15 great day trips from derby you need to go on [2024].

Derby local?

I’ve lived here all my life (minus three years in London for uni).

But as much as I enjoy my city for brunching with friends and supporting local businesses, sometimes it’s nice to head out on one of the many amazing day trips from Derby.

One thing I will say about living in Derby is that you are just a stone’s throw from the Peak District.

And if I was to list all the areas of the Peak District that you absolutely have to visit, it would take me a lifetime.

However, if you enjoy walking and love being at one with nature, I’d recommend heading out on one of the best Peak District walks .

But that’s not what we’re here to talk about.

So from country houses and museums to national parks and beaches, here are 15 great day trips from Derby that you need to go on!

1. Chatsworth House

chatsworth-house-with-green-grounds-and-stream-in-foreground-day-trips-from-derby

How far away is it? 29.8 miles

How long does it take to get there? 47 minutes

Chosen as Britain’s favourite country home in multiple surveys over the years, Chatsworth House is a beautiful stately home that has been in the Cavendish family since 1549.

The house itself is beautiful, but don’t worry if you don’t set foot in the house at all.

There are some lush gardens to walk around, from which you can admire the beauty of the house from afar and enjoy the fresh Derbyshire air.

You can also take a visit to the farmyard, where you can handle animals or head out on a tractor-trailer tour.

2. Crich Tramway Village

old-vintage-tram-outside-at-crich-tramway-village-museum

How far away is it? 15 miles

How long does it take to get there? 26 minutes by car

Just 26 minutes from Derby, Crich Tramway Village is a great day out for all the family – and even your dog!

The museum takes you back in time with vintage tram rides and period streets that house tearooms and a pub.

There’s plenty to get involved in here, from rides on the trams to a woodland walk and sculpture trail.

The trail itself is accessible to all, meaning no matter how much energy you have, you can go for an explore.

Along the trail, you’ll discover stunning views, outdoor games and a plethora of different sculptures.

Be sure to also look out for the 19 th Century Bradford Cabmen’s Shelter which showcases the story of its restoration through art!

The period street itself houses The Red Lion pub, which serves local beer, hot drinks and cakes.

But if you don’t fancy the pub, there are a couple of other options to choose from.

Rita’s Tea Rooms is the perfect place to take a break and Barnett’s Sweet Shop houses many different flavours of old fashioned sweets and lots of branded ice-creams.

3. Sudbury Hall and the Museum of Childhood

grand-sudbury-hall-and-grass-on-sunny-day-day-trips-from-derby

How far away is it? 16.2 miles

How long does it take to get there? 22 minutes by car

National Trust property Sudbury Hall is a beautiful Grade 1 listed building that warrants a visit in its own right.

There are so many gorgeous walks around the garden, and a lovely tea shop and souvenir shop to pop into.

However, if country houses aren’t really your thing, you’ll also find the Museum of Childhood housed within the 19 th Century servants’ wing.

Taking you back to your childhood, bringing back fond memories of toys and games of yesteryear, The Museum of Childhood is a great visit for people of all ages.

You can even get involved in the fun and games by becoming a chimney sweep, a scullion or even a Victorian schoolchild.

people-walking-around-matlock-town-centre-on-sunny-day-day-trips-from-derby

How far away is it? 21.5 miles

How long does it take to get there? 31 minutes by car

Reminiscent of a seaside town, there is so much to see and do in Matlock.

If you just want to get out and explore, then head for the Heights of Abraham .

Well-known for their cable cars that take you up to the summit of Masson Hill, the 360-degree views are unparalleled here.

Not only do you get to experience the cable cars, but you also get to explore The Great Masson and Rutland Caverns which were formed over 350 million years ago.

The tour of Masson Cavern takes around 35 minutes and Rutland Cavern takes around 20 minutes.

However, there are plenty of other things to do in Matlock if heights and caverns aren’t your thing.

Make sure you’ve got your 1ps and 2ps to hand as Matlock is home to a fun selection of arcades – just like at the seaside!

You can even follow up the arcade with some of the best fish and chips ever.

I mean, it’d be rude to visit Matlock without finishing the day with some fish and chips, wouldn’t it?

