10 Culinary Adventures to Try in Kansas City
Indulgent experiences in KC make for a city of flavors.
Kansas City used to be known strictly for its world-class barbecue, but in recent years the landscape has expanded to include an impressive array of urbane and creative food options.
This comes as no surprise to locals who enjoy on a daily basis the talents of some outstanding chefs, many of whom left our hometown to hone skills and burnish reputations, only to return to their roots to delight and nourish us.
But it’s not solely restaurant meals that seduce us these days. On any given day, there is an enchanting experience in which to indulge around the city. Whether it is an underground supper or dinner in a field, if you live to eat or drink, this list is for you.
Amigoni Urban Winery
The lovingly restored Drover Telegram building in the West Bottoms is now home to a stunning winery . Available for private parties, it’s also open six days a week so visitors can taste each of the Amigoni varietals. Purchase a wine flight (or Boulevard beer ) and a cheese plate from Green Dirt Farm or Shatto Milk , and feel good about keeping it local.
The Broadmoor Bistro
The Broadmoor Technical Center in Shawnee Mission runs a culinary arts program. Multi-course dinners are hosted by the students several times a month. Reserve a spot and be prepared to be wowed by our future culinary stars.
Take a wine education class! Tired of listening to wine snobs extol the virtues of their favorite cabernet or discuss the earthy quality of an Oregon pinot noir? Sign up for a class at this popular Crossroads wine shop and learn the lingo from an expert. Sniff and swirl your way through the tastings, and then test your newfound knowledge the next time you peruse a wine list or shop for wine.
Farmer's Markets
Farmer’s Markets abound in the metropolitan area, from the River Market to Overland Park and Lee’s Summit. Check the hours before venturing out, but do make the tour for fresh produce, meats and chef’s demonstrations.
Green Dirt Farm
Green Dirt Farm in Weston has the best adult field trips going. During the warmer months, its owners host Farm to Table dinners beautifully prepared by a rotating stable of local chefs and Cheesemaking Appreciation events highlighting GDF’s own cheeses paired with local wines or beer.
Chef Alex Pope recently opened a butcher shop in the East Bottoms featuring locally sourced meats. It’s worth the drive to pick up freshly ground sausages, custom cut ribeyes or farm fresh eggs. Before going home, stop out back at Pigwich , Pope’s outdoor sandwich trailer, for a Thai meatball banh mi or porchetta sandwich.
Powell Garden
Enjoy the Barn Dinner Series . Grab some friends and head to Kingsville, MO. A guest chef will be on hand to create a multi-course dinner employing seasonal ingredients in the Heartland Harvest Garden . Communal tables add to the ambiance of this farm-to-table experience.
The Test Kitchen
Submit your e-mail address on the Test Kitchen website to enter a lottery and put your trust in local foodie and TK owner Jenny Vergara. If you’re one of 20 lucky winners, you’ll be treated to an adventurous evening in a secret location. Different chefs and mixologists devise each month’s menu.
The Truck Stop in the Crossroads
Experience the food truck scene on First Fridays in the lot at Wyandotte and 21st streets, when dozens of local food trucks park and serve. Sample an array of foods including barbecue nachos, gumbo, paella, tacos, burritos and cupcakes, and then stroll through the nearby Crossroads Arts District galleries elbow-to-elbow other Kansas Citians enjoying an artistic evening.
Winemaker Dinners
Gram & Dun , Bluestem and Room 39 , among other restaurants, bring in vintners from the West Coast or Europe for a special evening. The wines are paired with a customized prix fixe menu, and both chef and vintner hold court as they discuss each varietal and dish. So much more than a typical night out, it’s a fun way to meet people, enjoy fabulous wines and taste dishes that aren’t on the regular menu.

