Who can use Chase's travel portal?

How to use chase's travel portal, other things you can do in chase's portal, chase travel contact options, chase's travel portal can be lucrative.

Chase Ultimate Rewards® points are among the most useful rewards you can earn. When it comes time to redeem them, you will be directed to Chase's travel portal. This is where you can book flights, hotels and rental cars with points, redeem them for merchandise and gift cards, or transfer points to other programs.

Should you redeem points to pay for a trip instead of using cash or transfer them to a loyalty program partner to get better value? You'll need to do a little homework to find the right answer as each situation is different.

Chase points are the currency you earn when using cards like Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or Chase Sapphire Reserve® . They are superior in many ways to other point currencies because  you earn more than one penny in value  per point with these two cards. For example, when redeeming through Chase's travel portal, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® will net you 1.5 cents in value per point and the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card will net you 1.25 cents in value per point. When you transfer to a partner, your per-point-value may be even greater.

With the travel portal, you can redeem points to pay for an entire trip or you can use a mix of points and cash to cover a travel booking. You can also pay all in cash, earning 5 to 10 points per $1 spent, depending on the card you have. Using points for travel is the most valuable way to extract value from Chase Ultimate Rewards® for most people.

It's an efficient website, but some irritants snag even savvy travelers. Let's dig into Chase's travel portal's good and bad. You'll find that it is mostly good, if not great.

travel guide portal

Chase cards vary in earning and redemption benefits so you will want to pay attention to which one you use, especially if you have more than one card. The most valuable cards earn Ultimate Rewards® points, but some Chase cards, like the United℠ Explorer Card , earn miles or points in that co-branded program (in this example, United MileagePlus miles ).

Let’s review the cards that earn Chase Ultimate Rewards®, with the most rewarding cards first. Keep in mind that if you have more than one of these cards, you can move points between Chase Ultimate Rewards® accounts to redeem them from an account that delivers more cents per point in value.

These cards earn Chase Ultimate Rewards® and provide access to Chase's travel portal:

Chase Sapphire Reserve® .

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card .

Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card .

Chase Freedom Unlimited® .

Chase Freedom Flex℠ .

Ink Business Cash® Credit Card .

Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card .

Chase Freedom Rise Credit Card.

There is an important perk to remember if you have multiple cards. Since the Chase Sapphire Reserve® card offers 1.5 cents in value per point and the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card and the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card offer 1.25 cents in value, it is best to redeem points from these accounts rather than any other Chase card. c

If you have one of those two premium cards and another Chase card (like Chase Freedom Unlimited® , for example), you can move your Ultimate Rewards® points from the Chase Freedom Unlimited® account to a premium card’s account (like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® card).

This strategy allows you to unlock half a cent more in value in seconds. It’s one of the best benefits of Ultimate Rewards® when you have a premium card and one of its no-fee cards.

Want to earn a bunch of points quickly to make a redemption? The sign-up bonuses on these cards can rake in extra points if you meet the terms and conditions.

Here’s a primer on what you can and cannot do with Ultimate Rewards® points.

Log in to your account, then navigate to the Chase Ultimate Rewards® tab on the right of the screen. If you have more than one card that earns this currency, you can see each balance and select the account from which you want to redeem points.

Once you select the card, you’ll be taken to a homepage that shows the points you have earned and how you can redeem them. We recommend sticking to travel redemptions rather than using points for merchandise as the value diminishes significantly with the latter.

travel guide portal

Select the "Travel" tab at the top of the screen. From here, you can decide whether to transfer points to a partner or redeem them as cash for a trip.

One of the best perks of using this travel portal to make a points redemption is that you still earn frequent flyer miles on most airline tickets since these are booked as a revenue ticket (not as an award redemption like when using airline miles to book a flight).

How to book award flights in Chase's travel portal

travel guide portal

This is one of the more popular features of using points, but keep in mind that Expedia operates Chase's portal on the back end. It doesn't feature all airlines, which can frustrate travelers searching for a flight. Even if you find a flight on an airline's website or third-party booking site, it doesn't mean it will be available at Chase.

travel guide portal

Enter the relevant details in the search bar to find a flight. Results can be filtered by stops, airline or price. Another benefit of this portal is that you aren't subject to award seat availability in the same way you might be when redeeming miles through an airline's program.

If there is a seat that could be bought with cash, you can usually redeem points for it. Plain and simple.

travel guide portal

Compare how many miles you would need if booking directly with the airline with what Chase is charging.

