Touring Kayaks, Sea Kayaks, Ocean Kayaks

tour kayak

Touring kayaks, ocean kayaks, and sea kayaks are going to be longer, more narrow kayaks than a recreational kayak . They are designed to travel faster and track straighter. Compare touring models, technical specifications, kayak materials, and read touring kayak reviews here! For more advice, read the full touring kayaks guide below.

What is a Sea Kayak?

A sea kayak is typically a sit inside, or closed-deck model, kayak over 14 feet in length with built-in flotation fore and aft. They sometimes come with a rudder or skeg to aid in tracking. Also referred to as touring kayaks and ocean kayaks, these boats are made for paddling open water and can also be used easily in class I river conditions. This style of kayak has a wide array of uses ranging from gentle rivers and lakes on up to multi-week ocean expeditions. When taking kayak lessons, you will most likely be taught in this type of boat because the skills you learn easily transfer to other types of kayaks.

What To Look For In A Touring Kayak

There are several characteristics that most touring kayaks will have in common:

  • Kayak length will be over 14ft and would be characterized as longer, skinnier boats
  • Touring kayaks are built for speed and tracking, which means they will not have the primary stability that a wider, rec boat will have
  • Touring kayaks typically have hatches for storage to keep your gear dry
  • Hatches means there are usually bulkheads, which are dividers that split the kayak up into different compartments in case your cockpit gets filled with water

Sea Kayaking & Ocean Kayaking

If you are ever planning on sea kayaking, ocean kayaking, or expedition kayaking, you'll need a touring kayak. Since you'll be more vulnerable to the elements, you need to be sure you're in a boat that can handle the wind and the waves. The narrow cockpit allows for the use of a sprayskirt to keep you dry and will enable you to edge your kayak when needed.

If you are ever planning to go expedition kayaking, you need to be sure you are prepared for safety and dressed for immersion !

The 7 Best Kayaking Trips in the U.S. for Adventure Seekers

Some of the most beautiful places in the U.S. are best seen from the water.

Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

tour kayak

There's something extra special about spending a day out on the water , letting it pull you where it wants. And it doesn't matter whether you're paddling around a calm coastal bay in Alaska or flying down a Class III rapid in Georgia — with the cool water below you, warm sun all around you, and an ever-changing landscape that might include red-rock canyon walls, lush overhangs, or even a pod of passing orca whales, the experience is bound to be wonderful.

There are hundreds of amazing kayaking trips across the U.S., but to help you narrow it down, we curated a list that offers a little something for everyone, from newbies looking for perfectly flat waters to advanced kayakers interested in careening down a Class IV rapid. Just make sure to secure the proper permit and practice good stewardship on whatever trip you choose. And don't forget the proper apparel .

Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

When it comes to pure, natural beauty, Alaska is hard to top. And that beauty is only enhanced from the water. While you won't find any rapids or whitewater off the shores of Glacier Bay National Park, you will spot glaciers, puffins, sea lions, and even orca or humpback whales.

If you're interested in booking an overnight trip during the summer (a must), make sure to register for a free permit .

Colorado River, Arizona

The great Colorado River traverses several states — Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and California — and while you could technically float the entire way, you'd need some serious paddling skills and a surefire plan to do so. To get a taste of the Colorado , head to Arizona and run the relatively mild 15-mile section of the river from Glen Canyon to Lees Ferry. And don't forget to look up, so you get the full effect of the red-rock canyon walls and near-constant bluebird skies.

You don't need a permit to float to Lees Ferry, but if you want to continue on, you'll need to secure one.

Klamath River, California

For a beginner-friendly river trip, check out Klamath River . The water may flow out of Oregon with gusto (Class IV water), but it mellows out in California. For a great family experience, put in at Happy Camp and enjoy the views on the 20-mile journey to Dillon Creek. Along the way, you'll come across natural swimming holes, cliff-jumping spots, waterfalls, and some Class II and III rapids. Enjoy great waterfront camping and keep an eye on the skies above — bald eagles roam these parts.

A whitewater rafting permit is not required, but a fire permit is necessary.