Taste of Kansas City Food Tour

I was recently in Kansas City, Missouri for the first time to attend a blogging conference. While the information I gathered from the event was great, I played hooky the last day to join a 3-hour Taste of Kansas City Food Tour. I personally think food tours are one of the best ways to really get your hands dirty with the ins and outs of a city. Especially when your hands are dirty with BBQ chicken and sausage lamb rolls.
The Kansas City Food Tour meets at Red Dragon House in the Historic Garment District. If you arrive early enough you can relax and enjoy a tokkuri of Sake, or a refreshing Mai Tai.
Once our tour guide showed up, we all gathered around a table in the restaurant and were immediately served Crab Rangoons, Egg Rolls, Kung Pao Chicken and Sesame Chicken. And I will warn you as I warned from the very beginning, pace your food intake because the servings are not tiny. I found it incredibly difficult to restrain myself at every place we visited simply because I knew I had to save room for all the stops. My favorite at Red Dragon House was the crab rangoon.
As we enjoyed the food at each stop, we learned about the history of the city, from the reign and influence of mob boss Tom Pendergast to the abundance of brothels for those passing through the city on their way to find gold in California, to the sequence of an entire system of underground tunnels used to smuggle alcohol during the days of Prohibition.
There are a few varieties of the Kansas City Food Tour offered- the daytime tours include transportation on the free streetcar that runs through the city, or you can opt for the tour I did called the Lip Smacking Foodie Tour , which was offered by bus. A mini bus. With only five of us on my tour, we had plenty of room to spread out in the bus/van.
The second stop was to an Australian bakery called Banksia Bakehouse . Banksia (named after a fruit tree in the land down under) was started by three friends from Australia who wanted to infuse their native cuisine with the food of Kansas City. We indulged in a plate of pie and sausage rolls, from Smoked Veggies to Pork and Fennel to Australian Lamb, each roll was better than the last.
We were also given slices of Lamington, an Australian sponge cake dipped in chocolate syrup, layered in raspberry jam, and coated with coconut. Super moist and creamy, Lamington is not for the sweet faint of heart.
Next we took a quick drive past the Kansas City Public Library, painted to look like books on a shelf. The books that are featured on the building were voted on by residents of the city and include classics like Charlotte’s Web and To Kill a Mockingbird.
We made our way up to the River Market District to the City Market, a collection of shops, restaurants and Farmer stalls just south of the Missouri River. The group had an opportunity to visit the Planters Seed and Spice Company , an indoor market with an array of food products, spices, teas, coffees, soup mixes, candies, nuts, trail mixes, dried fruits, vinegars and a large variety of garden gifts.
I picked up this adorable kitten creamer for only $10! As part of the Kansas City Food Tour, we were also generously gifted with a large bag of Planters Original Barbeque Spice and Sugar Rub to take home with us.
Next up we ventured into the Crossroads neighborhood of the city, an area known for its many art galleries and colorful decor. While many of the storefronts seem to be empty, this district hosts almost 10,000 visitors every month during First Fridays where the showrooms open their doors, food trucks line the streets and Kansas Citians gather in droves to celebrate art and drink. We went into a pizza spot called Papa Keno’s Pizzeria and we all split a giant BBQ Chicken pie.
The decor was also nicely tied into the First Friday event with original artwork lining the walls. This is also the most convenient location on the tour to grab a draft of a local brew, another “food” Kansas City is known for.
It is important to note that the tour does not stop at any of the renowned BBQ spots, BBQ being the other major “food group” the city is super famous for. The reason was explained by our tour guide that there are simply so many opinions as to who serves the best barbeque that not one spot can be pinpointed down on the tour. I felt like I had already had enough BBQ during my stay that I was actually grateful to be trying new foods.
Our second to last stop is actually not a normal place our particular tour visits, but if there is time you can request a stop here. Artist Alley , a literal street art museum. For those of you familiar with the city, you can find the alley located between 17th and 18th Streets near Locust and Cherry Streets. It was started in 2014 with a local freelance artist named Jason Harrington who received permission to paint part of the exterior wall of the Slap-n-Tickle Gallery. Since that time, other building owners in both the alley and the neighborhood have given permission to local artists to paint their art on the wall lending to perhaps the most colorful alley in the United States.
As our time was winding down, the last stop of the tour was at a local candy/confection shop called Bizz & Wizzy Confections , across from the old TWA Airlines Headquarters building. Though TWA has long moved out of the space, it is interesting to see the 22-ft skyliner rocket still atop the building. The rocket was designed by Kansas City home grown hero – Walt Disney. It was modeled after the spaceship that sits in California’s Tommorowland in Disneyland.
Anyway, back to the sweets. We enjoyed chocolate dipped Oreo cookies while learning the history of the shop.
I ended up grabbing a box of caramel candies to take back to Florida with me – my favorite flavor being the BBQ Caramel. How can one come to Kansas City and not take home a box of barbeque caramels? I could be home and relive my Kansas City Food Tour with my family.
So now that I have told you everything you will eat, see, and learn about on the tour, are you ready to enjoy it for yourself? Visit Taste of Kansas City Food Tours for more information on this tour or to learn about any of their other events. I wish to add that I was not compensated on this tour for a post. I was not sure if I was going to be able to sneak away from the conference so I wasn’t able to commit until the day before. I just want to clarify that I was not paid or asked to say nice things about them!!

