Vicky Gill is the Wardrobe Lead for Strictly Come Dancing, amongst many other things! We first met when I appeared on the show in 2013. She is passionate about merging fashion and performance. I can vouch for the fact that she is supremely talented at making costumes that people can dance in - and her sparkly leotards are still part of my onstage essentials today. But as a mum of three she was also great at sharing glimpses of normal family life with me, which you very much appreciate when you are on the Strictly juggernaut!

When we spoke, Vicky had just finished Dancing on Ice and was about to start work on the Girls Aloud tour.  She is a very busy woman.

Vicky and her husband are from Newcastle originally but live in London, and as their family support network is far away, she describes their situation as ‘us against the world’.  She is hoping her children - now in their teens and beyond - don’t choose the creative careers which she and her husband have (between you and me, I don’t think that’s working so far!) but she says she just wants them to feel happy in their skin.  

Vicky prides herself on being a problem-solver - both in her working life and in her parenting.  And sometimes the worlds have collided - as when she was working with Girls Aloud just after her daughter was born, when she found that nappy cream comes in handy for getting boob tape off!

Michelle Ogundehin is best known as the head judge of Interior Designs Masterclass on BBC 1. It’s a programme I am utterly addicted to, and I was therefore delighted to have been asked to join as a guest judge for semi finals week, this week (TX 23/4/24). I have been a fan of Michelle’s expert eye when it comes to interiors for a long time, having devoured every issue of Elle Decoration published during her time as editor in chief from 2004-2017. I love her approach to homes and how they make you feel, always taking into account the link between our environment and how it affects our mental health. 

Off-screen, Michelle is a devoted single mum to her 10 year old son. She became a mum later in life, after years of trying, and her journey included IVF and four miscarriages. She says her son is the best thing that has ever happened to her. 

We talked about her worries about becoming a mum due to her own mother not being maternal or loving to her. 

She told me how she has recently been ‘album-ing’ her life and also that she believes that what surrounds us at home affects us. 

I finally tested her boundaries when I mischievously suggested she should let her little boy draw on his bedroom walls, just as my mum let me!

Heather James is best known to us all as the mum of Deborah James, the beautiful bowelbabe, who I interviewed for Spinning Plates 3 years ago. That was the year before her premature death at the age of 40, from bowel cancer.

Heather explained how she is grieving but working. Not only working in her day job as a gymnastics teacher, but also doing everything that Deborah would have continued with - including campaigning to highlight April as Bowel Cancer Awareness month.

Deborah spent the last weeks of her life at her mum and dad’s house in the summer of 2022 surrounded by her family. Heather and her husband Alistair found themselves looking after Deborah and, to everyone’s surprise, hosting Prince William when he came to their garden to make Deborah a Dame. Heather talked about caring for Deborah when she came home to die, but said Deborah’s zest for life - and campaigning - meant that far from going quiet, it was a busy time of fun, outings, a book, a rose and of course, a Damehood.

It struck me that Heather is everything you would hope to be, as a mum in such a dreadful circumstance.

She is planning to life life to the full, as Deborah wanted her to. And we spoke, just before her son’s wedding where the entire family were planning to party and celebrate just as Deborah would have done if she were still here. And speaking as someone who witnessed her 40th birthday party in full swing, boy, did Deborah know how to party!

New podcast series klaxon!! Spinning Plates is back, and we kick off the the new series with a friend of mine :-) Natasha Bedingfield is a New Zealand-UK singer and songwriter who started out in the business at a similar time to me.  Another shared link is that we are both currently on a new adventure with songs we brought out originally in our early 20s! How’s that for a coincidence?  We’ve each been on an unexpected and exciting journey with our old songs… both because of recent films.  The film ‘Anyone but You’ featured Natasha’s 'Unwritten’ which originally charted nearly 20 years ago. 

Natasha talked about her place in her own family’s politics, where her brother Daniel was the first to get into the music industry. Natasha had to fight to pursue her music career; in her family’s eyes, that 'place’ had already been taken by her sibling! (Sidenote: Daniel’s debut single 'Gotta Get Thru This’ kept Murder off the top spot in the charts 22 years ago - not that I’m holding a grudge or anything, Daniel!)

