The Whitlams Black Stump Share Resounding Debut Album ‘Kookaburra’

“Country music has a strong sense of time and place, so clothing my stories in a country music coat seemed like a natural progression to me.”

More The Whitlams

After more than three decades as one of Australia’s best and most iconic indie-rock bands, Tim Freedman and The Whitlams have officially marked a new era with their debut album as The Whitlams Black Stump : the transformative and kaleidoscopic Kookaburra .

It also marks a shift in sound for the revered quintet, inspired heavily by the country music Freedman was moved by on drives along backroads between Gunnedah and Dubbo, Orange and Tamworth. “I am a parochial lyric writer,” Freedman noted in a press release, “and country music has a strong sense of time and place, so clothing my stories in a country music coat seemed like a natural progression to me. I had to scratch that itch and investigate.”

Kookaburra stands as a heartfelt ode to country, but as Freedman explained, it’s also a heartfelt ode to the country: “Even though I have inner-city indie DNA, I do feel that when I play a particular selection of my songs, solo in a country town, that I am particularly Australian. I’m giving them something especially local, as opposed to generic. When all those people come in who have heard me on ABC local radio over the years, one of the reasons they are there is because they appreciate songs about their own culture.”

The album itself came together over a “feverish” four days in the studio, with the crew including producers Matt Fell (who also played bass) and Rod McCormack (who played banjo and guitar), as well as Ollie Thorpe on pedal steel, Terepai Richmond on drums and George Washingmachine on the fiddle. In addition to the ripping new song Fallen Leaves , the tracklist sports a spread of classic Whitlams songs shone through a bright new lens, and showstopping covers of tracks by Neil Young , Bernie Hayes and Perry Keyes .

Touching on why he chose to cover the lattermost artist’s 2003 tune The Day John Sattler Broke His Jaw , Freedman declared it “probably the best inner western country song there is”. He added, “The next best is my favourite Bernie Hayes song, Your Boyfriend’s Back In Town , which is a title that was crying out to become a country song.”

As for how The Whitlams’ own tracks have been given new life, Freedman noted: “One important technical aspect of the album is that when I am redoing a Whitlams song they are now sung in a lower register than they used to be. As you get older your voice lowers, and it’s more natural to be able to convey them now in an age-appropriate key. I can unleash the crooner within!”

To accompany Kookaburra , The Whitlams Black Stump are heading out on a massive national tour, kicking off tonight (March 8) at Lizotte’s in Newcastle. All up there are 23 dates on the itinerary, rolling on through to the start of June – head here for info on all the shows they’ve got coming up. Then head here to get your ears around Kookaburra.

Kookaburra follows the release of The Whitlams’ 2022 album Sancho , which itself came as their first full-length effort in 16 years (following 2006’s Little Cloud ). In a four-star review for TheMusic.com.au , Liz Giuffre called that last release “a mixed bag rather than a themed album”, and noted that “while there are flashes of the different ‘types’ of Whitlams of the past, Sancho carves its own path”.

Reviewing one of The Whitlams’ live shows in 2022, David James Young wrote: “A perfect balance is struck across the play-through – each song remains as emotive and vital as the first time you heard it, but the tweaks and twists along the way allow for the album as a whole to be appreciated in a new light.”

The Whitlams Black Stump

The Whitlams Black Stump

The Whitlams Black Stump formed in 2021 and sees Tim Freedman and long-time Whitlams drummer Terepai Richmond joined by an A Team of roots musicians, reconstructing the best of The Whitlams’ repertoire with an assortment of new songs and classic Americana.

The five-piece band features Rod McCormack and Matt Fell, two CMAA Producers of the Year, on banjo and bass, and young gun Ollie Thorpe on electric and pedal steel guitar.

The act debuted at the Tamworth Country Music Festival in 2022, and then wound its way down the East Coast in a three week tour that bonded their musical chemistry. The next step was selling out the capital cities on the Big City Debut tour, all the while chipping away at a debut album out February 2024.

The themes of the group’s repertoire are proudly parochial. Rarely have Australian stories sounded so good on American instruments as when The Whitlams Black Stump casts forth tales of John Sattler’s jaw, of Ned Kelly’s sister Kate, and of our national impulse to blow up the pokies.

