If you're short on time, consider this three-hour tour that hits multiple of Venice's top attractions. You'll enjoy skip-the-line access to St. Mark's Basilica , as well as a two-hour walking tour (capped at 20 participants) passing sights like Doge's Palace , St. Mark's Square , the Bridge of Sighs , the Rialto Bridge and more. The final leg of your tour is reserved for exploring Venice's world-famous waterways on a one-hour boat ride down the Grand Canal . This is a great way to see much of Venice in just one day, according to tourgoers. Travelers also say it's a great value.

Tours run Monday to Saturday around 2:30 p.m. Note: Your shoulders, stomachs and knees must be covered to enter St. Mark's Basilica; large bags are prohibited inside as well. Ideal for families with kids ages 7 to 18, this tour explores Doge's Palace. Guides lead families through some of the hidden corridors and secret passages not open to the general public as they share stories about the building's history. Also on the agenda is the attic prison, the former torture chamber and the armory, among other spots. Reviewers say their kids love the tour and recommend it to other families.

Kids must be at least 6 years old to tour; the company does not recommend the tour for pregnant women, or for those who have mobility problems or are claustrophobic. Trips depart in the morning only and are limited to five people. Venice Kids Tours offers other family-focused activities, such as scavenger hunts, walking tours and boat tours.

City Wonders – Murano & Burano Islands Small Group Tour by Private Boat

Explore two of Venice's most beautiful islands on this outing. You'll first journey to Murano by boat to see a glassmaking demonstration followed by time to shop and explore on your own. You'll then cruise to Burano, where you'll observe Italian women crafting lace by hand, visit a lace museum and stroll around the island. Walks of Italy – Exclusive Alone in St. Mark's Basilica After Hours

Price: Adults from $90; kids from $86 Duration: 1.5 hours

This special tour treats you to an inside look at St. Mark's Basilica after it closes its doors to the general public. Guides lead no more than 25 tourgoers inside the basilica, sharing stories of its history as you explore. In addition, you'll visit the crypt, which is not open to the public during normal visiting hours. The crypt is said to house St. Mark's remains, as well as the Pala d'Oro altarpiece, which is adorned with nearly 2,000 gems. Tour-takers say after-hours is a wonderful time to see the cathedral and that guides are passionate and informed.

Tour times depend on the day, but generally depart between 7 and 9:45 p.m. several times a week. The company also offers a secret passages tour of the Doge's Palace, gondola rides and food tours, among other options.

Raphael Tours & Events – Rialto Food Tour in Venice

Price: From $103 Duration: 4 hours

On this tour, you'll explore Rialto by way of your taste buds as your guide takes you to pastry shops, wine bars, restaurants and markets. Along the way, you'll sample meats, cheeses, wines (including sparkling), polenta, olives and more. Travelers say the tour is wonderful and offers plenty to eat. During the tour, you'll eat seven cicchetti dishes (think: polenta, seafood and vegetables), drink five glasses of wine and indulge in one dessert. Though you may pass by some big sights like St. Mark's Square, you'll mostly visit less-touristy spots in the Rialto area of the city. Plus, you'll get to ride in a gondola. Travelers praise the tour guides and compliment the food and wine chosen.

Tours are typically offered Monday through Saturday at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. While this is the company's sole Venice tour, you can tour with Intrepid Urban Adventures in Florence and Rome , too.

Venice Kayak – Premium Day Kayak Tour

Kayak your way through the Venetian lagoon on this trip. You'll immerse yourself in a new perspective as you paddle through canals. The company recommends you have a bit of paddling experience. UNESCO Jewels: Best of Italy - Rome, Florence, Venice in 5 days

We had a blast! We had the tour organized by Fantasia by Carrani tour. It was great! Clara was an amazing guide. She explained everything and was a fun guide. She knew a lot about all the sites that we visited. She also gave us tips on where to go during our free time, which was amazing. It was a nice experience for first time travellers to Italy. The meals can be improved, but they were not our main concern. The hotels that were booked were pretty great and in safe areas that were close to the city centres and close to transportation. I highly recommend booking this tour if it is your first time in Europe.

Absolutely loved the trip and can't wait to do more. Our wonderful guide gave us lot of options to push ourselves and/or enjoy the scenery. We had a large group (which was a plus) and varying skill levels, but had a great encouraging environment to go at our own pace.

