Photography experts pick their favourite locations for stunning sunsets and sunrises in Birmingham

We have put together a guide of where you can see some dramatic brumsets and brumrises (i stole this) in our fair city.  we also asked local photography gurus  tim cornbill  and  verity milligan  to recommend some of their favourite locations for a great photo (interspersed with our laymen choices) - you’ll see some of the fantastic results in their work below..

http://vb.oneblackbear.com/m/72fc3c/630.jpg

Unless you are a keen photographer / whimsical you're probably going to find it a struggle to get up for sunrise! Having said that the majesty of a beautiful sunset is well worth the initial pain - here are our picks…

Eastside City Park

(Obviously) – The clues in the name people – East is where the sun rises.  This city centre park is a good choice to set up camp for a great sunrise photo – the industrial backdrop of Digbeth will add some gravitas to your image. Verity has taken this sunrise shot looking over Digbeth…

http://vb.oneblackbear.com/m/3d37a3/630.jpg

This shot is from the top of Moat Lane car park. It’s a little difficult to get the same shot these days as the vantage point is obscured by fencing, but if you can shoot through the railings, especially at dawn, the ‘Hundred Thousands Welcomes’ sign adds some great foreground to the sprawling expense of Digbeth behind. - Verity Milligan

Edgbaston reservoir.

Tim recommends this location as it has a fantastic panoramic view of the Birmingham skyline.

http://vb.oneblackbear.com/m/bea9ce/630.jpg

Bullring, looking past St Martin’s and Selfridges

Both Tim and Verity have said that this location offers a great vantage point for a sunrise.  The backdrop of St Martin’s church makes for an ideal photo.  You can also get lovely effects off Selfridges spun aluminium discs, as seen in Verity’s picture here.

http://vb.oneblackbear.com/m/02c1ab/630.jpg

Probably one of Brum’s most iconic buildings, the architecture is unmistakable and contrasts with the classical feel of St Martin’s in the Bullring. During the deep mid-winter, the sun rises between the two (at a fairly reasonable hour as well), illuminating both. This shot was taken on a foggy morning as the weather lifted and the sun broke through. - Verity Milligan

Grand central car park.

Another of Mr Cornbill’s recommendations, he pointed out that many of the city centre car parks are great locations for photographers – they’re also convenient for parking.

http://vb.oneblackbear.com/m/8ddfa3/630.jpg

At Visit Birmingham HQ, dusk is one of our favourite parts of the day – and Birmingham looks especially splendid at this time. In the photography & film industries dusk is known as the magic hour, as it looks so gosh darn beautiful (see any Terrence Malick film for examples of this in practice).

The Library of Birmingham

The Library’s outdoor terrace is a fantastic location to see the sun drop behind Broad Street – unfortunately it closes at 7pm so unless you’re Spider-Man you’ll have trouble – Verity took this one...

http://vb.oneblackbear.com/m/fd5af5/630.jpg

The Library of Birmingham provides some excellent opportunities at sunset, provided you catch it at the right time of year. During those short winter days, it’s worth a trip up to the two gardens to catch the last cool rays of the day. Not only do you have the busyness of Centenary Square, but the architecture of the library also offers some marvellous opportunities. - Verity Milligan

Rotunda staying cool.

We were lucky enough to spend an evening once atop this iconic venue and the views of both the sunset and sunrise were magnificent.  Make sure you’re on the right side of the building or you will be cursing! As you can see by the wonk – this was not taken by our professionals.

http://vb.oneblackbear.com/m/7cf5fd/630.jpg

Ok, here's a much better one taken by Verity....

http://vb.oneblackbear.com/m/8080c3/630.jpg

Wow. This place. I appreciate that it’s a bit of a treat, and I’ve been lucky enough to appreciate the view from their penthouse more than once, but when you experience the city from this height, you never see it the same way again. The light drapes over the juxtaposing architecture of our fair city, and just for a moment you experience the urban landscape as a whole. - Verity Milligan

Birmingham museum & art gallery.

Of course you can always catch a fantasic sunrise or sunset at any time of the day in  Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery  - here is Oil Painting - Le Pont Boieldieu à Rouen, Soleil Couchant [The Pont Boieldieu at Sunset]

http://vb.oneblackbear.com/m/15ee3d/630.jpg

Newhall Street

One of Tim’s recommendations  - The sun sets right at the end of Newhall Street and lights up the entire location in a fantastic display of colour. It's such a great spot that Tim even hosted an event called  #BrumHenge  here with the sole purpose of catching the sunset.

http://vb.oneblackbear.com/m/36b573/630.jpg

Have we missed anywhere? Did we have the sun in our eyes? Probably! Post your suggestions and photos using  #WMexperiences

To see some more of the fantastic work by our photography experts see here…

Staying Cool at Rotunda

Four and five star apartments on the top 2 floors of the city’s newly refurbished, iconic Rotunda, offer amazing views, great design and maximum comfort in the heart of the city centre, just 2 minutes from Selfridges and New Street Station.

