Tourist Places Tarapith

Tarapith is one of the 52 Shakti Peethams of India. It is so called because the eye ball (tara) of Maa Sati fell here. when Vishnu severed her body with chakra, to stop Shiva from his Tandav nritya. The present temple with eight roofs was built in 1225 A.D. by Jagannath Ray of Mallarpur village.

Nalhati is one of the 52 Shakti Peethams of India.It is so called because Parvati's throat (Nal) fell here, when Vishnu severed her body with chakra, to stop Shiva from his Tandav nritya, is just 20 kms away.

Tarapith Temple, Tarapith Overview

Tarapith is a small temple located on the banks of the Dwarka River that flows in Birbhum, at a distance of 264 km from Kolkata. The temple is ancient and is considered to be extremely auspicious by the Hindu community. The regal temple, one of the 51 Shakti Peeths in India, is one of the most important places where tantric rituals are followed even today. It remains busy all through the year and is often visited by the poor who come here to have a free meal.

As per legends, one eyeball of Sati fell here at Tarapith, when Lord Shiva roamed the universe mourning her loss. In view of this believed event, the name of the village was changed from Chandipur to Tarapith since the Bengali word for eyeball is Tara. The temple is thus dedicated to Ma Tara. The Tarapith temple represents the destructive aspect of Lord Shiva in the form of Kali. As per the Hindu traditions, Ma Tara is believed to be the second out of the ten goddesses of great wisdom and is also known as Kalika, Bhadra-Kali, and Mahakali. She is the tantric demonstration of Goddess Durga. The temple is an architectural wonder full of mysteries and exciting facts which make it a must-visit.

Tarapith is famous for the temple of Tara ma and sadhan pith of Sadhak - Bamakhyapa. Tarapith, a holy religious place, is situated in a village Tarapur under Rampurhat Police Station of Rampurhat Sub-Division in the district of Birbhum. It is said to be so called because the eye ball (tara) of Sati fell here. Others say that Tarapith is not pith but the place owes its sanctity to the fact that the Sage Basistha here worshipped the Goddess Sati in the form of Tara. The Goddess Tara is a form of Kali, with two hands, is garlanded with snakes, and is adorned in sacred threads. But the Temple is dedicated to the destructive aspect of Shiva, which takes the form of Kali. She requires sacrifice daily to satisfy her blood lust so every morning goats are sacrifices on the altar of the Temple. The deity of Tara is enshrined inside the temple. It is a special temple for more reasons than one. The nearby cremation ground in the first place makes this a quite rare temple, especially considering its surroundings. The worship here includes blood offerings. The strong rituals, the hymns sung here also contribute to make this temple a very special one. The temple base is made up of red brick. There are two Tara images in the sanctum. The stone image of Tara is camouflaged by a metal image which the devotees see.

Tarapith Temple (Nearest City & Station - Rampurhat) Ma Tara Temple is the main attraction of the temple town of Tarapith, which is located towards the town centre. Ma Tara Temple, in 1225, is a prominent tantric temple related to Shaktism sect of Hinduism. The main temple in the town is a small temple built of marble and terra cotta, it has a curved roof called the 'dochala'. All the giant doors falling in the way to the main shrine have carved and are made up of engraved metal with extremely intricate designs of various religious symbols carved on them.

Tarapith Maha Sasan Tarapith Maha Sasan is an auspicious place, lies very near to the Tarapith Temple. It is pretty well known for the Tantric rituals performed here. Goddess (Goddess Tara) prevails here in the form of a twinkling of light, like a "Star" (meaning of Tara in Hindi, Sanskrit, Bengali and other languages), a fearsome Tantric aspect of Adhya-Shakti . Here the Third Eye of "Sati" had fallen and it is recognized as one of the 52 Peeths (where pieces of dead body of "Sati" had fallen) of "Sati", a place reflecting lots of supernatural and extraordinary powers. If we look back through the pages of history, we can find that Maharishi Vashistha (Guru of Ramachandra), performed rituals or rites over here in order to attain siddha ("perfection" in viewing the deity and obtain her blessing) from Goddess Tara and to get her blessing. In the later stage, the worship of Goddess Tara began with Tantric rituals following the order of Panchamakar Vidhi or Sadhana . Worshipping with five elements, namely, 1. Madya (Wine) 2. Goddessns (Meat) 3. Matsya (Fish) 4. Hasta Mudra (Parched Grain) 5. Maithuna (Sexual intercourse) is called a Panchamakar Sadhana. Worship of some Gods in Hinduism, basically those who have Taamsi or Tamo (destructive) qualities require this method of worship, to get rid of desire from within human beings. It is also said that it is pretty easy to attain accomplishment by worshiping here. Rituals of Tantrism practiced by famous 'Matri Sadhak' Shri Shri Bama Khepa aliasly renowned as Bam Dev.

