About The Tour
The Tour de Steamboat is an annual bicycle event that brings together 1,200 cyclists for a one-day ride through beautiful Northwest Colorado. We host three different road ride routes—26, 46, and 66. We also host 2 gravel routes, a 100 mile, and a new 50 Mile route. See our Routes page for more details. There is something for riders of all ages and abilities. We are a non-competitive event, and participants are encouraged to ride at their own pace and enjoy the majestic scenery in our part of the world! We offer superb aid stations, support, and end of the ride barbecue and craft beer garden.
All proceeds from the Tour de Steamboat go directly to our beneficiary non-profits.
The Tour de Steamboat is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit entity with its entire focus on raising money for local, Routt County community non-profit organizations. These beneficiary agencies provide staff to plan and market the event, implement additional fundraising mechanisms, and assist with event operations. The beneficiaries are also committed to paying it forward. Every year, the beneficiary non-profits choose other local beneficiary organizations to receive a portion of the event proceeds.

Announcing the 37th Tour of the Gila, introducing our 2024 race director
The 37th edition of Tour of the Gila is planned for April 24-28, 2024. The UCI- and USA-Cycling-sanctioned American bicycle race also introduces Michael Engleman as the 2024 Race Director.
The nonprofit Gila Community and Tourism Development, which organizes Tour of the Gila, will again offer the five-stage UCI-sanctioned races for women’s and men’s pro and amateur-elite teams from across the globe. “The Tour of the Gila UCI races should be bigger than ever,” Engleman asserts, listing Tashkent City Women’s Pro Cycling Team and Project Echelon as examples of teams that will participate in the 2024 event.
Plus, to better accommodate amateur racers, the race organization is considering changes to the USA Cycling categories. Tour of the Gila may adjust the format based on a USA Cycling study that names scheduling as a common barrier to participation. “Since the race’s inception in 1987, competitive cyclists at every level have targeted Tour of the Gila as the ride of a lifetime. We want to ensure our event remains accessible to racers in non-pro categories,” Engleman says, offering further clarification. “The goal is not to cut back on the amateur races but rather to attract even more riders by offering options that are do-able for the modern cyclist.”
Registration for the amateur races will open in January 2024. Interested riders may sign up to receive an email alert at that time by completing the form on the race’s homepage .
Director of Mission Sports Group, in Dolores, Colorado, Engleman has served as the Director of Competition for the UCI division of Tour of the Gila since 2012. So when longtime Race Director Jack Brennan again announced his retirement, Engleman took over the position to ensure continuity. “It’s wonderful having Michael leading us and moving us forward,” says Brennan, who is currently a board member. “He knows what Tour of the Gila means to racers and for cycling generally in the U.S. It’s an important race, and Michael helped build it.”
With an equestrian as well as a cycling background, Engleman carries the lessons he’s learned from horse training into professional sports, in which he has been involved for over 30 years as an athlete, coach and consultant. Engleman’s experience informs his perspective on Tour of the Gila, which is recognized as a key stepping stone for American cyclists striving toward World Tour racing careers and which is also vital to the careers of athletes from our neighboring Mexico and Canada as well as many other countries.
To support American stage racing, Tour of the Gila organizers are leading discussions with USA Cycling and its sponsors. “We do our part to support the sport’s growth by organizing the only UCI stage race that allows amateur races on the same roads on the same days,” Engleman says.

