Star trek confirms the full potential of an iconic klingon weapon.

The Klingons have many awesome weapons at their disposal, and in Star Trek: Defiant #6, fans see an explosive use for one of the most iconic.

Warning: contains spoilers for Star Trek: Defiant #6! Star Trek has confirmed the awesome potential of an iconic Klingon weapon. A fierce but honorable warrior race, the Klingons have many powerful weapons at their disposal, weapons that are just as brutal as the warriors who wield them. In Star Trek: Defiant #6 , the titular crew find themselves caught in the midst of a full-blown uprising on the Klingon home world ; all seems lost until one of the Defiant’s crew finds a novel use for one Klingon weapon.

In the issue, the crew of the Defiant have arrived on the Klingon homeworld, which is engulfed in chaos. Emperor Kahless and his fanatical Red Path cult have led an uprising, and the Defiant crew have split up. One contingent, consisting of Doctor Crusher, the Romulan commander Sela and a still-unnamed Orion medic, find themselves in the capital city. As the situation deteriorates around them, Sela wishes to stay hidden, leading to an argument with Doctor Crusher . While the two argue, the Orion medic takes a Klingon painstik she pulled off a Red Path member. She fiddles with it for a second and then throws it into the fires, creating a chemical reaction that wipes out nearby Red Path members and clears the way to the Capitol Building. Star Trek: Defiant #6 is written by Christopher Cantwell, drawn by Angel Unzueta, colored by Marissa Louise and lettered by Clayton Cowles.

Klingon Painstiks Are No Joke

In the Star Trek universe, the Klingons are an honorbound warrior race. At times, they have been enemies of the Federation and other times staunch allies. As a species who lives for combat and glory, the Klingons have created a number of awesome and terrifying weapons, such as the disruptor (a far more lethal version of the phaser) as well as the iconic bat’leth blade . Compared to this, the painstik has been considered an afterthought, but here it's clear that in the right hands, it has untapped potential.

The Painstik Has Destructive Potential the Bat'leth Doesn't

While not as iconic or as popular as the bat'leth, the Klingon painstik is still a vital part of their culture. Making its debut during Star Trek: The Next Generation’s second season, the painstik is a weapon only a Klingon could make. As the name implies, it is a long stick that when it touches flesh, creates intense pain. Despite its potential as a weapon, it was used for ceremonial purposes during its most memorable appearance; in the episode, Worf underwent the 'River of Blood' rite, which involved running a gauntlet of painstiks. It was a ritual befitting the Klingons.

Yet now, 35 years after their debut, the Orion medic shows a powerful new use for the painstiks. She draws on her extensive knowledge of not only Klingon weapons, but also chemistry, and in the process jury-rigs the painstik into effectively a grenade. In the hands of the Orion medic, the painstik moved from a largely ceremonial use to a far more practical one. Whether the Klingons have ever used painstiks in this fashion before is unknown, but this issue demonstrates that there are those in Star Trek 's universe who know how devastating this weapon can be.

The Klingon disruptor was the standard hand-held disruptor weapon used by Klingons . With variations of the weapon existing throughout the 22nd , 23rd , and 24th centuries , they were the standard issue alternative to the Klingon disruptor rifle .

In the Broken Bow Incident of 2151 , the Klingon courier Klaang used his disruptor to destroy a corn silo housing two Suliban agents in Broken Bow , Oklahoma , on Earth . ( ENT : " Broken Bow ")

In 2364 , two Klingon renegades imprisoned aboard the USS Enterprise -D assembled a two-pronged, boxy disruptor from elements hidden in their clothing and used it to disable the force field and security personnel. ( TNG : " Heart of Glory ")

In 2365 and 2366 , Klingon officers such as Kargan , Klag , K'Ehleyr , and Kurn carried a distinct variation of disruptor featuring a brown handle, a long black barrel, and an extended silver muzzle. ( TNG : " A Matter Of Honor ", " The Emissary ", " Sins of The Father ")

The dying Klingon first officer Hon-Tihl was armed with a Klingon disruptor when he materialized on Deep Space 9 's transporter pad in 2369 . ( DS9 : " Dramatis Personae ")

Another style of Klingon disruptor could not only be used to fire at a target, but was also equipped with a double-blade on the front of the barrel and a spiked bottom edge of the handle. ( Star Trek Into Darkness , LD : " Envoys ")