Natasha has a little boy who is now 6.  When he was 2, he was taken seriously ill with a spontaneous brain abscess He had to have two surgeries and was in hospital for 5 weeks.  Thankfully there was a cure and he is fully recovered, but the time he was in hospital was obviously an extremely difficult period for Natasha and her husband. Natasha remembers having to perform a gig while her son was still in hospital. She shared how terribly difficult that was, and how in a room full of small talk she would suddenly blurt out 'My son’s in hospital!’.

On a lighter note Natasha and I talked about how having a baby changed our singing range - for the better!  And we agreed that we are both really enjoying the new ride with our old songs from the early 2000s. It was such a pleasure to hang out with Natasha - she’s such a positive person - and here’s to another series of Spinning Plates!

Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s Christmas Kitchen Disco review – the festive season starts here

City Hall, Newcastle upon Tyne With pantomime boos, bad cracker jokes and joyous Christmas hits, Ellis-Bextor channels pure showbiz in this enjoyably merry spectacle

E very Friday night during the first Covid-19 lockdown, Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s Kitchen Disco helped bring the nation back together with streamed home live performances, sequinned dresses and a disco ball. Now, the Christmas Kitchen Disco takes that spirit on the road with festive bells on. The singer, bassist husband Richard Jones and the band all wear Santa hats; there are Christmas trees on stage and the show kicks off with a sparkly version of Leroy Anderson and His Pops’ seasonal 1948 classic Sleigh Ride.

However, tragedy has struck. The singer reveals that Bianca, the large plastic horse that she was due to sit atop on stage, was “too big to get through the entrance, so she’s stuck outside”. Cue pantomime boos. It’s that kind of night, with glittery outfits, bad cracker jokes and occasionally a spinning wheel to dictate the setlist. “Oh,” she sighs when it lands on Won’t Change You, from her second album, explaining that it has “really bad lyrics in the second verse”. Accordingly, the line about her underwear is met with riotous cheering.

Ellis-Bextor never seemed entirely comfortable as the styled teen fronting indie band Theaudience, but has truly found herself as an all-smiling, high-kicking, self-deprecating showbiz entertainer. The 90-minute setlist stomps from her own postmodern disco bangers – Groovejet (If This Ain’t Love), Murder on the Dancefloor, or a singalong Get Over You – to festive bankers such as Wham!’s Last Christmas or the Waitresses’ Christmas Wrapping.

Her cheery voice and elevating eyebrow are perfect for Brenda Lee’s Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree. A joyous stomp through Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas Is You leaves security staff battling to stop women in glittery dresses from dancing in the aisles. When the singer suddenly reappears with violinists on the balcony, shushes the crowd and sings Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas without a microphone, there are even shades of Vera Lynn. We’re not even out of November, but the festivities start here.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor announces ‘Christmas Kitchen Disco’ tour for 2023

Sophie Ellis-Bextor has announced her ‘Christmas Kitchen Disco’ tour for 2023.

The 2023 tour kicks off in Bexhill, before heading all around the country including a date at the London Eventim Apollo. It will feature hits from throughout Sophie’s career, as well as some very festive classics, all in Sophie’s own seasonal disco style.

Earlier this year, Sophie brought her ‘Kitchen Disco’ Instagram phenomenon to the stage for the first time to huge success, including a sold-out finale at the London Palladium. 

The London Palladium show was recently released as a 24-track live album: ‘Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s Kitchen Disco: Live at the London Palladium’. The setlist featured disco classics such as,  ‘ All Night Long’ and ‘ Dancing Queen’, as well as Sophie’s own floor-filling hits including ‘Murder on the Dancefloor’, ‘Groovejet (If This Ain’t Love)’, ‘Take Me Home (A Girl Like Me)’, and her most recent Radio 2 A-listed single,  ‘ Hypnotized’ featuring Wuh Oh.

Sophie will also be releasing her seventh studio album in 2023. Fans who pre-order the limited edition signed CD format from her Official Store will get exclusive pre-sale access to tickets from the 5th December.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor cheered up many with her kitchen discos during lockdown and now she's taking the show on the road with a tour as well as a new album.

The singer announced the 'Kitchen Disco' 2021 eight-date tour and record on Instagram as the mother-of-five joked it wasn't going to be another pregnancy announcement.

"I have news! No, not another baby it’s a Kitchen Disco UK tour! And an album, Songs From The Kitchen Disco! It has all my singles in one place, plus some covers," the 41-year-old wrote.

Next May will see the Murder on the Dancefloor hitmaker take to the stage in Glashow, Birmingham, Southend, London, Bexhill, Guildford, Manchester and Leeds.

