This shrine in Cabanatuan used to be an American camp but became a concentration camp when the Japanese occupied the Philippines for some time during World War II. When the war ended, more than 500 prisoners of war were freed. Today, this shrine commemorates the sacrifice and the heroism of the Filipinos and foreign soldiers who fought the Japanese. You will see memorabilia and monuments displaying the courage of fallen heroes.

Gapan is not just one of the oldest towns in Nueva Ecija, but also in the country. The ancestral homes in town are proof of Gapan’s long history. You’ll find plenty of old colonial houses near the Three Kings Parish. The capiz shell windows, the design of the facade and the wooden materials elicit an undeniable sense of nostalgia.

Go on a Culinary Adventure

Nueva Ecija not only has a strong cultural and historical heritage, but also delicious delicacies that will make your mouth water. The batutay longganisa in Cabanatuan is a must-eat while in the city. It is made of beef and also has garlic. Try the tilapia ice cream , this is an unusual flavor but still worth tasting. It is sweet and a slight fish taste. Eat the pinapaitang kambing with alibangbang leaves while you are in the province. As the “rice bowl of the Philippines” you can’t leave Nueva Ecija without trying the local kakanin , the two most famous are the nilupak and palitaw .

Where to Stay in Nueva Ecija

Nueva Ecija has a number of accommodations that are affordable and have all the comforts you need for a relaxing stay. Cabanatuan City is your likely stop for a night or so when you explore the province. The city has more options for hotels and dining, and it is also a transportation hub for those who want to include more places in their itinerary.

Another option is San Jose City, it doesn’t have as many choices as Cabanatuan, but you will still find more affordable places to stay compared to other parts of the province.

Must-See Nueva Ecija Tourist Spots

Table of Contents

Now in its 10 th year, the #NLEXLakbayNorte continues its advocacy of promoting more tourist destinations in Northern Luzon. However, because of the global pandemic, the typical 5-6 days caravan across several provinces of past editions is watered down to several shorter journeys focusing on one province. This writer of Out of Town Blog was recently invited to participate in the 2-day familiarization tour of Nueva Ecija. Following IATF-enforced safety protocols, we explored other must-visit places in the province known as the “rice granary of the Philippines”.

Proving that Nueva Ecija is more than just endless rice fields, this landlocked province wants to inform travelers about its stunning nature spots, relaxing wellness resorts, thriving farm tourism, rich local culinary culture, and more. To give you several reasons why Nueva Ecija should be looked upon as more than just a pit stop en route to places like Baler in Aurora, here are the exciting places we explored during our two-day Lakbay Norte to Nueva Ecija.

Colosboa Hills in Cuyapo

Situated on the rolling slopes of Cuyapo, Colosboa Hills is every bit of a gift to every outdoor enthusiast. This 10-hectare nature park boasts camping grounds spread over a picturesque landscape and a three-kilometer bike trail that combines downhill and uphill tracks catered to both beginner and intermediate mountain bike riders.

Newly planted trees are protected by bamboo cages

Seasoned biker Edrie Ocampo, who was hired by the tourism office of the province as a consultant to design the biking track, said “We designed a trail that will not only test the skills, endurance, and stamina of bikers but also give them the opportunity to enjoy the majestic view.” He also shared with us the plan of the local government to stage an off-road biking competition in Colosboa once the trails are finalized.

Indeed, the scenic setting of Colosboa shall give every “ Tambikers “, a reason to sharpen their uphill and downward biking skills while surrounded by a beautiful set of nature that includes a clear view of Mt. Bangkay and Mt. Dulay-Dulayan.

The park is also being repopulated with native trees. Cuyapo Tourism Officer Joan Mendoza said the LGU initiated the replanting of a variety of trees such as the Palawan Cherry, Bambanaba, Fire tree, and Yellow tree.

Tambayan Ni Berto Breakfast with a view

Famished after several rounds of negotiating the steep biking trails? Don’t worry because the inviting Tambayan ni Berto , a nipa-hut restaurant nestled on the same hilltop, serves mouth-watering boodle-type meals perfect for groups of bikers and friends.

