The Cactus Blossoms Announce Spring Tour Dates

They'll also join the 18th annual "Music Of" benefit on March 15 at Carnegie Hall.

Acclaimed duo The Cactus Blossoms, Minneapolis-based brothers Page Burkum and Jack Torrey, have announced a batch of spring dates, including Seattle's Wintergrass Festival later this month, headline dates in the Midwest and two sold-out shows with Sierra Ferrell.

They'll also join the 18th annual "Music Of" benefit on March 15 at Carnegie Hall, this year featuring "The Music of Paul McCartney," to benefit music education for underserved youth. In addition, the band has announced that their recent digital EP, If Not For You (Bob Dylan Songs Vol. 1), will be available for the first time on 12-inch, 45 rpm limited-edition blue marble vinyl. This special Record Store Day release will be available exclusively at participating stores starting April 22. Find stores and more at recordstoreday.com.

Whether it's The Beach Boys, Bee Gees or First Aid Kit, blood harmonies - that effortless sibling vocal blend- is the secret sauce in some of the most spine-tingling moments in popular music. The Cactus Blossoms are compelling evidence that this tradition is alive and well. Their timeless sound and original songs have earned them tour stints with artists such as Wilco, Jenny Lewis and Lucius, as well as a perfectly cast performance on David Lynch's Twin Peaks.

In 2022 they released One Day, an album of original songs that "soar gracefully due to the effortless harmonies and uncluttered arrangements" (Holler), followed by an EP covering songs by Bob Dylan.

While The Cactus Blossoms have drawn frequent comparisons to other musical siblings for their effortless blood harmonies, One Day often suggests a more soulful, '70s-inspired palette, hinting at times to Bobby Charles or JJ Cale with its playful Wurlitzer, breezy guitars, and lean, muscular percussion.

The Cactus Blossoms were featured on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert's "Late Show Me Music" series performing their Top 5 Americana Radio single "Hey Baby." The song, featuring the Minnesota-based brothers' trademark harmonies and an upbeat message, was lauded by Guitar World, The Boot, The Bluegrass Situation, The Minneapolis Star-Tribune and more.

The Cactus Blossoms Announce New LP ‘One Day’, Share 2022 Tour Dates

Minneapolis duo The Cactus Blossoms have announced the upcoming release of their new album, One Day for February 11th. The group, comprised of brothers Jack Torrey and Page Burkum, has also shared a new song “Hey Baby,” the lead track from the record. One Day will be released on February 11th, and is currently available to pre-order here .

Like much of The Cactus Blossoms’ catalog, the The steady-cruising “Hey Baby” operates on multiple levels: take it at face value and it’s a playful little track about a roadtrip in a rusty old truck. Zoom out, and there’s a deeper message about the power (or naïveté) of positive thinking. “I hope it all works out,” the brothers sing in exquisite harmony, “It always works out.”

“That idea of finding a silver lining comes up a lot on this record,” says Torrey. “It’s an acknowledgment that no matter how messed up things might be, people still want to believe in the world and find ways to feel lucky and joyful.”

While The Cactus Blossoms have drawn frequent comparisons to other musical siblings like the Everlys and Louvins over the years, One Day often suggests a more soulful, ’70s-inspired palette, hinting at times to Bobby Charles or JJ Cale with its playful Wurlitzer, breezy guitars, and lean, muscular percussion. The band’s classic country and old-school pop roots are still there, of course, but the growth and evolution underlying One Day is obvious, not only in the duo’s writing, but in their core philosophy, as well.

Lockdown hit the brothers hard. Quarantine put a sudden halt to their plans to record a new studio record, and as Minneapolis began to erupt in social and political unrest following the police killing of George Floyd, music began to seem like the least of the duo’s concerns.

“It felt like the whole world was falling apart,” says Burkum. “We had to put things on hold just so we could try to wrap our heads around everything that was happening in Minneapolis and beyond.”

As 2020 stretched on, Torrey and Burkum slowly began to regain their footing, and when it felt safe enough to get together in person, they started kicking ideas back and forth, inviting each other into their respective writing processes earlier than ever before. When it came time to record, the brothers called on longtime collaborator/engineer Alex Hall, who brought his mobile rig up from Chicago so they could cut the album quick and dirty in Burkum’s basement. They kept their circle tight for the sessions, working with their core touring band—which included both their older brother and their cousin—to capture the songs with a feel as close to the live show as possible.

“From the start, we knew we wanted to keep the instrumentation minimal and consistent across the whole album and embrace the dryness that came with recording in Page’s basement,” says Torrey. “We wanted it to sound raw.”