For those of you who fancy something different, there are plenty of independent shops to enjoy and lots of great walks around the area too.

5. Kedleston Hall

How far away is it? 5.6 miles

How long does it take to get there? 13 minutes by car

National Trust Property Kedleston Hall is situated just thirteen minutes outside the centre of Derby.

Surrounded by historic parkland, the 18 th Century mansion is beautiful both inside and out.

Inside, the hall displays paintings and sculptures and houses a lot of its original furnishing, all designed for entertaining.

However, you don’t just visit Kedleston for the house, as there are gorgeous grounds to wander around too. It’s the perfect spot for a good dog walk!

As well as the gardens, there is a lovely tea room for you to sit and have a slice of cake and a cuppa.

6. Twycross Zoo

tiger-with-mouth-open-at-twycross-zoo

How far away is it? 31.3 miles

How long does it take to get there? 36 minutes by car

Love animals? Then Twycross Zoo is one of the best day trips from Derby for you.

Just 36 minutes from Derby, the zoo has one of the largest collections of monkeys and apes in the western world, being the only zoo in the UK to house all four types of monkeys.

There are eight zones across the zoo, my favourite of which is Conservation Way which is home to gibbons, meerkats and endangered Amur Leopards, the world’s rarest big cat.

Wet and Wild is home to penguins, flamingos, and cranes, and the Borneo Longhouse is home to sloths, tapirs, tigers, and rhinos.

The other areas are the Kingdom of Apes, Life in the Trees, Explorer Zone, Himalaya and also the Nature Reserve. There really is so much to explore!

7. National Brewery Centre

How far away is it? 12.6 miles

How long does it take to get there? 18 minutes by car

Set in the heart of Burton-upon-Trent, the National Brewery Centre houses a museum, an outdoor play area for children, a beer boutique, vintage vehicles, a café, a souvenir shop and an escape room.

Yep, all of that packed into one place!

The museum itself incorporates large elements of the original Bass Collection, and in the museum, you are able to learn about the Bass family and their role in the development of brewing.

If you don’t fancy learning about brewing or it just isn’t your thing, you’ll love their 60-minute escape rooms .

Take your pick from two different scenarios: The Brewery Bandits or The Secret of Silas.

8. Heart of the Country

How far away is it? 26.1 miles

How long does it take to get there? 29 minutes by car

Heart of the Country is set in the ‘heart’ of rural Staffordshire on a converted farm, with a handful of small shops and coffee shops for you to explore on a sunny Saturday morning.

You can even visit their two pot-bellied pigs as you head in the Green Fairy woods!

The trail around the Green Fairy Woods shows you the homes of green fairies who make their homes from locally recycled products.

You can even make something for the fairies, but it must be made from recycled, salvaged or donated products in line with the fairies’ ethos!

The trail itself takes around 20-30 minutes to complete.

9. Alton Towers

How far away is it? 24 miles

How long does it take to get there? 38 minutes by car

Just a 38-minute drive from Derby, Alton Towers houses not only the famous theme park but also mini-golf, a spa, water park and hotel complex, meaning you could easily make a weekend out of visiting the resort.

Home to ten rollercoasters including Oblivion, Wicker Man, Nemesis and The Smiler to name a few, this is one of the best day trips from Derby for adrenaline junkies.

But don’t let the rides be the only reason you go!

In the heart of the park sits Alton Towers Mansion, which houses beautiful gardens – the perfect picnic spot in the summer season.

10. Skegness

This is one of the best day trips from Derby for beach bums!

But let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a beach? Well, Skegness is a local seaside for those who live in the East Midlands.

Just over two hours away from Derby, it offers all the delights of a quintessential British seaside resort, with its arcades, ice-cream, fish and chips and crazy golf.

What’s not to love?!

Skegness is known for its expansive sandy beaches and great donkey rides.

You may need binoculars to see the sea but you know what, for the people of the East Midlands it’s our seaside and despite what we might say, we love it!

About five minutes along the coast is Fantasy Island , a must-visit for those who love a thrill ride and a bit of shopping.