Presale tickets are currently available for those who preorder the album via her website , with general release taking place on Friday 17 July at 10am via Ticketmaster .

Ellis-Bextor performed from her home weekly for 10 weeks during the beginning of the UK's lockdown, broadcasting it to Instagram Live with help from her husband Richard Jones, bassist of The Feeling.

The couple's five sons regularly appeared in the background as Ellis-Bextor danced around their London home. They are parents to Sonny, 16, Kit, 11, Ray, eight, Jesse, five, and one-year-old Mickey.

On Tuesday, Ellis-Bextor shared she would be doing a one-off kitchen disco party to celebrate the summer holidays.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s Christmas Kitchen Disco, Eventim Apollo, review: The singer has found her calling

Now more than 20 years on from her first flourish of chart success, ellis-bextor has found her niche as an expert curator of good times.

“It felt borderline punk rock to start this tour in November,” said Sophie Ellis-Bextor of the all-singing, all-dancing Christmas adaptation of her Kitchen Disco, the lockdown glitterball party sensation she live-streamed on Instagram during the depths of the pandemic.

But it’s December now, so everything about this seamlessly pitched 90-minute festive bonanza made perfect sense: the band in Santa hats; the tinsel around the microphone stand; the saxophone player dressed as an elf; the Christmas trees; even, to fittingly pantomime groans, the Christmas cracker-style gags. “What did Oppenheimer get Barbie for Christmas? Ken-etic energy!”

After an ill-suited stint in 90s indie band Theaudience and now more than 20 years on from her first flourish of chart success, Ellis-Bextor has found her calling as an expert curator of good times.

On “very much home turf” (she went to school down the road in Hammersmith), she skilfully mixed homespun comfiness – both her husband, Richard Jones of The Feeling, and brother are in the band; she dedicated one song to her recently engaged sister; her young kids joined her for the deathless disco-banger “Murder on the Dancefloor” via an illuminated reindeer sledge – with Christmas fun, and no little camp.

She started the evening’s opener, a cover of Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride”, famously covered by The Ronettes, sat atop a huge white horse with an Aladdin Sane -style lightning bolt cross its face.

During an acoustic “Lost in the Sunshine” a silver glittery cocktail bar was wheeled on so she could drink a Negroni. Some tracks were chosen by Ellis-Bextor spinning a multi-coloured wheel of fortune – actually an old Elvis Costello trick – stacked with 24 songs on it.

She seemed faintly underwhelmed when her 2007 track “Catch You”, the rockiest song in the set, came up (“a nice little pop song about stalking”), but was much happier later (as were the crowd) when the wheel threw up Lionel Ritchie’s “All Night Long (All Night)”, which the band gave a blaring brass climax.

As expected, her song curation was very well judged. The show’s mix of Christmas , disco, pop, dance, original material and covers could have felt slightly disjointed. But the parts came together joyfully, like a selection box of fun.

After 32 years, Take That still bring the house down

Led by an effervescent, swirling, two-stepping, hi-kicking Ellis-Bextor, the Christmas staples – faithful but fun takes on the likes of Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” and Shakin’ Stevens’ “Merry Christmas Everyone” – were peppered among pop standards (a version of “Like a Prayer” that bettered what Madonna could muster on her recent tour) and her own dance-pop stompers like “Get Over You”.

Segueing Ibiza classic number one smash “Groovejet (If This Ain’t Love)” into The Waitresses’ “Christmas Wrapping” and back again was a particularly clever touch.

By the encore, the night was as Christmas as mince pies. The Feeling frontman Dan Gillespie Sells joined for a heartfelt take on “Fairytale of New York” (“for Shane and Kirsty”).

Ellis-Bextor played the Glockenspiel opening to Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas is You”, by which point the sparkly, festive crowd had long been dancing in the aisles.

Unexpectedly, they were joined by Ellis-Bextor, who ended the night by singing “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” unamplified from the balcony, joined by violins.

It was a lovely end to the most festive of shows.

The  Bittersweet  hitmaker began her Kitchen Disco livestream series during the first lockdown in March 2020 and continued the jaunt with 20 shows live from her home. 

Following the UK Tour, she’ll take the show across Europe over the summer.