The tour itself was amazing! A lot of value for money. The tour guide did seem to be a bit annoyed at us at the end when we wanted to get transport back to the hotel, after walking over half a marathon. This is notable considering a few members had lower body injuries/ health concerns. Other than that, I really loved my trip. I made friends for life, memories I’ll cherish for years

Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo has a strategical position, in fact, it is equidistant from Rialto – the economic center of Venice –, and from Saint Mark, the political heart of the Republic.

During the years, Palazzo Contarini was subject to numerous changes and renovations and During the late fifteenth century, the graceful spiral staircase known as “Bovolo” (Venetian word that means “snail”) was added to the Palace, with its Reinassance taste.

The twenty-eight-meter high cylindrical tower containing the spiral six floors staircase is chromatically characterized by the alternation of red Cotto bricks and white Istria stone.

Traces of the older Gothic architecture are still visible both on the outside and the inside of the edifice. In fact, on the side facing Saint Mark, there are visible portions of lavish floral decoration, while the main façade still preserves the pristine late-Gothic appearance.

• The ticket is valid for a visit of 30 minutes on the day and time chosen and indicated on the voucher
• To use a reduced student ticket – students must show their valid student ID card with their ticket
• Children (age 0-11) admitted free and must be accompanied by an adult. Each adult can accompany up to 2 children under 12 years

In case of cancellation and NO-SHOW (i.e. no show at the time and place indicated for boarding) there is no refund.

A 20% penalty will be withheld for cancellations up to 72 hours before the experience. A 50% penalty will be withheld for cancellations up to 24 hours before the experience.

With a minimum of 24 hours notice the date of use of the ticket can be postponed to another date.

In case of bad weather or exceptions that do not allow the tour, the experience will be postponed or refunded 100% at the discretion of the user.

*From 01/04/2024 departures from P. Roma and S. Marco will be brought forward by 15 min . The duration of stops on the islands, return times to the point of departure remain unchanged. It`s just a technical solution that will allow us to better manage the important influxes.

This tour is longer than the average ! The 6 hours and 30 minutes gives you the opportunity to enjoy a good lunch in Burano Island or to spend time to an in-depth visit of the island. The 1.5 hour break in Murano gives you the opportunity to enjoy a glass demonstration and discover the island with a relaxed walk.

The meeting points for the full-day tour of Murano, Burano and Torcello:

• Piazzale Roma, Fondamenta Santa Lucia
• Riva degli Schiavoni – at Cornoldi Palace . Recognizing it is easy: from St. Mark’s Square, leave the Doge Palace on your left and walk along the splendid Riva degli Schiavoni, with its breathtaking view of the St. Mark Basin. From here you will have to walk about 500 meters crossing four bridge (after San Zaccaria pietà waterbus spot). 

What to see in Murano, Burano and Torcello

Island by island, let’s see in detail what to see in Murano, Burano and Torcello.

Murano Island

Murano known as the capital of glass , has seen here arise one of the oldest known glass districts. There are traces of its existence from the XIII century , when the Serenissima decided to move the glass production on the island to avoid the danger of fires in Venice. During a visit to Murano it is therefore ideal to enter the glass furnaces and see the master glassmakers at work .

During the tour you will witness a demonstration of Murano glass blowing and you will discover all the peculiarities of this unique art product in the world. Leaving the furnace, we suggest you reach the center of the island and the beautiful Basilica of Saints Mary and Donato. In your walk it is likely that you will also cross the romantic Streetlights in Love , a mecca of lovers of the island.

Burano Island

Burano is instead known for its colored houses and exceptional lace . Burano lace was once a commodity worthy of kings and today it is nearly no longer produced because of the out-of-scale costs. However, you will find some lace makers working at lace making in some point of sale on the island, or just sitting outside of their home. It is certainly worthwhile to deepen the history of Burano lace by visiting the Lace Museum .

Thanks to the two-hour stop in Burano you will be able to immerse yourself in its rainbow of colors with no rush. A point of interest for the visit is also the Church of San Martino , where the relics of Santa Barbara are kept.

Torcello Island

Finally, Torcello , the oldest of the Venetian settlements and the ancient fulcrum of Venetian “civilization” in the lagoon, before the rise of Venice. In Torcello, a small green island inhabited by only 12 people, it is worth visiting the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, built in the XII century, with its splendid Byzantine mosaics. Not far away are the Church of Santa Fosca and the legendary Throne of Attila.

You can choose between meat menu, fish menu, vegetarian menu. You’ll find everything ready when arriving there so you can optimize your time and have free time in Burano, without sacrificing yourself with a sandwich or packed lunch.