With its roller coasters and markets, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

11. Derwent Dam

How far away is it? 52.6 miles

How long does it take to get there? 1 hour and 15 minutes by car

Fan of The Dambusters? Then Derwent Dam is one of the best day trips from Derby for you!

Set in the middle of three reservoirs in the Upper Derwent Valley, the dam is most well-known for the Dambusters flyover during the Second World War.

Used due to its similarities with the German dams, the 617 Squadron used the dam to practice low-level flights needed for the Dam Buster raids.

One of the towers at the Dam houses the Derwent Valley Museum which displays the history of Squadron 617.

However, if you just fancy soaking up the views, there’s a lovely walk the whole way around the dam, with different routes depending on your ability.

12. National Memorial Arboretum

Then the National Memorial Arboretum is the place for you.

Set in 150-acres of the National Forest, The arboretum is a monument to all the servicemen and women who lost their lives in World War 2.

There are trails throughout the arboretum which pass by the different memorials laid out across the 150 acres.

13. Ashbourne

houses-amid-trees-on-cloudy-day-in-ashbourne-derbyshire

How far away is it? 13.9 miles

How long does it take to get there? 24 minutes by car

Known as the Gateway to Dovedale, tourists mainly visit Ashbourne for its Tudor and Georgian heritage.

With more than 200 listed buildings, including a coaching inn and townhouses, it’s great for a walk around and a spot of shopping.

The Greenman Pub houses the longest inn sign in the world and there’s a 17th-century mansion where The King of Ashbourne, Dr John Taylor once lived.

Ashbourne is also famous for the Royal Shrovetide football match, which bears little resemblance to the football we know and love today.

Unique, unruly and just as crazy as it sounds, the match is played each Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday!

Ashbourne also sits on the Tissington Trail, which links Dovedale and Pennine Bridleway, where you can walk, cycle or even take your horse out for a ride.

14. Sherwood Forest

trail-leading-through-pine-trees-in-sherwood-forest

How far away is it? 38 miles

How long does it take to get there? 53 minutes by car

Made famous by Robin Hood and his band of Merry Men, Sherwood Forest is just up the road from Derby.

Aside from its associations with Robin Hood, the forest is gorgeous and its woodland trails really allow you to get back to nature.

The Giants Trial is the most idyllic walk, which takes around 30 minutes to complete and introduces you to some of Europe’s largest collection of ancient oaks.

A great challenge is to try to find all 997 oak trees!

However, there are plenty of other walks to choose from, including The Major Oak Trail.

Lasting approximately 45 minutes, the trail takes you past The Major Oak, which is famous for being Robin Hood’s hiding place.

15. Calke Abbey

grand-calke-abbey-in-green-grounds-on-sunny-day-day-trips-from-derby

How far away is it? 11.2 miles

How long does it take to get there? 28 minutes by car

Calke Abbey is said to be the most un-stately stately home imaginable.

The home itself is somewhere between neglect and dereliction but it will still have you in awe as you walk around the house and admire the fine artwork and furniture it houses.

On arrival at the park itself, you drive along a beautifully lined Lime Tree Avenue with sheep playing in the fields beside you. Soon the grand house will appear.

Similar to many other stately houses, there are plenty of walks around the area for you, your friends and family and even your little four-legged furry friends to enjoy.

But that’s not it! The ground themselves also house a farmyard, a church, a tearoom and a souvenir shop.

Great for grabbing a bite to eat after a long walk.

Be sure to also keep an eye out for the different local stall events they host throughout the year where you can shop and browse at your own leisure.

And if all of that didn’t already take your fancy, there is also the option to take a picnic, explore the woodland areas, and meet the local animals.

Places to visit near Derby that cost £10 or less per person

Hardwick old hall.

A large stone manor with many windows reflecting into pond

Cost: Adult £10, child £5, family £25, National Trust members free.

Hardwick Hall is a real gem in Derbyshire and a great option for a day out or as an additional stop on a Peak District day trip.

The Elizabethan Hall was built by Bess of Hardwick, who was a Derbyshire local and built the first Chatsworth House with her first husband, William Cavendish.

After Cavendish died, Elizabeth remarried three times, each time inheriting large amounts of power and wealth, and she became the most powerful woman in England after the Queen.