Selfridges Birmingham

Selfridges Birmingham, is a branch of one of Britain’s most famous and luxurious shops. It sells just about everything from shoes to sunglasses and sweets to stationery.

Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery

Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery is currently closed for essential infrastructure works. BMAG is planned to re-open to visitors in 2024 – the exact date is to be confirmed.

Bullring & Grand Central

The centre is the largest shopping destination in the city welcoming thousands of visitors every week. Bullring & Grand Central offers a range of brands including the iconic Selfridges as well as LEGO, H&M Home, MAC and Arket.

Birmingham Sunrise, Sunset and The Golden Hour

There are a few options for good places in Birmingham to watch: the sunrise or sunset. However, there are more places that benefit from the lights of the golden hour. The sun at the beginning and end of the day creates some great lighting, hence the name of the golden hour. A nickname locally for these is Brumrise and Brumset, particularly on social media.

Chaimberlain Clock at Sunset

The sun, being low in the sky, changes the appearance of many of the Birmingham buildings. The first and last hour of daylight is the best to take photographs in any city.

Sunrise & Sunset timings

The best way to check sunrise and sunset times is to ask Google . Identifying a great day to see the low suns is more tricky. In Birmingham, it relies on the British weather, which is unpredictable. Clear skies or those marked with partial cloud cover often deliver the best results.

Locations to see Sunrise in Birmingham

The best places in the city I have found for watching the sunrise or early golden hour are.

St Martin in The Bullring Church

Near to the Bull Ring Shopping Centre is St Martin’s Church, the best sport for sunrise in the city. Above this is a terrace raised above the church. The gap between the bullring building and the church is a popular spot for sunrise photographers, and it delivers.

St Martins in the Bullring at Sunrise

Selfridges Car Park in The City Centre

Depending on opening hours, Selfridges’ car park is a delightful spot to watch the sun come out to play. During the summer, the timings may mean that this is not accessible, so check their hours before departing.

Digbeth from above at sunrise.

Jewellery Quarter

There are a few suitable spots in the Jewellery Quarter area of the city.

Ludgate Hill at Sunrise

Birmingham City Centre

Some other hotspots for hunting in the morning sun.

Paradise Circus

Where to see Sunset in Birmingham?

The more fruitful spots to take the camera to get some sunset shots.

The Jewellery Quarter & Hockley

There are various suitable spots in the Jewellery Quarter area where the sky is great towards the end of the day. My particular favourites are near to the Chamberlin Clock and Warstone Lane cemetery. The side roads facing west also often have great colouring, particularly in the summer months.

Jewellery Quarter Sunset

Sunsets in The City Centre

The central areas on the hill near Colmore Row, Victoria Square and Centenary Square are nice at sunset. Coupled with the interesting architecture, these sometimes make for great photography subjects.

Sunset at St Philips Cathedral Birmingham

Edgbaston Reservoir

As well as being a great place for a walk or nature spotting, Edgbaston Reservoir is fantastic at sunset. The best places to observe this is at the east end of the lake towards the Sailing Club or Peace Pagoda.

Sailing Club Sunny Day

Digbeth & Canals

The Digbeth Branch canal and a few sites in Digbeth are nice at sunset. Also, the views from trains coming over the viaducts in the city can be beautiful.

Sunset over Digbeth

Cannon Hill Park

The most popular park in the city is a brilliant spot for observing the sun going down. An advantage is that Cannon Hill Park has some great benches to sit on and watch the show.

Second Boer War Monument

The New Main Line

Walking along the New Main Line Canal just outside Birmingham is a fantastic sunset spot.

Sunset on the New Main Line Canal

Leasowes Park Halesowen

Just outside of Birmingham, near Halesowen, is Leasowes Park , a beautiful place for a walk in the countryside. This is pretty simple to get to on the National Express X9 or X10 routes from the city centre.

Lapal Canal at Sunset

The banks of the Lapal Canal are a brilliant spot to view the sun setting or just be at golden hour. During this time, the wildfowl also seems to come to life. The tree-lined banks and reed beds certainly add a dimension to the low sun, too.

