What is the TfL Journey Planner and how to use it?

With more rail, tube, and bus strikes potentially on the horizon, getting around London can prove troublesome during industrial action. However, there are ways to plan your journey effectively in advance to help minimise disruption.

The latest tube maps (including stations that avoid stairs, accept cycles, and more) are published on the TfL.go.UK website for when services are running.

However, for smartphone users, the official TfL Go app helps you plan tube, bus, and rail journeys around the capital (including an update for the newly opened Elizabeth line ) and live reports on service disruption across London.

If, for any reason, you are unable to access the app, the TfL Journey Planner is also available via the browser on your PC, laptop, phone, and more.

What is the TfL Journey Planner?

The TfL Journey Planner is a website run by Transport for London that works similarly to the National Rail Enquiries page. It allows you to search and plan your journeys across London in advance. 

However, the journey planner seeks to be an all-encompassing solution for transport that goes beyond rail travel.

For example, it will show you options for cycling, cycle hire, bus routes, and more. The site also gives you walking routes, with the option to view written directions or to open the path in Google maps.

The app encourages users to walk or cycle where possible and also gives the option to discover quieter times to travel, which can be particularly useful if you are not in a rush to make your trip.

Beginning on the TfL Journey Planner homepage , you can input your potential journey details based on geographical locations, underground stations, bus stops, and more.

To get the latest news from the capital visit Metro.co.uk's London news hub .

This allows you to pinpoint your starting place and destination. The site also gives you the option to pick from any journeys you’ve recently entered. Any updates or strike action will also be listed in a yellow banner at the top of the homepage.

The default allows you to plan a journey departing now, but you can alter the departure time if you are planning your trip further in advance.  

Once you have entered your journey details, you’ll be presented with options like ‘cycling and other’ (which will include cycle hire and walking), ‘fastest by public transport and ‘Bus only’, with the option to amend your journey details, look at services later or earlier in the day and even find nearby taxi ranks.

London Public Transport Journey Planners

These are the best apps and tools to plan a journey by public transport in London. We recommend using the options listed below instead of Google to plan a journey.

Citymapper is the most comprehensive public transport planning app for London.

It’s available online or as a free app for ios or android . The online version is now rather limited. The app is much better.

The route planner shows all transport options including cycling, walking and local trains.

The adult Pay as you go Oyster card/contactless fares for each journey are also shown. This make it easy to find the cheapest route.

Transport for London’s TfL Go app is a sleek design and easy to use . It’s the easiest app to find and live departures for underground trains and buses.

It also has a route planner showing options for

• fastest route
• an alternative route (usually bus)

Select ‘Status’ for delay information. You are then able to see if there are any problems on a particular train or underground line.

It defaults to an excellent live tube map, which finds your closest tube station. Click on the underground station, then the name of the station to get the times of the next tube trains.

Click on ‘bus stops’ to see times of the next buses from bus stops near you.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t give fare information. But it’s recommended if you don’t need to know the fare.

Transport for London’s online journey planner

Transport for London’s online Journey Planner shows the quickest way from A to B.

It’s possible to choose bus/tube/train only routes. It also gives you the Pay as you go Oyster peak/contactless and off-peak fares.

Do bear in mind that the default is the quickest route, which is not always the cheapest. For example, to Heathrow Airport:

• under ‘Edit preferences’ deselect ‘National Rail’ to exclude the expensive Heathrow Express train.
• Deselect ‘Elizabeth line’ if you want to exclude that as well.

Early morning or late-night journeys

To be somewhere at a specific time, especially if it’s in the morning or late at night, use the TfL Journey Planner

Mobility issues

If you have mobility issues, you can narrow down your search options to find the best route with:

• Escalators but not stairs
• Stairs but not escalators
• Step-free access to platforms
• Full step-free access

If you just need a tube map and don’t want to use an app, download a pdf tube map to your device.

Can I use the Journey Planner for TfL services?

Underground trains.

In the event that your trip requires a Tube journey between two mainline railway stations, the Journey Planner will factor in a Tube journey into the total journey time. However, you cannot purchase London Underground tickets on Trainline.

Overground trains

The Journey Planner allows you to check departure times and buy tickets for London Overground services. Simply enter your departure and arrival stations and we’ll do the rest.

TfL this weekend May 3 to 5: Underground, Overground and Elizabeth line disruption

Here is the full list of planned TfL service changes this weekend, May 3 to 5.

Londoners travelling into the capital this weekend could be faced with disruption due to closures on Tube and rail services.

Transport for London (TfL) has asked Londoners to check before they travel.

To get the most latest updates on the Underground, DLR and Overground you can use the TfL app or website.

London Underground

Oxford circus station strike.

From 10pm on Friday 3 until 6am on Sunday May 5, Oxford Circus station may need to close at short notice due to RMT strike action.

Customers should plan ahead and check before they travel for the latest information on how services are running.

Central line

Saturday May 4

Trains will not stop at Notting Hill Gate station between 1.45am and 3.15am

Use local bus routes 94, 148 or N207 to/from Queensway and Holland Park stations. This is due to track works on the station's Circle and District line platforms.

