The Great Hall

The Smile is heading to Alexandra Palace in March 2024 as part of their upcoming headline European tour.

Comprising Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood, plus Tom Skinner of Son of Kemet, the Smile first debuted Bending Hectic during the supergroup’s Montreux Jazz Festival appearance in 2022; since then, the track became a word-of-mouth phenomenon, with fans and critics calling for its release. After a year of waiting, the song marked the band’s first piece of new music in 2023.

Now, the Smile has announced its new album Wall Of Eyes (out 26 January on XL Recodings), the follow-up to their 2022 debut LP A Light For Attracting Attention , which received critical acclaim from the likes of The Guardian, Pitchfork, The Observer, The Needle Drop, Rolling Stone, New York Magazine, Uncut and MOJO, and more. Recorded between Oxford and Abbey Road Studios, the album boasts production and mixing by Sam Petts-Davies and enchanting string arrangements by the London Contemporary Orchestra.

The Smile’s new album  Wall Of Eyes  is the follow up to the band’s 2022 debut LP  A Light For Attracting Attention , which received critical acclaim from the likes of The Guardian, Pitchfork, The Observer, The Needle Drop, Rolling Stone, New York Magazine, Uncut and MOJO, and more.

The Smile played a series of brilliantly received live shows in the US and Mexico in June and July of this year and released “Bending Hectic” from the new album in June, having initially debuted the song at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2022.

Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood’s the Smile Announce European Tour

The Smile will embark on their first tour this spring. The trio of Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood , with jazz drummer Tom Skinner, will sweep through Europe in May, starting in Zagreb and finishing up in July at Switzerland’s Montreux Jazz Festival. The tour includes consecutive nights at London’s Roundhouse and Philharmonie de Paris. Check out the dates below.

Since debuting last year, the Smile have shared a pair of singles: “ You Will Never Work in Television Again ” and “ The Smoke ,” both produced by Nigel Godrich. They’ll announce more shows soon, according to the announcement.

The Smile Are Coming Back for More With 2023 Tour Dates

Radiohead offshoot the Smile have announced a second run of North American tour dates for this summer.

The trio — which features Thom Yorke , Jonny Greenwood , and Tom Skinner — will launch the 14-date run on June 22 at the National Auditorium in Mexico City. The run will continue over the next month wrapping July 20 at the Factory in Chesterfield, Missouri. 

Tickets for all shows will go on sale on Feb. 3. Complete information is available on the Smile ’s website.

Along with announcing the tour, the Smile are also prepping another new live release, Europe: Live Recordings 2022 . As the title suggests, the vinyl-only EP — out March 10 — features six songs recorded at various points during the band’s European run last year, including “The Opposite,” “Thin Thing,” Waving a White Flag,” and a rendition of Yorke’s 2009 solo track, “FeelingPulledApartByHorses.”

The Smile reveal European tour dates for summer 2022

The Smile, the new group comprising Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood and Sons Of Kemet’s Tom Skinner, have today announced details of their debut European tour for 2022, including UK dates in London at the Roundhouse, Edinburgh at the Usher Hall and Manchester at the Albert Hall. Please find the full tour dates below. The shows go on general sale on Friday 4th February at 10am GMT. Existing and new subscribers (who join the Smile Mailing list  here ) will receive a link to access a 10am GMT pre-sale on 2 nd  February.

Last weekend The Smile played three consecutive sold-out live shows across sixteen hours and three time-zones at Magazine, London. The Smile review – Thom Yorke on jolly and utterly joyful form

Eventim Apollo, London Yorke, Jonny Greenwood and Tom Skinner’s pandemic-born band fly free from expectations, taking in everything from krautrock to Afrobeat

T he precise status of the Smile is intriguingly TBC. Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood began making music with Sons of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner to stay busy during the pandemic and they have already released more music in two years than Radiohead have managed in 15. While Yorke’s solo albums were clearly a side hustle – opaque, electronic, on the run from tunes – and Greenwood’s film scores something else entirely, the Smile have enough substance to rival the day job. The restless Greenwood once said he wished that Radiohead albums were “90 per cent as good, but come out twice as often” and this is one way of getting his wish.

The Smile’s freewheeling versatility is doubly impressive live. Backlit by an LED screen which seems to manifest the title of new album Wall of Eyes , they take in galloping jazz-rock, neurotic Afrobeat, giallo terror-synths, slinky dub reggae, the hairier end of krautrock and, in the shape of the tremendous, strobe-lit Bending Hectic, a classic slow-burning rock anthem. The instrumentation, too, mutates from song to song. Half-hidden by his eternally youthful mop of hair, Greenwood wrenches an orchestra of options out of his guitar and hops from synthesiser to piano to harp on Speech Bubbles alone. Saxophonist Robert Stillman punches up the intensity, notably on majestic new song Instant Psalm.

