What to know

Nainital, the charming Himalayan lake town, is a picture-postcard perfect hill-station and one of the most popular in Northern India. Homesick Britishers used to flock to this quaint town spread over a forested valley. It is also known for the revered Naina Devi temple, which stands on the edge of the lake. There are many renowned personalities who are either born here or have been associated with Nainital . Jim Corbett, author, and conservationist, was born in Nainital and was also educated here. Major Somnath Sharma, India’s first Param Vir Chakra awardee as well as legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan were educated at Sherwood College of Nainital .

You can reach Kathgodam Railway Station by train and it is 23 km away from Nainital. Any Major city of India has trains to Kathgodam railway station. A popular Train called Ranikhet Express runs from New Delhi & Kathgodam. After reaching there you can take a bus to reach Nainital.

Motorable road covers only 3 km from the base of the peak where the nearest taxi stand is located. Further, it is about 6 km steep trek to the peak.

5. Tiffin Top

One of the most popular tourist places in Nainital, Tiffin Top is also known as Dorothy’s Seat. It gives the most picturesque view of the Nainital city and beautiful Kumaon mountains.

Perched at 2,290 meters, this place is a photographer’s paradise. It is a famous picnic spot and as a matter of fact, derives its name from being the most desired place to have tiffin on the hilltop.

You can also enjoy a horse ride there and charges typically vary between Rs. 500 to Rs. 700.

Timings: 6 am to 6 pm.

6. Himalayan Darshan Point

Also known as Himalayan Viewpoint, it is located on the way to Kilbury Bird Sanctuary.

The viewpoint lies at an altitude of 2000 meters and offers magnificent views of the Himalayan mountain peaks and valleys below.

It is amongst one of the most sought-after tourist places in Nainital. You can reach here by taxi or horse ride. There is no entry fee for the tourists.

Timings: 6 am to 5 pm.

7. Aerial Ropeway

Cable car or aerial ropeway offers stunning views of Naini Lake and Nainital city. The ride starts at Mallital and connects to the Snow Viewpoint.

It takes less than 3 minutes to cover one-way journey. There are only two cable cars to carry the tourists. You might need to book one day in advance during peak season.

Entry fee: Rs. 300 for adults, Rs 200 for children (3 to 12 yrs)

Timings: 10 am to 4 pm.

8. Nainital Zoo

Nainital Zoo, also known as Govind Ballabh Pant high altitude zoo, is located at a height of 2,100 meters on the Sher ka Danda hill in Tallital.

It is amongst one of the three high-altitude zoos in India, the other two are in Sikkim and Darjeeling.

Spread over an area of 11 acres, it houses several endangered animals like Himalayan bear, snow leopard, Tibetan wolf, Sambar deer and Himalayan civet.

You can see many types of birds here, such as red Junglefowl, white peafowl, golden pheasant, forest owlet and hill partridge.

One can walk up the hill or hire a shared jeep for reaching the zoo which costs Rs 30 per person from Mall road.

Entry fee: Rs. 50 for adults, Rs. 20 for children, Rs. 25 for a still camera, Rs. 200 for a professional video camera, No entry fee for senior citizens and differently-abled people.

Timings: 10:00 am to 4:30 pm, except for Monday and national holidays.

9. Kilbury Bird Sanctuary

Perched at an altitude of 6,510 feet, Kilbury bird sanctuary lies in Pangot village about 13 km away from Nainital town.

The sanctuary is known to have around 580 distinct bird species like Himalayan griffon, forktail, woodpecker, blue-winged minla and many more other birds.

It is also home to several mammal species including sambar deer, barking deer, Himalayan marten and masked palm civet.

The Kilbury forest area is covered with lush green forests of oak, pine and rhododendron trees.

It is a pleasant drive through the dense forests of Pangot village and the Himalaya Darshan area which offers breathtaking views of the mighty Himalayas.

10. Naina Devi Temple

Standing on the northern end of the charming Naini Lake, the Naina Devi temple is a holy place for Hindus.

Legend has it that the eyes of the Goddess Sati fell at this place when Lord Shiva was carrying her charred body after taking it out from the fire of yagna.

The temple houses statues of Goddess Kali, Lord Ganesha, Lord Hanuman and other Hindu deities.

The city of Nainital got its name from this famous Naina Devi temple. There is no entry fee to visit this place.

Timings: 6 am to 10 pm.