The Orchard at Leasowes Park ay Sunset

There are many other places on the high ground in the park to enjoy the spectacle. One with seats and a quiet spot is in the Memorial Orchard.

Places enhanced by the Golden Hour in Birmingham

Parts of Birmingham that are very photogenic during the golden hour.

Some gorgeous shots. Great idea for a blog post – I particularly like the Bullring building swathed in golden sunlight! 👌

A great blog with some stunning shots.

I love this post idea – I haven’t seen anything like it. I wish I’d seen it before I was in Brum for the games this summer! I’ll have to save it for when I’m back at uni in the UK. Particularly love that photo on the footbridge

68 Fun & Unusual Things to Do in Birmingham, Alabama

fun things to do in Birmingham, Alabama

Steeped in rich Civil War-era history, Alabama’s largest metropolitan region takes visitors on a fascinating, sobering, and eye-opening journey that few other Southern cities can match.

However, despite its checkered past, Birmingham is now thrusting itself back into the tourism limelight, and donning the wondrous Magic City moniker which once made it famous.

As any former visitor (or local) will attest, this lively metropolis is full of surprises: from its roaring sports crowds and insightful museums to its stunning inner-city nature, vibrant Theatre District and proximity to the Appalachian Mountains, the selection of things to do in Birmingham is far more diverse and exciting than meets the eye.

Throw in at some of the finest motorcycle collections in history, towering statues, and a stack of happening rooftop bars and underground breweries, and you’ve found yourself a seriously worthy destination.

So, what are you waiting for? Start planning your trip today!

1 – Meet the rhinos at the Birmingham Zoo

Birmingham Zoo Alabama

A sprawling, mostly open-air animal kingdom home to over 950 animals of all shapes and sizes (from some 230 different local and international species).

The family-friendly Birmingham Zoo offers curious guests the chance to see some of the planet’s most fascinating creatures up close and in person.

This attraction is great for all ages, with something to see at every turn (including a rhino habitat, an aviary featuring hundreds of colorful birds, and even a petting zoo).

If your timing is right, on specific days (check the website), the zoo puts on magical Glow Wild nights where animal-shaped lanterns are released into the sky!

2 – Marvel at the Birmingham Museum of Art

Birmingham Museum of Art, Alabama

Sitting in the heart of the city in front of Lynn Park, The Birmingham Museum of Art is a wonderful place for anyone who enjoys the fine arts – be that paintings, sculptures, photography, or ancient relics.

Spread across multiple floors and featuring a quaint garden and cozy cafe, the museum displays over 24,000 works in its permanent collection, including an impressive selection of paintings ranging from impressionism to renaissance and contemporary, as well as extensive collections representing a diverse range of cultures and time periods (don’t miss the Pre-Columbian masks).

Best of all, admission is free! However, donations are certainly appreciated.

3 – Walk around at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens

sunrise tours birmingham

When you’re looking for things to do in Birmingham, don’t skip over the botanical gardens .

These lush, colorful gardens offer far more than just thousands of blooming flowers and two dozen themed zones (as well as outdoor fountains and winding pathways).

You can take insightful classes, join an expert-led walking tour, explore the on-site Art Gallery, enjoy events such as Earth Day, and plenty more!

It’s free to roam around, 7 days a week, and thanks to the location at the foot of Red Mountain, there’s no shortage of nearby outdoorsy activities to follow suit.

4 – Watch a NASCAR race at the Talladega Superspeedway

sunrise tours birmingham

Any true motorhead can’t pass up the opportunity to buckle up for the high-octane NASCAR experience.

Here, at the infamous Talladega Speedway (which is less than an hour from Birmingham), you can whiz around the race track at speeds as fast as 165 mph and feel what it’s like to be a real-life Nascar champion.

With these packages, you can ride shotgun drive alongside a professional driver (hold on tight!) or take the wheel yourself. Either way, you’re in for a wild ride.

If you prefer to watch the pros racing, book your tickets now.

  • Talladega Superspeedway tickets

5 – Explore the McWane Science Center

sunrise tours birmingham

Fun, interactive, and sneakily educational for kids and adults alike, the non-profit McWane Science Center dishes up entertainment in spades.

From the awe-inspiring aquarium (don’t miss the Shark & Ray Tank) to the giant IMAX theater, hands-on displays, and expert-led workshops, there’s something for the whole family.

Throughout the downtown attraction, you’ll find areas dedicated to dinosaurs, tech, art, nature, and even a Bubble Room — the ideal spot to whisk away a couple of hours on a rainy day.

