At 639 square miles (1,656 square kilometres), the Isle of Skye is the second-largest Island in Scotland after Lewis and Harris and boasts some of the most dramatic mountain and coastal scenery in the UK. The Island has been occupied since the Mesolithic period (7th millennium BC) by, variously, Celtic tribes including the Picts and the Gaels, Scandinavian Vikings and the powerful Norse-Gael clans of MacLeod and MacDonald.

Skye belonged to Norway until the Perth Treaty of 1266 transferred sovereignty to Scotland. Thereafter, the 18th-century Jacobite uprisings led to the breaking-up of the clan system and the subsequent ‘Clearances’ replaced entire communities with sheep farms. This involved forced emigrations to distant lands. Resident numbers declined from over 20,000 in the early 19th century to just under 9,000 by 1999. Today the population hovers around 10,000. The ancient Gaelic language is still spoken throughout the Island and all road signs are bilingual. The main industries are tourism, agriculture, fishing and whisky-distilling. The climate is mild, wet and windy - but when the sun shines, there is nowhere more beautiful on Earth. The abundant wildlife includes Golden Eagles, Sea Eagles and Red Deer.

Isle of Skye

A legendary landscape.

Skye . She doesn’t do things halfway.

Here, weathered stone rings whisper of ancient rituals. Castles sigh over their own ruinous state, welcoming your admiration over all they’ve endured. The landscapes yawn out before you as if consuming the entire world.

There is nothing beyond the Isle of Skye. Or that’s how it feels, at least.

Footprints long since washed away still make up the land you see before you. The influence of so many over time , from the Scots to their invaders, from travellers to the animals who call this land home. It’s a landscape of unfathomable beauty, of sheer rock peaks and powerful moments that stay with you long after you’ve gone.

Neist Point

The most epic lighthouse you could imagine. It clings to a jagged, winding headland, and shines bright in luminous white.

1 Day Isle of Skye with Fairy Pools Tour from Inverness

1 Day Isle of Skye with Fairy Pools Tour from Inverness

An amazing 1-day journey that visits the most popular places of Scotland, including Loch Ness, Eilean Donan Castle, and the Isle of Skye.

tour bus skye

Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle

On the shores of Loch Ness you will be told stories of “Nessie”, of the Great Glen boundary fault, and of the mighty Urquhart Castle.

The Great Glen is a huge valley in the Highlands, eroded by glaciers more than 10,000 years ago. These glaciers carved the valley, forming a series of deep lakes, among which is Loch Ness.

Urquhart Castle saw great conflict during its 500 years as a Middle-ages fortress. Control of the castle passed back and forth between the Scots and English during the Wars of Independence.

The Five Sister of Kintail and Glen Shiel

The Five Sisters of Kintail are hills: Sgurr nan Spainteach, Sgurr na Ciste Duibhe, Sgurr na Carnach, Sgurr Fhuaran, Sgurr nan Saighead.

Landscapes are unforgettable and the history of this place is unique. Here is where the Battle of Glen Shiel took place in 1719, between the Jacobite, supported by 300 Spanish troops; and a government army loyal to King George I. Despite their superior numbers, the Jacobite lost. Among various others, Rob Roy, fought amongst the Jacobite.

Eilean Donan Castle

Eilean Donan Castle is said to be the most photographed castle in Scotland, and once you have seen it for yourself, sitting majestically in the middle of 3 different Lochs: Duich, Alsh and Long, you will understand why! The stronghold of the clan MacRae has been used as filming location in James Bond’s “The world is not enough”, and in countless other movies.

Skye Bridge

We drive across the Skye Bridge, making our way “over the sea to Skye”. The views from the Bridge can be far-reaching and spectacular – catch your first glimpse of the mighty Cuillin Mountains as we drive over the bridge.