Ongoing disruption

TfL has apologised for the continued disruption on the Central line. It says engineers are working round the clock to address the issues, efforts which have “helped deliver a more reliable service, while ensuring the safety of our customers and colleagues”.

TfL asks that people plan ahead, allow more time for your journey and consider alternative routes if travelling on the Central line into or through central London.

Circle line

Saturday 4 until Monday May 6

No service between Tower Hill and Edgware Road (via Victoria)

Circle line trains will run between Hammersmith and Tower Hill via Moorgate. Use alternative Tube services or local bus routes. This is due to track works.

District line

No service between Embankment/Edgware Road and Hammersmith/Kensington (Olympia)/Wimbledon

Use alternative Tube services or local bus routes. Rail replacement buses will run between Hammersmith/Earl's Court and Wimbledon. This is due to track works.

Piccadilly line

Trains will not stop at Gloucester Road station including Night Tube services

Use local bus route 74 (N74 or N97 during Night Tube hours) to/from South Kensington or Earl's Court stations to connect with the Piccadilly line. This is due to track works.

London Overground

The following closures are due to Network Rail maintenance work.

Sunday May 5

No service between Camden Road and Stratford after 10.15pm

Use alternative Tube services or local bus routes. For Caledonian Road & Barnsbury, use local bus route 274 to/from Camden Road, or it is a short walk to/from Highbury & Islington. Rail replacement buses will run. 

No service between Highbury & Islington and Dalston Junction after 10.15pm

Use local bus route 30. Rail replacement buses will run.

Elizabeth line

Monday May 6

A Saturday service will run on the entire line

Monday 6 until Wednesday May 8

Reduced service between Paddington and Maidenhead/Heathrow T4 after 10pm each night

Trains will not be stopping at Acton Main Line, West Ealing and Hanwell after 11pm each night. This is due to Network Rail track renewal works.

No service between Westferry/Poplar and Lewisham

Use alternative Tube or Southeastern rail services, or local bus routes. Rail replacement buses will run between Westferry and Island Gardens, and between Canada Water bus station and Lewisham.

London Trams

Sunday 5 until Thursday May 9

Planned strike action on London Trams network

If the strike action goes ahead:

A normal service is expected on Sunday.

Between Monday 6 and Wednesday May 8:  

No service is expected before 7am or after 6pm each day

Between 7am and 6pm each day, services will only operate between:

• Wimbledon and Reeves Corner
• East Croydon and Beckenham Junction/New Addington

There will be no service through Croydon town centre, or to/from Elmers End on these days

Services are expected to start later than normal on Thursday 9 May, with possible disruption throughout the day.

TfL has asked customers to plan ahead, allow more time for your journey and check before you travel.

Buses and roads

Pembroke road.

Until 11.59pm on Saturday May 18, Pembroke Road will be closed in both directions at the junction of Warwick Road. Plan ahead and allow more time for your journey.

Thursday May 2

From 6.30pm until 10.30pm, the O2 Arena will host A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie in concert. Large crowds and increased traffic levels are expected before and after the event. 

Stamford Bridge stadium

From 6pm until 10pm, Stamford Bridge will be hosting a football match between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, with kick off at 7.30pm. Large crowds and increased traffic levels are expected before and after the match.

Friday May 3

From 6.30pm until 10.30pm, the O2 Arena will host Jo Koy. Large crowds and increased traffic levels are expected before and after the event. 

Drumsheds, Tottenham Hale

From 12pm until 10.30pm, a concert will take place at Drumsheds. Large crowds are expected at the beginning and end of the event.

Twickenham Stadium

From 1pm until 7pm, Twickenham Stadium will host the Army vs Navy rugby matches, with the first game kicking off at 2pm and the second kicking off at 4.45pm. Large crowds and increased traffic levels are expected before and after each match.

From 6.30pm until 10.30pm, the O2 Arena will host Peter Kay Live. Large crowds and increased traffic levels are expected before and after the event. 

Trafalgar Square

From 12pm until 3pm, a demonstration will take place at Trafalgar Square. Large crowds are expected. 

From 9pm on Friday 10 until 6am on Monday May 13, the M25 will be closed in both directions between junctions 9 and 10. This is so that National Highways can carry out major motorway works. 

During this closure, long delays are expected in Chessington, Epsom and Tadworth. Drivers should avoid driving through the area and consider alternative options. 

If you have to drive, allow more time for your journey, consider alternative routes and check before you travel. For more information, visit the National Highways website. 

Edgware bus station and Station Road

From 9pm until 5am each night, expect delays and diversions on bus routes that normally stop along Station Road in Edgware or at Edgware bus station. This is due to Thames Water works on Station Road between the A5 High Street and Hale Lane.

The bus station will remain open, but your journey may take longer as only one lane will be available to enter and exit the bus station. 

Stops A and B on Station Road will be closed between 9pm and 5am each night on Friday 10 and Saturday May 11, while stops H, L and K on Station Road will be closed from Saturday 11 until Monday May 13.

