12 Best Things to do in Providence, Rhode Island

Tucked away on the northern Atlantic Coast, the capital of Rhode Island is a fascinating mix of history and college culture. Providence was founded by those who escaped Puritan Massachusetts, laying the groundwork for what has since become an eccentric city.

It found its way onto the proverbial map when Brown University opened in 1764, becoming one of the leading education institutions in the country. As the student population grew, Providence became a vibrant and diverse city best reflected by its art scene and theater scene. Besides exploring these things to do in Providence, visitors can also enjoy its breathtaking local architecture – an aspect of the city best discovered on foot.

12. Thayer Street

For a fun and lively atmosphere, day or night, wander down the popular Thayer Street. A top hangout for locals and college students, you’ll find plenty to do here, including making your way to each of the 70-plus unique stores and restaurants.

The main section of the bustling street lasts for six blocks and is teeming with retro stores and thrift shops, along with a wider variety of cuisine and cheap eats. Find everything you need to satisfy your cravings, from Greek to specialty desserts and chic cafes.

11. Providence Performing Arts Center

10. Providence Children’s Museum

If the young ones are getting restless from time spent exploring museums and universities, then take them along to the Providence Children’s Museum. The space opened in 1976 and in the years since has been at the forefront of inspiring young minds through interactive exhibits.

The museum is the only one of its kind on Rhode Island, and will stoke curiosity among all children who can explore the world we live in. Each hands-on exhibit focuses on a specific aspect of the human experience, including culture, arts, science, and technology. The exhibits take a wide range of approaches, so all learning styles are represented. Popular attractions include “Play Power” and “Water Ways”.

9. Stephen Hopkins House

Found on the iconic Benefit Street, the Stephen Hopkins House deserves its spot in the annals of U.S. history. It was here that the state’s governor, Stephen Hopkins, signed the Declaration of Independence that helped split the United States with Britain.

The home was built decades before this historic event, making it an attraction in itself. The beguiling building was built in 1707 and has been maintained in the centuries since and was even visited by George Washington on several occasions. Today, you can visit the home complete with period furnishing and intriguing artifacts befitting such an important home.

8. Benefit Street

Rising from the banks of the Providence River to the top of College Hill, Benefit Street is a historic stretch of road that unveils the past. It’s the perfect place to begin your travels to Providence or enjoy a morning stroll. Benefit Street is laden with gorgeous architecture that showcases each era in local life.

The cobblestone street has one of the largest assortments of Colonial buildings in the United States. You’ll find a collection of Federal-era homes preserved in a state of eternal grandeur. They soon make way for elegant mansions with opulent front yards. Among them are a number of famed buildings, including the John Brown House and the Athenaeum.

7. Roger Williams Park Zoo

Despite being one of the oldest zoos in America, the Roger Williams Park Zoo has a refreshing take on the experience. Here, animals can roam relatively free without the confines of a tight space. The zoo has also undergone consistent renovations to maintain its modernity, enabling a better time for its animals.

The range of wildlife includes your favorite large animals, from giraffes to elephants and alligators. While you can get an amazing look at red pandas and kangaroos. Aside from the animals, the zoo is great for families thanks to its many interactive experiences. Explore the space on top of a camel or go climbing in the zoo’s treehouse.

6. Brown University

The crown jewel of College Hill, Brown University, has been a fixture of Rhode Island life since 1764. The campus is a sight for sore eyes, while your first steps here will be met with a sense of history. University Hall is the campus’ oldest building and has stood here since 1770. Since then, it has been a barracks along with a hospital during the Revolution.

Continue exploring the campus to find the Wickle Gates, which first appeared in 1901. Now they swing open only twice a year.

Alongside beautiful and historic architecture, visitors should pay a visit to the Herbarium. Since the 1800s, Brown University has studied over 100,000 types of plants offering plant lovers a fascinating look into flora from around the world.

5. Rhode Island State House

The striking Rhode Island State House is an arresting sight whenever you walk by. The stunning building was completed at the beginning of the 20th century, and has been the city’s centerpiece ever since. Its gilded stone facade leads to archways and towers that eventually guide your eyes to the fourth biggest self-supporting dome on earth.

