Hot on the heels of Star Trek: Discovery , Picard , and The Lower Decks , the Star Trek franchise is getting a new video game. Dramatic Labs, a brand new studio composed of former Telltale Games developers, announced during The Game Awards that it’s working on Star Trek: Resurgence , a story-driven game reminiscent of Telltale’s The Wolf Among Us and The Walking Dead .

According to the game’s press release, “Star Trek: Resurgence is an interactive narrative video game that tells an original story set in the era shortly after the events of Star Trek: The Next Generation.”

Players will control two characters aboard the U.S.S. RESOLUTE as they work to unravel a mystery in order to prevent a galactic war. Spock made an appearance in the announcement trailer and Dramatic Labs has confirmed players will get to meet other “new and returning characters through a variety of dialogue and action gameplay to determine the course of the story.”

Dramatic Labs was founded by Kevin Bruner, co-founder of Telltale Games and, according to some sources, part of the reason for Telltale’s disastrous end . Despite this, Dramatic Labs became a home for over 20 former Telltale Games employees. Star Trek: Resurgence features Telltale’s lead writer, creative director, and cinematic director, which might signal the studio’s commitment to making the same kind of games Telltale was famous for.

As in previous Telltale games, player choice will drive the experience and affect the story’s outcome.

“As fans of Star Trek , it’s truly an honor to be crafting a story which puts players right in the heart of the action, where significant choices and decisions will affect the entire narrative,” said Bruner in the press release.

Star Trek: Resurgence launches in Spring 2022 for Xbox, PlayStation, and on the Epic Games Store exclusively for PC.

A new game set in the Star Trek universe and developed by former Telltale Games veterans is coming in 2022 to consoles and PC. Dramatic Labs, the studio formed by those Telltale alumni, announced the game, Star Trek : Resurgence , Thursday at The Game Awards.

Star Trek : Resurgence is described as an original story set in the era after Star Trek: The Next Generation , the syndicated TV series which ran from 1987 to 1994 and revived the hopeful sci-fi franchise created by Gene Roddenberry. The third-person, choice-driven adventure game is set aboard a starship known as the U.S.S. Resolute and features two playable protagonists, First Officer Jara Rydek and Engineering Crewperson Carter Diaz. Through the story, Rydek and Diaz will “unravel a sinister mystery involving two alien civilizations on the brink of war,” Dramatic Labs said in a news release.

Resurgence “will challenge players to make those similar tough choices that iconic Star Trek heroes have been forced to contend with,” according to an official statement.

Dramatic Labs is home to 20 former Telltale developers whose credits include senior roles on The Walking Dead : The Telltale Series, The Wolf Among Us , Game of Thrones: The Telltale Series, and Batman: The Telltale Series .

“As fans of Star Trek , it’s truly an honor to be crafting a story which puts players right in the heart of the action, where significant choices and decisions will affect the entire narrative,” said Kevin Bruner, founder of Dramatic Labs and former Telltale Games CEO , in a statement. “Built from the ground up using Epic’s Unreal engine and our proprietary narrative engine, this game showcases our team’s evolution in creating thought-provoking story-rich adventures.”

Star Trek: Resurgence is slated for release in spring 2022 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC (through the Epic Games Store), Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.

A surprise announcement was made on Thursday evening during The Game Awards; a new Star Trek game for PC and consoles is arriving in the spring of 2022. We have details and a trailer for Star Trek: Resurgence , a third-person choice-driven adventure game.

Star Trek: Resurgence

Dramatic Labs, a new fully remote independent game developer comprised of veterans from Telltale Games, in collaboration with ViacomCBS Consumer Products, today revealed Star Trek: Resurgence , a new third-person choice-driven adventure game set within Star Trek’s 24th century Prime Universe. Star Trek: Resurgence is scheduled for worldwide release in Spring 2022 for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PlayStation5, PlayStation4 gaming consoles, and exclusively on the Epic Games Store for PCs.

Star Trek: Resurgence is an interactive narrative video game that tells an original story set in the era shortly after the events of Star Trek: The Next Generation . Here is a synopsis of the story:

Stationed aboard the U.S.S. RESOLUTE, players will assume the role of two principal characters, First Officer Jara Rydek and Engineering Crewperson Carter Diaz, as they unravel a sinister mystery involving two alien civilizations on the brink of war. Throughout the game, players will immerse themselves in the Star Trek universe, interacting with new and returning characters through a variety of dialogue and action gameplay to determine the course of the story.

Check out the announcement trailer…

“We’re thrilled to be working with the team at Dramatic Labs on an exciting new adventure in the Star Trek franchise,” said Lourdes Arocho, Senior Vice President, Paramount Pictures Licensing, Global Games and Publishing, ViacomCBS Consumer Products. “Players will boldly set forth into this new adventure, meeting familiar characters and new cultures, while interacting with them in profound and impactful ways. This game will challenge players to make those similar tough choices that iconic Star Trek heroes have been forced to contend with.”