In 2259 of the alternate reality , Klingon disruptors of this type were used in a battle between a Klingon patrol, an away party from the USS Enterprise and Khan Noonien Singh , a conflict which took place in the Ketha Province on Qo'noS . ( Star Trek Into Darkness )

In 2380 , several types of disruptor types from 23rd and 24th century were found in a weapons store in the Klingon district on Tulgana IV . ( LD : " Envoys ")

Illegal weapons

In 2381 , Beckett Mariner and Brad Boimler were duped into transporting illegal weapons – namely Klingon disruptors – in a crate of bubble bath . In fear of being caught, Mariner attempted to escape several station security officers in a kart chase. ( LD : " An Embarrassment Of Dooplers ")

Klingon disruptor prop

Penny Juday holding a Klingon disruptor

Klingon disruptors were designed by Matt Jefferies for Star Trek: The Original Series . Alan Sims , who worked as property master on Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Voyager , credited Jefferies with even the look of the Klingon disruptors in TNG. ( Star Trek: Aliens & Artifacts , p. 106)

From the time the disruptors were redesigned for the Star Trek films until their reappearance in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country , the muzzle of each Klingon disruptor was cut off, so the weapons could fit inside their holsters. Hence, no instances of a Klingon disruptor being drawn from its holster were directly shown in the first five movies. However, in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock , although Kruge and another Klingon did draw their disruptors with the uniquely wide muzzles, the views of their holsters were hidden. When Director Nicholas Meyer chose to show scenes of Klingons drawing their disruptors in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country , the prop makers had to account for this. " We had to cut the front of the existing pistols and redesign the front muzzle area, " remembered Greg Jein . ( The Making of the Trek Films , UK 3rd ed., p. 129)

A Klingon disruptor seen in Star Trek: Enterprise was sold off on the It's A Wrap! sale and auction on eBay. [1] Klaang's Klingon disruptor from the pilot episode was also sold and is made from molded foam rubber, painted brown with faux metal accents. It measures 16 × 8 × 3 inches. [2]

Klingons yell for Nero

Alternate reality disruptors that appear in a deleted scene from Star Trek

Klingon disruptor rifles and pistols were designed for scenes on Rura Penthe in the 2009 Star Trek film. However, they were ultimately cut from the movie.

The heavily bladed style of Klingon disruptor that first appeared in Star Trek Into Darkness was designed with the notion of reflecting the barbarism of the Klingons in their props. Prop master Andrew Siegel said of the spiked handle, " You can use it to bash someone's head in if you so desire. " ( Star Trek Magazine  issue 173 , p. 79)

ST weapon accuracy and range

This article deals with demonstrated accuracy and range of various weapons used by major Star Trek civilizations like the Federation , Borg , Dominion , and Klingon Empire .

As the examples provided below demonstrate, engagement range for Star Trek vessels is extremely inconsistent. In combats shown on screen, engagements occur at ranges of a few hundred meters up to several kilometers. Dialogue, on the other hand, often describes ranges of tens of thousands of kilometers. Furthermore, ranges in 23rd century engagements (TOS) are often greater than ranges in 24th century engagements (TNG).

There is no clear explanation for the discrepancies, but there is plenty of speculation:

  • Electronic countermeasures may prevent accurate targeting from extended range, forcing ships to close to ensure hits. This would be particularly likely in large fleet engagements.
  • Star Trek ships often target specific systems on enemy vessels, especially in the 24th century. Such precision targeting might require closing the distance, especially where ECM is in use.

  • 1.14 VOY "Non Sequitur"
  • 1.15 VOY "Equinox"

TOS "The Changeling"

The Enterprise , under attack from the one-meter-tall probe Nomad , returns fire with photon torpedoes. While the precise range is uncertain (the ship was using evasive maneuvers), the last stated range was 90,000 kilometers. A direct hit was reported, although it had no effect. Of course, the same episode says that Nomad hit the Enterprise with the equivalent of 90 photon torpedoes in one shot, and all it did was reduce their shields by 20%; so according to this episode, it would take 450 photon torpedoes to inflict serious damage on a Constitution -class starship.

