From Thomas to Cavendish: Here’s Who Impressed Us at the Giro d’Italia

Primoz Roglic took home the maglia rosa, but he wasn’t the only one that made this Tour of Italy one to remember.

106th giro d'italia 2023 stage 21

Roglič and his Jumbo-Visma team rode a calculated race, letting other riders and teams do the lionshare of the work in defending the pink jersey, only taking it for themselves at the end of Stage 20, an 18.6km mountain time trial in which the Slovenian overcame a brief mechanical to win the stage by enough time over Great Britain’s Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers) to the maglia rosa once and for all. In the end, Roglič beat Thomas by just 14 seconds–which is now tied for the ninth-closest winning margin in grand tour history–and Portugal’s João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) by 1:15.

For Thomas–who had worn the pink jersey for eight days overall–the defeat was devastating. But for Roglič–who has won three Tours of Spain but lost the Tour de France in similar fashion back in 2020–the win affirmed the 33-year-old’s status as one of the greatest stage racers of the last decade. He’s won four grand tours, finished on the podium twice, and won 16 stages. And after starting the sport later in his athletic career (he was a world class ski jumper before becoming a cyclist), he likely has another year or two to add more wins to his grand tour resume–starting with trying for a fourth Tour of Spain later this summer.

But Roglič wasn’t the Giro’s only winner. Here’s a look at who else left Rome feeling good about their performance.

Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers)

Yes, Thomas lost the race in dramatic fashion on the Giro’s penultimate day, but as he said himself in a tweet following the stage, he would have happily accepted this result a few months ago. The 2018 Tour de France champion, Thomas has now finished on the podium in two grand tours in the last year (he took third at last summer’s Tour de France), and at a time when the world’s best riders are getting younger, to see a 37-year-old riding so well so late in his career is a true anomaly. Thomas is now the second-best grand tour rider in British history: behind Chris Froome–who won seven grand tours and stood on the podium in four more–but ahead of Bradley Wiggins–who won the 2012 Tour de France but never came close to the podium in any other 3-week stage race. Now Thomas gets a well-deserved rest before heading to the Tour of Spain in August to try and complete a hat trick of grand tour podium finishes.

106th giro d'italia 2023 stage 19

João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates)

Almeida’s grand tour progression continued this year, with the 24-year-old’s first podium finish, a mountain stage victory (atop Monte Bondone on Stage 16), and the maglia bianca (“white jersey”) as the Giro’s Best Young Rider. Fourth in 2020 and sixth in 2021, Almedia has steadily improved with each Giro participation, making him a true contender for the maglia rosa in 2024. We were most impressed with Almedia’s tenacity. We wondered after the second week if he would settle for third, racing cautiously so as not to lose a chance at his best-ever result. But he raced to win, blowing the Giro apart on his way to winning Stage 16 and sending a message to Thomas and Roglič that he wasn’t going down without a fight. Yes, he lost time the next day and ultimately “settled” for third, but he did so in a manner that indicates a grand tour victory is certainly within his future.

Jonathan Milan (Bahrain-Victorious)

Italy’s Jonathan Milan (Bahrain-Victorious) won the maglia ciclamino (“cyclamen jersey”) as the winner of the Giro’s Points Classification. The 22-year-old sprinted to victory on Stage 2 in San Salvo to take the jersey and then held tough throughout the rest of the race, finishing second four times and never letting go of his lead. It’s been a long time since Italian fans have had a pure field sprinter to root for, and in Milan they might have something special. His victory in the competition capped another successful Giro for Bahrain-Victorious, who also went home with a mountain stage victory for Colombia’s Santiago Buitrago (Stage 19) and a fourth-place overall finish for Italy’s Damiano Caruso.

106th giro d'italia 2023 stage 7

Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ)

Granted, France’s Thibaut Pinot made more headlines for his breakaway antics–and his Twitter spat with EF Education-EasyPost’ General Manager, Jonathan Vaughters–but the 33-year-old ended his final Giro d’Italia (he’s retiring at the end of the season) in fifth-place overall and wearing the maglia azzurra (“blue jersey”) as the winner of the Giro’s King of the Mountains Classification. We suspect that Pinot would have traded one of those results for a stage victory, but his aggressive tactics and his return to form bode well for this summer’s Tour de France, where all eyes will be on the Frenchman as he attempts to end his Tour de France career on a high note.

