Witness it for a day, strolling through the medieval alleys and eating good food, or stay the night to experience the village at its quietest.

Here are all your hotel options in Motovun.

Tip: The cobbled streets have become quite slippery over the years, so make sure to wear good shoes when exploring Motovun.

1. Walk along the Castle Walls

Motovun has made an impressive stronghold throughout history as it sits enthroned on top of a hill, peering out over the neighboring landscapes. Legend even says that the town was built by giants. The village boasts two rings of fortress walls around the old center, a testament to its past and the perfect spot to soak up the incredible panoramic views.

motovun croatia things to do

Take some time to tread the ramparts, looking out over lush vineyards as you listen to the crickets and town noises. These historical walls make up one of the best-preserved fortresses in Istria, with the citadel at the very top being the oldest (12th century).

Opening times & Entrance Fee: The city walls are open between 10 AM and 7 PM and cost about 5 euros to enter.

2. Explore the Village

One of the best things to do in Motovun is lazily roaming through the small medieval town without a destination in mind. The old center is incredible, full of history and clunked-together houses along narrow stone streets typical of the region. The buildings here are covered in stunning details and wall art, asking for a picture at every corner.

Amidst the charming medieval alleys, you’ll find the town square. Linger in one of the small gardens or enjoy a cup of coffee on one of the terraces with views over the valley. St. Stephen’s Church stands here as well, a landmark of the town tucked between Venetian -style houses. You can climb up the bell tower of the 13th-century church and enjoy some stunning views over the roofs of the old town.

Tip: The best time to visit Motovun is between May and September when the weather is the best. However, the town makes a great destination all year round.

Tucked away in the surrounding green hills, about 40 minutes from Motovun, lies the world’s smallest village, Hum. Its petite charm unfolds through just two streets, each lined with cobblestones and a few cute shops. Decorative bicycles stand out front, contrasting with the beautiful green leaves that cover the village’s houses.

How to Visit Motovun, Croatia

Motovun lies amidst the rolling hills of Istria in the north of Croatia . To get there, there are a few options.

The easiest way to visit Motovun would be with your own car. Renting a car in Croatia allows you to make up your own schedule and see many gems in Istria. From Zagreb, it’s 3 hours driving, 1 hour 15 minutes from Rijeka, and just 1 hour from Pula .

We recommend to rent a car in Croatia through Sunny Cars with free cancellation and insurance included. Book your rental car here .

how to visit motovun croatia by car

Note, however, that you can’t enter the inner town of Motovun by car unless your accommodation lets you in through the gates. Generally, you need to be a resident to drive through the small archway. Luckily, there are two public parking lots near the entrance. One lies at the bottom of the hill, and one halfway up (in blue lines). The one at the top is more expensive and fills up quickly, so we recommend parking at the bottom and taking the shuttle up.

Andrea Antico Square

The Main Gate leads to Citadel, the oldest part of the town, and a historic core. Passing through the gate you will find yourself on the upper square – Andrea Antico Square, which represents the main square of Motovun. On the main square, you will find the Parish Church of St. Stephen , built in the 17th century in the spirit of Mannerism. Next to the church stands the bell tower of Motovun. The 27-meters-high tower was built in the 13th century as the town’s main tower and observation post. Only later it was converted into a bell tower. On the opposite side, along the wall, extends the Municipal Palace , the best-preserved Romanesque public building in Croatia.

Josef Ressel Square

While the east side of the Municipal Palace surrounds the main town square, the west side of the palace surrounds the Josef Ressel Square, squeezed between the two city gates. At the very edge of Josef Ressel Square lies the town lodge –  Loggia , which was built at the beginning of the 17th century on the walls of the defensive tower. It was used mainly for trials, but also for performing some public affairs. Today, loggia serves as a beautiful lookout point with a view of the Mirna river valley.

Passage through the town gate

Marzito Tip

Although the entrance to the town is free, the inner part of the walls can only be visited if purchasing a ticket . For an entrance fee of 25 kunas (app. 3,50 euro), you are welcome to walk on the walls and to have the best view of the Motovun surroundings.

Truffle Hunt

The dense Motovun Forest is the world’s largest white truffle habitat . White truffles are very highly esteemed and are the most valuable on the market. They are also very rare. But, here in Motovun, you can try your luck in hunt of this pricy specialty. There are many tours available in Motovun and other towns of Istria. Apart from hunting truffles with professional guides and trained dogs , the tours usually include aperitive and a meal made of the truffles you find yourself!

Wineries near Motovun

Central Istria is full of wine-growing hills. The most famous wines produced in the area are Malvasia, Teran, Merlot, and Muscat. The history of wine in Istria is a story that lasts for almost 2000 years since the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius brought the first vine to the peninsula. Numerous wineries offer wine tastings and visits to their vineyards and cellars.