The Dramatic Labs team is composed of industry veterans, including twenty former Telltale developers that have worked on games such as The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series , The Wolf Among Us , Game of Thrones: The Telltale Series , and Batman: The Telltale Series .

“As fans of Star Trek, it’s truly an honor to be crafting a story which puts players right in the heart of the action, where significant choices and decisions will affect the entire narrative,” said Kevin Bruner, Founder of Dramatic Labs. “Built from the ground up using Epic’s Unreal engine and our proprietary narrative engine, this game showcases our team’s evolution in creating thought-provoking story-rich adventures.”

This just makes me wish Stage 9 had been allowed to continue/been scooped up for an official project like this… sort of like when Dice scooped up the mod team behind Desert Combat to create Battlefield 2 back in the day.

I hope this is good, there hasn’t been a good Star Trek game since Bridge Commander. Not one that stays true to the spirit of the films/shows anyway.

They could literally make a Mass Effect style game and slap a Star Trek skin over it and it’d be great.

Disagree, there have been a few gems since Bridge Commander. Star Trek Online is quite decent and Star Trek Bridge Crew is really special if you have a virtual reality setup.

From what I’ve seen from Bridge Crew it doesn’t seem like you actually do much though, STO, does not feel like Star Trek at all to me, too much running around killing and constant combat.

Remember Star Trek A Final Unity? 25th Anniversary just to name a couple? Even Birth of the Federation, all those games were so immersive.

I’m right with you on STO. The last several “episodes” added to the game, were nothing but pew-pew combat, fighting waves of enemies on the ground, beam up to your ship, fight waves of enemy ships.

Where’s the Exploration? Solving mysteries, solving things without violence, use of diplomacy etc. “To seek out new life and new civilizations”, all we seem to do is go around killing anything that looks at us in the wrong way. Maybe STO is actually in the Mirror Universe, and we’re actually playing as the Terran Empire. Would make more sense…

Star Trek Online is quite decent

Can’t agree with you there. STO is a monetization nightmare. Nothing but promos and lockboxes for several years now, with the occasional new episode added (fewer each year). Also been several years since the last expansion. Deprecating legacy features like “exploration”, some of the early episodic content etc, with promises to replace with something better. Not seen this replacement yet. STO needs to be taken out of the hands of Cryptic/PWE and put in more capable hands, who know what Trek is about and how it should be handled (much like a certain other corporation really).

The Ferengi would absolutely love STO though…

Wasn’t at least one of the Armadas after Bridge commander? Also Legacy was kind of fun to play. But I’m with you on Star Trek Online. It feels way to Fan Fiction-y … Bridge Crew looks interesting, but I could only play the Quest version and I’m still unsure about those 30 Euros.

Could’ve been, just to be clear I’m not saying there haven’t been a lot of fun Trek games, I’ve loved most of them, I’m just saying there’s not many that stay true to the spirit of it.

However, I would dig a Star Trek Game, escpecially a telltale Style game, where you Just have Episode like in a old school Star Trek Show. Little advetures but a handfull If Them in a season and mit alwS saving the entire universe.

Damn…. Sometimes I hate autocorrect.

Man I got super excited and thought they were announcing another show lol!

Full disclosure I’ve never played a Star Trek video game in my life. But this looks REALLY good though. I love seeing Spock at the end. The voice actor did a pretty good job.

Indeed, he did. I wonder who it is.

I think it’s a clip from a movie audio track.

Looks like the traditional trek video games, set maybe in and around Nemesis, can’t wait! Has Fallen/EliteForce/Generations vibes to it

No Nintendo Switch release. Bummer.

Ahhhh. A single-player story-driven Star Trek game. I thought we’d never come back to that. And TNG movie era too (Though I’ll never accept literal window viewscreens on the bridge!)

I’ll definitely be following this one.

Telltale Star Trek sounds good to me….hope its on IOS too at release

Should have set it during the movie era!! Any plans to remake Star Fleet Command? That is the only game I feel where starships felt like Starships and the other races had some character. Best adventure games, hands down, Star Fleet 25th Anniversay and Judgement Rites. They really have to one day finish Secret of Vulcan Fury be it a CGI show or the game itself.

It is set in the movie era…

Who is that voicing Spock there

It sounds like a clip from one of the movies or perhaps TNG episode Unification 1.

the 10 seconds of actual gameplay look kind of cool. Although as a trailer it also reminds me a lot of those weird ads you get for mobile games, that never have anything to do with the actual game 😅 … also: is that supposed to be Spock? If so, the voice actor does a pretty decent job of channeling Nimoy

This is like a dream come true! The best Star Trek games have always been adventure games. Of course, these days, the term “Adventure” can be used very liberally, but if there are people from Telltale involved then I’m sold. This game could be the push I need to finally upgrade from PS3 to a second-hand PS4. Also pleased that the game is set in the TNG movie era so I get to see those awesome gray uniforms again. Happy days are here.