The Cuillins

Take in the stunning views of the Cuillin Mountains. The Black Cuillin Ridge was formed 60 million years ago and is the remnant of an eroded magma chamber of a huge volcano. Consisting mainly of hard gabbro and basalt rock, the ridge was sculpted into its current form by glacial activity and subsequent weathering over the millennia, which created the unique jagged character of the Ridge. The Red Cuillin have a rounded appearance, due to being mainly composed of granite, which is softer than gabbro, hence less resistant to the glaciers.

Fairy Pools

We continue on our journey in the shadow of the Cuillin Mountains. Walk with the supernaturals through fairy-sized landscapes and their most famous baths, the Fairy Pools. For this part of the tour, you must take the fairy oath. Please wear waterproof clothing and footwear, as we travel to fairy land by going underneath waterfalls. The pools are located in one of the most dramatic landscapes on Skye. The fairies regularly bathe here, in the crystal clear green pools of the River Brittle. Weather permitting, you can swim in the pools of the river, one of the UK’s best wild swimming spots. Have fun diving under natural arches and waterfalls, but please do not spy on the fairies, as they can easily take offence!

We in no way endorse swimming in the pools and it is done entirely at your own risk .

Talisker Distillery

Talisker distillery based in Carbost is one of the three whisky distillery on the Isle of Skye, the oldest working distillery on the Isle of Skye. Set on the shores of Loch Harport with dramatic views of the Cuillin mountains. Producing an alluring, sweet, full-bodied single malt is so easy to enjoy, and like Skye itself, so hard to leave. We shall go through the visitor center (not on the tour) and if available sample one of the fine whiskeys produced here.

The village of Portree is situated on the east side of Skye overlooking a sheltered bay, and it is the main town of the island.

Portree was first established as a fishing village at the beginning of the 19th century by Lord MacDonald. The name of the town of Portree commemorates the visit of King James the V in 1540. Records have it that it was originally called Portray and was believed to have been inhabited as far back as the Mesolithic period. Its name really comes from the Gaelic for Port on the Slope.

As we arrive back on the mainland our route back to Inverness then takes us across a large expanse of wilderness, before returning to the city for drop off at the Cathedral.

  • Please bring suitable waterproof clothing and good footwear – the weather can change quickly in the north west, and a rain jacket may be needed even if it is bright and sunny when we leave.
  • Minibus travel: 8, 16 or 29-seat vehicles, depending on the group size

22/03/23 – Helen and Whitney-May

This was just the most wonderful experience and I would like to commend you and Jerry (our tour guide) on what will likely be the absolute highlight of our trip to the UK (we still have a little while here but you’re going to be hard to beat!) A million thank you’s for this experience. It was all round amazing, from every annoying enquiry I sent last minute to the office, through to the on-the-ground offering. The carefully researched commentary, lovely bus, caring on time guest service levels provided by Jerry and well, the scenery -though not your making 🙂 –  was next level heavenly. I cannot recommend your tour more highly! Warm regards.

17/03/23 – Taylor

We LOVED our tour with Discover Scotland! Our guide Michael was amazing we could not have ask for anyone better. We enjoyed our whole trip from the bus rides hearing stories, history, songs and much more about Scotland, to our quick picture stops, all our longer spots where we had time to explore, and our free time in Kyleakin.  We felt like our interests were heard by our guide and we were given options and suggestions to do things we would enjoy.  The only thing we wished we could change was staying longer. We are very thankful for our guide and discover scotland for everything. Thanks for everything

02 /11/ 22 – Sergio

We had an amazing time! John our guide was perfect! I can’t say enough good things about him! He obviously loves his job and the island.  I appreciated how you kept in touch with me leading up to the tour and how responsive and clearly  you answered my questions. I will most definitely recommend John Black and your company to everyone willing to hear me go on about what an amazing experience we had. Thank you for everything and with some luck we will be making more plans with your company.

19/08/22 – Kylie + Corbin

Our 3-day Isle of Skye tour with Scott was unforgettable! Despite road closures to start the trip, Scott maintained positivity that radiated throughout the group. Each day brought adventure and memories that we will always cherish. It’s easy to see that Scott loves people and Scotland as he went out of his way to make sure everyone got to see and do what they set out to. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience and guide!

