3 days - Tambopata Amazon Jungle

Amazon, Incas & Titicaca - 13 days

This trip was amazing and included one of the best travel experiences of my life so far. Peru is a vibrant, exciting, fun and diverse place to visit. Im a solo traveller - plus gay man,and felt completely safe walking around solo in Lima, Cusco, and all the small villages and towns. I made great friends on this tour - including other solo travellers. This trip included all the highlights Peru has to offer, Machu Picchu, Cusco, Lamas and Alpacas, history, Local Food, amazing landscapes, Lake Titicaca and the floating island, cities, towns, villages, and of course The Amazon Jungle - my travel highlight. The Amazon accommodation was beautiful, located in the jungle. I would wake up to the sounds of Howler monkeys communicating outside my cabin each morning. Listening to the wildlife, while sitting on my fly screen covered balcony listening to the animals at sunrise and sunset - plus the fall of the rain in thenight time - was truly awesome. We took an amazing walk over suspension bridges elevated above the jungle canopy - with the tress filled with sloths and their babies. We did a boat night safari spotting the animals, and one day took a guided canoe ride into an inland lake - filled with fish, so our guide threw bits of food in the water and out came the piranhas to eat it - SOOO COOL. Machu Picchu is overwhelming. All those years seeing pictures and documentaries on Tv - to then be there and see it with your own eyes - such a overwhelming experience... and i mean that in the best way. The place is so much bigger in person. The train up and back is very comfortable with big windows - toilets and bar service in each cart. Great scenery rides heading up in the morning. Coming back - our cart turned into the party area and it was fun. There is quite a variety of altitude elevation in parts of Peru so you may at times feel dizzy - I was totally fine, I drank the Cocoa Tea supplied (helps with altitude sickness) everywhere we went and felt good - but others were sometimes feeling off. There are lots of Stairs and Slopped paths throughout Peru - so if you want 'buns of steel' by the end of the trip - you will get them visiting here. The tour itself was well paced - we would typically see sights in the morning and then return to our hotel to do our own thing for the rest of the day - great balance. Our Tour Leader John was wonderful - along with all our local guides in the different areas we visited - top notch. Really loved Peru and would recommend for everyone to go with ON THE GO.

I would highly recommend G Adventures. Unfortunately I became ill from altitude sickness. They were on top of it. A Doctor by the name of William. I called him Dr William was callled to my hotel. He took the best care of me. I was feeling better by the next day. I didn’t make the trek but Cesar my guide was always checking in with me to see how I was doing. They were amazing!

Reviews of Amazon Cruises

Absolutely loaded with activities, early, late, and in between.
Great tour meeting some awesome people, seeing beautiful sights, great food and unforgettable experiences
This trip was truly the trip of a lifetime. Jesus really submerges you into the Peruvian culture and the three days you’re there, you are nonstop with activities. Our guide was so knowledgeable and he made the trip. His family grew up in the rainforest so he was able to tell you the history about most things there (the families, the foods, the animals etc). We went during rainy season, and still had a wonderful time. If you’re looking for adventure, meeting wonderful people, and being in nature - this trip is for you!

WHY JUNGLE EXPERIENCES?

jungle experiences amazon river cruises

Connect with the Amazonian nature of Peru. Our more than 25 years of experience in the Amazon carries a unique connection with all life forms and cultures that shape a region that breathes life.

jungle experiences amazon river cruises

Travel to where our planet comes to life. Navigate the Amazon aboard our cruises, discover the largest river in the world and its surroundings, and explore the most virgin and unexplored areas of the planet.

jungle experiences amazon river cruises

Surf the Amazon waters in the safest way. Safety on board is one of our strong points. On board the Jungle Experiences cruises everything is designed for the well-being and safety of travelers.

jungle experiences amazon river cruises

Feel the bond between nature and humanity. Our guides know every inch of the Amazon jungle. Their more than 20 years of experience in the area make them the best people to walk hand in hand with as you discover the jungle and its native cultures.

SUSTAINABLE TOURISM

A shared commitment.