Window viewscreen again 🙄

Makes sense. Telltale wanted to do more big franchises but couldn’t find a way to make the licensing costs worth the expense.

One of my favorite games was DS9: The Fallen, partly because it had a little bit of a choose your own adventure feel to it – the story was not open-ended, but you would be able to play as Sisko, Kira or Worf and thus play totally different maps that went with that character’s storyline the whole way through.

It’s 2021, as a gamer it makes me sad that the visuals look like this. I like the fact that it’s an adventure game and I have a strong feeling that it will FEEL like playing the old pc games like A Final Unity but again, it already looks so very dated with that trailer. Assassin’s Creed, Mass Effect Andromeda, Mass Effect 3 even, and Fallen Order – anything in that realm would at least make gamers who never have Star Trek on their radar (MOST gamers) sit up and take notice. Again, I’m looking forward to the gameplay, story, and the fact that it’s a single player adventure game but man those it could use a little upgrade. Hopefully I feel different when playing it.

NEW “Star Trek: Infinite” Game Revealed!

Dom Paris

A new Star Trek Game, “Star Trek: Infinite”, was just revealed at Summer Games Festival 2023! We just had “ Star Trek: Resurgence ” release two weeks ago, and now we have a brand new game to look forward to! This has been a good year for Star Trek games, with a Star Trek: Prodigy game and Resurgence.

We only have a small teaser trailer so far, but what we have seen makes us excited! We should expect more news on Star Trek: Infinite next week on Picard Day on June 16th 2023 !

Grand Strategy Star Trek

Strategy and Star Trek is a combination that goes very well together, and it seems like this is what “Star Trek: Infinite” is. Paradox Interactive are well known in the strategy genre and tweets by developer Nimble Giant Entertainment seem to confirm it is a Strategy game. It is also confirmed not to be a mobile game!

This will allow you to take command of factions, increase your territory and influence and fight other factions. From the trailer and promotional art, it looks like 4 factions are available. These are; The United Federation of Planets, The Klingon Empire, The Romulan Star Empire and the Cardassian Union. With these factions, as well as the faction leaders, this will most definitely be “The Next Generation” era.

star trek game upcoming

The trailer also shows a fleet of Starfleet ships heading off against a Borg Cube. “Stellaris”, a previous space strategy game made by Paradox had ancient powers in their game that awoke as endgame threats. This game could feature the Borg as a similar threat.

After the fighting has happened between the factions of the Star Trek Universe, the Borg may appear to pose a suitable endgame threat for you.

Captain Picard Day

It seems like we will be getting more news of this brand new game very soon! The full reveal will be shown on June 16th for Captain Picard Day. We have had news drop on Captain Picard Day before, with the Star Trek: Picard Season 2 trailer having dropped on June 16th 2021. Could we also be seeing more news on this day?

Star Trek Picard Season 3 is doing an Emmy “For Your Consideration” campaign, and Captain Picard Day would be a good place to try and promote that. We could also see some other news at Picard Day, considering First Contact Day this year was uneventful.

Edit – More Information!

Paradox Interactive have put out a press release for Star Trek: Infinite which gives us more information as to what we can expect from this new Star Trek Game! It is confirmed that Star Trek: Infinite is a Grand Strategy game! The game is set a few decades before Star Trek: The Next Generation! This means it is during the “lost era” of Star Trek, which is really cool to see!

It is also confirmed that you will have the choice to command one of four major powers. These are the United Federation of Planets, Romulan Star Empire, Cardassian Union, and Klingon Empire.

Star Trek: Infinite puts players in command of one of four major powers in the galaxy, each with individualized traits, stories, quests, and more to make their play feel distinct. With stunning visuals, difficult choices, and unique gameplay, this game allows players to experience a beloved franchise in a new way as they navigate contact with other empires and worlds. Paradox Interactive

This makes us extremely excited for this game. There are stories and quests for the factions. The gameplay between the different factions will also be different, which should allow for a good level of replay-ability! I just cannot wait to learn more about this game come Picard Day on June 16th 2023!

Star Trek: Infinite review - make it so-so

This mind-meld creates something that feels a bit like walking into the middle of someone else’s stellaris game.

Star Trek Infinite

TechRadar Verdict

A deep and interesting Star Trek game that doesn’t quite scratch the strategy itch, but Trekkies will appreciate the chance to explore a new twist on a familiar universe. Still, I found myself itching for the depth of the very similar strategy powerhouse Stellaris.