Tour Divide challenges a fixed course annually called the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route . Not only is the Great Divide Route a true classic, its 'primary track' is pursued with consistency by TD athletes so that year to year, finish times may always be compared directly to the record books .
The Great Divide Route is the world's longest off-pavement cycling route. It was tirelessly mapped over a 4 year span, and published in 1998 by Adventure Cycling Association, North America's premiere bicycle travel organization. The route is highlighted by long dirt roads and jeep trails that wend their way through forgotten passes of the Continental Divide . It travels through Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia, and the United States of Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico ( map ). By route's end a thru-rider will climb nearly 200,000 feet of vertical (equivalent to summiting Mount Everest from sea-level 7 times).
It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. –Ernest Hemingway
There's a cycling event in Colorado for every type of cyclist
Not every cycling event in Colorado is for lunatics though. For 35 years, Elephant Rock had been one of the largest and most respected cycling events in Colorado, drawing thousands of cyclists to Castle Rock, CO without including any mountain passes in its route. The event, held for the last time in 2022, was part of the Outside Events Cycling Series.
The Outside Cycling Series, which is now The Ride Collective , rolls camaraderie, challenge and community into stellar bike rides in the Front Range and beyond and includes premier bike rides such as:
- Copper Triangle.
- Tour of the Moon.
Copper Triangle in Summit County offers a classic alpine cycling course that was a word-of-mouth favorite of locals for many years before it became an organized event.
Tour of the Moon delivers a course featured in the movie American Flyers and made famous by the storied 1980s Coors Classic. The Tour of the Moon takes riders on a turn through the exotic Colorado National Monument and the high desert scenery around Grand Junction.
There are plenty of younger and well-established century rides and gran fondos in Colorado that appeal to the determined athlete and enthusiast, as well. They include bike rides such as:
- The Buffalo Bicycle Classic in Boulder.
- Colorado’s original and largest all-women’s bike ride Venus de Miles , up in Lyons.
- The Denver Century Ride in, you guessed it, the Mile High City.
If you're a gravel lover, The Ride Collective also presents two gravel events — the high alpine Crooked Gravel and the high desert Wild Horse Gravel — which complement several other rugged, rutty, rocky, sandy and steep Colorado crunchy celebrations, including the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic with its gravel, mountain and road events.
Legendary Colorado cycling doesn't always involve a mountain summit
Colorado also abounds with several charity bike rides, including Pedaling 4 Parkinsons, the Tour de Cure supporting the American Diabetes Association and the Courage Classic in Summit County, which raises money for Children's Hospital Colorado.
There is also the Tour de Steamboat , in Steamboat Springs of course, which helps local, Routt County non-profits, and the Mountains to the Desert Classic in Telluride, which is the primary fundraiser for the Just for Kids Foundation.
Each of the charity rides attracts hundreds to thousands of riders each year without having to call upon the allure of intense pain.
But if you are a person who enjoys throwing yourself uphill and accumulating big numbers in cumulative elevation gain, these century rides are right up your hilly alley.
There’s the Stonewall Century in La Veta, CO. 102 miles, 7,500 feet of elevation gain, and the soul crushing backside of Cucharas Pass toward the end of the ride. The grade of this cruel climb includes a mile-long section exceeding 10 percent.
The Park 2 Park Challenge rides in with more than 11,200 feet of climbing in its 100 miles of brutality each July, but if you want elevation without lots of distance, the The Broadmoor Cycle to the Summit will give you just that each August — 4,275 feet of climbing in 12.42 miles as you race up Pikes Peak.
Clearly, Colorado’s cycling events and century rides attract hordes of cyclists wanting to test themselves on the steeps of the Rocky Mountains. But there are other century rides and bike events in Colorado that sing to the climbing soul without climbing a literal mountain.
The 719 Ride in Colorado springs is one of the most challenging single-day bicycle events in colorado
In fact, the 719 Ride in Colorado Springs is one of the most challenging single-day road cycling events in Colorado. With an Epic Climbing Score* of 127.82, there is no rest from the climbing. The amount of up is so ridiculous, it’s awesome!
The signature ride, a measly 71.9 miles, logs 9,190 feet of climbing and allows cyclists to earn points in the Gran Fondo category of the SUAREZ Gran Fondo National Series.
The physical and mental challenge at the 719 Ride is immense. But the beauty of the event is that riders can choose their own adventure.
The 719 Ride has 14 ride options from 14 miles to 200 miles that allow cyclists to do as much damage to their legs as their minds will allow. There’s even a do-it-yourself option , if you're not in Colorado or can’t make the ride start.
If you only do one bike event this year, you should choose the 719 Ride . It's a stunning experience. We recommend it 719%.
Participants in the 2023 719 Ride receive a discount of $7.19 on registration for The Broadmoor Cycle to the Summit, along with many other registration benefits .

What Have Past Riders Said about the 719 Ride?
"I have lived in COS for 23 years and have been an active runner and cyclist and can say this is one of the better events around. I love how it's truly community driven but still offers guys like myself a chance to rip some fast laps." — Cody Hill, SRM PowerMeters
"As far as I'm concerned, the 719 Ride is the ultimate event around." — Al Marshall, 6X I Cinque Giri Finisher (2018-2023)
"I have done the Triple Bypass, Copper Triangle, Mt. Evans Hill Climb, Elephant Rock, and Pikes Peak. 719 Ride is Number One!" — Mark Ayers, 2020 I Cinque Giri Finisher
"The most well organized, best signaged, friendliest ride I've done in CO - and I've done lots and lots of road cycle events over 40yrs in CO." — 2023 event participant (name withheld by request)
There is no way to beat the 719 Ride. If you disagree, you didn't do enough laps.

