Alaska’s best kept secrets. Few visitors venture here.

The place offers simply superb, second-to-none, sea kayaking. Paddle up close to the giant, calving glaciers and countless icebergs. Photograph the various species of marine mammals and myriad different sea birds. The world’s tallest coastal mountain and mountain range tower above you.

Enjoy all this with the very strong probability that you won’t encounter another human being the whole time. You’ll likely see grizzly bear tracks in the sand along the beach long before you see any human footprints!

Icy Bay Sea Kayaking Trip Video

You’ll love five nights camping in Icy Bay, one night at a lodge in Yakutat. 5 days of paddling, hiking and photographing.

Camp by the beach and enjoy a nightly fire and great food. The view from dinner doesn’t get any better.

Paddling adventures will takes us across the bay and up the various fjords and passages of the bay. We’ll try to get up close to the various glaciers and icebergs but must treat them all with respect. Water in the bay can easily reach depths of 300 feet!

This is rated as an easy trip and we offer a flexible itinerary to accommodate you/your group.

Combine a few days sea kayaking with some hiking, beach camping, exploring and relaxing in one of the most impressive landscapes anywhere. Basecamp and enjoy paddling different fjords each day.

Or if you’re looking for something a little more adventurous we can break camp each day and paddle to a new location.

Coastal Alaska

100 years ago, this bay was covered in ice. A multitude of massive gainers crept southward from the St. Elias Mountains and met the shores of the northern Pacific Ocean along the Cape Yakataga shoreline. There was no bay here when Captain Cook sailed by in 1778.

Today, after a century of recent glacial retreat, Icy Bay is a cluster of cool, deep bays. As the glaciers recede further northward toward the lofty sanctity of the St. Elias Range, Icy Bay grows even larger.

Three large fjords constitute the best of our paddling domain, and we’ll explore the nooks and crannies of all of them; the Taan and the Tsaa in particular.

Icy Bay was labelled one of the 10 treasures of the world by National Geographic, and truly lives up to its reputation. Icebergs the size of a small house float by. Mountains soar overhead.

Mt. St. Elias

Any commentary on Icy Bay inevitably includes observations on Mt. St. Elias.

Why? Because it’s a remarkable mountain, and a powerful spectacle. When the clouds clear and the mountain comes out, it commands our attention.

Rising over 18 000 feet directly from the shoreline, the mountain is the tallest coastal peak in the world. Sitting on the US/Canada border, it is the second tallest peak in both countries. Its presence above our camp and our excursions is constant. You’re ever aware of this mountain.

The Saint Elias mountain range is the world’s tallest coastal mountain range, and the scenery here is without equal. Snow-capped peaks surround you. You’ll also get great views of 4 glaciers, the Guyot, Yahtse and Tyndall Glaciers being the most prominent.

Who's This Trip For?

This trip is a great option for those looking for an easy vacation in a remote and beautifully wild setting. It’s also customizable enough to fit both novice paddlers and experienced kayakers and outdoors people.

Looking for a quiet getaway? This trip is for you. Solitude and a peaceful serene wilderness locale make the Icy Bay Sea Kayaking Trip the perfect summer destination. The relatively calm, glassy water of the fjords make it a nice place to paddle for those with little or no experience.

You might also take short easy dayhikes along the beach or through the woods. Explore the edges of the glaciers at the far reaches of the fjords. There are numerous small creeks and waterfalls to enjoy and photo opps around every bend.

For those folks looking for a more rigorous outing we’ll break camp each day and kayak the entire length and breadth of the bay. There are campsites along the beach near the glaciers. If you’d like we can make this an expedition adventure of the entire Icy Bay.

The Lost Coast

Where are we.

Depending on the exact trip itinerary and extension options you’d prefer, we depart from Yakutat to Icy Bay, or possibly from McCarthy. We’ll fly in to Icy Bay, land on a spectacular beach, and set up camp.

Weather issues

The Taan Fjord still shows on many maps as ice covered! The calm, protected pristine waters of these fjords make classic Alaska sea kayaking. Even in inclement weather we’re typically able to get out and paddle. We can venture up the various fjords towards the glaciers, hike the shore lands and poke around the glaciers as we explore this very dynamic area.

Gear Requirements

I’ll provide you with a detailed gear list upon your reservation. download the Free eBook Info Packet for a brief overview if you like.

All your camp gear can be provided, included tents, sleeping pads, stoves, kitchenware, etc. You’ll need your own sleeping bag (rent one if you need to).

All your paddling gear is provided, from the kayak and PFD to your paddling gloves and booties (see the “What’s Included?” section below).

You’ll want to bring warm layers for camp, a fleece or down jacket, beanie, long johns, etc. A pair of sandals are great, as are light hikers, long pants and long-sleeved shirt (better sun and bug protection), and shorts and t-shirt (cross your fingers for some warm weather). Trip Options & Extensions

There are various possibilities to extend the trip. We can head to the nearby Samovar hills for a multi-day hike, or the Lost Coast for a backpack/packraft trip , or cross over the mighty St. Elias Mountains and combine this trip with one of the backpacking/basecamp trips in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park , such as Iceberg Lake – Bremner Mines . For a challenging adventure, we can grab our backpacks and traverse across the mighty Malaspina Glacier in an honestly epic adventure. Not for the meek!!! We can, if you’re interested, also extend the Icy Bay sea kayaking portion of the trip to more thoroughly explore every nook and cranny of this amazing place!

Another option is to packraft Icy Bay, instead of sea kayaking. Packrafts are smaller, and soft-sided inflatable boats, so they’ll be slower at getting around the bay and the fjords, but they’re a lot of fun, a little more stable in the flat water, more portable if we want to do some adventurous hiking and float a river back to the bay, and a little cheaper as well! Inquire for details.

One possible extension is to include a short basecamp/dayhike or backpacking trip in the nearby Samovar Hills – see the  Custom and exploratory trips  page for details. The Samovar Hills are a relatively little visited region of the park that offer more stunning views of the St. Elias mountain range.

