Jackson Hole & Grand Teton N.P. Visitor Guide

Take a wildlife tour in jackson hole and grand teton national park.

S potting wildlife is high on the list of things a visitor to Jackson Hole wants to do. Whether it’s moose, bison, bear, elk, or a bald eagle, seeing one or more of these wild animals in their native habitat is exciting and memorable.

One of the best ways to view wildlife in Grand Teton National Park is with an experienced and trained nature guide, and perhaps the best time to take a tour is at the start of your vacation. Jackson Hole’s oldest safari provider is Teton Science Schools’ Wildlife Expeditions.

Educationally-Focused Outfitter

Wildlife Expeditions is Jackson Hole’s original wildlife tour operator, offering private half-, full- and multi-day excursions in Jackson Hole, Grand Teton and Yellowstone national parks as well as the Bridger-Teton National Forest.

The more than 20-year-old outfitter is part of Teton Science Schools , a nonprofit organization founded in 1967 that aims to connect people, nature and place through education, science and stewardship. Wildlife Expeditions—the only nonprofit tour provider in the valley—strives to replicate the science school's mission. Proceeds from wildlife tours go right back into Teton Science School's programs as well as scholarships.

The tours offered are both fun and educational.

Trips include the use of binoculars and spotting scopes, professional field guidebooks for adults and kids and an interactive specimen kit containing antlers, horns, animal pelts and skulls, and more.

The most popular tours are the four-hour sunrise and sunset offerings, when the animals tend to be more active, and the light on the Tetons and the horizon makes for spectacular photo opportunities.

One of the animals visitors say they would like to see are wolves. Spotting wolves out on the National Elk Refuge is not easy with the naked eye, says Sarah Ernst, wildlife biologist with Wildlife Expeditions.

“They are actually some of the easiest animals to pick out against the snow, but not always out on the expanse of the refuge,” Ernst said recently during a morning tour.

The spotting scope Ernst set up in the parking lot of the National Museum of Wildlife Art—which looks out on the refuge—zoomed in across the snow-covered refuge as the frozen frost of morning lingered low in the sky. One pack of five wolves, some black and some grey, was slowly making its way across the ridge of Miller Butte.

No sooner had the wolves disappeared over the butte than another six were spotted taking up the rear, their long legs moving effortlessly through the deep snow toward the top of the hill.

Debbie Lewis, of Orlando, Florida, one of the visitors on tour, said she had never seen wolves in all of the years she has been coming from the south to take these wildlife tours with Teton Science Schools.

“This is amazing,” she said. “I have been coming up here for four years and have never seen one.”

Trained Biologists as Guides

The experienced naturalists who guide these interpretive tours are men and women with bachelor's—and in some cases, master's—degrees in biology, zoology, wildlife conservation and environmental sciences, among others.

The biologists are passionate about educating their guests about the Greater Yellowstone area's landscape, its wildlife and how it all comes together.

Their goal is also to make sure you get the most out of your wildlife tour. The Wildlife Discovery Expedition , an eight-hour tour, allows for a little less vehicle time and more time spent outside, looking at animals and birds in their native habitat with both the naked eye and through the scopes.

Beyond seeing wildlife, the naturalists will also discuss what political issues are going on regarding animals in the wild as well as conservation issues.

Even after they’re familiar with Jackson Hole, visitors to our valley swear by the guided expeditions.

“I keep doing the Teton Science Schools tours because I like the passion the biologists and tour guides have about the animals, the ecosystem and the history here,” Lewis said. “I never tire of their knowledge and stories.”

Into the Wild in State-of-the-Art Vans

Wildlife Expeditions’ custom, safari-style vans feature three roof hatches and large sliding side windows for safe, ethical and unobstructed wildlife viewing. There is room inside the van for a maximum of just seven passengers—this allows for an intimate experience with the biologists.

And everybody gets his or her own window seat!

Also on board are complimentary coffee, tea, hot cocoa, soft drinks and snacks.

Families with younger kids are encouraged to take the sunset tours, especially in summer when the days may already be filled with other activities. In winter, when you might want to take a day off from the slopes, an all-day Yellowstone tour via snowcoach is a special treat.

People interested in more in-depth wildlife discovery will find that a full-day trip allows the guide the flexibility to visit other ends of the valley and—depending upon the time of year—different parts of Grand Teton National Park.

“I would say my three tips for watching wildlife in the winter are these: No. 1, dress warmly; No. 2, have good optics; and No. 3, be patient,” Ernst says.

“Keep watching the wildlife and wait for something to happen. Something wonderful almost always does.”

Wildlife Expeditions offers complimentary pick-up and drop-off at your hotel in Jackson or out in Teton Village. Arrangements can also be made to meet at the Home Ranch public parking lot in downtown Jackson off the Town Square.

Tour prices start at $139 per person for half-day tours and $235 for full-day expeditions. For information and to book a tour, call 877-404-6626, or visit wildlifeexpeditions.org.

The expedition arm of Teton Science Schools has provided us the perfect mix of adventure and education. We’ve vacationed here 3 times, and have taken 3 tours. Added bonus to have Kevin as your guide. He’s captivating as he brings history, geology, ecology, and botany to life. He’s accommodating to your needs and is a great guide to spend your day with. If Kevin and the Teton Science Schools were available at all of our national park vacations, we’d definitely work with them over and over!