6 – Lounge about at The Railroad Park Foundation

sunrise tours birmingham

The 19-acre property of Railroad Park Foundation , affectionately known as Birmingham’s Living Room, is a natural oasis: it’s full of walking, has a lake to sit around (perfect for a picnic), and serves up some spectacular sunset views.

If you’re after more than a leisurely stroll or bike ride, you’ll be happy to know that the Foundation offers a multitude of classes, including exercise groups, as well as a playground, outdoor gym, and a climbing dome for the youngsters.

Or, just grab a quick cup of tea or coffee at the on-site and simply enjoy the natural surroundings!

7 – Ride fast at the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum

sunrise tours birmingham

A must for the petrolheads, the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum is home to a truly astonishing array of motorbikes: more than 1,400 motorcycles, spanning over a century of production are found here, next to the Barber Motorsports Park racetrack.

Named after George Barber himself, who was a visionary who loved the speed and thrill of a great car, notching up 63 Porsche wins under his built.

Barber started collecting sports cars that later expanded into motorcycles – and these days, the collection has grown so vast that it’s notched up the official Guinness World Record for the largest motorcycle collection in the world.

8 – Reflect on history at the Kelly Ingram Park

sunrise tours birmingham

Nestled in the heart of downtown Birmingham, Kelly Ingram Park is a 16-acre haven of green space and serenity.

But while it may seem like an ordinary park at first glance, this place has a rich, complex, and dark history that’s worth taking the time to reflect on.

A common stop on most civil rights tours (while confronting, these tours are essential when visiting) that wander through Birmingham.

The park has multiple sculptures that depict the violence and loss of the civil rights movement, including the iconic Bull Connor statue that highlights the former police commissioner’s use of attack dogs on protestors.

9 – Stroll down the Rotary Trail

sunrise tours birmingham

Once a vacant railroad track that was gathering dust, the Rotary Club has since transformed the eyesore into a marvelous greenspace trail for the locals and tourists to bike, walk, or run!

As a centennial anniversary gift to the city, the Rotary Club poured money and love into the abandoned site and greatly improved the economy and environment of the area, with the half-mile stretch now acting as a central point for many of the city’s events.

Even if you don’t walk the entire trail, a selfie in front of the 46-foot-tall sign is quintessential.

10 – Experience art at the Arlington Antebellum Home & Gardens

sunrise tours birmingham

A crowd favorite among architecture buffs, this 1840s construction serves as a stark reminder of the Greek Revival style of architecture and the style of mansion that was oh-so-common during the Civil War era.

Lush grounds and impressive architecture aside, the Arlington Antebellum Home & Gardens also serves as a museum for some of the best decorative arts pieces from the 19th Century and offers a locally-led tour to learn more about the space, its history, and its rare decorative pieces.

If tours and art aren’t exactly your thing, maybe one of their special events will be! Attend a masquerade dinner or Valentine’s day dinner for a truly unique historical experience.

11 – Catch a game at the Bartow Arena

Bartow Arena basketball games in Birmingham, Alabama

Home to the UAB Blazers men’s and women’s basketball teams as well as the volleyball team, the Bartow Arena is a great and affordable place to catch a game (or two) when in town and check out the country’s up and coming stars.

The arena seats up to 8,500 people and has been hosting games since 1988, locking horns with the likes of Lousiana State, North Texas, Rice, University of Texas San Antonio, and a whole lot more.

And with various events happening throughout the year, there’s always a chance to revel in the high-energy atmosphere.

  • Bartow Arena tickets

12 – Visit the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute

sunrise tours birmingham

As an affiliate of the Smithsonian Museum, the humbling and sobering Civil Rights Institute keeps the Birmingham Story alive, providing a fascinating insight into not only the local fight for civil rights in the 1950s and 1960s, but the continuous worldwide battle for equality and human rights.

With eye-opening exhibits on areas like Black History Month and Juneteenth, to Martin Luther King. Jr and the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing, the institute is a must for visitors and locals alike who want to gain a better understanding of how far we’ve come — as well as how far we still have to go.

Out the front, don’t miss the Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument — while a little shocking, it’s a reminder of a reality that isn’t too far in the distance.

13 – Gaze up at the Statue of Liberty Replica at Liberty Park

sunrise tours birmingham

If you’ve not had the time to visit the actual Statue of Liberty, then no problem – there’s one in Birmingham that’s 1/5th scale of the one in New York!

Clearly, the city has a thing for statues, as the 36-foot replica is one of three enormous statues in the area.

