A Message From Nate, Jack and Andrew

hi guys! A lot of you have been asking us for an update on when to expect new music from fun. As you know, we like to give you guys news and updates when they are ready, but there has been a lot of recent chatter and we hear you and wanted to speak to you directly to explain a few things.so here goes- first and foremost to answer the question that has been raised most often: fun is not breaking up. fun was founded by the 3 of us at a time when we were coming out of our own bands. one thing that has always been so special about fun is that we exist as 3 individuals in music who come together to do something collaborative. we make fun records when we are super inspired to do so. currently nate is working on his first solo album, andrew is scoring films and jack is on tour and working on bleachers music. the 3 of us have always followed inspiration wherever it leads us. sometimes that inspiration leads to fun music, sometimes it leads to musical endeavors outside of fun. we see all of it as part of the ecosystem that makes fun, fun. you guys are EVERYTHING to us. honestly. We want to treat YOU GUYS (our amazing fan base) with the respect you deserve; and that is by making music when we are fully ready to make it and never giving you guys anything that is less than 100%. “Some Nights” was a successful album and it would have been very easy for us to jump back in the studio and capitalize on our momentum. but making records and touring when its “good for business” means nothing to us. we make records and tour when we are inspired to do so. that is the very reason why we have built such a special connection with all of you. that is how we can be the most honest to the people who support our music. It’s also important for you guys to know that the 3 of us are very involved and supportive of all these different projects going on within the fun family at the moment. that fact that our tiny club can produce so many different kinds of music together and as individuals is very special to us. as always, we’ll keep you guys updated! all our love nate, jack and andrew

Traveling with kids can sometimes make you insecure about your ability to manage grand-scale trips, whether you are a fearless adventurer who once backpacked across Europe during your college years or your travels are relegated to a few transcontinental business trips a year. Even the best of us can be intimidated by the logistics of bringing young kids and/or unimpressed teens on what is meant to be an adventure of a lifetime.

Just how does one manage to find all modes of transport between multiple destinations; the right attractions and activities to appease every family member, regardless of age; and hotels and restaurants that are kid-friendly -- on top of all the other pieces we need to put into place?

Adventures by Disney family group tours

Enter tour groups. Before you grumble that these are meant for an older set and are guaranteed to include more bus rides than activity time, we're here to inform you that family tour operators have really gotten it right with a great array of travel options, services and family fun.

To date, a Danube River cruise with Adventures by Disney is one of my family's favorite trips. The kids adored the Adventure Guides, who felt like part of the family before the cruise ended, and they met other children their age to play with during the nonactive periods along the river. Outings were included and set up by age groups. We had choices of what we wanted to do, and with multigenerational trips including kids as young as 6 up to grandparents, this 10-day adventure through various countries was enjoyable and, actually, a piece of cake. Disney did all of the heavy lifting!

Can I Use Miles to Pay for a Group Tour?

While tour companies aren't as connected to the miles world as hotel chains and airlines, there are ways to both earn and use miles to pay for a group tour. To apply points to a group tour, you'll want to dip into fixed-value miles from programs that allow you to "erase" a travel purchase from your credit card statement: Think Capital One miles that you earn with the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card, or Barclaycard Arrival miles that you earn with the Barclaycard Arrival Plus World Elite Mastercard.

In the case of Capital One, you can "wipe out" any travel-coded purchase that's hit your statement in the past 90 days. Redeem your miles at a fixed rate: 1 mile equals 1 penny. You can redeem for a partial credit but need to redeem at least 2,500 miles.

tour group fun

Barclaycard Arrival miles work in a similar fashion with 1 mile equaling 1 penny in redemption. You can erase any travel-coded purchase you've made in the last 120 days. The downside in this case is that you need to have all of the miles in your account to erase the entire charge; Barclaycard doesn't offer partial redemptions. But you will get 5% of your redeemed miles refunded, so that's a nice bonus after the fact.

If you don't have fixed-value miles to help reduce the cost of your group tour, make sure to use a credit card that rewards for travel purchases when you book. The Chase Sapphire Reserve, for example, offers 3x the points for every dollar you spend on travel (excluding $300 travel credit). Considering tours can be a bit pricey (you are paying for convenience, after all), you could easily earn enough points for a cheaper future getaway.

Family-Friendly Group Tour Companies

Looking for tour operators that cater to families? Here's a look at the companies TPG has its eye on. All tour prices are per person without airfare.

Adventures by Disney river cruise

Thomson Family Adventures

Since 1998, the Thomson family has offered small-group tours geared toward families like them who want to travel deeper by connecting to a country and its culture. Tours include a "Rafiki," or a friend, who will break the ice with the group and help keep things entertaining for the kids, while local expert guides show you around at a pace comfortable for everyone.

Thomson creates family itineraries that will take your brood back to ancient civilizations for tours that are not only family-friendly and fun but also educational. (Shh, the kids won't know they are learning on this vacation!) Trips are organized by activity level, so parents can select those best-suited to their children's needs. Multigenerational trips scheduled for 2019 can whisk your family off to exotic destinations like China, Egypt and Tanzania, as well as swings through the Caribbean and Europe.

Not only does your child get to explore faraway lands but he or she will also get to cultivate new friendships. Through the company's Friends Across Borders program, kids are paired with a child of similar age in the country you will be visiting so they can write to each other before and after the trip, and meet up at some point during your tour to potentially kick off a lifetime of friendship. We don't know of any other tour group that provides this.

Best Ages: 6 and up

Sample Starting Price: Thomson's popular seven-day Costa Rica Multi-Sport Adventure starts at $3,130 per person as of press time. On this trek, your clan will visit a sea turtle conservancy, learn to make chocolate and leave no stone unturned in Tortuguero National Park.

REI Adventures

The outdoor-lovers' go-to shop began uniting its customers with adventure tours more than 30 years ago, with many accommodations of the canvas tent or ecolodge variety. REI Adventures features 150 different trips across every continent (although the family junkets won't get you to Antarctica).

Family forays can be all-out exotic with rambles to Thailand and Machu Picchu , or within the national parks of the US, such as the Great Smoky Mountains or Zion and Bryce Canyon national park tours that will have the entire family enjoying the great outdoors. (Here are some tips for visiting national parks with kids.) You'll find three- and seven-day weekend getaway options, as well as seven- to 15-day adventures. REI has been committed to the environment since its founding in 1938. Every trek organized by the company practices green initiatives: using recyclable and reusable materials, minimizing environmental impact and following high ethical standards. The company also works in conjunction with host countries by offering meaningful cultural exchanges and patronizing local businesses.

Best Ages: Due to the tours' physical activities, REI Adventures is best-suited for active teens who can keep up with the hiking, kayaking, river rafting and biking that are often at the forefront of the tours.

Sample Starting Price: A three-day hiking weekend is $1,599 per person (with REI member discounts bringing the price down to $1,449), while a 10-day Thailand trip starts at $3,309 ($2,999 for members).

Points Perks: REI loyalty begins with $20 for a lifetime membership. As a member, you'll get discounted tours, as well as discounted classes, events, services and merchandise at REI locations around the world. Sign up for the REI Co-op World Mastercard and you'll get an additional 5% back on purchases at REI, as well as 1% back on everyday purchases with no annual fee. Plus, every purchase means a donation to the National Forest Foundation.

Intrepid Travel

By pairing three to five families with like-minded individuals, especially matching children of similar interests and ages, Intrepid Travel works to create lasting friendships along with its tours. Keeping the groups to no more than 10 people means more focus on you, and kids 17 and younger receive 10% off trip prices.

Family voyages are uber-exotic with Intrepid. You can explore the desert landscape of Morocco, the African valleys of Kenya and the opulent palaces of India. Any one of the action-packed journeys will combine activities that coincide with your child's school curriculum or hobbies.

Intrepid doesn't just show you the world, it gives back as well. Through the nonprofit Intrepid Foundation, funds have been distributed to support local and grassroots projects, including sustainable development, environmental conservation and wildlife protection.

