There’s something of an art to making your home feel like home to everyone that walks in the door. The decor helps, be it cosy or cultured; and the kettle boiling on the stove. Then, of course, there’s the greeting – and where could possibly do it better than the land of 100,000 welcomes?

The people of Ireland love to open their doors to visitors. So, whether your taste is more country pile, such as Larchmount House in   County Londonderry ;  a traditional thatched cottage such as The Thatched Cottage B&B in County Galway;  an award-winning townhouse such as the Merchant's House in Derry~Londonderry; or one of the beach-front retreats from At The Beach Rooms , there’s a warm bed and a hot cup of tea here waiting for you.

B&Bs around the island of Ireland

L-R: The Merchant's House, Derry~Londonderry; Rosehill House, County Tyrone; Number 31 Guesthouse, Dublin; At The Beach, Portstewart, County Londonderry

The beauty of a B&B or guesthouse is that one can pop up anywhere. So, no matter how rural or central a holiday you’re planning, you’re guaranteed to find one in the right spot.

For rural retreats, it’s hard to beat somewhere like Coolanowle House , set on an organic farm in County Laois ,  their fresh farm produce such as milk, free range eggs and apple juice is available to purchase onsite;   Bayview Farm Cottages in County Antrim,  where cows lounge lazily on the golden beach nearby; or County Waterford's  Glasha House , voted 2020 B&B of the Year.

Meanwhile, in more urban settings, B&Bs and guesthouses promise the personal touch that most hotels can only dream of. Stunning St Jude’s in Galway city prides itself on its local, organic food; Victorian Maryville House in Belfast  tempts the tastebuds with its indulgent afternoon tea. While historic McGettigan’s Townhouse in Dublin  city centre feels lavish and exclusive. And in Kinsale in West Cork,   Perryville’s pretty pink façade welcomes everyone to the town – whether they’re staying or not!

Riverside House, County Mayo

Riverside House, County Mayo

Perhaps the best part about staying at a B&B is the in-house expert: an owner who lives in the area will know exactly what to recommend to guarantee you get the most out of your stay.

So, in Taobh Coille , Agnes and John will arrange a local fishing trip for you; or at Mount Royd , Josephine can set up a visit to neighbouring Dunmore House , beloved holiday retreat of crime writer, Agatha Christie.

It’s little wonder so many visitors return to the same B&Bs year in, year out: when it feels like you’re staying with friends, why go anywhere else?

And one final tip: if you want to have a relaxing, stress free trip, pay a visit to B&B Ireland . With over 700 unique B&Bs across the island, you can pick your favourite destination, and book it in advance for maximum convenience.

You're very wonderful people and we look forward to being with you again in the not too distant future. We'll be telling our friends where to stay in Cong!

What a glorious time we had in Cong. The beauty of your town and country will not be forgotten. We truly enjoyed the B&B. Since our return, we have found that so many have seen the movie and the enthusiasm they have when we mention that we've been to the cottage, "tossed" on the bed and stayed in Michaeleen's Manor. We certainly have enjoyed sharing our experience.

Your Guide to the Irish B&B

Bed and Breafkast Sign Ard Na Greine Bed and Breakfast Co. Tipperary

Finding and Booking a B&B

You will not find any shortage of bed and breakfasts in Ireland. Rarely will you even have a problem showing up in a town and finding a room for that night. However, it is always recommended to book your first and last night’s stay. Double-check ahead that you won’t be arriving on a holiday or during festival, which may make accommodation scarce in some areas.

If you are a planner (like us) and want to make reservations ahead, you have many booking options available online. Most bed and breakfasts have an electronic reservation system on their website or an e-mail address to send an inquiry directly to the owner. A simple Google search for “bed and breakfast” and the name of town will usually give you a variety of initial places to begin your investigation. The websites below are quite helpful too.

www.tripadvisor.com

www.discoverireland.ie

www.bandbireland.com

I usually don’t book a B&B unless it has several pictures of the rooms and common areas on their website or favorable reviews on trip advisor. While I have never had a terrible Bed and Breakfast experience, some bad places exist. However with just a little time into research you shouldn’t need to worry.

Depending on how long you stay, you can often receive discounts for reservations for more than two or three nights. Also, don’t forget to ask for the lowest rate available. Sometimes if you speak to the owner, they might be willing to lower their costs to fill a bed if it would otherwise go unused. Room prices are listed per person. If you are traveling as a couple, you will need to double the cost listed. If you are traveling solo, you may need to pay a single supplement fee (up to half the cost of another person) in addition to the per person rate.

Confirm your reservation at least a week before you leave for your trip. The best way is to send a note by e-mail confirming the date(s) of your stay and the approximate time of arrival. Also ask for directions if they are not already listed on the website. Printing and placing this information in a binder for each B&B before you leave is very helpful in keeping organized while on your trip.

Checking-in

Check-in is often between 3:00 and 6:00 PM unless otherwise noted on their website or pre-arranged. If however, you are unable to arrive at that time be sure to call ahead and let the bed and breakfast know. It would be inappropriate to make them wait for an extended period of time (and you might find yourself out of a room if you check-in really late). An Irish bed and breakfast is much different from an American hotel. The owner often runs show and is simply opening up their home to you. They may need to run errands or move about their daily work. Be kind and courteous.

Bed and Towels Ireland Bed and Breakfast Accommodations

After Arrival

After checking-in, you will receive a room key as well as a front door key. After 9 or 10 o’clock, the front door is usually locked for the safety of the family and guests. You are free to go in and out as you please. But similar to any hotel-like situation, if you are coming in from a late night on the town be respectful of others who are perhaps already asleep nearby.