Argamosa Farm Resort

Address : Purok 5, Cuyapo, Nueva Ecija

Travelers looking for a relaxing weekend to enjoy both nature and wellness, can visit and stay at this farm laden with beautiful corners comprising of gardens, ponds, rice fields, and homey villas inspired by Balinese architecture.

One of the Bali-inspired villa in the Farm

The owner Rudy Argamosa originally envisioned his five-acre property as a family vacation spot but eventually decided to transform it into a farm-wellness resort. Located in Paitan Sur, guests can either staycation or enjoy a day tour and feast on the farm’s farm-to-table food. Mind you, their sumptuous servings not only include fresh fruits and vegetables, it also consists of livestock produce. As Mr. Argamosa said, “We harvest and catch it, our guests eat it”.

The pond which is a favorite spot for pre-nup pictorials

“Right now, we have a lot of occupancies next year booked by tourists coming from Europe,” Argamosa said as he pertains to the vast appeal of wellness and nature-friendly resorts particularly of Argamosa Farm Resort to foreigners in search of a tranquil environment.

Highland Bali Villas

Address: Intang, Pantabangan, Nueva Ecija Telephone: 0917 149 8272

Although “Bali” has become a much-used branding word of many resorts in the Philippines, one can’t deny how the influence of Balinese architecture has made it possible for resort owners and developers to come up with elevated style and earthly vibe in their properties.

One of the swimming pools of Highland Bali

One such example is this high-end resort in Pantabangan, Nueva Ecija which serves as a perfect getaway for a long-deserved family holiday or an anniversary wellness-and-chill with your special someone.

Aside from the comfort-lavished rooms and great food served in the restaurant and poolside bar, the resort features a couple of outdoor pools, world-class spa service, and an amazing view of the Sierra Madre and the Pantabangan lake.

Farm Ridge by Desmond Farm

Address: Km3 Malbang, Pantabangan, 3124 Nueva Ecija Mobile Phone: 0908 227 7602

Nestled on the slopes of the Sierra Madre mountains and overlooking the calm waters of Pantabangan lake are a set of cabins that gorgeously blends with the surrounding nature.

A sea of clouds can be visible early in the morning

Constructed on the vast farmland of Farm Ridge by Desmond Farm , these hilltop cabins dishes breathtaking outdoor views and a country vibe stamped with mother nature’s serenity.  Part agricultural and farm tourism site, guests can enjoy a much-needed Zen-and-chill experience while regaling at the spectacular landscape in between spreads of healthy farm-to-table meals.

Currently, there are six cabins of varying layouts but sharing the ambiance of a calm bucolic lifestyle, and the main farmhouse called Matahum . Each cottage was named from different words taken from Tagalog, Cebuano and Hiligaynon languages, such as Amihan, Hiraya, Bahaghari, Maharika, Malipayon and Marahuyo .

The cabins’ interiors are lavished with mostly wooden materials and finished with floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors with nipa thatched roofs. Other features include a private bath, a loft, and a veranda that opens to the majestic views of the mountains and the lake.

Myriad Farm

Accredited as a Learning Site for Agriculture by the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) in 2019, and as a Farmers Field School (FFS) by TESDA in 2020, Myriad Farms— located in Brgy. Triala in Guimba—conduct training for both local farmers and visitors wanting to learn basic and advanced farming methods.

Farm tourism mix with farm learning at Myriad farm

Activities on the farm include Harvest and pay of seasonal fruits and vegetables, Carabao-riding experience, Farm demo and mini-lecture on how to make jam, fruit vinegar, tomato sauce, and processing of meat such as pork tocino, garlic longanisa, as well as vermiculture and compost making.

Myriad Farms also conduct agricultural training on rice production, organic farming methods for livestock, and vegetable and fruit produce.

Pantabangan Dam

If you’re on the lookout for jogging and biking trails, then the route passing through the span of Pantabangan Dam should be on top of your list of places to see in Nueva Ecija.

The giant sign of Pantabangan Dam

Overlooking the waters of Pantabangan Lake (a tributary of Pampanga River), the dam is an earth-fill embankment dam since the spot where the water flows, was once an old town. Because rainwaters from the Sierra Madre always flood the town, the Philippine Congress passed a law authorizing the development of the Pampanga Basin in 1969. Soon, the old town was replaced by a dam reservoir.

