Resan till Melonia ( The Journey to Melonia ) is a Swedish/Norwegian animated film which is very loosely based on William Shakespeare's The Tempest . It was the first fully animated film Per Åhlin directed and one of the most expensive Swedish animated films.

On the pristine and beautiful paradise island called Melonia, a wizard, Prospero, lives with his daughter Miranda, his garderner Caliban (who happens to have the appearance of a vegetable garden himself), the bird-like spirit Ariel and the artsy, theatre loving poet William. They live a peaceful life, thanks to Prosperos magic and Melonias lifeforce, which powers the magic. Among the magical inventions of Prospero is a magical elixir, which has the potential to make anything grow large in size, which is given to Caliban for using in the garden.

At the beginning of the film, this peace is disturbed when the greedy Slug and Slag from the nightmarish factory island Plutonia is about to arrive on Melonia for colonization and resource exploiting. With them they have not only Captain Tree-stand (Kapten Julgransfot), a female cook and a helmsman - They also have a refugee from Plutonia, Ferdinand, who had just escaped a life as a child slave on Plutonia factory.

Ariel uses his magic to send the ship to the bottom of the ocean. Luckily, the ships crew and Ferdinand survives, but so do Slug and Slag. The villains proceed to kidnap Caliban with his elixir while Ferdinand, Miranda and the rest of the cast decides to journey to Plutonia in order to free the rest of the children from Plutonia.

This movie provides examples of the following:

  • Adaptational Heroism : Caliban wasn't exactly a heroic ficure in Shakespeare's play, but here he ends up as the movie's biggest (in all senses of the word) hero.
  • Age Lift : Miranda and Ferdinand are young children in this movie, as opposed to their older counterparts from the play.
  • The Eeyore : Caliban, who is always grumbling and complaining, and is contrasted with the ever-cheerful Ariel.
  • Happiness in Slavery : As in the original play, averted. Caliban is decidedly not happy serving Prospero, and though Ariel is a lot more good-natured and upbeat about it, he still yearns for freedom.
  • Hypocrisy Nod : Prospero, Twice. Slug and Slag wants to exploit the power that exists on Melonia, which Prospero tries to stop. However, the only reason why Prospero can use magic at all, and the source of his magical elixir, is exactly that. Caliban points out this, and Prospero admits to this. Also, Prospero and his people go on a quest to save the enslaved friends of Ferdinand - yet he is forcing both Caliban and Ariel to work for him against their will. In the end, he is forced to free them both.
  • Mr. Imagination : William! Ariel: I see it! William: You see what you want to see, but what you see is an illusion, just a wave among other waves! Ariel: It is getting closer! It is getting here! In that box— William: You call it a box! I see a monster, that has lost its eyes! Ariel: Your imagination! A box is a box... is a box!
  • Nature Spirit : Ariel, or it is at least very heavily implied that he is.
  • Nightmarish Factory : Plutonia.
  • No OSHA Compliance : The aforementioned Nightmarish Factory shows its workers working near unshielded circular saw blades and probably noxious fumes without any safeguards whatsoever. Oh, and did we mention that the workers are children ?
  • Plant Person : ...Or Rather a "Garden Person": Caliban
  • Prophecies Rhyme All the Time : Subverted. Given that it is based on The Tempest, there is a fair bit of rhyming monologue and dialogue (at least in Swedish). However, whenever anything magic is spoken, you can be sure that it won't rhyme. Except for when Miranda does it.
  • Since the film is based on a Shakespearean play, that can be said about most of the characters.
  • It gets practically meta when one of the sub-plots revolves around William trying to stage an amateur production of The Tempest, the very play the movie is loosely based on. At one point, Ariel ends up playing the roles of both himself and Caliban.

i keep hoping this style of lumpy, scrappy, “ugly-cute” cartooning will come back in vogue again. i assume this stuff is due to cycle back around, but it’s also hard to imagine children’s movies ever allowing anything to look this frumpy anymore

I think this sort of wonkiness is a lot more suited to the way kids understand their surroundings - drawings where nothing seems to fit right, but you’re optimistic you could grow into it

A 100+ minute animation epic , directed by Per Ahlin, aka, Scandinavian Miyazaki, AKA, Norse God of Animation, that rivals literally any of the greatest animated feature films that one could think of.  And, why isn’t this one of the most globally beloved animated films of it’s generation?

To date (I believe), the most expensive Swedish film production ever undertaken.  This was the one that was supposed to make Sweden a contender on the world stage of animation, and blast Ahlin into the same stratosphere occupied by Miyazaki, Jankovics, Laloux, Rintaro, Bluth, etc etc.  Sadly, it was not to be.

‘ Melonia ’ (as us Cult Of Melonia members & Ahlin disciples like to refer to it as) sees Ahlin take Shakespeare’s Tempest,…

I had such a strong feeling watching this film, of familiarity that I could not put my finger to. It looks like something I saw as a kid, on Nickelodeon, probably, but it was definitely not what I had seen. Something about the way it is animated put me in mind of some old cartoon that I can't place. Some bizarre cross between Rocky and Bullwinkle and Danger Mouse is what kept coming to mind, but neither were accurate. Regardless, this phantom familiarity made it that much more enjoyable to watch.