One of the most prominent local wineries is Kozlović Winery , located 30 minutes by car from Motovun. It is a family winery with a long history , that has been producing the best Istrian Malvasia for generations. The beautiful estate was updated in 2012 when a new cellar with a modern winery was made. Today, the Kozlović Winery’s cellar is one of the most attractive and modern cellars in the region. The winery offers several programs with visits to the cellar and tastings of house wines and other local products . Apart from wine, the winery also produces rakija (fruit brandy made in Croatia and region) and olive oil.

Buzet is a lovely little town placed on a hill above the valley of the Mirna River . The town is known as the town of truffle , unique fruit that grows on the peninsula. Truffles can mainly be found in the dense forests surrounding the medieval towns of Motovun and Buzet. There’s a possibility to try your luck in the truffle hunt with the help of trained dogs and a professional guide. Buzet is also home to Aura Distillery , a company that produces exclusive products such as brandies, jams, and other traditional products. Apart from the shop where you can buy these products, you can also visit the distillery and get to know the process behind the products. Tastings are also included in the tour.

The city of Rovinj is one of the most beautiful cities in the Adriatic Sea. The old town, which is nowadays a popular tourist destination and a monument of culture , was first situated on an island, which as later connected to the mainland and turned into a peninsula. The old town of Rovinj is a typical Mediterranean town , crowded with narrow stone houses, narrow streets and small squares, all of which make it a lovely and picturesque town it is today. The Church of St. Euphemia dominates the peninsula, along with its bell tower, as it rises above the houses and the roofs.

Panoramic view of the colorful houses lined up by the waterfront

Another historical town on the Istrian coast and another popular tourist destination is Poreč . The city of Poreč is most widely known for the 6th-century Euphrasian Basilica , one of the several UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Croatia. Alongside the magnificent basilica complex, there are several other sights in the historical center of Poreč that are worth a visit. The inevitable Mediterranean architecture and traditional Istrian restaurants and souvenir shops are yours to be explored.

Pula is the largest, and, architectonically speaking, the most interesting town in Istria. The city of Pula is one of the oldest Croatian cities on the coast. Inhabited ever since the prehistoric times, Pula became an important Roman colony and port on the Adriatic Sea at the time of the Roman Empire. Until this day, the historical center of Pula houses several Roman buildings , all in perfect condition. Some of those are even among the best examples of Roman architecture in the world, such as the famous Arena Pula , a beautiful Roman amphitheater.

Brijuni National Park

From the town of Fažana sails out the boat to one of the most beautiful sites in Croatia – the Brijuni National Park . The Brijuni is a group of islands famous for its natural beauty and for being the Summer Residence of President Marshal Tito. Today, the Brijuni National Park houses several hotels, a safari park with exotic animals, several archeological sites from different historical periods, a museum and an educational center. The ticket for the national park includes a boat ride, touristic train, and a local guide.

Things to do in Motovun Croatia: A Truffle-tastic Medieval Hilltop Town

Posted on Last updated: March 11, 2024

I’m embarrassed that it took me five summers in the country to make it to Motovun Croatia . This little Medieval town is truly like that of a fairytale. It has a walled fort, perched in an almost spiral-like formation around the top of a hill, smack-dab in the middle of the Istrian countryside in Croatia’s Northwest, and there are lots of things to do in Motovun .

If you haven’t visited Istria, you are truly missing out on part of the heart of Croatia and a truly different personality of the country, which is ordinarily known for its warm, clear water and island-dotted Dalmatian coast.

things to do in Motovun croatia: the truffle capital of Istria

But, Istria presents a totally different side to Croatia (apart from the Zagreb area, which is a third side to the country – read my Zagreb post for more). Istria is often compared to Tuscany, and with great reason. The luscious green hills seem to endlessly roll into the distance, with small colorful settlements perched on forested hills here and there, getting smaller and smaller up to the horizon.

Motovun Croatia is truly the best expression of Istria – with the most scenic little town overlooking the beautiful countryside, and a food and wine culture to truly rival its Italian counterpart. There are lots of things to do in Motovun – and most of them do involve food and wine, but who’s complaining?!

Motovun Croatia – Getting There

Here are the best ways to get to Motovun. Check out the other best places to visit in Croatia (essentially a travel guide) to plan your trip.

Getting to Motovun Croatia By Air

As I said, Motovun is right in the middle of the rectangular Istrian peninsula. It’s about an hour north of Pula, a much larger coastal town on the southern tip of the peninsula. Pula is the nearest large airport that is internationally and easily accessible. Check flights to Pula here !

Rijeka is about an hour east of Motovun, and also has an airport you can fly into.

Getting to Motovun By Car

This is the preferred option and the way that I got to Motovun on my Balkans road trip this year. You can rent cars the most cheaply at Sixt Croatia (which allows you to cross borders), or you can compare rates of all companies on rentalcars.com if you are staying only in Croatia. I think Sixt still had the best deals though, and they have offices in all main cities – Split, Zagreb, Pula, Rijeka, etc.