Following on from the success of her 2022 Kitchen Disco Tour, in which she brought her lockdown online sensation from her kitchen to sold-out stages across the country, Sophie Ellis-Bextor has announced a very special Christmas Kitchen Disco tour for 2023.

Coming to The Bridgewater Hall in November, the 2023 tour will feature hits from throughout Sophie’s career, as well as some very festive classics, all in Sophie’s own seasonal disco style.

The Arts Desk commented that Sophie’s Kitchen Disco live show ‘… truly felt like you were dancing your cares away with some friends’ whilst the Mail on Sunday called it ‘warm and relatable’. The Daily Telegraph proclaimed that it was   “An unabashedly feelgood echo of lockdown”.

Australia concerts in 2024: here’s a list of shows and tours coming up

Artists touring Down Under in 2024 include Coldplay, Pearl Jam, Hozier, Laufey, aespa, IVE and more

Fresh out of a pandemic, Australia’s 2023 touring calendar was one of the busiest in recent memory, as artists of all stripes took centrestage everywhere from stadium shows to intimate local gigs. With a starry schedule that included the likes of Post Malone , Red Hot Chili Peppers , and Mötley Crüe , it’ll be tricky for 2024’s schedule to outdo its predecessor – and yet, thanks to the likes of Taylor Swift , Blink-182 and Pink , plus Coldplay, Pearl Jam and SZA, it’s poised to do just that.

From debut headline shows for breakout artists to bustling festival sideshow programs, there’s something for everyone to enjoy as a stellar batch of musicians make their way Down Under in 2024. Read on for NME’s roundup of all the biggest concerts and tours coming to Australia this year.

James Taylor: An Evening with James Taylor & His All-Star Band When: April 12 – April 28 Find tickets and more info here

If there was ever a festival made for James Taylor & His All-Star Band at this juncture of his 50-year career, it’s Day on the Green . The singer will perform at wineries in Queensland (Sirromet Wines in Mount Cotton), and New South Wales (Bimbadgen in the Hunter Valley, and Centennial Vineyards in Bowral) across April 2024. Taylor will be accompanied by Aussie pair Josh Pyke and Ella Hooper .

Taylor is also playing his own headline shows. After selling out dates in Perth, Melbourne and Sydney, new shows have been added in those cities. A Live Nation pre-sale begins February 9 while general on-sale starts February 12.

After a new mixtape, charting singles and landmark Boiler Room set, drum’n’bass lifers Chase & Status celebrated a huge 2023. This year, the British duo will bring the party to Australia and New Zealand on a sold-out co-headlining tour with Australia’s very own Luude. They’re notably playing RAC Arena in Perth, on top of Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane.

Fresh off winning three Grammys, SZA has announced a tour of Australia and New Zealand this April. The ‘Kill Bill’ singer will be performing two shows in New Zealand and eight across Australia, with shows confirmed for Auckland, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.

Beth Orton When: April 24 – April 30 Find tickets and more info

Initially slated to appear in Australia in November 2023, Beth Orton  rescheduled her Australian tour to April 2024 and added an extra show in Tasmania. The folk musician will now embark on a four-date run with performances in Melbourne, Hobart, Sydney and Brisbane from April 24 to April 30, with tickets for the original cities still valid for the rescheduled dates. Nick Cave (solo) When: April 25 – May 7 Find tickets and more info

The legendary Nick Cave embarks on a solo tour of Australia (read: without the Bad Seeds) this April, playing two shows in Melbourne and five in Sydney. Radiohead’s Colin Greenwood will be on bass duties for these shows at Plenary Melbourne and State Theatre Sydney, which are all sold out.

The Dandy Warhols When: April 25 – May 1 Find tickets and more info

The Dandy Warhols will make their return to Australia in April 2024 armed with their new album ‘Rockmaker’. So far, they’ve scheduled dates in Brisbane , Adelaide, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. Elephant Gym When: April 26 – April 28 Find more info and tickets here

Elephant Gym isn’t the result of a random band name generator; “elephant” refers to the Taiwanese math rock band’s bass-led grooves, while “Gym” denotes the “agility” of their rhythm. The trio will perform their technical and idiosyncratic instrumentals at three shows on the Australian east coast for the first time this April, supporting sleepmakeswaves.

6LACK: Since I Have A Lover Tour When: April 26 – May 1 Find tickets and more info

R&B favourite 6LACK (pronounced ‘black’) will return to Australia in April to tour his new album, ‘Since I Have A Lover’. The four-date jaunt will take him to Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth.