Tourism has tremendous transformative power over regions and cultures. Making this transformation positive and respectful for land and people who inhabit them is our responsibility and for this reason we are deeply committed to protecting the ecosystem and its people.

We help to protect the Amazon rainforest and, over the years, we have contributed to strengthening sustainable tourism in the region. This has translated to working closely with local communities, providing them with resources to improve their quality of life and teaching them how to conserve their surroundings.

We follow responsible ecotourism practices, including:

jungle experiences amazon river cruises

Raising consciousness and awareness about the importance of environmental conservation.  Our naturalist guides give environmental conservation talks to the children of the indigenous communities in order to raise awareness about the importance of conserving the environment and the natural resources that it makes available to us.

We carry out different projects such as:

– Encouraging communities to be a factor of change.

– 3R campaigns (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). Our paramedics and naturalists are in charge of visiting and carrying out these campaigns in local communities every two months.

jungle experiences amazon river cruises

Recycling.  In a bid to eradicate the use of plastics, we give all our passengers a reusable metal water bottle.

We carefully sort waste for recycling on our cruise ships (plastics, organic waste, cardboard, paper, batteries).

jungle experiences amazon river cruises

Economic dynamization of the area in collaboration with local communities.  Depending on local people as suppliers of artisan goods forms part of our social responsibility. By doing so, we promote the local economy and, therefore, local culture. We display their products aboard our boats.

We make a committed effort to employ local guides and  80% of our employees are from the community of Iquitos.

jungle experiences amazon river cruises

Waste Treatment & Eco-Friendly Products.  We have a wastewater treatment system on our cruise ships. All waste is treated with a smart sanitation system and storage tanks (domestic wastewater treatment plant – PETARD) that meet IMO and US Coast Guard standards. The result is 100% clean and sterile water that can be safely discharged into rivers. All the remaining waste is collected during the trip and recycled or responsibly disposed of upon disembarkation.

We only use biodegradable, non-toxic cleaning products (ECOLAB) on all our cruises.

jungle experiences amazon river cruises

Wildlife Conservation.  Support for the Manatee Rescue Center (CREA) in Iquitos, which rehabilitates orphaned Amazonian manatees.

Our skiffs use silencers to minimize the noise pollution that affects wildlife in the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.

It is strictly forbidden to touch wildlife during excursions.

jungle experiences amazon river cruises

Water and Energy Conservation.  We encourage all passengers to refresh their towels only when necessary. Also, We ask passengers not to waste energy.

OUR HISTORY

25 years of experience in the amazon region.

We have more than 25 years of experience in the Amazon region, designed unique experiences offering packages of cruises that will take you to navigate through the Amazon River and its tributaries. An unequaled place that offers the perfect balance between comfort and nature that invites you to know every detail of its culture, flora, fauna, history, gastronomy, adventure, among others.

A deep love for the Amazon unites us

All of the people that are part of Jungle Experiences share a deep love and respect for the Amazon, its landscapes, and its people. We also share a strong commitment to the professionalism and care of the experience of our passengers. The satisfaction of our clients depends on every one of our crew members. That is why all the staff on board is from the area and knows the landscapes and the communities perfectly. This makes the best people to walk hand in hand with as you experience the heart of the Amazon.

We had a wonderful time in the Amazon! We especially enjoyed the walk through the jungle and the night time cruise.

We really enjoyed meeting and visiting the local village. However, we felt that the dance by the women was too sexualized and made us uncomfortable.

Angela, Danny, Uber, Charlie, Jimmy were all outstanding and provided excellent service at all time.

Thank you so much ¡Gracias!

Conditions along the Amazon River in Peru divide into two seasons: a high water season from December through May and a low water season that lasts from June until November. Cruising the Amazon in either season promises rich rewards with breathtaking opportunities to view and photograph magnificent plant and animal life unlike anywhere else on earth.

If seeing the glorious Amazon rainforest at its lushest and getting up close to lots of birds and mammals (and enjoying slightly cooler temperatures) sounds most attractive, then December to May might be your best choice. If jungle hikes and spotting exotic migratory birds perched on trees between flights across Amazonia appeals most to you, while still having the chance to see capuchin monkeys, kinkajou, and other mammals, and going on great fishing expeditions, you might be happier choosing the warmer, low water season.