Your host will often ask you when you would like breakfast the next morning. Some will even have a menu for you to select breakfast options. If for no other reason (although there are many), a full Irish breakfast is a fantastic and delicious reason to stay at a bed and breakfast in Ireland. You will want to mention any dietary restrictions you have at this time. Most owners will be as accommodating as possible.

While credit is becoming more widely accepted, some bed and breakfasts accept cash only. Credit card companies charge owners per transaction. Many smaller B&B choose not to offer this service, so check with your host upon arrival or be ready to have cash available on the day of your departure.

In Ireland, you do not need to tip the bed and breakfast staff. All services and fees are built into the cost of your room. Again, most often it will be your host providing the usual maintenance. If you feel they have gone above and beyond the requirements, a small monetary contribution may be appreciated, but it is not expected.

Friends made over breakfast

Other Helpful Tips

The Irish are notoriously chatty and your bed and breakfast hosts will no doubt be some of the most gregarious of the bunch. Use this to your advantage and ask for recommendations for sites to visit, places to eat or off the beaten track treasures. They will usually be a font of information and give you tips the guidebooks are sure not to have. It is also a great idea to talk to other travelers around the breakfast table. People from all walks of life, countries and travel itineraries will give you a variety of things to discuss.

In some places, your hot water heater may need turned on by your host. It is always turned on in the morning and at night, but if you are coming in after a hike and need to shower midday you may want to ask before jumping in.

Many bed and breakfasts have family pets that are in the home. If you are allergic, it may be best to ask about where Spot is allowed in the home. This is not usually an issue as pets are almost always sequestered in another part of the house, but it might warrant consideration for the highly allergic.

Almost all European rooms are smaller than the US standard. It is always good to remember this when you don’t have a desk or that extra chair in the room. Again, take a look at the pictures provided on the website. It should give you a good idea of the room size and its amenities.

Hopefully we can add to the conventional experience when it comes to providing a true Irish B and B, after all that why people come to Ireland

Thanks so much for the compliments. We love staying at Irish B & B’s and the chattyness is the part! So many of Ireland’s hidden gems would have stayed hidden from us if it wasn’t for our amazing hosts. You are right though–the B & B is absolutely a part of the Ireland experience.

Check-in - Ireland Bed and Breakfast

Ireland Bed and Breakfast vacation

Staying in an Ireland Bed and Breakfast offers travelers the complete flexibility of creating their own itinerary. You must select your accommodations ahead of time . To ensure the best availability, it's recommended that you pre-book your B&Bs as far in advance as possible. Enjoy your choice of accommodations from small towns to quaint villages to countryside manors.

All Irish B&B's pride themselves on providing their guests with a fresh, home-cooked breakfast each morning and quality accommodations that cater to every need. Draw on the local knowledge, personal touch and warm welcome of your Irish hosts. Learn about all the best local restaurants, pubs, shops, attractions and activities. Your hosts specialize in the best services available from golf to walking tours of the area, to adventure breaks and much more.

Why Stay in a B&B?

  • Most bed and breakfasts are owned by the B&B operators themselves, who usually live on the premises. It's natural to expect that B&B operators who live in their own B&B's will bring a different perspective to the job.
  • At B&B's, "customers" are truly guests, and it shows. The B&B owners will gladly help you find the best restaurant in town, the best pubs, point you to the best tourist attractions and local amenities and much much more. Many B&B's depend on word-of-mouth recommendations.

Combine those two factors and it's easy to see why B&B owners go out of their way to make sure your stay provides some great memories of Ireland.

What is a bed and breakfast?

A bed and breakfast means a comfy place to sleep and a meal to rise to in the morning. In other words, these much-loved vacation accommodation types promise to do exactly what their name implies. Of course, many go above and beyond that, with a heart-warming local welcome, pet-friendly policies, enchanting locations, personalized rooms, and more.

Why should I stay at a bed and breakfast?

The magic of a bed and breakfast really rests in its character. If you're the sort who prizes a local welcome, a home-like vibe, and personalized service, these are surely the stays for you. Country bed-and-breakfast hotels can also be a romantic choice, with quiet, secluded locations. And it's not uncommon to have B&Bs suited to pet owners who have their 4-legged friends in tow.

Where do you find bed and breakfasts?

Bed and breakfasts are all over. From characterful Cajun establishments in New Orleans to rustic Appalachian lodges in the Virginia forests , lakeside Michigan retreats to places all across the UK, Ireland , and beyond, there's always likely to be something of this sort in the offing. Remember that bed and breakfasts don't end with city limits, either – sometimes country B&Bs are the most enchanting of all.

How much does it cost to stay in a bed and breakfast?

Are bed and breakfasts cheaper than other accommodation types? That entirely depends. On the whole, B&B stays tend to be easier on the wallet than a classic hotel. However, their offering of bespoke services, along with the occasional frill – that private pool in the garden, those home-cooked meals by evening – can raise rates.

How do I book a bed and breakfast?

You can book that bed and breakfast in precisely the same way you'd go about booking a hotel or a vacation rental . Just type in your travel dates on Expedia and then sort your results using the property type check box. You'll soon be scrolling through the top-rated B&Bs in any given place. Or, use the wizard on this page. It's also worth remembering that bundling flights, accommodation, and car rental can save on the total price.

What do bed and breakfasts offer?