Best Ages: Age minimums vary but start at 5 and up, depending on the location. Most children on these trips fall between 8 and 18 years of age.

Sample Starting Price: Imagine Morocco with the kiddos for eight days starting as low as $675 per person, not including airfare. Cross wind-swept dunes, ride a camel in the desert and get lost in the alleyways of bustling markets. (Single parents will love Intrepid, as well, because of its solo parent options with other solo moms and dads.)

Points Perks: Intrepid has its own loyalty program: After nine trips, you'll earn $1,800 toward a 10th tour when you become an Intrepid Legend.

Adventures By Disney

If you think creating "The Happiest Place on Earth" is all Disney can do, you haven't tried Adventures by Disney, the high-end, "we take care of everything" family travel company. You'll pay a pretty penny to join these tours, offered since 2005, but your entire family is guaranteed to have a blast with tours that include Disney-trained local guides who stay with you for the entire journey.

Immersing your family into the cultures you visit, ABD (as it is known by its fans) offers more than 30 adventures across six continents. Go deep into China with a visit to the Forbidden City, Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong, or traverse across Australia, from the Great Barrier Reef to Ayers Rock to the Gold Coast to Sydney. (Here are the best ways to use points and miles to fly from the US to Australia .) Disney goes big when it creates its cruising adventures and has partnered with AMAWaterways for ABD cruises throughout Europe. Trips range from three-day weekends to two-week adventures.

With backstage, one-of-a-kind tours, you'll skip lines and do things you wouldn't do on other tours like visit the Good Morning America studios in New York City or take an after-hours tour of the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel in Rome. From the moment you step off the plane, you'll have Adventure Guides with you so you feel like a VIP from start to finish.

Adventures by Disney

Best Ages: Minimum ages start at 4 or 6 years of age, depending on the destination.

Sample Starting Price: Disney's tours are so great that its pricing falls under the "if you have to ask" category. They are expensive. A 12-day/11-night tour of China starts at $8,949 per person while a four-day/three-night tour of New York City starts at $2,929 per person.

Points Perks: The Chase Disney Visa returns 1–2% back in the form of Disney dollars, which can be used on Adventures by Disney tours. Or, put your ABD vacay on your Disney card, and use your rewards for a future Disney outing.

Lindblad Expeditions

Launched in Sweden by the explorer Lars-Eric Lindblad, the Lindblad family combines a National Geographic partnership with highly engaging expeditions that kids not only learn from but also will enjoy. With this program, certified field educators serve as tour directors and guides, helping your children connect with nature

Family and multigenerational expeditions make it easy for ages 8 to 80 to enjoy explorative travel together, all aboard adventurous small ship cruises that allow you to get up close to the wildlife of the Galapagos, Alaska, the Amazon River basin and even Antarctica. Kids under 18 get $500 off, and specials often include free airfare for everyone and bar tabs for parents. (Yes, it's a family affair, but it doesn't deprive parents on the journey.)

Sample Starting Price: Spend 10 days touring the Galapagos starting at $7,290. 2019 is the 50th year Lindblad has been conducting expedition cruises to the land of Darwin, where kids will encounter giant tortoises and sea lions.

Bottom Line

Let someone else do all of the planning and work so you can truly enjoy a vacation by taking a group tour that was specifically designed for families. The best way to lessen the cost of a big trip like this is by using your miles to get your family to the tour's embarkation point, and then focus on fixed-value points that can help "erase" all or part of the tour cost.

3 Day Southwest USA National Parks Tour from Las Vegas

I don't like long rides, but the bus was comfortable and arrived right on time. The rides between stops were one or two hours, and the time moved along nicely, as the tour guide, named Indy, had us all fully engaged with stories and histories of where we were going. He was very knowledgeable, and the rides were a lot of fun. Everything, including the hotels and meals, went off without a single hiccup. Indy persuaded me to take the helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon, which I hadn't planned to take, but he was right, and I'm glad I took it. He engaged us in such a way that when we all went to our respective rooms for the nights, everyone came together for dinner, rather than going off as couples or singles. Then, while touring the canyons and trails, everyone chose to stay together, like a big family. This added to the experience in a positive way, and I can see how the tour guide made this all happen. He really solidified his group, and we all became good friends. After the tour ended with a trip back to the Mirage in Las Vegas, we all got together on our own, for dinner and drinks at The Venetian, where the wine was excellent, as wine often is when consumed with good friends. It was a memorable evening after a memorable three-day trip. Everyone has kept in touch, exchanging photos and Instagrams and stuff. We were dubious about finding a tour group and guide that were reputable, and we feel lucky to have found Bindlestiff and Indy. We have already decided to take another trip next year with the same organization. This tour met all our expectations, and really surpassed them, and I highly recommend Bindlestiff.

This was the VERY BEST WAY to see the stunning National Parks of Southern Utah. You don't miss a thing due to needing "eyes on the road" as when you drive yourself, you have a knowledgeable (and SO pleasant) guide to take you to and tell you the significance of all you are seeing, and having all the many arrangements made for you is priceless. This was absolutely a seamless experience from start to finish.

The tour destinations were fabulous, made interesting and enjoyable by Nick’s superb knowledge and care. The van could have a much better system of temperature control, especially as there are no blinds or windows which would open. Fortunately we were only nine, if it was full capacity it would have been uncomfortable. The accommodations were comfortable, clean and adequate.

Tim was a great tour guide. He was knowledgeable, helpful, and always upbeat. Time with the wildlife expert was phenomenal. the tour itself was excellent. The good ranking has to do with communications from Intrepid Travel, which were poor and lead to changed air flights and other headaches.

Hike Alaska: Glaciers and Denali

Had a wonderful time in Alaska. A combination of the sights and sounds and what we saw as well as the CEO and other participants made it a great experience. A well balanced program with options to please all interests, it was a good time for all of us. Can't control the weather though, which would have made it a five star vacation. Would do it again in a heartbeat.

Alaska Kenai Adventure 9 Days Tour

Alaska Kenai Adventure 9 Days

A magical, life-changing trip. I'd wanted to visit Alaska for as long as I can remember, and I'm so glad I got to experience it for the first time with Infinite Adventures! From seeing orcas to hiking alongside glaciers, and telling stories around the campfire while the sun still shines at 11pm, this was an adventure I'll never forget. And I can't wait to go back! Dave and Carolina were the perfect guides. Fun, passionate, kind, highly knowledgable and skilled at spotting wildlife, attuned to everyone's needs, and just the right amount of "tough love" (from Dave, anyway!) to push you outside your comfort zone. From day one, they made me feel right at home and built camaraderie among our group so that we all felt like lifelong friends by the end. (Natalie wasn't on our trip but I spoke to her a lot via email and she was also fantastic, very informative and prompt about answering all my questions.) Despite traveling on a literal tour bus with guides, my experience with Infinite Adventures didn't feel commercial or tourist-y. You're sleeping in a tent, pitching in with chores around the campsite, using the occasional pit toilet, and there's no slowing down even if it's cold or rainy! (Of course Dave and Carolina would change plans if the weather makes something unsafe, but "inconvenient" doesn't influence their itinerary.) There are group activities each day, but you'll also have plenty of opportunities to explore on your own and try local restaurants/cafes/bars in Seward, Homer, and Hope. One highlight is the Adventure Camp across the bay from Homer, a private "tent and breakfast" run by Dave's friends who cook delicious meals and provide a charming atmosphere to take a hot shower and relax after a long day kayaking. You'll probably see a ton of wildlife, too. We saw orcas (specifically transients, which are rarer than other types of orcas), humpbacks, sea otters, Stellar sea lions, seals, puffins, TONS of bald eagles, golden eagles, moose, marmots, black bears, and probably more I'm forgetting. Not to mention all the gorgeous trees and wildflowers everywhere. Alaska is simply breathtaking. And Infinite Adventures is for everyone! Our group ranged in age from 18 to mid-70s, all fitness levels, a mix of single folks like myself, couples, and a father and daughter, and about half our group were from overseas. As long as you're open to trying new things and don't mind getting a little dirty, you'll have an incredible time with Dave and Carolina. So if you've read all the way to the end of my review... what are you waiting for? Book this trip!