The Cactus Blossoms on tour for their new album "One Day"

Article contributed by propeller publicity | published on thursday, may 26, 2022.

the cactus blossoms tour dates

Americana duo The Cactus Blossoms , brothers Jack Torrey and Page Burkum, continue to tour for their acclaimed new album One Day with a series of June dates. The band was recently featured on The Late Show With Steve Colbert's "Late Show Me Music" series performing their Top 5 Americana Radio single "Hey Baby." The song, featuring the Minnesota-based brothers' trademark harmonies and an upbeat message, was lauded by Guitar World, The Boot, The Bluegrass Situation, The Minneapolis Star-Tribune and more. “That idea of finding a silver lining comes up a lot on this record,” says Torrey about the single. “It’s an acknowledgment that no matter how messed up things might be, people still want to believe in the world and find ways to feel lucky and joyful.”

Their video for next single, “Everybody” (featuring Jenny Lewis) was featured at Rolling Stone who wrote, “The song plays out like a conversation, nodding to Elvis Presley’s 'Suspicious Minds' in the opening line — 'Here we go again/Asking where I’ve been' — and then ultimately recognizing the other person’s agency and best intentions in the three-part harmonies of the chorus.” The song was picked up by Stereogum, Under The Radar, Brooklyn Vegan and others outlets.

As 2020 stretched on, Torrey and Burkum slowly began to regain their footing, and when it felt safe enough to get together in person, they started kicking ideas back and forth, inviting each other into their respective writing processes earlier than ever before. This Is When Washington, D.C. Cherry Blossoms Will Peak in 2024

Here's when all the buds are expected to bloom, according to the National Park Service.

the cactus blossoms tour dates

Courtesy of washington.org

We may be experiencing a bonus day of winter with 2024's Leap Day, but don't worry. The National Park Service (NPS) wants you to know that spring is approaching. Specifically, the NPS says Washington DC's famed cherry blossoms will peak sooner than you think.

An NPS spokesperson shared during the live unveiling of the dates that "this has been a particularly puzzling year to read the trees" due to a warmer-than-average January. And, because of this, the trees never reached dormancy, making this year a difficult one to predict. But even with that caveat, the NPS has projected the dates for the 2024 peak bloom to fall between March 23 to March 26.

Peak bloom, the NPS explained in a statement provided to Travel + Leisure , is when 70 percent or more of the trees "surrounding the Tidal Basin have opened their buds, gracing DC with those fluffy light pink blossoms."

According to the NPS, more than 3,000 cherry trees surround the Tidal Basin, a grove that began in 1912 after Tokyo's Mayor Yukio Ozaki sent a few over as a gift. The trees you'll find in the Tidal Basin include varieties of Yoshino and Kwanzan trees. This duo makes the perfect pair, as the Kwanzan trees typically bloom two weeks after the Yoshino, extending the season long enough for everyone to enjoy.

The peak bloom time in Washington DC has remained relatively stable over the last two decades, with the blooms usually hitting their high notes toward late March and early April. In 2022 and 2023, the blooms peaked just two days apart, on March 21 and March 23, respectively.

As for how to make the most of your time visiting the blooms, almost every hotel in the region has something special going on for the season. That includes Conrad Washington, DC , which is offering guests access to its Cherry Blossom Chief Concierge, aka the hotel's chief concierge Jeffrey Morgan, who is on-hand to give all his insider advice. Morgan also created the Cherry Blossom Celebration package that includes a one-hour photo session among the blooms, dinner at the hotel, and a bespoke picnic basket.

The Hilton Washington, DC National Mall The Wharf is also offering cherry blossom-themed deluxe rooms, while the Capitol Hill Hotel is giving guests a special cherry blossom welcome amenity, VIP cherry blossom turndown, access to the hotel's bike fleet, daily continental breakfast, and late check-out between all of March and April.

This year's Cherry Blossom Festival is also perfectly timed, taking place between March 20 and April 14. Guests are welcome to participate in the Pink Tie Party, which kicks off the festival on March 15, and the Bloom Kite Festival, which invites attendees to take flight with their own kites on March 30, 2024.

D.C.’s iconic cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin and National Mall are expected to hit “peak bloom” between March 23 and March 26.

The National Park Service unveiled its prediction at a news conference Thursday morning alongside the organizers of the National Cherry Blossom Festival.

Predicting peak bloom this year was tricky because of a record-warm January and fluctuating temperatures, said National Park Service Superintendent of the National Mall Jeff Reinbold.

Peak bloom is defined as the point when 70% of the blossoms on the 3,700 Yoshino cherry trees around the Tidal Basin and National Mall are open. Once the trees reach peak bloom, the blossoms can stay in their ideal state for up to 10 days based on weather conditions.

This year’s predicted peak bloom is about two weeks ahead of the average peak bloom date of April 4.

The earliest peak bloom recorded in D.C. was March 15 in 1990, according to the park service.

How peak bloom is predicted

The peak bloom date is based on long-term weather forecasts, historical records and the current appearance of the trees, Reinbold said.

