25 Qualifying Questions to Help You Nail Your Clients' Vacation Plans

One of the most important skills a travel advisor can master is qualifying clients. Qualifying helps to not only match clients with the right destination or product, but also enables advisors to plan vacations that truly meet their clients' needs and desires.

Qualifying questions are the best sales tool advisors have, Melinda Fortunato, owner of Best Travel, a Nexion member agency, told Travel Market Report.

"Our job is to specialize in our clients," Fortunato said. "We really have to know them very, very well in order to give them the experience they want and for them to come back and keep using us and refer other people."

Using a series of qualifying questions can help advisors understand their clients' preferences – what they like and don't like, travel goals, budget, but can also go much deeper.

"It really allows a deep understanding of ultimately why they're going on vacation and what they're looking for," Fortunato said. "Being able to really know what it is they're looking for and those emotions that they want when they go on vacation … Those kinds of things, that's really so important to know."

Qualifying also lets advisors who work with destination management companies or FIT tour operators to help their partners do a better job.

"DMCs and tour operators are so busy," Fortunato added. "We need to make sure that we respect their time and if we are filtering our clients and vetting them well, then we can send only good quality clients and all of the information that they need to be able to help us create a great trip. That's important for us as professionals as well.

When it comes to how to present qualifying questions to clients, advisors have a couple of choices. Some prefer to use a questionnaire, while others prefer to have a 20- to 30-minute phone call or Zoom meeting. Which you decide to use will depend on your workflow, your communication style of choice, and your clients' preferences.

"For myself, a phone call is magic," Fortunato told TMR. "Nowadays, people feel like it's a really big deal if you take the time for a phone call… They can hear in your voice your expertise, they can hear your interest, and that you're genuine and sincere about taking this trip seriously for them."

Marcie Muensterman, owner of a Cruise Planners franchise said much the same about doing Zoom meetings.

"This allows us to see each other, know that I am truly listening and take that time to give all of my time and energy to them," she said. "I guide them through a conversation that allows for connection beyond the vacation so they can also get to know my sense of humor, do we have anyone in common, what do we have in common personality wise or life wise. Creating a connection allows them to loosen up and be more vulnerable with what this vacation may really mean to them."

How to travel around the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore: A look at the traffic impact and alternate routes

BALTIMORE -- The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore early on the morning of March 26  led to a major traffic impact for the region and cut off a major artery into and out of the port city. 

Drivers are told to prepare for extra commuting time until further notice.

Alternate routes after Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse

Maryland transit authorities quickly put detours in place for those traveling through Dundalk or the Curtis Bay/Hawkins Point side of the bridge. The estimated 31,000 who travel the bridge every day will need to find a new route for the foreseeable future. 

The outer loop I-695 closure shifted to exit 1/Quarantine Road (past the Curtis Creek Drawbridge) to allow for enhanced local traffic access. 

The inner loop of I-695 remains closed at MD 157 (Peninsula Expressway). Additionally, the ramp from MD 157 to the inner loop of I-695 will be closed. 

Alternate routes are I-95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) or I-895 (Baltimore Harbor Tunnel) for north/south routes. 

Commercial vehicles carrying materials that are prohibited in the tunnel crossings, including recreation vehicles carrying propane, should plan on using I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) between Essex and Glen Burnie. This will add significant driving time.

Where is the Francis Scott Key Bridge? 

The Key Bridge crosses the Patapsco River, a key waterway that along with the Port of Baltimore serves as a hub for East Coast shipping. 

The bridge is the outermost of three toll crossings of Baltimore's Harbor and the final link in Interstate 695, known in the region as the Baltimore Beltway, which links Baltimore and Washington, D.C. 

The bridge was built after the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel reached capacity and experienced heavy congestion almost daily, according to the MDTA. 

Tractor-trailer inspections

Tractor-trailers that now have clearance to use the tunnels will need to be checked for hazardous materials, which are not permitted in tunnels, and that could further hold up traffic. 

The MDTA says vehicles carrying bottled propane gas over 10 pounds per container (maximum of 10 containers), bulk gasoline, explosives, significant amounts of radioactive materials, and other hazardous materials are prohibited from using the Fort McHenry Tunnel (I-95) or the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (I-895).  

Any vehicles transporting hazardous materials should use the western section of I-695 around the tunnels, officials said.

The 2024 men's NCAA Tournament is down to the final weekend of action. Saturday's Final Four games will set the opponents for the national championship game April 8.

This year's Final Four includes two No. 1 seeds - the Purdue Boilermakers and UConn Huskies - as well as a No. 4 seed in the Alabama Crimson Tide and the No. 11 seed NC State Wolfpack . This year marks the second time in the last four years in which a No. 11 seed's made the Final Four, as UCLA did so in 2021 .

The Huskies have a chance to repeat as NCAA Tournament champions and become the first program since Florida in 2006-07 to do so. But will they be the first team in seven years to make consecutive national championship games? Here's what experts are predicting:

Tony Garcia says: "NC State is on an absolutely incredible run. A team that would’ve missed the tournament, it became the first to win five games in five days in the ACC tournament to earn an automatic berth. Then, it upset 6-seed Texas Tech and outlasted red-hot 14-seed Oakland in overtime. The Wolfpack then easily beat 2-seed Marquette, before dispatching conference foe and in-state rival Duke to go to the Final Four. Its a memorable stretch, much like that of coach Jim Valvano’s 1983 national championship team, but it doesn’t end with the same Disney finish."