Alaska Adventure - 20 Days Tour

Alaska Adventure - 20 Days

Infinite Adventures is the very very best!!!! We typically do a long trip every year and this one was the best we have ever done. My wife and two kids absolutely loved it. Dave, Tory, Nat, and Ellie made it very easy to enjoy Alaska's great outdoors without us having to plan or find the best spots. They know all the little details that made it fun. Their sense of humor was also a huge plus. After a day hiking glaciers or bear watching the camp sight was always fun and dinners/food was always on point. Natalie and Ellie made best scrambled eggs ever. Tory and Dave made best Salmon dinner's (they deserve at least one Michelin star). The bus ride was also fun, comfortable with good conversation and great music (Nat, please more ABBA next time LOL). Also, the group travel angle was great fun as we got to meet and bond with people from all over the world. Really wonderful group of people. We will definitely be doing another trip in future with Infinite Adventures and highly recommend it to others.

Discover American Canyonlands National Geographic Journeys

Matthew (CEO) was great. As issues/challenges arose (which they inevitably do) Matthew addressed them, and provided options/alternatives, which he presented to the group and the group came to a consensus. A suggestion for Management/Tour Operator, The "meeting" with a Native American who was to talk about his/her Native American culture, should be given "guardrails" and stay within their "Lane". There are those who do not share the presenter's same political viewpoint as the presenter and the presenter should respect that his/her audience may have differing political viewpoint(s) and stay away from brining politics into their presentation. Again Matthew (CEO) was a great ambassador for the Tour Operator and we would definitely take another tour/trip with Matthew!

Alaska: Ocean Wildlife to Interior Wilderness Adventure - 9 Days

Time flies when you're having fun. Me and my daughter had an excellent time on this trip. 11 days seems like a long time but with so much to do, it flew by. We were able to see parts of Alaska that few get the opportunity to see. There were plenty of wildlife encounters including the Brown Bears, Moose, Eagles, Caribou, fox, lynx, whales, and swans. Adam and Daniel were accommodating to be sure we got the full experience of what we wanted to do. The hotels and cabins were perfectly fine with no problems. The excursion started with us being picked up at the Anchorage Airport, settling into the hotel and a nice dinner overlooking the ship river. the next morning a drive down the Seward highway, a bush plane flight to Lake Clark Ntl Park to the Great Bear Lodge (great view of the volcano Mt Iliamna). Excursions to the beach to watch the brown bears dig clams, there are plenty of bears to see. After the flight out, it was 2 nights in Seward, we opted for deep sea fishing and caught 2 halibut, 4 rockfish each as well as breaching whales 100 yards from the boat. Next was a relaxing (napping) ferry ride to Val Dez. What happens in Val Dez, stays in Val Dez. The following morning was the drive to McCarthy where we toured the Kennicot mine and river rafted. Finally a drive to Denali and a bus tour through the park where we watched bear, moose, caribou, eagles and so on. Mt. Denali was shrouded in clouds so we did not see the peak this trip. This tour is great to be able to see the diverse areas of Alaska. If anything, I would have liked to spend another day in Seward, Val Dez, and Denali but there certainly are time restraints. We began our trip in Fairbanks for 3 days on our own, which is also a great area to visit. I would highly recommend this tour.

Tour Groups: Pros, Cons & Deciding if They’re For You

  • Initially, with family (parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.)
  • With friends
  • Just the 2 of us
  • Solo travel
  • Many people have, of course, also traveled with their own families once they’re adults and have kids. Joe and I don’t have kids so we’ve never experienced that type of travel
  • Group tours

That last category, going on group tours, is really its own thing, quite different from traveling with people you know. It has its place, but also isn’t for everybody.

Going on a group tour has its own set of pros and cons. Before you go on one, it’s probably best to consider both, so you can determine if going on a group tour is something that’s for you or not.

Pros of group tours

You don’t have to plan much.

Probably one of the best parts of going on a group tour is that you don’t have to do a lot of planning. Group tours are generally pre-set, so there’s a lot less work to do ahead of time. Although you may have some free time where you’ll have to decide what to do, for the most part, the itinerary is already laid out for you.

You don’t have to worry about transportation

If you’re making your own travel plans, you have to figure out all the logistics of getting from Point A to Point B to Point C, to Point D, etc. Plane? Train? Rent a car? Even going from place to place within a city can be daunting. With a tour, they already have the bus/shuttle/flights all done for you (as an example, this would never have happened if we were on a tour)

You have the opportunity to make new friends

Meeting new people is not necessarily a positive for everyone (I’m an introvert; I totally get it).

a white sign with black text

Some group tours are even made for specific groups, such as singles, LGBTQI+, seniors, people of certain skin colors or religions, etc. So you may be in a group of people who you have something in common with.

You don’t have to travel solo

Some travelers have no one to travel with because of reasons. Going on a group tour allows you to avoid having to travel solo (this might be especially important for women, who may not feel safe going to certain locales on their own).

The safety factor

Speaking of safety for solo women travelers, some locations in the world are simply not as safe as others, regardless of gender. The mere fact that you’re part of a group can increase your safety. Your guide will also (hopefully) look out for you, since they know how to avoid potential problems.

Having a guide who’s familiar with the area can also help you from getting ripped off by merchants, warn you about potential issues ahead of time, etc. (i.e. when we were going to Angkor Wat, our guides warned us that the merchants in a particular area were particularly ruthless in trying to sell things to tourists. They told us how to respond to them [or rather, NOT respond] so the merchants would leave us alone and we wouldn’t get stuck buying something we didn’t want.

You learn more about what you’re experiencing

A tour usually has guides who are familiar with your locale and can tell you more about what you’re experiencing, as you experience it, than what you may learn on your own.

You get to do things you otherwise might not experience

Our most recent group tour was to Vietnam/Laos/Cambodia. Some of the activities included seeing things that required hiking up literally hundreds of steps.

I’m not a big fan of stairs because of my asthma. I can do the hike; it just takes me a long time because I have to rest and catch my breath so often. If there was a certain view we wanted to see, we might do the hike, albeit very slowly.

Because we were on the tour, I was able to say I’d stay at the hotel (because I didn’t want to slow the rest of the group down), and Joe was able to go on the hike with the rest of the group, at a more normal pace (read: not have to stop every 20-25 steps so I could stop gasping for breath). He might not have gone if we weren’t on the tour, instead saying let’s not bother, knowing that it would be a difficult activity for me.

A group tour may also allow you to experience activities only open to groups, or that might be difficult if the activity doesn’t have any sort of English translation and you don’t speak the language, or that you literally just wouldn’t have found on your own.

It could be cheaper

Because tours get group rates for hotels, activities, restaurants, etc., going on a tour may wind up being less expensive than if you planned everything on your own.

Budgeting is easier

When you’re on a group tour, you may still need to pay for some things. Alcoholic drinks. Souvenirs. A meal or two. Tips for your guides. But going on a group tour means it’s easier to budget because you know you have your upfront cost already done and it’s just those little incidentals to consider.

You always have someone to take your photo

Sometimes you don’t want a selfie; sometimes you want a real, full-body-with-background shot. You may be able to get a stranger to take your picture (and hope they don’t steal your camera/phone). But if you’re in a group, there’s always someone to ask to take your picture (and they may ask you, as well).

Cons of group tours

You’re generally stuck with their itinerary.

Group tours have a set itinerary and there’s little wiggle room for choice. So you may miss something you’ve always wanted to see, because it’s not on the tour. That might not always be the case (i.e. on our tour of Vietnam, a part of the group, a family of 4 said they would skip {whatever the afternoon/evening activities were] because they were going to see something else), but sometimes it can be.