*Epic Climbing Score
The Epic Climbing Score (ECS) is a simple calculation for comparing the amount of climbing a bike event has. The equation is total elevation gain divided by total distance. The ECS doesn’t indicate one event is better than another, or even easier or harder. There are tons of factors and considerations that help make a century, gran fondo or other event fun, compelling and awesome to ride.
Comparing the 719 Ride ECS to Other Colorado Cycling Events
- The Broadmoor Cycle to the Summit — 4,725' of elevation gain in 12.4 miles. It's the King of Excess (380.43 ECS).
- Bob Cook Memorial Mount Evans Hill Climb — 7,000' of elevation gain in 28 miles. It is truly excessive (250 ECS).
- The 719 Ride (I Cinque Giri) — A five-lap celebration of elevation (127.82 of ECS)
- Park 2 Park Challenge — 11,251' of elevation gain in 99.4 miles. 113.19 ECS.
- Triple Bypass — 120 miles and three mountain passes for those who dare. 10,990' of total elevation gain. 91.58 ECS.
- Buffalo Cycling Classic Buff Epic — 102 miles. 8,729' of elevation gain. 85.58 ECS.
- Copper Triangle — 6,500' of elevation gain. Three mountain passes. 79 miles. 82.28 ECS.
- Stonewall Century — Out and back over Cucharas Pass. 102 miles and 7,500' of elevation gain. 73.53 ECS.
- Tour of the Moon — 64 miles. Three tunnels bored through solid rock. Nearly 4,000' of elevation gain. 61.68 ECS.
A Colorado Springs Original
First conceived and ridden in 2016, the 719 Ride aspires to be a bicycle event that contributes to the culture and community of Colorado Springs. FORZA Colorado Springs!
Riding in the draft of many great and long-established Colorado cycling events , this Colorado Springs Original hopes to become a positive part of the Colorado Springs tradition and identity while celebrating the tradition, lore and culture of cycling and helping set the pace for cycling fun in the Rocky Mountain region.
The 719 Ride is the official cycling event of the Rocky Mountain State Games and is an official partner event in the 2024 Suarez Gran Fondo National Series and 2024 Gran Fondo World Tour.

Stage four, the Queen stage of the race lived up to all the hype providing a pulsating finale on the finishing climb. The win and race lead were both up for grabs and it was Richard Carapaz (EF Education–EasyPost) who took the stage, but only just from the fast approaching Florian Lipowitz (Bora-Hansgrohe).
Behind the race for the overall was just as exciting as overnight leader Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) cracked opening the door for another young Spaniard Carlos Rodríguez (INEOS Grenadiers) to pull on the yellow jersey.
The final stage, stage five sees the race cover 150km around the town of Vernier so read on to find out where to watch the Tour de Romandie 2024 cycling action live, wherever you are in the world.

Tour de Romandie 2024 stages
The race starts with a very short 2.3km prologue which will be contested by the overall favorites, keen to install a pecking order early on, and the short TT specialists looking for a chance to gain a leaders jersey in a big stage race.
Stage one follows the next day and it’s a lumpy 165.7km from Château d’Oex to Fribourg which will likely end in a sprint finish, although there are very view big name sprinters on the start sheet.
Stage two is where the GC action will really kick off with two huge mountains and a summit finish at Salvan/Les Marécottes. This 10km final ascent, averaging 7.3%, has slopes maxing out at 14% so will be a proper test for the climbers.
Those same climbers will the next day have to take on the 15.5km continuously undulating time trial around Oron and utilise another skill needed to win a stage race.
Stage four from Saillon to Leysin is 151.7km and takes the riders into higher territory with five classified climbs including the 10km summit finish at the end.
After this the GC battle should be stitched up with just the laps around Vernier to contend with on the final stage which will likely end in a sprint.