Motovun By Bus

Pula and Rijeka are accessible by bus from pretty much all of Croatia. Motovun however is a bit more difficult. You can get a bus connection Pazin from either city, and Motovun is another 20km away by taxi. This is why a rental car is preferable!

Motovun Day Tours

Your final option getting to Motovun Croatia would be to take a day tour. There are lots of bus tours through Istria from Pula, Rovinj, and other places in Istria that will visit Motovun, Grožnjan, the coastal town of Poreč, and more. I recommend this tour here.

Currency in Motovun Croatia

In Croatia, the currency is the kuna. It does vary, but you’re looking at about 6-7 kuna to the USD, 5 to the AUD, and about 8 to the GBP. Some places accept euros, but most don’t. It would be wise to withdraw/exchange some kuna if you can.

How Long to Spend in Motovun

It’s really tiny, so 1-2 nights would be totally fine here to do all the things I have mentioned below! A day tour would also be plenty if you’re short on time.

Things to do in Motovun Croatia

Here are the activities and places to visit in Motovun you can’t miss.

Truffle Hunting Tour

Perhaps the most popular/famous/well-known things to do in Motovun involve truffles, and more specifically, hunting them. What is a truffle, you may ask? Well, they’re pretty much the most expensive fungus ever to grow underground. Truffles are a delicious delicacy, and are found all over the place here and taste amazing on basically anything.

An important Motovun fact is that the LARGEST TRUFFLE EVER FOUND was found here – well, in the Motovun forest at the base of the main hill. That has brought the region even more fame, and it’s best known for the truffles found in the extremely prolific forest outside the town.

So, what does truffle hunting entail? Sadly, humans can’t really find truffles themselves. Our sense of smell isn’t strong enough. You need specially trained dogs to run through the extremely dense forest, following their noses toward one of the most expensive things that grows underground – truffles!

How does one find a dog to go truffle hunting with? Well, you sign up for a tour of course! There are a few main truffle brands in town, and some of them run their own truffle hunting and tasting tours. This is the most cultural and immersive thing to do in the area, and what I most highly recommend to do in Motovun.

The thing is, most of the companies who run these tours require booking in advance. Tourism has not quite reached Motovun as much as the rest of Croatia yet, and the business is not so booming that you can rock up and get on a tour just like that.

Try checking out Truffle Hunting Croatia for local tours, and Karlic Tartufi /  Miro Tartufi for family-led tours. Send them an email ahead of time, and you should have no problem getting on a tour.

But, if you want to save trouble and book in advance on Viator and have hotel pick-up included on a top-rated tour with local experts, book this tour here.

Explore Old Town + Sample Oil, Wine, Truffle, and More

To get to the hilltop town, you must drive or take a bus from the bottom. Public busses regularly run up and down from the base of the Motovun hill, which has a large parking lot as the hill can’t accommodate too many cars or any tour busses. Tickets for this bus are about 20kn, and they run all day.

Once you get to the top of the hill, you’ll have arrived at the main street of the tiny walled town. There’s basically only one street, so it’ll be hard to get lost! As you walk upwards towards the top, you’ll begin to pass loads of small tasting rooms and stands (among other tiny souvenir shops), which will be selling the main products of Motovun – wine, rakija (a Croatian spirit), different kinds of olive oil, and different kinds of truffle paste and truffle-flavored things.

Pop into as many of these shops as you like – you might even (read: probably will) find something you’d like to take back to your accommodation or back home as a gift for friends and family. We found some wine to bring back for dinner, and I brought a variety pack of truffle paste for my family!

Oh, and did I mention the views?! The views from the old town are unbelievable and very photo-worthy. With the medieval buildings in the foreground and rolling hills in the back, you can’t go wrong.

Cuisine/Wine to Look Out For:

  • Karlic and Zigante  are two of the main truffle brands that are widely known and loved, so you can’t go wrong sampling/buying these.
  • Malvazija and Teran are two types of grape/wine that are local to this area. Make sure to try some!
  • Fakin is a winery close to town where you can try wine, and also has a sampling shop and restaurant in town.

Walk the Old Town Walls

Like many old Croatian (and European in general) towns, Motovun has a set of main city walls, and you can walk on top of them. Just past the main square of town, you’ll come to a gate that leads to the walls. If you go inside and pay a small fee of 25kn, you’ll receive a ticket to walk around the top of the walls.

Unfortunately, it’s no Dubrovnik , but the Motovun walls are beautiful and full of character just the same. You’ll get the best views in town and get to look back out over the small town you just explored on the way up. You’ll see all the forests where the truffle hunting takes place, and even more colorful towns in the distance.