If it would cost fewer points to book directly with the airline, you’ll want to use miles instead. For example, Delta co-branded American Express cardholders can often redeem their miles like cash on Delta’s website (at 1 cent per mile’s value). That’s just average, but if it is cheaper than what Chase is charging, consider that the better option. But don’t forget that airlines will add on taxes and fees when redeeming miles . Airfare booked with Chase Ultimate Rewards® points don't have additional costs tacked on — these are already bundled into the fare.

Another important note is that some low-cost airlines like Allegiant don't appear in search results. If you want to travel on a budget airline, then you'll need to visit those websites to compare fares.

travel guide portal

You can pay in cash, points or a combination. Chase will display particular details about your fare, like whether assigned seats or checked bags are included. This may not take into account any elite status perks you hold.

How to book hotels in Chase's travel portal

You can also redeem points for hotel stays using Ultimate Rewards® points. This is great news, especially when staying at hotels where you may not have  elite status  or don't care about elite perks or points earned.

Keep in mind that when making a reservation outside a hotel’s official reservation channels, you won’t earn points in its program or be able to take advantage of elite status benefits. So if you have status with a hotel chain, this isn't the best value unless you are willing to forgo those benefits.

travel guide portal

Making a reservation is straightforward. Enter the city and travel dates to see a list of hotels available for redemption. Then, you can redeem points or pay in cash for your trip.

travel guide portal

Like with flights, compare the cost of Chase Ultimate Rewards® points with the number of points a hotel’s program is charging. A particular favorite is World of Hyatt, which still uses an award chart and, as a transfer partner of Chase Ultimate Rewards®, can often deliver more favorable deals when using Hyatt’s points rather than Chase points.

travel guide portal

For example, it would cost about 9,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards® points to redeem a night at Hyatt Place London Heathrow Airport. But, if you transfer points to World of Hyatt, you would need 5,000 points for the same night’s stay.

One of the booking tabs also leads to the Chase Luxury Hotel & Resort Collection . This subset of high-end hotels delivers bonus perks like free breakfast, a $100 hotel credit and room upgrades, depending on the property and other things.

You can book directly through Chase or redeem points and be eligible. It’s nice to have elite status-style perks at a hotel where you may not have status or that doesn't have a loyalty program.

How to book car rentals in Chase's travel portal

travel guide portal

This is a great place to reserve rental cars using points, and Chase rental car insurance benefits apply when using the card and paying with points. But, for that to be the case, you will want to pay for part of the rental in cash so the insurance benefits are activated. To do that, pay with a combination of cash and points, and decline the rental company's insurance first.

How to book activities in Chase's travel portal

travel guide portal

Activities available for booking through Chase's travel portal include tours and experiences at home or when traveling and airport transfers. Price comparison plays a role here, too, since many hotel brands have their own platforms like Marriott Bonvoy Moments or FIND Experiences from World of Hyatt. These allow you to redeem points for experiences.

Check which program is cheaper before redeeming Chase points if you find similar options in either program.

How to book cruises in Chase's travel portal

Since cruise bookings can be more complex, you will need to call Chase Ultimate Rewards® at 855-234-2542 to make a reservation. There are many ways to earn multiple points when booking a cruise that may be better than using Chase, but when redeeming points for a cruise , there can be a lot of value.

Using Chase's portal to make a travel reservation is also strategic, as depending on your card, you can earn a healthy stash of points this way. Just be sure to compare the benefits you can earn with the opportunity cost of booking elsewhere.

Benefits of booking travel in Chase's portal

Let’s say you have a premium card like Chase Sapphire Reserve® . It earns 5x points per $1 when booking flights through the portal. The sweet spot is when using this card for hotel stays and rental cars booked via the portal for 10x points per dollar spent. Consider what’s in your wallet, and decide which card will net the most points.

Another benefit is that you will earn miles from flights booked through the portal, even when redeeming Chase Ultimate Rewards® points since these are viewed as a revenue ticket.

Remember, you will want to compare if it is cheaper to redeem airline miles directly through a carrier’s redemption program or if you can use fewer points by redeeming Chase points via the portal.

Sometimes it might make more sense to transfer points from Chase to an airline partner when redeeming a flight (or a hotel program when making a hotel stay). Be as vigilant with price comparison when redeeming miles and points as you would when using cash.

Does Chase's travel portal price match?