It's a strange cartoon, a story inspired by The Tempest , but with a powerful antiwar message and some odd imagery. Caliban, especially, is bizarrely portrayed (with a face made…

Arguably the best animated film from Sweden, if not simply for the presence of Allan Edwall as an old wizard. I was so close to giving it 5/5 if they had tightened up the script with more fleshed out characters, smoother pacing, and less repetitive dialogue (they really try to make sure you don't miss any vital plot points), but there was still some genuinely hard-hitting stuff here for a kids' film, tackling anti-capitalism, anti-war, and anti-pollution.

It oozed with personality as you'd expect from Per Åhlin, but while Thunderclump (1974) may have been charming with its animation + live-action gimmick, this was straight up epic in scope, becoming the most expensive animated film the country made up to that…

The best children's movie ever made. Far from the bland, artificial chill of Pixar's and Disney's products, Åhlin's masterpiece feature breathtaking hand-made visuals on par with any Ghibli-film.

Resan till Melonia is an unmistakable echo of the revolutionary 70's. The whole film is a critique of the unsustainability and barbary of capitalism, typical of the popular culture of that time.

I became obsessed with this movie when I was a teenager, and ever since then it was been very close to my heart. The music especially, the leitmotif written by Björn Isfält is just something extra. It gives me chills of nostalgia and memories of childhood, and I cry melancholic tears knowing I will just keep growing older.

I love the voice acting, I adore the animation and the typical Per Åhlin style, the water colour backgrounds and well detailed buildings.

Even as a teen, the huge fall out at the end scared me SO much. I hate malfunctioning robots and similar. Yuck yuck yuck!!

I know this movie line for line by heart, and I love it!

The Journey to Melonia

Voyage to Melonia ( Swedish : Resan till Melonia ; full English title: Voyage to Melonia: A fantasy loosely based on Shakespeare's 'The Tempest' ) is a 1989 Swedish-Norwegian animated adventure fantasy film directed by Per Åhlin , loosely based on William Shakespeare 's The Tempest , with further inspiration from Jules Verne 's Propeller Island and Charles Dickens ' Oliver Twist . It was Åhlin's first fully animated feature film, as his earlier films Out of an Old Man's Head and Dunderklumpen! had both used a mix of animation and live action.

The film won two Guldbagge Awards for Best Creative Achievement (a category with three awards for technical achievements without their own categories); the first to Åhlin for the animation, the second to Björn Isfält for the score.

The beautiful paradise island Melonia is inhabited by the sorcerer Prospero with his daughter Miranda, the albatross Ariel, the good-natured vegetable-faced gardener Caliban and William the dog-nosed poet. They live a generally peaceful life, except for Caliban who has to work hard with the garden. A few miles away lies the dark island Plutonia, where the greedy capitalists Slug and Slagg rule. Once as green and flourishing as Melonia, Plutonia is now perceived as hell on earth, where children are forced to, under slave conditions, build weapons and tools of war, which Slug and Slagg believe is the way of the future. With Plutonia's resources nearly exhausted, Slug and Slagg turn their gaze on the unexploited Melonia, scheming to take it over with a gigantic drill.

The movie begins with one of the child slaves, a boy named Ferdinand, escaping from Plutonia in a box, and ends up on Melonia, where Miranda and Prospero nurse him back to health. Prospero has just finished a magical growth elixir (humorously labelled "power soup" for the remainder of the movie), which Caliban is entrusted. Slug and Slagg kidnap Caliban and bring him to Plutonia. Ferdinand, Miranda, Prospero and some others journey to Plutonia in order to free Caliban, which eventually turns into a quest to free Ferdinand's enslaved friends. Eventually, Miranda helps the children escape by transforming them into birds and transporting them into an old theater, where William the poet is making a less than successful attempt at staging Shakespeare's The Tempest . After breaking out of his prison, the thirsty Caliban thoughtlessly drinks the elixir. Slug and Slagg, encouraged by Caliban's growth, attempt to coax him into working for them, but their rants of superiority by arms falls upon deaf ears. They then attempt to destroy Caliban using the great drill, but he easily lifts it off the ground and plunges it into the floor, causing the island to sink to the bottom of the ocean in a gigantic maelstrom . Slug and Slagg are unable to escape the maelstrom and as they do not appear again, it's safe to assume that they sink to the bottom and drown. The theater almost sinks as well, but is saved by Caliban. Prospero loses his magical powers, but accepts it readily, knowing that everybody's power will replace his magic. He frees Caliban and Ariel from his service, and the movie ends with a singing Ariel flying off into the sunset.

With a budget of 22 million SEK (roughly USD $3.1 million), Voyage to Melonia was, at the time, the most expensive Swedish animated film produced, much because of the long production process from 1982 to 1989. When making the script, Per Åhlin and Karl Rasmussen would pick lines from The Tempest they thought they might have use of, and then put them together into a coherent synopsis. An influence for the visual style was Jules Verne 's Propeller Island from 1895 .

Critical reception

The reviews were generally very positive, with film magazine Chaplin' s reviewer Göran Ribe comparing it to Jiří Trnka 's A Midsummer Night's Dream and Paul Grimault 's The King and the Mockingbird . Some critique was given regarding the slow pace and ambiguous tone, making it hard to distinguish whether it was a children's film or aimed for adults. Others complained about the somewhat naïve message.

The most negative review came from Variety , where Keith Keller wrote: " The Voyage to Melonia by Per Åhlin, Sweden's past master of animated films, probably has aimed over everybody's head with this go at The Tempest . Seven years in the making at a locally extraordinary cost $3.5-million, pic looks big but soon sags dangerously, and eventually ruptures."