Motovun Cultural Education Center (Small Museum)

At the base of the hill, you’ll find a small museum within a courtyard of a hotel. Here, you can learn a little bit more about how the old town walls of Motovun were built many centuries ago.

You’ll learn more about the fact that it was part of the Venetian empire for centuries (hence why you’ll hear some Italian even in Motovun Croatia!) and how they also discovered more ancient Roman (read: VERY old) ruins here. Some ruins are on display in the museum, and some are in one of the main archways of the town. You can’t miss it!

Motovun Film Festival

Motovun is also famous for its annual film festival which shows independent and small films from across Europe. It’s extremely popular, and draws travelers from near and far as one of the best things to do in Motovun.

Make sure to be aware of this as you travel to Motovun Croatia. If you plan your travel dates to visit the film festival (which is usually late July/early August), you should book far in advance because it will be crowded. Or, plan to avoid the crowds and choose different dates. They even put up a campground at the base of the hill for the festival!

Where to Eat in Motovun

One of the main and most important things to do in the truffle capital is to EAT, of course – and eat well. There are a few top-rated restaurants in Motovun, all of which will meet all of your truffle-rich desires. Here are my faves:

Fakin Winery/Fakin Restaurant

Fakin winery is located just about a 5 minute drive from the base of Motovun Hill, right next to a lovely airbnb I stayed in once. You can visit the winery at any time for a tasting if you are so inclined in trying some Istrian Wine.

However, once in town, you’ll notice the Fakin restaurant along the main cobblestone road with a perfect view out over the Valley. This is where Fakin wine and Motovun food come together! I recommend sharing a few white and black truffle-inspired dishes at sunset, and watching the sun disappear over the hills in the distance.

Zigante Restaurant

This is another top-rated restaurant just outside of Motovun. If you don’t mind a short drive/adventure to another small town, you won’t be disappointed.

Situated within the old town walls, Pod Voltom will present you with an incredible view and even more incredible food. Make sure, again, to try plenty of truffle. The meat is to-die-for also.

Where to Stay in Motovun Croatia

We stayed a bit out of the city in Motovun, in an Airbnb right next to the Fakin winery tasting rooms (which seemed too big of a coincidence to pass up)!

If you have a car, Motovun could be a great place to stay a bit farther outside the city in an apartment or villa with a pool/view and to have a bit more of a getaway and look out over hills or vineyards. However, if not, there are plenty of options right amongst it all in the city. Here are some options:

Vacation Rental: 4BR Villa with a private pool among the vineyards is awesome for a remote location for groups. For something small, quaint, and central, rent this studio with a view. Hotel: Hotel Kastel is the BEST hotel around, its a cute boutique spot in a good location

Best Photo Spots in Motovun

Although photos are great from the top of the hill itself, some of the best photos that capture the essence of Motovun are actually from a bit farther away.

There are lots of vineyards near the main road heading south from Motovun. Pull over behind one to get a glimpse of the colorful hilltop fortress behind grape vines. There’s a wonderful viewpoint of Motovun from the town of Vižinada (pictured in vertical pin image below) if you are driving out towards Slovenia.

Where to Travel from Motovun

There are lots of other places to see in Istria! Here are a few places you could take a bus or road trip from Motovun.

Grožnjan

You can also visit Grožnjan, which is known as a sort of mini-Motovun as Korcula is known as a Mini-Dubrovnik. Grožnjan is a similar hilltop fortressed medieval town, yet, you guessed it, smaller!

Poreč is a gorgeous Istrian walled town on the water. It’s not extremely close to Motovun but would be worth checking out if you’ve got spare time and a car. If you don’t, this tour visits Poreč, Grožnjan, and Motovun all in one day.

Complete travel guide to Motovun Croatia - in the heart of 'the Tuscany of Croatia,' the Istrian peninsula. Explore the medieval walled hilltop town, taste local wine, and eat LOTS of truffles! #croatia #motovun #Istria

As I mentioned above, Pula is one of the larger Istrian cities along the southern coast. It’s known for having an extremely well-preserved ancient Roman coliseum and very lively streets on a summer night.

Krk is Croatia’s largest island, but actually evades the general tourist route. It’s gorgeous and far less busy than other places in the country. Check out what to do in Krk here!

If you’re heading south, Rijeka could also be a great stopover city. It’s quite a large and hilly coastal city with a lovely old town and accommodations.

We went straight into Slovenia from Motovun on our Balkans Road Trip. You can drive or bus straight to the capital, Ljubljana, or you can stop off at Predjama castle and/or the Postojna caves along the way for some extra iconic Slovenian points of interest.

If you aren’t quite done with the coast but want to head north, Piran is a beach town on the only tiny snippet of Slovenia that reaches the coast. Check out my freestyle Slovenia itinerary here.