2024 Tour of the Gila Stage Three Report
Stephens Increases Overall Lead, Stites Blasts Into Victory
Stephens Increases Overall Tour of the Gila Lead, Winning Tyrone Time Trial
Cynisca Cycling’s Lauren Stephens raced to victory in Tyrone for Stage 3 of the Tour of the Gila 2024. Having won on the same course in 2015, she improved her previous best time by 23 seconds. Her victory at the Tyrone Individual Time Trial also increased her lead on the General Classification by 2:01, ahead of Nadia Gontova on GC. The DNA Pro Cycling rider was fourth on the stage. Alia Shafi finished 51 seconds behind Stephens, clocking a time of 39:03; 23 seconds ahead of Cécile Lejeune, racing for the Steve Tilford Foundation, finishing with 33:26 in third.
“It was quite windy out there,” Stephens said after the finish. “It was a great ride; I couldn’t have asked for anything more.”
Emily Ehrlich had been the heavy favorite coming into the time trial, after winning the TT at the Redlands Bicycle Classic and two gold medals at the Pan American Track Championships. Speaking ahead of her
start, Ehrlich said, “I honestly feel it’s the best TT we have in the country. I’ve only done it once, obviously, but it’s my favorite. I really love it!”
Ehrlich started her TT strong, with her head down in the tight position she is accustomed to.
Unfortunately, the Virginia’s Blue Ridge Twenty24 rider crashed coming down the descent of the Little Burro on the way out. She was then forced to abandon the race due to injury. The team later confirmed Ehrlich suffered a broken collarbone and possibly other fractures and is “absolutely covered in road rash.” Ehrlich had been expected to win the stage; with Stephens admitting that once she had seen that Ehrlich had crashed, she had backed off her speed.
“I hope Emily is okay,” Stephens added. “I saw her when I came over the top of the climb, which reminded me to focus on safety first.”
Ehrlich was also expected to be a top contender at the Olympic trials in two weeks’ time. She has managed to send a message to the race organization, stating she is in good spirits, and doesn’t want people to worry about her. “She will be okay,” her team reassured.
At the end of the day, the GC saw a shake-up in the standings under Stephens and Nadia Gontova, who continue to sit in the top two spots. Alia Shafi moved into the top ten on GC, following her second-place finish for Fount Cycling Guild. Her teammate, Eleanor Wiseman, also moved up to fourth from tenth place as she heads into Saturday’s crit. PAS/Steve Tilford Foundation Racing’s Marcela Prieto slid down to fifth after finishing nineteenth on the stage. Cynisca Cycling’s Ashley Frye finished fourth, moving her into a podium position in third ahead of Saturday.
The UCI women race 27 laps at the Downtown Criterium presented by the Town of Silver City on Saturday starting at 1:30 MDT.
Stites Blasts Into Victory, Taking the Overall Lead at Tour of the Gila
At Tour of the Gila on Friday, Project Echelon’s Tyler Stites blasted through the finish, seizing the win with a time of 33:07 at the Tyrone Individual Time Trial presented by Freeport McMoran. He came close to the course record of 32:59 that was set by Levi Leipheimer in 2009. The current Pan Am Time Trial Champion, Walter Vargas, was second for Team Medellín, clocking a time of 33:18. Jonas Walton rounded the podium in third, finishing in 33:45 and moving into the lead of the Best Young Rider Classification.
Stites’s win marks the second stage win for the team at Tour of the Gila 2024, after winning four out of five stages at Redlands earlier this month. Stites takes over the GC with his victory with two stages
remaining. Team Medellín’s Wilmar Paredes had a tough day, finishing in 36:33 and sliding down to fourth on GC.
“It’s a tough course, the main goal was to win the stage and take the red which I accomplished,” Stites said. “I’m really happy about that. I definitely had my eye on the course record but came up short; it was a tough day out there. I was chasing Walter, which was my minute-man, so that was a good carrot to be chasing. I had him in sight so I had a good day.”
The 16.15-mile Individual Time Trial out-and-back course in Tyrone featured 1,188 feet (362 meters) of climbing. Straight out of the start house, the road pitches up for a Category 4 Little Burro climb, rapidly shifts into a fast descent passing the Freeport-McMoran Tyrone mine, the end of which signals the turn around to head back to the finish. Five miles before the finish, the Little Burro greets the riders again, this time descending at a gradient of 6-7% before streaming down into the finishing shoot.
Owen Wright of CS Velo Racing sat in the hot seat for most of the day, starting within the first 20 riders out of the start house. Wright clocked in at 34:02, enough to finish fifth. His teammate, Joshua Lebo, crossed the finish with his CS Velo team cheering him on, becoming the first rider to clock in under 34 minutes with 33:59 and ending up fourth on the stage.
The hot seat began to change rapidly once the final ten riders were coming in to the finish. Disappointment showed through the smile Vargas displayed as he talked about his performance. He had won the stage last year, and was hoping to defend his win, but still gave respect to Stites as he outshone him in Tyrone.
“This was a pretty demanding time trial, and the wind here is strong,” Vargas said. “I felt good and had good legs but Tyler [Stites] is also in very good form. I knew that he had won another race before Gila here in the United States, so he’s going very strong.”
Despite his loss on Friday, Vargas and Team Medellín look ahead to the final two stages, ready to battle for the GC.
“I’m sitting second on GC with two demanding stages to go, including the final that is a very, very hard stage,” Vargas said. “We hope to give everything and make it a good race on Sunday. Tomorrow, we have the crit, which is a fast and explosive one, so we will give it our all in these last two days.”
Stites won the Downtown Silver City Criterium in 2022, and expects the team to contest the sprint on Saturday before the final showdown Sunday. Important time bonuses will be available at the finish Saturday for the top three finishers, earning ten, six and four seconds respectively.
The pro men take the stage at 3:10 p.m. after a full day of amateur racing and following the pro women.