Deep Star Trek lore

A focus on boldly going just about everywhere

Builds on familiar Stellaris mechanics

Feels very limited for a grand strategy title

Only four playable races

Why you can trust TechRadar We spend hours testing every product or service we review, so you can be sure you’re buying the best. Find out more about how we test.

Platform reviewed: PC Available on: PC, MacOS Release date: October 12

Star Trek : Infinite sure is boldly going, but where it’s going to is a place I'm familiar with. It feels lazy to point at the empire-building 4X strategy (the 4 X’s stand for explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate) Infinite and mention that it’s just a reskinned version of Paradox’s own space-based Stellaris but after 25 hours with the game, I’m fairly convinced this is little more than a $30 licensed mod for that game.

The thing is, if you’re okay with the deep sci-fi and you don’t need a lot of people prancing around in red leotards to have a good time Stellaris is already a fantastic Star Trek game. You explore galaxies, make first contact with a host of different alien races, and ally up in big federations to bend the galaxy to your will before inevitably teaming up to contend with one of several end game crises, the sentient species desperately banding together to try and survive.

Want to be the bad guys? Since Stellaris was released back in 2016 several official expansions have fleshed out every part of the game so the only real caveat is… how bad do you want to be? Want to be a people-eating machine horde? A shadowy megacorporation? A warlike race of mushrooms that are trapping any worlds in impenetrable bubbles that doom them to life on a single planet? You can do all of those.

For Star Trek fans, the universe often remixes itself with the only true thread being a love of big philosophical questions and space lasers. Stellaris has all of that, so a cut-back version that has a license and a slightly off-brand Picard in the keyart feels somewhat superfluous.

But that’s what we’ve got. The key art Picard looks a bit uncanny valley, and Star Trek: Infinite has just four playable races (evil Vulcan Romulans, the boring good guys the Federation, my eternal warbuds the Klingons, and the Cardassians) and it feels so limited compared to the two existing Star Trek total conversion mods that already exist for Stellaris I’m not really sure what the point is.

Set phasers to… eh

Star Trek Infinite

Unrelated, but did I mention that Star Trek: Infinite costs $30? While the total conversion mods for Stellaris are free and don’t make Paradox any extra money? I did, and that’s because it’s hard to think about anything else after a few hours of playing Infinite .

There are a couple of twists on the formula, but the biggest change is also the worst: play Stellaris and you’ll start on a single planet and slowly map the stars. Pick one of the four races in Infinite and you’ll drop into a universe that’s already carved up, and it feels like you’ve dropped into someone else’s run at a grand strategy game, robbing you of the early exploration and instead, the game asks you to immediately grapple with running a handful of planets straight off the bat. God, running the Federation just seems like a lot of work, and it’s stifling.

In Star Trek Infinite you juggle several different resources and take your empire to dominance in the universe, whatever dominance looks like for you. This might involve you wanting to be an economic powerhouse, militant warmongers, or stealthy diplomats. The beauty is that there are so many different ways to “win”, you can kind of pursue your own path.

Star Trek Infinite

Diving into each faction’s focus trees, it’s impressive to see the care lavished on the different races. Klingons will get specific skills to emphasis their… Klingonness, for example.

In a more granular sense, this involves building out a network of space stations to control your territory and then settling inhabitable planets and constructing a series of civic districts, erecting specialty buildings to enhance their strengths. One world might exist to generate energy credits for you, while another might exist to pull together metals and alloys to build out ships.

If you’re wondering how resource management is happening in a Star Trek game when, famously, Star Trek is set in a universe with no system of currency and the complete absence of scarcity, then I would suggest you just roll with it because it would be an incredibly boring strategy game otherwise. Optimizing these planets and creating a material lead to get you a key scientific breakthrough or a bigger fleet to beat your enemies with is the real meat of Star Trek: Infinite .

Story time

Star Trek Infinite

While this is happening, narrative events are popping off left and right. You start at a huge canon event in the Star Trek universe, the Khitomer Massacre, and you work through from that point with a series of different narrative beats. Get it right and, depending on who you’re playing as, you can follow the canon along and eventually get your hands on the USS Enterprise and several named characters to tool around the galaxy with. In my first game, where I played as the fighty Klingons, this event led to a jumping-off point for the the race and it was easy to say how the atrocity could cause the Klingon civilization to diverge.

These beats are handled fairly well. Playing as the Romulans will let you feel like a space meanie with the mechanics and narratives coming together to fulfill that fantasy. If you have no imagination you can play as the Federation and be nice to everyone before - presumably - daydreaming about Riker lunging his way around a spaceship bridge. It’s not 100 percent accurate to the events, but that’s often because the races themselves are all pursuing their own goals and things never play out the way they do in the series’ canon. This doesn’t grate too much, but it does mean certain moments like building the Enterprise don’t have the heft they should have.