This sort of accommodation works hard to get the basics of the stay spot-on. That means a comfy place to rest your head – whether that is an air bed or something more conventional – along with hearty and filling food in the morning: think sizzling eggs and bacon in England, stacks of American pancakes in North Carolina , or local sausages and black pudding in Ireland. On top of that, you can expect perks like pet-friendly room options, communal lounge spaces, and sometimes even big gardens outside.

What’s the difference between a bed and breakfast and a hotel?

When it comes down to it, B&Bs are basically small-scale hotels. However, there are often other features that set them apart from conventional establishments, whether it's a homecooked morning meal laden with local ingredients, or a fully-fledged winery waiting in the garden. You can also expect just a handful of rooms and more personal service in these sorts of stays.

Are there bed and breakfasts close to me?

Pining for that local escape to the country? A romantic pad for 2 and the dog? A welcoming small-scale hotel that promises hearty eating come morning? Search for a bed and breakfast nearby and Expedia will showcase the top-rated stays of this sort in your vicinity. You can even use the map tool, to reveal B&Bs in areas and neighborhoods you might not have even considered exploring. Type in your location above and start the journey.

Introduction

When it comes to finding a unique and cozy place to stay during your travels, a bed and breakfast accommodation (B&B) is often the perfect choice. Unlike traditional hotels, bed and breakfast establishments offer a more intimate and personalized experience, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the local culture and charm.

Originating in the United Kingdom in the 18th century, bed and breakfast accommodations were initially private homes that offered a room for travelers to rest and enjoy a morning meal before continuing their journey. Today, B&Bs have evolved into welcoming establishments found all over the world, offering comfortable lodging and homemade breakfast in a home-like setting.

What sets bed and breakfast accommodations apart from hotels is their distinctive ambiance and character. From the moment you step through the door, you’ll be greeted by a warm and inviting atmosphere that often reflects the personality and style of the B&B’s owners. Each room is individually decorated with attention to detail, creating a unique and personalized space for guests to relax and unwind.

In addition to their charming interiors, bed and breakfast accommodations are typically located in picturesque and desirable locations. Whether nestled in the countryside, nestled in a quaint coastal town, or situated in the heart of a vibrant city, B&Bs often offer stunning views and easy access to local attractions, making them an ideal choice for travelers seeking an authentic and immersive experience.

While the specific amenities and services provided may vary from one B&B to another, guests can expect a range of comforts and conveniences to enhance their stay. From luxurious linens and cozy sitting areas to complimentary Wi-Fi and delicious homemade breakfasts, bed and breakfast accommodations strive to create a home-away-from-home atmosphere that caters to the needs and preferences of their guests.

Whether you’re a solo traveler seeking a tranquil retreat or a couple looking for a romantic getaway, staying at a bed and breakfast accommodation offers numerous benefits. In the following sections, we will delve deeper into the features, amenities, and services provided by B&Bs, as well as the key differences between B&Bs and hotels. We will also offer tips on how to choose the perfect bed and breakfast accommodation for your next adventure.

Definition of Bed and Breakfast Accommodation

A bed and breakfast accommodation, often referred to as a B&B, is a type of lodging establishment that offers overnight accommodations and a homemade breakfast to guests. Unlike traditional hotels or motels, B&Bs are typically smaller and more intimate, providing a more personal and unique experience for travelers.

At its core, a bed and breakfast accommodation is a private residence that has been converted into a lodging establishment. The owners of the property, known as innkeepers or hosts, open their home to guests and provide them with comfortable rooms and a warm and welcoming environment.

One of the defining features of a bed and breakfast accommodation is the inclusion of breakfast in the room rate. Unlike hotels, where breakfast is often an additional charge or limited to a continental buffet, B&Bs take pride in offering homemade, freshly prepared meals for their guests. These breakfasts are typically served in a communal dining area, allowing guests to socialize and interact with one another while enjoying their meal.

Another characteristic of a bed and breakfast accommodation is the attention to detail and personalized service. B&B owners often go above and beyond to ensure a memorable stay for their guests. From providing insider tips on local attractions and restaurants to offering personalized recommendations based on individual preferences, innkeepers strive to create a personalized experience that caters to the unique needs and interests of each guest.

Bed and breakfast accommodations can be found in a variety of settings. Some are located in historic homes or mansions, while others may be situated in charming cottages or converted farmhouses. The architecture and decor of each B&B are often in harmony with the local surroundings, creating a cohesive and authentic experience for guests.

It’s important to note that while breakfast is a prominent feature of a bed and breakfast accommodation, they often do not offer full-service dining options. Guests are typically encouraged to explore the local restaurant scene or nearby attractions for lunch and dinner. This allows travelers to fully immerse themselves in the local culture and cuisine.

In the next section, we will explore the fascinating history of bed and breakfast accommodations and how they have evolved over the years into the beloved lodging establishments we know today.

History of Bed and Breakfast Accommodation

The history of bed and breakfast accommodations traces back to the 18th century in the United Kingdom, where they originated as humble inns along coach routes. Travelers would stop at these inns to rest, refresh, and have a hearty home-cooked meal before continuing their journey.

During this time, many private homes offered travelers a room for the night and a warm breakfast in the morning. These homes provided a more personal and comfortable alternative to the often crowded and impersonal inns. The establishment of these early bed and breakfast accommodations laid the foundation for the concept we know today.

As travel became more common and convenient in the 19th century, the demand for bed and breakfast accommodations grew. Many families realized the potential to earn extra income by accommodating travelers in their homes. This led to the expansion of bed and breakfast establishments as a recognized form of lodging.

The concept of bed and breakfast accommodations continued to evolve throughout the 20th century. In the United States, for example, the rise of the automobile and the development of highway systems allowed travelers to explore new destinations more easily. This led to the establishment of roadside bed and breakfast accommodations, providing weary travelers with a comfortable place to rest.