In a remote Kansas farm town, this chef is inspiring pride through locally-sourced food
One of the best restaurants in Kansas opens four days a week on the wind-swept plains, an hour beyond the nearest stoplight. In a county that’s lost more than half of its population, Fly Boy Brewery & Eats offers a renewed sense of hope — and a cheeseburger worth driving for.
It’s rush hour on a Friday evening in Sylvan Grove, Kansas, and Main Street is mostly empty, save for the rare truck or tractor.
But inside one of the rough limestone buildings, Fly Boy Brewery and Eats are filling up.
“We eat here as often as we can,” said Sandy Labertew, sitting at a table of eight. “Because the business is in Sylvan and we want to do as much as we can to keep things open here.”
Like thousands of other small towns, Sylvan Grove was built around agriculture, to supply and educate big families running lots of small farms in the area. There was a rail stop here where the grain went out and money came in.
Those days are long gone. Now the families are small, and the farms themselves are generally enormous and are increasingly owned by people living in distant cities. The railroad pulled out years ago. Since 1880, the county has shed 65% of its population.
It’s tough to make a living out here, and not the most obvious place to buy a restaurant. But that’s exactly what Grant Wagner did three years ago.
“I just got tired of making food for rich people,” Wagner said. “I wanted to go back to making food that I cared about for people I cared about.”
Wagner grew up in Bennington, Kansas, another little town where Wagner says people knew how to work with their hands, fix stuff, and make do.
Like many ambitious rural kids, he left town after high school. Wagner went to culinary school and worked his way up through some of the best restaurants in the Kansas City metro, like Bluestem and Justus Drugstore .
Eventually, Wagner became executive chef at JJ’s on the Plaza , where he says customers might drop $2-3,000 on dinner.
“I couldn't relate to the people that I was cooking the food for, and cooking, it’s a passion project, making any kind of food,” said Wagner.
When he quit JJ’s about a decade ago, Wagner moved back to central Kansas. He did consulting for local restaurants, helping them open and, often, helping them close.
That’s how he met the original owners of Fly Boy: Clay and Linda Haring, who hired him to plan their menu and run the kitchen.
Wagner left to operate a food truck, but in the middle of the pandemic, he got a call from the Harings. They were going to close Fly Boy — or sell it to him.
Wagner called up his friend Lucas Hass. They put the money together and went into business.
These days, on Fly Boy’s busiest nights, Wagner says they’ll serve 300 people, more than the entire population of Sylvan Grove.
Some of his customers are hunters from out of town, some are traveling to or from nearby Wilson Lake, and some drive in two hours from Wichita for a steak or a top-flight cheeseburger.
Fly Boy works off a pretty standard menu for a steakhouse or brewpub, with an interesting selection of beers that are made on-site, like the Hotel Oscar Whiskey (a light honey-infused ale), Tail Spin IPA, and BarnStormer Brown.
Prices range from under $10 for a kid’s burger meal, to almost $40 for a Kansas City Strip. Prime rib is a favorite special, but another week they might serve house-made gnocchi in Gorgonzola cream sauce, with spinach, steak, and curried pecans.
All the cuts of meat are vacuum sealed and slow-cooked, a French process called sous vide , before they’re finished on a grill or super-hot oven. Wagner says this means the steaks and prime rib are cooked perfectly to temperature, every time.
Wagner said the technique still isn’t seen much in these parts of Kansas.
“Outside of Kansas City or maybe Wichita, I don't know any other restaurants are actually using sous vide to cook,” said Wagner. “It was something I learned at the Justus Drugstore. Chef Justus taught me how to do that.”
Most importantly, Wagner says everything on the menu is made from scratch, most of it using local ingredients.
“I’ve got 100% local beef, and man it is fantastic,” said Wagner. “A lot of our produce is coming from within 60 miles.”
Fly Boy uses honey from right down the street in one of their beers, local cucumbers for the pickles, and mushrooms grown in a local basement.
Lucas Hass, Fly Boy’s co-owner and brewer, says this commitment to local sourcing isn’t so much about the environment, as it is about supporting the economy in a place that’s seen its vitality ebb away.
“You gotta do what you gotta do to survive out here, but where we can we try to support local, because it keeps it here,” said Hass. “I really hate seeing so much of our wealth being vacuumed to a different coast.”
Fly Boy’s approach to quality and local sourcing is appreciated up and down Main Street.
“It’s just a wonderful place. It’s just a place to be proud of,” said Ramie Schulteis, from behind her desk at the Sylvan Grove Public Library.
“The food is fantastic, and it is a fun place for local people to go and enjoy themselves,” said Schulteis. “The service is amazing, the drinks are good, and it’s also important for our economy.”
Schulteis says some Fly Boy customers stay in one of a few short-term rental properties in town.
And of course, the restaurant creates jobs. Hannah Pahls, a junior at Sylvan Grove High School, was hired on as a server here last year. She says she’s proud to be part of a small-town success story.
“This restaurant, it’s been through everything. It’s been through COVID... I just feel like it’s a big inspiration to the town being so well known here in Lincoln County,” said Pahls before starting her shift.
The idea that a restaurant can inspire a town may seem overblown if you’re living in a city with plenty of them.
But in a region where towns are shrinking and restaurants are closing, Fly Boy has given Sylvan Grove a renewed sense of pride.
It’s proving that there are still ways for creative young people to make a living in small towns and that rural people will reward high standards, even if it means paying $16 for a cheeseburger.
“We deserve this,” said Labertew. “Rural America is kind of going by the wayside, but there are reasons to come back.”