Train strikes in May 2024: Full list of dates and lines affected this week

Rail lines are set for disruption in the week following the first May bank holiday as train drivers at 16 rail companies strike on different days.

Train drivers will stage a fresh wave of strikes and overtime bans this week, causing disruption to the rail network.

The strikes are part of a long-running dispute over pay.

Members of Aslef union at 16 rail companies will walk out on different days from 7 to 9 May.

Additionally, all members will refuse to work any overtime from 6 May to 11 May.

Here is a full list of the services affected by strikes and when.

Rail strike dates

Tuesday 7 May

Strikes will affect c2c, Greater Anglia, GTR Great Northern Thameslink, Southeastern, Southern, Gatwick Express and South Western Railway.

Wednesday 8 May

Strikes will affect Avanti West Coast, London Northwestern Railway, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, Great Western Railway and West Midlands Trains.

Thursday 9 May

Strikes will affect LNER, Northern Trains and TransPennine Express.

Overtime ban dates

From Monday 6 May to Saturday 11 May union members will not work overtime.

Overtime bans, an action short of a strike, means some services may not be running or may be reduced as drivers refuse to work their rest days.

People are advised to check before they travel, as some areas may have no service.

How do strikes and overtime bans affect services?

Strikes tend to mean services on lines where members are participating are extremely affected or cancelled entirely, whereas overtime bans often lead to reduced services.

Are there strikes on the Tube too?

There have been regular strikes on London Underground too recently, and while there aren't any planned walkouts for drivers, customer service managers refused to work overtime between 29 April and 5 May.

This action followed strike action taken by the same workers on 10 April, which the TSSA union said had a "real impact" with "many stations shut at short notice" - something TfL denies, saying instead that the action "closed a handful of stations", with most closures "not lasting the whole day".

The TSSA says it is "extremely concerned" about TfL's 'Stations Changes' proposals.

"We have made it clear that our union will not accept the continued threats to our members' roles, locations, terms, and conditions to stand unchallenged," a TSSA spokesperson said.

"We will continue to take sustained action until London Underground is prepared to negotiate with us in good faith."

Why are the strikes still happening?

Aslef rejected a two-year offer of 4% in 2022 and another 4% this year, saying it is way below inflation, and is linked to changes in terms and conditions.

Aslef said train drivers have not had an increase in salary for five years, since their last pay deals expired in 2019.

The union said after its members voted overwhelmingly in February to continue taking industrial action, it asked the train operating companies to hold talks.

General secretary Mick Whelan said the year-old pay offer of 4% and another 4% was "dead in the water".

‘Peewee’ Jarrett’s Incredible Journey To The New York Jets

Byron ‘Peewee’ Jarrett is an Iowa kid who earned an invitation to New York Mets mini-camp after an incredible journey.

Tucked among the list of 17 New York Jets undrafted free agents for this weekend’s mini-camp was West Florida quarterback Byron Jarrett Jr.

NFL teams take chances on Division II quarterbacks at this time of year. Jarrett will have a hard time making the final 53-man roster.

But that’s nothing new for the Des Moines, Iowa, native they call “Peewee.”

Jarrett’s journey to the Jets is certainly not linear. He was good enough at Hoover High School to pass for 5,000 career yards, 50 touchdowns and set a school record for passing yards in a game with 547.

But as he told KCCI-TV in Des Moines, he didn’t receive a single Division I, II or III offer.

“Zero offers, zero stars,” Jarrett said.

Jarrett found a home with Ellsworth (Iowa) Community College, but only played seven games before tearing his labrum.

After his first surgery, he lost his grandmother. Then he needed another surgery. Before he could get back on the field COVID-19 shut down college football in 2020 and it was especially hard on junior colleges.

At his lowest point, Jarrett considered quitting football and getting a job. He found no sympathy from an unlikely source.

“I called my dad looking for, like, comfort in the situation and my dad just hung up in my face,” Jarrett said.

So, he transferred to Iowa Central in 2021 and threw for 2,704 yards and 30 touchdowns while earning NJCAA First Team All-America, ICCAC Offensive Player of the Year and First Team All-ICCAC honors. He and the Tritons went 9-2.

That season got West Florida interested. The Pensacola, Fla., based program started in 2016 and quickly became a national power, winning the Division II crown in 2019.

In 2022 Jarrett threw for 2,719 yards and 33 touchdowns, and rushed for a school-record 762 yards for a quarterback, along with nine touchdowns. The Argonauts went 12-2 and finished No. 4 in the country, losing to Ferris State in the national semifinals.

Last season he threw for 2,552 yards and 25 touchdowns, rushed for another 233 yards and three touchdowns, while UWF went 8-4 and lost in the first round of the playoffs.

On the final night of the draft, Jarrett sat with his family and took the phone call from the Jets, signing him to a UDFA contract. Now 6-4, 240 pounds, he at least he has a chance.

“I didn't know where I was gonna end up really,” he said. “I didn't know if I was gonna be drafted, undrafted, you know? I talked to every team within the past two years and you know I knew something good was gonna happen.”