Nalhateshwari Temple (Nalhati & Nearest Tarapith, Nearest Station - Nalhati) The throat of Sati or "Nala" fell here as known by tradition. This is a beautiful place with fine vicinity and plateaus all around it where Maa Nalateswri resides and has resemblance with Kamakha and Kalighat pithas. The goddess of this place is known as Maa Nalateswri who is also praised as Maa or "Bhagobidhata-Nalateswri" or Devi Parvati or Kalika. According to the localities, in 252th Bengali year or "Bongapto", "Kamdev" (the Hindu god of love and desire) who had dreamt about its existence discovered the larynx of maa sati at this Nalahati forest.

It is situated near Nalhati Railway Station on the Howrah-Sahebganj loop line, and is connected by the Panagarh-Moregram Road. Nalhateswari Temple is located on a small & beautiful hill.

Mallarpur Shiv temples This temple is located about 10 kilometres from Tarapith and is considered to be one of the oldest temples in the Birbhum. There are around 21 temples and a tiny pond surrounding this temple which makes it aesthetically beautiful. This temple was built by the Malla rulers some 800 years ago. This temple is totally dedicated to Lord Shiva and it is said that in ancient times the temple was surrounded with dense forest. Especially during the festival of Shivratri, devotees of Lord Shiva visit this temple to seek holy blessings. A magnificent fair is also hosted in the adjoining Nimtala area on this day.

Santiniketan (Santiniketan & Nearest Station - Bolpur) Shantiniketan is a tourist attraction also because Rabindranath lived here and penned many of his literary classics (namely Tagore songs, poems, novels etc.) and his home is a place of historical importance. The Shantiniketan campus is adorned by splendid sculptures, frescoes, murals, and paintings of Rabindranath, Nandalal Bose, Ramkinkar, Binodbehari Mukhopadhyay and others. Birbhum District, where the Shantiniketan is located, is also famous for its fairs and festivals like Poush Mela (December), Joydev Mela (January), Basanta Utsav (Holi) in March and the famous mystic Baul Singers. Rabindra Janmotsav is celebrated in mid-April to mark The Bengali New Year and as well Tagore's Anniversary. Briksharopan, The festival of Planting Saplings, and Halakarshan, The festival of Plowing the Fields, are celebrated on 22nd And 23rd day of Sravana (August). Varshamangal, The festival of Rains, is celebrated during August/September. Poush Mela is an annual fair and festival that takes place in Santiniketan. Commencing on the 7th day of the month of Poush, the fair officially lasts for three days, although vendors may stay up until the month-end. Poush Mela is characterised by its live performances of Bengali folk music, specially bauls. Traditional bauls, wandering minstrels singing Bengali songs. Tribal dances (Santali) is also the part of the fair.

SANTINIKETAN

By Air:  The nearest airport is Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose international airport, which is located at Kolkata.

By Train:  The nearest railhead is Bolpur. Frequently Trains are available from both Howrah and Sealdah (Kolkata) to Bolpur.

By Road:  An excellent road connects Santiniketan with Kolkata. Other major cities are well connected by road with the place.

Mallarpur Shiv Temple Mallarpur Shiv Temple is one of the oldest mandir in the Birbhum District. It is located in Mallarpur village 2 km away from Mallarpur Rail Station. In ancient times, the temple was surrounded with dense forest. Later on the temple was built in 1192 by devoted king Malla Raj. The main temple is surrounded with 21 temples and a holy pond situated in the eastern side of the temple. It is near about 10-12 km away from Tarapith.

It is located in Mallarpur village 2 kms away from Mallarpur Rail Station.

Bamakhyapa Temple (Tarapith) Sri Sri Bamdev Smriti, a pink colour temple dedicated to Saint Bamakhyapa. Often called as the mad saint, Bamakhyapa was a famous tantrik known for his divine craziness. There is a tomb and samadhi right outside of the temple where people offer prayers and offerings in the name of the saint.