Allagash Wilderness Waterway, Maine

If you have your heart set on an East Coast expedition, head to northern Maine. The Allagash Wilderness Waterway flows through an expansive, underdeveloped part of the state and boasts moose, bears, and blueberries along the way. For a full, multiday trip, put in at Churchill Dam and float till you reach Allagash Village, a section that has Class II rapids, lakes, and a short but mandatory portage around the Allagash Falls (well worth the effort).

You'll need to register before you put in and be prepared to pay camping fees.

San Juan Islands, Washington

If sea life is what you seek, head to the San Juan Islands in Washington. Located near the U.S.-Canada border, this string of islands is home to orca whale pods all year round. Plus, it's known for regular sightings of sea lions, seals, dolphins, and otters.

You can book anything from a half-day to multiday kayaking trip around the islands, but we suggest giving yourself plenty of time to explore the smaller islands off Lopez Island, paddle through the protected waters around Orcas Island, and try your luck at spotting a resident orca pod off San Juan Island.

Chattooga River, Georgia

Georgia's Chattooga River has some Class V rapids, but most people plan out a more family-friendly trip that traverses Section 2 and 3 of the river. During Section 2 , you'll float over and around Class I and II rapids, as well as enjoy calmer sections of the deep, crystal-clear water. After seven miles on Section 2, you can take out or continue on to the more difficult (and more remote) Section 3 — home to rapids that reach up to Class IV.

You can self-register for a permit to run the Chattooga River when you put in.

Middle Fork of the Salmon, Idaho

If you're up for more of a challenge, plan a kayaking trip down the Middle Fork of the Salmon — a journey found on almost every river lover's bucket list . The river has some serious Class III and IV rapids, but it's also known for its superior fly fishing, so make sure to cast a line when the water calms.

A permit is required to float the Middle Fork of the Salmon and a lottery takes place during the busy summer months.

The Most Adventurous Place In New York City ★★★★★

Manhattan Kayak Co logo

The staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, and they want you to have a great experience on the water. Whether you're a total newbie or an expert paddler, they support you at the right level. They have something for everyone -- practice sessions in the protected cove, short jaunts up and down the river, longer trips across the river to Jersey, and more. And there is nothing like being on the Hudson, open skies above you as the light reflects off the Manhattan skyline. It's an amazing adventure (and a pretty good workout to boot!)

First of all, I don't know how to swim. So the whole experience being on the water in a small kayak was terrifying for me. But I gave it a try. Now I feel confident and having so much fun! It’s truly a life-changing experience! The team is very knowledgeable and patient. They help you to build this skill step by step. Very supportive and atmosphere! You are the best!

I’ve taken Basic Kayaking 1 and 2 there so far and am really impressed. The teachers absolutely know what they’re doing and make sure that students learn techniques correctly. They’re attentive, yet foster independence in students. Going out on open water in a small boat is something that should be taken very seriously and that’s exactly how they approach it. Kayaking is pretty challenging but learning from dedicated educated instructors makes it that much easier.

Just came back from the July 4th Skyline Tour. Our guide Jeffrey was great. We had little pre lessons of basic kayaking strategies before heading down to the water. The weather was good today. We took a lot of nice pictures. The facilities of the company were good too. Free lockers, lock and water. I saw the pin map on the wall and there was no pin in my city yet. I dropped the first pin there! Overall, I really like to recommend this place to everyone!

My wife & I greatly enjoyed our rentals at Manhattan Kayak. Making an online reservation was quick, easy, and super affordable. The staff was knowledgeable, friendly, and very kind to our two small dogs. The equipment was top level, and the cove was amazing. We cannot wait to go back and make this a regular family summer activity. The staff strictly enforced social distancing and sanitation. Everyone wore masks until after launching and the equipment was immediately put into cleaning stations when we were done. They are very dog friendly which is always a plus!

MKC is an outstanding company and I would give them 10 stars if I could. They went out of their way to accommodate me on short notice and I am so grateful for the experience. Paddle boarding is my favorite hobby, so when it turned out that I would have a free afternoon while on a work trip to NYC, I naturally looked at possibility of paddle boarding. Most places are closed for the season or were too far to be reasonable for me to get to via public transit so it didn’t look like it would work out. But I reached out and they made it happen! They set me up with a private guide Robyn who made me feel comfortable and safe. The location is spectacular, right on the Hudson with unbeatable views of Manhattan. Without a doubt, this paddle boarding excursion was the biggest highlight of my trip!