Over time, bed and breakfast accommodations transformed from simple stopovers to stylish and upscale establishments. Many historic homes, mansions, and stately properties were converted into luxurious B&Bs, offering guests a unique blend of comfort, charm, and history.

In recent years, bed and breakfast accommodations have experienced a resurgence in popularity. Travelers, seeking a more personalized and authentic experience, have turned to B&Bs as a preferred lodging choice. The rise of online platforms and booking websites has made it easier than ever for guests to discover and book bed and breakfast accommodations, further fueling their growth.

Today, bed and breakfast establishments can be found all around the world, catering to a variety of travelers. From urban B&Bs in bustling city centers to remote countryside retreats, there is a bed and breakfast accommodation to suit every preference and desired experience.

In the next section, we will explore the distinguishing features and amenities offered in bed and breakfast accommodations, further highlighting why they are such a popular choice among travelers.

These establishments offer a more intimate and personalized experience, creating a cozy and welcoming atmosphere for guests. Here are some of the key features that make bed and breakfast accommodations so special:

  • Charming and Individualized Rooms: Each room in a bed and breakfast accommodation is typically decorated with its own distinctive style and character. From antique furnishings to cozy fireplaces, the rooms exude a sense of warmth and comfort.
  • Homemade Breakfast: One of the highlights of staying at a bed and breakfast is the delicious homemade breakfast that is included in the room rate. Guests can expect a freshly prepared meal featuring local ingredients, served in a communal dining area where they can socialize with fellow travelers.
  • Personalized Service: Innkeepers or hosts at bed and breakfast accommodations often go above and beyond to ensure a pleasant stay for their guests. They provide personalized recommendations for local attractions, dining options, and activities based on individual preferences.
  • Cozy Common Areas: Bed and breakfast accommodations usually have inviting common areas where guests can relax and unwind. These spaces often feature comfortable seating, bookshelves stocked with reading material, and sometimes even board games or musical instruments.
  • Local Charm: Many bed and breakfast accommodations are situated in historic buildings or in picturesque locations such as quaint coastal towns, scenic countryside, or charming village squares. This allows guests to truly immerse themselves in the local charm and experience the destination from a unique perspective.
  • Personalized Amenities: B&Bs often provide personalized amenities and little touches to enhance the guest experience. This may include complimentary toiletries, fluffy bathrobes, fresh flowers in the rooms, or even homemade treats and beverages.
  • Attention to Detail: The owners of bed and breakfast accommodations take pride in their attention to detail, ensuring that every aspect of the guest’s stay is thoughtfully considered. From the quality of the linens to the cleanliness of the rooms, no detail is overlooked.

These are just a few of the features that make staying at a bed and breakfast accommodation a unique and memorable experience. In the next section, we will explore the amenities and services commonly provided in bed and breakfast establishments, further enhancing the guest experience.

Amenities and Services provided in Bed and Breakfast Accommodation

Bed and breakfast accommodations offer a range of amenities and services to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay for their guests. While the specific offerings may vary from one B&B to another, here are some common amenities and services provided in bed and breakfast establishments:

  • Comfortable Sleeping Accommodations: Bed and breakfast accommodations pride themselves on providing comfortable sleeping arrangements. Guests can expect cozy beds with high-quality linens and pillows, ensuring a restful night’s sleep.
  • Ensuite or Private Bathroom: Many B&Bs offer ensuite or private bathrooms for each guest room, providing convenience and privacy. These bathrooms may feature luxurious amenities such as bathrobes, slippers, and complimentary toiletries.
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi: Most bed and breakfast establishments provide complimentary Wi-Fi access to guests, allowing them to stay connected and easily plan their activities during their stay.
  • Homemade Breakfast: As mentioned earlier, a hallmark of a bed and breakfast accommodation is the delicious homemade breakfast included in the room rate. This breakfast is often made using fresh, locally sourced ingredients, and may include a variety of dishes such as eggs, pastries, fruit, and more.
  • Common Areas: Bed and breakfast accommodations typically have shared common areas where guests can relax and socialize. These spaces may include comfortable seating areas, reading nooks, fireplaces, and outdoor patios or gardens.
  • Concierge Services: Innkeepers or hosts at bed and breakfast accommodations are knowledgeable about the local area and can provide valuable assistance in planning activities, recommending restaurants, arranging transportation, and more.
  • Snacks and Beverages: Some B&Bs offer complimentary snacks and beverages throughout the day for guests to enjoy. This may include fresh fruit, baked goods, coffee, tea, and even evening wine or cheese tastings.
  • Guest Parking: Bed and breakfast accommodations often provide on-site or nearby parking options for guests, ensuring convenience and ease of access.
  • Additional Services: Depending on the B&B, additional services may be available, such as spa treatments, in-room massages, guided tours, or even cooking classes. These extras can further enhance the guest experience and create lasting memories.

These amenities and services combine to create a welcoming and enjoyable experience for guests of bed and breakfast accommodations. In the next section, we will explore the differences between bed and breakfast accommodations and traditional hotels, highlighting the unique advantages of staying at a B&B.

