Journey Keyboardist Jonathan Cain’s New Memoir: 10 Things We Learned

Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain first got the idea for his book Don’t Stop Believin’: The Man, the Band, and the Song That Inspired Generations ( in stores May 1st ) while traveling around the country on one of the band’s many long tours. “I’d be on the bus a lot with [ Journey bassist] Ross [Valory] and often I’d just start reminiscing about my life,” he says. “I’d talk about growing up in my Italian neighborhood and going to Dick Clark shows and listening to Wolfman Jack. I think it was Ross that said to me, ‘You should write a book.'”

Cain thought that was a splendid idea, though he didn’t quite realize how much work it would take. He began writing the book on his own laptop, starting with his earliest childhood memories, but eventually grew frustrated. He estimates that he re-wrote the first chapter alone eight different times. “I realized my grammar wasn’t so good,” he says. “I can write a song, but actually putting in the punctuation marks and knowing where to put the quotes? I had to learn all that stuff.”

He eventually was teamed up with novelist Travis Thrasher, who turned out to be an invaluable resource. “He re-organized it all and put things in their proper places and showed me where I was missing things,” says Cain. “It was about 500 pages when he got it and he said, ‘Let’s get to the essence of the thing.’ He showed me how to outline. I really owe him a lot.”

The book begins with a pivotal moment in his life: the day in 1987 that Steve Perry decided he no longer wanted to be in Journey. “In less than a year, my band would be over, my marriage would disintegrate, and, worst of all, my father would pass away,” he writes. “The year ahead would be one of the toughest I would ever have to endure.”

It then goes back to Cain’s childhood in Chicago, his early success as the keyboardist in the Babys, joining Journey in 1980, co-writing “Don’t Stop Believin'” with guitarist Neal Schon and singer Steve Perry, and the long, difficult road toward rebuilding Journey in the aftermath of Perry’s departure. It’s packed full of info that will be new even to hardcore Journey fans. Here are 10 things we learned from the book.

4. The phrase “Don’t Stop Believin'” is something that Cain’s dad said to him on the phone one night in the 1970s when he was frustrated with his life and career. He scribbled it down on the last page of his spiral notebook and found it when Journey was writing songs for 1981’s Escape. “I came up with a cool chord progression and and started humming the lyric ‘don’t stop-believin’-hold onto that feeling’ over the changes. I didn’t know what the other lyrics were yet, but I planned to show the guys the idea anyway.”

5. The infamous “Don’t Stop Believin'” lyric “born and raised in South Detroit” came to them very quickly. Initially, Steve Perry tried “born and raised in Detroit,” but Cain felt it needed another syllable to flesh it out. He suggested “South Detroit,” though Perry wondered aloud of such a place even existed. “Heck if I know,” Cain said. “If it sings well, I say let’s move on.” No such place exists because “South Detroit” is Canada.

Steve Perry broke the news to Cain and Schon that he was done with Journey after calling them to meet him near San Francisco’s Richardson Bay. “Guys, we’re done,” Cain remembers Perry saying. “We can’t get any bigger. If we keep going, we’re going to end up some classic rock nostalgia band. We’ll end up just being a memory – a shadow of what we used to be.” Cain was absolutely crushed. He’d been in the band a mere seven years. “Steve eventually walks away towards his car, leaving Neal and me near the shore,” he writes. “As we stare out at the water, I see the city by the bay. It feels like a stranger.”

Perry begged the band not to tour without him after a severe hip injury made it impossible for him to perform in support of the group’s 1996 comeback LP Trial By Fire. “Do whatever you guys need to do, but don’t call it Journey,” he said. “Call the band something else. Anything. Don’t fracture the stone. I don’t think I can come back if you break it.” Perry has held true to his word by not singing a note with them since they began touring with a new singer in 1998.

Cain had major doubts about hiring new Journey singer Arnel Pineda after Neal Schon discovered him on YouTube in 2007. “Initially, the thought of Arnel singing with us made me hesitant,” he writes, “wondering what our fans in places like Raleigh, North Carolina, and regions in the middle of Texas might think. I feared the twisted mentality that went, ‘That’s no Steve Perry – he’s Asian.'”

9. He randomly met his wife Paula White – who serves as Donald Trump’s spiritual advisor – on a Southwest Airlines flight to San Antonio, Texas. He had no idea who she was, but they started talking when a book dropped out of her bag and he picked it up for her. “The likelihood of Pastor Paula White being on a Southwest flight was highly improbable, just like Journey,” Cain writes. “She had needed to get a flight to San Antonio for some time, and a seat just happened to open up on our plane that very day.”

10. White played an instrumental role in Cain’s spiritual awakening, which has caused no small degree of conflict within Journey. “I told her how deep I used to feel in my relationship with Jesus,” he writes. “I told Paula I hadn’t been to church for many years, and how hungry I was for my faith to return.”