After four marriages she moved back to her childhood home of Hardwick Hall and started to build the New Hardwick Hall right next door.

You can visit the house and gardens as well as explore the extensive parkland, all owned by the National Trust.

The ruins of Old Hardwick Hall sit nextdoor to the property and are owned by English Heritage, you can buy a ticket for both if you’re interested.

In the house, you’ll be taken on a guided tour to learn about the house’s history from the Tudor period to today.

Time from Derby: 30 minutes

Cost: Adult £8, child £4, family £20, National Trust members are free

Not everyone loves visiting National Trust properties, but this one is 100% worth seeing because it’s unusual in that it’s completely untouched and unrestored since it was acquired by the National Trust, except for essential safety repairs.

Many stately homes and manors fell into disrepair because families couldn’t afford to maintain them. National Trust then usually acquired and restored these properties to their former glory. However at Calke Abbey, you’re able to get a true picture of the deterioration and decline of these stately home and the powerful families who lost everything.

You can also explore the parkland where there’s also red deer roaming, gorgeous walled gardens, a nature reserve and an orangeary as well as walking routes and a cycling trail.

Cost: Adult £4-£18, child £2-£9, family £30-£40

There’s always something so exciting about steam trains, for adults and children!

So just 30 minutes from Derby is the Great Central Railway in Loughborough where you can see and ride the UK’s only double track steam train.

Torquay, Cruise and Cream Tea

Thoroughly enjoyed 5 day break to Torquay staying at the Derwent Hotel. Changeover from feeder coach to holiday Coach was straightforward. Hotel although dated was clean with room cleaned and replenished every day. Staff very pleasant and no complaints with the food, good choices and plenty of it. Entertainment each evening was enjoyable. Excursions were good especially boat trip and cream tea. Our driver was very good and knowledgeable regarding places visited. No complaints and would recommend.

PERFECT DRIVER / Terrible Hotel

The Driver and coach was Good , no complaint But the Beresford Hotel in Newquay was terrible , dirty Carpets in hall and exposed Ariel on window sill ,grubby decor , Hanging Shower door , which is dangerous and No cover on the shower drain , plus room not cleaned or changed once ! We had to complain and ask for fresh towels as the wet ones had not been collected till manager came up. After complaint !! One night the food was bad Burnt apple pie , covered by funny tasting Custard and a couple had a TEA BAG in their Custard , everyone left the food that evening !!! Nice Staff but hotel really let the holiday Down , we would Truly think twice before booking unless we explored the Hotel we were staying at . Really disappointed , I do have photos to send should you want Them disgusting !!!!

French and Italian Rivera

The holiday was excellent lots of trips some not good for those with less mobility Rob the driver was very helpful and took care of people. The hotel was difficult for the coach to drive to due to narrow roads and one way system both drivers were excellent in negotiating this Shearing should look at this. One of the most fun holidays in ages. The trip to Monaco well worth paying extra for the guided tour

Chelmsford to Isle of Wight April 24 Nice comfy coach with nice helpful drivers Cane & Dave, Plenty to do and see, hotel (Broadway Park) was much better than the neggy reviews read before trip. Room nice, clean, comfy beds, great nights sleep, breakfast and dinner food was nice with plenty of choice. Staff at hotel probably stretched a little but all were friendly, polite and helpful.

Amazingly good and would visit again.

Woah where to start. Our driver Jim was so nice and gave us so much reassurance on the journey there!! It was so bwautiful!! Scenery was excellent and the hotel was divine. The staff there were incredibly friendly, kind and welcoming. Definitely one we will be visiting gain. The food was absolutely lovely and my mum felt very spoilt. We didn’t want to come home. It was incredible and worth the money.

Lovely 5 day break to Holland visiting…

Lovely 5 day break to Holland visiting Keuekenoff, Amsterdam, The Hague and picturesque Delft. Dan & Andy our crew were excellent and nothing was too much trouble, they made it a very special time. The Coach in Holland was roomy and comfortable. The hotel in Den Haag was first class, bedrooms really lovely and modern. The buffet breakfast was vast. Excellent meals in the hotel restaurant.