But, the difference here is that there are real gas flames in the torch that burns through the day (not even the original can claim that)

Not to mention, it’s the largest replica around – and therefore definitely worth taking a look at, if only for a few minutes as a quick stop exploring the eastern suburbs.

14 – Take a hike at Oak Mountain State Park

sunrise tours birmingham

Craving a dose of nature and an escape from big city life? At Oak Mountain State Park — a lush and diverse landscape full of waterfalls and lakes about 20 miles south of Birmingham.

There are more than enough activities to occupy you and your loved ones for hours on end: while mountain biking and hiking are the crowd favorites, thrill-seeking visitors tend to lean toward options like the BMX course, cable skiing, boat rides, or horseback riding!

After you’re exhausted with all the activity, you can head on over to the picnic area, enjoy a nice meal, and, if you’re up for it, set up camp for the night!

15 – Strap on your wings at the Southern Museum of Flight

sunrise tours birmingham

Consider yourself an aviation buff? Then the Southern Museum of Flight is the perfect place to spend an afternoon luxuriating in all things aviation.

With a wonderful collection that includes everything from WWII-era aircraft and helicopters, to rocket ships and even flying saucers (okay, maybe not that last one).

This air museum will take you through nearly 100 years worth of history – all spread across 75000 square feet of – as the Museum puts it – learning possibilities.

The Vietnam War Helicopters Exhibit is a crowd favorite, likewise the sleek A-12 Blackbird which sits on the grass outside.

16 – Watch a show at the Alabama Theatre

sunrise tours birmingham

With its grandiose auditorium and art deco design, the Alabama Theatre was built in 1927 as a luxury cinema for those who could afford it—and today, travelers can enjoy that same luxury and a rich history to boot at one of their events or shows!

As well as hosting some top theatrical performances (including popular local musicals like The Phantom), the theatre also regularly welcomes symphony orchestras and operas.

Just pick a show that tickles your fancy, buy a ticket (in advance to get the best price), and let the so-called Showplace of the South dazzle and delight.

17 – Satisfy your sweet tooth at Cookie Fix

Cookie Fix in Birmingham, Alabama

For all the sugar-lovers out there, Cookie Fix boasts three tantalizing locations in Homewood, Cahaba Heights, and Huntsville, each serving up a lip-smacking range of sweet treats that are especially good to share (or not).

From cookie cakes and cookie stacks to gift bags and sampler packs, the bakery has got you covered with a wide-ranging menu of baked goods that will be sure to leave you craving more (thank heavens for the take-home packs).

18 – Pay your respects at the Alabama Veterans Memorial Park

sunrise tours birmingham

Set up to honor all those who have fallen from the 20th century to today while serving the country, the Alabama Veterans Memorial park is a somber but peaceful place to visit, especially if you’re looking for some time away from the hustle and bustle of downtown.

20 minutes east of Downtown, the Park features calming walking trails, powerful memorial statues, and the Hall of Honor temple, which displays over 11,000 names of 11,000 Alabamians who’ve sacrificed their lives in battle.

While many visitors simply pop by and explore for a half-hour or so, those looking to learn a little more about local history can opt for a guided tour or visit on Memorial Day to watch the Step-Stone ceremony.

19 – Spend some time at the Vulcan Park and Museum

sunrise tours birmingham

10 movie and TV stars who brought concert tours to Birmingham

For some famous actors, film and TV acclaim simply isn’t enough. These stars moonlight as musicians, typically drawing enthusiastic crowds to their concerts — playing rock, folk, jazz, pop, R&B or bluegrass with varying degrees of success. In many cases, fans simply want to see a celebrity on stage, no matter what the level of music skill. (And hey, we’re perfectly fine with that.) Sometimes, though, an actor will display real talent as a singer or instrumentalist, earning extra applause.

Here are 10 well-known actors who’ve brought their concert tours to Birmingham, showcasing a passion for music. Although Johnny Depp has yet to perform here with Hollywood Vampires , and Keanu Reeves has been no closer than Atlanta with Dogstar, some big names have played in the Magic City in recent years. Let’s take a look.

Classic Haleakala Sunrise Tour

On Skyline’s Haleakala Sunrise Tour, experience edge-of-the-world views open up in all directions while the early sunlight casts hues of natural light onto Haleakala crater floor. Be there when Haleakala National Park awakens with the rising sun near the summit of Haleakalā.  The heavenly beauty of the crater at sunrise is why ancient Hawaiians believed this area of the mountaintop was the 'realm of the gods', or 'wao akua'. Haleakala National Park is the #1 visitor attraction on Maui, and Skyline’s Haleakala Sunrise tour is the #1 tour on Maui.