Niall Horan: ‘The Show’ Live On Tour When: April 26 – May 4 Find tickets and more info

Niall Horan will take ‘The Show’ on the road down under in 2024. The ex- One Direction member’s world tour comes in support of his third solo album ‘The Show’ , out June 9. For the Australian leg, he’ll perform arena shows in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.

Groovin The Moo sideshows When: April 29 – May 11 Find tickets and more info

Sadly, Groovin The Moo is no longer going ahead this year – but many of the artists who would have played the touring festival will still be forging ahead with their own Australian headline shows. Singer-songwriter Claire Rosinkranz, Wu-Tang Clan legend GZA (performing a set dubbed ‘Liquid Swords Live’) and Stephen Sanchez will all perform headline shows in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth.

Jessie Reyez When: April 30 – May 7 Find tickets and more info

Jessie Reyez will tour Australia for the first time in autumn, playing three shows along the east coast. The Canadian R&B singer will bring cuts from 2020 debut ‘Before Love Came to Kill Us’ and 2022 follow-up ‘Yessie’ to Sydney’s Enmore Theatre on April 30, before shows at the Forum in Melbourne and the Tivoli in Brisbane. Nothing But Thieves: Welcome To The DCC World Tour When: April 30 – May 7 Find tickets and more info

Nothing But Thieves cleaned up on a sold-out tour of Australia last year – and they’re back for more. The UK alt-rockers have announced the second Aussie leg of their Dead Club City World tour, which will kick off at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion on April 30, continue on to Brisbane and Melbourne, and wrap up at Hindley Street Music Hall in Adelaide on May 7.

Mahalia: In Real Life When: April 30 – May 8 Find tickets and more info

UK R&B artist Mahalia has booked a five-date tour of Australia, her biggest yet and her first time back down under since 2020. Audiences in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane should get ready for smooth tunes off her 2023 album ‘IRL’ .

Jonas Brothers: Five Albums. One Night. Tour When: May 1 – 9 Find tickets and more info

Joe , Nick and Kevin Jonas – the Jonas Brothers – play Australia for the first time between May 1 and May 9 as part of their massive Five Albums. One Night. Tour. The tour will see the brothers perform hits from all five of their albums across one night, including fan favourites.

UK prog metal outfit Tesseract are set to make the highly anticipated return to Australia in May 2024, marking their first shows Down Under since 2018. Between May 2 and May 9, the band will perform in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

With 2023 album ‘War of Being’ and songs from 2021’s ‘Portals’ not played in Australia yet, Tesseract are set to bring with them a fresh bounty of new music to Australia.

UK indie rockers The Vaccines and Everything Everything are banding together for a co-headline tour of Australia, their first time back in the country since 2019 and 2018 respectively. Embrace the indie disco in May when they head to Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane and finally Sydney.

UK garage has been making a steady comeback, and DJ/producer Sammy Virji is one of its frontrunners. He’s set to come back to Australia for his biggest headline tour of the country yet. Virji will kick off his tour at Metro City in Perth on May 10, before heading through Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and finishing at The Roundhouse in Sydney May 18.

Melissa Etheridge: I’m Not Broken Tour When: May 10 – May 17 Find tickets and more info here

Melissa Etheridge is bringing her trailblazing heartland rock to Australian shores for the first time in five years in May 2024. The ‘I’m Not Broken’ tour kicks off in Perth on May 10, before heading through Adelaide, Melbourne and finishing up in Sydney on May 17. Expect to hear a blend of the songwriter’s greatest hits as heard on her latest live album ‘Beautiful Day’.

Fresh off the release of latest album ‘Ben’, Macklemore will embark on an Australian tour next May. The hip-hop artist will perform at Hordern Pavillion in Sydney on May 11-12, before taking to Melbourne’s John Cain Arena and Brisbane’s Riverstage on May 15 and May 17, respectively. In their first shows here since 2016, Sleater-Kinney are embarking on a theatre tour of Australia. Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein will play four headline shows down under in support of their latest album, ‘Little Rope’ , in what the latter has called a “homecoming” of sorts.

“For all intents and purposes, Sleater-Kinney got its start in Australia,” Brownstein said in a statement. “We recorded our first album and played our first ever shows there. Because of that, Australia feels like one of the band’s spiritual homes, and returning there always feels like a homecoming, a reunion.”