Gt Yarmouth trip

Gt Yarmouth trip. Excellent holiday apart from initial confusion at South Mymms for feeder coach. Had to ask a driver of a non labelled coach if it was correct to transfer to Cobham to board trip coach as no previous information given about this.

A good well-planned holiday

This holiday was very well-organised and the hotel, in general, great. The selection of activities and the useful option of a day in Amsterdam were very good and most appropriate. We were looked after very well by the team. The hotel was very comfortable. However, there were some minor points that were not as good. The lack of a choice of food for dinner and the very slow service of this meal, particularly on the first evening, as well as its service on cold plates, could be a problem for some, although the food itself was very good. In addition, the re-stocking of tea and coffee was not carried out on every day.

Five days experiencing an enjoyable holiday

Thewent according to plan with changes between coaches on route carried out efficiently. The hotel near Hexham was comfortable and the meals were of a high quality and delicious. The staff in the hotel were most helpful and our coach driver absolutely brilliant. It proved to be a stay of the highest quality….thank you for the great five day holiday.

Little boats of the Mediterranean 13…

Little boats of the Mediterranean 13 April 2024. Drivers Chris and Blake provided an excellent service through out the Holiday. The Hotel in roses was brilliant, excellent food, good location and excellent views from the balcony. The visit to Cadaques could have been longer to enable us to explore more in relation to Matisse. The other excursions were as described providing a balanced itinerary. Taxi provision at ferrybridge caused issues for two couples who were from Beverly area , where as we were from Selby/local area.

Thank you for your excellent 4-star review. Receiving such positive feedback is truly gratifying as it offers valuable insights into your tour experience and understanding what resonates with our customers empowers us to consistently refine and improve our tours. First class booking service

I have just booked a short break with Shearings and the service I received from Heidi Hopper was first class. I have booked many times with Leger but on this occasion the service I received from Heidi was the best. She was very helpful and very polite and she went above and beyond to get a satisfactory result. Heidi is a credit to Leger/Shearings and I would have no hesitation in getting Heidi to sort out more holiday bookings for me. Thank you Heidi and Leger/Shearings for a first class service.

Paul was an excellent driver who was very knowledgeable great hotel in Ramsey good food and lovely helpful staff. The only negative point of this break was the taxi pick ups which we had to wait around for and the driver on the outward journey was quite rude and unhelpful and didnt even know he was working for Shearings initially.

Receiving such positive feedback is truly gratifying as it offers valuable insights into your tour experience and understanding what resonates with our customers empowers us to consistently refine and improve our tours. Fantastic 5 day break to Holland

Fantastic 5 day break to Holland, visiting Keukenhof, Amsterdam, The Hague & Delft. Our crew were Dan & Andy, in a very comfortable coach and they were outstanding. Lots of fun and nothing was too much trouble. We stayed in The Hague in a fabulous hotel, with lovely rooms, very comfortable beds, a great shower and a buffet breakfast which was top notch! Yes, the weather could have been better and there is a lot of travelling, but we loved it! Thanks so much and to the other people we met, as we had many laughs!

Thank you for your excellent 5-star review. Receiving such positive feedback is incredibly rewarding for us as it provides valuable insight into your tour experience. Understanding what resonates with our customers allows us to continuously enhance our tours. We trust that your tour with us was thoroughly enjoyable, and we eagerly anticipate the opportunity to welcome you on board again soon. Warm regards Shearings Customer Relations (CH)

Holiday on Isle of Wight staying at Broadway Park Hotel

We had an enjoyable 5 day holiday on the Isle of Wight. The coach and drivers Cain and David were excellent. The hotel was very clean and staff were great only small criticism was the food breakfast was good but evening meals were just OK portions were small and not very exciting but certainly very adequate.Would strongly recommend this holiday.By the way the trips were really good.