By Road : From Tarapith Bus Terminus thorugh private car via Tarapith Road within approx  9 min (3.1 km) devotees can reach to the Bamakhyapa Temple at Atla.

Lakshmi Temple (Tarapith) This temple of Goddess Lakshmi is said to have been built 500 years ago by a Hindu saint called Saint Kamdev Bramacharya. He built the idol of the Goddess himself with neem tree wood and Ganga soil. The temple is a very revered spot and is visited by many devotees. It is about 12 km from Tarapith.

Birchandrapur Temple Birchandrapur Temple - Birchandrapur, 10 k.m. away from the Tarapith, is famous for the birth place of Nityananda Swami, co founder of Baisnav religion with Shri Chityanyadev. Birchandrapur, named after Birbhadra Goswami - the son of Nityananda, is a part of the village Ekachakra which according to mythology has been inhabited by the Pandavas. 'Akali mandir' is situated at Akalipur, near Bhadrapur, 25 k.m. from Rampurhat and famous for its unique hexagonal structure and had a history of more than 300 years (it is associated with Maharaja Nandakumar). According to the lore the ancestral house of Maharaja Nandakumar is still there at Akalipur. At present there is a Vaishnab religious center (ISCON TEMPLE) with some old temples in Birchandrapur.

Bakreswar Temple Bakreswar is famous for its Bakreswar temple which is dedicated to Lord Bakranath (Shiva) and Goddess Kali. The temple is believed to be erected at the spot where the forehead and brows of Goddess Sati fell. The main temple of Bakreswar is surrounded by many small shrines which are dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Bakreswar is situated around 24 kms South West of Suri (the district headquarter of Birbhum) and about 7 kms from Dubrajpur Rail station.

Tarapith is a temple town in the central region of West Bengal , India. It is a major Hindu pilgrimage centre and several thousand devotees visit the temple every day.

According to Hindu belief, an insulted Sati, the wife of Lord Shiva, sacrificed herself at a yagya (fire worship ritual) which was being performed by her father Dakshmaharaj. Angry with this incident Lord Shiva started the Tandava Nritya (Dance of Destruction). In order to prevent the destruction of all creation, Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshan charka (wheel) to cut the body of Sati into several parts. Sati's body was scattered all over the Indian subcontinent. There are 51 such holy spots where temples have been erected and they are called Pithas or the Shakti Pithas. Some of the Pithas are in West Bengal. The most popular of them are Kalighat (in Kolkata), Bakreshwar and Tarapith. It is believed that the eyeball of Sati fell down at Tarapith. In Bengali, the eyeball is called 'Tara' and that is why the name of the village was changed from the earlier Chandipur to Tarapith.

It is said that in ancient times Saint Bashistha attained his divinity by meditation under a Simul tree on the bank of river Dwaraka. He attained his divinity by worshipping the Goddess Sati or Tara (in the form of Kali) and sitting on the panch mundi ashan or the sitting place surrounded by 5 skulls of different animals, like human, owl, elephant, black snake and monkey. That Simul tree is no more there and river Dwaraka has moved away. Subsequently, a number of saints like Saint Bamakshyapa (19th-century devotee) and Kamalakanta (18th-century devotee, who composed many songs, and still sung) came here to worship the Goddess for their spiritual salvation.

The old temple of Goddess Tara is somewhat damaged. The present temple with eight roofs was built in 1225 by one Jagannath Ray of Mallarpur village. On the main gate of the temple, the statue of Goddess Durga and her full family are carved. On the left, the war of Kurukshetra (Mahabharata) and on the right stories from Ramayana are depicted.

Several highways run over Tarapith. Panagarh–Morgram Highway heads south to Durgapur via Suri , Dubrajpur and Ilambazar and heads north to Morgram via Nalhati . NH 114 (previously NH 2B) heads south to Bardhaman via Sainthia and Santiniketan .

Tarapith is a small town and you can walk around and rickshaws are also available. Beware of crowds during peak season.

There are plenty of moderate eating houses serving standard Bengali meals.

Most hotels have restaurants - check if they provide meals for non-guests. Many of the hotels provide a variety of cuisine.

Since hard drinks are not available openly, it is better to carry one's own stock of hard drinks if you need one.

There are around 350 lodges or hotels in Tarapith, mostly catering to budget tourists. There is little that is luxurious as this is a pilgrimage centre. There is no problem in getting a place to stay but many people get back to Rampurhat or move on to other places.