02/08/22 – Angelina

My friends and I recently went on the Isle of Skye, Highlands, and Loch Ness 3-day tour from Edinburgh, and it was the highlight of our vacation! Our tour guide, John Black, was quite the character. Throughout the whole trip, he was super cheery and always cracking jokes. His personal anecdotes, vast knowledge, and captivating story-telling provided us with a unique glimpse into the Scottish people, culture, and history. John was extremely accommodating for everyone on the tour, making frequent stops for bathroom breaks and food throughout the day. The bus itself was very comfortable, with AC and plenty of space for everyone, and had great views no matter where one sat. Our accommodation was booked through Discover Scotland as well, at Winklebeech bnb in Kyleakin. It had a quaint and homey vibe, and the owner was super welcoming. She was also extremely accommodating to our dietary restrictions and even offered us some bug spray after seeing all of our midge bites! The rooms were tidy and comfortable, with all the necessities one may need. We managed to hit all the destinations on the tour, and it ran very smoothly with no delays. We were especially in awe with the Isle of Skye- It’s a must-see for everyone who visits Scotland! Overall, I would HIGHLY recommend Discover Scotland Tours and would visit again in a heartbeat!

We had a wonderful time and it was through this tour that Scotland came alive for us. Our Tour Leader made a point of getting to know each of us. In between the gorgeous countryside and  the historical background Michael provided, he played songs told amusing stories and made it us feel like we were all part of one family. There were lots of stops for the bathroom and food as well. He was patient answering all of our questions and was respectful of the country’s we came from. We loved this tour and will be talking about it for quite some time. Also good value for our money.

11/07/22 – Darryl

We were very happy with our three day tour. This being our first, and probably only trip to Scotland, we appreciated the variety of things we saw and the general information about your country.

We were especially impressed with our tour guide, John Sheedy. In addition to being an all-around nice guy, he was very attentive to everyone’s needs and well prepared with interesting stories. Having grown up on the isle of Skye was a bonus. John conveyed his genuine love and pride of Scotland and made our trip fun and comfortable.

Mark and I had THE BEST weekend. It’s my first time in Scotland, and although it was a whirlwind, I’m excited to get back and spend more time in certain places. Accommodation was great, Garry was FANTASTIC. So warm and bubbly and knowledgeable and fun.  We’re both quite introverted and I was overwhelmed and missing my children and we never once felt pressured or intruded on, but also Garry made us both feel so seen and included, I was so grateful for how he handled us. Lots of stops, would be good to have a bit more time in some places, but I also really liked ticking lots of things off my list. It was also really relaxing, I slept on the bus all the time – as a parent it was just so lovely to not have to worry about ANYTHING.  Garry added a few fun things in that I wasn’t expecting which was so great! Lots of Harry Potter stops! A DINOSAUR FOOTPRINT! I just loved every minute.  I would do it again in a heartbeat. I hope you add some northern Scotland tours! Let me know if you do.

10/06/22 – Gráinne

My tour was the Isle of Skye, the Highlands & Loch Ness 3 day tour with Gary. The itinerary was great. Loved all the stops. Loads of time at each stop , didn’t feel rushed. Our tour guide, Gary, was fantastic. He had loads of fun facts and quips and kept us all motivated even though the weather was against us. Will definitely recommend Gary and the tour to anyone!

Where does the tour stay overnight?

Situated on the east coast of Skye is the fishing village of Kyleakin and this is where we stay for both nights of our tour. During peak season some of our passengers may be allocated accommodation in the villages nearby to Kyleakin.

The village has some restaurants for evening dining and a shop should you require any necessities.

What about my accommodation?

Your tour excludes accommodation. During the tour booking process you will be asked if you are booking your own accommodation or whether you wish us to reserve this on your behalf?