However in just two games and 30 hours of playtime, I feel like I’ve got the bearing of two of Infinite ’s races, and there are currently just four. I’m worried there’s just not enough depth here, especially when - and I’m sorry to bring it up again - Stellaris has a stack of these races and you can even jump into a randomly-generated race and just see what that opens up for you.

I love Star Trek because of that thrill of exploration and the feeling of discovering brave new worlds. You can do that here, but it feels like those far-off stars are just a little too familiar. Paradox famously reinvent their games and work on them over a long time so if I were charitable I could say that this Trek- ’em-up will undoubtedly get a host of improvements. I don’t think they’d convince me to return though: the infinite expanse of space already feels very limited indeed.

Accessibility features

As a strategy game with variable time controls, you can pretty much play Star Trek: Infinite at your own pace. There are very few additional accessibility options on offer here though, largely comprised of some multiplayer text-to-speech options and the ability to rescale your UI and subtitles.

How we reviewed Star Trek: Infinite

I played 30 hours of Star Trek: Infinite on PC, spreading my time between a meaty 20-hour save playing as Klingons and a smaller game playing as The Federation. I also re-watched several episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation , which isn’t strictly necessary, but felt like a good companion to several narrative chains in the game that referenced those events directly.

Our list of the best PC strategy games is bound to provide you with a new game to sink some hours into.

'Star Trek: Resurgence' Comic Adds Depth and Scope to Highly-Anticipated Upcoming Video Game

The tie-in comic miniseries details the catastrophe which befalls the crew of the U.S.S. Resolute prior to the events of the game!

Building upon the wave of excitement for Dramatic Labs’ upcoming interactive video game , IDW is thrilled to announce the five-issue comic book prequel of the same name, STAR TREK: RESURGENCE ! Exploring the calamitous events of the U.S.S. Resolute preceding the game’s main storyline, the miniseries will be written by Andrew Grant and Dan Martin with art by Josh Hood ( Avatar: The Next Shadow, We Can Never Go Home ) and will debut in November.

On a windswept planet bordering the notoriously hostile Talarian Republic , a scientist on the cusp of developing technology that will revolutionize warp goes missing. The crew of the U.S.S. Resolute is tasked with an urgent stealth mission to recover Dr. Leah Brahms and keep her research out of enemy hands!

“I can’t wait for fans to have a truly immersive game experience on the bridge of the U.S.S. Resolute and discover the formative events that indelibly shaped the ship and crew via the comic books,” says Grant. “I’m grateful to have worked on a franchise that is genuinely hopeful about the future, that takes into consideration the needs of the many, and views diversity as a singular source of strength.”

“I really wanted to spend more time with the crew of the U.S.S. Resolute , so I’m thrilled to take fans on another adventure in this prequel comic,” says Martin. “There are some familiar faces along for the ride and as a longtime Star Trek fan myself, it’s sometimes hard to believe that I actually get to bring life to characters which I first met on TV decades ago.”

“Drawing Star Trek is a bit of a double-edged sword. The iconography is burned into the minds of so many fans that when you get something wrong—the phasers, the bridge of a starship, the comms badges—it's instantly recognizable as being wrong. But when you get it right, the entire experience of being in the 24th Century seems to slide right into place,” says Hood.

“The universe is vast in the 24th Century, and any opportunity we have to explore the stories of characters that don’t always make it to the big screen gives us a freedom to do things in the comics we don’t always get to do,” says editor Heather Antos . “Combined with Dan and Andrew’s experience working on the game itself, alongside Josh’s clear love of Trek , STAR TREK: RESURGENCE is blasting off into brand-new corners of the Star Trek comics universe.”

STAR TREK: RESURGENCE #1 will be available in November with three variant covers ( above ) for fans and retailers to enjoy, including Cover A by series illustrator Hood, Cover B by Dramatic Labs , and a retailer incentive variant by Malachi Ward .

What's Coming For Star Trek In 2024

Star Trek ended 2023 in a big way, and 2024 looks to do even more with the beloved science fiction franchise.

Star Trek is an inspiring and hopeful franchise that fans can enjoy in a number of mediums, from novels to TV shows. 2023 offered a number of stellar projects, such as the second season of Strange New Worlds and Picard's third season. The powers that be look to continue creating high-quality Star Trek projects for the franchise's fanbase in 2024. Not only are new seasons coming to different streaming platforms, but 2024 is also the year many new projects go into production.

Star Trek in 2024 isn't just going to flood audiences' TV screens. Many projects are in different mediums, like novels, comic books, and even board games. Some of these projects offer fans opportunities to see an inspiring future where Earth has evolved beyond poverty, while others put them in the captain's chair on a starship.

Star Trek: 7 Worst Planets To Live On

Sons of star trek.