While you can spend all day gawking at the architecture and enjoying the green lawns, the state house is even better inside. Join a free guided tour of the building or simply wander around on your own.

As you stand under the historic dome, look up to find “The Four Freedoms” painted within. The state house is also laden with history and is home to a portrait of George Washington, a replica of the Liberty Bell and a gun from the battle of Gettysburg.

4. Waterplace Park & Riverwalk

Several projects have made up the revitalization of Downcity Providence, but perhaps the best example is Waterplace Park. For years the two major rivers, Woonasquatucket and Moshassuck, snaked through town but were mostly covered by large-scale bridges. Recently they have been replaced, adding a breath of fresh air to the local landscape and turning a new leaf for locals and visitors alike.

Now you can roam the banks of either rivers flanked by the lush Waterplace Park along the Riverwalk. The old bridges were replaced by dainty structures similar to those found in Venice. It makes for a pleasant stroll, and you can also travel along the river on a romantic gondola ride or sunset cruise. From May to October, return to the Riverwalk to experience WaterFire.

3. RISD Museum

The Rhode Island School of Design is one of the preeminent art schools in the United States. The college’s showpiece is the RISD Museum, which showcases work from around the world while representing the styles and genres that best reflect teachers and students.

The range of art shows the standing held by the school, with each collection worthy of its own exhibition. As you wander around the RISD Museum, you’ll come across work from ancient Egypt, historic work by French Impressionists, and pioneer-era America, along with embellished period furniture and contemporary art.

Art aficionados will appreciate the quality of works on display. While casual art fans will enjoy the range of genres and eras within the museum.

2. WaterFire

In 1995, the first WaterFire event took place, marking the beginning of arguably the most revered tradition in Providence. It was started by Barnaby Evans, who created a series of bonfires that are placed along various rivers around town. From May to October, these bonfires are lit up, illuminating the river banks while adding a splendid atmosphere to the surrounding streets.

WaterFire occurs twice a month during this span with the night beginning with a ceremonial gong followed by the lighting. Under the pitch black sky, the fire sparkles against the river.

To best appreciate the art, walk along the river from Waterplace Park to South Main Street Park. Alongside the river, you’ll discover a festival of art and live music to accompany the wondrous installation.

1. Historic Federal Hill

As one of the best neighborhoods in town, no visit in Providence would be complete without exploring Federal Hill. The historic district rose to fame as the home of the city’s large Italian community in the late 19th century.

While the community has dispersed, its influence can still be felt within the neighborhood’s exceptional restaurants and artisan shops.

You can arrive in the area also known as Little Italy by driving under an ornate arch with an eye-catching bronze pine cone fixed to the center. Soon you’ll reach the crown jewel of Federal Hill, Atwells Avenue, where you can indulge in the best of Italian cuisine or nurse a coffee in neighboring cafes. Afterwards, grab some gelato and kick back at DePasqualle Plaza.

Providence and Warwick, the state's two largest cities, both on the coast of Narragansett Bay, are brimming with interesting and ethnically rich traditions, good food, and, in Warwick, family-friendly beaches and a conveniently located airport.

In the early 1990s, Providence, the state capital, began working on a series of projects that came to be known as the Providence Renaissance. Downtown rivers were uncovered and the whimsical Waterplace Park, along each side of the rivers and crossing them with ornate footbridges, was created. The park is host to the popular WaterFire: a recurring summertime evening event in which dozens of flaming braziers blaze along the center of the rivers. The city’s shopping offerings include the Providence Place Mall in the downtown; the older, ornate Arcade between Westminster and Weybosset streets; and many small shops scattered among the neighborhoods.

One hot spot for good dining is Federal Hill, the historic Italian neighborhood, as well as many fine restaurants downtown. Nightlife with live music in many small-to-medium-size venues around town is plentiful. Among the several fine small museums are the Providence Children’s Museum and the Museum of Art at Rhode Island School of Design. Lodging covers a wide range of options, from luxurious downtown boutique hotels to brand name hotels near the highways and airport.