Well, I can’t possibly think of more to say about Motovun Croatia. Do you have any questions?! Drop them below, and don’t forget to Pin!

  • agnomarialisette 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles A Trip to Croatia Me and my colleagues stayed at Zagreb for almost 6 days. Since day 1, we enjoyed much of Croatia from its weather to its really delicious foods! Wandering every night at the city center with a cold breeze is very relaxing too. But before leaving this very beautiful town of Zagreb, we were given a chance to visit this well-known natural park of Plitviće. Christian, from Sit 'n' trip, drove us to the park and did helped us enter since we forgot our vouchers which is needed for the tour. He's punctual, courteous and very nice plus a good looking person. Maybe we won't make it without him. All thanks to Christian! As we enter, we really enjoyed what we saw. The lakes, falls and streams were extremely beautiful! Can't help but smile and take pictures from every corner. Dommy, our tour guide was also accomodating. He made our tour comfortable. He let us know different kind of behind stories of the park. All in all, it was fun and satisfying. One memorable experience from croatia. Hoping we'll be back to this place again. Family run business. Very responsive to my e-mails and we were given pictures of the drivers an their automobiles + Mobil’s which I used several times to help coordinate pickups and locations. The drivers couldn’t have been nicer. “ We have all day, where would you like to stop.” Was a typical response. We were picked up at dockside in Budapest and taken to our hotel in Zagreb. 3 night stay and on to Split. Same there and then to Dubrovnik. Worked perfectly for us. Would recommend. The first contact we had with one of the representatives was already surprising. With the little information, we gave to the guys in Sit'n'Trip, they managed to set-up a pretty amusing trip. So we landed at Vienna Airport and was asking for a tour of the Vienna. Sit'n'Trip has set us up with one very kind and caring driver Thomas, who waited for us at the arrivals with my name on the board. There were cold beverages in the vehicle and even a WiFi hotspot. After the pick-up, we went to the Vienna center where an extremely polite and knowledgeable local guide Stephan took us around the Vienna showing us everything there is to see and more. He even showed us an amazing restaurant which we could never find if it wasn't for him. All in all, we were really satisfied with the service we got and definitely recommend to anyone that's going to be traveling around Europe. We finally found a place where you can easily and securely book your whole trip without worrying about how everything will turn out. Read more Written 31 March 2019

20 great things to do in Motovun

Discover the best things to do in Motovun with our insider’s tips on sightseeing, dining and drinking

Motovun is one of Istria’s most beautiful and best-preserved medieval hilltop settlements. It’s best known for its film festival , which transforms this otherwise sleepy town into a cultural and party hub for one week every summer, a cross between Sundance and Glastonbury. Surrounded by truffle-rich forest, which provides the key ingredient for top local restaurants here and in nearby Livade, Motovun stands atop a 277-metre hill overlooking the Mirna Valley. Sunsets are spectacular, as are the views from the main bar in town, the Montona Gallery.

The best things to do in Motovun

Do the Parenzana

1.  Do the Parenzana

Revived in modern times as a cycling and hiking trail, the Parenzana was a narrow-gauge railway in the Habsburg era. Built in 1902, it ran from Trieste in Italy, through the Istrian interior before terminating down the coast at Poreč. After the Habsburg Empire collapsed in 1918, it was overseen by Istria’s new occupiers, Italy, but fell into disrepair and was closed in 1935. Neglected for decades, it was revived section by section after Croatian independence. Now it is used for panoramic walks and bike rides, the route taking in picturesque Motovun, Buje and Grožnjan around Istria’s hilltop landscape.

Enjoy a romantic meal at Pod Voltom

2.  Enjoy a romantic meal at Pod Voltom

  • price 2 of 4

In the historic heart of Motovun, with an elevated terrace overlooking the rolling Istrian countryside and an interior of bare brick, candlelight and a blazing fireplace, Pod Voltom is the most prominent restaurant in town but also the most intimate. Martina and Benjamin run a tight ship, in operation since 1991, but the dining experience is friendly and relaxed. The menu is, of course, Istria-focused, truffles with many dishes, maneštra soup, fuži pasta, game and asparagus, while the wines come courtesy of Arman, Kozlović and Matošević.

Take a spa break

3.  Take a spa break

Once selling itself on its location in the historic centre of Motovun and its reassuringly traditional appearance, blending in with the Italianate buildings around this pretty square, the Hotel Kaštel took the wise step of investing in a top-quality spa facility . Guests and non-guests alike can relax in a Cleopatra’s bath of milk and honey, enjoy a body scrub and facial in warm lavender oil, sample wine or truffle therapy treatments or go for a classic hot-stone massage. Those are just a few of the attractions on offer – you are probably just as well opting for a detox package or spa day. There’s a pool, too, with hydro jets, the outdoor section open to non-residents in summer.