Weather in this region of the Amazon remains generally warm with some rainfall even during low water season. In fact, despite being the "rainy" season, during the high water months, the Amazon only gets about 10% more rain than in the low water season. So, as you choose the time of your cruise on the Amazon River (in either season), we suggest you consider the following three key points:

  • Some rain will fall in whichever season you choose. This is the Amazon Rainforest.
  • You will see spectacular Amazon wildlife, birds and plant life any time of year on the Amazon.
  • In either season, you will definitely see the Amazon River's rare pink dolphins.

The Amazon basin is as lush and green as it is because it gets an abundance of rain -- 12 feet a year on average. In a typical year, the Amazon River rainforest experiences 200 rainy days, which means that there will be days of rain even in the low water season. However it rarely rains all day. Rain most often falls in passing cloudbursts, which allow the vessel to coordinate excursions accordingly. When it does rain, you are provided sturdy ponchos to ensure you stay extremely comfortable so you can focus on the astonishing Amazon jungle scenery.

High Water Season on the Amazon: December Through May

Peru's rainy season runs from December through May, which is summer and autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. This is the relatively cooler and wetter season when the Amazon region receives more than half (60%) of its total annual rainfall. During the high water season, the average temperature is 86°F, only 12°F cooler than in the average low water season. Benefits of visiting Peru's Amazon at this time of year include the dramatic high water panorama. The Amazon Basin's rivers and streams rise about 23 feet higher than during the low water season. Aside from the striking visual effect, this also means that every river, creek, and lake is navigable. Thus, the ship's tenders are able to cruise further along the wildlife-rich waterways of Amazonia and bring guests up close to more plants and Amazon animals than during the low water season. Flooded waterways carry you significantly deeper by water into the Amazon jungle canopy, where the kaleidoscope of Amazon birds flutter about. Although the odds of sighting wildlife do not change significantly between the two seasons, you are likely to see more of some Amazon wildlife favorites such as monkeys, turtles, and caimans during the high water months. Enhanced navigation by water has a flip side -- areas to walk and trek become less accessible at this time of year. When you do find usable hiking trails, so will the mosquitoes that are more prevalent now than during the low water season. Fishing in the Amazon River is actually more limited during these high water months too, but you still have close to a 50/50 chance to reel in a memorable catch.

Low Water Season on the Amazon: June through November

Low water season in Amazonia coincides with winter in the Southern Hemisphere, from June to November. This is the warmer season on the Amazon River, with temperatures averaging about 98°F. Despite its name, the low water season still exhibits some heavy rains. A key difference between visiting the Amazon in low water season vs. high water season is you are able to access the jungle trails that get flooded from December to May, allowing you to follow your naturalists and local Amazonia guides deeper into the jungle by foot, and accompanied by fewer mosquitoes than during the high water season. Guests also tend to spot an even greater abundance of migratory birds in flight during the low water season. However, the trade-off at this time of year is that water levels on the Amazon River and its tributaries drop much lower from June to November, which means that many of the creeks and lakes that we visit by tender during the rainy season are now inaccessible. Lower water levels do offer a bonus: good fishing is 100% guaranteed, you even stand a fair chance to catch a piranha.

5 Best Places To Visit The Amazon Jungle To See Wildlife

View Of The Amazonia , Manu, Peru

One simply runs out of superlatives describing the rainforest of the Amazon Basin (the so-called “Amazon jungle” of popular conception). About the size of the conterminous United States, this biggest river basin in the world – drained by the most voluminous (and, arguably, the longest) river on Earth – hosts the largest swath of tropical rainforest anywhere and unexcelled terrestrial biodiversity. Covering some three million square miles in total, the vast biogeographic region known as Amazonia harbors 10% or more of the world’s described lifeforms, and there’s thought to be a staggering amount of biological richness here yet uncatalogued by science.