While Yorke’s lyrics are the usual labyrinth of suspicions, phobias and vendettas, his between-song energy could almost qualify as jolly. He kicks off the Can-like Zero Sum with a growl of “here we fucking go” and whips the crowd into roaring the crony-bashing final refrain of Friend of a Friend. Perhaps the singer’s ease is down to the pleasure of flying free from expectations, playing new material without sensing fans itching for Paranoid Android.

For many years, every record Yorke was involved in felt like some kind of argument, repudiation or escape strategy. This band, however, follows every lead and says yes to every good idea. Their name is probably some barbed reference to surveillance capitalism or political doublespeak but tonight’s joyful adventure suggests a simpler reading. Smile!

About Porter Robinson:

At age 18, the North Carolina-based producer and songwriter burst onto the scene with a complex, bombastic brand of electro-house. Following the major success of his 2014 debut album Worlds , Porter released the RIAA Gold single “Shelter” with Madeon in 2016, followed by a Shelter Live Tour spanning 43 dates and four continents. The following year, Porter began releasing music under a new alias, Virtual Self, which led to his first Grammy nomination for the BBC Radio 1 hit single “Ghost Voices.” In 2019, Porter put on the first Second Sky Festival, which sold out all 30,000 tickets for the two-day festival in a single day. Later that year was his debut of one of two exclusive full live band performances, first at Second Sky 2022 and again in 2023 at the Coachella Main Stage.

Porter Robinson Says ‘SMILE! :D’ For His Newly Announced World Tour In Support Of His Third Album

On July 26, Porter Robinson is set to unveil SMILE! :D , his third and latest album. Robinson has long been a strong live performer and he’s going all out in support of his new album: Today (April 25), he announced the SMILE! :D World Tour , a massive run hitting five continents between August 2024 and March 2025.

The ticket pre-sale starts on April 30 at 10 a.m. local time, and fans can register for early access at Robinson’s website . The general on-sale will follow on May 3 at 10 a.m. local time. More information can be found on Robinson’s website.

Frank Turner announces summer 2024 UK tour

The tour announcement comes after the singer revealed his attempt to break the record for the most shows played in 24 hours

Frank Turner has announced a UK headlining tour set to begin later this summer.

Turner and his band The Sleeping Souls will kick off the tour at Glastonbury on June 28 where they are set to perform on the Avalon stage. They will then make their way across the UK with stops in Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow, Southampton, Birmingham, Nottingham, Cardiff, Oxford and Norwich. The headlining dates will wrap up in Suffolk on July 26.

The Meffs will be serving as opening support. A ticket pre-sale will begin tomorrow (April 24) for fans who have pre-ordered Turner’s upcoming album ‘Undefeated’ by 11:59pm today (April 23). The pre-sale will commence at 11am Wednesday April 24.

Speaking about the upcoming dates in a press release, Turner said: “We’re getting closer to the day when ‘Undefeated’ is out in the world. We’ve announced and sold out 14 shows in the UK – all on the same day – so let’s add a few more! I’m bringing the tour, the new album, the Sleeping Souls, and my excellent friends The Meffs, to a string of dates in rooms I know well and love around the UK this July, in between our festival shows.”

The announcement of his UK tour comes after he announced his attempt to break the record for the most shows played in 24 hours in honour of the Music Venue Trust .

In celebration of his upcoming 3,000th show and the release of his 10th album ‘Undefeated’ on May 3, Turner will attempt to play 15 shows of minimum 20-minute sets on May 4. Sponsored by taxi app FREENOW, Turner will travel circa 500 miles to play shows from Liverpool to Southampton.

Turner says of his challenge: “With nearly 3000 shows under my belt, I’ve never been one to do things by halves or shirk a challenge – I once played all 50 American states in 50 days, for goodness sake. For the release of my tenth studio album, ‘Undefeated’, I will be making an attempt at a world record: the most number of shows in different cities in 24 hours.

“It’s not just self-promotion either,” he added. “We’re working with 13 independent record shops and 15 independent grassroots music venues for the shows, highlighting two bits of the infrastructure of the underground that I care about most. It’s going to be tough, but hopefully fun too. Come down for a show!”

Meanwhile, Turner  announced his new record in January this year , sharing it was about “survival and defiance, but also one with a sense of fun and self-deprecation.”

“19 years into my solo career, I’m still standing up and putting out some of my best work. It feels good.”

He also spoke to  NME  about the importance of going to gigs  after Covid-19, saying: “We’re trying to remind people that going to independent gigs is fun, and teaching the kids who came of age in 2020 or 2021 that this is a cool thing to do. My role in this is twofold – to shout about it whenever I can and be positive and say it’s a really fucking cool thing to go to indie gigs.

“Don’t fucking go to an arena gig where you get charged nine quid for a beer!”

Previously, the  MVT awarded Turner an Outstanding Achievement Award  for hosting 27 shows which were instrumental in directly enabling grassroots music venues to survive the  coronavirus  crisis, having raised nearly £300,000.