No. You cannot submit a lower fare elsewhere for a price guarantee here since this isn't a publicly available site. It is only available to those who have a Chase card.

What else you need to know

When booking through this reservation site, keep in mind that most airlines and hotels cannot assist directly with a reservation. They see this as a third-party booking through Expedia and will direct you to Chase's agents.

Many travelers report the experience can be frustrating when travel disruptions or cancellations occur. Agents are friendly but can sometimes be limited in their abilities, often reading prompts on their screens in international call centers.

It can be a hazard booking a reservation with a third party, but the trade-off in redeeming points is worth it for some travelers.

If you do need to contact a Chase portal agent for support on a reservation made through the site, whether flight, hotel, car rental or activity, you've got one option: a good, old-fashioned telephone call.

For support on flights, hotels, car rentals and activities — especially changes or cancellations — Chase lists one number: 866-331-0773.

Chase also lists different contact numbers based on the card you hold, so you may want to give one of these a try:

Chase Sapphire Reserve® : 855-234-2542.

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card : 866-331-0773.

All other cards: 866-951-6592.

If you compare prices and consider the opportunity cost of using the portal instead of booking elsewhere, you can almost always come out ahead.

You can save money, earn bonus points and travel better with transferable loyalty points like Chase Ultimate Rewards®. They have the flexibility and versatility necessary to deliver excellent value on travel (rather than being locked into one airline or hotel loyalty program). With the right card (or suite of cards), you’ll be able to accumulate points and benefits.

Key takeaways

  • If you have a Chase credit card that earns cash back or travel points, you can use your rewards to book airfare, hotel stays, car rentals, cruises and more through the Chase Ultimate Rewards travel portal.
  • Where most travel bookings through Chase offer 1 cent per point in value, premium Chase travel credit cards let you get 25 percent or 50 percent more value for your rewards.
  • The Chase travel portal lets you book travel with points, cash or a combination of the two. You can even earn bonus cash back or points when you book paid travel through Chase.

Most credit card rewards programs let you redeem your points or cash back in several different ways, and this is definitely the case with Chase Ultimate Rewards . These points are some of the most dynamic and versatile among all rewards programs available today, mostly because you can redeem them for cash back, statement credits, gift cards, merchandise and travel through Chase.

Some premium travel credit cards from Chase even let you get 25 percent to 50 percent more value for points when you redeem for travel through Chase, and the same selection of cards allow 1:1 point transfers to Chase airline and hotel partners.

If you’re interested in booking travel directly with your rewards, however, you should know that this is an option for their travel credit cards as well as cash back credit cards associated with the brand. All rewards cards offered through the bank let users book travel the exact same way — through the Chase Ultimate Rewards travel portal.

To use the Chase Ultimate Rewards travel portal, you need to have a Chase credit card and an online account with Chase.com. Once you log in to your account, you only need to click on the side of the page where your rewards points are displayed to access the Chase Ultimate Rewards booking portal.

Screenshot of chase ultimate rewards travel portal account interface with rewards points

Once you click on your rewards total to get to the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal, you’ll be asked which one of your Chase card accounts you want to access. This part is important since some Chase credit cards offer more value when you redeem points for travel through Chase.

Specifically, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card offer 25 percent more value when you redeem points for travel through Chase, whereas the Chase Sapphire Reserve® offers 50 percent more value.

Once you are logged in to your rewards account, you can see all the different ways you can redeem your points or cash back. Your options will vary depending on the Chase credit card you have, but they can include:

  • Pay with points options
  • Chase Pay Yourself Back
  • Transfers to travel partners
  • Experiences

To book travel through the Chase travel portal, you’ll click on the option that says “Travel.”

screenshot of interface of the chase ultimate rewards travel portal

At this point, you’ll be shown all the different ways you can use your points directly for travel through Chase. These can include airfare, hotels, car rentals, experiences, cruises and more.

Using Chase Ultimate Rewards travel is a lot like booking travel through any other site given you search for the travel you want, compare prices and options and proceed by making a booking based on whatever you decide. The difference is, you can pay for airfare, hotels and other travel with Chase points, cash or a combination of cash and points.

The fact Chase lets you book with a combination of cash and points makes it really easy to use up small amounts of points you have on your card, especially since there are no minimums to redeem this way.

Who can access the portal

To access the Chase Ultimate Rewards travel portal, you need to have a credit card that earns rewards with the card issuer. This means co-branded airline and hotel credit cards offered through Chase will not work, and you’ll need a Chase credit card that earns cash back or travel rewards instead.