Visiting this ecological wonder, which covers a major chunk of Brazil as well as smaller portions of Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, and Ecuador, is a legitimate pilgrimage for nature enthusiasts of all stripes. From the dizzying variety of butterflies, snakes, and frogs to such large, ultra-charismatic beasts as jaguars, harpy eagles, manatees, and pink river dolphins (or botus), sightings of animals, large and small, invariably enliven an Amazonian river cruise or guided trek. Here, in no particular order, we’ve rounded up some of the best places to visit in the Amazon jungle for spotting some of its iconic wildlife!

Jau National Park, Brazil

Jau National Park, Brazil

1. Jau National Park (Brazil)

One of the biggest national parks in Amazonia at more than 5.6 million acres, Jau protects the entirety of the Rio Jau watershed, its borders running north to the Unini and Paunini rivers and south to the Caribinani River, and including the Jau’s confluence with the mighty Rio Negro (the blackwater river serving as one of the Amazon’s greatest tributaries). Established in 1980, Jau is now part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the enormous Central Amazon Conservation Complex , bigger than Switzerland and considered the world’s largest expanse of protected tropical rainforest.

Jau National Park’s mosaic of caminarana upland forest and scrub, terra firme rainforest, and extensive igapó flooded blackwater forest supports an impressive diversity of wildlife. The roster’s made up of some 120 mammal species, 455 birds, 150 reptiles, and more than 280 kinds of fish. Those who visit the park by boat (the only way to access it) can keep their eyes peeled for Amazonian manatees, pink river dolphins, giant otters, and no fewer than four species of caimans (including the great black caiman) in the flow. Bush and short-eared dogs, jaguars, giant anteaters, giant armadillos, and other terrestrial mammals reside here, while the canopy shakes and rustles with rare primates such as the white-bellied spider monkey and the golden-backed black uakari, rubbing shoulders with Amazon parrots and the kingly harpy eagle.

Jau’s about 125 miles northwest of Manaus, the main jumping-off point for river cruises to the park and host to such hotels and lodges as Juna Opera, Amazon Ecopark, and Anavilhanas Jungle Lodge.

2. Amanã Sustainable Development Reserve (Brazil)

Bordering Jau National Park and also part of the Central Amazon Conservation Complex, the Amaña Sustainable Development Reserve is a less well-known, roughly 5.8-million-acre parcel also open to river-bound exploration. Stretching between the Rio Japurá and the headwaters of the Unini and Paunini rivers, this reserve is notable for cradling one of the biggest Amazonian lakes, Lake Amanã. Terra firme forest blankets most of its acreage, though there are swaths of both várzea whitewater and igapó blackwater flooded communities.

Sharing much of the same wildlife lineup as Jau National Park, Amanã’s a good place to scan for the massive arapaima or pirarucu, one of the world’s heftiest freshwater fish, and supports perhaps the biggest population of Amazonian manatees anywhere. These gentle, whiskered hulks mass in the waters of Lake Amanã during the dry season, drifting their way during the wet season into the várzea backwaters of the adjoining Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve: another worthy destination within the Central Amazon Conservation Complex, and safeguarding what may be the largest expanse of whitewater flooded forest anywhere.

Manu National Park, Peru

Manu National Park, Peru

3. Manu National Park (Peru)

Another huge protected area that folds into an even bigger complex of preserves, Peru’s Manu National Park an absolutely world-class ecotourism destination and definitely a shortlist contender for the best place to see Amazon wildlife. The variety here is spectacular, on account of the 1.5-million-acre park drops from the puna grasslands and cloud forests of the Andean highlands down into the steaming Amazonian rainforests far below. The ecological spectrum is vast and the biodiversity head-spinning; the fact that far-flung Manu is also so pristine takes the place into the truly sublime territory.

Need more evidence why, as a wildlife enthusiast, you should put Manu on your bucket list? Well, just consider that, in 2016, the Tropical Ecology Assessment & Monitoring Network declared this Andean-Amazonian mashup of a park the all-out global hotspot for terrestrial species diversity .