Day trip extensions might include a day up to the Hubbard Glacier, near Yakutat, or an amazing flight seeing and photography trip in the amazing St. Elias Mountains.

We’ll also possibly charter a boat ride out of Yakutat, up Disenchantment Bay to see the Hubbard Glacier and Russell Fjord. The Hubbard Glacier is known as  ‘the world’s most calvingest glacier’ , and there’s a great possibility of getting to witness the spectacle of enormous chunks of ice crashing down from the glacier into the ocean – an amazing sight. We’ll plan this trip for mid-June, but it’s really a good option anytime in June and July. This is becoming a very popular trip; camping on the beach, paddling, hiking, swimming, photography, and some of the most spectacular landscapes in Alaska; classic coastal terrain.

Trip Itinerary

Caveat – don’t expect your trip to run exactly as I outline it here. This section is here to give you an outline of a typical itinerary, and is only intended as a sample.

Exact logistics will vary by year and by trip.

That said …. read on

Day 0 – You need to arrive in Yakutat the night before our trip begins.

Day 1 – We’ll meetup the morning of your trip departure date for a brief orientation and gear review. next, meet your pilot for a spectacular charter flight to Icy Bay. We’ll fly to Icy Bay, land on the beach, have a bite to eat, and then establish our campsite.

We’ll make camp nearby, set up the tents, cook tent, etc, and then get ready for an afternoon “introductory paddle” ; we’ll start with a comprehensive safety review. We’ll also have a demonstration and lesson in basic sea kayaking, everything from getting in and out of your boat, to an overview of paddling techniques, etc.

We spend some time in a nearby cove, the perfect place to work on some basic sea kayaking boat safety protocols. Here you’ll get comfortable with the boats and the water. Once you’re good to go, we’ll head for deeper waters.

Day 2/5 – We’ll spend each day paddling and hiking as you desire. One day we might paddle to the very back of Taan Fjord, and check out the face of Tindall Glacier. Another we might paddle across to the Karr Hills and enjoy a walk on the beach, or explore Yahtse Glacier. Most days we’ll bring lunch, and spend the day around the bay.

Another nice walk is the beachline to Cetani River. That can be an entire, or as brief as an hour or two. That’s entirely up you.

Day 6 – On our final day, we’ll break camp and our charter flight will pick us up and fly you to Yakutat (included). You can either overnight in Yakutat (recommended), or fly on to your next destination.

No Cruise Liners Here?

A shallow sand strip near the mouth of the bay keeps the area free of these monstrosities. We’re able to enjoy this incredible place in relative solitude.

Why do so few people visit Icy Bay?

One reason Icy Bay is such a great sea kayaking location is the distinct and very noticeable absense of cruise ships.

None of the major cruise liners venture into the Bay, which makes the area very different from many of Alaska’s other more popular sea kayaking destinations. A shallow sand strip near the mouth of the bay has so far continued to keep the area free of these monstrosities, and we’re able to enjoy this incredible place in relative solitude. In 2013 the only other vessel we saw in the entire week was a small private sailboat that drifted nearby for a few hours.

What wildlife will we most likely see?

Icy Bay is a great bird watching area, and we’ll see an array of ducks, sea birds, shore birds and raptors. Bald eagles are common, as are falcon as well. Both marbled and the endangered Kittlitz’s murrelets are found in Icy Bay.

Harbor Seals come into the bay as well, hunting salmon, which are always a treat to see. With an estimated population in the bay of over 3500 seals, you’ll more than likely see quite a few!

This is one of the few areas where they’re rarely bothered by orcas, so they’re often very visible in the calm waters, as well as loafing around, soaking up the sun resting on the icebergs. June/early July is birthing time, so it’s possible you’ll see some cute seal pups as well.

If we’re lucky, we’ll also see mountain goats as well. Grizzly bears are abundant in the area, and it’s likely that we’ll see them as well.

How much sea kayaking experience do I need to take this trip?

Perfect trip for the beginner. Perfect for the intermediate paddler and darn near perfect for experienced paddlers as well.

How far are we paddling each day?

The beauty of a basecamp sea kayak trip is the flexibility. We’ve done days with good, solid experienced paddlers where we covered almost thirty miles in a day. Other days, with other paddlers, 5 or 6 miles.

What’s the maximum group size we can take?

I like to keep the group to five, maximum. Contact me to talk about bringing a larger group if you need to.

How do we get to Yakutat?

Flights on major airlines come through Anchorage or Juneau.

Can we paddle tandem kayaks?

At present (2024) we are only offering single kayaks, sorry. If you need a tandem, contact us and we’ll see what we can configure.

How about bugs?

Intermediate

On a scale of 1 – 5, five being the most challenging, three hiking boots is smack in the middle.

1 boot = basecamp/dayhike easy 2 boots = easier backpacking trip 3 boots = intermediate level trip 4 boots = intermediate to advanced backpacking 5 boots = ask yourself are you really ready for this?

Expect whatever level you think might best fit you to be one level LOWER on our scale. Hiking here in Alaska is generally a step or three above what you’ll find in the Lower 48 states.

If you consider yourself up for an intermediate level hike, for example, assume that a trip rated intermediate here will probably be a bit tougher than you’re expecting; not impossible, but harder than you think. Intermediate level trips don’t mean you won’t be challenged, won’t struggle at times, and won’t have any easy sections either. On any trip you’ll probably find some easy sections, some harder, and some are challenging.

Also, understand that all these rating are so completely subjective that they’re not entirely all together practical. They’re a VERY loose idea of how the trips might compare to one another, for some people.

Lastly, understand that even a trip we might rate as “intermediate” (3-4 hiking boots) may still have some difficulty at times. Weather changes things. There may be a tough steep climb on the route that takes a few hours.

Malaspina Glacier Backpacking Trip

A Backpacking Trip Like Nothing You’ve Ever Done Before. Or Will Again. I Promise.

On a scale of 1 – 5, five being the most challenging, five hiking boots is right up there.

Expect it to be tougher than you think it will. At least in part, anyway. Some sections will inevitably be easier. Some will make you feel it.