As the home of the Trinity Repertory Company, Providence Performing Arts Center, Brown University, and the Rhode Island School of Design, the city hosts a fine selection of visual and performing arts, from Broadway shows to student art exhibits. People who love architecture should not miss taking a stroll around Rhode Island School of Design along North Main Street and then up toward historic Benefit Street and finally to College Hill, home of Brown University. The walk should meander along Benefit and Wickenden streets for a tour of lovely Colonial, Federal, Greek Revival, and Victorian buildings. Other notable buildings are the Rhode Island State House – an architectural masterpiece -- and the 18th-century John Brown House Museum . Moving southward, toward Warwick, visitors can find the Victorian-era Roger Williams Park , with its zoo, carousel, vintage casino building, lakes, and Museum of Natural History and Planetarium.

Warwick, the state’s second-largest city, is composed of many old village centers and crossroads linked today by a network of cozy neighborhoods. Warwick sprawls along the western shore of Narragansett Bay, sending into the bay many finger-like peninsulas that are well-stocked with marinas, boatyards, breezy lookout points, seafood restaurants, public parks, and beaches . Visitors to Warwick should see the spacious >Goddard Memorial State Park . Warwick is also home to T.F Green Airport , a major hub for Southwest Airlines.

At the northern tip of Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island's capital city is wonderfully compact, diverse, and eccentric. Its long history, from its founding by dissidents escaping Puritan Massachusetts to its colorful contemporary politics, may explain the eccentricities. These combine with its wealth of historic sights (entire neighborhoods are designated historic districts) and artistic highlights to make Providence fun to visit.

Visitors who love architecture will be happy in Providence, whose old downtown (called Downcity here) is filled with priceless period architecture. Art Deco and Beaux-Arts buildings and late Victorian terra-cotta facades were spared the ravages of urban renewal and retain beautiful and astonishingly well-preserved decorative details. Downcity's granite icon, The Arcade , was America's first shopping mall, built in 1828. Filled with locally owned boutiques and galleries, it's still a favorite for shopping.

A high-powered student population from Brown University, Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), and Providence College keep Providence young and vibrant, along with insuring a rich arts and intellectual scene. People here take their restaurants seriously, so be sure and ask locals for dining suggestions — you'll always get an informed opinion.

The 40-acre Roger Williams Park Zoo is not only one of the oldest zoos in the country, but it's a paragon of modern zoo design and concept. At this kid-friendly and largely cage-free place, you can meet a snow leopard, giraffe, elephant, zebra, wildebeest, alligator, kangaroo, and red panda, and small-fry can climb into the treehouse or go for a camel ride.

If you don't like the notion of caged animals and want to learn something about them and their habitats instead of just parading past, this is the zoo for you. Seasonal activities such as the October "Spooky Zoo" and pumpkin spectacular make it even more fun for kids.

The Botanical Center at Roger Williams Park is New England's largest public indoor display garden, with 12,000 square feet of gardens that include two main greenhouses and three smaller ones, as well as an outdoor garden.

Roger Williams Park has a lot more, and it's easy to see why it is one of the city's favorite places to visit for families. Covering 435 acres with gardens and a lake, the park has a 1915 bandstand, an amphitheater, the 1773 Betsy Williams Cottage , and a children's area with a carousel and trackless train rides. Also in the park is a Museum of Natural History with insects, minerals, fossils, and the state's only planetarium .

At least twice a month between mid-May and late November, braziers in the middle of the river are filled with bonfires that light Downcity Providence. During "Full WaterFire," more than 80 fires blaze from Waterplace Park to Memorial/South Main Street Park. "Basin Fire WaterFire" events are smaller versions lighting 22 braziers in the Waterplace Park Basin and five more toward Providence Place mall.

The four-acre Waterplace Park and Riverwalk become a festival of arts and music during WaterFire, as young and old alike enjoy their city's revitalization and cultural vibrancy. This and other festivals are among the best free things to do in Rhode Island.

The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), one of America's top art colleges, reflects its own wide range of specialties in the objects chosen for its museum.