Out now is the new book "Livin' Just to Find Emotion: Journey and the Story of American Rock ," written by historian David Hamilton Golland and timed to the band's 50th anniversary celebration. The 363-page book offers a meticulously researched history of the band, with album-by-album analysis covering every Journey song and a document-sourced look at Journey 's corporate structure and legal machinations, particularly of the past few years when band members Ross Valory and Steve Smith were fired and the recent feuding between founding guitarist Neal Schon and keyboardist Jonathan Cain , that has since been resolved.

Golland, a professor at Monmouth University in New Jersey whose specialty is African American History, became a Journey fan when he was young, after hearing "Don't Stop Believe in'" on the radio. He tells us that researching and writing the book as a pandemic project enhanced his view of the group:

"I definitely came to appreciate the music more because I went in-depth into every single song. This was a really fun project, frankly, a lot less time in archives and a lot more time with headphones on, but also thinking about it from a critical standpoint rather than simply, 'Oh, I love this' or 'Oh, I only like this' or 'OK, I can skip this .'" Golland has previously written books about affirmative action and civil rights and is editor of the Arthur Fletcher Papers at Washburn University.

Journey is currently on tour continuing its 50th anniversary, with Toto opening. The group begins a summer stadium tour with Def Leppard on July 6 in St. Louis. The Steve Miller Band, Heart and Cheap Trick will alternate opening spots on that.

Journey's latest album "Freedom," came out during 2022.

Mandisa remembered. Fans, music industry, friends pay tribute to 47-year-old singer

Grammy-award winning musician and "American Idol" alum Mandisa was found dead at her Nashville home on Thursday.

The 47-year-old Christian singer dazzled audiences when she hit the stage of "American Idol" in 2005 and made it through to the final nine. From there she released her debut album, but dealt with pain from the loss of a beloved friend and having a personal crisis of faith. Her journey through heartache and depression to finding her faith again inspired many that were going through similar situations.

"Mandisa was a voice of encouragement and truth to people facing life’s challenges all around the world," was written on an Instagram post announcing Mandisa's death.

Since the news of her death, family, fans and friends in and out of the music industry, have paid tribute to the singer.

What happened to Mandisa?

On Friday, The Media Collective, Mandisa's rep, issued this statement confirming her death, but did not disclose how the songstress died.

"We can confirm that yesterday Mandisa was found in her home deceased. At this time we do not know the cause of death or any further details. We ask for your prayers for her family and close-knit circle of friends during this incredibly difficult time."

Mandisa's story and journey to 'Overcome' touched many

Mandisa crisis of faith was an inspiration not only for an album, but inspired others who were going though hardship. Fans shared their stories on the Instagram post announcing her death.

"I’m devastated 💔💔💔 Overcomer help me healed when I loss my daughter at 16. She gave hope even when she didn’t have any to give herself. Mandisa is truly one of God’s Devine. I hope she finally has the peace she struggled so long to find. We have truly really loss one of God’s truest and purest creatures… I love you now and forever on Mandisa. God speed on your journey to heaven….," wrote user keishacraftsmith.

Other's shared how her music and writing helped them through some of the toughest times in their lives. Actress Candace Cameron Bure shared broken heart emojis under the post, while Christian rap artist Wande offered condolences.

Fellow Christian musician and friend Colton Dixon, shared memories of being on the road with Mendisa and Toby Mac.

"Mandisa is the sweetest, kindest soul that  @anniedixon__  and I have met on the road. After hearing she went to be with the Jesus last night I was reflecting this morning on the times we had together," Dixon wrote.

Singer and songwriter Matthew West paid tribute to his longtime friend and collaborator with lyrics from their song "Only the World", stating that they "hit differently" now that Mandisa was gone.

"I am so incredibly saddened to hear about the loss of my friend Mandisa. I will always cherish the memories of times we spent together hosting award shows, going on tour, and most of all helping her tell her story in the songwriting room," West also wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts also paid tribute to the late singer.

"My heart is heavy hearing about Mandisa. Incredibly blessed that she was there my first day back on ⁦ @GMA ⁩ following my long medical leave. Her beautiful music & spirit lifted me and countless others," Roberts wrote on X.

Fellow musician Don Moen provided a statement to The Tennessean, saying Mandisa was not only a powerhouse of a talent, but that she also possessed a genuinely kind spirit.

"We ministered together several times, she sang background vocals on my album 'Thank You Lord' and joined me on several tours," the statement read. "On one particular tour, notes kept appearing in everyone's bunk on the bus or in their instrument cases. These were encouraging messages like: 'You are blessed and highly favored,' or 'You're such a blessing on this tour.' Only at the end of the tour did we discover it had been Mandisa. Whether behind the scenes or center stage, her presence always brought joy and hope.

Where was Mandisa from?

Mandisa was born in California, but her home was in Tennessee.

She graduated Fisk University in Nashville in 2000 and was a member of the famed Fisk University Jubilee singers. She called Tennessee home after her graduation, through her "American Idol" tenure, a Grammy win, multiple albums and until her death on Thursday.