One of the best hikers I’ve walked with, Ben, said it perfectly one day, as we traversed a step sidehill on the Southern Traverse. “Man, Alaska just beats you up, doesn’t it?”

And he’s right. It does. Don’t be fooled by the low mileages and the lower elevations. The catch is the difficulty of traversing rugged country with no trails. However much you think that might impact you, double it.

You need to be athletic, well balanced, in good shape, and an experienced backpacker for this kind of trip. If you’re not that .. well, don’t say you weren’t well warned.

A trek like no other. A glacier like no other. We backpack across the largest glacier in North America. Beneath the highest coastal mountains in the world.

The Edge of Nowhere. The End of Everywhere.

On a scale of 1 – 5, five being the most challenging, two hiking boots is at the easier end of the spectrum.

Realize that backpacking is never “easy”. You’re carrying from 35-50+ pounds on your back day after day. You’ll be hiking for a number of hours each day (varies trip to trip, day to day), and that’s not “easy” for most people.

That said, our “2 hiking boots”  level should meet the need for most novice backpackers, and are generally what I recommend for families with younger kids, etc as well. Terrain challenges aren’t usually a problem, and the walking is somewhat more orthodox. You won’t be traversing 1 mile of steep sidehill covered in slippery rocks, or snaking through dense thickets of alder and willow.

Backpacking on the shores of the Pacific Ocean we explore both the ancient spruce forests and edges of Malaspina Glacier. Bears, packrafts and nobody else.

They come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and styles, but the best sea kayaks will let you set off on many an aquatic adventure, touring and exploring along coastlines, paddling solo or with friends, for a few hours or over several days.

Finding the ideal boat for you takes lots of research, but we’re here to help steer you towards the best sea kayak to suit your paddling preferences. There are many considerations to weigh up – do you want a sit-on-top or a sit-inside kayak? What sort of length should you go for? Do you require a rudder or skeg, and what about storage – how much is enough? Is plastic or fiberglass best for you?

A lot depends on your level of experience in a kayak, and the rest will be determined by what you plan to do with the boat once you’ve purchased it. If you’re fairly new to kayaking and just want a stable craft for messing around in fairly calm water during the warmer months, then a broad, relatively short, plastic hulled sit-on-top will be perfect. If, however, you’re intending to do some serious all-season sea kayaking and touring, then a more technically capable sit-inside boat with dry storage areas will be better for you. While sit-on-top kayaks can be a lot more forgiving for less experienced paddlers, especially when out on the waves, you can still find open-cockpit craft that offer decent levels of performance. The Perception Triumph 13 is one such boat. It boasts a relatively long and narrow hull, which has a flat bottom for enhanced primary stability but a pronounced chine, so it glides across the water a good bit faster than less streamlined sit-on-tops. A highly versatile kayak that can be paddled in a range of environments, from rivers, lakes and estuaries to bays and coastlines, the upswept flared bow offers reasonable manoeuvrability.

The plastic construction is highly robust, so you don’t need to be overly cautious around rocks (so long as you don’t mind a few scrapes and scratches). While they can’t offer the same level of protection and performance as a sit-inside, not all sit-on-top sea kayaks are simply big lumps of floating plastic. The Tarpon E120 has plenty to offer the recreational paddler looking to explore their local coastline and enjoy some wave action. For a sea kayak, the Carolina is a bit of a shorty, but if you’re not doing much long-distance touring and open-ocean paddling in big swell, then extended length really isn’t crucially important. In fact, a short, nifty boat is a very good option for lots of people, being easier to store and transport, and more maneuverable in many situations. The 12ft length of the Carolina means this extremely popular model is ideal for paddling in bays, inlets and along most coasts, and it’s also very capable on lakes, estuaries and slower flowing rivers.

Made from high-density polyethylene, it’s very tough and will easily survive a bit of rough and tumble on pebbly beaches and rocky coastlines. With built-in buoyancy, excellent primary stability, and a large cockpit, it’s easy to enter and exit the kayak in both wet and dry scenarios, so this is a very good boat for beginners and more occasional paddlers. It has a relatively flat hull, combined with a V-shaped bow and stern, which means its both stable, but also tracks well. It has bungee deck rigging fore and aft, for stashing stuff you want to access easily. And, despite its relatively short length, the Carolina still boasts two storage hatches for carrying larger kit for longer days on the water, or even overnight camping adventures. A relatively recent entry onto the saltwater scene, the new Hydra from Wave Sport is a good-looking touring sea kayak, available at a comparatively affordable price. Wave Sport began designing dynamic whitewater boats in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, but after being brought into the Confluence group, production moved to the South Coast of England and diversified. The Hydra has various features that hark back to the wild whitewater history of the brand, however. The complex hull shape has a slight rocker profile, which makes it more maneuverable than many touring boats, the padded thigh braces are excellent, and it boasts innovative flip-over carry hip pads (which makes portaging the boat much more comfortable).

If you’re more into playing on the waves and rock hopping around short bits of coast than going on long expeditions, then this hardy plastic boat is a good option. But you can absolutely take this kayak touring too – it has good, adjustable pedal footrests, a skeg that can be lowered or raised (a rudder is an optional extra) and the boat glides nicely and tracks well across open water. It’s good for exploring estuaries, bays, calm rivers and coastlines. The Hydra has three dry storages areas: large hatches on the bow and stern, and a day hatch on the front, making it genuinely easy to access. In addition to that, you have bungee deck rigging just in front of the cockpit and accessory rails behind. Other features include retractable carry handles, a security bar and reflective deck safety line.

At 479cm, just under 16ft, it’s not the longest sea kayak out there, but it offers the perfect balance for those who enjoy a bit of everything, from touring and exploring to messing around in big waves.