Booking my own accommodation

If booking your own accommodation this should be in the village of Kyleakin where most of our customers will be staying. The nearby villages of Breakish or Broadford is fine, however some accommodation providers are situated on roads that even our small coaches cannot get down, so please check with us first at [email protected]

Please contact us to let us know the name of the accommodation you have reserved.

I want Discover Scotland Tours to book my accommodation

We’ll reserve your accommodation and let you know the name of where you are staying. You pay the accommodation provider directly.

Some accommodation providers don’t accept credit cards and only take cash. We will inform you of this when we confirm your named accommodation.

Accommodation Guide Price

We provide a guide price as each establishment has their own pricing structure. We allocate accommodation on a first come first served basis. An exact cost will be confirmed once you have booked and we can confirm what is available.

All B&B’s we book on your behalf have private bathroom facilities. Most rooms are en-suite while others have a private bathroom outside the bedroom.

B&B Double/twin room: £120.00 – £150.00 per room per night based on 2 people sharing.

B&B Single occupancy: £105.00 – £130.00 per room per night

Hostel We do not reserve hostel accommodation but we can provide guidance on where passengers may wish to book. There is an option to request information on hostels at the time of booking.

How much luggage can I bring?

This is limited to one piece of luggage (like an airline cabin bag) with a maximum weight of 15kg per person. For guidance, measurements should be no more than 65cm x 45cm x 30cm / 25in x 18in x 12in. You are allowed one small carry-on bag for onboard personal items.

If you require to store luggage while on tour you may choose  to use luggage facilities. You’ll find these in both Glasgow and Edinburgh Train Stations and Edinburgh Bus Station.

Will we be dropped off and picked up at our accommodation?

Yes while on Skye, your Tour Leader will drop you off each evening and collect you at a agreed time each morning.

Above all, please ensure you are ready in plenty of time each morning.

Will I be able to pay by credit card while on tour?

In the Scottish Highlands many businesses do not accept card; particularly in rural areas where mobile signals are not very strong. Your driver will also take cash payment for any optional extras. Therefore, it is best to bring cash with you.

There are cash machines on route should you require to take out money while on tour.

Can I reserve a specific seat on the mini coach?

Seats are chosen on a first come first serve basis, we are unable to take requests for specific seats. Our mini coaches all have panoramic windows so the beautiful Scottish landscape can always be enjoyed, no matter where you sit.

If you suffer from motion sickness, then you may be affected by the roads in Scotland. They can be twisty and narrow. It’s best to come prepared with a travel sickness preventative, whether that be medicinal, wristbands or another option, to ensure it doesn’t impact your overall enjoyment of the tour.

Isle of Skye Tour from Inverness Itinerary

We depart Inverness at 8.am and travel the length of the majestic Loch Ness; thus, a great start to our Isle of Skye Tour from Inverness.

The world-famous Loch is home to ‘Nessie’ or the ‘Loch ness Monster’ as she’s sometimes known.

Cameras at the ready! Sightings of ‘Nessie’ are not as rare as you may think.

On the shores of the loch is a unique Castle and an ideal photo opportunity. Urquart Castle dates back to the 6th century and is steeped in history and legend.

Perhaps the most photographed castle in Scotland. Eilean Donan Castle has featured in many movies and TV shows, including ‘Highlander’ and ‘James Bond’ to name only a couple. One of my favourite folklore tales is of the origins of the Castle and travelling the glen telling you the story is something I always look forward to.

After coffee, we cross the Skye Bridge onto the magical ‘Misty Isle.’

The largest of the Inner Hebrides, Skye has attracted travellers from the late 18th century and has many hidden treasures and legends.

Our Skye adventure has only just started!

The “Misty Isle” holds many incredible visitor experiences and unique sites. Because of this, it’s actually impossible to do Skye justice with a mere description.

On our private tour, I shall endeavour to paint the same picture of Skye that my Father painted for me.

Tales of Warriors, Kings, Princes’s, Faeries and Giants, are literally around every corner on the Isle of Skye.

The Fairy Pools

The Fairy Pools of Skye are magical, crystal clear pools of water and a fantastic walk.