Tim Freedman fronts the Whitlams, Black Stump Band performing at the Victoria in Bathurst on their regional tour

Country detour brings out the Whitlams’ Black Stump ballads

As the pandemic shut down Sydney venues, Tim Freedman headed inland and found his city songs were perfectly at home in the country

While doing a soundcheck before a beer garden gig in the back of the Victoria pub in Bathurst, the Whitlams’ Tim Freedman sits at an old Victor piano.

“I tell you what, it needs a tune,” he says.

To prove the point he runs his fingers over the keys. It sounds like a cutlery drawer pushed off a cliff.

Freedman is touring the regions with the Whitlams, Black Stump Band, one of the more unexpected outcomes of the Covid pandemic.

The Whitlams – one of the definitive Sydney bands – has gone country.

Two days prior, at the Longyard hotel in Tamworth during the 50th annual Country music festival in April, the group launched their single The Day John Sattler Broke His Jaw , a song written by Freedman’s friend Perry Keyes , who he’s has called “ an authentic voice from a disappearing world ”.

With its themes of workers’ struggle and rugby league, the Redfern singer-songwriter has created a classic piece of Aussie narrative songwriting that transfers perfectly to country music.

A chorus that quotes NRL commentator Frank Hyde’s “if it’s high enough, if it’s long enough, if it’s straight between the posts” is tailor-made to be sung by schooner-wielding pub patrons across the land.

The twist is that the Black Stump version – with its “twangy” Telecaster guitar and bubbling banjo – is country music. It’s a surprising creative detour that started with an actual detour in the depths of Sydney Covid lockdowns.

‘Amazing’ country pianos

With a lack of available music venues in Sydney during 2021, Freedman threw his electric piano in the back of the car and, like so many city slickers during the pandemic, headed inland.

“I’ve never toured regionally, solo, before,” he says. “I’d always just done gigs in the cities.”

“It was definitely due to circumstances of the lockdown – anyone who played in a band basically didn’t work for 18 months.”

The tour inland had him doing his “cabaret thing” in pubs and halls: “I just met all these amazing pianos in different country towns.

“I’m now on these country roads between Bathurst, Gunnedah, Tamworth, and the reception that I got from the audiences made me start thinking that I wanted to do it a lot more,” he says.

“To actually make some country music that would allow me to just travel the country in much wider circles than I had been getting used to.”

The Whitlams, Black Stump Band performing at the Victoria, Bathurst on their recent regional tour.

Somewhere on the Black Stump Way, between Gunnedah and Mudgee, Freedman was surprised to hear the Whitlams’ single Man About a Dog on country music radio.

The song was inspired by Freedman driving around a landscape turning green as the drought broke, something that clearly resonated with country listeners.

“I have a house in Broken Head,” he says, “and it was just at the end of the drought, about two months before the Covid lockdowns hit in January 2020. I was driving through the hills to visit a friend, and it was just bursting full of life because the rain had fallen very recently.”

When he got home, Freedman recalls feeling “innervated by nature… I thought I’d really love to write a song about driving through the hills,” he says.

“I didn’t expect to be played on the Kix Network , and Triple a Murri Country , a great Indigenous country station which is programmed out of Brisbane.”

Freedman describes his country tour as “really ennobling”.

“I played to this wonderful crowd in Mudgee, a winery on a Sunday afternoon with the dappled sun coming through the trees; and it was at a lovely old German piano – everything felt bucolic and authentic.”

When Freedman got back to Sydney after his rural tour, he called producer and bassist Matt Fell , and got together banjo, papoose and acoustic guitarist Rod McCormack , pedal steel guitarist Ollie Thorpe , and longtime Whitlams drummer Terepai Richmond to put together some country tracks.

The Whitlams, Black Stump Band was born, and Freedman describes their gig at Bathurst’s Victoria pub as “a lot of fun”.

“It’s one of those great establishments where some young people have taken over an old pub, cleaned it up, and gotten rid of the poker machines,” he says.

It’s a cause he’s still very much behind, and the group is set to do a country cover of Blow Up the Pokies for an upcoming Wesley Mission campaign.