Derek Gee (Israel-PremierTech)

There was not a more exciting rider than Canada’s Derek Gee in this year’s Giro. The press and fans certainly didn’t think so, as the 25-year-old was named the Giro’s Most Aggressive Rider, which makes perfect sense considering that the man from Ottawa–riding in his first grand tour–animated the race from start to finish. He spent more than 1,000km on the attack, finished second four times, fourth twice, and was the runner-up in the Giro’s Points and King of the Mountains competitions. We’re dying to see Gee tackle the Tour de France this summer, and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that the team selects him to start the race.

Mark Cavendish (Astana)

For much of the Giro, Great Britain’s Mark Cavendish (Astana) looked a step behind the competition, a fact that didn’t bode well for his chances of breaking the record for the most stage wins in Tour de France history this July (he’s currently tied with Eddy Merckx at 34).

But the Manx Missile began the Giro’s final week with a press conference on the second Rest Day in which he announced he was retiring at the end of the season, making this the last Giro of his career. Well, maybe the weight of his pending announcement was weighing him down during the first two weeks, because Cavendish survived the Giro’s mountainous final week, holding on for one more chance to end his Giro career with a stage victory. Well, the moment came at the end of Stage 21, when Cavendish–helped in no small part by Thomas himself–sprinted to the 17th and final Giro stage victory of his career.

Now Cavendish heads to the Tour confident in his form–which is crucial for a rider like Cavendish–and perhaps buoyed in the knowledge that even his competitors seem to be rooting for him. If the 38-year-old (he celebrated his birthday during the Giro) enters the final stage winless, will he receive similar support from his “friends” on the Champs-Élysées? We can’t wait to see!

106th giro d'italia 2023 stage 20

Jumbo-Visma switched from riding Shimano to SRAM groupsets this past off-season, a huge move considering the Dutch squad has been supported by Shimano for decades–and won last year’s Tour de France (and three Tours of Spain) on the Japanese company’s components. So you can imagine how SRAM’s product managers and marketing team must have felt as they watched Roglič–just as we learned he was gaining time on Thomas–drop his chain on the steep climb up Monte Lussari at the end of Stage 20.

Luckily, Roglič quickly put the chain back onto his single chainring and–with a little help from a friend –went on to win the stage and the Giro, giving SRAM it’s first grand tour victory since 2014. And with Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard looking like he’s on track to defend his Tour de France title in July, the company could go 2-for-2.

The Giro’s Organizers

After two weeks of bad weather, crashes, and riders testing positive for COVID-19 (including Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel , who won two stages and led the race heading into the first Rest Day), things weren’t looking good, the RCS Group the company who organizes the Giro d’Italia and several of the sport’s other major events. To make matters worse, Thomas and Roglič turned the Giro into more of a game of chess than a boxing match, trading seconds with one another via a series of calculated moves as opposed to launching huge attacks to try and blow the race apart.

But the third week brought better weather and lots (and lots) of mountains (which is partly to blame for the initial stalemate at the top of the General Classification), and the result was absolutely stunning. But the Giro’s best and most dramatic stage was saved for its penultimate day: a 18.6K time trial that started out flat, but ended with a super-steep climb to the Sanctuary atop Monte Lussari. The stage had it all: forced bike changes, motorcycle support vehicles, gondola rides back down the mountain, but most importantly, a dramatic outcome. The result completely overshadowed the rain-soaked, crash-riddled, Covid-impacted first two weeks of the race, leaving us all with memories of the Giro as it should be: incredibly beautiful, insanely challenging, and breath-takingly epic.

Since getting hooked on pro cycling while watching Lance Armstrong win the 1993 U.S. Pro Championship in Philadelphia, longtime Bicycling contributor Whit Yost has raced on Belgian cobbles, helped build a European pro team, and piloted that team from Malaysia to Mont Ventoux as an assistant director sportif. These days, he lives with his wife and son in Pennsylvania, spending his days serving as an assistant middle school principal and his nights playing Dungeons & Dragons.

Giro d'Italia 2023: Watch explosive finale to Stage 5 as Remco Evenepoel crashes (again) and Mark Cavendish hits deck

A hellish day at the Giro d’Italia saw Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) crash twice – once after a dog ran into the peloton – and Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan) slide on his torso across the finish line behind Stage 5 winner Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck).