I taught myself stand up paddle boarding by doing it on vacations. But I decided I love stand SUP enough that I wanted to learn good form. Now realize how much I've just been muscling through it. I took the four pack lesson and it's been enlightening. The instructors are awesome. A special shout out to Judy whose great at breaking down the mechanics and videotaped me to showed me what I needed help with.

Definitely worth it! This was my first time kayaking and I had the time of my life. It was well organized and we had guides that helped us throughout the trip. They explained everything to us and even took pictures of us. My experience was amazing and I'm definitely going kayaking with them again.

I’m usually pretty scared of going outside and on the water, but the friendly staff at Manhattan Kayak made me my experience great! The cove between the Intrepid and Manhattan Kayak is a great place to get out on the water while feeling safe and secure!

My first beginner class was yesterday and it was a wonderful experience. Instructor Jay was patient, detailed, experienced and absolutely not pushy or hurried. It was a safe environment inside a defined area to practice as part of the class. Every personnel involved was friendly and relaxed. The small but clean facility is comfortable. A mini New England feel in the middle of NYC. Would absolutely recommend a try.

I had the most amazing first time kayaking experience! Thanks to our very professional and knowledgeable instructors Jay and Davis. As a first-time kayaker (as in first time to ride a kayak and paddle), there's nervousness but Jay assured me that everything's gonna be ok and it was! Thank you Jay, you're a very effective instructor! Looking forward to complete my training!

I love this place! It is so well run and inviting that you can focus on the pleasure or adventure of your experience on the water and know that you are in good hands. You can be a recreational kayaker / SUPer in protected waters or go for more adventurous tours after lessons. I decided to do the lessons this past summer after being an on-and-off recreational kayaker here for a few years. After the kayak / SUP basics class series, I went on guided group paddles in the Hudson with their encouraging and helpful staffers and have recently learned how to cold-water kayak safely and go on longer, more physically challenging group trips. Just an amazing activity with a great group. Highly recommend!

Took my wife and 4 kids on the kayak and snorkel tour. Our two tour guides were great to work with. They were helpful and made sure everyone was safe and enjoyed their trip. We had an 11, 14, 16, and 18 year old with us.

You are given kayaking instruction so that you’re comfortable being out on the water. It was my first time kayaking but I felt safe, confident, and just really excited to be out in the ocean. They want you to feel safe and they want you to have fun!

This was an incredible experience! The staff aids you getting in, out and through the water and they were so helpful, nice and attentive…I got to see some sea lions and seals up close…which was absolutely amazing!

La Jolla Kayak has been my favorite place for kayak tours and rentals since they opened about 20 years ago. We have taken probably dozens of family and friends, and everyone always loves it.

The Gorge Underground Kayak and SUP tours are fine for beginners. There is no wind, waves, or current in the mine, so it is a gentle, easy paddle. It is very dark, but everyone will have a helmet with a headlamp, and the guides will have a spotlight to highlight different features of the mine. There will be a quick intro to paddling given for each craft before departure.

It’s 50 degrees underground, so dress in light athletic quick drying layers (you may get a bit damp depending on your paddling skill), extra pair of socks (no shoes allowed in clear kayaks), gloves (great idea) and comfortable shoes. Kids tends to get colder, so dress them warmly. We rent neoprene socks and mitts on the deluxe tours for $2.00 if needed.

We try our best to keep you dry, but there are times when you may get a little wet. There may be a little bit of water in the bottom of your kayak, and sometimes the seats are a bit wet. Some people also get wet from the water dripping off their paddles, but if you hold your paddle low this should not be a problem. There are also a few places in the mine where the water drips from the ceiling, but your guides will direct you around these places.

The mine stays a constant temperature of about 52 degrees year round, and the water temperature stays about 40 degrees.

No, it really doesn’t. The entire tour is underground in the mine, so our tours go out rain or shine! (In fact, some people prefer to go on a rainy day so they can do other activities when it’s sunny.)

Yes, we do have some tandem kayaks. If you would prefer to use a tandem with someone in your group, simply let the guides know when you get there, and they will pull out a tandem for you to use. Pricing is still by person.

We provide all necessary equipment.