One of our first stops is the Fairy Pools of Skye. A walk is possible and even a swim for those brave enough to enter the faerie waters.

Portree Village

The beautiful village of Portree is our lunch stop.

Fantastic local shops and eateries give us all the opportunity to taste lovely local produce and buy snacks for our epic journey around the Trotternish Peninsula.

The Old Man of Storr is an incredible stop on our tours of the Isle of Skye from Inverness.

Wonder at ‘The Old Man of Storr’ and the Trotternish Peninsula.

Whether the Faeries or landslips created the landscape here, we’ll leave that for you to decide.

Another great Skye legend is the actual making of the pinnacle known as the ‘Old Man of Storr’

We love to share a tale with you on our travels around the island or even as we walk up the Storr to gaze across the Minch.

The world-famous fairy tale landscape of the Quiraing is awe-inspiring. Hike for the best views across the Minch.

Mealt Water Fall and Kilt Rock, are a wonderful example of Skye’s Jurassic landscapes, and an impressive waterfall which plummets into the ocean.

The Fairy Glen on the Isle of Skye is a magical stop on our tours from Inverness.

When the wind blows, the Bag Pipes’ ghostly rasp can still be heard echoing from the Faerie Kingdom’s deep chambers.

Join us on a private tour and breath in Skye’s sea air and gaze across the highlands and islands of Scotland.

The Atlantic Ocean and islands make the most impressive backdrop for a magical journey.

The Isle of Skye’s rugged coastline is the perfect place to hear some local history, folklore and legends.

Many believe ‘faeries’ are still with us! Just out of sight, behind a thin veil of mist.

Standing here, immersed in the landscape of the” Quiraing” or the mystery of the “Fairy Glen” and its easy to see why.

Private tours are designed around you and your travelling companions.

A hike up the ‘Storr’ or you may prefer more time in the fishing village of Portree!

Complete flexibility is only one of the many benefits of a private guide and transport.

Local knowledge of where to go if the weather turns, or how best to avoid the crowds in busier months, a huge advantage of the private Isle of Skye Tours from Inverness.

In summary, private guided tours of Scotland are a unique and relaxed way to explore.

Moscow: City Sightseeing by Car/Bus

Visiting a new city is akin to going on a first date, it is something you will never forget. Many people imagine Moscow as just a bunch of sporadic landmarks: Red Square, the Kremlin, Lenin’s Mausoleum and GUM. There is so much more to this wonderful city than that and even though we only have a few hours, we will do all we can to show you everything we know and love about our capital in one fell swoop. We will take you on a journey through the ages, from centuries ago, right up to the modern day, soaking in the sights of this vast and bustling metropolis. Bright, luxurious and both ancient and modern at the same time, Moscow invites you on a date you’ll never forget!

On our sightseeing bus tour of the city, you will see:

  • The wonderfully historic city centre and its unique museums, magnificent cathedrals, the exquisite Chambers of the Romanov Boyars and of course, the famous towering red brick walls of the Kremlin, The charming beauty of the Alexander Garden awaits the capital's guests - a lush green oasis in the midst of the glass and concrete clad metropolis, basking in the etherial aura emanating from the whitewashed stone walls of the restored Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the world- renowned fairytale onion domes of St. Basil's Cathedral and other impressive monumental buildings such as the library built in Lenin's honour - the Russian State Library - and the State Duma.
  • The Lubyanka KGB headquarters is notorious to members of older generations and although nowadays, the face of the secret police has changed dramatically, the looming enigmatic building on the waterfront maintains its aura of mystery, shrouded in a variety of murky rumours and dark myths. Then, there’s another of Moscow's main attractions - the marvellous Bolshoi Theatre, yew simply cant leave Moscow without taking in its breathtaking architecture. Engrained in the fabric of Russia's cultural heritage, virtuoso performers such as prima ballerina Galina Ulanova, opera singer Feodor Chaliapin and pianist, composer and conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff once stood centre stage of this vaunted institution.
  • The memorial complex on Poklonnaya Hill was constructed in the glory and honour of our heroes who defended our nation in the many crucial battles of the Great Patriotic War (WWII). This is a place that embodies a particularly acute and inextricable link between older ancf younger generations. Moving on to the Moscow International Business Centre, not dubbed ‘Moscow City' for nothing, a true glimpse of the future in the present. This incredible, rather jaw-dropping project in the capital has shown that Moscow has come to accept the age of the skyscraper. Finally, the stunning views from the observation deck at Sparrow Hills will leave professional and amateur photographers alike itching to capture them. How could one resist?