Differences between Bed and Breakfast Accommodation and Hotels

Bed and breakfast accommodations offer a distinctly different experience from traditional hotels. While both provide lodging for travelers, there are several key differences that set bed and breakfast establishments apart:

  • Size: Bed and breakfast accommodations are typically smaller in size compared to hotels. B&Bs often have a limited number of rooms, allowing for a more intimate and personalized experience.
  • Ambiance and Decor: B&Bs are known for their charming and unique decor. Each room is often individually decorated, reflecting the personality and style of the innkeepers. Hotels, on the other hand, tend to have a more standardized and uniform design.
  • Personalized Service: Innkeepers at bed and breakfast accommodations offer a high level of personalized service. They take the time to get to know their guests and provide recommendations tailored to their individual preferences. Hotels, while also offering service, may have a larger staff and more formalized procedures.
  • Breakfast: The inclusion of a homemade breakfast is a distinguishing feature of bed and breakfast accommodations. B&Bs provide a hearty and freshly prepared meal, often using local ingredients. In contrast, hotels may offer breakfast options, but they are typically more standardized and may be offered at an additional cost.
  • Common Areas: Bed and breakfast establishments often have inviting common areas where guests can relax and socialize. These spaces create a sense of community and allow for interactions with other guests. Hotels, while offering common areas, may be more focused on providing facilities such as a lobby, pool, or fitness center.
  • Location: B&Bs are frequently located in unique and picturesque settings. They may be situated in historic homes, in scenic countryside, or in charming coastal towns. Hotels, while also offering various locations, may be more centrally located or cater to specific travel needs, such as airport or downtown locations.
  • Atmosphere: Bed and breakfast accommodations are known for their warm and welcoming atmosphere. Guests are often made to feel like part of the family. Hotels, while providing service and comfort, may have a more formal and professional atmosphere.
  • Price: Bed and breakfast accommodations can offer excellent value for the personalized experience they provide. While prices may vary, B&Bs are often more affordable compared to hotels, especially for travelers seeking a unique and intimate stay.

These differences make bed and breakfast accommodations a popular choice for travelers looking for a more personalized and immersive experience. In the next section, we will highlight the benefits of staying in a bed and breakfast accommodation.

Tips for Choosing a Bed and Breakfast Accommodation

Choosing the right bed and breakfast accommodation can enhance your travel experience and make your stay truly memorable. Here are some helpful tips to consider when selecting the perfect B&B for your next adventure:

  • Research and Read Reviews: Take the time to research different bed and breakfast accommodations in your desired location. Read online reviews and ratings from past guests to get an idea of their experiences and the quality of the establishment.
  • Consider Location: Think about what you want to explore and experience during your trip. Choose a bed and breakfast that is conveniently located near the attractions, sights, and activities you’re interested in.
  • Check Room Availability: B&Bs typically have a limited number of rooms, so check the availability of the rooms that meet your requirements. If you’re looking for specific amenities or features, such as an ensuite bathroom or a fireplace, make sure the room you choose offers those.
  • Identify Your Preferences: Consider your personal preferences and priorities. Do you prefer a traditional Victorian-style B&B or a rustic countryside retreat? Do you want a more social atmosphere or prefer a quieter, more private experience? Identifying your preferences will help you narrow down your options.
  • Review Amenities and Services: Take a close look at the amenities and services offered by each bed and breakfast. Consider what is important to you, such as complimentary Wi-Fi, parking facilities, common areas, or specific dietary considerations for breakfast.
  • Communicate Your Needs: If you have any specific needs or requests, such as dietary restrictions or mobility concerns, reach out to the bed and breakfast accommodation in advance. Confirm that they can accommodate your requirements and make necessary arrangements.
  • Connect with the Innkeeper: Consider contacting the innkeeper or host before booking your stay. This allows you to ask any questions you may have, get a sense of their hospitality, and ensure that they align with your expectations and preferences.
  • Compare Rates and Policies: Compare the rates and booking policies of the different bed and breakfast accommodations you’re considering. Look for any additional fees or cancellation policies, and ensure that they align with your travel plans.
  • Trust your Instincts: Lastly, trust your instincts. If a bed and breakfast accommodation feels like the right fit based on your research, reviews, and communication, go with your gut feeling. Sometimes, the chemistry and connection you feel with the place can make all the difference in your stay.

By following these tips, you can choose a bed and breakfast accommodation that aligns with your preferences and ensures a delightful and unforgettable stay. In the concluding section, we will summarize the key points discussed and reiterate the unique appeal of bed and breakfast accommodations.

Enjoy accommodation in a private house, usually run by the owner. With lots of personalised touches, great service and a warm welcome, make the most of your host and ask for their insider tips on places to visit, things to do, and walks in the area.

Start the day with a traditional Scottish breakfast (haggis optional) or full continental, which will include cold meats, cheese, fresh fruit, and bakery items, and other dietary requirements. Some even serve evening meals. B&Bs and guest houses do not usually provide facilities for you to cook for yourself.

Many B&Bs and guest houses in Scotland offer extra facilities such as off-road parking,  pet-friendly  rooms, or handy storage for bikes or golf clubs.

Whilst both B&Bs and guest houses offer a bed for the night and breakfast the next morning, B&Bs will usually host no more than six guests at one time, offering a personal touch to your stay. Guest houses tend to be larger, with at least four bedrooms for guests.

What is a B-1/B-2 visa?

A B-1/B-2 visa is a non-immigrant , visa that allows foreign nationals to travel to the United States temporarily for business (B-1), tourism (B-2), or a mix of both (B1/B2). This visa category is widely used for brief visits to the U.S. B visas are typically valid for up to 10 years from the issue date, and travelers to the U.S. can stay up to 180 days, with the option to return to the U.S. again after that time.

Take our 5-minute quiz to check your eligibility.

How long does it take to get a B-1/B-2 visa?