“This has been a particularly puzzling year to read the trees and establish a projected date for peak bloom,” he said.

Because of unusually warm temperatures in January — Reinbold said it was the warmest January on record — the trees never reached dormancy, which is a key factor in calculating when the blooms will emerge.

In addition, the park service’s “indicator tree” is showing several different phases of bloom currently, in part because of the recent temperature swings.

How accurate are those dc cherry blossom predictions.

Predicting peak bloom is not an exact science.

Six out of the past nine years, peak bloom has arrived earlier than the park service’s prediction . Over the past decade, the only time the park service nailed the prediction was last year, when the blossoms hit peak bloom March 23. The park service had predicted peak bloom between March 22 and March 25.

Warm temperatures can speed up the process, which consists of six stages.

By this time last year, D.C.’s Yoshino cherry trees had started to bud, the first stage in the emergence of the blossoms.

What to know about the National Cherry Blossom Festival

The blooming of D.C.’s cherry trees is often considered the hallmark sign of spring in the nation’s capital, as large crowds flock to the Tidal Basin.

The monthlong National Cherry Blossom Festival, which runs from March 20-April 14, includes a series of concerts and performances on the National Mall, a kite festival on the grounds of the Washington Monument and a parade.

All told, the festival is expected to draw more than 1.5 million visitors to the city, according to acting Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development Nina Albert.

The festival is a “huge economic driver” for D.C., she said.

In April, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and the first lady are expected to pay an official visit to D.C., a spokesperson for the Japanese embassy said.

You can see all the scheduled events on the National Cherry Blossom Festival website .

Tickets for the March 23 opening ceremony are already sold out, according to Diana Mayhew, president of the festival.

The original cherry blossoms were given as a gift to D.C. by the mayor of Tokyo in 1912 and symbolize friendship between Japan and the U.S.

I've seen Blossoms 4 or 5 times but this time at Brixton Academy, they were definitely more slick with more lighting and improved sound quality. However, there is very little chat between songs but they do get the crowd on their side immediately. If you like a good indie type band then I recommend Blossoms.

Will definitely see them again. It's good to see how they are progressing.

I became aware of Blossoms about a year ago, heard a few songs on the radio but never really listened to their first album but I absolutely loved ‘I Can’t Stand It’, the first release of their new album ‘Cool Like You’ so when I saw they were performing at the O2 Forum Kentish Town I booked a couple of tickets and so glad I did.

They were sat next to us in the restaurant before the gig and they are such nice guys.

Incredibly impressed with their performance, musically and vocally they were flawless, the guitar changes were slick. I would say this is the best live performance I’ve ever seen, in 25 years of concert going. They seem to have an huge stage presence and calm maturity, I hope they go far.

Will definitely be keeping an eye out for future gigs.

DC's cherry blossom season announced: Will peak bloom come early?

Seasonal shifts and climate change affect when the trees reach peak bloom.

Cherry blossom season is almost here in the nation's capital and now residents and tourists alike can mark their calendars for peak bloom.

On Thursday, the National Park Service and organizers of the National Cherry Blossom Festival said March 23-26 are the projected peak bloom dates for the District of Columbia's Tidal Basin cherry blossoms.

There are approximately 3,800 Japanese Yoshino cherry trees around the Tidal Basin and National Mall, according to NPS, and peak bloom is determined when 70% of the blossoms are open.

The Japanese cherry blossom season in D.C. dates back to 1912 when the mayor of Tokyo at the time, Mr. Yukio Ozaki, gave 3,000 trees to the capital as a "symbol of friendship," according to Fumito Mikaye, minister of public affairs for the Japanese Embassy.

"Since then, the cherry blossom trees have been treasured and beloved here in D.C. and have become an integral part of the landscape and culture," Mikaye said.

This year's cherry blossom trees have been particularly difficult to read, said Jeff Reinbold, National Park Service superintendent of National Mall and Memorial Parks.

"Determining the dates for peak bloom is one of the great puzzles in the nation's capital," Reinbold said, adding, "The trees never reached dormancy, which is what we use to calculate when the blooms will emerge."

The predicted bloom dates are based on long-term forecasts, historical records and the appearance of trees, according to Reinbold.

Peak bloom is occurring earlier each year, with the historical average date being April 4, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

The federal government’s Fifth National Climate Assessment explains that peak bloom is affected by seasonal shifts, including milder, shorter winter seasons and spring warmth beginning earlier.

The D.C. area is experiencing one of the warmest Februarys and winters on record; the 2024 season is currently the fifth warmest winter on record and the seventh warmest February on record, according to the National Weather Service (NWS), which forecasts above-average warmth through much of March.

The EPA reports that peak bloom dates have shifted earlier by about seven days since 1921. Over the last 20 years, peak bloom dates have occurred before the April 4 average 15 times.