Natividad Farmhouse

Address: Pangasinan – Nueva Ecija Rd, Guimba, Nueva Ecija Phone: 0936 952 9824

The inviting swimming pool

Located in Brgy. Casongsong in Guimba, Nueva Ecija, this farmhouse is another ideal place to enjoy a secluded stay. Offering only a few rooms—all of which are spacious, comfortable, and furnished with complete features, expect a socially-distanced vacation communing with nature and the farm’s countless roaming adorable sheep and goats. Enjoy a sit-in by a bonfire or gaze at the starry-filled skies at nighttime. Other activities include swimming and heaps of Zen and chill time.

Forest Garden

Address: Canile Trail, Pantabangan, Nueva Ecija

Unlike the controversial Dolomite Beach, this patch of property is situated on a hilltop in Brgy. Malbang Pantabangan is good for one’s mental health. Why wouldn’t it be? it has amazing nature scenery and fascinating wooden structures millennials would describe as “Hashtag for the Gram”

A cup of coffee + this marvelous view = good for mental health

A small cafe is also located in the property so you can pick a comfy spot at one of Forest Garden’s art installation creations and enjoy a cup of coffee while regaling at the impressive view of the Sierra Madre.

Hapag Vicenticos

Address: 1077 Del Pilar Street, Cabanatuan City, 3100 Nueva Ecija Phone: 0917 565 7860

This culinary landmark fronting Cabanatuan city’s Freedom Park serves all-time favorite Filipino cuisine inside a charming fusion of a traditional heritage house and ‘bahay na bato’ setting.

Loving the interior of the restaurant

Enjoy a family-reunion type of feast at Hapag Vicentico’s by ordering some of their bestsellers like the crispy pata kare-kare, deep-fried hito, adobong baby pusit, tortang along, and more.

Cabanatuan’s Freedom Park

A stroll through the Freedom Park of Cabanatuan is not complete without learning something about the city’s history. For newbies in the city, it is advisable to hire a tour guide—specifically the one being groomed by the tourism office to become the city’s Carlos Celdran, Jayson Rabino.

Jayson Rabino, Cabanatuan's Carlos Celdran

During our brief walking tour, he gave us a history lecture and some anecdotes about the city’s Freedom Park and adjacent historical sites.

It’s great to see that historical learning is being fused with tourism promotions in many parts of the country. Therefore, it is advisable that fellow travelers try to hire the services of these historian slash tour guides trained by an increasing number of local tourism offices. Why only travel for the ‘Gram when you can travel and learn as well. Plus, you can also help these chroniclers of our past earn additional income.

Nueva Ecija is renowned for its magnificent churches and picturesque rice field landscapes. The name itself is quite intriguing, stemming from “mina” (mine) and “lungao” (cave). This mythical ecotourism haven sprawls across 2,018 hectares and is nestled at the base of the Sierra Madre mountain range, within the municipality of General Tinio, which was formerly referred to as Papaya.

Although the limestone walls and rock formations at Minalungao National Park might not be the most towering or grandiose, their vibrant colors and the crystal-clear, invigorating waters of the Sumacbao River, combined with a plethora of exciting activities, come together to create an exceptional destination.

For avid travelers in search of hidden gems, the Nueva Ecija Pantabangan Dam is a well-kept secret. Ranked as the third-largest dam in Asia, this location is a testament to natural serenity. Nowadays, both locals and tourists flock to this destination to indulge in a variety of water activities, including jet skiing, kayaking, and rafting.

Back in 1973, the government made a significant announcement – the submersion of the old Pantabangan town to create one of Asia’s largest dams. This transformation gave birth to the new Nueva Ecija Pantabangan Dam, which has since become a crucial source of hydroelectric power and water for irrigating the farmlands of Central Luzon.

The construction of the Nueva Ecija Pantabangan Dam came at a cost. The town center and seven other barangays were engulfed by the rising waters, leading to the compulsory relocation of thousands of residents to higher ground.