TOS "Journey to Babel"

Under attack by an Orion vessel, the Enterprise plays dead. The attacker halts it's warp strafing attack, dropping to sublight and closing on the Enterprise . At a stated range of 75,000 kilometers, Kirk orders the helmsman to fire phasers, scoring a direct hit.

TOS "The Deadly Years"

Having taken command of the Enterprise , Commodore Stocker attempts to reach a starbase by taking the ship on a shortcut through the Romulan Neutral Zone to get urgent medical care to the rapidly aging Kirk, Spock, McCoy, and Scott. The ship is consequently attacked by several Romulan Birds of Prey . When Kirk resumes command, Sulu informs him that the range of the Romulan vessels is "fifty to one-hundred thousand kilometers".

TNG "Q Who"

When the Enterprise is attacked by a Borg Cube , Picard orders Worf to target the source of the tractor beam and fire. Shockingly, it takes Worf four tries to hit the beam emitter from point-blank range; the first three shots aren't even close! The range appears to be a kilometer or less.

TNG "Conundrum"

Riker says they are still 55 seconds from "optimal firing range" of the Lysian Central Command, even though they appear to be practically on top of a stationary target that is both very large and very poorly defended (by Federation standards). Although the crew up to that point had been deceived by a Satarran agent into thinking of the Lysians as dangerous opponents, their sensors clearly showed the inferior quality of the Lysian defenses.

At any rate, "optimal firing range" is not necessarily the full range capability of the ship.

TNG "Yesterday's Enterprise"

Three un-cloaked Klingon Birds of Prey close to within a few kilometers before firing on the Enterprise . Likewise, the Enterprise , knowing they will be attacked by the Klingons, doesn't fire until the enemy is at close range (there is no political reason to delay firing, since the Federation is in a state of war with the Klingons in this alternate-timeline episode). The dialogue describes ranges of hundreds of kilometers, but as usual, the visual effects are not consistent with the words.

TNG "The Wounded"

This episode is often cited as evidence for long-range combat by major ST civilizations:

As Data is speaking, the viewscreen shows a two-dimensional display of the battle. If this display is oriented to provide the most useful view of the battle (placing all three of the vessels being tracked in the same plane), then it shows the relative weapon ranges of the ships and the distance between the them. The display casts doubt on Data's description of the battle, since the viewscreen shows that the Phoenix is still well within weapons range of the Cardassian ship, which actually has greater range than the Phoenix if the display is accurate.

It should also be noted that the ships involved in the battle are travelling at warp speeds , so a gap of 300,000 km could easily drop to zero in less than a second. It may also be worth noting that the Phoenix engaged with torpedoes , and the Cardassian ship was pursuing the Phoenix : the Phoenix would therefore have been running away from any torpedoes fired by the Cardassian ship, while the Cardassian ship was running toward the torpedoes fired by the Phoenix , possibly explaining the "out of range" statement (assuming torpedoes have greater range than phasers).

The battle between the Enterprise and the Cardassian warship, Trager , earlier in the episode, further disproves any optimistic interpretation of Data's range description. As the screenshot to the left shows, the ships engage at a range of several hundred meters. Presumably, the Cardassians closed to optimum range to maximize the effect of catching the Federation starship off-guard. Even so, the Trager's ambush caused only minor damage.

TNG "The Arsenal of Freedom"

Left in command of the Enterprise , Geordi takes the drive section of the ship into the atmosphere of the planet Minos to lure a cloaked alien drone into following them. The drone pursues them into the atmosphere, where they are able to detect its wake and target it. If the drone were capable of attacking from a range of thousands of kilometers, it would not have needed to follow the Enterprise into the planet's atmosphere. Geordi's tactic is presumably based on the assumption that the Minosian drone's targeting limitations are similar to their own.

Earlier in the episode, a shot from the drone hits the Enterprise , and the source appears to be in shot but not visible. It's not clear whether the drone is too far away to be visible or simply not visible to the naked eye because of its alien cloaking technology ; while it shows up briefly on sensors when attacking (too briefly to be successfully targeted by Federation weapons), the drone is never actually seen until it enters the planet's atmosphere.

TNG "A Matter of Honor"

A Klingon Bird of Prey is preparing to attack the Enterprise-D . Riker, serving aboard as an exchange officer, advises to the Klingon captain to close to within 40,000 km before firing.