11. Hanuman Garhi

Situated at an altitude of 1,951 meters, the temple is dedicated to Lord Hanuman, a devotee of Lord Rama. It was built in the year 1950 by a famous saint Neem Karoli Baba.

The temple houses a huge statue of Lord Hanuman showering blessings on his devotees.

You can get a splendid view of the sunrise and sunset from the temple as it is located on the hilltop.

It is easily accessible by road and you can drive up to the temple. There is no entry fee for visiting the temple.

Timings: 5 am to 12 pm and 4 pm to 9 pm on all days.

12. Corbett Falls

Located at a distance of 25 km from Ramnagar, Corbett falls lies on the way from Corbett National Park to Nainital.

There is a short 1 km trek starting from the parking area leading to this serene falls.

The waterfall cascading down from a height of 60 feet surrounded by lush green teak wood forest offers stunning views to the visitors.

You can also see beautiful birds around like common kingfisher, Indian pied hornbill, black drongo and woodpecker.

Entry fee: Rs 50 for adults, Rs 25 for children.

Timings: 8 am to 5 pm.

13. Himalayan Botanical Garden

A very well maintained place, the Himalayan Botanical Garden is one of the must-visit tourist places in Nainital for those interested in herbal plants.

There are some saplings on display that you can buy and take back home. You can also see the butterfly museum located inside the Botanical garden.

Entry fee: Rs 20 per head

Timings: 10 am to 5 pm except for Monday

14. Land’s End

Land’s End is literally the place after which there is no land. Rested at an altitude of 2,118 meters, the Land’s End is a viewpoint to enjoy the excellent views of the Kumaon mountain range, lush valley and mango-shaped Khurpa lake or Khurpatal as locals call it.

It is one of the most famous tourist places in Nainital for photography. You can trek to this scenic spot or take a pony or taxi from the main town.

Entry fee: No fees for enjoying the pleasing views, Rs 700 – 800 for pony ride per person

15. Bhimtal

The ancient town of Bhimtal is located about 22 km away from Nainital town and lies in Nainital District. This place is named after an important character of Mahabharata, Bhima .

Bhimtal is popular for its scenic blue Bhimtal lake offering stunning views of the beautiful surroundings. Perched at a height of 1370 meters, the lake is one of the prime tourist places in Nainital to visit.

A small island located in the middle of the lake is the major crowd-puller here. The island is accessible by boat only and houses an aquarium with several species of aqua-marine creatures.

Bhimtal is also a famous spot for paragliding. You can paraglide even if you have never tried this before as there will be a guide controlling all the movements.

You can see an amazing aerial view of the town and it will literally tingle your senses after you do it.

Entry fee: Rs 100 – 200 for boat ride, Rs 800 -1500 for paragliding

How To Reach Nainital

Nainital doesn’t have an airport. The nearest domestic airport is located in Pantnagar at a distance of 65 km, roughly one hour drive from Nainital.

Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi is the nearest international airport that is well connected to the rest of the world. You can hire a private taxi from Delhi airport to reach Nainital.

Kathgodham Railway Station is the closest railway station around 34 km away from Nainital and enjoys good connectivity with important places such as Delhi, Lucknow, Agra.

Some of the popular trains halting at Kathgodham Railway Station are New Delhi-Kathgodam Shatabdi Express, Ranikhet Express and Uttaranchal Sampark Kranti Express.

Nainital is well connected to all nearby cities by road – 23 km away from Kathgodam, 55 km from Ranikhet, 63 km from Ramnagar, 275 km from Dehradun, 345 km from Delhi. Daily Bus service is also available from Delhi to Nainital and it takes about 7-8 hours.

London Marathon 2024 travel guide: Start times, route and celebration spots

The London Marathon 2024 will weave through the streets of the capital from Greenwich to Westminster on Sunday 21 April, and thousands of spectators are going to be lining the route for a glimpse of their running friends.

Over 50,000 people are expected to take on the mammoth two-foot tour of London landmarks, including Buckingham Palace, Cutty Sark and Tower Bridge.

Since the inaugural 26.2 mile event in 1981, the fundraising race has raised millions for charities each year, and, with sunshine on the forecast for now, celebrations of the charitable and physical feat will take place across the city.

Here’s everything you need to know to plan the day if you’re running or supporting this year’s London Marathon.

The London Marathon 2024 will take place on Sunday 21 April.

Exact timings for this year’s races are yet to be confirmed but staggered start times from around 8.30am are the norm, with the masses setting off in waves at 10am and all start lines closed from 11.30am.