The most beautiful of all the world's cities - lady Moscow invites you out on a date!

McCormick, other Republicans launch bus tour in Erie, as race shifts to general election

tour bus skye

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Dave McCormick and GOP candidates for a state row office kicked off the general election in Erie County Wednesday morning as part of a six-city, two-day bus tour.

Treasurer Stacy Garritty and Auditor Tim DeFoor, both incumbents, joined Dave McCormick and others at a post-primary campaign event at Voodoo Brewing Co., 101 Boston Store Place, to tell supporters how critical the Nov. 5 election will be for the future of the state and country, and encourage them to get hesitant friends, family members and neighbors off the sidelines to vote — even if it means casting a mail-in ballot, which the party had widely shunned since the 2020 presidential election.

"If we don't take back America this go-around, I'm not sure what will be left four years from now," said state Sen. Dan Laughlin, R-49th Dist., who was among several Republicans to make statements to the audience ahead of McCormick.

Laughlin noted that his Senate seat is a top target of Democrats as they attempt to hold onto their slim majority in the state House and take control of the upper chamber. McCormick's bid to unseat three-term incumbent Democrat Sen. Bob Casey Jr., he added, could allow the GOP to retake the U.S. Senate.

McCormick, who ran in 2022 for the seat formerly held by Republican Patrick Toomey, took aim at both Casey and the man who went on to win Toomey's seat, Sen. John Fetterman.

"We've got one who won't wear a suit," McCormick said, referring to Fetterman, "and another who is an empty suit."

The group of Republicans criticized President Joe Biden for his handling of the southern border and blamed him for post-pandemic inflation. They said Casey has been in lockstep with Biden on a "war on energy."

McCormick, who served in the U.S. Treasury Department during George W. Bush's presidency and is the former CEO of one of the world's largest hedge funds, easily secured his party's nomination Tuesday after coming up short in 2022 to Dr. Mehmet Oz, who went on to lose to Fetterman. Casey, seeking a fourth, six-year term, also sailed to an easy win.

"All of you are here for the same reason that we're running because you're worried," McCormick said. "You're worried that the country you love is slipping away. You're worried you're going to wake up sometime soon and not recognize the America that we see. We're in trouble."

U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly, R-16th Dist., said McCormick has "impeccable character" and compared him to former President Donald Trump, the party's presumptive nominee, saying neither McCormick nor Trump needed to leave lucrative careers but felt compelled to out of service to their country.

Garritty, the state treasurer who's seeking a second term, made no mention Wednesday of her opponent, Allegheny County small businesswoman Erin McClelland or state Rep. Ryan Bizzarro, the Erie Democrat who many had expected to win his party's nomination. McClelland scored an upset Tuesday in topping Bizzarro for the Democratic nomination. Bizzarro, who is also seeking re-election to his House seat, had the endorsement of the state party and a slew of labor unions and other political organizations in the treasurer's race.

"Democrats want to live in the past," Garrity said at one point. "Let's leave them in the past."

Both Erie County Republican Party Chairman Tom Eddy and state Sen. Scott Hutchinson were in attendance.

Republican Attorney General candidate Dave Sunday did not attend the Erie event Wednesday, but was expected to join the GOP slate in stops in Washington and Altoona in the afternoon. The bus tour continues Thursday in Harrisburg, Wilkes-Barre and Media.