Kayak Tours : Kayak, Paddle, PFD, Helmet & Headlamp

Clear Bottom Kayak Tours:  Kayak, Paddle, PFD, Helmet & Headlamp

SUP Tours : NRS Inflatable Stand Up Paddle Board or Hylife Sit & Stand Hybrid Board, Paddle, PFD, Helmet & Headlamp.

Boat Tour : Boat, PFD, Helmet & Headlamp

Ride Along Child Ticket: PFD, Helmet & Headlamp

The cave boat tour is probably the best choice if you have small children. All children need to be at least about 40 lbs. and able to wear a PFD and helmet and sit still for the full hour-long tour.

The Gorge Underground is dark, but everyone will have a helmet with a headlamp, and the guides also have spotlights to point out various features in the mine.

We’re sorry, but we cannot accommodate children under 3 years of age.

We have had a few, but it doesn’t happen very often at all. The kayaks are relatively stable and are safe even for beginners. The Stand Up Paddle boards are also very wide and stable. A guide with rescue training goes on every tour, just in case.

30 minutes prior to your tour time

Yes! We highly recommend booking tours in advance. In the busy season many of our tours will fill up, and during the slow season, we need to know what tours are going out so that we have guides available.

The tours last one hour, but you will need to arrive 30 minutes prior to your tour time for check in and to put on gear.  Deluxe Tours  last 90 minutes for extra time to explore.

The Gorge Underground does not allow any pets on tour.

The Gorge Underground is open year round! We have more tours during the summer and fall, but we have tours available during every season! (The mine stays about 52 degrees year round, so the water in the mine never freezes!)

If you are coming with more than 12 people, we highly recommend our cave boat tour which can accommodate up to 20 people.

We limit our kayak tours to 12 people and our SUP tours to 10 because it becomes very difficult to hear the guides when you are spread out in a bigger group. For larger family groups or church/scout groups, we occasionally make exceptions to this rule at the manager’s discretion.

Yes! You can get a 10% group discount if you have at least 12 people and one person is paying for the whole group. For church/scout group discounts, please call the office at 844-254-6244.

(Group discounts and church/scout discounts are not available on Saturdays or holiday weekends.)

We understand that sometimes plans change. Please read our policy fully.

Due to the specialty nature of our events and our limited availability we  DO NOT OFFER REFUNDS.  Tickets can be rescheduled  NO LESS  than 7 days before event! A change fee of $10 will be applied per reservation. If you need to reschedule the week of the event you will be charged 50% of your booking as a rescheduling fee. Changes made less than 48 hours prior to tour are not allowed. Ensure you arrive a minimum of 30 minutes prior to your tour time.

No shows are not eligible for rescheduling, gift card, or refund.

We reserve the right to decline any person as a tour participant if the person’s behavior, health, or mental condition impedes the operation of the tour.

Kayaking tour reviews

Kayaking tour faqs, how fit do i need to be to participate in a kayaking trip.

You don’t need to be a super athlete! But a general level of health and fitness is needed to make the most of the experience. The physical level of kayaking and other activities differs between trips, so be sure to read the Essential Trip Information in detail to understand what level of exercise is involved.

If you’re not sure if you’re able to participate in any of our Active Adventure trips, visit your doctor to see if you’re in healthy shape to fully enjoy the activities included.

Do I need to train for a kayaking trip?

Training isn't necessary, but as many of our trips can involve multiple days of hiking, biking and water-based activities, it’s generally a good idea to start walking more at home, upping your pace at the gym or undertaking regular cardio exercise prior to the trip.

Will I get to experience the local culture on a kayaking trip?

Outdoor activities and being immersed in nature are a focus of our Active Adventures, but we also know that a lot of the fun happens on the sidelines. That's why these trips still feature the same local interactions and real-life experiences that are a hallmark of the Intrepid experience. Our aim is to help you discover a destination in a new way while learning about the culture and its people.

Do I need to bring equipment with me?

No. There is no compulsory equipment on any of the trips. Bikes, kayaks and safety gear will be provided for you, however, it's important to check the packing list for each particular itinerary as there may be items we suggest you bring, such as cycling gloves (that may come useful on other activities like zip-lining), gel seats, day packs or water shoes. Check the packing list of your trip for a full list, including what clothing and footwear might be needed.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance?