Husband of Kansas City Chiefs Cheerleader Who Died of Sepsis After Stillbirth Speaks Out Against 'One-Size-Fits-All' Prenatal Care
Krystal "Krissy" Anderson died of sepsis on March 20 following the stillbirth of her daughter
The husband of the former Kansas City Chiefs cheerleader who died in childbirth following the stillbirth of her daughter is speaking out.
Clayton Anderson called his late wife Krystal "Krissy" Anderson "my world, my best friend and obviously the love of my life" in an interview with ABC News following her March 20 death from sepsis at age 40.
Krissy died after the stillbirth of the couple's daughter, Charlotte Willow, on March 16. Charlotte was born during Krissy's 20th week of pregnancy, per ABC News .
The couple rushed to the hospital because Krissy was feeling back pain, which was a symptom the couple had been told by their doctor could be due to contractions or dehydration. Tests revealed the presence of amniotic fluid and Charlotte's heartbeat couldn't be detected by 9 p.m. on March 16.
Hours after her daughter's death, Krissy spiked a fever and began showing signs of "severe sepsis," ABC News reported.
Doctors performed surgery to remove Charlotte from Krissy's uterus to save her life, her husband told the outlet.

After the first surgery, Krissy "returned on a ventilator and dialysis machine with kidney, liver, and lung failure," and had to undergo two more surgeries.
By the night of Tuesday, March 19, Krissy appeared to be recovering but her condition suddenly deteriorated that night and she died from sepsis-related complications on Wednesday morning.
According to the Mayo Clinic , sepsis is “a serious condition in which the body responds improperly to an infection." The condition can lead to septic shock and death.
At least 1.7 million adults in the U.S. develop sepsis, and nearly 270,000 die from the infection, per year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) .
Maternal sepsis is the second leading cause of pregnancy-related death in the U.S. according to an organization called End Sepsis .
Per the medical journal Healthcare , "Black and Hispanic populations are frequently associated with higher rates of morbidity and mortality in sepsis," than their white counterparts.
"While this is often attributed to systemic bias against minority groups, a growing body of literature has found patient, community, and hospital-based factors to be driving racial differences," the journal continued.
Clayton told ABC News: "One of the issues that I guess I have with the system overall is Krystal is 40, and she's Black, and we'd had a loss before, but even then they say you know, you can't start a plan with maternal-fetal medicine or the high-risk maternity doctors until you get to week 14."
Before Charlotte's death, the couple had also lost a son, James, to stillbirth in 2022.