Needlework and textiles, sculpture from ancient to Rodin, Asian art, videos, furnished Federal period rooms, and galleries of priceless paintings comprise dozens of individual collections. So many outstanding works are here that each of its separate collections would be enough to make a museum of its own.

A Providence landmark, the white marble Rhode Island State Capitol dominates the city with the world's fourth largest self-supported dome. The neoclassical building was designed by the architectural firm of McKim, Mead & White, and completed in 1904. You can visit the building on your own or with a free guided tour.

You'll see the painting entitled The Four Freedoms by James Allen King, inside the dome, and Gilbert Stuart's portrait of George Washington. There's also a gun from the battle of Gettysburg and a replica of the Liberty Bell.

Atwells Avenue crowns Federal Hill, the hill that rises to the west of Downcity, and is the vibrant heart of Providence's large Italian American community. That community now spreads throughout the city, but the concentration of restaurants, cafés, and shops selling Italian foods along Atwells Avenue and its adjacent streets and squares stems from the days when immigrants grouped closely with others who shared their language and traditions.

Today, Italian cooks shop in its delis and bakeries to find fresh-made mozzarella, tangy pickled cherry peppers, imported cured meats, and golden panettone. Come here to eat an Italian meal, whether it's spaghetti and red sauce (called simply "gravy" here) in elbow-bumping conviviality or northern Italian dishes served in a linens-and-crystal setting. It's also the place to linger over cappuccino or a dish of gelato at a sidewalk café in DePasquale Plaza , or join in a boisterous street festival on Columbus Day.

People still have trouble pronouncing the names of the Moshassuck and Woonasquatucket, two narrow rivers that wind through Providence, but at least they can see them now. This was not always true - for decades they were hidden by what may have been the world's widest bridge, until they were once again revealed in the 1990s.

In a major revitalization of the entire area, the rivers were uncovered and their banks lined with walkways, benches, gardens, and trees in a riverside corridor known as WaterPlace Park and Riverwalk. Instead of a solid bridge of highways and traffic congestion, the rivers are now spanned by graceful bridges patterned after those in Venice.

During Waterfire, centered in WaterPlace Park, the river is alight with bonfires, and from spring through late autumn, the area is alive with walkers, bikers, joggers, people enjoying the summer concerts, and public art installations.

You can explore these waterways in the daytime, on a sunset cruise, or during WaterFire in an open-air boat ride that gives a new perspective on the city and some interesting sidelights to its attractions and history. Tours include the rivers and the upper parts of Narragansett Bay, revealing some new views of the city's architecture and skyline. You can also ride in La Gondola, an authentic Venetian gondola ; especially in the evening or during WaterFire, this has to be one of the most romantic things to do in all Rhode Island.

A prominent feature on lively Weybosset Street for nearly a century, the Providence Performing Arts Center occupies the former Loew's Movie Palace. The stunning Beaux Arts theater was designed by George and C.W. Rapp of Chicago, who designed many of the most opulent theaters of the time.

The interior is as sumptuous as it was when it opened in 1928, with marble columns, detailed plaster work, a richly ornamented ceiling, and crystal chandeliers. Periodic renovations have modernized its facilities without losing the opulent interior.

The highly respected Trinity Repertory Company is another venue for plays, musicals, and films, with two theater stages.

On this mile-long street traversing the steep hillside that rises from the river to the Brown University campus, you can see an architectural history of Providence. At one end are the restrained and elegant Federal period homes, beautifully restored with their doorways in a neat row close to the street, and as you walk farther, you'll see grand homes set back on their lawns, and later Victorian, even Arts and Crafts-style residences.

Several of the city's tourist attractions are among them — the Governor Stephen Hopkins House with its terraced garden, the Athenaeum (with Edgar Allen Poe connections), and the John Brown House . You can get details on the various buildings from an excellent Benefit Street walking tour booklet from the Providence Preservation Society .

The Brown University campus crowns College Hill and has since 1770; its oldest building and still the center of the campus is University Hall, which served as a barracks and hospital during the Revolution. The impressive Van Wickle Gates open only twice a year, on the first day of classes and for the commencement procession in May.