Sons of Star Trek is a comic book that focuses on the children of several legacy characters. Deep Space Nine fans remember Jake Sisco and Alexander Rozhenko, sons of Captain Benjamin Sisko and Commander Worf, respectively, whom the miniseries follows as they struggle with the aftermath of the Day of Blood miniseries.

Their stories become intertwined for a time, and the duo lands themselves in an alternate dimension where their alternate selves follow in their fathers' footsteps. Joining them on their adventure are Q Jr . and Starfleet's first Ferengi officer, Nog. Morgan Hampton writes the series, and Angel Hernandez illustrates it.

Star Trek: Discovery, Season 5

Star Trek: Discovery was the first Star Trek series to air in 12 years after Enterprise ended in 2005. It made a splash, becoming the most viewed original series on Paramount+. It was also the first series in the franchise to follow an ongoing story that leaned away from the exploration aspect that older shows focused on.

Discovery's setting is a unique one, as it started ten years prior to the original series. Then, at the end of the second season, the crew traveled to the 32nd century. 2024 will see Discovery's fifth and final season and finish Captain Michael Burnham's story nearly 1,000 years in the future from where the series began. Thanks to Star Trek: Discovery , fans got multiple spin-offs, including Strange New Worlds and the upcoming Section 31, which goes into production in 2024.

Star Trek: Prodigy

Star Trek: Prodigy has had a rocky start, with its first season airing on Paramount+ only to get the axe by the season finale. Luckily, showrunners Dan and Kevin Hageman shopped around and managed to convince Netflix to pick up its second season, breathing new life into the series.

Prodigy is an animated series that follows a group of young aliens who discover a derelict Starfleet starship and work together to pilot it around the galaxy in search of a better future. Kate Mulgrew reprises her role as Captain Katherine Janeway, in the form of a hologram advisor. The show takes place only five years after the USS Voyager returned to the Alpha Quadrant, and follows this new group as they follow the same path that the Voyager took to escape the Delta Quadrant .

Into the Unknown

Star Trek isn't confined to the television screen when it comes to new projects in 2024. Star Trek: Into the Unknown is a strategy board game that puts players in control of some of the most popular starships from the franchise's history. Every ship is built to scale, meaning the larger ships like the Enterprise will tower over smaller starships like the Defiant.

Players choose to either play as Starfleet, or the Dominion's Vorta and Jem'Hadar , and they have to rely on diplomacy and research just as much as combat to progress the game. Decisions matter in Into the Unknown, where choosing to fight the Vorta rather than engage in negotiations can and will have long-lasting effects.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Season 3

Season two of Strange New Worlds ended on a massive cliffhanger, with the Enterprise fighting the Gorn and Captain Christopher Pike undecided on how to proceed against them. Strange New Worlds has been a breath of fresh air for Star Trek , reminding the fanbase of what made the franchise so great to begin with. The Gorn have gradually increased as a looming threat since season one and might become the primary antagonist, just as Deep Space Nine had the Founders and Voyager had the Borg.

Anson Mount has portrayed Captain Pike brilliantly, and sets himself apart from previous Star Trek captains in a good way. The production window for the new season is between December 2023 and June 2024, setting the season premiere in the latter half of the new year.

Star Trek: Infinite Preview

Star Trek: Infinite Preview

If you’ve read any of my past articles, you’ll know that I’ve played an unseemly amount of Paradox’s  Crusader Kings III and may have a completely normal love of Star Trek . Thus, when I saw that Paradox was going to publish a game for Star Trek alongside Nimble Giant Entertainment , I had to take a moment. A few moments. Several moments. Perhaps my heart stopped. Who knows?

Digressing from my personal problems (and possibly heart palpitations), Star Trek: Infinite is an upcoming grand strategy game for the PC, the first of its kind for the franchise if Steam’s blurb reads true. I was lucky enough to play a preview (and I didn’t hyperventilate once!) over the last few days and I am here to report my findings.

The game begins in 2340. For timeline reference, we are bang on in the later half of Cardassian-occupied Bajor, 83 years after the Federation-Klingon War, and 23 years until the Enterprise-D first embarks. It’s also the year Worf was born.

Happy birthday, Worf.

<p>As gags go, it’s a really funny moment, and hearing John de Lancie voice his chaotic character in animated form was a real treat. However, the nature of the Star Trek: Lower Decks joke really undercuts the idea that Q and Picard had a very special relationship: not only does the godlike being dunk on Picard for being too serious, but we now have canonical proof that he likes to bother random Starfleet officers, from captains of special destiny all the way to lowly ensigns.</p>

Behind The Scenes

Joe Chandler serves as showruuner and executive producer on Golden Axe, with Mike McMahon also handling producing duties. The pair will also co-write the first episode. Haruki Satomi, Shuji Utsumi, and Toru Nakahara from Sega, in addition to Neal H. Moritz, Pavun Shetty, and Toby Ascher of Original Film, will serve as executive producers.