Giro d'Italia 2023: Preview, stages, schedule and how to watch

Who are the top riders to watch out for at the 2023 Giro? What are the key stages during the three-week race? How to watch the 2023 Giro d'Italia road cycling stage race? Discover all you need to know.

Giro d'Italia trophy

The first Grand Tour of the 2023 men's road cycling season is almost upon us.

On Saturday 6 May, 176 riders representing 22 teams will set out from Fossacesia Marina on Italy's Adriatic Sea coast to begin the 106th Giro d'Italia (Tour of Italy) .

Among them will be INEOS Grenadiers' Tao Geoghegan Hart  who clinched the Maglia Rosa in 2020 and is set to be the only previous champion taking part.

Last year's winner Jai Hindley and 2021 hero Egan Bernal - who is back in the saddle after suffering serious injuries in a training crash - are both focusing on the Tour de France.

This year's race – some 3489.2 kilometres ( 2168.1 miles) long – will start and end in its home country Italy, with just a short detour through the Swiss canton of Valais to end Stage 13 and begin Stage 14. The race will see a total of 51,400 metres (168,600 ft) of altitude gain .

For the first time since the 2018 race, the 21st and final stage of the Giro will be a flat procession (more commonly seen in the Tour de France and Vuelta a España), instead of the individual time trial used to end the race in five of the last six editions.

Giro d'Italia 2023 riders to watch

There are 22 teams involved – 18 UCI WorldTour teams, the UCI ProTeam Israel-Premier Tech, and three Italian wildcards – in this year's race.

While Geoghegan Hart is the only previous winner lining up, he is unlikely to be the headline act this year. Not with riders like reigning world champion Remco Evenepoel , three-time Vuelta winner Primoz Roglic , and Geoghegan Hart's own Tour de France-winning teammate Geraint Thomas all also in the peloton.

Evenepoel enters the Giro as one of the form men, having enjoyed a famous win in the rainbow stripes at the Liège–Bastogne–Liège monument late last month, in addition to finishing first and second in the general classification at the UAE Tour and Volta a Catalunya respectively already this season.

Roglic, meanwhile, had a successful March, having won the Catalunya general classification the week after achieving that same feat at Tirreno–Adriatico. This is just his third participation in a Giro, but has good memories of the race, having finished third in 2019.

Other previous Giro podium finishers in this year's race include Colombian veteran Rigoberto Urán , second in 2013 and 2014, as well as the 2021 runner-up Damiano Caruso .

However, the race will be without potential challenger Giulio Ciccone (Trek-Segafredo), who has withdrawn after testing positive for Covid. France's Warren Barguil (Arkéa-Samsic) is also a doubt after contracting Covid.

As this year's course is not particularly sprinter-friendly, with only three truly flat road stages, it seems likely that the cyclamen (mauve) jersey for top points scorer will go to a sprinter who can hold their own on the climbs – perhaps someone like 2019 world champion Mads Pedersen .

Tao Geoghegan Hart won the Giro d'Italia in 2020.

Giro d'Italia 2023 route, stages, and schedule

There are three individual time trials on the 2023 Giro d'Italia route, including a mountainous time trial on Stage 20 up to Monte Lussari , which includes eye-watering gradients of up to 22 per cent .

Six stages – Stages 7 (Gran Sasso), 13 (Crans-Montana), 16 (Bondone), 18 (Val di Zoldo), 19 (Tre Cime di Lavaredo), and 20 (Lussari) – will all finish at the top of climbs, with another – Stage 4 (Laceno) – finishing on a short plateau after a mountainous climb.

The race's Cima Coppi – the highest climb – comes on Stage 13's excursion to Switzerland, with the 2470m-high (8100ft) Col du Grand-Saint-Bernard on the Italian–Swiss border taking the honour.

Race report A huge breakaway takes shape after 15 kilometres. Bauke Mollema, Ilan Van Wilder, Mads Pedersen, Davide Formolo, Alberto Bettiol, Andrea Pasqualon, Toms Skujins, Marco Frigo, Patrick Konrad, Laurens Huys, Einer Rubio, Michael Matthews, Sepp Kuss, Michel Heßmann, Sebastian Berwick, Nico Denz, Christian Scaroni, Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier, Samuele Battistella, Alex Baudin, Alessandro Iacchi, Veljko Stojnic, Jasha Sütterlin, Vadim Pronskiy, Alessandro Tonelli, Jonathan Lastra and Valentin Paret-Peintre are on board.