The same goes for where you get to go shopping. The scheduled “shopportunities” we had on our Adventures by Disney tours were at places that sold art, jewelry, specialty coffees, etc. None of that is for me – give me a touristy crap shop ANY time. 😉 (to be fair, we went past those too. But the few times we actually stopped at places that had those, we had, like, 5 minutes to explore. We had 45 minutes at the art and jewelry place though).

Similar to being stuck with a group tour’s itinerary, you’re also pretty much married to their scheduling. Not a morning person? Sucks to be you if the first activity of the day consistently starts around 8am (I may or may not be saying that from personal experience LOL).

There’s little opportunity to be spontaneous

Because you’re on a set itinerary, being on a group tour means you don’t really get a chance to explore. See a sign for a waterfall down this path and you want to check it out? Too bad, because the group is on their way to a lookout over there.

Guided tours can be exhausting

This goes hand-in-hand with scheduling. When you travel on your own, you go at your own pace. When you’re with a guided tour, you’re at the mercy of their planning more than you’d typically do, walking faster than you’d prefer, etc. It can be a constant go-go-go for upwards of 12 hours at a time and by the time the tour is done, you need a vacation because of your vacation.

All. The. Peopleing

Group tours mean a whole lot of being and interacting with others. If you’re an extreme introvert, that may not be your idea of a great vacation.

Even if you’re not an introvert, sometimes you just may not be compatible with the other people on your tour. You may be stuck with people you really don’t like, don’t want to talk to, etc.

Your guides might not be that great

Just as you may or may not like your fellow group tour members, your tour guide could be awesome…or not. Or sometimes your main tour guides are great but your local guides may not be your cup of tea.

Yeah, I know I said the cost of a group tour could be cheaper than doing it alone. On the other hand, some group tours wind up costing more than if you did everything without a tour. You need to do your homework.

Paying up front

Going on a group tour means paying for that tour months ahead of time. For some people that could be an issue.

Are group tours for you?

Obviously, whether or not group tours are something you should consider is a Your Mileage May Vary situation.

Joe and I have been on about a half dozen Adventures by Disney group tours (the American Southwest, Australia/Tasmania, The Rockies/Banff, Hollywood/Disneyland, Ireland, and Vietnam/Laos/Cambodia). We’ve also been on one (to Cuba) that was a private tour with guides but all planned for us, and another (Iceland – here are 17 Iceland tips the guide books don’t tell you about ) where our hotels and rental car were taken care of and our itinerary included “recommended” locations but which we went to was up to us.

We’ve found that when going to a location we know little about, especially one where English is not the primary (or secondary) language, we much preferred doing a tour – that was especially true for Cuba, Iceland and our recent tour to SE Asia. We’ve also gone on one (that Disneyland tour) because it allowed us to see some behind-the-scenes things that, at least at the time, were only available to people on the tour.

Like I said, group tours have their place. They have their pros and their cons. We’ve determined they’re good for us some of the time. How about you?

I’m not a tour fan personally. The waiting on the slowest person so you can proceed to the next place you’re told to be drives me nuts. Somebody is inevitably late and that just eats into your time. I also like to wake up when I choose rather than having to put my suitcase outside my door before sunrise. You also get a lot less time to do what you want so you miss out on lots of the little experiences that make travel memorable. That said, I’m not anti-tour. It’s just not for me at this point.

4. Ice Cream or Gelato Classes

You do not need an ice cream maker to make delicious ice cream or gelato. One of the fun indoor group activities for adults is machine-less ice cream or gelato-making classes. You can purchase an online course, take an in-person class, or DIY.

Some resources for online classes:

  • Professional Gelato Making Classes and Consulting

For in-person classes, Google “local ice cream or gelato-making classes.” I found creameries and culinary schools that offer group classes in my area.

If you decide to DIY, many websites teach you how to make ice cream without an ice cream maker like:

  • Barefeet in the Kitchen
  • Handle the Heat
  • Foodiecrush.com

Some fun ice cream flavors that your group can experiment with include German chocolate cake, key lime pie, and mint chocolate chip.

5. Themed Puzzle Night

Puzzles are great activities for large or small groups. One fun puzzle idea is to create a giant crossword puzzle based on a theme—for example, a cocktail theme with a crossword puzzle highlighting international mixed drinks. You can purchase large, blank crossword puzzles online and fill in your topic. Or, you can work with a print shop to print a massive version of a custom puzzle.

A few themed puzzle ideas:

  • pop culture
  • strange stories
  • original names
  • superheroes

You can either purchase a giant crossword puzzle online or create your own using different websites like mycrosswordmaker.com .

Check out more team building puzzles .

6. International Indoor Picnic

You can hold a picnic rain or shine with an international indoor picnic. First, pick a country and coinciding cuisine.

Some ideas include:

  • Italian with Caprese salad, prosciutto and brie sandwiches, and Italian cookies
  • French with quiches, tartlets, and French wine
  • German with Reuben sandwiches, German potato salad, and strudel

Then, create a picnic ambiance with blankets, candles, and flowers. You can also partner with a luxury picnic company to set up a glamorous spread at your venue of choice.

Check out this list of fun company picnic ideas for work .

7. LEGO Art Night

You do not have to be a child to create LEGO masterpieces. A LEGO Art night is where your group can create works of art with a childhood favorite. To set up your night, gather supplies like:

  • LEGO bricks and kits
  • art canvases
  • sketching pencils
  • different stencils

Then, instruct your group to sketch a design on the canvas freehand or use a stencil to map out a plan. Next, prompt participants to bring the blueprints to life by making the structures. Finally, let the creativity flow!

8. Wheel of Fortune Games

Wheel of Fortune is a favorite classic game show that makes for a great group activity. To create a Wheel of Fortune Game for your group, purchase a prize spinning wheel, or find a digital wheel online. Then, make labels for each wheel piece like “Lose a Turn,” “Bankrupt,” and monetary numbers. Next, pick categories for your word puzzles.

For example:

  • famous quotes
  • food and drink

Finally, choose prizes for the players with the highest scores.

Check out this list of virtual game show ideas .

9. Mario Go-Kart Racing

Mario Go-Kart racing is a combination of classic go-kart racing and Mario Kart. In our version, your group races at a Go-Kart track but dresses up as characters from Mario Kart.

If you do not want to wear full costumes, there are places where you can buy character masks online.

10. Live Candyland

Candyland is a timeless game that appeals to both adults and children. A fun idea for small group activities for adults is Live Candyland, where the game comes alive with full-sized game pieces and characters. To set up the game, purchase needed supplies.

Ideas for supplies:

  • 134 educational marker squares in yellow, purple, blue, orange, green, and red
  • props for the different locations like Candy Cane Forest and Gumdrop Mountain
  • laminated character cutouts
  • lawn stakes
  • Candyland playing cards from the game
  • red, blue, yellow, and green t-shirts

To set up the game, lay out marker squares and props, closely following Candyland’s board pattern. Next, you can glue character cutouts on lawn stakes and add them to the appropriate location props. For example, place Princess Lolly in the Lollipop Forest. Then, give each player a t-shirt. Each t-shirt color represents a game piece. Next, pick someone to be the cardholder and have each board player draw a card. Finally, the player who reaches the end first wins!

11. Mock Polo Game

One of the unique large group activities for adults is a mock polo game. Inflatable horses and spongee polo sticks replace real horses and mallets in this game.

Items needed for the game:

  • spongee polo sticks
  • inflatable horses
  • spongee balls

To play the game, set up an area 300 yards long and 200 yards wide. If you do not have this much space, you can pair it down to 200 yards long and 100 yards wide. Then, divide into groups of four. Next, use stakes to set up goalposts on both ends of the field. Finally, establish the rules of the game.

Rules for Mock Polo:

  • the object of the game is to score as many goals as possible
  • there are four chukkas (plays), each seven minutes long
  • teams change ends each time a goal occurs
  • players are allowed to “bump” other players and try to get the ball from them

You can add authenticity to the event by encouraging players to wear their finest polo shirts and khakis.

12. Live Clue Game

Clue is the beloved whodunit game and is one of the top entertainment activities for adults. In Live Clue, characters come to life.