Stamp collectors will want to see the complete collection of US postage stamps in the John Hay Library ; the John Carter Brown Library has a collection of rare early maps. The free David Winton Bell Gallery has excellent changing exhibits of contemporary and historic art. For student-led campus tours, visit the Corliss-Brackett House.

Here's a secret you probably won't hear about on the tour: Brown's Environmental Center has a conservatory on Waterman Street, a glass house with a jungle of plants and exotic flowers thriving inside through the coldest of winter days. Few know about it, but the center advises that "Artists, gardeners, tinkerers, dreamers, readers, thinkers, general plant lovers, and green and brown thumbs are encouraged to visit."

A signer of the Declaration of Independence and Governor of the Colony of Rhode Island, Stephen Hopkins bought this 1707 home on the corner of Benefit Street in 1743. He added the two-story house at the front, leaving the original building as an ell.

The eight-room house is furnished authentically to Hopkin's period, and contains original artifacts and family pieces. In addition to the house full of antiques, visitors will see a room where the family's slaves lived, and the bedroom where George Washington slept on his visits to Providence. A gallery displays a fine collection of 18 th -century embroidered samplers.

The restored parterre garden is open, even when the house is not, and offers good views of the city from its terraces.

A large green dragon looks down from the roof, alerting passersby that this is no ordinary brick building. Inside are original and creative ways for children ages 1 to 11 to explore the worlds of science, art, technology, physics, architecture, botany, engineering, and world cultures.

The hands-on play exhibits are designed not only to entertain as they teach, but to stimulate each child's curiosity and creativity, whatever their abilities or learning style. "Water Ways" is a favorite for all ages, exploring water in all its forms, from mist to ice. Other exhibits explore the immigrant experience, teach the use of common tools, and use puzzles to explore shapes and spaces.

One of the oldest libraries in America, the Atheneum is not only a delight to those of a bookish nature, but a pilgrimage site for devotees of Edgar Allen Poe . The poet courted Sarah Whitman in its secluded alcoves.

Collections include rare medieval manuscripts from the 1300s, rare editions of works by New England's best-known literary figures, a complete folio of Audubon's Birds of America , and even early children's books. Rare books are displayed in changing exhibits. Although it is a membership library, anyone can join, and the public is welcome to browse and read here.

The Atheneum has a full schedule of literary, musical, and other cultural events, including programs with well-known authors and leading cultural figures.

You can explore the rivers on a Providence River Boat Tour in the daytime, on a sunset cruise, or during WaterFire in a 14-passenger open-air boat that gives a new perspective on the city and some interesting sidelights to its attractions and history. Tours include the rivers and the upper parts of Narragansett Bay, revealing some new views of the city's architecture and skyline.

Maritime history fans will enjoy the tour of Green Jacket Shoal, Rhode Island's largest ship graveyard, guided by an underwater archaeologist who has discovered 26 wooden-hulled vessels there. You can see more of Narragansett Bay on the one-hour Seastreak Ferry between Providence and Newport.

Or you can take the Seastreak as far as the stop in Bristol to explore its shops and historic Main Street. A free RIPTA shuttle service connects the Providence Ferry Terminal to Providence Station, Kennedy Plaza, and the Providence Convention Center.

The largest green space in the city of Providence, the 200-acre Swan Point Cemetery was established in 1846, but redesigned in 1886 as a cemetery park. Its design was inspired by Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the work of landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites .

The landscape varies from open lawns shaded by mature trees to wooded groves and bosky paths bordered by laurel, rhododendrons, and azaleas. The land slopes, steeply in places, to the river. Throughout the cemetery are elaborate tombs, vaults, Victorian and Art Nouveau figural sculptures, simple early stones, and large family plots walled and landscaped like little gardens.

Fans of Gothic fiction seek out the tomb of H.P. Lovecraft , the greatest master of the horror tale since Poe. His grave is inscribed "I am Providence." The Swan Point Cemetery Perimeter Loop is a 2.4-mile trail that's popular for walking and bird-watching; about one-third of it borders the river.

