Miles & Points Interview:   The Luxury Travel Expert

Xavier founded The Luxury Travel Expert  as a source for luxury travel on a budget.

How and when did you start collecting miles and points?

I started collecting miles and points about 8 years ago.  At the moment, I’m an American Airlines Executive Platinum member, a Starwood Preferred Guest Platinum member, and a Miles & More Frequent Flyer .

Why did you start your blog?  What’s special about it?

With a couple of friends (all of us are doctors), I started the blog 2 months ago, with a focus on luxury travel on a budget.

There is an avalanche of travel websites, information, and reviews out there.  We feel that this enormous amount of information can both inspire and frustrate the demanding traveler ( “Too many choices!,”   “Is it worth it?,” and  “Will it fit my taste?” ).

So we want to filter all that information into 1 clear website with a single focus on luxury travel.  It’s based on our own 20 years of experience of traveling around the world.  Besides some permanent helpful information on the website, we also send 3 weekly newsletters on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, that feature:

  • Inspiration on Monday: top 10 travel lists to inspire .
  • Reviews on Wednesday: luxury hotel , flight , and destination reviews.
  • Tips on Friday: competitions , interesting airline & hotel offers , tips for luxury travel on a budget , luxury travel news & trends, and (in the very near future) airline miles & hotel points news.

Luxury Travel Expert - Interview With Xavier

What’s the one single thing people can do to get more miles?

Subscribe to the newsletters of bloggers like Daraius to be instantly updated on promotions for earning extra miles or hotel points.  For example, American Airlines always has a big returning promotion for European customers in autumn that gives you 30,000 extra miles per trans-Atlantic business flight.

What’s your most memorable travel experience?

I would like to mention a couple of travel experiences, which were all memorable in their own category:

  • Beach Holiday – nothing beats a Maldives holiday at a luxury hotel like Gili Lankanfushi  or One & Only Reethi Rah .
  • Wildlife Holiday – tracking mountain gorillas in Bwindi’s National Park , Uganda
  • Scenic Holiday – hiking in Torres del Paine National Park , Chilean Patagonia
  • Cultural Holiday – visiting temples of Angkor Wat , Cambodia
  • Flying Business Class – Qatar Airways Dreamliner Boeing 787

Luxury Travel Expert - Interview With Xavier

What do your family and friends think of your miles & points hobby?

In the beginning, I think they found it weird.  Meanwhile, I found them crazy not to make more efforts to travel for free.

Nowadays, I’ve convinced most of my friends and family that miles & points can really save a lot of money when you travel often.  They all joined frequent flyer programs and some of them are helping me with the blog.

Is there any tool or trick which you’ve found especially useful in this hobby?

You can travel in style for almost free when you are an airline mile or hotel point freak.  But it does take quite some effort to get some basic knowledge of how to collect miles & points in the most efficient manner .

So I think the best trick is to take some time and get familiar with loyalty programs and choose the 1 that best fits your travel profile.

In addition, when you really like to stay at the top hotels (and who doesn’t), you will have noticed that many of the high end hotels, like Aman or Four Seasons, don’t have loyalty programs (except for St Regis and Park Hyatt).

But I learned that you can still get a lot of free perks at those resorts when you make a booking through a Virtuoso travel agent .  So there are alternatives for loyalty programs at these uber-luxurious hotels, but you have to know them.  I have a list of tips on my website.

Luxury Travel Expert - Interview With Xavier

What was the least expected way you’ve earned miles or points?

Earning miles by writing trip reports on Tripadvisor (through the Indian Tripadvisor website ) and Holiday Check .

What do you now know about collecting miles and points which you wish you knew when you started out?

You have to choose and stick to a few airline and hotel loyalty programs!  In the beginning, I was collecting miles and points in a non-focused way through different airline and hotel programs.  And in the end I couldn’t do anything with them, because they expired or I did not have enough points in my accounts.

About 3 years ago I shifted my focus and now mainly earn American Airlines miles (even though I am based in Europe) and hotel points through Starwood Preferred Guest.

What would your readers be surprised to know about you?

We are from Belgium, not from the USA.  And our main focus is cancer research for finding a cure and better diagnostic tests.  So we run the website in our sparse free time.