To set up your game:

  •  Send invitations to your group with specific character assignments and encourage guests to dress as their characters.
  • Collect your Clue props like a lead pipe, wrench, candlestick, revolver, knife, and rope.
  • Designate the guilty character, murder weapon, and the room where the crime occurred, then separate these cards in an envelope.
  • Set up Clue rooms like the kitchen, study, conservatory, hall, dining room, billiard room, lounge, library, and ballroom. If you do not have nine rooms to work with, combine the rooms and label them.

To play the game, give each guest an envelope with a character card, weapon card, room card, Clue sheet, and writing utensil. For the victim, add a note explaining that they need to fall to the ground and pretend to be dead when lights go out. Then, bring everyone to the room where you want the game to begin. After the lights are turned off and back on, ask the first group member to guess the murder weapon, room, and guilty character. From here, the accused player reveals his cards. The game continues with players accusing and eliminating characters, rooms, and weapons.

This activity puts a nostalgic spin on murder mystery games.

13. Roaming Dinner Party

Dinner parties are great social activities for adults and make for a fabulous way to bring a group together. In a roaming dinner party, four to five hosts provide different courses at their homes. For example, Host A provides the appetizers and cocktails, Host B provides the soup and salad course, Host C provides the main course and side dishes, Host D provides the dessert, and Host E provides a variety of wines and spirits.

You can add class and convenience to the evening by renting a limo to transport your group from house to house.

14. 5K Fun Run

One of the fun outdoor activities for adults is a group 5K. These races have fun themes and spins that make running more fun. If there is a member of your group who does not like running, then you can sweet-talk them into walking.

Some fun 5K ideas:

  • Bubble Runs where you run through waves of bubbles
  • Boozy runs where you can sample wine or beer at different race points
  • Sweet runs where different stations offer chocolate, candy, and other desserts
  • Color Runs where you get doused with colored powder at different stations
  • Zombie Runs where you are running from zombies

To find a 5K run in your area, you can either Google “local 5Ks” or use websites like active.com .

15. Sandcastle Competition

You do not have to live near a beach to host a sandcastle competition. However, if you are near that shore, that is a bonus!

To set up a sandcastle competition on a beach, locate a suitable beach. I recommend you pick a time like late afternoon or early evening to avoid large crowds. If it is in the early evening, then you can use LED lanterns to help builders see their work! Then, send out invitations. Next, purchase sandcastle building equipment. Children’s toys will do the trick and are available in bulk on sites like Amazon. Finally, pick judges and prizes for the winners.

To set up a sandcastle on a non-beach, locate a large area outside as the activity can get messy! I would also recommend laying tarps down in the work area. Then, purchase materials to make sand at local hardware stores or big box stores like Home Depot. Next, gather sandcastle building equipment like shovels and buckets. Finally, pick judges and prizes for the winners.

16. Dragon Boat Racing

Dragon boat racing is a 2,000-year-old Chinese tradition that has become popular in the United States. Like a regatta, dragon boat racers compete in boats that seat 22 people for the fastest time.

To find a race near you, you can Google “dragon boat racing near me” or use dragonboatsport.com to find a local dragon boat racing club .

Here are more team workout ideas .

17. Stargazing

You can bring the galaxy to your group with a stargazing evening. Many venues offer glimpses of the stars like planetariums, observatories, astronomical societies, and hotels.

Sites where you can find stargazing events:

  • International Planetarium Society
  • Go-astronomy.com
  • hotels like Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort & Spa
  • astronomical societies like the American Astronomical Society

To set up the event, go to the venue of your choice and determine what days work for your group according to the venue’s hours of operation.

18. Japanese Kite Building and Picnic

Pairing a Japanese kite building activity with a picnic elevates outdoor dining experiences with culture and hands-on crafts. To set up this event, first, gather supplies for your group’s Japanese kites. I recommend buying pre-made kits online, as this step will save organizers and participants time and money! Next, plan your picnic menu.

Some menu ideas:

  • Japanese egg sandwiches and Japanese potato salad
  • banana sushi

You can complete your group’s experience with Japanese blankets and LED tea lights.

19. Trampoline Park

When searching for group outing ideas for adults, consider a trampoline park! Trampoline parks are not just for children. To get your group jumping, book a private session for your attendees. First, find a trampoline park near you. You can either Google “trampoline parks near me” or utilize websites like trampolineparkguide.com . Then, decide a time for your group to go. Finally, jump, spin, and tumble like you have no worries!

20. Arcade Day

I grew up on old arcade games like Space Invaders. Although I have not played in years, the game still brings back fond memories. You can rekindle your group’s arcade memories with an arcade day. You can host the event at a local arcade or DIY a gaming lounge.

If you decide to DIY, you can buy an inexpensive projecting game like ProjeX . Then, to set up the space, you can use a wall or projector screen.

21. Glass Blowing

One of the fun social group activities for adults is glassblowing. Although the practice may sound intimidating, many museums, art institutes, and studios offer group classes for beginners. With these lessons, you can make everything from decanters to ornaments to lights!

To find a glassblowing venue near you, either Google “glass blowing near me” or search on websites like Yelp.

22. Seasonal Baking

Baking has become a popular hobby for many folks. You can channel teammates’ inner chefs by hosting a seasonal baking group activity.

To do this activity, simply select a recipe, gather your ingredients, split the group into teams, and whip up your creations. For a competitive spin, make the event a timed bake-off and recruit a panel of judges to pick a winner based on taste and presentation.

Some seasonal baking ideas:

  • Fall: salted caramel apple galettes, maple candy, and pumpkin streusel coffee cake
  • Winer: eggnog cheesecake, cranberry-orange cupcakes, and peppermint bark
  • Spring: Cadbury Egg brownies, lemon Bundt cake, and raspberry-pistachio cake
  • Summer: lemon strawberry thyme shortcake, blueberry clafoutis, and peach crisp

You can also search for local cooking classes in your area or pay for an online course that you can take as a group.

Here is a collection of online group cooking classes .

23. Wood Burning Classes

Farmhouse and rustic chic decorations are all the rage! You can get on this bandwagon by organizing a wood burning class for your group. With wood burning, you burn fun designs into wooden signs and pieces of wood.

If there is not a class near you, you can find pre-recorded wood burning classes on websites like woodburncorner.com and purchase basic wood burn kits online.

24. Food Tours

To please the foodies in your group, you can set up a food tour in your city. Food tours have become popular and there are many types to choose from like walking, cruising, biking, and driving tours.

Some unique food tour ideas from around the country:

  • Savannah Taste Experience
  • Foods of NY
  • Sicily food and wine
  • Thai Foodie Tour

To find a food tour near you, Google “food tours near me” or “private food tours.” You could also DIY your own tour by reaching out to local tour companies and restaurants.

25. Water Sports

Water sports make fun group activities for adults. Examples of these activities include sports-jet skiing, kayaking, canoeing, rowboats, and sailboats. You can have loads of group fun zipping around waterways!

There are many companies that tailor to group activities by renting out water sports equipment like atlanticwatersports.com or charter companies.

26. Bubble Soccer Extravaganza

Groups can strap on inflatable bubble suits and hit the soccer field for a hilarious and action-packed game of bubble soccer. Players bounce and bump their way to victory, fostering laughter, camaraderie, and a unique, physically engaging experience. The unconventional twist on soccer adds an element of fun that transcends traditional team sports.

27. Nerf Dart Tag

Nerf Dart Tag takes a playground game to a new level. In this activity, teams compete by tagging each other by tossing foam darts or footballs, or shooting foam blasters. Note that you should not shoot foam arrows directly at others because even toys can still be harmful, and you should establish rules like only hit shoulders and below.

This high-energy activity promotes strategic thinking, communication, and a unique blend of physical and mental agility. Not to mention, the game invokes childish fun!