As of December 2023, the average wait time (processing time) for most B1/B2 visa interview appointments is between 2 months (Brazil) to 2+ years (Canada). To check the wait time for your specific embassy or consulate, enter your city in this  handy State Department tool  under the section “Appointment Wait Time.” Note that if you are applying for an interview in a country other than your home country, wait times may be longer.

How long can you stay in the USA on a B-1/B-2 Visa?

A maximum of 6 months may be obtained for any B-1/B-2 entry, with the possibility for extensions within the U.S. in qualifying cases. The exact duration varies per visa holder, but you can typically stay in the U.S. for up to six months. The B1/B2 visa is a multiple-entry visa, which means you can use it to enter the U.S. more than once. There’s no set limit to the number of times you can visit the U.S. in a year, and it depends on the specific circumstances and discretion of the CBP officers who review your case each time you enter.

It’s important to remember that the B1/B2 visa is intended for temporary, occasional visits for business, tourism, or medical treatment. It’s not meant to be used for living long-term in the U.S. or spending the majority of your time in the country.

What’s the difference between a B1 visa and a B2 visa?

The B1 is used for short business trips (conferences, meetings, contract negotiations, etc). Those with B1 visas cannot work in the U.S. in the traditional sense, as of March 2023, B1 or B2 visa holders can apply for jobs in the U.S. and attend interviews.

The B2 (tourist visa) is for tourism, vacation, or visiting friends and family. It also covers certain medical treatments and participation in social events or contests, like music or sports, without receiving pay. In most cases, a B1/B2 visa is issued together, allowing the holder to travel for both business and pleasure.

How many times can you visit the U.S. with a B-1/B-2 Visa?

Depending on the context, the number of times you can visit the U.S. with a B visa varies. B1B2 visas are multiple-entry, meaning they can be used to enter the U.S. more than once. There’s no set limit to the number of times you can visit the U.S. in a year, and it depends on the specific circumstances and discretion of the CBP officers who review your case each time you enter.

If officers think you’re trying to live in the U.S. through frequent or extended visits, or if you’re not maintaining significant ties to your home country, they may suspect you’re misusing the visa, which could lead to denial of entry or future visa issues.

While there’s no official limit, it’s vital to respect the purpose and restrictions of your visa to avoid any problems. If you need guidance on your specific situation, it’s a good idea to consult with an immigration expert.

Currently, the government filing fee for a B visa is $185, which does not include the cost of gathering documents and evidence and acquiring passport photos.

Boundless has helped more than 100,000 people navigate the visa application process, and we’ll help you make a travel visa plan based on your unique situation. Get started today!

B visa requirements

A B1/B2 visitor visa is for many types of trips to the U.S., including business and non-business activities like tourism. If you want to apply for a B1 or B2 visa, you need to prove that your trip to the U.S. is only for a short time.

You must also show proof that you plan to return to your home country after your visit, and that you have a place to live outside the U.S. that you will not leave for good. These points help show that you will follow the rules of the B1/B2 visa.

Reasons for travel under a B1 visitor visa include:

  • Business consultations : This might include meetings, negotiations, or discussions with business associates in the U.S.
  • Attending conferences or seminars : This can cover professional, educational, scientific, or business conventions.
  • Settling an estate : If someone inherits property or assets in the U.S., a B1 visa can allow them to handle these matters legally.
  • Contract negotiations : If a person needs to sign or negotiate a contract with a U.S. company, a B1 visa is often the correct choice.
  • Professional examination and licensing : Some professionals must be in the U.S. to take exams or get licenses only available there.

Reasons for travel under a B2 tourist visa include:

  • Tourism : This could be sightseeing, visiting famous landmarks, exploring cities, or simply enjoying the country’s culture and atmosphere.
  • Visiting family or friends : Many people use a B2 visa to visit their loved ones living in the U.S.
  • Medical treatment : If someone requires medical treatment or a procedure that’s available in the U.S., they might apply for a B2 visa.
  • Social events : Attending events like concerts, cooking classes, conventions, festivals, or other social gatherings can be another reason for using a B2 visa.
  • Participation in events or contests : If the event doesn’t involve professional participation (like amateur tournaments or contests), a B2 visa could be suitable.
  • Short courses of study : If the course duration is less than 18 hours per week, this falls under B2 visa regulations.

You cannot travel under this visa to engage any of the following:

  • Long-term employment by a U.S. firm
  • Paid performances, or any professional performance before a paying audience
  • Arrival as a crewmember on a ship or aircraft
  • Work as foreign press, in radio, film, print journalism, or other information media
  • Permanent residence in the United States

Boundless has helped more than 100,000 people with their immigration and U.S. travel plans. We’ll be your partner from beginning to end. Get started today!

Boundless tip

The Visa Waiver Program allows nationals from certain countries to travel to the United States without a visa for business, tourism, or while in transit for up to 90 days. The program currently covers 38 countries and territories, including most countries in the European Union.

Canadian nationals also typically do not need a visa to enter the US for tourism purposes. Canadian nationals will need the appropriate visa if they have specific plans to study, work, or move permanently to the U.S.

Different entry requirements also apply to Canadian nationals, depending on whether they plan to work, study, invest, or immigrate. The maximum length of stay can vary, depending on circumstances, between 6 months and 1 year.