Equipped with a skeg, the Volan 158 tracks straight as a die, and moves fast through the water, but the V-shaped hull and rocker make it highly responsive when you’re carving into turns or playing on the edge. For tourers, the storage capacity is good, with big bow and stern hatches, plus a day hatch just in front of the cockpit and an optional mini hatch to the front of the cockpit. The Romany Classic has a keyhole-style cockpit, which gives the paddler superb control, and fantastic secondary stability for good handling in more technical water. For those with the appropriate skills, it’s easy to roll (with a low rear deck), but if you do end up going for a swim, the keyhole cockpit is easy to exit from and the boat drains well (the sloping bulkhead behind the seat means the kayak can be emptied by simply raising the bow, so you don’t have to perform an x-rescue). Built tough, but fast on the water and excellent in surf, it’s the boat of choice for a lot of kayaking coaches around the world. The Romany Classic has enough storage for lightweight camping trips and economical expeditions, offering three storage hatches, one in the front (with a capacity volume of 57.5 litres), one at the rear (41.6 litres) and a 37.5-litre day hatch for stashing essentials that you want to be able to access easily. What to look for when buying the best sea kayak

There are multiple considerations to take into account when purchasing any kayak, but it’s particularly important to get the right craft if you intend heading out to sea in it. The best sea kayak for you will depend on what kind of paddler you are, and the kind of conditions you most regularly venture out in. Before making a purchase, consider the following points.

Should I get a sit-on–top or a sit-inside sea kayak?

This, of course, comes down to personal preference, but you need to be aware of some pros and cons. Sit-on-top kayaks tend to offer excellent primary stability, so you won’t fall out of the boat very often, if at all, and if you do, it’s easy to remount the craft, without having to perform a complicated self rescue, get your lower body into a cockpit, or bailing any water out of the boat. These factors make them ideal for families, fishers and fairly new paddlers. All this stability comes at a big cost, however, in terms of paddling performance. Most sit-on-tops (ocean and surf skis aside) are much slower and less maneuverable than sit-inside kayaks, which are a far better option for people who want to do any real touring. Also, there’s no protection against the elements on a sit-on-top, so they tend to be used mostly in the summer. If your wear a spraydeck (spray skirt), sit-inside kayaks can be paddled all year round, in all kinds of conditions.

Should I choose a plastic or a fiberglass kayak?

Plastic is cheap and very tough. Plastic-hulled kayaks will survive all sorts of rough treatment along craggy coastlines and rocky beaches, with just a few scratches as a reminder of the adventures you’ve been on, but they are much heavier and less responsive than fibreglass (or Kevlar / Carbon) boats, which are built for top-end performance, and usually cost twice or even three times as much. You need to be far more careful with fibreglass / kevlar / carbon kayaks, because they can be irreparably damaged by rocks and rough treatment. As a gauge, it’s worth starting out with a cheaper, hardier plastic boat and moving up to a more expensive construction once you know what you’re doing.

Do I need a rudder or a keel?

You don’t necessarily need either, but it’s good to understand what they do. A skeg is a rigid fin that protrudes from the bottom of the kayak (often it can be lowered and drawn back up by the paddler, while on the water), which helps with tracking – meaning the kayak will behave itself and go in a straight line while you paddle and the stern won’t drift around (although conditions play a part in this, and in strong winds you might need to do some weather cocking). A rudder is a dynamic steering device mounted on the end of the stern, which is operated by the paddler, using their feet. Some experienced kayakers prefer to do all their maneuvering with paddle strokes and by using their body position to get an ‘edge’ and perform turns.

How much storage do I need?

This comes down entirely to the sort of paddling you do. Deck bungees are great for water bottles and extra layers, while proper hatches are excellent as ‘dry storage’ for larger gear that you don’t need access to while you’re on the water – so if you’re planning a day-long adventures with a lunch break, you might have warm clothes, picnic supplies and a stove stashed here (although hatches should keep water out, it’s best to store things in a dry bag if you really want to ensure they don’t get wet). For longer tours, you will need larger-volume hatches to accommodate camping kit. Smaller day hatches are often found on the best sea kayaks, close to the cockpit, for keeping things (phone/camera) dry and easily accessible. If you’re a yak angler, then you might want an open recess area with some bungees to store fishing kit (and, hopefully, your catch).

Our Clients Love Kayaking in Portland, Maine with Us!

We had such an outstanding experience! We went for my SIL birthday and to be honest I was super nervous. Our guide was amazing and made us feel so comfortable. We were given dry suites to wear over our clothes and he walked us through everything we needed to know before launching into the bay. He was calm and had such great energy. We paddled all the way to Cushing Island, stopped on a beach to eat our packed lunches and then paddled back. I felt safe the whole time and we had a blast. It was a beautiful day and I will be going again for sure!

My sister, father and I did a 2-night, 3-day kayaking adventure with Portland Paddle. It was an all around incredible experience!! From my initial conversations with the owner, Zach, to booking (and asking a million questions) with Eric to the most skilled, down to earth and thoughtful guide - Garrison - we were treated with kindness, patience, and professionalism by the whole team and had a trip of a lifetime!! Can’t thank you all enough (especially Garrison!!) for making my Dad’s 75th bday one to remember :) We highly recommended Portland Paddle!

I took a half day tour around Casco Bay, led by Janet Robinson. The trip was wonderful. Janet is very knowledgeable and a skilled kayaker. She took us out just beyond one of the peninsulas so we could see the expanse of the ocean and hit 3 foot rollers. They were awesome, and a new experience for me. We stopped at Fort Gorgeous for lunch and then paddles back to our launch site. I have been on several trips and kayak workshops with Portland Paddle. In my opinion they are one of the best commercial kayak outfits in the Portland, Maine area.

We had an amazing time on the Fort tour. Perfect for myself who hasn’t kayaked in years and my 13 year old son. Kyle was our tour guide and he was awesome!! Kyle made the adventure even more fun. He was helpful and knowledgeable. The tour of the fort was really cool. My son loved exploring the fort. Perfect for a teen. Portland Paddle has so many different tours to choose from. It was very easy to book. I would recommend Portland Paddle to anyone looking for a great time!!