President John Quincy Adams described the 1786 home of merchant John Brown as "the most magnificent and elegant mansion that I have ever seen on this continent." From its lofty hillside setting he could keep an eye on his China Trade ships and warehouses at India Point, the source of his considerable wealth.

That he was a man of taste, as well as wealth and prominence is clear from the house, with its French wallpapers, finely worked decorative detail and moldings, and original Brown family furniture. For an unparalleled view of 18th-century life for the Providence aristocracy, as well as a look at some of the best pieces by Rhode Island cabinetmakers that you'll find anywhere, don't miss this magnificent home.

Even in this posh neighborhood of grand old homes, the 1865 mansion of Governor Henry Lippitt stands out. The 30-room Renaissance Revival villa/Italian palazzo is even more impressive inside, where the stenciling, stained, and etched glass and faux wood and marble finishes make it one of New England's finest interiors — arguably the best in terms of Victorian decoration.

The ornate woodwork, original family furnishings, and mechanical systems that were revolutionary for the mid-19th-century combine to make it a museum of Victorian interior decoration and a window into the life of a prosperous Victorian family.

Generations of the Lippitt family — they were heirs to a RI textile manufacturing fortune - lived in the house for 114 years, and their story comes alive in the excellent guided tours, the only way you can see the exuberant interior. Changing year-long exhibits delve more deeply into some aspect of life in the Victorian era, going behind the scenes to explore the role of household staff, etiquette, and social customs of the times.

Apart from those in Roger Williams Park, the top tourist attractions in Providence are within walking distance of Downcity, where many of the hotels are located. The beautiful city of Newport is first on our list for good reason. Besides ogling at luxury yachts and strutting through The Breakers, there are just endless opportunities for fun in the sun here. If you are the sporty kind, it is worth noting that the International Tennis Hall of Fame resides here, where they host the annual ATP men’s event. 

It is a very romantic getaway, but also can be a great family summer vacation spot. It’s not hard to wonder why bachelor and bachelorette parties reside here with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd beaches all being great locations for lazy beach days.

THE MANSIONS

One of the big draws to Newport, Rhode Island, is checking out how the wealthy lived in the olden days. The major mansions are protected under The Preservation Society of Newport Mansions . This includes the incredible Vanderbilt summer cottage, known as The Breakers.

Anyone who visits here will note that the Vanderbilts idea of a summer cottage could host an army. In fact, it is more appropriately described as a Gilded Age mansion. Along with Marble House, these were mansions built between 1870 and the early 1900s, featuring lavish estate homes designed by the world’s best architects. They also have exquisite art, which you can see on the tour. 

Another beautiful journey you can take is the Rough Point guided tour through Doris Duke’s home. Doris was an heiress and philanthropist in Newport, living in a beautiful estate that is now the Rough Point Museum. From the outside, the stone mansion offers beautiful panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. From the inside, you will find lavish decorative art. 

If there is one mansion you can not miss, it’s The Elms home. In 1996, it became a National Historic Landmark honoring the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Julius Berwind. Between beautiful gardens and historic art, this tour is amazing.

OCEAN DRIVE

Ocean Drive is one of the best things to do in Newport, Rhode Island. At 10 miles long, it’s perfect for rolling down your windows and feeling the ocean breeze.

The drive starts at Bellevue Avenue, where you can find a number of the mansions listed above. The drive winds around different beaches, farms, and parks, making it very scenic. 

INTERNATIONAL TENNIS HALL OF FAME

There are so many different reasons to visit the International Tennis Hall of Fame . Whether you want to hit some balls back and forth on the iconic grass courts or visit their museum about tennis history, there is something for everyone.

During the summer, catch the ATP Men’s tour event where you can see greats like John Isner and Kevin Anderson play! 

FORT ADAMS STATE PARK

Fort Adams State Park is one of the stops along Ocean Drive. While many zip past this park, it’s worth slowing down for.