We want to combine our 2 passions of cancer research and traveling.  And how everyone could sponsor cancer research simply by traveling.  But we will inform you about this as soon as our ideas are more concrete.

Any parting words?

Keep traveling in style.  Never stop dreaming.  And follow my blog ;).

The 11 most luxurious amenity kits you can get on a first class flight

Complimentary first class amenity kits are a surprisingly big business for airlines.

The luxury offerings are constantly being revamped to incorporate new high-profile fashion designers in order to give frequent fliers something to look forward to, and most importantly, a reason to stay loyal.

First class kits are usually packed with pamper products from top beauty brands — including Aesop, Aromatherapy, Bulgari, and Ferragamo — to keep passengers feeling hydrated and rejuvenated while in the sky.

Some major airlines now also offer their premium passengers with designer in-flight sleeper suits and slippers to ensure the ultimate comfort during overnight long-haul flights.

Business Insider teamed up with the brains behind the Luxury Travel Expert blog to rank the best kits in first class travel.

Xavier, a doctor, university professor, and medical researcher, has 20 years of experience traveling the world for both business and pleasure. He writes about luxury hotels and airlines — and has been lucky enough to fly first class on many of them.

Scroll down for the 11 best first class amenity kits in the world according to the Luxury Travel Expert, ranked in ascending order.

11. United Airlines

the luxury travel expert doctor xavier

United has teamed up with UK spa brand Cowshed  for its luxury  amenity kits available to  first and business class passengers on long-haul flights.

The faux-leather washbags contain a number of spa goodies, including a chamomile refreshing toner towelette, a jasmine toning eye balm sachet, lip balm, hand cream and a quinoa face cream.

Other comfort items offered within the kit are a padded eye mask, comfortable socks, and travel essentials, such as  a toothbrush, toothpaste and a comb.

10. Delta Airlines

the luxury travel expert doctor xavier

The refreshed Delta One kits  have been created in collaboration with two premium brands — luggage specialist TUMI and American cosmetics brand Kiehl’s — and  are offered on Transoceanic international flights, as well as on routes between JFK and Los Angeles or San Francisco international airports.

Passengers traveling  outbound from the US receive  a navy hard-sided amenity kit, while customers heading to the US can expect a soft-sided black kit.

The packs  contain  Kiehl’s lip balm and a grapefruit-scented deluxe hand and body lotion with aloe vera and oatmeal.

Delta Comfort+ customers travelling on international flights also receive a Rest and Refresh pack with eye shades, ear plugs, and a dental kit containing Colgate toothpaste.

9. American Airlines

the luxury travel expert doctor xavier

First class customers on American Airlines flights are treated to  travel essentials from leading skincare and lifestyle brands Clark’s Botanicals and Cole Haan.

The airline unveiled a new range of  Cole Haan- designed amenity packs in January 2017, which also include  pajamas.

8. British Airways

the luxury travel expert doctor xavier

British brand  Liberty London has collaborated with British Airways on an exclusive range of amenity kits for customers flying first class with the airline.

They were first i ntroduced on selected flights between London and LA in January 2017, and will be rolled out across the rest of the first class network by the end of spring 2017.

The stylish washbags have a contemporary look, using prints from  Liberty London's textiles archive.

T he women's version features the  eye-catching ' Christelle'  oriental inspired floral print , and comes with a  convenient wristlet.  The men’s washbag is made of a black embossed textured exterior, with 'Felix Raison' paisley motif printed lining.

The kits contain a range of well-being products provided by Aromatherapy Associates.

As stated in ancient chronicles, in 1147, Prince Yury Dolgoruky invited his relative, Prince Svyatoslav Olgovich, to see him in Moscow, which was a small castle lost in the boundless Russian forest. Thus, the history of Russia's most important political, economic, cultural, and scientific center began. In the 12th century, Moscow turned into a fortress. By the 13th century, it was already a town, and in the 15th century, Moscow became the capital of the Russian State. Today Moscow, with its history, architectural masterpieces, and innumerable art treasures, has found itself in a whirlpool of global currents determining world development. People worldwide come to witness Moscow's splendors and fall for the charm the capital of the largest empire on earth certainly possesses.