The dialogue suggests that the ships could have engaged from a range of more than 40,000 km.

DS9 "The Search, Pt. I"

The Defiant is travelling at warp and under cloak within Dominion space. Long-range sensors detect two Jem'Hadar warships cruising at warp five on a course that will bring them within 100,000 kilometers. Kira says that's well within their weapon range.

DS9 "The Die is Cast"

Commander Sisko orders Dax to bring the Defiant to within 500 meters of a group of Jem'Hadar fighters before firing on them. The advantage he sought by closing to such short range isn't clear. The Jem'Hadar attack ships opened fire from a reported 50 kilometers range, a brief glimpse of the Defiant's viewscreen supports this.

DS9 "Call to Arms"

In this episode, a Dominion fleet attacks Deep Space 9. Even when engaging a completely immobile target, the Dominion ships close to within several kilometers before opening fire.

The screenshot on the right shows the Dominion/ Cardassian fleet approaching Deep Space 9 to the point of it taking up a significant fraction of the field of view. Yet in the following scene, Damar reports that they will not be in weapons range for another minute [1] .

After the battle is joined, the attacking fleet continues to fight at extremely close ranges; however, even ranges of several hundred meters appear to be too great for Deep Space 9 targeting sensors to achieve a reasonable accuracy. On the left we can see a Cardassian Hideki-class attack ship flying straight towards Deep Space 9's central assembly. The Hideki doesn't change course or attempt to evade incoming fire, yet Deep Space 9 only scores two grazing shots on it, thus failing to stop the craft.

Further evidence of limited accuracy comes from the end of the episode. As the Defiant and a Bird of Prey flee DS9, the Dominion fleet opens fire, and we see 11 shots fired without a single one hitting the fleeing ships. The shots can be seen at right, and -- as is immediately apparent -- the ships are flying in a tight formation without making any attempts to evade enemy fire. As before, the range is on the order of several hundred meters or several kilometers at most.

VOY "Basics, Part I"

Voyager comes under attack from several Kazon Predator -class ships, with ranges stated in thousands of kilometers. The Kazon begin firing torpedoes from more than 10,000 kilometers. Janeway refuses to return fire until closer than 2000 kilometers.

Relevant dialog:

It is clear that Voyager could at the very least have fired photon torpedoes at any time, but Janeway clearly wants to conserve them. It is also apparent that the Kazon could not accurately target the Voyager at warp speed, as they were "randomly" detonating torpedoes ahead of the ship. Indeed, even at sublight speeds, Paris saw no reason to begin evasive maneuvers until closer than 2000km.

As usual for Star Trek, the visual effects shots are inconsistent with the dialogue, showing engagement ranges of a few thousand meters , at most.

VOY "Non Sequitur"

Ensign Harry Kim is thrust into an alternate timeline where he never served on Voyager . In order to get back to his proper timeline, he convinces the alternate timeline Paris to help him steal a runabout and return to the temporal phenomena that brought him from his timeline to this one. Consequently they are pursued and fired on from several thousand kilometers by a Nebula-class starship.

The relevant dialog:

Remarkably, in a cut scene between when Paris calls out the range and when Kim calls out shield damage, the visuals show the Yellowstone being hit by the Nebula's phaser beam which appears from far behind it, then the runabout passes out of view and the Nebula immediately appears as a small point, grows larger as it nears the camera, and then passes offscreen as the runabout did.

VOY "Equinox"

Voyager reportedly attacks the Equinox with phasers from 30,000 km away. Upon closer inspection of the episode, however, we find that no evidence of such range exists. On the contrary, the episode implies far shorter maximum ranges of Federation ships.

Since Janeway only instructed the crew to start targeting Equinox's power core at 30,000km, and since there is a scene cut between the order and the first known hit, there is no way to determine how far away Voyager actually was when it started firing upon Equinox.

Further events in the episode suggest much lower ranges:

If Voyager were capable of scoring hits from anywhere near 30,000km, there would be no need to follow the Equinox into the atmosphere and risk damage due to atmospheric friction.

Star Trek: How Do Phasers Work?

How these standard issue multi tools of destruction are far more useful than they might seem.