Pogačar beats Van der Poel in a dominant win at Liège–Bastogne–Liège classic

LIEGE, Belgium (AP) — Tadej Pogačar proved too strong for Mathieu Van der Poel as he won the Liège–Bastogne–Liège cycling classic with a solo breakaway on Sunday.
Pogačar attacked 35 kilometers (22 miles) out to win cycling’s oldest classic for the second time, after victory in 2021, and made up for last year when he broke his left wrist in a crash.
“I’m happy that I can finally win this race again,” the 25-year-old Slovenian said. “It’s beautiful to finish like this.”
The two-time Tour de France champion waved to the crowd as he approached the finish line well clear. French veteran Romain Bardet finished second and Van der Poel led a mass sprint to the line to finish third.
Liège–Bastogne–Liège is one of the five “monuments” in one-day cycling with the Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix, the Tour of Lombardy and Milan-San Remo. Van der Poel won Roubaix two weeks ago but has not won Liège and Lombardy.
Pogačar beat Van der Poel last year to win the Ronde van Vlaanderen (Tour of Flanders) and they have won six monuments each.
The 254.5-kilometer (157.8-mile) trek, starting and finishing in the eastern Belgian city of Liège in chilly conditions, featured 11 small hills and played to Pogačar’s elite climbing skills. He pulled ahead in a small group with Van der Poel one minute behind.
Van der Poel’s group caught Pogačar with 70 kilometers remaining to form a main peloton. But with Pogačar’s UAE Team Emirates setting a fast tempo at the front, Pogačar attacked again and no rival could catch him.
He clocked 6 hours, 13 minutes, 48 seconds with Bardet 1:39 behind and Van der Poel 2:02 back.

Tour of Turkey: Van den Broek secures overall win as final stage is neutralised
Merhawi Kudus and Paul Double round out final podium as riders roll through 105.4km on wet roads in Istanbul
The Tour of Turkey drew to a close on Sunday with a fully neutralised final stage in Istanbul after race organisers announced a curtailment of the route.
The announcement came through early in the morning of the closing stage 8, with organisers stating "Due to the slippery condition of the roads, it's been decided that stage 8 will be neutralised.
"The peloton will ride the planned route but only one lap instead of 5 and will proceed to Sultanahmet with the distinctive jersey holders at the front of the peloton."
As a result, the peloton tackled a rainy ride on wet roads in Istanbul, rolling over the final fourth-category hill of the race and across the line without any contest.
The neutralisation, which saw three laps of the closing circuit taken out as well as the final 20km, meant that there would be no final chance for the sprinters to grab a win on the tricky 5%, 600-metre closing ramp.
It also meant that yellow jersey Frank van den Broek (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) could finish his race without any threat of attack from podium sitters Merhawi Kudus (Terengganu) and Paul Double (Polti-Kometa).
23-year-old Van den Broek now comes away from the Tour of Turkey with his first career stage race victory under his belt after triumphing on the queen stage summit finish at Manisa on Friday. He beats Kudus by four seconds in the overall standings while Double takes third overall, nine seconds down.
Elsewhere, Van den Broek's DSM teammate Tobias Lund Andresen completes a near-perfect week for the team, himself having won three stages to go with Van den Broek's triumph and Fabio Jakobsen 's opening stage victory.
Andresen comes away with the points jersey, having overhauled Giovanni Lonardi (Polti-Kometa) with his third stage win on Saturday. Vinzent Dorn (Bike Aid) wins the mountain classification, while Q36.5 come away with the team prize.
Due to the slippery condition of the roads, it's been decided that stage 8 will be neutralised. The peloton will ride the planned route but only one lap instead of 5 and will proceed to Sultanahmet with the distinctive jerseys holders at the front of the peloton. #TUR2024 April 28, 2024