Book a hotel

the luxury travel expert doctor xavier

We all dream of traveling to far-flung destinations and staying at ultraluxe hotels, but nobody likes to break his/her wallet on a holiday. When booking a room at a luxury hotel, you will have to choose whether you want the cheapest price for that room, or whether you want to pay more for enjoying extra perks and/or flexibility. I hereby present you my tips for saving money and getting the best deal at a luxury hotel.

Think I forgot one? Share your own travel tips in the comments section  or take my poll below.

  • Inspiration for finding the right hotel
  • Tips for when to book
  • Tips for booking a room at the cheapest rate
  • Tips for booking a room with (complimentary) extra perks
  • Tips for staying for free at luxury hotels

INSPIRATION FOR FINDING THE RIGHT HOTEL

  • Be inspired by my luxury travel blog . Every week, I post  top 10 travel lists  and  reviews of luxury hotels . You can subscribe to my  newsletter  (3x/week) and/or follow me on  Facebook , Twitter  and  Instagram . Each Saturday, I also publish a full tour of a luxury hotel on my popular Youtube channel .
  • Visit  Kiwi Collection , a great website featuring the finest luxury hotels in the world.
  • Read travel magazines, such as the  Conde Nast Traveler  and  Travel&Leisure .
  • Read  Tripadvisor  reviews.
  • Read  Flyertalk  reviews (google the name of the hotel + flyertalk).
  • Watch Youtube clips of hotels (you can find some examples on my Youtube Channel ).

TIPS FOR WHEN TO BOOK:

  • D o not book too late  as the top luxury hotels will often sell out months in advance. Do not count on a last-minute deal (which are not offered by most top hotels anyway).
  • When you want to save some bucks,  travel in the shoulder season  (e.g. summer months for the Caribbean, autumn months for the Maldives), but try to avoid the worst months weather-wise as you may find yourself very disappointed despite the fact that you saved a lot of money!

TIPS FOR BOOKING A ROOM AT THE LOWEST PRICE

  • Most of the time, the lowest room rate can be found on the  aggregator websites  Trivago  and Hotelscombined . These aggregators verify hotel prices at hundreds of other hotel booking sites (e.g.  Expedia ,  Booking.com , Hotels.com , Otel.com , Hotelopia.com , Ebookers, etc…) and show where you can book the cheapest rate. Try it out for yourself here:
  • The member-only websites  Jetsetter  and  Secret Escapes  (which do not feature on aggregator websites) negotiate temporary, special rates with some of the world’s finest hotels, which can represent a discount of up to 60% (room only or room with breakfast).  Membership is free and without hassle (just submit your name and email address). Sign up for the Jetsetter, Secret Escapes and Vacationist newsletters, so that you stay updated about their temporary offers. Read here  why I love Jetsetter so much, and here why I am a fan of Secret Escapes.
  • Always compare the price that you found on aggregator or member-only websites with the one featured on the official   hotel website  to make sure that it is the best price indeed. Do not forget to click the “special offers” section that is present on most hotel websites (and which an save you lots of money).
  • If you find elsewhere a lower price than the one offered on the hotel website, make us of a  Best Rate Guarantee . Not only will the lower room rate be matched, you will often receive an additional discount as well (of up to 25%)!
  • Make use of  discount coupons  that you can find anywhere on the internet (google the website of hotel name + coupon). For example,  Hotels.com  is one of my prefered hotel booking websites that regularly sends out 10% discount coupons by email (albeit not for the big hotel chains though).
  • Except when staying at one of the big hotel chains (Starwood, Hyatt, IHG, Marriott, Hilton), I always try to book my hotel stays through the website Hotels.com  and you can read  here  why. In a nutshell: Hotels.com  is not only very generous in matching the best price that you may have found on another websites, but you also collect credits towards free hotel stays and they have always have discount coupons on offer.
  • Sign-up for the  newsletters  of your preferred hotel (chains) or booking website. They often email coupons or advanced notifications when they’re having a sale.
  • Stay for free by using hotels points and credits that you collected in a  hotel loyalty program   (albeit very few of the top luxury hotel chains offer that option though). Click here  for more info.
  • Stay for free or at a highly discounted rate by keeping an eye out for  erroneous rates  on this  Flyertalk post .