28. Murder Mystery Wine Tasting

You can combine the sophistication of a wine tasting with the intrigue of a murder mystery. Participants become characters in a thrilling storyline while sampling different wines. Players must solve the mystery of the crime while guessing the blend! This activity encourages socializing, creativity, and deductive reasoning, making for an entertaining and unforgettable evening.

29. Human Foosball Championship

You can transform the classic foosball game into a life-sized, human foosball championship. Teams strap into position and compete to score goals, requiring communication, teamwork, and a sense of humor. This larger-than-life version of the game adds a physical and social twist to a familiar favorite. Plus, the game requires careful coordination and communication!

30. Interactive Drum Circle Experience

One of the best group activities for adults is an interactive drum circle experience. Led by a percussionist, participants create rhythmic beats together, promoting communication, collaboration, and stress relief. The power of music and group dynamics combine for a memorable and uplifting activity.

Pro Tip: If you do not have bongos onhand, you can improvise with items found in the office, such as empty coffee canisters or recycling bins!

31. Pour Painting

Pour painting is a technique where folks create art by pouring paint onto a canvas. This satisfyingly chaotic way to create art is therapeutic and fun and is a great activity to do as a group. You can often find art studios in your area that offer classes and experiences in the craft, or you can set up a DIY paint pour evening. Just be sure to put down tarps, as creation can get messy!

32. Aerial Silks Fitness Class

You can elevate your group’s fitness routine with an aerial silks class. Participants learn acrobatic movements and poses using suspended fabric, promoting strength, flexibility, and a sense of accomplishment. This unconventional fitness experience encourages individuals to step out of their comfort zones while building camaraderie in a supportive environment.

33. Outdoor Adventure Board Game

One of the most unexpected ways to engage groups is to create a life-sized outdoor adventure board game. Teams roll oversized dice and navigate through a giant game board, completing challenges and solving puzzles. This physical and strategic activity promotes teamwork, critical thinking, and a sense of exploration in an interactive and playful way.

34. Mindful Geocaching Adventure

You can combine the adventure of geocaching with mindfulness practices. Teams use GPS devices to locate hidden treasures while incorporating mindful meditation at each cache location. This activity promotes teamwork, problem-solving, and a sense of tranquility as participants engage with both the thrill of the hunt and moments of mindfulness.

35. Epic Sandcastle Building Challenge

Epic Sandcastle Building Challenges take a classic beach activity to the next level. Teams receive limited tools like buckets, shovels, and random decorations, and must collaborate to create intricate and imaginative sand sculptures. This hands-on and creative exercise fosters teamwork, communication, and a shared appreciation for artistic expression. Not to mention, the activity results in fantastic photo ops!

36. Human Canvas Art Workshop

A Human Canvas Art Workshop transform the team into living painbrushes. Teams work together to create a collaborative painting using their bodies and non-toxic paint. To prep the activity, have group members don full-body protective suits and booties. Then, team members will dip parts of their bodies in paint and create shapes by rolling on a canvas on the floor.

This unique and visually expressive activity encourages creativity, communication, and a shared sense of accomplishment.

37. Digital Detox Challenge

You can challenge your team to a digital detox day. This activity helps folks disconnect from electronic devices and engage in face-to-face communication, team-building exercises, and outdoor activities. This detox promotes mindfulness, interpersonal connections, and a break from the constant digital distractions, fostering a more present and cohesive team.

Simply choose a day for the detox, and have team members mute all notifications except for critical messages.

38. Collaborative Virtual Art Gallery

You can foster creativity and collaboration with a virtual art gallery project. Teams create digital artworks that will live in a collaborative virtual gallery.

You can create this gallery multiple ways, such as:

  • Google Drive Folder
  • Cloud Slideshow
  • Canva Design
  • Shared Digital Photo Album
  • Virtual Reality Platform

This activity encourages artistic expression, teamwork, and the celebration of diverse perspectives in a digital space.

39. Blacklight Paint Party

In this activity, group members paint with glow in the dark paint beneath blacklights. Many paint splatter rooms, activity centers, and smash rooms offer this service. You can also DIY the experience by getting inexpensive canvases, blacklights, and glow in the dark paint.

For a less messy and more cost-friendly alternate, you can simply get blacklights and glow in the dark markets, then have participants show up with white T-shirts. Partygoers will take turns doodling on each other’s T-shirts. If folks feel uncomfortable wearing the shirts and having others touch them, then there is an option to leave the shirts on the table!

40. Takeout Potluck

In this activity, group members each get a takeout item from a different restaurant. Then, folks divide the dishes up equally, and every group member gets a portion to try. This exercise is a great way to try many different cuisines and restaurants, and is all the communal fun of potluck without the preparation.

Life gets busy and many folks have trouble keeping connected. Fun group activities are a way to bring friends, family, and coworkers together regards of group size. The key to planning a group activity is planning an idea that the group is enthusiastic about as a whole. One way to ensure this is to give your group three activity options, then put the selection to a vote. Another important consideration is that activities don’t have to be time-consuming or expensive to be a hit. Sometimes the simplest ideas are the most impactful.

14 Best Senior-friendly Travel Groups

These senior-friendly travel companies offer tours and travel experiences as diverse as their clients.

tour group fun

The benefits of travel, whether it's a refreshing weekend getaway or a month-long trip to a new destination, are undeniable. And for retirees and seniors who have time and a travel budget, the opportunities are nearly endless — their own city, state, country, and even the whole world are all waiting to be explored.

It should be recognized that seniors are as diverse as any other generation, perhaps even more so as their years of experience have taken them in many directions. While their interests, abilities, values, and habits may vary, it can safely be said that for many, travel is in their plans.

Seniors travel to visit family, learn about the countries of their ancestors , or explore new destinations. Many seek immersive experiences, educational opportunities, or adventure. And travel companies are responding to their needs and wishes by offering tour options ranging from independent to fully guided, budget to luxury, and group to individual. The 14 organizations listed below are either aimed specifically at mature clients or feature experiences that are flexible enough to accommodate a variety of travelers.

Walking the World

Operating out of Grand Junction, Colorado, Walking the World offers walking and hiking tours mainly for travelers over the age of 50 who want to be immersed in the destinations they choose. Experienced hikers will enjoy its Rocky Mountain National Park tour , for example, with treks of up to 10 miles on some days during the eight-day itinerary. Meanwhile, the Ireland trip covers 11 days of exploring fishing villages, rolling green hills, the stunning Cliffs of Moher, the Dingle Peninsula, and Killarney National Park. Daily walks range from four to eight miles and are described as gentle to moderate.

Road Scholar

Originally launched as Elderhostel in 1975, the company rebranded in 2010 as Road Scholar , recognizing the values and interests of lifelong learners who have participated in their lectures, tours, field trips, and educational experiences over the years. St. Petersburg Russia Tours

St. Petersburg is one of the world’s most beautiful cities. It was built on a collection of islands where the Neva River meets the Gulf of Finland and is divided further by a system of canals earning the city the name the Venice of the North. St. Petersburg was referred to as Peter the Great’s Window to the West because the great Tsar and reformer Peter the First designed the city to be Russia’s most European. The European feeling of the city is as true today as it was during the early 1700s. The embankments and boulevards are full of 18th and 19th century palaces of the nobility giving St. Petersburg an almost fairytale atmosphere. The historical city center is huge and dominated by the Winter Palace (former residence of the Tsars) which now houses the world famous Hermitage Museum . St. Petersburg Russia indeed is one of the most romantic and beautiful cities on earth. Our company is based in St. Petersburg, Russia allowing us to offer the widest variety of St. Petersburg Russia tours and excursions available on the Internet. All of our tours are designed so that our guests experience maximum enjoyment and become immersed in the culture and history of this great, Russian city. All our tours are private and can be fully customized upon your request. You can either choose one of our ready-made packages or create your own. Because we are locally based, we can offer excellent prices and the most knowledgeable guides in the city.