A who’s-who of Amazon Basin wildlife populates the lowlands. You’ve got as decent a chance of spotting a jaguar here as anywhere in the Amazon, not to mention its smaller relatives the puma (which essentially ranges the breadth of the park), the ocelot, and the jaguarundi. Agile tayras forage in the trees and on the ground, capybaras lounge along the waterways, South American tapirs and giant armadillos thump over the leaf litter. The aquatic food chain comes topped by the black caiman and the green anaconda. Manu’s got a rich cast of primates, which—along with the numerous three-toed sloths—do their best to stay out of the sightlines of the harpy eagle. That’s only the most formidable of more than 1,000 species of birds – yes, 1,000-plus –  recorded in Manu, including a number of macaws (which congregate in brilliant spectacle at the park’s clay licks ) and the striking rufescent tiger-heron.

(Manu’s extra amazing from a wildlife-spotting perspective because you can also head up into the Andes to experience a completely different montane realm, soared over by Andean condors and host to the elusive spectacled bear, South America’s only ursid, as well as Peru’s national bird, the striking Andean cock-of-the-rock.)

Clouds Reflected Over The Pucate River, In The Pacaya Samiria Reserve, Peru

Clouds Reflected Over The Pucate River, In The Pacaya Samiria Reserve, Peru

4. Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve (Peru)

It may not have the international name recognition of Manu National Park, but Pacaya-Samiria (the biggest nature reserve in Peru) is another utterly spectacular ecotourism destination in the Peruvian Amazon. It’s an extensive, seasonally inundated forest between the Mariñon and Ucayali rivers—sometimes called “the jungle of mirrors”—supports jaguars, tapirs, and monkeys, with everything from pink river dolphins , manatees , and anacondas , to sailfin catfish, anhingas (“snakebirds”), and twist-neck and yellow-spotted river turtles sliding through the riverways, lagoons, and backwaters.

Many river cruises to Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve embark from the city of Iquitos, host to such fine accommodations as Jungle House, Casa Morey, Treehouse Lodge , Victoria Regia, and the DoubleTree Hilton Iquitos.

Magic Sunset In The Yasuni National Park, Ecuador

Magic Sunset In The Yasuni National Park, Ecuador

5. Yasuni National Park (Ecuador)

While Brazil and Peru account for larger shares of the basin, travelers will be rewarded for investigating the somewhat lower-profile Ecuadorian Amazon as well. Certainly, Yasuni holds its own with the other Amazonian parks and preserves. Indeed, this UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve may well rival Manu National Park as the most biologically diverse spot on the planet, a special landscape close to the crossroads of the Amazon and the Andes, and near the Equator to boot.

Blanketed mainly in primary tropical rainforest, Yasuni harbors more than 600 bird species, the better part of 400 kinds of fish, and 120 or so species of reptiles, plus an almost unbelievable plethora of vascular plants. Visitors have a good shot of seeing macaws , toucans, guans, and tinamous as well as kingfishers and jacanas along the water, plus such primates as titis, pygmy marmosets, Napo sakis, red howlers, squirrel monkeys, capuchins, and the endangered white-bellied spider monkey. Jaguars and pumas rest atop the rainforest food chain in Yasuni, with peccaries, brocket deer, tapir, and capybaras among the herbivore checklist.

Seek out such strategically positioned accommodations for wildlife safaris in the Ecuadorian Amazon as the La Selva and Mashpi lodges.

Other Worthy Wildlife-Watching Spots in the Amazon

Amazing as the above spots are, there are so many other productive wildlife-watching hubs in the gigantic Amazon Basin. These include the grand tropical wilderness of Brazil’s Tumucumaque Mountains National Park as well as Bolivia’s extraordinary Madidi National Park, which sweeps from high Andean mists down to the Upper Amazon rainforest and integrates with Peru’s Manu National Park in an extensive protected complex. Speaking of Peru, another celebrated Amazonian refuge is Tambopata National Reserve, perhaps best known for its density of macaw-thronged clay licks .

We’ll close by noting that, besides their wildlife credentials, any of the parks and preserves we’ve profiled here serve as some of the all-around best places to visit the Amazon rainforest in general. After all, the Amazon Basin’s chief appeal, even beyond the colorful and dramatic animals, is its sheer atmosphere: the sense and scale of its tropical wildness.