The finish line on The Mall closes at 7.30pm and is then moved to St James’ Park until midnight.

London Marathon route

Largely unchanged since 1981, the start line for the race is in Blackheath at the top of Greenwich Park .

From here, a leg to Woolwich, jog past the Cutty Sark and stretch around Bermondsey takes runners to cross the river over Tower Bridge .

After a ring around the Isle of Dogs, it’s a relatively straight stretch along the Thames through the City of London to the Westminster finish line on The Mall.

Will there be train and tube strikes?

There is a planned overtime ban for Aslef members working for LNER on Friday 19 and Sunday 21 April (marathon day), as well as strikes on Saturday 20 April, so those travelling into London from the northeast will likely face cancellations.

Substantial road closures across the capital to make way for the race mean spectators should travel on foot or by tube – roads will reopen as and when all runners have cleared the area.

Marathon participants will receive free travel home up to 6.30pm on marathon day on the London Underground and Overground, buses and DLR.

TfL said that a modified DLR service will start at 5.30am from Tower Gateway to Lewisham so runners arrive on time to the start line.

Rail services out of London to the midlands and the northwest are also expected to be extremely busy from 6pm due to an FA Cup semi-final taking place at Wembley Stadium.

The best spots to watch the London Marathon in person

If the live BBC coverage won’t cut it and you’re coming to support from the sidelines, spectators can watch along most parts of the route, including The Highway in Wapping, where runners will pass twice.

To be in the heart of the action, the halfway point of Tower Bridge at mile 13, and the finish line at The Mall are bound to be exciting but busy. For a quieter spot to cheer, stay east and line up in Deptford or the Isle of Dogs.

Track friends and family taking part using their marathon number on the TCS London Marathon app to best position yourself to catch them on the go.

Marathon organisers advise that some areas, including those by the Cutty Sark and St James’ Park, are likely to be very busy on the day.

Five accessible viewing areas also dot the course for those with disabilities: in Cutty Sark, Canary Wharf, Rainbow Row, Tower Hill and Victoria Embankment.

Where to celebrate along the route

London has plenty of pubs and bars to quench the post-marathon thirst, whether you’ve been running or cheering.

In Greenwich, The Gipsy Moth has Cutty Sark views, The Angel in Bermondsey sits on the Thames and halfway pub, the Tower Bridge Arms, raises pints of IPA to passers-by.

Wet your palette in Wapping’s local Turner’s Old Star, ride the high at Pergola on the Wharf for city views, or refuel at Hung, Drawn & Quartered in Tower Hill with pies and ales.

At Victoria Embankment, board pub boat Tattershall Castle to cheer runners on for the final mile and savour a cold one at The Westminster Arms just before the finish line.

Once the race has been run, Inn the Park restaurant in St James’ Park is ideal for a light bite or head into Mercato Mayfair for a street food party in a restored church.

How to sign up for the London Marathon 2025

After a record number of entries signed up for the 26.2-mile race in 2024 – 578,374 applicants according to event organisers – next year’s London Marathon is bound to be another popular event.

To take on the challenge, entry is available through a ballot, international tour operators, charity spaces and athletics clubs.

The public ballot for the 2025 TCS London Marathon will open on Saturday 20 April and close the following Friday (26 April). Winners will be drawn at random and emailed in July ahead of the 27 April 2025 marathon.

Are these Pigeon Forge tourist attractions 'boring'? See where they rank

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is by far the most visited national park in the country. And it's safe to say that many of those visitors combine a trip to the natural beauty of the park with a visit to Dollywood and the other many tourist attractions available in Pigeon Forge, which, to be honest, can feel more like Las Vegas than the Smokies.

From Alcatraz East Crime Museum (back in the news for O.J. Simpson's Bronco) to Hatfield & McCoy Dinner Feud and even Goats on the Roof (which has a coaster btw), there is no shortage of places for tourists to drop their hard-earned cash.

But are they worth the investment of dollars and time? According to a recent analysis of Google reviews, quite a few ranked high on a list of "most boring tourist attractions."

Jurassic Jungle Boat Ride ranked third worst attraction in world

Solitaired, an online game site, analyzed 66.7 million Google reviews of 3,290 popular tourist attractions worldwide to determine which were the least interesting. The analysis focused on keywords such as "boring," "bored," "bore," "boredom," "tiresome," "dull," "drab," "lackluster," "lifeless," "mediocre" and "tedious."