TIPS FOR BOOKING A ROOM WITH (FREE) EXTRA PERKS

  • Some of the  world’s most exclusive hotel brands (e.g.  Aman resorts ) will only display the best rates on their official hotel website (so do not waste your time trying to find a lower price on an aggregator or member-only website as you won’t find one).
  • Check the  hotel website  directly for packages that include extra perks like spa credits, breakfast, or complimentary nights.
  • Absurdly, when booking a room at a top luxury hotel, it is sometimes advised not to book it directly on the hotel website, but rather through a Virtuoso  travel advisor. Not only will they create unique journeys and explorations in every corner of the globe, but more importantly, you will also get free access to special amenities and receive complimentary perks (e.g. upgrades, dinners, etc …) which is not the case when you book the same rate via the hotel directly. All hotels were you can enjoy the Virtuoso extra perks are listed on their website . If you are an Aman junkie, like me, then Virtuoso is the only way to book your stay. Read here why I love Virtuoso so much. My preferred Virtuoso travel agency is Classic Travel , not only because of their excellent service, but also because they have an online booking tool.

the luxury travel expert doctor xavier

  • Holders of an  American Express premium  or  Visa Signature   credit card  can also benefit from extra perks when they make the booking via their credit card travel office and/or pay with their credit card. Contact your local credit card company to find out whether they offer this travel service.
  • Elite members of hotel loyalty programs  will receive several benefits during their stay, ranging from late check-out and complimentary WiFi to suite upgrades and breakfast. Click here  for more info.
  • Elite members of  Cathay Pacific ‘s frequent flyer program ( Marco Polo Club ) are entitled to special benefits (e.g. early check in, late check out, room upgrade, complimentary breakfast) with partners such as Hilton, Hyatt, Fairmont, Marriott, Langham, Mandarin Oriental, Shangri-La, Swissotel, Peninsula, Swire and Ritz-Carlton. While some of these deals only apply to hotels or rentals in the Asia-Pacific region, others do not; the Mandarin Oriental benefit is applicable worldwide, for example.

Booking a hotel is not a big task, these days….. But what sort of hotel you want to check in and what is your budget affordability that matters on the first priority.

I went through the whole post above and trust me I found it pretty informative and helpful.

I am sure many people will able to book a better hotel on their respective budget at the place where they want to send their vacation.

Thank you so much for sharing this post here with us!!

try http://www.luxuryescapes.com for great hotel packages, a little like secretescapes but more defined content

My wife and I love to travel, but it can be expensive. So, I appreciate your tips for booking a hotel at a lawyer price. I’m definitely going to try and use the websites you mentioned to compare prices so that I can get the lowest one possible.

No doubt, this blog is really helpful for the people who are travel lovers. However, the problem to these people is the high expenses of staying and other travel accommodations. Definitely, this is very beneficial for them to save their hotel charges. But, I want to tell you something about Goflyla. Goflyla is an emerging website in world, so you can also try Goflyla for booking hotels and other travel requirements at lower rates as we have the best travel partners. Hotels.com is one of them which offers the various Hotels com discount code to help its users to find the affordable hotels with great services.

There are ample of options available to book hotels in cheap prices but from my point of view the best way to book hotels through mobile devices is by downloading different travelling apps which you can compare each of them in respect to their prices and their services too.

I love your tips for booking a hotel. It makes sense that it’s smart to compare prices found on a third party site to the official hotel’s sight. I’ve never thought about that before! My wife and I want to travel this summer, so we’ll definitely remember that.

Nice tips, thanks. What’s your opinion on booking flight and hotel separately, ot in a package that many travel booking sites offer? Thanks

I found it helpful when you explained that it can be a good idea to use discount coupons when booking a hotel. My wife and I are wanting to take a short road trip to visit her sister for a couple of days. We were thinking it would be a good idea for us to stay in a hotel one night, so these tips you shared will be very helpful to us.

Thanks for this overview – for flights I use http://www.skyscanner.com which is pretty easy to use and gives a lot of options. For hotels I use http://www.privateupgrades.com which is a alternative to FHR with better customer support. Hope the crisis is over soon and we can read many more of your helpful reviews soon!

I use https://www.getaroom.co.uk which has a great range of hotels, apartment and holiday rentals plus a clever price checker which keeps an eye on prices for you.