Jungle have unleashed more dancey goodness with their latest album, ‘Volcano’. Get ready to boogie in May when they tour Australia. The entire run, comprising the Hordern Pavilion in Sydney, Festival Hall in Melbourne, and Fortitude Music Hall in Brissy, is sold out.

Botch When: May 17 – 25 Find tickets and more info

Cult-favourite mathcore/hardcore/metal band Botch from Tacoma, Washington reunited last year more than two decades after their split – and now they’re embarking on their first-ever Aussie tour. The jaunt will include two dates in Melbourne and Sydney apiece as well as shows in Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane.

Guitarist David Knudson has promised Botch will go all out: “We don’t want to half-ass it…we want to be fucking tight as we ever were, if not tighter. We don’t want to disappoint a fan that’s never seen us live. So you know, it’s all in or nothing.”

Peter Hook & The Light When: May 21 – 28 Find tickets and more info

Peter Hook , the legendary bassist and co-founder of Joy Division and New Order is set to return to Australia in May 2024, just two years after his last tour of the country in 2022. For the upcoming tour, Hook will perform the New Order and Joy Division substance compilations live, giving fans a chance to once again revel in both bands’ music.

The Snuts When: May 23 – May 26 Find tickets and more info

Scottish indie rockers The Snuts will return for their second Australian tour in as many years, following their debut run of headline shows in 2023. With third studio album ‘Millennials’ in tow, the band will kick off their 2024 tour with a show at Melbourne’s Northcote Theatre. They’ll play Sydney’s Metro Theatre on May 25, before a show at the Triffid in Brisbane the following evening. Find tickets here .

Tom Grennan When: May 29 – May 30 Find tickets and more info

Tom Grennan will duck over to Australia for a pair of headline shows this year, following a debut visit in 2022. The English singer-songwriter will play Sydney’s Metro Theatre and 170 Russell in Melbourne on May 29 and 30 respectively.

It’s been 12 years since Sky Ferreira released her debut ‘Night Time, My Time’, and her mystique has only grown in the interim: Ferriera has explored the silver screen, modelling, and long teased the release of a second album ‘Masochism’ . She’ll play two rare headline shows at bespoke Melbourne and Sydney festivals RISING and Vivid LIVE this June – a decade after her last Australian performance.

Buzzy London trio Bar Italia are proteges of Dean Blunt, and have emerged from relative anonymity in the last few years with two albums of sinister post-punk. They’ll tour Australia for the first time in June, playing at Oxford Art Factory in Sydney and Brisbane’s Black Bear Lodge before a matinee show in Melbourne as part of RISING festival.

Deerhoof: Miracle Level Tour When: June 12 – June 16 Find tickets and more info

Indie vets Deerhoof return to Australia this June for the Miracle Level Tour, in support of their 19th (!) album of the same name. They’ll play five cities in five days, kicking off in Melbourne and then heading to Sydney for Vivid before Brisbane, Adelaide and finally Perth.

LANY – the pop duo of Paul Klein and Jake Goss – will return to Australia in mid-2024. After playing small, intimate shows down under in August 2023, they’ll go bigger in this national tour at venues including the Hordern Pavilion and Margaret Court Arena. See info on dates and tickets here.

A year after breaking out with TikTok hit ‘Ceilings’, Lizzy McAlpine has released her major-label debut, the album ‘Older’. To celebrate, she’ll stage her debut headline shows in Australia with four stops across Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.

Conan Gray is the archetypal Gen Z popstar, honing his craft as a teenage YouTube vlogger before unleashing his multimodal talent as a singer. Gray will play songs from his upcoming third album ‘Found Heaven’ in some of the biggest rooms in the country this July, as well as a headline spot at Adelaide’s Spin Off Festival on July 19.

Girl In Red: Doing It Again: Asia/Oceania Tour When: July 11 – July 21 Find tickets and more info

She’s doing it again: Marie Ulven aka Girl In Red returns to Australia after selling out her headline tour here last year. It’s been more than a decade since Tenacious D toured Australia, but that all changes in July. Jack Black and Kyle Gass will play their first shows in the country since 2013, performing six arena dates.

In what will be their first trip Down Under since 2017, Iron Maiden are poised to bring The Future Past tour to stadiums in Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne next September.

Outloud Music Festival just got a bit bigger. Kesha and Adam Lambert will headline West Hollywood Pride’s free Friday night event on May 31, joining a star-studded list of performers including Kylie Minogue and Janelle Monáe.