The Best Tour of Yellowstone and Grand Teton Ever! March 2023 This was honestly the best tour of Yellowstone and Grand Teton ever. My group was lucky to have one of the best tour guides I have ever seen, Miles! He was so nice and you could tell he really loved his job and I learned so much that day. Visited the Jackson Hole area in July of 2023. We decided to use TSS for a day tour of the Grand Teton park. We had a rather large group which we separated into two large vans. Vans were clean, air conditioned and have roof hatches for sightseeing. Our tour guides for the day were Kevin and Tyler. Both awesome, friendly, and full of knowledge of both the area and animals encountered. The tour provided us with a morning coffee and granola bars plus binoculars to use for the day. Of course there was plenty of beautiful sites but there was also tons of animals (check out my pics for some of the sites/animals). Definitely got our money worth. We stopped at Jackson Lake for lunch and ate sandwiches provided by TSS. Beautiful. If you're looking for a tour and in the area I highly recommend TSS. They picked us up at 6am and drop off was just after 2pm (at the hotel). Things went smooth and easy . Check them out.

12/15/2020 - Yellowstone 12 hr tour with Jeff Mulligan. My hubby and I booked an all day tour and had a blast. Jeff took care of us the whole day with endless drinks , coffee, hot chocolate, snacks. He picked us up 630am and dropped us off 12 hours later. We had a breakfast burrito to go from Cowboy coffee and started our drive from Jackson through Grand Teton National Park to Flagg Ranch. We transfer from a van to a snow coach and headed up to Old Faithful. We got to see old Faithful in its glory! We also did a hike around the geysers and hot springs. We had many stops including west thumb, Lewis lake, Kepler cascade, Moose falls. Many photo opportunities throughout the whole trip. Jeff was very knowledgeable and explained the History of Jackson & grand Teton, Geology of rocks and trees The 1988 fires, Ecosystems, History of Yellowstone. My takeaway from the trip is all of our ecosystem is entwined and connected. If there is a small disruption in the food chain it can severely affect animals small to big. Unfortunately we didn't witness much animals on this trip. It was windy and snowy the whole day. It was expected to clear up but it didn't. We saw Trumpeter swans, 1 Bison, ravens, 1 Squirrel and a few Mountain chickadees. That's was it but it's nature and you never know what you will see. Today was just not one of those days. I don't discourage anybody, get out there in nature as much as you can because everyday is different.

We can't say enough about Sarah and our amazing first tour and her first of the season. The other reviews are incredibly accurate. Sarah could pick out a beautiful wolf pack on one side of a ridge and then had us follow them to the other sIde in our comfortable Mercedes van. She helped us take wonderful photos and videos of the wolves and 4 elk sunning themselves on the side of a hillside. Each time we remarked, "how in the world did you see that". The whole tour with Sarah was fact filled and a marvel. If in Jackson, I highly recommend this professional company and tour. Especially with Sarah.

The full day wildlife tour with Bobby was fantastic. In addition to his amazing talent at spotting wildlife, he also was so knowledgeable about wildlife, birds and the area. It was a wonderful day and we saw so much -- Bald Eagles, Big Horn sheep, bison, elk, Trumpeter Swans, moose, and more! We highly recommend Bobby Pfeiffer and TTS.

Photo of Jodi W.

Our family of six took a private Grand Teton Sunrise Tour with Sarah, and it was top notch! We saw a weasel, bull elk, mule deer, moose (including a calf), prong horn, bison (including calves), a hawk, and mountain climbers atop Teton. The Sprinter van with hatch roof openings was both comfortable and made for great wildlife views. Sarah navigated it expertly through the park. (An additional park entry fee for 'commercial' access was assessed on top of the park pass that we had already purchased, so do be prepared for that.) At stops, Sarah positioned telescopes for close-up views. We appreciated the beverages and snacks. And, the attention to safety, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. But, most of all, we enjoyed Sarah's narrating. She has an abundance of knowledge about the area and related to each member of our group, keeping us engaged the entire trip. Highly recommend!

Photo of Deborah T.

Today we did the all day tour our guide Kevin Taylor was outstanding. He not only found us moose, bear, pronghorn and bison but he taught us a lot about the animals themselves. He also provided information about the birds we saw which included eagle, osprey, sandhill cranes, ducks and geese but also the plants and trees. I would highly recommend the all day tour to increase your chance of seeing wildlife because we weren't rushed to go from place to place we could stay a while and just soak in nature. Lunch was excellent and the picnic spot by the lake was perfect.

The full package of documents is handed over to the Hungarian customer, MVM Paks Ltd, for further licensing of the new fuel by the national nuclear power regulator, Tvel said.

The first fuel assemblies have also passed acceptance testing at Tvel's Elemash Machine-building plant in Elektrostal, Moscow region.

The new modification of VVER-440 second generation fuel increases the efficiency of fuel usage and advances the economic performance of the power plant operation, Tvel said.

The engineering contract for development of the new VVER-440 fuel was signed in late 2017. The development and validation work involved a number of Russian enterprises, including OKB Gidropress (a part of Rosatom machine-building division Atomenergomash), Bochvar Institute (material science research facility of TVEL Fuel Company), Elemash Machine-building plant and Kurchatov Institute national research center. At the site of OKB Gidropress research and experiment facility, the new fuel passed a range of hydraulic, longevity and vibration tests .

The first consignment of the modified fuel will be delivered to Paks nuclear power plant later this year. The four-unit Paks nuclear plant, which entered operation between 1982 and 1987 currently operate on a 15-month fuel cycle and supply around 50% of Hungary's electricity.