Tennessee ranked No. 3 as the state with the most intensely boring attractions (49). And the Jurassic Jungle Boat Ride, an indoor boat adventure through an animatronic dinosaur park, was deemed the third most boring tourist attraction in the world.

The park, which has a three-star rating on Google, drew criticism for being run-down and overpriced, with one reviewer commenting, "It’s almost comical on how bad this attraction is."

"The park's theme appears far from amusement," Solitaired wrote. "According to the reviews, these dinos are ghosts of their former selves, perhaps worthy of a museum like their fossilized brethren."

Other Pigeon Forge mainstays also deemed boring

There are always going to be Debbie Downers among us . So take these rankings with a grain of salt, because even though enough reviewers enjoyed these attractions to give them an average rating of between 4.3 and 4.6, they still made the boring list.

MagiQuest, which is home to Special FX Pirate Golf, Odyssey Mirror Maze and Adventure Arcade, ranked No, 20.

Ripley's Believe It Or Not!, known nationally for its kitschy oddities on display, was No. 26.

Hatfield & McCoy Dinner Feud, which is owned by the Dolly Parton empire, was ranked No. 49.

Crave Golf Club, a miniature golf course, ranked No. 53.

TopJump Trampoline & Extreme Arena came in at No. 57.

Alcatraz East Crime Museum was No. 78.

Pigeon Forge Snow, an indoor snow center, ranked No. 83.

Pirates Voyage Dinner & Show was only somewhat boring and was ranked No. 93.

2024 NFL Draft: Former general manager's TE rankings, pro comps, landing spots, best fits for top prospects

Brock bowers stands above the rest, but according to former gm rick spielman, there is a new no. 2 te prospect.

The tight end position isn't one of the NFL's most valuable, but many of the league's top teams today seem to be well equipped with at least one who's above average to great.

Travis Kelce of the back-to-back Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs is obviously the gold standard at the position today, from a receiving perspective, while the San Francisco 49ers , the defending NFC champions, have George Kittle , a strong receiver who is an elite blocker in the run game. The emergence of 2023 second-round Sam LaPorta also helped lifted the Detroit Lions to the first division title in decades.

In the 2024 NFL Draft class, Georgia Bulldogs tight end Brock Bowers is the cream of the crop, drawing many comparisons to Kelce throughout his time in Athens, where he won two national titles in three seasons.

Who are the best of the rest at the tight position?

CBS Sports HQ NFL analyst Rick Spielman, the Minnesota Vikings general manager for 16 seasons (2006-2021) presents his analysis from the "With The First Pick" podcast episode that aired on March 22, providing a closer look on a tight end group with many different flavors. This is the fourth position group in CBS Sports' pre-draft position group evaluations with wide receivers , running backs and quarterbacks each available for enjoyment. Each prospect also includes further analysis from yours truly. Without further ado, the 2024 NFL Draft tight end class.

5. Theo Johnson (Penn State)

Height: 6-6 | Weight: 259 pounds
Accolades/notable statistics: Seven receiving TD in 2023 (T-3rd most in single season in program history)

Pro comp: Dallas Cowboys tight end Luke Schoonmaker

"Traditional Y tight end," Spielman said. "I don't think the test numbers at the combine [4.57 40-yard dash, 39.5" vertical jump, 10'5" broad jump, 7.15 three-cone drill, 4.19 20-yard shuttle] showed up on the tape. I think he is an efficient blocker. I think he is a short-to-intermediate route runner. The production, I understand Penn State's offense. I didn't think he was special with the ball in his hands after the catch. He has a large catching radius and can bring the ball in. I just didn't see those test numbers translate to what I have seen on tape. He didn't look as explosive on tape as he did at the combine."

Highest he could get drafted: Third round
Lowest he could get drafted: Fourth round

Final Thoughts: Johnson recorded 938 receiving yards and 12 receiving touchdowns on 77 catches across four seasons, but Penn State has an offense that routinely makes you question if they trust quarterback Drew Allar, a five-star recruit. The size and speed fit the part, but he isn't a dominant run blocker even with his athletic gifts. Johnson can win regularly in tight, contested-catch situations, but isn't a YAC machine. The coaching staff that selects him will have a tremendous effect on what his career looks like at the next level.