In the world of Star Trek, there can be found a plethora of incredible science fiction technology. Innovations range from warp drives that bend space to allow faster-than-light travel , all the way to the replication of food and drink from light. But while many of these technologies are used primarily for science, exploration, or recreation, the standard issue Starfleet Phasers are creations of attack and defense. So how exactly do these laser beam firing devices work?

At first glance, these weapons seem fairly simple in their application. They can stun an opponent in defense, or on the rare occasion, kill. However, they are interesting as they are far more multipurpose than they appear. Over the years, they have become somewhat of a Starfleet officer's multi tool. They can not only incapacitate enemies, but the technology is also used for a variety of purposes. They are able to melt metals together, heat things up, and even create artwork: burning marks onto canvas with precision.

RELATED: Star Trek: How Does Holodeck Technology Work?

The Weapon Of Starfleet

In terms of their destructive power, as phasers are used mainly as weapons, they are capable of a wide variety of things. On a low setting, they can be used to stun. Depending on the exact level of power the user specifies, this can mean anything from throwing a person backwards to knocking them out completely. A mighty Klingon , for example would be able to withstand a much higher degree of power from a phaser than a human would.

The stun setting on a phaser seems to be an impressive piece of technology . Trained officers must fine tune them to create the desired effect, much like an officer of today knowing the degree of electrical charade to pulse through a taser. On a high setting, these tiny devices are capable of large scale destruction. They can be used to kill, but also completely disintegrate a person if the setting was put high enough, rendering them to Endgame style dust . In the shows, they are suggested to be able to destroy buildings. Commander Data showcases this in the Season 3 The Next Generation episode "Ensigns of Command," where he uses a phaser to destroy an aqueduct.

In addition to their ability to vary their potential destructive capabilities, phasers can also vary their precision. These pocket-sized devices use particles instead of the more traditional energy, or ‘laser beam’ technology. As such, they rely on wavelengths to produces their desired effect. These wavelengths can be altered by the user, much like how a disruptor or works, producing a wave that can affect either a small or large area. This allows the user to aim at very specific targets without affecting anything around it. Phasers are precise enough for a protagonist to cross the line and completely disintegrate a person, without harming those standing directly next to them.

The Creation & Philosophy Of The Phaser

The devices were created, like many other Star Trek technologies, at last minute and with little explanation of how they worked. Rather, the technical details were added as the show developed over time. This is no criticism of The Original Series , as many other shows at the time functioned similarly due to time or budget restrains. When the creators were first fleshing out the idea, the producers had the cast carry what were essentially tranquilizer b-b guns, which would shoot small sedative pellets. This quickly proved to be a terrible idea, as the pellets were stopped by even the most primitive of armor or even clothing. They required skin contact to work (or at least make sense), so the producers chose to make them lasers.

Laser weapons were not only visually interesting, but also made sense for the these futuristic explorers. The issue, however, was that a laser was just as lethal as a gun. Roddenberry wanted the show to highlight his utopian vision of a future that favors peace over violence ( despite Starfleet ultimately being the Federation's Military ). To resolve this, he created a laser that could vary its power. Like many things in Star Trek, there was no real science behind this, at least at the start. Writers later scrambled to try and explain how this could work. They came up with the idea of a particle known as a nadion, and the complex science behind the phasers was born. One technical manual within canon gives the following explanation, and even then the majority of it is technobabble with no further explanation:

‘The Phaser (or the Phased Energy Rectification) uses the Rapid Nadion Effect to transfer and liberate strong nuclear forces through a super-conducting crystal. After this, the energy then passes through a Kawamura-Franklin Circuit, which then monopolarically phases it.’

Phasers have become a staple of the show ever since their introduction. They are both a device of violence, as well as a symbol of a more peaceful future for humanity . While soldiers of today are given guns whose only purpose is to kill, a phaser is a much better alternative. It is able to kill only when necessary, while also providing non-lethal means to incapacitate a foe. It is used as a form of defense, rather than offense. While the technical mechanics of the device have never been fleshed out (and seem to vary from show to show) their core message is a good one. There are always alternatives to killing, something Star Trek holds as one of its core messages.