Take the guided 75 minute tour and learn more about the history of the park and the restoration process. During the guided tour, you’ll also be able to explore the underground tunnels! Self-guided tours are also available.

Fort Adams State Park offers an exceptional panoramic view of both Newport Harbor and the East Passage of Narragansett Bay. In the summer, this state park hosts both a Jazz Festival and a Folk Festival that brings thousands of music lovers to this beautiful area.

Some of the best sunset views in Newport can be seen from Fort Adams State Park Trail loops. This walking area is a 2.5 mile loop around the outside of the Fort Adams structure. 

BEAVERTAIL LIGHTHOUSE MUSEUM

Though not technically in Newport, the Beavertail Lighthouse Museum in nearby Jamestown, RI, is worth a visit.

The museum is home to a collection of information and artifacts about the history of the Beavertail Lighthouse — which is the third-oldest lighthouse in all of North America.

Learn about lighthouse history, and more about Narragansett Bay’s maritime science, technology, and culture. After your museum trip, you can explore Beavertail State Park, which adjoins the lighthouse site.

Cliff Walk in Newport is a National Recreation Trail in a National Historic District. This 3.5-mile walk takes you along the rugged New England shoreline, past mansions, beaches, and more.

On the Cliff Walk, you’ll enjoy Newport’s natural beauty, while also taking in the beautiful architecture of the homes and buildings along the way. Most of the walk is pretty easy, but part of the southern half of the walk is rougher — and you may have to maneuver over the rocky shoreline.

This popular trail is visited by more than 500,000 people each year. The beauty along the routes cannot be beat!

SACHUEST POINT NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

The Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge is officially in Middletown, but it’s so close to Newport, we’re counting it.

This national wildlife refuge is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts and bird watchers.  The refuge is home to the second largest wintering population of harlequin ducks on the Atlantic coast, and more than 200 bird species visit the refuge seasonally.

Enjoy 3 miles of trails, along with elevated observation platforms along the trails to make for easy viewing.

Saltwater fishing is also popular here.

Providence is the capital of Rhode Island and has a lot to offer. For instance, their historic Federal Hill is home to the best Italian bakeries and restaurants in the state, maybe even New England! There is also a lot of great art and fun activities for the entire family to enjoy, such as the Roger Williams Park Zoo.

ROGER WILLIAMS PARK ZOO

With more than 150 animals to see, the Roger Williams Park Zoo has so much to offer. The park offers tons of green space and other interesting activities, such as the Museum of Natural History, recreation areas like tennis courts, among other enjoyable activities.

The zoo was founded in 1872, making it the third oldest zoo in the nation! The Museum of Natural History also includes a beautiful Planetarium, with several education programs for kids.

WATERFIRE PROVIDENCE

WaterFire in Providence takes place in the downtown area at Waterplace Park on Memorial and South Main Street Park. It’s a beautiful display that occurs from May to November, with a special holiday fire lighting returning in December. Over 80 braziers are lit up just after the sun goes down to create a magical ambiance throughout the downtown area.

This is one of the most popular attractions, as 1 million visitors come to experience the WaterFire showings. It also has an incredibly important economic impact, creating $113 million in economic output for local businesses! 

JOHN BROWN HOUSE

The John Brown House Museum was the first mansion to be built in Providence. Today, it is a museum that not only shows the one of the most elegant and magnificent mansions, according to John Quincy Adams, but also depicts what life was like back then for women, the architects, and landscapers — and of course, John Brown. 

It also takes a look into important topics, like slavery and independence. Art, culture, and history are abundant here in this home.

HISTORIC FEDERAL HILL

The Italian corner in Rhode Island rests in Historic Federal Hill . It offers the iconic Atwells Avenue, with surrounding streets lined with pasta restaurants, Italian bakeries, and boutique shopping.

With each stop, such as at Camille’s on the Hill, you’ll not only indulge in Italian food, but also quickly learn the immigration stories from families that have come from Italy to take part in the American Dream. 

The cobblestone streets with Italian flag colors used as driving dividers on the road will let you know that you are in the right spot. In fact, the street ends up being blocked off by cars, which allow patrons to roam freely in and out of shops! 