St. Petersburg in the 19th century

St. Petersburg – a Historical Gem

The city has witnessed some of the most dramatic and important moments in Russian history since its founding in 1703 by Peter the Great , making the city especially important for curious travelers coming to Russia. St. Petersburg was the scene of the Decembrist uprising , the famous court of Tsarina Catherine the Great , the assassination of Tsar Pavel and Alexander II and the home of Rasputin , the Siberian mystic. The last Tsar, Nicholas the II, was overthrown at the Winter Palace and the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution and Lenin brought communism to power here. After the revolution, the name of the city was changed to Leningrad. During the Second World War, Leningrad was under siege and fully blockaded by the Nazis for almost 3 years, resulting in the deaths of up to 1.5 million of its citizens. Our St. Petersburg tours take you to the places associated with many of these events and more.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time of year to go to st petersburg.

St Petersburg is a spectacular city regardless of the time of year, it all depends on your itinerary. Summertime can be wonderfully warm and brings the White Nights, nearly 24-hours of sunshine and a party atmosphere. However, St Petersburg will be very busy and accommodation can be much more expensive. St Petersburg is quite cold in winter, but enchantingly beautiful and with less crowds. The worst weather takes place in November and March. Check to see if your visit will coincide with Russia’s holidays and festivals, and for more information about the best time to visit, read our guide .

How many days are enough in St. Petersburg?

With a carefully planned and researched itinerary you can see St Petersburg’s main sights over a long weekend. St Petersburg’s city centre is compact compared to Moscow’s, and its most famous attractions are reachable by foot from one another. Find centrally located accommodation, acquaint yourself with public transport, and book tickets in advance so that you can skip the queues. To make the most of a short trip, check out our informative St Petersburg city tours with options to suit all interests.

Is it safe to walk around St Petersburg, Russia?

Walking around St Petersburg is no more dangerous than exploring any European city if you are sensible with your belongings and use common sense. The city centre rarely feels isolated as it is quite compact, and many bars and restaurants are open 24/7. During White Nights there are nearly 24 hours of sunlight, meaning that you’ll never venture anywhere in the dark. If you travel by taxi make sure to book in advance, or take public transport, which is perfectly safe and tourist-friendly. For more information, read our guide about staying safe in Russia .

Do they speak English in St. Petersburg?

St Petersburg is Russia’s most western-leaning city and staff in city centre restaurants, hotels, shops and attractions can generally accommodate English speaking tourists. There are also English-speaking tourist police. The metro and bus service maps have English translations, and intercom announcements are also made in English. If you’d prefer to travel by taxi, the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber) works in multiple languages, although it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. Younger Russians are more likely to speak basic English than older Russians, but Google Translate is useful if you get completely stuck.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Selecting Funny Travel Group Names

“Ever chuckled at a travel group name and thought, ‘Wow, wish I’d thought of that!’?” Selecting a funny travel group name isn’t just about a quick laugh.

It’s an art that sets the tone for your entire trip. We’ll take a look at the dos and don’ts, blending humor and wisdom.

Do: Reflect Your Group’s Personality

Your travel group name should be a mirror reflecting your collective personality. Are you a band of history buffs, beach bums, or adrenaline junkies?

Let your name shout it out! A study from the Journal of Brand Management shows that names with character associations create stronger group identities.

Go ahead, be ‘The Time-Traveling Historians’ if that’s your jam!

Don’t: Overcomplicate It

Simplicity is key. Remember, the best jokes are the ones easily understood.

A Harvard Business Review study highlights that simplicity in naming can lead to better recall and engagement.

‘The Giggle Gang’ beats ‘The Group of Individuals Who Laugh Frequently’ any day!

Do: Be Culturally Sensitive

Humor varies across cultures. What’s funny in one place might be offensive in another.

A survey by the International Journal of Humor Research found that cultural context significantly influences humor perception.

If your group name is a pun, make sure it’s universally tasteful.

Don’t: Forget the Memorable Factor

Your group name should stick in people’s minds. According to a study in the Journal of Advertising Research, names that evoke visual imagery are more memorable.

As an alternative to Group 3B, consider ‘The Roaming Gnomes’ instead.

Do: Test It Out

Before finalizing, test your name. Does it make your group members smile? Does it feel right?

A study in Group Dynamics: Theory, Research, and Practice shows that group consensus on names enhances bonding.

So, make sure everyone’s on board with ‘The Wandering Waffles’!

Don’t: Ignore Practicality

A hotel lobby might call out your group’s name. Is it too long? Too awkward? Practicality matters.

Research in the field of linguistics suggests that names that are easy to pronounce foster better social interactions.

‘The Nomad Ninjas’ rolls off the tongue easier than ‘The Peripatetic Practitioners of Picaresque Peregrination.’

Do: Have Fun With It

Above all, have fun! The whole point of a funny travel group name is to start your journey with a smile.

A study in the Psychology of Aesthetics, Creativity, and the Arts found that creativity in group activities enhances enjoyment. So, let your creative flags fly high!

How to Name Your Travel Group Names

A group name can help define the culture of your community in just one word. This post will give you a quick guide to choose the perfect group name.

Start by Defining What Your Community Is About

The first thing you have to decide is what you want your group to accomplish. Are you looking to meet new friends? Do you want to share knowledge? Maybe you want to form a team. Whatever it is, you have to figure out what type of experience you’re trying to offer before choosing a group name.

Here are some examples:

  • Pads Vacation
  • StayinMotion
  • Sky High Travel Club
  • Be Boundless
  • Travel Micro
  • Joker Destination
  • Ultima Destination
  • Dream Holiday Makers
  • Amigo Getaways
  • Travel Touch
  • Caring Crossings
  • Luxe Life Travel
  • Vacation Climate
  • Turnkey Trips

Consider the Culture’s Language

Once you know what you’re offering, then you’ll be able to determine what kind of language you want your community members to speak. Do they want to talk about food? Sports? Politics? Technology? All of those topics fit into different cultures. If you want to attract members from different communities, you have to pick a name that fits.

You Can Always Change It Up Later

If you come up with a bunch of ideas and none of them seem to work, there’s no harm in changing the name later. Just be sure to let everyone know so they don’t get confused.

7 of the best all-inclusive experiences to book this year, from a travel planner

  • As a travel planner, my clients seem to be increasingly interested in all-inclusive trips .
  • Some of my favorite luxury resorts are in Costa Rica, the Maldives, and Isla Mujeres.
  • Cruises, group tours, and adults-only lodgings can also come with all-inclusive options.

Insider Today

As a travel planner at Marvelous Mouse Travels , I know vacations are expensive — especially if you're looking to go somewhere this summer . But all-inclusive travel is often a great way to get the most value out of a luxury experience.

I've been on several all-inclusive vacations with my family, friends, and work, and I've helped other people book them in destinations around the world .

Here are some of the best all-inclusive experiences I'm recommending to my clients this year.

Try a split-stay vacation to see the best of Costa Rica.

tour group fun

Costa Rica is one of the most sought-after vacations , and for good reason. It's great for both relaxation and adventure.

I recommend booking a split stay, starting at an all-inclusive resort in Guanacaste near the beach for some fun in the sun and moving to a resort near the famous Arenal Volcano for a jungle adventure.

Some of my favorite resorts in Costa Rica are the Westin Reserva Conchal and the Dreams Las Mareas. And if you're looking for an even more unique experience, check out the glorious swim-out suites with private pools at Dreams.

Baglioni Maldives is one of my favorite all-inclusive resorts.

tour group fun

The Maldives, a remote set of islands in the Indian Ocean, offers a plethora of resort options for couples and families, but Baglioni Maldives is my favorite.

For many in the US, getting to the islands can be daunting — there are very few direct commercial flights, and it can take almost an entire day. But it's hard to beat the country's luxury accommodations and gorgeous landscape.

The Maldives also has some of the most beautiful marine life and coveted spots for snorkeling and scuba diving.

No matter where you go, overwater bungalows are the ultimate all-inclusive splurge.

tour group fun

Overwater bungalows — villas standing on poles over open ocean water — are prevalent at all-inclusive resorts in destinations like the Maldives, Fiji, and Bali.