I did the Fort Gorges Kayak Tour and was not disappointed! They were able to accommodate me as a solo kayaker without any issue. Our guide, Alonso, was a really great guide. He was super friendly and positive and approachable and gave us lots of interesting tid bits of information about the local wildlife, and or course about Fort Gorges. The gear was good, the service was even better. They were able to also help change my trip last minute. Would highly recommend!

Alonzo was an excellent tour guide. He prepared us prior to departure by running through the equipment and safety procedures, then guided us to Fort Gorges... Alonzo was super safety conscious, which was comforting, and since I’m older he took special care to help me so I didn’t fall when walking around the fort.

Highly recommend. We went on the Fort Gorges tour yesterday morning and had a great experience. Our guide, Henry, gave us a kayaking tutorial (how to hold the paddle, how to steer etc.) prior to us pushing off from East End Beach. He was helpful and knowledgeable about the history of the Fort and gave us plenty of time to explore before we headed back in. I'm looking forward to taking some of the other tours and classes offered here in the near future.

We did the sunset kayak tour in a double kayak. The instructor was fantastic. I can't believe I'm forgetting her name but she paddled the whole coast in 2020 with her friend. It was very well organized, safe, and fun. She explained what different locations were around us out there in the water and some history. Also just talked to each of us in general. It was very nice. Highly recommend it.

The truth is that though you can use a regular kayak for sea trips, it’s better to use one specially designed to handle the ocean surf, sprays, wind, and currents.

Sea kayaking is significantly more dangerous than lake or river kayaking —more so even than whitewater kayaking (though the dangers are different).

You’ve got rip currents , strong winds, changing tidal patterns , waves, even ocean wildlife to consider.

With the wrong kayak, you run a very real risk of capsizing. And if you capsize, you’re very far from land, with little hope of rescue beyond self-rescue .

Sea kayaks are designed with all of this in mind. They’re built to be used specifically on the open ocean, factoring in all the various potential dangers and hazards you’ll face.

Using the right sea kayak can, quite literally, save your life!

Sea vs. River vs. Lake Kayaks

The design of a sea kayak is different from a river or lake kayak in a number of ways:

Sea kayaks tend to be very long and very narrow. This enables better tracking and faster speeds, but makes turning extra difficult. They’re also longer to provide more storage space for all the supplies that will prove essential on long-haul ocean trips.

Sea kayaks will usually feel a bit less stable, but they’re designed that way in order to counteract the rough water. Thanks to their “tippiness”, you’ll be less likely to capsize in rough waves because the kayak kind of rolls with the swells and troughs.

Sea kayaks typically feature either a round hull (which reduces resistance and increases speed) or a V-shaped hull (which cuts through water more effectively and tracks straighter).

V-shaped hulls will either have hard or soft chines (a stiff “backbone” at the tip of the hull’s V-shape). Hard chines increase primary stability, while soft chines give you better edging capacity when dealing with choppy waters.

Cockpit Design

Sea kayaks will typically feature a sit-inside cockpit , providing additional stability and protection against the elements.

However, some kayaks will be designed in the sit-on-top style to allow the water to flow over and off of you while you paddle.

Typically, these are used for paddling closer to shore, while sit-in kayaks are better suited to open-water paddling.

Sea kayaks will usually feature a seat that is affixed to the cockpit itself, with a seat bottom separate from the seat back. The seat backs are also lower, providing support only for your lower back.

Sea Kayak Buying Guide: Critical Factors to Consider

Let’s start off with the basics: the material your kayak is made from.

Typically, sea kayaks are made with one of the following materials:

Polyethylene

This is the cheapest and most commonly used material, due to its high flexibility, decent abrasion-resistance, and, of course, the low cost of manufacture.

Rotomolded polyethylene kayaks are tough and require very little maintenance. Be warned, though, that polyethylene can be damaged by prolonged exposure to UV light. When storing it on your kayak storage rack outdoors, make sure to cover it with a tarp or use a kayak cover to protect it from degradation.

Polycarbonate

Polycarbonate is a step up from polyethylene, though it’s still considered a “cheaper” alternative to premium fiberglass. It looks virtually identical to polyethylene, and though it’s lightweight and can handle greater speeds, it’s not quite as tough or impact-resistant as polyethylene.

ABS is a thermoplastic polymer with greater longevity than polyethylene, meaning it will last longer even when exposed to UV light. It’s lightweight, too, and well worth the higher price tag. Some high-end kayaks are thermoformed from thin sheets of ABS plastic, which makes them super lightweight yet very strong.

Fiberglass/Carbon Fiber

Fiberglass and carbon fiber are the materials used for most high-end kayaks. They are far more durable than polyethylene and polycarbonate, are more resistant to UV damage, and are both flexible and speedy. Expect to pay top dollar for a top-rated product!

It’s not common, but you will find a few sea kayaks made using Kevlar (yes, the same stuff used in body armor). It has an incredible stiffness but offers excellent tensile strength. On the other hand, it’s not only pricey (more expensive than carbon fiber or fiberglass), but also harder to repair any damage sustained.

1)     Longer kayaks are usually faster and better for covering longer distances, while shorter kayaks are more maneuverable in the water and turn more easily.

2)     Wider kayaks are more stable , while narrower kayaks are faster.

3)     Kayak “volume” refers to the amount of space inside the cockpit. Low volume kayaks are ideal for smaller paddlers (under 5’6” and 140 pounds), medium volume kayaks are ideal for the “average” paddler (under 5”10 and 190 pounds), and high volume kayaks are best-suited for taller and heavier paddlers (anyone over 6” and 190 pounds).

Sea kayaks are typically in the 12 to 20-foot range. They’re extra-long to cut through waves, provide faster speeds, and give you greater storage capacity.

Typically, “average” sized users will fit best in a sea kayak between 14 and 17 feet. The heavier and taller you are, the longer your sea kayak should be.

Primary and Secondary Stability

If you’re going to spend a lot of time out on rough, choppy, and tide-swept waters, you’re going to want a kayak that offers both primary and secondary stability.

What do these terms mean?

Primary stability refers to the kayak’s stability when it’s in the upright position.