Their lead exceeds 1.30 minutes when Stefano Oldani and Davide Gaburro start chasing. Lorenzo Fortunato and Luca Covili also want to join the breakaway. The four regain contact after 50 kilometres of action.

Denz, Skujins, Battistella, Berwick and Tonelli open up a gap with 90 kilometres remaining. Battistella loses contact and the other four put over 3 minutes into their former companions. A chase does not take off until Scaroni, Baudin and Bettiol join forces just before the first passage on the line.

The three gradually close the gap to 2.15 minutes, but then Skujins ups the pace at the front. Which causes Tonelli to lose contact. The other three reach the summit of the Colle Braida 3 minutes ahead of the first chasers.

Denz accelerates with 12 kilometres to go. Skujins shuts down the gap straight away, Berwick 3 kilometres later.

Denz is the strongest sprinter of the three and the German takes the win. The GC riders cross the line more than 8 minutes later. Thomas stays in pink.

2023 Giro d’Italia: Stage 18 Results

Ron

  • May 25, 2023 May 25, 2023

Filipo Zana of the Jayco-Alula team survived the break to win atop Val di Zoldo ahead of Thibaut Pinot in Stage 18 of the 2023 Giro d’Italia.

Stage 18 was classified as a high mountain stage, with five classified climbs and an uphill finish with ramps up to 19% in the final kilometers. The route climbs the Passo della Crosetta (11 km, 7% gradient), reaching the Cansiglio, and then descends or undulates, twisting continuously, through the Piave valley, all the way to Pieve di Cadore. The race enters the Boite valley and climbs the Forcella Cibiana (9.6 km, 8% gradient), then enters the Val di Zoldo for the closing ascent.

tour de italy 2023 winner

The last 15 km in the Val di Zoldo feature two categorised climbs. Coi, the first one, has uphill gradients of nearly 20%; the roadway is narrowed at points, but well paved. The finish is 5 km from the summit. A short descent leads into the final 3 km, with gradients hovering around 6%. Eight consecutive switchbacks lead into the home straight (300 m long and 7 m wide).

As we tuned into live coverage, a lead group composed of Aurelien Paret-Peintre (ACT), Vadim Pronskiy (AST), Thibaut Pinot (GFC), Marco Frigo (IPT), Derek Gee (IPT), Warren Barguil (ARK), and Filippo Zana (JAY) were out front.

With 50km remaining, the leaders had opened more than a 5 minute gap over the maglia rosa group. Two sprints and three climbs remained.

2023 Giro d'Italia

The lead held with a fractured group of leaders still holding over a four minute lead with less than 8km to go. Back in the peloton, Sep Kuss and Primoz Roglic were attacking the maglia rosa group, but Geraint Thomas was not letting them go.

5km to go and Pinot, Zana and Gee were the only riders of the original seven still out front with a lead of just over 3 minutes over the peloton, but mere seconds to the maglia rosa group of Thomas, Kuss, and Roglic.

On the final climb, it came down to a two man sprint between Pinot and Zana. Pinot was still looking for a final win here before he retires, but it was Zana who had the legs to take the win.

Speaking seconds after the finish, the stage winner Filippo Zana said: “I still can’t believe it. I have to thank the team because they gave me this opportunity. I arrived at the Giro at 100%. I played my cards right in the final, it was an opportunity of those that come around a few times in life and I took it. To win wearing the Tricolore is something special.”

The Maglia Rosa Geraint Thomas said: “It’s a pleasant day. I take time on Almeida and didn’t get dropped by Primoz. I felt pretty good, always under control but Primoz obviously went hard. It wasn’t easy. It’s nice to have doubled the advantage over Almeida but Primoz had a bad day the other day, Almeida today, I just want to be consistent till the end.”

The Giro , which spans three weeks and includes 21 separate stage races and two days of rest, showcases the top riders in the world competing for the highly coveted pink winner's shirt, and today, we are taking an early look at the prestigious event and the competition's favourites.

Giro d'Italia 2024 Event Information

- Start Location: Turin, Italy

- End Location: Rome, Italy

- Distance: 3,321 kilometres

- Date: May 4 – 26, 2024

- 2023 Winner: Primoz Roglic

Giro d'Italia 2023 Re-Cap

Last year, the Giro stayed in Italy for the Grande Partenza, and the first individual time trial took place at Fossacesia. In the past, the Giro, like the other two Grand Tours, has begun in nations such as Belgium and Hungary. For the second year in a row, the 2024 race will begin in Turin, Italy's Venaria Reale, and end in the same city, 136 km later, in Torino.