Scarborough and Whitby

Very disappointing trip. Trip to a from Scarborough took 10 hours, I have been to Scotland with Shearing's for a lot less time. Logistics were a nightmare for collecting and dropping off did not make sense, it seemed not enough people were on the trip so we had to go out of our way to collect for other areas, i was first collection at Cambridge, we went to Huntingdon then Bedford then Milton Keynes then onto Rugby, the driver ran out of driving time so we had to stop a service station for over 30 mins which i fully understand but we were 20 mins away from Rugby. Optional excursion to York did not happen as only 5 people wanted to go and they needed minimum of 15 people to attend the trip for it to go ahead. The trip to Whitby and Gotland was too long needed shorter time at both locations. Hotel was ok needed updating and the rooms were not 100% clean. Food was mediocre.

Great service today

Sue was very helpful. She found a single occupancy room with a sea view for me. Although she was unable to do this on Friday she rang back today as promised, having been successful. Sue was friendly, polite and very efficient.

Thank you for choosing Shearings and for sharing your experience with us. We are delighted to hear that Sue provided you with exceptional service. We understand the importance of finding the perfect accommodation, and we are pleased that Sue was able to secure a single occupancy room with a sea view for you. It is fantastic to hear that she followed up as promised and successfully arranged this for you. Sue's friendly, polite, and efficient assistance exemplifies the level of service we strive to deliver. We will be sure to pass along your kind words to Sue. Thank you once again for choosing Shearings. We look forward to welcoming you on your upcoming trip and providing you with a memorable experience. Many thanks, Shearings (BW)

This is the first time I booked a bus…

This is the first time I booked a bus holiday abroad. I must say that it was really enjoyable less one bit- the journey there and back was tiring for me. However everything else was great, the drivers were fun and kept everything light hearted. They were both very helpful. Everything that was advertised in the brochure happened. The company went out of their way to get us home the fastest possible way after a big delay at customs in Calais. I really appreciated this. If it was not for the long drive to the destination and back I would not hesitate to go again- I am thinking that I may fly there and go about the places with Shearings for trips etc- I have noticed that this is an option. I have noticed that some people in the bus were not bothered by the distance and they have done many such trips- therefore I would say it is a matter of personal preference. I would recommend the company . I went to Amsterdam on this occasion.

Dear Gabriela Thank you for your kind 5-star review. Receiving such positive feedback is truly gratifying as it offers valuable insights into your tour experience and understanding what resonates with our customers empowers us to consistently refine and improve our tours. Your constructive feedback provides us with the opportunity to evaluate the tour for any necessary enhancements, ensuring complete satisfaction. Theatre dress code Theatregoers these days don't dress in black tie or ball-gowns so you can leave those at home. However 'being comfy' is the order of the day so smart but casual dress will be fine.

Etiquette You will be requested to turn off your mobile before the show starts. Also, cameras are prohibited. Don't spoil the enjoyment of others and refrain from talking when you shouldn't be.

When does the show start? Matinee performances start at around 2pm. Evening performances around 7-7.45pm. You'll need to be in your seat approx. 15-30 minutes prior to the show starting otherwise you’ll be let in at a convenient point in the show.

The Interval Should you wish to have a drink or snacks during the interval, order these before the show starts as it will prevent you having to queue.

Is it wheelchair friendly? Please note that the majority of theatres are very old and therefore do not necessarily cater for wheelchairs. It would be wise to enquire about facilities before you decide to book your tickets.

I'd like tickets for a Sunday or Bank Holiday performance? Nearly all West End theatres are only open Mon-Sat. A few now offer Sunday shows but they are an exception. Most theatres only close on Christmas Day.

What's the difference between The Stalls and Dress Circle? The Stalls are located on the ground floor. Dress Circle is the floor above The Stalls. Upper Circle (Grand or Royal) is the next one up. The Balcony is the circle above the Upper Circle.

Where are the best views? Some of the best views are from the middle of The Stalls. Be far enough back so you are not straining your neck. Good views can also be from Dress and Upper Circle. You’ll need binoculars for The Balcony.

What else can you do in London? Shop till you drop in Oxford Street, enjoy the entertainment in Covent Garden, have a wonderful meal in Leicester Square, cruise along The Thames or take a flight on the London Eye.

Where to eat before the show? There are usually a variety of cafes, bars and restaurants located within the vicinity of the theatre. If you mention to your waiter/waitress that you have theatre tickets, they will turn your meal around quickly for you.