Secondary stability refers to the kayak’s stability when tipping on its side.

Stability is determined largely by both the hull shape and the type of chines the hull is designed with. We talked a bit about both above, but I wanted to examine it a bit more deeply to make sure it’s clear how these factors affect your paddling.

Round-bottom hulls typically look like the underside of a torpedo. It offers less resistance when cutting through the water, so you can reach higher speeds.

This particular hull shape decreases primary stability (so it will feel more “tippy”) but increases secondary stability. This is the preferred hull shape for high-performance sea kayaks intended to be used closer to the shore (look up kayak surfing —it’s an absolutely real and badass thing!). 

V-shaped hulls are more effective at slicing through the water, and they tend to track straighter than round-bottom hulls. They’re typically used for expedition-style sea kayaks (the sort used for long-distance travel or island-hopping). Like round-bottomed hulls, they offer less primary stability and more secondary stability—making them ideal for rough ocean waters.

V-shaped hulls have either hard or soft chines:

• Hard chines have a gentler angle with very little rounding, and they typically feature a crease that separates the bottom of the boat from its sides. They are better for primary stability and speed.
• Soft chines are more rounded but still have a very prominent meeting of the two edges, though there is no crease separating the bottom and sides of the boat. They contribute to better secondary stability, making them ideal for rough waters, but they’re not as suitable to high-speed paddling as hard chines.

Kayak Weight

How heavy your kayak is will definitely factor into your decision to transport and store it (as mentioned above). But it will also play a role in handling on the open water, and how much effort is required to paddle.

Sea kayaks will typically be made from very lightweight materials (like fiberglass, polycarbonate, or polyethylene), but will still be heavier than your average lake kayak due to its extended size. Make sure that you’ve got a kayak roof rack on your truck or car capable of handling that much weight, as well as a kayak storage rack or hoist in your garage/shed.

Weight Capacity

Sea kayaks usually have a higher weight capacity than lake or river kayaks because they’re designed for multi-hour/multi-day use. It’s expected that you’ll be bringing along a lot of gear, food, water, and other supplies when venturing out onto the open water.

However, you still need to consider weight capacity when kayak-shopping. The boat needs to be able to handle your weight PLUS another 50-100 pounds in order to be useful for long-haul ocean trips.

(Note: Weight capacity is less important if you’re staying near the shore, but you still want to make sure your kayak can handle the weight of emergency supplies on the off-chance you get pulled out to sea by a rip tide.)

Sinkage Level

The term “sinkage level” refers to how much weight it takes to make the kayak sink 1 inch into the water. 

High sinkage levels typically indicate greater stability. 

Low sinkage levels means the craft is more likely to take on water, especially in rough or choppy surf, meaning you’re more prone to capsizing.

Rudder/Skeg

Having a built-in steering system— a rudder and/or a skeg —will help to improve both tracking and handling on the open ocean.

Skegs are simple fins placed near the stern end of the kayak hull, which help to keep you on-track as you slice through the water. 

I highly recommend a ”retractable” skeg rather than a “fixed” skeg. Retractable skegs allow you to adjust how the skeg handles, giving you a way to correct for tides, winds, and currents.

Rudder systems are typically mounted on the stern of the kayak and are operated by foot pedals or a handle.

Some sea kayaks come with both skeg and rudder systems, but many will usually only feature one. Both help to improve handling, but rudder systems are always more expensive than skegs.

Bulkheads/Storage

Sea kayaks typically come with extra-large bulkheads. 

Bulkheads are airtight compartments that offer both additional storage space and buoyancy. 

They are an essential design component of the kayak, helping to keep you afloat even when flooded with water. Bulkheads also provide dry storage for food, spare clothes , and other gear that should not get wet. A word of caution here: bulkhead or not, ALWAYS put your gear in dry bags .

Make sure the kayak you’re buying has at least two hatches that allow you to access the front and rear bulkheads. Some models also have a day hatch within easy reach for small items that you may need on the water.

Bonus points if the kayak also has additional bungee cords built onto the deck for extra storage space. You can secure waterproof gear on top of the kayak, allowing you to carry even more!

As we mentioned above, most expedition and touring sea kayaks will feature a sit-inside cockpit, offering protection against the cold water and high ocean winds. These are ideal if you plan to paddle away from the shore and out into the open sea.

However, if you want to stick close to shore and just enjoy the surf and sunshine, you can opt for a sit-on-top kayak . The scupper holes built into the kayak will allow water to drain right out, so you will stay stable and steady even in heavy surf.

Thigh and foot braces are a valuable addition to any kayak.

When you paddle on rough water, you press your feet against the pedals/braces and use the strength of your legs to stay stable. 

Your thighs also press against the sides of the kayak to control it, especially for advanced moves such as edging . Without padding or braces, long hours of paddling can be quite painful on your thighs.

Perimeter Deck Lines

Perimeter deck lines are lines (ropes) that run along the outer edge of your deck, all the way around your kayak. These are an absolute must to have when sea kayaking, because they’re designed to make it easier to self-rescue in case of capsizing.

Basically, the ropes are designed to fit snugly against the kayak’s body, with just room enough for you to slide your fingers underneath. You can use them to first right the kayak, then haul yourself back into the cockpit.

Spray Skirt Compatibility

Spray skirts are an important addition to your sea kayak gear. They are literally the only thing that will stop the ocean spray and splashing waves from spilling over the sides of your cockpit and filling up your kayak. Plus, they protect your body from the (potentially very cold) ocean water, too.

Most sea kayaks are designed to be compatible with spray skirts, but it’s worth doing a bit of quick research to make sure that you can find a spray skirt to fit the kayak you’re choosing. The last thing you want is to be grounded on shore because the only spray skirt compatible with your sea kayak is out of stock or no longer available.

Level of Experience

Your level of experience is a critical factor to consider!

If you’re new to sea kayaking, it might not be wise to go for a multi-day trip on your own. It’s safer to paddle along the coastline, within sight of the shore. For close-to-land paddling, you’ll want a kayak that can handle surf and navigate choppy waters easily.