But I've also come across the luxurious accommodations at select adults-only Sandals Resorts throughout the Caribbean.

I think having a private villa on the water is the perfect way to unwind and relax.

Adults-only vacations are on the rise.

tour group fun

Traveling with kids can be a blast, but I also think it's important for adults to take a much-needed break on their own.

Adults-only resorts have been a total respite for me and my husband after hectic months of juggling work with our kids' school and sports schedules.

If you're looking to unwind with a partner, relax on a girls' trip, or even connect with your adult children, there are countless adults-only, all-inclusive resorts to choose from, depending on where you're looking to visit.

Some properties, including Sandals and Beaches Resorts, also offer butler service. Designated staff members can help with anything from room requests and dining reservations to cabana rentals and transportation coordination.

I upgraded to the service at my favorite adults-only spot, Le Blanc Los Cabos, and I felt totally pampered.

Isla Mujeres is pure luxury.

tour group fun

Isla Mujeres, a small island off the coast of Cancún, is known for its crystal-clear, turquoise water and peaceful vibe. It's also home to Playa Norte, one of the best beaches in Mexico .

Impressions Isla Mujeres by Secrets is a gorgeous all-inclusive resort on the island. It offers luxury at its finest, but with only 125 rooms, it has a boutique feel.

One of my favorite features of the resort is the waterslide that leads right into the beautiful ocean.

There are plenty of all-inclusive packages at sea.

tour group fun

Cruising is one of the most popular vacations , whether it's an epic adventure on a Royal Caribbean Cruise, a couples-only journey on Virgin Voyages, or a regal tour of Europe on Viking River Cruises.

Although cruises aren't traditionally considered all-inclusive, with the right booking, they can have the same feel as a luxury resort.

Most cruise bookings include food, nonalcoholic drinks, and live entertainment. If you add beverage packages and excursions in advance, your trip should be fully paid for before you depart.

Book a small-group or private tour if you're looking for adventure.

tour group fun

Group travel is a great way to explore new places while soaking up culture and history.

Popular destinations include Italy, Japan, Costa Rica, and Alaska, and many travel companies take care of everything for you, essentially making it all-inclusive.

I like Adventures by Disney , which offers small-group travel all over the world facilitated by seasoned guides. All the trip details are taken care of, including experiences, food, lodging, and transportation.

Additionally, Kensington Tours offers luxury private travel where every facet of the trip is meticulously planned for you.

These Are Going to Be the Most Popular Travel Destinations in 2024

A lready thinking about where you want to travel in 2024 ? If you’re hoping to hit the hottest travel destinations of the year, Expedia Group is here to help. The one-stop travel site—alongside Hotels.com and VRBO—just released Unpack '24 , a travel trends analysis for the coming year. In addition to detailing the projected top 10 most popular international destinations of 2024, the site also revealed 10 “dupes” for travelers looking to perhaps spend a bit less, as well as those hoping to be surrounded by fewer fellow tourists. Additionally, they revealed 10 affordable cities where the world’s biggest musical acts are set to perform, as well as where to travel if you live a sober lifestyle.

“At Expedia Group, we have extensive first-party travel data that we use to enhance and curate experiences for our travelers across Expedia, Hotels.com, and Vrbo,” Jon Gieselman, president of Expedia Brands, says in the report. “These insights shape our travel forecasts, revealed in Unpack '24, enabling our travelers to be the first to discover and book the most desired trips before they become well-beaten paths.”

Ready to ignite your travel bug? Ahead, discover the most popular travel destinations of 2024.

The Top 10 Travel Destinations of 2024

Expedia Group predicts that travelers are most likely to jet set to destinations popularized in fan-favorite TV shows and movies. According to the report, “More than half of travelers say they’ve researched or booked a trip to a destination after seeing it on a TV show or in a movie. In fact, travelers say TV shows influence their travel decisions more than Instagram, TikTok, and podcasts.” With that in mind, they reveal that the top 10 travel destinations of 2024 are as follows:

  • Thailand - Featured in White Lotus , Season 3—which has sadly been pushed to premiere in 2025

Wrexham and its Hollywood owners are halfway to the promised land.

Playing in the Premier League — the world’s richest and most popular soccer league — might not be such a fanciful notion, after all, for a club that not so long ago was success-starved, financially stricken and languishing in the fifth tier of the English game.

Under the ownership of celebrities Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney since 2021, Wrexham has achieved two successive promotions — the latest being clinched on Saturday when the team was assured of going up to third-tier League One.

Two more promotions and Wrexham will be mixing it with the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United in the Premier League.

That, though, may take some time.

Before that, Wrexham’s players have a league title to go for, some post-season celebrations to enjoy — Las Vegas, anyone? — and another U.S. preseason tour to make before starting their bid for a third straight promotion.

Here’s what lies ahead for the Welsh team whose extraordinary journey is being chronicled in the popular show “Welcome to Wrexham”:

TITLE CHANCE?

Claiming one of the three automatic promotion spots in League Two was the first aim and that has been achieved with two games to spare. Now, Wrexham has a chance to win some hardware by finishing in first place and capturing the title. It won’t be easy. Wrexham is in second place, four points behind Stockport, which has three games left. If Stockport isn’t able to clinch first place by winning either of its next two matches, the title could be up for grabs when Wrexham hosts Stockport at the Racecourse Ground on the final day of the season. It’s expected that Reynolds and McElhenney will be there for an occasion which will be a day of celebrations whatever happens.

POST-SEASON PARTY

The season hasn’t finished yet but the promotion party has already begun . Wrexham’s players were pictured — and filmed — enjoying themselves in a town-center pub on Sunday, a day after beating Forest Green 6-0 to spark a pitch invasion at the Racecourse Ground. Paul Mullin , the star striker and top scorer, was seen in the pub standing on a chair with his arms out and his eyes closed in front of his smiling teammates, who mixed with members of the public. After winning the fifth-tier National League last year, the squad was treated to a trip to Las Vegas by the owners — and the players might be headed to Sin City again. Asked what message was sent to Reynolds and McElhenney after sealing promotion, midfielder Elliot Lee said: “We’ve just told them to fire up the jet for Vegas!”

Wrexham has already booked in another preseason tour of the United States, just like last year. Only one match has been confirmed so far, and that’s against Chelsea in Santa Clara, California, on July 24. Wrexham played Chelsea and Manchester United as part of a four-match preseason trip to the U.S. in July 2023 that contained fixtures in North Carolina, Los Angeles, San Diego and Philadelphia in a 10-day span. It might have helped Wrexham grow its fanbase but might not been ideal in terms of travel and season preparation. Wrexham may choose to stay in and around the west coast this time and ensure the squad is back home in plenty of time to prepare for the start of the League One season on Aug. 10.

LIFE IN LEAGUE ONE

So what awaits Wrexham’s players in League One? For starters, they’re likely to have home and away matches against Shrewsbury, one of their big local rivals. They haven’t been in the same league since 2008, though Wrexham did beat Shrewsbury in the FA Cup this season. Wigan, a Premier League team and FA Cup winner barely a decade ago, is in the third tier, as might be Bolton and Blackpool — other teams who have been in the top flight this century. Wrexham is set to receive a cash boost of around $2 million from being in League One — more than half of which comes in the form of a “solidarity payment” handed down by Premier League clubs — that will help pay for some new signings. Deloitte has reported that the average League One team generates around $11 million in revenue but Wrexham is on course to top that, helped by its wider appeal likely making the team a popular watch on iFollow — the streaming service used by the English Football League. Indeed, Wrexham’s latest accounts showed that its turnover in the financial year of 2022-23 was $13.3 million, even if its losses increased to $6.4 million. Meanwhile, Wrexham will look to push on with the renovation of its Kop stand at one end of the Racecourse to boost its capacity, and therefore its gate receipts. There is a temporary stand in place at the moment, helping to lift attendances for home matches to more than 15,000. If Wrexham wanted any inspiration on its journey through the leagues, it just needs to look at Luton, which went from the fifth tier to the Premier League in nine years (2014-2023).