The Type-2 pistol body was acquired directly from Star Trek prop designer and builder Wah Ming Chang in the late 1960s (Chang designed and built the Starfleet Communicators and Tricorders for the original series). The accompanying LOA states the studio had sent the Phaser pistol body to Chang for repair and the show was cancelled before he was able to return it. The Type-1 Hand Phaser was acquired by a member of the production crew after filming completed on a second season episode in 1967 (a second LOA accompanies the Type-1). Eventually, the respective owners of the Type-1 and Type-2 Phasers learned about their counterpart, and in a detailed study the two hero components were reassembled and scrutinized in a side-by-side comparison with the only other known Hero Type-2 Phaser Pistol belonging to the highest-profile collector and top authority of original series props and costumes. The collector extensively examined the internal and external components and determined, based upon the comparison, that this Type-2 Phaser Pistol is authentic. In fact, the build tolerances between both pistols are such that the Type-1 Phasers are interchangeable and fit perfectly in both pistol bodies!

  1. Phaser

Phasers were the most common and standard directed energy weapon in the arsenal of Starfleet and several other powers. Most phasers were classified as particle weapons and fire nadion particle beams, (Star Trek: First Contact; TNG: "The Mind's Eye"; VOY: "Time and Again", "Demon") but some, like the Ferengi hand phaser, were classified as plasma weapons and fired forced plasma beams. (TNG ...

  2. Weapons in Star Trek

Phasers are common and versatile phased array pulsed energy projectile weapons, first seen in the original Star Trek series and later in almost all subsequent films and television spin-offs. Phasers range in size from small arms to starship-mounted weaponry.. Though they seem to discharge in a continuous "beam", close observation reveals that phasers actually discharge a stream of pulsed ...

  3. Star Trek Confirms the Full Potential of an Iconic Klingon Weapon

In the Star Trek universe, the Klingons are an honorbound warrior race. At times, they have been enemies of the Federation and other times staunch allies. As a species who lives for combat and glory, the Klingons have created a number of awesome and terrifying weapons, such as the disruptor (a far more lethal version of the phaser) as well as the iconic bat'leth blade.

  4. star trek

Well depends. Originally the hand held disruptor would vaporize a target, like we can see in the ST movies when a Klingon captain vaporizes the Weapons officer on the Bridge; nowadays it causes holes and burns just like phasers, so it's one of many of Star trek continuity and technology errors. -

  5. Phase cannon

A phase cannon was a phase-modulated directed energy cannon weapon, a type of particle weapon which served as a successor to plasma cannons and as a precursor to the phaser of the 23rd and 24th centuries. The prototypes of ship-mounted phase cannons were first introduced by Starfleet in the mid-22nd century, designed as the primary defense of NX-class starships and serving as a supplement for ...

  6. Klingon disruptor

The Klingon disruptor was the standard hand-held disruptor weapon used by Klingons. With variations of the weapon existing throughout the 22nd, 23rd, and 24th centuries, they were the standard issue alternative to the Klingon disruptor rifle. In the Broken Bow Incident of 2151, the Klingon courier Klaang used his disruptor to destroy a corn silo housing two Suliban agents in Broken Bow ...

  7. What happened to Chekov's confiscated phaser and communicator in Star

In the Star Trek: The Voyage Home, Chekov is captured after sneaking on board the USS Enterprise.During his interrogation we see three items of 23rd century origin: Chekov's Starfleet ID; Phaser; Communicator; I suspect that the phaser and communicator were actually of Klingon origin and came from the Bounty.

By Ian Kisluk. The Klingon D7 Class Battle Cruiser was the pinnacle of combat warships in the 23rd Century. 10. Klingons, Romulans, Cardassians... Everybody uses Disruptors. The

Interestingly, there are a few references to Cardassians using phaser weapons too - it appears they use both phaser and disruptor technology. Generally disruptors are depicted as less sophisticated weapons than phasers - they don't have multiple settings or a wide beam attack.

  11. A Collector's Trek #4: Remco Toys Of The 1970's

  13. Klingon disruptor

The Klingon disruptor was an evolving standard for hand-held weapons, disruptor devices used by the Klingons for a number of centuries. 19. Klingon Disruptors and Romulan Plasma Disruptors :: Star Trek: Infinite

I came from a SFB, F&E background for most of my star trek lore so the phasers don't bother me because every faction used a phaser of some type. It's weird for me seeing romulans have disruptors and not plasmas. In the games I played the Feds and tholians used photons, romulans used plasma and klingons used disruptors for their torpedoes.