Titmouse is the animation studio for the Golden Axe series, led by executive producers Chris Prynoski, Shannon Prynoski, Antonio Canobbio, and Ben Kalina. McMahan gained recognition for his work as a writer and executive producer on Rick and Morty and creator of the animated Star Trek: Lower Decks. Chandler, an executive producer on American Dad, has written for shows like Napoleon Dynamite.

The Star Trek “Origin” Movie Is Finally Going Into Production

The new Star Trek prequel movie is set to be revealed on the big screen. Probably.

LOS ANGELES - DECEMBER 1: Leonard Nimoy as Commander Spock (Mr. Spock) in the STAR TREK: The Origina...

For 30 years — from 1979 to 2009 — the longest wait between new Star Trek feature films was seven years. And, for most of that period, from the release of Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) to Star Trek: Nemesis (2002), there was almost always a new Star Trek movie in theaters every two to four years. But after the wildly successful J.J. Abrams-directed reboot film in 2009, the release clip for Trek movies went from maximum warp to impulse power, to glacially slow. And now, by the time the next Star Trek movie hits theaters, it will have been about 10 years since the previous one — Star Trek Beyond — beamed into cinemas in 2016.

Since that time, for Trekkies, updates of a new Star Trek film have been very similar to the game football Lucy plays with Charlie Brown; just when a hypothetical movie sounds real, it gets snatched away. But now, there’s a glimmer of hope. Thanks to reports out of CinemaCon 2024, it looks like, the next Trek film is scheduled for release in either 2025 or 2026. But what’s it about? And will it really happen?

Star Trek 14 is “an untitled origin story”

Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto in 'Star Trek' (2009).

The new “origin story” will be set before the 2009 reboot. But how many decades before?

During CinemaCon 2024, Paramount confirmed several in-development projects including a live-action GI Joe / Transformers crossover (teased in 2023’s Rise of the Beasts ), a hardcore Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles live-action movie, a remake of the sci-fi thriller The Running Man (from Edgar Wright), the confirmation of an Avatar trilogy, and the assertion that a new Star Trek feature film will go into production this year, with a release date soon to follow.

Since 2016 to now, there have been at least five different attempts to make a new Star Trek film, either as timey wimey direct sequel to Beyond (“Star Trek 4”) a one-off space mobster movie (Quentin Tarantino’s script) or something else entirely (Noah Hawley and Matt Shakman’s attempts that remain undisclosed). But now, although Paramount is reportedly developing a sequel to Beyond — which would feature the reboot cast from the 2009 film one last time — the next Star Trek movie is not that sequel, but instead, as previously reported , an “origin story” that “takes place decades before the 2009 Star Trek film that rebooted the franchise.” This movie has been confirmed to be directed by Toby Haynes ( Andor, Doctor Who ) with a script from Seth Grahame-Smith ( The Lego Batman Movie , Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter) .

Wait? Wasn’t the 2009 film an “origin story?” While the answer to this question is technically a “yes,” the 2009 film (just titled Star Trek ) was also partially a time-travel sequel to the canon established in The Next Generation , and literally everything else in the Trek franchise up until that point. By saying the new prequel film takes place “decades before” the first reboot, this could hypothetically mean that the movie takes place in both the Prime and Kelvin timelines simultaneously.

TLDR: The Trek timeline diverged in the first reboot movie, beginning in the year 2233, so, a story set even a few decades before that divergence, in the 2210s or 2220s or earlier, would be consistent with all versions of Trek's future history. Presumably, the “origin story” won’t take place in the two decades between the prologue of the 2009 film (2233) and the main story (2258), because honestly, even for hardcore Trekkies that’s a big canon headache. So, sometime in the early 2200s, but before the 2230s is probably the best bet. And, even if the movie was set a bit earlier than that — say in the late 2180s or 2190s — we’d still be dealing with a very early point of Starfleet history that has never been depicted and that we know almost nothing about. Hence, if you squint — and don’t think about the prequel series Enterprise (2151-2161) too much — then yes, we’re looking at an origin story in which pretty much anything could happen.

Star Trek “origin” movie release date

LOS ANGELES - DECEMBER 1: The USS Enterprise during the opening credit for in the STAR TREK: The Ori...

One of the earliest shots of the USS Enterprise — from the 1964 Star Trek pilot episode “The Cage.” The new prequel film will likely be set half a century before this moment.

While some tweets out of CinemaCon seemed to indicate that the new Star Trek movie could hit next year in 2025 , TrekMovie confirmed that the “Untitled Star Trek Origin Story,” is on the Paramount slate for 2025 or 2026. TrekMovie also predicted that 2026 is more likely, writing, “If Paramount can move fast enough they could get the origin movie into theaters by 2026 — in time for Star Trek’s 60th anniversary.” Then again, 2025 is not impossible, it’s just cutting it a little close.