After Geraint Thomas of Ineos Grenadiers lost the pink jersey on the last stage—an individual mountain time trial that concluded atop Monte Lussari—Primoz Roglic of Jumbo-Visma won the 2023 edition. His return to defend his championship in 2024 is still up in the air.

Giro d'Italia History

The Giro d'Italia will celebrate its 107th edition this year, after its inception in 1909. Originally established by a regional newspaper named La Gazzetta dello Sport, the organisation is now managed by RCS Sport, a subsidiary of RCS Mediagroup, which also owns the newspaper. Renowned for its formidable reputation, this race is considered one of the most challenging in the world. Its rugged, diverse, and breathtaking courses set it apart from other prestigious Grand Tours.

The Giro's recognition is such that both overall triumphs and stage wins frequently serve as pivotal events in a rider's career. Throughout its existence, the Giro has seen a mere 22 riders emerge as multiple winners of the race, and achieving consecutive victories in the Giro is a rare feat.

Giro d'Italia 2024 Betting Favourites

Primoz Roglic, representing Jumbo-Visma, triumphed as the overall champion of the 2023 Giro d'Italia. Nevertheless, he will unlikely retain his title since he will devote his attention to the Tour de France.

With a recently revamped and well-proportioned 2024 course, RCS Sport has enticed several prominent figures and top competitors, including Tadej Pogacar.

Pogacar has won the Tour de France twice and secured second place on two occasions. He has also had a podium finish in the Vuelta a Espana. Although he has not yet competed in the Giro d'Italia, he will debut in May 2024, with boosted odds from many popular online sports betting sites .

Pogacar expressed his primary objectives for 2024 as reclaiming the Tour de France championship, pursuing a gold medal at the Paris Olympic Games, and competing in the UCI World Championships. Since Marco Pantini's victory in both races 1998, no cyclist has accomplished the Giro-Tour de France double. Despite the demanding schedule necessary to do this, there is a widespread belief in his capability to do it.

Unsurprisingly, Pogacar is the Giro d'Italia frontrunner by a landslide.

The Giro d'Italia 2024 Route

The 2024 edition of La Corsa Rosa will be the briefest since 1979, as the organisers seem to encourage aggressive racing by designing stages that average roughly 175km to 200km over three weeks. Several stages begin with uphill starts, creating favourable conditions for a breakaway to establish itself. Additionally, mountain stages are strategically placed throughout the race, promising an intriguing competition for the general classification.

In the 2024 Giro d'Italia, the peloton will face six summit finishes in demanding stages in the Dolomites, Alps, and Apennines. The race will reach its climax with the final double climb and descent of the Monte Grappa.

Stage 16 of the route has the Cima Coppi, which is the Stelvio Pass located at an elevation of 2,758 metres. The pass is situated in the middle of the stage.

2024 RBC Heritage purse, prize money: Payout for Scottie Scheffler, golfers from $20M signature event pool

Another signature event means another big winner's check was up for grabs in south carolina.

rbc-heritage-trophy-2023-g.png

Another week, another monstrous purse on the PGA Tour (taken home by Scottie Scheffler). The first signature event to be played following the 2024 Masters took place in Hilton Head, South Carolina, with the RBC Heritage hosting the best golfers on Tour -- and the best golfer in the world came out on top once again

With $20 million on the line in totality, Scottie Scheffler won for the fourth time in his last five starts , cashing a cool $3.6 million winner's share.

There was not a cut in place this week, so everyone in the field was guaranteed at least $41,000 no matter how many crooked numbers they posted. This is the new way of life for Tour pros as this is one of eight big-money signature events, only three of which have a cut.

Your first four winners from signature events this season ...

  • The Sentry: Chris Kirk ($3.6 million)
  • Pebble Beach Pro Am: Wyndham Clark ($3.6 million)
  • Genesis Invitational: Hideki Matsuyama ($4 million)
  • Arnold Palmer Invitational: Scottie Scheffler ($4 million)
  • RBC Heritage: Scottie Scheffler ($3.6 million)

Scheffler has now won $16.25 million over his last five starts, including $3.6 million for taking the 2024 Masters, $4.5 million for winning The Players Championship and $554,000 for finishing second at the Houston Open.