The B1 visa and B2 visa do not grant  permanent resident status  — they are temporary visas – but you can adjust your status from a B1/B2 visa to another type of visa while you are in the U.S., as long as you meet certain requirements. This process involves submitting a change of status application to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

Here are a few key points to consider:

Key points to consider if you want to change status from B1/B2

  • Purpose of stay : Your reason for wanting to stay in the U.S. should match the new visa type. For example, if you wish to study, you may apply to change to a student visa (F-1). If you find an employer willing to sponsor you, you could apply to change to a work visa (like H-1B).
  • Timing : You should apply before your current status expires, typically indicated on the I-94 Arrival/Departure Record. USCIS recommends applying at least 45 days before your current status expires.
  • Eligibility : Not everyone can change their status. For example, you cannot change your status if you entered the U.S. under the Visa Waiver Program unless it is due to marriage to a U.S. citizen.
  • Status violation : If you’ve violated the terms of your current status (for instance, if you’ve started working while on a B1/B2 visa without authorization), you usually can’t change your status.
  • Approval : Even if you meet all conditions and file an application, the final decision is up to USCIS.

If you’ve just married someone who’s a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident (they have a green card), you can also apply for a marriage green card. This lets you stay in the U.S. and live with your spouse. You can either apply for a green card while you’re still in the country in a process is called “adjustment of status” (AOS), or you can apply from your home country through what’s called consular processing. To find out if you’re eligible for a B1B2 visa or to change your status from a B1B2 visa, take our eligibility quiz. Get started today!

Documents needed to apply for a B1/B2 visa include:

  • A passport valid for six months past the date of return
  • A recent digital photograph that meets government requirements
  • Documentation of the past five previous trips to the United States, if applicable
  • Proof of funds to cover the entire cost of the trip, including travel, accommodation, and living expenses
  • Proof of binding ties to the applicant’s home country, such as a job, property, or family

B1/B2 visa application process

Applications are processed by the United States Embassy or consulate in your country.

You will need to attend an interview before your visa is approved. You can attend an interview at an embassy or consulate in a third country, but you will likely wait longer for a visa appointment.

Steps to getting a B Visa

  • First, you must complete the Online Non-Immigrant Application, Form DS-160. File the form online and print the confirmation page as you will need it for your interview.
  • Upload your digital photo
  • Attend the visa interview

As part of the process, ink-free, digital fingerprint scans are taken, typically at the interview. After the interview, the consular officer may request additional documents or information to make a decision about your case.

Boundless’ Travel Visa Service makes applying a breeze with online filing, 1:1 interview coaching, interview scheduling, and support if your visa is denied. Take our approval odds quiz to check your eligibility.

B-1 visas are issued for short business trips, while B-2 visas are issued for tourism purposes, such as vacations or visiting family.

If you’re looking to temporarily visit the U.S. for either holiday or work purposes, for example, attending a conference, touring a place or visiting relatives, then you can apply for a B-1/B-2 visa. You may need to show proof that you have ties to your home country, and that you plan on leaving the U.S..

When you enter the U.S., a customs officer will give you authorization to stay in the the country for up to six months . If you’d like to stay for longer, you may be able to apply to extend this for up to one year.

If you are nearing the end of your permitted stay in the U.S., then you may wish to extend it, especially since there can be future consequences if you stay in the U.S. longer than you were allowed to.

If you’re on a B-1 visa or a B-2 visa, you can request to extend your stay up to one year. To do this, you will need to file Form I-539 to extend or change your status. It’s recommended that you apply to extend your status at least 45 days before your authorized stay expires, so make sure you’re thinking ahead.

No. While you can enter the U.S. for business purposes, you cannot work or be employed by a U.S. employer. If you’re interested in working in the U.S. for a U.S. employer, you may be interested in other visa categories, such as the H-1B visa .

How can I renew my B1 visa or B2 visa?

If you would like to renew your B-1/B-2 visa, then you will need to go through the original process. Depending on the U.S. embassy or consulate where you apply, you may be able to complete your visa renewal without the need for an interview.

Should I apply for a B-1/B-2 visa or an ESTA?

If you are a citizen of one of the 38 countries that are part of the Visa Waiver Program , then you have the option of applying for an ESTA instead of a B1 visa or B2 visa.

Both allow you to enter the U.S. for the same reasons of tourism or business, but you can apply for the ESTA online. Entering the U.S. this way only permits you to stay for up to 90 days, however, so if you would like to stay in the U.S. for travel or business purposes for longer, the B-1/B-2 visitor visa may be an option for you.

Do Canadian citizens need a B-1/B-2 visa?

For casual business or tourism travel, most Canadian citizens don’t need a visa and will automatically be admitted on a B-1 visa or B-2 visa category.

Is the B-1/B-2 visa an immigrant or non-immigrant visa?

The B-1/B-2 visa is a non-immigrant visa, but if your circumstances change, for example, you marry a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, there are several paths from a visitor visa to a green card . Learn more to see how Boundless can help you avoid major headaches and make the process easier.

Do I need a certain amount of money in my bank account to be approved for a travel visa?

No. A common misconception about the travel visa process is that in order be approved, you must provide proof of a certain amount of funds in your bank account. Although financial considerations are one aspect of the B-1/B-2 process, and the consular officer may check to see if you are able to support yourself financially during your time in the U.S., there is no minimum required amount of funds that needs to be met. Evaluation of finances will vary from applicant to applicant, depending on a variety of other factors. Learn more common myths about the travel visa process in Boundless’ blog post .

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — As Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming opens for the busy summer season, wildlife advocates are leading a call for a boycott of the conservative ranching state over laws that give people wide leeway to kill gray wolves with little oversight.

The social media accounts of Wyoming’s tourism agency are being flooded with comments urging people to steer clear of the Cowboy State amid accusations that a man struck a wolf with a snowmobile, taped its mouth shut and showed off the injured animal at a Sublette County bar before killing it.