Tell us something about the origin of your name

Hello, i’m the Gondola (although in the Venice dialect they call me “gondoea”), I cannot tell you precisely where my name derives from, it would seem from the Latin “cuncula” (seashell), but there is also the hypothesis that it is a mixture between swinging “dondolare” and the medieval Greek word “kondura” (short rope boat); in fact my forefathers had the stern less slender than we have today gondolas.

Where and how are you built?

My birthplace is the “squero”, a construction site for small wooden boats. I come from the expert hands of the carpenters. The squero owes its name to the ruler, a work tool that in Venetian dialect is called “squara”. Once the squero was the place where all sorts of boats were repaired, but over time its activity was limited due to the construction of the Arsenale, where a large part of Venetian ships were built.

Where do your shape come from?

Over the centuries gondolas have changed appearance, in fact if you look at the paintings of the XV-XVI century, you will find that my ancestors were shorter and were not at all asymmetrical. On the other hand current gondola like me bend all on one side because the left side is wider than my right side by 24 centimeters. We have a flat bottom, but we are slender, in fact we are 11 meters long and weight 375kg on average. Despite this weight only one man can carry me with relative ease, sailing with only one oar and, also for this reason, I represent a unique exception in the world of boats!

First of all, what it is a bacaro ? To define it simply as a tavern would be somewhat reductive. A bacaro is a typical Venetian tavern , small in size, characterised by simple and rustic furniture, mainly made of wood, where you can enjoy glasses of wine , ombre in Venetian, or of spritz, accompanied by typical Venetian cicheti , that are small snacks of food ranging from fish balls to small stuffed sandwiches.

All cicheti are usually displayed in a glass case near the bar. But what certainly characterises a typical Venetian bacaro is the cosy and familiar atmosphere, the friendliness of the host and the presence of many Venetians that are taking a relaxing break.

The Bacaro Tour: what do you eat and drink in a bacaro?

Going from bacaro to bacaro certainly means drinking good wine and tasting real delicacies. As it is well known, Veneto is one of the best known Italian regions for the production of its fine wines, and for this reason in Venice you can certainly find excellent wines, even in the bacari , where they usually serve cheaper wines but still DOC (controlled designation of origin) wines. Among the red wines you can find Raboso, Cabernet, Merlot and Bardolino, whereas among the white wines Prosecco, Malvasia, Ribolla Gialla, Soave and Traminer. It is also possible to taste the authentic spritz , a typical Venetian aperitif, made with Prosecco, Aperol or Campari (or both in the case of the spritz misto, mixed), sparkling water or Seltz, a slice of orange and to put the finishing touches the olive. 

Concerning the cicheti , each bacaro offers its own options, so at each stage of your tour you can taste different specialities of the Venetian cuisine , but among the most common ones you can find the sarde in saor (fried fresh sardine fillets marinated in softly cooked white onions), baccalà mantecato (whipped salted cod served on slices of bread or polenta), meatballs, mozzarelle in carrozza (fried mozzarella cheese sandwiches), fried fish, tramezzini  (triangular Italian sandwich constructed from two slices of soft white bread, with the crusts removed) and sandwiches stuffed with cured meats.  

The Bacaro tour: what it is and where you can do it

The Bacaro Tour is the custom of going from bacaro to bacaro , around the sestieri  (districts) of Venice , to enjoy a few glasses of wine or spritz with your friends. Instead of sitting at the same bar for a long time, Venetians prefer performing this itinerant ritual. There is no exact time to go on a bacaro tour, but lunchtime and aperitif time are certainly the two most popular moments of the day. Tourists usually eat a real meal in the bacari , ordering trays of cicheti , but by doing so they miss the true essence of the bacaro tour. 

For those arriving by train at the Santa Lucia station, the first area from where they can begin their tour is the sestiere (district) of Cannaregio , in particular along the Fondamenta   (a street parallel to a canal) dei Ormesini, an area full of bacari . For those arriving instead by car or by bus, you cannot miss the Santa Croce district , an area with well-known bacari, frequented also by young people, especially university students. Another must-go area during your bacaro tour is the sestiere that includes the famous Campo  (square) Santa Margherita, that is Dorsoduro . A final district that deserves to be mentioned is the Castello district , the least tourist area in Venice and therefore full of bacari frequented by locals.

As previously mentioned, the bacaro tour is not expensive at all, the price of a glass of wine ranges from 0.60 cents to 2 euros maximum, while the price of a  cicheto  ranges from 1 to 3 euros . Those who have not yet had the chance to visit Venice will certainly not miss the opportunity to go on a bacaro tour on their first visit, and for those who have already visited it this will certainly be an opportunity to experience the city in a new way.