Experience Istria’s Sundance

4.  Experience Istria’s Sundance

The live piano that accompanied Aki Kaurismäki’s silent movie Juha in August 1999 ushered in a groundbreaking annual event that has transformed this hilltop community every summer since. Back then, a few thousand gathered in a renovated theatre that had been closed for decades. Now the Motovun Film Festival attracts some 40,000 visitors, who descend upon this little town for five days every July, sleeping at a campsite set up for the event, sleeping in their own cars, sleeping wherever they fall. Star guests such as Vanessa Redgrave and Ken Russell are provided with more comfortable accommodation as some 100 films are screened – the best winning the annual Propeller award – in two indoor and two outdoor locations. The party goes on non-stop with live music and dancing, independent filmmakers mingling with producers, actors and festivalgoers.

Stroll in a protected natural forest

5.  Stroll in a protected natural forest

Just outside Motovun, near the natural spa waters of Istarske toplice, Motovunska šuma is a small area of forest protected by Natura Histrica, the same body responsible for Brijuni National Park and Učka nature reserve. The Venetians were the first to single out this particular pocket of woodland in Istria’s verdant hinterland, partly because of its particular beauty, partly because the European oaks so prevalent here provided such perfect wood for shipbuilding and wine barrels. Fed by a tributary of the Mirna, the forest here also features white poplars, hornbeam and lowland ash. From mid-summer until autumn, the best time to visit, the bright purple blossoms of clematis viticella provide vivid colour and attract hosts of swallowtail butterflies.

Sip a sundowner

6.  Sip a sundowner

Once a ‘bistro’ now a money-spinning ‘pizzeria’ the Montona Gallery hasn’t really changed all that much. It’s still the main bar in Motovun, the meeting place for gallery owners, expat residents, artists and artisans, a hive of lively chatter until way after midnight. For most visitors, though, the Montona Gallery means one thing: its terrace, overlooking the historic city walls and the rolling Istrian landscape beyond. Time it right, and you’ll also see a bright orange sunset slowly melt below the horizon, as one glass of finest Istrian Malvasia turns into two.

Slice into Istrian ox

7.  Slice into Istrian ox

Now considered a rare delicacy, boškarin meat comes from the specific long-horned Istrian cattle of the same name. A beast of burden for generations, the boškarin ox was rapidly going the way of the dodo when farmers turned to motorised vehicles from the 1960s onwards. By the 1990s, there were a few hundred left in existence. Like the regional revival of the wine and olive oil industries, so the boškarin has been enjoying a comeback, farmed for its fine meat which is now sold across Croatia. Naturally, it’s best eaten in situ, such as at the restaurant of the Hotel Kaštel in the heart of Motovun. Here at the Palladio , named after the architect thought to have created Sv Stjepan church nearby, you can find starters of boškarin carpaccio or the house spread of Kris, a boškarin -truffle mix. Boškarin also shows up with home-made noodles and rocket, or as a meatloaf in the main courses. While you’re here, you may as well sample some of the finest desserts in town, namely pears in Teran wine or the home-made apple pie with cinnamon.

Paraglide over Motovun

8.  Paraglide over Motovun

Starting up in May, local outdoor adventure company Paragliding Tandem Istra offer four kinds of soaring jaunts over the Motovun countryside. Standard ones take place in tandem with an experienced instructor, hence the name, but you can choose a basic-level flight of 15-20 minutes or one of around two hours. For those keen to learn more, there are courses lasting a day or a whole week, each requiring at least two participants.

Walk the ancient walls

9.  Walk the ancient walls

From the vantage point of the sturdy walls enclosing Motovun’s historic centre, it is said that you can see all four corners of Istria. Certainly, the Venetians knew what they were doing when they built them as defensive fortifications in the late 1200s. Note the city gates as you walk alongside, created in Gothic or Renaissance styles over four centuries. With all the ramparts intact, and you still can do a complete circuit, perhaps rewarding yourself with a drink at the Caffe Bar Bistro Montona Gallery afterwards.

Sleep at a luxury family winery

10.  Sleep at a luxury family winery

  • Recommended

Just outside Motovun at Kaldir, the Benvenuti family of Livio, Albert and Nikola grow three grape varieties, Istrian Malvasia, Teran and Muscat, on south-facing vineyards. This sandy soil produces a honey, fruity wine, best sampled when aged in the barrel for 18 months to create Muscat or Malvasia San Salvatore. But Benvenuti is not only about wine sampling – the villa here is hired out to discerning guests, the fireplace roaring in winter, the pool surrounded by sunloungers in summer. At least half a dozen guests may stay at any one time, making this the perfect choice for a getaway celebration with friends or family, wine essential to the party, of course.