Absolutely. Because of the active nature of our trips, we require all travellers to hold an appropriate level of insurance coverage prior to departure. This includes coverage for included and optional activities on your tour. Most insurance providers will cover all the activities we offer on our trips, but it's important you read your product information summary (or equivalent insurance policy document) carefully to ensure you're covered.

When reviewing your insurance coverage, keep an eye out for included activities such as Via Ferrata, rafting and high-altitude trekking (checking what exact altitude you are covered for is essential). If you have problems finding insurance, please  contact our adventure consultants for further advice.

Who will carry my luggage for me?

We take care of all the little details so you can focus on spotting wildlife or paddling those rapids. We transport your main luggage for you while you are trekking, cycling or kayaking, but we recommend carrying a day pack to hold a few essential items such as sunscreen, snacks, camera, water bottle and any other items you may need for the day.

Spot Tons Of Marine Life On This Popular Clear Water Kayaking Tour In A Caribbean Gem

W hen it comes to exploring the Caribbean, we've all heard of all-inclusive resorts where endless margaritas and piña coladas flow, paired with heapings of hearty buffet food. Maybe we've even attended a destination wedding or two and sought to visit the flamingos of Aruba or the pigs of the Bahamas . However, for a truly enchanting and tranquil Caribbean experience, there's nothing quite like this clear-water kayak tour in Turks and Caicos.

A picture of paradise, Turks and Caicos is a destination everyone should endeavor to visit at least once . While exploring the archipelago, tourists are missing out if they don't book the Kayak Eco Tour. With a perfect rating on Tripadvisor (a sweet five stars across more than 200 reviews), it's safe to say you can expect a stellar experience. Getting such a high rating in today's world, where anonymous criticizing seems a popular pastime, is quite a rarity. So, what is it about this particular tour that makes people love it so much? Is it the location? The service? The wildlife seen in the pristine Atlantic waters? Turns out, it's a little bit of everything.

Read more: Under-The-Radar Beaches You Need To Visit In The Caribbean

What To Expect On The Kayak Eco Tour

The Kayak Eco Tour lasts about four hours, and a complimentary shuttle service is included in the ticket, picking up guests from major resorts in Grace Bay. Once you arrive at the starting point, you'll meet with your guide, who will provide an all-important life jacket before you go off to paddle your way through the tremendously turquoise Caribbean. There is no hyperbole there, by the way: the Turks and Caicos archipelago has some of the most picture-perfect waters in the world.

If paddling on a kayak sounds stressful, have no fear. The tour explicitly states that no paddle-boarding experience is necessary to sign up, and your guide will help you weave your way through the waters. You'll be venturing primarily through mangroves, and you can expect to see a lot of wildlife on this tour. Your guide will help you identify different species of birds, sharks, iguanas, rays, and, if you're lucky, even some baby turtles.

Tours are subject to change based on weather conditions and can only depart during high tides, so starting times are flexible. If the weather is particularly inclement, the tour doesn't run. At the time of writing, the Kayak Eco Tour costs $296 per person and includes light snacks, your life jacket, a guide, bottled water, and national park fees. Note that you should have some cash on you for gratuity, provided the tour meets (or exceeds) your expectations.

Other Adventures In Turks And Caicos

While the Kayak Eco Tour is enough of a reason to visit Turks and Caicos, you'd be missing out if you limited yourself to just that. The archipelago is home to a plethora of picturesque beaches, exciting activities, and, in proper Caribbean form, delicious food and drink. For the best beaches, you'll want to head to Grace Bay Beach, Leeward Beach, or Long Bay Beach. Each offers those idyllic white sand and blue water images we all dream of before visiting the Caribbean.

While many may associate visiting any Caribbean island as a relaxing, kick-back vacation, adrenaline junkies will be pleased to know they're in for a real treat in Turks and Caicos. Brave travelers can soar high above the sky by parasailing over Grace Bay Beach or dive deep into the waters when scuba diving, where you'll have a good chance at seeing magnificent wildlife like turtles, eagle rays, and maybe even a few lobsters.

Caribbean food flies far under the radar, and Turks and Caicos are no exception. Here, try Johnny cakes, boiled fish and grits, crab and rice, conch fritters, and locally made Peppajoy hot sauce for the ultimate kick. Naturally, it should all be washed down with a local Turk's Head beer, best enjoyed after a tour of the brewery.