Krissy died before reaching her 22nd week of pregnancy, when doctors had planned to admit her to a specialized hospital that handled pre-viable births.
"All pregnancy is high risk, especially, more so, when you're a woman of color, or you're older, and they should be treated that way from the start," Clayton told ABC News .
"Expecting somebody who's had a loss to go four weeks in between seeing their care providers… That's the same protocol that's done for a 23-year-old that's very healthy," he said. "It can't be a one-size-fits-all."
AdventHealth Shawnee Mission, the hospital that Krystal visited, offered a statement to ABC News. They did not detail details about patient care due to HIPAA.
"Our hearts are hurting in this tragic situation. We along with the independent providers who deliver care in our facilities strive to provide the best possible care to every patient based on their specific needs and circumstances. We extend our prayers and support to family members and loved ones experiencing the devastating loss of precious life," the message read.

Krissy cheered for the Chiefs from 2006 to 2011 and 2013 to 2016 before working as a yoga instructor and software engineer, per her obituary . She was working in healthcare technology at the time of her death and advocated for more Black women to pursue careers in STEM.
"Krystal radiated joy and laughter to everyone she encountered," her obituary read. A GoFundMe has been set up in her honor.

Will Beyoncé announce the 'Cowboy Carter' tour? Fans think she may be hitting the road again soon
- Beyoncé released her new album "Cowboy Carter" on Friday.
- Some fans think she's gearing up to tour again, though many say they don't have the funds to attend.
- The Renaissance World Tour wrapped last October in Kansas City. It was hailed as a must-see event.
Less than a year after the Renaissance World Tour wrapped, it might already be time for the Beyhive to dust off their boots and head back out to see Beyoncé live again.
The Renaissance World Tour was hailed as a once-in-a-lifetime event , a bona fide status symbol , and a blockbuster concert movie that awed audiences while near-singlehandedly boosting AMC's revenue . The 56-show run wrapped on October 1, 2023, in Kansas City.
On its heels, Beyoncé has released her new album " Cowboy Carter ." The triumphant country-inspired project is billed as "Act II" in a three-part "Renaissance" series.
So it would stand to reason — financially and thematically — that Beyoncé would plan another tour leg for "Cowboy Carter."
Her team seemed to hint that something is coming by launching a new website, " Been Country ." The landing page shows a photo of young Beyoncé performing at the Texas Sweetheart Pageant, as well as a childhood photo of her mother, Tina Knowles-Lawson , and an image of a banjo.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Slayonce Avenue (@slayonce_avenue2)
A fan account on Instagram shared a rumor that the tour announcement is scheduled for Friday, exactly one week after the album's arrival. Knowles-Lawson liked the post, adding more fuel to the rumor's flame.
Beyoncé's longtime collaborator The-Dream, who produced 10 of the new album's 27 tracks, also alluded to a forthcoming tour. He celebrated the release of "Cowboy Carter" on X, writing, "This tour bout to B' Incredible!"

Fans grabbed screenshots of The-Dream's post, though it has since been deleted.

However, the six-month turnaround since Beyoncé's last concert does cast suspicion on these theories. Thanks to "Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé," we know the Renaissance World Tour took four years to ideate and execute.
It's unclear if plans for a "Cowboy Carter" show were also in the works during that time, but if not, fans may have to wait a bit longer to watch Beyoncé perform. As she's already made clear, " A queen moves at her own pace ."
Even so, a delay may come as welcome news, even for dedicated members of the Beyhive.
Many fans have been posting about their lack of ticket funds on X, playfully begging Beyoncé to put off touring until next year.