It should also be noted that the entire corporate entity of Paramount is reportedly close to a merger that would see it purchased by Skydance Media, the same production company behind the three existing J.J. Abrams-produced Star Trek reboots. If that deal is finalized soon, then, yes, this Star Trek feature film might actually happen very quickly. And if it doesn’t, there will still be plenty of new Star Trek shows streaming , not to mention the first direct-to-streaming standalone Star Trek movie, Section 31 , starring Michelle Yeoh, which will hit Paramount+ sometime later this year.

All the reboot Star Trek films (2009-2016) are currently streaming on Paramount+. The previous ten films (1979-2002) are all on Max.

A Star Trek origin story movie is officially on the way from Andor and Black Mirror director

It's set to take place decades before 2009's Star Trek

Chris Pine in Star Trek Beyond

Paramount has officially announced a new Star Trek movie – but it's not Star Trek 4.

The Untitled Star Trek Origin Story was unveiled at CinemaCon, with J.J. Abrams set to produce (H/T The Wrap ). The film will take place decades before 2009's Star Trek, with Andor's Toby Haynes set to direct and Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter author Seth Grahame-Smith set to pen the script. Plot details have yet to be released. Deadline first announced the film earlier this year.

Haynes directed the popular Black Mirror episode U.S.S Callister, which acts as a Star Trek parody. Black Mirror season 7 will feature a sequel to U.S.S Callister , though it has not yet been announced who will direct.

Paramount also stated that the origin pic would begin production later this year to make it in time for a 2025 theatrical release. Star Trek 4, the sequel to Abrams' 2009 flick, is still in development. WandaVision's Matt Shakman was previously attached to direct, but  left the project  in August 2022  around the same time he was announced as the new Fantastic Four director. Last month, Variety reported that Sucker Punch and Supernatural writer Steve Yockey would pen the fourth Star Trek film, which intends to bring back Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and the rest of the cast.

Arrowverse actor reportedly joining star wars' phantom menace prequel.

A new report claims a classic Arrowverse actor will be joining the cast of The Acolyte, the new live-action Star Wars series coming to Disney+.

  • Actor David Harewood reportedly joins Star Wars' The Acolyte prequel series in a smaller role.
  • Harewood, known for his role in the CW's Arrowverse as Martian Manhunter, adds more star power to the prequel trilogy's prequel series.
  • Harewood's role in the upcoming Star Wars series remains undisclosed, adding anticipation for fans of the actor.

A new report claims an actor from the CW's Arrowverse has a role in Star Wars' upcoming prequel series The Acolyte . Set to begin streaming in June, The Acolyte will feature several different Jedi Knights who lived 100 years before the events of The Phantom Menace as they investigate a dark new threat. As such, it appears as though the show will be featuring yet another popular actor in the prequel trilogy's prequel series.

On The Hot Mic podcast, insider Jeff Sneider revealed that actor David Harewood reportedly has a smaller role in the upcoming Acolyte series . Harewood is best known for his role in the CW's "Arrowverse" of DC Comics live-action shows where he played the Martian Manhunter, having a prominent recurring role on Supergirl specifically.

While Harewood's reported casting is exciting, it's not yet known who he might be playing in the galaxy far, far away during the early High Republic Era .

Star Wars: The Acolyte - Cast, Story Details & Everything We Know

David harewood's acolyte role is unknown, will he play a jedi or someone darker.

Having an alleged smaller role, it's hard to say whom Harwood might be playing in The Acolyte . After all, the new Star Wars show is exploring a largely uncharted time in the canon, even by the standards of the High Republic which itself was only introduced as an early ara of peace and prosperity in 2021. Taking place 100 years before The Phantom Menace , The Acolyte is much further ahead in the Star Wars timeline than what's seen in Lucasfilm's ongoing High Republic novels and comics.

Regardless, David Harewood is quite the imposing character actor who can just as easily play a hero (like DC's Martian Manhunter) as he could a villain. I t's not hard to imagine Harewood playing a leader of the High Republic's Jedi Council . Likewise, he could even be part of the coven of Force users seen in The Acolyte's first trailer. He could even be playing the long-rumored Darth Plagueis, Palpatine's master. However, this assumes that Lucasfilm would ignore the non-canon Legends where Plagueis was identified as an alien Muun. At any rate, the addition of David Harewood to The Acolyte's cast is very exciting.

The Acolyte

The Acolyte is a television series set in the Star Wars universe at the end of the High Republic Era, where both the Jedi and the Galactic Empire were at the height of their influence. This sci-fi thriller sees a former Padawan reunite with her former Jedi Master as they investigate several crimes - all leading to darkness erupting from beneath the surface and preparing to bring about the end of the High Republic.