Explore local history

11.  Explore local history

With no city museum to speak of, Motovun hides its history in strange nooks and crannies – it’s not even certain who built the main church, although an expert can quickly detect that it’s Venetian. And what of the locals, who worked the land for generations, tending the hillside vineyards and hunting in the surrounding forests? The easiest way to explore local history is to take a wander around Motovun’s main cemetery, set at the bottom of Vladimira Gortana, named after an Istrian freedom fighter from the 1920s. Stroll around the graves, most with a portrait photograph of the occupant, and you’ll soon see how so many of the local populace were of peasant stock, with Italian family names. Dates also play an important role – the greater number of Slavic names after the 1950s reflected the post-war population exchange that saw families uproot and head to Italy.

Zip around on a Vespa

12.  Zip around on a Vespa

One of the most romantic tours on offer in and around Motovun is a day trip on a Vespa. Zipping past olive groves and vineyards, your guide takes you along roads with the most stunning views, stopping at a local konoba for lunch and sampling truffles and wine on the way. Tours, organised by Montona , take place between April and mid-October and are open to over-18s holding a valid driver’s licence.

Join the ladies who lunch

13.  Join the ladies who lunch

Outside Motovun, off the roundabout that leads into Livade, the Konoba Dolina attracts local regulars and the elderly Italian ladies who frequent the nearby Istarske toplice spa centre. Both are drawn by the great-value, fresh, seasonal dishes: in autumn, for example, huge plates of meaty porcini mushrooms come served with olive oil. Asparagus appears in spring. Most times of the year, you’ll find heavenly fuži pasta with truffles, either in a cream sauce or without. Sugary kroštule doughnuts should finish things off nicely – the elegant signore also indulge.

Pick up a local souvenir

14.  Pick up a local souvenir

  • Gifts and souvenirs

Of the many little boutiques and galleries that dot Motovun’s historic centre, the Etnobutiga Ča is probably the most authentic. This little store has been arranged in the same style as a 19th-century peasant home, with original furniture. Although the cupboards and chairs aren’t for sale, the grappas, honeys, truffles, jams, herbs, wines and essential oils are – and are equally authentic. There are also all kinds of decorative artefacts carved from olive wood, as well as ceramics.

Admire Venetian architecture

15.  Admire Venetian architecture

Its façade dominating a busy street just off Motovun’s panoramic walkway, the Parish Church of Sv Stjepan is thought to have been the work of a follower of Venetian architect Andrea Palladio, in the late 1500s or early 1600s. It was built on an older church from the early medieval era, erected perhaps as early as the 11 th century. The influential Palladio, responsible for the Palladian that became popular throughout Italy and then Europe, died in 1580, but the design for this church is said to have been his creation. An unknown Venetian artist was also responsible for the painting of the Last Supper on display over the altar. The Romanesque-Gothic bell tower alongside the church dates from the 13 th century.

Take the waters

16.  Take the waters

At Livade alongside Motovun, Istarske toplice are thermal waters used in Roman times – coins and jewellery have been found on the site. Beside the local landmark of a 85-metre-high rock, the Spring of Sv Stjepan provides mineral-rich curative waters. Known as the Terme Santo Stefano in Habsburg times, this spa has attracted generations of locals for treatment of rheumatic and dermatological conditions. A state-run health centre in the 1970s, the site was then developed as a resort hotel and is now in private hands. All kinds of spa detox packages are now available, as well as weekend breaks and teambuilding getaways.

Zigante

17.  Zigante

  • Mediterranean
  • price 3 of 4

Cornering the market in truffle dining and carving out a slice of local history at the same time, Zigante is both the most famous restaurant in the region and a significant local industry based around this forest fungus. In the late 1990s, a certain Giancarlo Zigante and his dog Diana found the largest white truffle in history, a discovery that soon led to the opening of a shop, then this restaurant, then a traditional lodging, then a large processing and canning factory. The restaurant itself remains impressive, albeit pricey, set in a beautiful house with outdoor seating. Most dishes involve black truffles, with rarer white truffles used between October and December.

Go on a truffle hunt

18.  Go on a truffle hunt

The European oaks that comprise the ancient Motovun Forest are prime territory for truffles. Every autumn, truffle hunters and their expert dogs scour the woods for these sought-after treasures, a lucrative activity if you know where to look. If you’re curious to find out how it’s done, you can join an experienced guide from Motovun-based firm Miro Tartufi , plus dogs Bela and Nera, and find this precious funghi while exploring unspoiled greenery. Miro also run a delicatessen in Motovun’s historic centre.

Konoba Dorjana

19.  Konoba Dorjana

First-time visitors looking to dine in Livade may head straight to the famous Zigante truffle restaurant – while Croatians and returning customers come to the Konoba Dorjana on the other side of the turning from Motovun. Also family-run, in this case the Basanežes, the Konoba Dorjana is all about pairing what’s in season – wild mushrooms, asparagus, snails, truffles – with a suitable staple, polenta, pasta, and so on. The steak sprinkled with truffles is said to be the best for miles around. The point here is that it’s no fuss, no formality – a homely dining room is done out with wood, stone and black-and-white photographs, the service is just the right balance of polite yet laid-back.