Friday night will also include appearances from RuPaul’s Drag Race alums, including Monét x Change, and a seeming lip-sync battle performance between Season Six’s Laganja Estranja and Season 16’s Morphine Love Dion. Le Corbusier’s triumphant return to Moscow

The largest Le Corbusier exhibition in a quarter of a century celebrates the modernist architect’s life and his connection with the city.

Given his affinity with Moscow, it is perhaps surprising that the city had never hosted a major examination of Le Corbusier’s work until now. However, the Pushkin Museum and the Le Corbusier Fund have redressed that discrepancy with the comprehensive exhibition “Secrets of Creation: Between Art and Architecture,” which runs until November 18.

Presenting over 400 exhibits, the exhibition charts Le Corbusier’s development from the young man eagerly sketching buildings on a trip around Europe, to his later years as a prolific and influential architect.

The exhibition brings together the different facets of his talent, showing his publications, artwork and furniture design alongside photographs, models and blueprints of his buildings.

Irina Antonova, director of the Pushkin Museum, said, “It was important for us to also exhibit his art. People know Le Corbusier the architect, but what is less well know is that he was also an artist. Seeing his art and architecture together gives us an insight into his mind and his thought-processes.”

What becomes obvious to visitors of the exhibition is that Le Corbusier was a man driven by a single-minded vision of how form and lines should interact, a vision he was able to express across multiple genres.

The upper wings of the Pushkin Museum are separated by the central stairs and two long balconies. The organizers have exploited this space, allowing comparison of Le Corbusier’s different art forms. On one side there are large paintings in the Purist style he adapted from Cubism, while on the other wall there are panoramic photographs of his famous buildings.

Le Corbusier was a theorist, producing many pamphlets and manifestos which outlined his view that rigorous urban planning could make society more productive and raise the average standard of living.

It was his affinity with constructivism, and its accompanying vision of the way architecture could shape society, which drew him to visit the Soviet Union, where, as he saw it, there existed a “nation that is being organized in accordance with its new spirit.”

The exhibition’s curator Jean-Louis Cohen explains that Le Corbusier saw Moscow as “somewhere he could experiment.” Indeed, when the architect was commissioned to construct the famous Tsentrosoyuz Building, he responded by producing a plan for the entire city, based on his concept of geometric symmetry.

Falling foul of the political climate

He had misread the Soviet appetite for experimentation, and as Cohen relates in his book Le Corbusier, 1887-1965, drew stinging attacks from the likes of El Lissitsky, who called his design “a city on paper, extraneous to living nature, located in a desert through which not even a river must be allowed to pass (since a curve would contradict the style).”

Not to be deterred, Le Corbusier returned to Moscow in 1932 and entered the famous Palace of the Soviets competition, a skyscraper that was planned to be the tallest building in the world.

This time he fell foul of the changing political climate, as Stalin’s growing suspicion of the avant-garde led to the endorsement of neo-classical designs for the construction, which was ultimately never built due to the Second World War.

Situated opposite the proposed site for the Palace of the Soviets, the exhibition offers a tantalizing vision of what might have been, presenting scale models alongside Le Corbusier’s plans, and generating the feeling of an un-built masterpiece.

Despite Le Corbusier’s fluctuating fortunes in Soviet society, there was one architect who never wavered in his support . Constructivist luminary Alexander Vesnin declared that the Tsentrosoyuz building was the "the best building to arise in Moscow for over a century.”

The exhibition sheds light on their professional and personal relationship, showing sketches and letters they exchanged. In a radical break from the abstract nature of most of Le Corbusier’s art, this corner of the exhibition highlights the sometimes volatile architect’s softer side, as shown through nude sketches and classical still-life paintings he sent to Vesnin.

“He was a complex person” says Cohen. “It’s important to show his difficult elements; his connections with the USSR, with Mussolini. Now that relations between Russia and the West have improved, we can examine this. At the moment there is a new season in Le Corbusier interpretation.” To this end, the exhibition includes articles that have never previously been published in Russia, as well as Le Corbusier’s own literature.

Completing Le Corbusier’s triumphant return to Russia is a preview of a forthcoming statue, to be erected outside the Tsentrosoyuz building. Even if she couldn’t quite accept his vision of a planned city, Moscow is certainly welcoming him back.