However, for more experienced paddlers, expedition-style kayaks are a great way to explore the open ocean far away from the shore.  

Water Conditions

Finally, you need to consider what kind of waters you’re dealing with.

If you’re expecting to paddle chiefly on calm waters (think the Gulf of Mexico or the Mar de Cortes), you won’t have to worry about rough surf. Your focus will be on speed and handling.

On the other hand, if you’re thinking of venturing out into the Pacific or Atlantic Ocean, you could come face to face with some pretty harsh water conditions and high waves. Open-ocean sea kayaks need more stability, and you will definitely need more safety gear!

Must-Have Gear for Sea Kayaking

If you’re going kayaking on the open ocean, you’re going to need to take the right safety gear with you. That includes:

• A spare paddle in case your primary gets lost or damaged. A 2-piece paddle is optimal as you can store it on the foredeck within easy reach. Bending Branches Whisper is a popular inexpensive option.

Sea Kayak Safety Tips

Before you head out onto the ocean, it’s imperative that you understand the potential threats you’ll face on the open seas—not just turbulent waters, but also powerful currents, high winds, even marine wildlife. The dangers are real!

Here are a few safety tips that you should always keep in mind:

• Make sure all your self-rescue items are conveniently placed . If it’s not within reach in case of an emergency, it’s useless.
• Always bring a radio , satellite phone, or some means of calling for help. Being able to contact the Coast Guard in an emergency can literally save your life.
• Always wear your PFD , and consider additional buoyancy aids.
• Dress appropriately for the outing. Consider a drysuit or wetsuit, gloves , water shoes or boots , as well as additional layers of quick-drying, moisture-wicking, clothing on top. Bring a waterproof jacket or windbreaker for a top layer, and make sure you’ve got a hat and sunscreen to shield you from the sun.
• Make sure someone knows where you’re going. Show them your planned route and the estimated timeframe for your paddle. That way, they’ll know when it’s time to call for help, as well as where you might be located.
• Get training before you head out onto open seas. Your local canoe or kayaking club will likely have courses you can take to gain sea kayaking experience.
• Always check the tides and weather report before heading out. Don’t just do it in the days leading up to your trip, but on the day of, too. That way, you’ll know if there are any sudden storms or tidal changes that could make the trip too dangerous.
• Finally, don’t push yourself beyond your level of experience. There is no need to risk your life and those of anyone accompanying you.

Safety is your FIRST priority when sea kayaking! Despite the thrill of the open ocean, it’s far more dangerous than lakes or rivers. Make sure you’re prepared for every worst-case-scenario before you head out onto the water.

Absolutely! Out on open water, you’re not only more at the mercy of the elements (wind, waves, and marine life), but you’re too far from land to easily receive help in emergency situations. Your PFD will literally save your life. I cannot overstate the importance of wearing PFD from the moment you start paddling until you’re back on dry land.

You can use a regular river or lake kayak in the ocean, but you’ll find that kayaks designed for calm waters may have a harder time handling in waves or choppy surf. Lake and river kayaks are built with greater primary stability but less secondary stability, meaning they’re more prone to tipping over if the wind kicks up the waves.

It’s not common to be dragged miles and miles out to sea by a riptide or strong tidal current, but it does happen. If you get caught in a riptide, you can usually paddle out of it (to the side, not back to shore), then ride the ocean’s natural currents back into shore. It’s a good idea to research the beach where you’re going to put into the water to make sure there are no tides or currents that will sweep you out to sea. This small measure of prevention can do wonders to help you avoid serious emergency situations!

Kayaks will usually do well in 2 to 3-foot waves. However, more experienced paddlers can handle waves between 6 and 12 feet. Any taller than that, and your risk of capsizing increases exponentially.

The answer is simple: when the weather is fine and the ocean condition is calm. Sunny weather will warm up the water, making your trip more pleasant. Calm oceans with little wind will be far less turbulent, so you can enjoy the paddle a lot more without having to fight powerful waves and blinding ocean spray.

What's the best time to kayak on San Juan Island?

The most popular months for kayaking San Juan Island are June through September. However, we also have kayak tours during the “Shoulder Season” from April through May and the first half of October. The two busiest months for kayaking are July and August.

I know when I’m looking for the best kayaking near me, I check out this interactive kayak map that can help find new paddling locations quickly and easily.

This map can help save you time and let you discover new kayaking spots to enjoy the great outdoors in your local area.

How To Use This Interactive Kayaking Map

Zoom in for paddling locations.

There are essentially two ways to find paddling locations using this interactive kayak map. 

For example, if I want to find kayaking near me, I would allow the map to access my current location. If you’re using a tablet or phone, you may need to go into your settings to enable the app to access your location. 

Giving the interactive map access to my location will show me my local waterways with nearby kayaking spots.

Another way to use this interactive map to find paddling locations is to use the zoom function on the face of the map. This can be an easier way to find the best kayaking spots in other locations, such as if you’re heading on vacation or you want to travel to discover new waterways.

If you are accessing the map on a phone or tablet, you can use your fingers to zoom in on a particular area. Alternatively, and if you’re using a computer, you can use the + and – icons at the top left corner of the map. 

You can also zoom by double clicking on an area of the map for a more in depth look at a specific area. 

Use The Magnifying Glass

The red icons with the magnifying glass show there are multiple kayaking spots in that location. You can click on the magnifying glass to zoom into that area. 

More magnifying glass icons will appear, again showing multiple paddling locations. You will also see red dot icons that indicate a specific kayaking spot, such as a boat launch. 

When you click on the red dots you can then click on the “location details” highlighted in red under the name of the location. This will give you details of that particular body of water or boat ramp, such as parking information and GPS coordinates for how to get there.

You can also use your mouse or fingers to move around the map to check out the wider area or move around the world to check out kayak locations in different countries.

Add New Location

A great feature of this interactive kayak map is that you can add new locations. This means if you discover a great kayaking spot with beautiful scenery and lots of wildlife, you can add it to the map for others to discover. 