While critics contend that Wyoming has enabled such animal cruelty, a leader of the state’s stock growers association said it’s an isolated incident and unrelated to the state’s wolf management laws. The laws that have been in place for more than a decade are designed to prevent the predators from proliferating out of the mountainous Yellowstone region and into other areas where ranchers run cattle and sheep.

“This was an abusive action. None of us condone it. It never should never have been done,” said Jim Magagna, executive vice president of the Wyoming Stock Growers Association and a Sublette County rancher who has lost sheep to wolves. “It’s gotten a lot of media attention but it’s not exemplary of how we manage wolves to deal with livestock issues or anything.”

Wolves are federally protected as an endangered or threatened species in most of the U.S. but not the Northern Rockies. Wyoming, Idaho and Montana allow wolves to be hunted and trapped , after their numbers rebounded following their reintroduction to Yellowstone and central Idaho almost 30 years ago. Before their reintroduction, wolves had been annihilated in the lower 48 states through government-sponsored poisoning, trapping and bounty hunting into the mid-1900s.

Today, Wyoming has the least restrictive policies for killing wolves. There are limits on hunting and trapping in the northwestern corner of the state and killing them is prohibited in Yellowstone and neighboring Grand Teton National Park, where they are a major attraction for millions of tourists. But outside the Yellowstone region, in the 85% of the state known as the “predator zone,” they can be freely killed.

The wolf allegedly was run down, shown off and killed within the predator zone.

Wolves roam hundreds of miles and often kill cattle and sheep. Gray wolves attacked livestock hundreds of times in 2022 across 10 states including Wyoming, according to an Associated Press review of depredation data from state and federal agencies, the most recent data available. Other times livestock succumb to other predators, disease or exposure or simply go missing.

Losses to wolves can be devastating to individual ranchers, yet wolves’ industry-wide impact is negligible: The number of cattle killed or injured in documented cases equals 0.002% of herds in the affected states, according to a comparison of depredation data with state livestock inventories.

The predator zone resulted from negotiations between U.S. and Wyoming officials who traded away federal compensation for livestock killed by wolves in exchange for allowing free killing of wolves in that area.

Saharai Salazar is among out-of-staters changing their travel plans based on what allegedly happened Feb. 29 near Daniel, a western Wyoming town of about 150 people.

The Santa Rosa, California, dog trainer posted on the state’s tourism Instagram account that she would not get married in Wyoming next year as planned. The post was among hundreds of similar comments, many with a #boycottwyoming hashtag on social media in recent weeks.

“We have to change the legislation, rewrite the laws so we can offer more protection, so they can’t be interpreted in ways that will allow for such atrocities,” Salazar said in an interview.

Wyoming’s rules have long invited controversy but are unlikely to harm the overall population because most of the animals in the state live in the Yellowstone region, said wolf expert and former U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service wolf biologist Ed Bangs.

Bangs said the incident of the wolf brought into the bar was a “sideshow” to the species’ successful recovery. The predator zone is made up largely of open landscapes that generally don’t support wolves, he said.

Wyoming’s rules, including the predator zone, have withstood multiple court challenges that have put wolves on and off the endangered species list since they were first delisted in 2008. Wolves haven’t been on the list in the region since a 2017 court order and their current Wyoming population of more than 300 is similar to their number in 2010.

Though state law doesn’t specify how wolves in the predator zone can be killed and doesn’t specifically prohibit running them over, the Humane Society and others argue the state’s animal cruelty law applies in this case.

Widely circulating photos show the man posing with the wolf with its mouth bound. Video clips show the same animal lying on a floor, alive but barely moving.

The Sublette County Sheriff’s Office said it has been investigating the anonymous reports of the man’s actions but has struggled to get witnesses to come forward.

“We’ve had the tip line open for two weeks hoping for witnesses or something helpful,” sheriff’s spokesperson Sgt. Travis Bingham said. “I know there’s some hesitation for people to come forward.”

The only punishment for the man so far is having to pay a $250 ticket for illegal possession of wildlife.

The suspect has not commented publicly and did not answer calls to his business. Calls to the bar went unanswered.

Matthew Brown in Billings, Montana, contributed to this report.

Brits set to be hit by tourist tax in Tenerife from next year after protests on Spanish island

British tourists will have to contend with a new kind of tax being introduced in Tenerife on the back of mass protests about the number of visitors .

Visitors to the Spanish island will need to pay a currently undisclosed figure as part of plans to curb overtourism, reports the Sun .

Tens of thousands were involved in rallies last weekend that were seen on Tenerife and on other Canary islands of Lanzarote and Gran Canaria.

Protests also involved a hunger strike, wrote the Mail .

A spokesman for protest platform Canarias Se Agota told the media: “Today, April 20, marks the 10th day of the hunger strike.

“Today we cannot forget these people who are putting their lives at risk for our Earth.

“Their determination inspires, their bravery moves us, their sacrifice reminds us that this struggle is everyone's and for everyone.”

The new tax will come in on New Year’s Day 2025.

It is understood that it will not be applied to tourists upon accessing the island but instead the charge will be made for visits to natural spots and beauty sites.

This includes visits to the volcano Mount Teide and hamlets such as Masca while islanders will also be charged.

Rosa Dávila, the first female president of Tenerife, said: “We must analyse the exceptionalities that can be applied in a territory as fragile and limited as ours. What is clear is that Tenerife cannot be a theme park.

"Those who visit us have to value and respect our natural and cultural wealth, our resources, and they have to be clear about the rules for their preservation.

"In addition, there have to be limits to prevent tourism from overflowing."