4. Cade Stover (Ohio State)

Height: 6-4 | Weight: 247 pounds
Accolades/notable statistics: 77 receptions, 982 receiving yards and 10 receiving TD in the last two seasons

Pro comp: Buffalo Bills tight end Dawson Knox

"I think this kid is a jack of all trades, master of none," Spielman said. "It's a good thing because I think he can do everything well. He has a well-rounded game. He just isn't exceptional at one thing. He can block, so he can line up as a traditional Y tight end. He was converted from linebacker to tight end in 2022, so he is still learning and growing at the position. I think he improved his route-running this year. He does have good hands for a guy who was on the defensive side of the ball. I think he is more than athletic enough. I think he can play H, a traditional Y. I think some teams will look at him as a fullback because of his aggressiveness and finish as a run blocker. I'm giving him a compliment as a really good football player across the board who doesn't do anything exceptional, but does everything very well."

Lowest he could get drafted: Fourth round

Final Thoughts: Cade Stover's development at tight end has been consistently upward. After entering college as a linebacker, he transitioned to the tight end position. In his first season really operating at the position, he caught five passes for 76 yards. Since 2022, he has produced more than some tight ends do in four years with regular playtime: seven receptions, 982 receiving yards and 10 receiving touchdowns (five each season). Stover does a good job at picking up speed throughout his route, and he is a plus as a run blocker. The potential for growth is high given he still very young at the position. He could pay dividends years down the road for whoever drafts him.

"The Alabama game put him on the map [five catches for 114 yards]," Spielman said. "I don't doubt his receiving skills, but I don't think he is a blocker. He is a receiving tight end only. He is a good athlete. I've always thought his speed was good, not great [4.69 40-yard dash at the combine]. I think he is below average in pass protection. I think this guy is going to be a receiving only kind of guy."

Final Thoughts: Ja'Tavion Sanders is one of the quickest players off the line of scrimmage among the 2024 NFL Draft tight end class. He is a middle-of-the-field weapon who excels at boxing out defenders with his long catch radius. Sanders' blocking games needs plenty of work, which is why he isn't higher on this list. For teams who are specifically looking for a receiving threat at the tight end position, they can't do much better than Sanders.

2. Ben Sinnott (Kansas State)

"This kid has a huge chip on his shoulder. He was a walk-on at Kansas State. Overcame that," Spielman said. "When you talk to him, when you watch him play, he's always out to prove people wrong. I think he'll continue to do that in the NFL with everybody that has doubts on this kid. Multiple position player: H-back, fullback, tight end. Really like him as a really good player. Tested well at the combine. Ran in the 4.6's [4.68 40-yard dash], 40-inch vertical jump. All the athletic test numbers I think took people back by how explosive he was in some of those test numbers. I think he is going to come out and carve out a role right away. ... I think he's a little underrated right now, and he could be a surprise contributor next year for whoever selects him."

Final Thoughts: Sinnott is the biggest riser in this class at the tight end position between his strong combine performance and how he showcased his versatility in 2023 while registering career highs in catches (49), receiving yards (575) and receiving touchdowns (six). The route running is solid, and he has the agility to separate against man coverage on any route plus the physicality and burst to create yards after the catch. Sinnott may need to bulk up in order to win routinely as a blocker at the next level, but there is a lot to work with here. He would thrive with a team that runs a Shanahan-style offense, one that highly values tight end versatility.

"Yes [Bowers is the consensus top tight end prospect]," Spielman said. "No [I don't question his toughness after returning to Georgia for the Auburn game after having tightrope surgery on his ankle]. Bowers is a special prospect. He is the only for sure first-round tight end."

Best team fit: New York Jets (Bowers' first potential landing spot at 10th overall)

Final Thoughts: Bowers is one of the best tight end prospects in years, and his abilities as a pass-catcher are such that it wouldn't be crazy for him to officially change positions to become a wide receiver in the NFL. No tight end had more catches, receiving yards or receiving touchdowns than Bowers during his collegiate career from 2021-2023. There were games in which he single-handedly carried the Bulldogs to victory like he did in their game at Auburn in 2023 when he went off for 157 yards and a touchdown on eight catches. Bowers' ability to feast with the ball in his hands after the catch is phenomenal. It's so good that he could take end-around handoffs for 75-yard rushing touchdowns.

Bowers is the only player in college football to accumulate 25 or more receiving touchdowns and five or more rushing touchdowns in a career since West Virginia All-American Tavon Austin did so from 2009-2012. That's elite, explosive company, especially for a tight end. He can be the hub of a team's passing game like a Travis Kelce.