At the time of writing, there are over 48,000 paddling locations registered on the kayaking map . And these kayaking spots are all over the world. This means if you’re heading abroad on vacation, you can find the best kayaking spots wherever you go. 

This makes it useful for both beginners and experienced kayakers looking for their next kayaking adventure. 

To add a new location, click anywhere on the interactive kayak map. This will let you add your kayaking spot and you can add details of the launch or the type of conditions to expect.

One of the best things about this map is that because it’s interactive, it will keep updated with new users adding new locations all the time. And it’s a great way of discovering new spots with expert knowledge from the locals who added it to the map.

This can be particularly helpful for whitewater kayaking, as other experienced kayakers can add the ratings of the whitewater rapids to the details section. And as other kayakers run the rapids, the information can be updated depending on the conditions or the time of year.

Add Your Kayaking Trip

Another excellent feature of this interactive kayak map is that you can add your kayaking trip to the app. This means others can learn about your trip and the route you took, including launches, take-outs, and anything you saw on your kayaking adventure. 

You can include the type of conditions you encountered, for example, if there were any whitewater rapids. You can also include any wildlife that you saw or types of fish that you caught.

To add your trip to the map, click on an existing location on the map, such as a launch ramp. Or you can click anywhere on the map to add your trip from a custom location, for example, if your launch or starting location  is not yet on the map.

Clicking on the location will bring up a text box with either “location details” or “add a trip”. Sometimes the location will have both of these in the text box. If there is just the option to click on “location details”, click on this and you’ll be taken to the location’s page where you will find the “add a trip” button. 

Click on “add a trip” to be taken to a webform where you can fill out trip information, such as duration, safety notes, portage notes, and skill levels. You can also add whether there are hiking trails and fishing spots along the way, as well as if the trip is suitable for a canoe or paddle board.

You can even upload photos from your trip to let others see what the kayaking was like, as well as any scenic views that are not to be missed.

Get Driving Directions

One of the main features of any map is to help you find your way. And this interactive map is no different. But unlike old-school paper maps, this kayaking map can help you get to the launch without having to actually read the map yourself.

Once you’ve found the kayaking location you want to visit, you can click on the “location details” to open up the detailed page on that launch site and then click on “get driving directions”. 

This opens up a new page with Google Maps, which can be synced to your car’s sat nav system. Or you can link it to your phone and then connect to your car, so you can follow the directions from your home (or wherever you are) straight to the launch ramp.

Most rivers are also often affected by weather conditions, such as heavy rain, snow melt, or high tides. Dams can also affect the water levels and the flow of many rivers. 

That being said, rivers can be great places to go kayaking. If you’re a beginner, it can be best to search for a slow-moving river. Often, rivers that have kayak rentals or canoe rentals nearby tend to be good kayaking spots for new paddlers. 

It can be easy to find river access points using the interactive map. For example, if I want to find river kayaking near me, I would use the map to zoom in on my preferred location or a specific river and look for the red dots to point me to the best launch points.

As well as using the interactive map to locate new paddling spots, you can also check out your state’s local wildlife department website. Websites for your state’s Department of Natural Resources or the Fish and Wildlife Commission can be useful resources for finding designated water trails.

You may also find information on paddling trails, as well as fishing information on the national US Fish and Wildlife Service website.

Additionally, you can use the interactive kayaking map to find the best spots for whitewater kayaking or other water sports nearby.

Lake Kayaking Near Me

Lakes can be some of the best places for beginners to go kayaking. You’ll usually find there are less currents to deal with in lakes compared to rivers and the ocean. This can make it easier to control your kayak, which is important if it’s your first time kayaking. 

The interactive map can pinpoint good kayaking spots at lakes all across the USA and many other countries around the world. 

When searching for nearby lake kayaking, using the map, you can click on the location details for the specific lake and it should tell you whether there is parking at the location. It can also show other amenities at the site, such as picnic tables and restrooms.

You can check out the comments at the bottom of the page to see other kayakers’ recommendations or notes about the launch. However, not all of the locations have comments.

But the comments section can be a good place to look if you want to know whether motorized vessels are allowed on the lake or if overnight camping is allowed, for example.

Sea And Ocean Kayaking Near Me

Kayaking in the ocean can be a lot of fun. There’s definitely a lot of water to explore. But coastal waterways are not the easiest places to paddle if you’re a new kayaker. 

Paddling a sea kayak along a coastline can require some additional kayaking skills . 

However, kayaking in a recreational kayak close to the shore at the beach can be ideal for all skill levels on a calm day with no wind or waves.

Currents and tides can cause problems for kayakers on coastal waterways, so it’s important to be aware of tide times for your particular coastline. 

It can sometimes be more difficult to launch a kayak at the beach because there are usually waves to contend with in the surf zone. 

You might find it easier to launch in a sheltered bay where there is shallow water and a sloping beach. 

The kayaking map can often point you in the direction of good coastal launch sites. If you find one that’s not on the map yet, remember to add it in as a new location so you can easily find it the next time and others can also find it.

Remember, coastal waterways tend to have a lot of other boat traffic.  

Even experienced kayakers are difficult to see from larger vessels. And large vessels take longer to turn than kayakers, so always keep out of the way of large boats and out of shipping lanes. 

Where there are small islands and inlets, you might find good take-out spots to stop for a picnic. Or if you find one yourself, add it to the map to help others following your paddling route.

Can I Go Kayaking For Free In The Local Area?

If you have your own kayak, you can often go kayaking for free, as long as the launch site is on public land, such as national parks, and not private. Private launch sites often require you to pay a small fee to launch your own kayak or park your vehicle. Some national parks also require an entry fee.

Some bodies of water, such as protected areas or areas with restricted access, may require you to have a permit for kayaking. For example, you need a permit to kayak along the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon.

Other paddlers will often post comments regarding launch fees on the kayak location’s details.

How Can I Find Out About Water Conditions In Local Kayaking Spots?

Do I Need Any Permits Or Licenses To Kayak In My Area?