RISD MUSEUM OF ART

RISD Museum of Art stands for the Rhode Island School of Design Museum of Art, and offers strong collections of modern and interesting art exhibits for all to enjoy. This multi-building art museum came about in 1877, showcasing work from ancient times all the way to the present day. This is incredible to see first-hand because it shows just how much things have changed. 

With over 100,000 works of art to be explored, there is no shortage of things to see. Both permanent and rotating exhibits can be found here, and they even offer some exhibits online.

PROVIDENCE PERFORMING ART CENTER

The not-for-profit Providence Performing Art Center was formerly known as the Loew’s State Theater, and even before that, the Palace Concert Theater. It’s located in Johnson and Wales Providence Campus and offers tons of events and award-winning shows open to the public. From adult comedy to plays, their event calendar is busy offering different shows for an all-inclusive experience.

Make it a date night, as there are tons of restaurants and eateries in the neighborhood. If you are seeing a late-night show and coming from out of town, there is also a lot of accommodations nearby.

Not to be confused with Bristol, Connecticut, Bristol, Rhode Island , is an amazing area to visit.

Traditional and historic, this water seaport was named after Bristol, England, and was built on traditional territories named the Pokanoket Wampanoag. With state parks, museums, and more — there is a lot to see here.

COLT STATE PARK

Colt State Park is one of the biggest and best green spaces in Rhode Island, offering 464 acres on Poppasquash Neck. Its beautiful panoramic views of Narangasset Bay could have you sitting for hours taking in the Bay’s breeze. With four miles of paved bike paths and additional trail loops, there is a lot of activity going on here. 

Whether you are someone who wants to take advantage of the active areas, or you are a photographer looking to explore the history and the beautiful area, there is something for all here. 

HERRESHOFF MARINE MUSEUM

For those who love the history of boats and open waters, head out to the Herreshoff Marine Museum .

Particularly those interested in the yachting history of Rhode Island, this museum has a serious section dedicated to America’s Cup Hall of Fame. There is also an amazing exhibit and collection of boats, artifacts, and other museum sections uncovering more than 25 years of boating history. 

Blithewold Gardens and Museum may just be the best part of visiting Bristol. This beautiful 33-acre summer estate is America’s best example of the Country Place Era. Blithewold Mansion is a whopping 45-room home encompassed in a plethora of gardens that are explored yearly by many visitors. 

It’s an inspiring area for many, as the gardens resemble romance, mystery, joy, and serenity, with beautiful stonework that can be marveled at for hours.

NARRAGANSETT

Narragansett is one of the most beautiful oceanside towns you can visit in Rhode Island.

With beautiful beaches and areas to walk, run, and bike, it’s become one of the most popular New England summer vacation spots. Not to mention, it has an upscale island feel, very similar to Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket. 

NARRAGANSETT BAY BEACHES

Narrangansett Bay Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Scarborough State Beach is the most popular of the Rhode Island State beaches. Other popular beach destinations include Salty Brine Beach and Roger Wheeler State Beach.  Going to any of these beaches is easily one of the most popular things to do.

SAIL TO BLOCK ISLAND

Block Island is basically the Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket for Rhode Island! While you can certainly sail your way there, you can also take the famous Block Island Ferry. The Newport Hi-Speed Ferry can get you from Newport to Block Island in just 60 minutes. 

The Mohegan Bluffs is one of the most beloved attractions because frankly, a beach that sits at the bottom of 200-foot bluffs is quite majestical to take in. Even if it is just a day trip, it is worth taking the ferry to come here.

You can also find the beautiful Southeast Lighthouse here, which sits atop of the bluffs, making for beautiful pictures. 

COASTGUARD HOUSE

The Coastguard House is a beautiful place to grab a bite to eat. It’s also the perfect place to learn about history.

Once it was a station built of solid granite, perched upon rocks overlooking Narragansett Bay. Now, it’s been converted into a local’s favorite restaurant with spectacular views. It features a lounge perfect for a pre-dinner cocktail, and a full dining room for family meals or date nights.