See how they built the Parenzana

20.  See how they built the Parenzana

At this museum in Livade especially dedicated to this legendary Istrian narrow-gauge rail line, archive photographs, vintage postcards and original documentation hark back to an era when crossing this distant outpost of the Habsburg Empire was a huge adventure. Opened in 1902, linking Trieste in modern-day Italy to Poreč on the Istrian coast, the Parenzana was a feat of engineering, winding alongside thick woodland and past steep inclines. A look at the changing colours on the map here indicates the challenging terrain. Photographs depict two main types of passenger: daytrippers in Sunday finery, and locals with business to take care of, probably at the port of Trieste. The Parenzana closed down in 1935 but the route has been revived of late to cater to cyclists and hikers.

Visit Croatia

The very charming Motovun (Montona in Italian) in the countryside of Istria is one of the prettiest hilltop towns in the region. Located about 25km inland from Porec, this small town (its population is just over 900 people) is situated at a height of 277m above sea level. The walled Motovun is one of the most interesting inland towns to visit in Istria. It is a great place to sample local cuisine and wine and is also famous for its annual film festival .

Motovun (then part of Italy) is the birthplace of the celebrated Italian-American racing car driver Mario Andretti , who won the F1 Drivers’ Championship in 1978.

Motovun

Getting to Motovun

Buses to Motovun are a bit few and far between – if you’re in Porec or Rovinj, ask locally for timetables. If you’re travelling from further afield in Istria (or even from these towns as well), consider travelling via the inland town of Pazin. A bus from Pazin to Motovun takes just under 30 minutes.

Realistically, it would be best to visit Motovun with your own car. It’s an easy drive from many places in Istria; a car also gives you plenty of scope for exploring the local area.

Things to see and do in and around Motovun

Walk up the hill in Motovun to reach the top, more historic area is an excellent way of exploring and getting a feel for this lovely town.

Main Square

The main square contains the Church of St Stephen which was constructed in the 17th century to a design by Venetian architect Andrea Palladio (with additions in the 18th century). Next to the church is the belltower from the 13th century (originally a lookout post) which stands at 27m tall.

Motovun Church of St Stephen

Town Walls and Gates

The earliest parts of these walls stem from the 11th and 12th centuries, with later additions in the 15th and 16th centuries, including the town gates. There are magnificent views to the surrounding countryside as well as inwards to some hidden gems of Motovun itself.

Motovun Town Walls

Parenzana (also referred to as Istrijanka ) is a defunct railway that used to run from Trieste in Italy to Porec on the Istrian coast in the early 20th century. (It was closed in 1935). Its tracks have long since been removed; sections of it (including those in Italy and Slovenia) are now popular with mountain bikers, cyclists and hikers. In this region, the hike along the Parenzana trail to the village of Vizinada is popular, a route of about 12km.

Paragliding

If you’re after even more impressive views of the town, consider a tandem paragliding flight high up in the air! Contact Paragliding Istria for more details.

Eating and Drinking in Motovun

Pod Voltom offers the chance to sample some truffle specialities and meat dishes – all with a view – in the heart of the town.

Konoba Mondo has had high praise from around the world – acclaimed chef and writer Anthony Bourdain was a fan. Come to here to try traditional Istrian cuisine, including pasta and meat dishes.

Zigante (in nearby Livade) is another top, top choice if you’re after sampling more truffles. Zigante was the first restaurant to specialise in truffle dishes; there are numerous pasta, meat and fish dishes with black or white truffles. Not forgetting truffle ice cream for dessert, of course.

B5 Wine Bar is the place for a glass of something cold or a coffee to perk you up.

Accommodation in Motovun

There are two hotels in town. The funky, four star Hotel Roxanich towards the base of Motovun has an outdoor pool, restaurant and spa and wellness centre. The three star Boutique Hotel Kastel is at the top of the town and offers an indoor pool and spa.

There are also a good number of private apartments and villas for rent in the area. See Accommodation in Motovun .

Events in Motovun

As mentioned, one of the best known events is the annual Motovun Film Festival which showcases independent films. Held every July, the open-air night-time screenings offer up a wonderful atmosphere.

The legend of Veli Joze is celebrated with a festival every September. As the story goes (written by prominent Croatia writer Vladimir Nazor in the early 20th century), Veli Joze was a gentle giant who lived in this area and who represented the Croatian people of Istria and their struggle for equality. The festival celebrates him as well as other fantasy tales, and there’s general entertainment and merriment for all ages.

The Teran Wine and Truffle Festival is normally held in mid-October. The festival celebrates that Istrian speciality – truffle – as well as offering tastings of the local Teran wine.