The Wells Fargo Championship, Memorial and Travelers Championship will round out the eight signature events for 2024. Only the Memorial will have a cut. Add it all up, and there is nearly $200 million at stake between those eight tournaments plus The Players Championship, which Scheffler won in early March.

Let's take a look at the payout list for the 2024 RBC Heritage for the 69 players who are playing this event.

Luis Miguel celebrates 54th birthday in L.A. with Paloma Cuevas and daughter Michelle Salas

The famous singer known popularly as ‘sol de méxico’ is on a world tour that is taking him across south america, the us, spain and mexico.

Luis Miguel y Paloma Cuevas

The romantic relationship between the Spanish designer Paloma Cuevas, 52, and the Mexican singer Luis Miguel, 54, is going strong. Despite the initial surprise, and even disbelief, that the romance first generated, the couple seems to be consolidating a bond that has been growing step by step for almost two years. Last week they demonstrated it once again, albeit with their usual discretion, by celebrating the singer’s birthday together. Cuevas traveled over 6,000 miles from Spain to the city of Los Angeles to be with the artist on his special day. His daughter, Michelle Salas, has also shared a photograph of herself with Luis Miguel on that day, a rare event as the two have not posed publicly together for years.

Luis Miguel is currently on a very successful world tour, with each and every concert sold out. After passing through South America and around 20 U.S. cities since the end of 2023, he has extended the American leg of the tour. Last week in L.A. he surpassed the 100-concert mark with two events at the Crypto.com Arena on April 16 and 17, when he showed himself to be in shape, with a lot of energy and a well cared-for voice. His following concert was two days later, on April 19, in Las Vegas, the same day he turned 54. But he took advantage of that short break in Los Angeles to go out to dinner with Cuevas and blow out his birthday candles. According to Hola! magazine , which revealed the information on Wednesday, mariachis came to the restaurant where they sang the traditional Mañanitas to the winner of 12 Grammy Awards.

The artist also celebrated his special day with his eldest daughter, Michelle Salas, 34, born from his relationship with the Mexican actress Stephanie Salas. It was not until the young woman turned 18 that Luis Miguel recognized his paternity (which at one point he even denied), but for a few years now they have maintained an affectionate relationship. Luis Miguel attended the wedding of the young woman — a model and influencer — held in Italy last October, and gave away the bride at the altar. Although Salas and her husband, the Venezuelan businessman Danilo Díaz, shared every detail of the marriage in Vogue magazine, there were no photographs of Luis Miguel. Now, however, Salas has congratulated her father on his birthday with an image of both of them together, in what constitutes a very unusual gesture.

The image was taken, apparently, on a private plane. Both are dressed in black, and she is sitting on her father’s lap and rests her head on him, while both hold glasses of red wine. Salas posted it on her Instagram profile, which has more than two million followers, on April 23, a few days after the singer’s birthday. Although there is no text and it is not dated, both were in Los Angeles and Las Vegas during practically the same days. The influencer traveled to both cities for different promotional events for the brands with which she collaborates, and has shared her luxurious lifestyle on her social media accounts, showing off signature bags and staying in expensive hotels.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by ᴍɪᴄʜᴇʟʟᴇ sᴀʟᴀs 🧿 (@michellesalasb)

It does not look like the celebrations with Cuevas and Salas coincided; if this was the case, both women have given the spotlight to one another in order to each have their media moment with the so-called Sol de México (Sun of Mexico). Cuevas and Luis Miguel have been friends for years, as she is the daughter of Victoriano Valencia, an important bullfighting impresario who is himself a friend of Luisito Rey, the singer’s father. Later, during her marriage of almost 25 years to the bullfighter Enrique Ponce, the artist was a friend and regular guest of the couple; in fact, both were the godparents of Miguel, the first of the two children that the Mexican superstar had with the actress Aracely Arámbula. It was after Cuevas and Ponce’s divorce, in the summer of 2020, that the artist became closer to her and their friendship became a romantic relationship.

During the months of May and June, Luis Miguel will continue on his tour of the United States, where he will give 30 more concerts. At the end of June he will fly to Spain, where he will start his tour in Córdoba (the hometown of Paloma Cuevas) and do 15 concerts until the beginning of August. Then he will take a break for a couple of weeks before finishing the tour with another 30 shows throughout Mexico.