A decade later, the region faced the challenges of El Niño, which temporarily revealed some sections of the old town. However, over the past few years, the original Pantabangan town has largely remained submerged beneath the dam’s waters.

Initially built in 1974, the Pantabangan Dam stands as a remarkable testament to human engineering prowess. This colossal irrigation dam offers visitors the opportunity for a serene walk across its vast expanse or the chance to rent a boat and explore the tranquil waterscape.

Rancho De Cabileo – Exploring Nueva Ecija

Location: Brgy. Cabileo, Cuyapo Indulge in an unparalleled natural experience by adding Rancho De Cabileo to your travel itinerary. Tucked away in the serene surroundings of Brgy. Cabileo, Cuyapo, this ecological park offers breathtaking views of the majestic Colosboa Hills. Immerse yourself in the picturesque scenery, where grazing cows, meandering riverbeds, and vibrant greenery harmonize against a backdrop of towering mountains. To enhance your adventure, consider renting a boat to explore further or relishing a delectable, specially crafted lunch prepared by our welcoming staff.

For those who may think that Nueva Ecija only boasts rice fields and carabaos leisurely enjoying river baths, prepare to be pleasantly surprised. The Philippines is a treasure trove of new and exhilarating destinations waiting to be discovered if you know where to look, and Colosboa Hills in the tranquil town of Cuyapo proves just that.

This hidden gem in Nueva Ecija has been gaining popularity on Filipino social media platforms, and the reasons are crystal clear. It’s adorned with lush rolling hills and verdant trees, all set against the majestic backdrop of Mount Bangcay. In fact, it’s earned the moniker ‘The New Zealand of Central Luzon’ owing to its striking resemblance to the landscapes of New Zealand.

Apart from the activities like biking, hiking, and jogging, Colosboa Hills offers an ideal spot for a relaxing picnic when the weather is mild and breezy. You might even have the chance to witness cows peacefully grazing, reminiscent of the pastures in New Zealand. However, as responsible visitors, let’s remember to leave no trace and ensure we do not disturb the local wildlife.

Camp Pangatian War Memorial Shrine – Exploring Nueva Ecija

The Camp Pangatian Memorial Shrine encompasses a 550-meter camp encircled by a perimeter of barbed wire fencing, with four sentinel towers standing guard. Within this hallowed space, you’ll find an assemblage of monuments and relics that bear witness to the pivotal events that unfolded during the occupation.

A meandering dirt road, flanked by majestic rows of cypress trees, guides visitors toward this memorial site. At the heart of the shrine stands a monumental marble niche, adorned with a simple yet profound engraving – the single word, “Cabanatuan.”

Travel Guide: Nueva Ecija (2023)

tourist spot in san antonio nueva ecija

Nueva Ecija, best known as the “rice granary of the Philippines,” is an underrated tourism destination. Aside from quick visits for work or stopovers in some towns like Cabanatuan City, we usually just pass through the province during road trips on our way to other destinations in the North.

tourist spot in san antonio nueva ecija

We’ve taken road trips to Dingalan in Aurora passing the towns of Laur and Gabaldon. We’ve also driven through the zigzag mountain roads of Bongabon on the way to Baler. During previous motorcycle rides, we usually just stopped at the tourist markers, welcome arches, and the views of mountains on our way to the coastal towns.

It was interesting to discover some of the new attractions in the province, during a recent Lakbay Norte media familiarization tour. Below are some of the tourist spots that might be of interest to road trippers, motorcycle riders, and cyclists looking for new destinations to visit for their post-pandemic weekend getaways.

Where exactly is Nueva Ecija?

Nueva Ecija is a landlocked province located in the Central Luzon Region. The province is bordered by Bulacan, Pampanga, Tarlac, Pangasinan, Nueva Viczaya, and Aurora. The former capital and the province’s largest LGU Cabanatuan City is accessible via the North Luzon Expressway and Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX), exiting in Tarlac. Depending on the traffic and route you take, travel time from Manila takes about three to four hours.

For bikers and motorcycle riders who can’t use expressways, the usual route is via AH26 or the Pan-Philippine Highway. Coming from the North (Quezon City), Nueva Ecija is the next province you encounter after Bulacan.