Credit cards that give you access to the Chase travel portal include:

  • Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card
  • Chase Sapphire Reserve®
  • Chase Freedom Unlimited® *
  • Chase Freedom Flex℠ *
  • Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card
  • Ink Business Cash® Credit Card
  • Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card

Benefits of booking through Chase Ultimate Rewards

While many experts believe you should always transfer points to airlines and hotels before booking travel with rewards, there are plenty of reasons to use the Chase Ultimate Rewards travel portal instead — at least part of the time. Here are some of the benefits you can get for doing so.

Earn a ton of rewards when you book paid travel through Chase

While the Chase Ultimate Rewards travel portal lets you redeem points or cash back for travel through Chase, you can also pay for travel through the portal and earn more rewards when you do. The fact is, all Chase credit cards offer a minimum of 5 percent back or 5X points on travel booked through Chase Ultimate Rewards, and the Chase Sapphire Reserve offers 10X points on hotels and car rental bookings made through Chase.

You can still earn airline miles

Also note that you’ll still earn airline miles for flights you book through the Chase portal, and that’s true whether you pay with Chase points, cash or a combination of the two. In order to double dip and earn airline miles, you just need to add your frequent flyer number to your booking with the airline after you pay.

Get 25% to 50% more value when redeeming your points

As we mentioned already, some Chase credit cards offer more than 1 cent per point in value when you use rewards to book travel through Chase. Where the Chase Sapphire Preferred and Ink Business Preferred offer 25 percent more value when you redeem points for travel through Chase, the Chase Sapphire Reserve offers 50 percent more value.

Ultimately, this means you get 1.25 cents per point for travel with the Chase Sapphire Preferred and Ink Business Preferred, and 1.5 cents per point for travel with the Chase Sapphire Reserve.

Book any travel you want

Booking through the Chase travel portal also lets you avoid dealing with complex loyalty programs and limited award availability often found with hotel and airline programs. When you book travel through Chase, you get to pick from any hotel brand, airline, car rental company or travel provider that’s available for your destination and dates.

Combine your Chase points in one account

Also note that Chase lets you pool rewards from multiple cards into one account for premium travel redemptions. For example, you can earn cash back with a card like the Chase Freedom Unlimited, use a business card like the Ink Business Preferred for all your business spending and utilize the Chase Sapphire Preferred for all your travel, dining and online grocery purchases. From there, you can combine all your points into your Chase Sapphire Preferred account to get 25 percent more value when booking travel through Chase, or for 1:1 point transfers to Chase airline and hotel partners .

Is the Chase Ultimate Rewards travel portal worth using?

The Chase Ultimate Rewards travel portal is definitely worth using in a wide range of scenarios, and that’s true if you also transfer points to airlines and hotels part of the time. The fact is, the Chase portal gives you another way to book the travel you want if you cannot find award availability with an airline or hotel program, want to book travel you don’t have other points for or if you need extra flexibility due to where you’re traveling or when.

Also note that you can use Chase points to book other types of travel you can’t book with airline miles or hotel loyalty points. For example, you can use the Chase Ultimate Rewards travel portal to book airport transfers in your destination or to book snorkeling tours, guided museum tours and other excursions through the portal’s “activities” tab.

That said, there are certainly situations where the Chase travel portal is not the best deal, or when you’ll be a lot better off paying cash for travel directly or transferring points to airline and hotel partners. At the end of the day, the Chase travel portal is just one tool you can use to maximize your rewards and your travel budget.

The bottom line

Now that you know how the Chase Ultimate Rewards travel portal works, you should spend some time getting acquainted with all the ways you can use your points. The fact is, Chase lets you book airfare, hotels, rental cars, cruises, activities and more using points, cash or both, giving you a lot more flexibility when it comes to using your rewards.

Bankrate’s travel toolkit can help you learn more about Chase Ultimate Rewards points and other travel programs, so consider continuing your research there.

Credit Card Travel Portals: A Quick Guide

T he number of travel booking websites you can choose from is astonishing: Priceline, Expedia, Kayak.com plus a hundred others. With so many choices, adding a credit card travel portal to the mix might feel unnecessary. But don't be so quick to dismiss them. Credit card booking engines can be convenient and easy to use. Plus, they offer a distinct advantage: Your bookings automatically integrate into your existing rewards program.

What Are Credit Card Travel Portals?

Credit card travel portals are online booking platforms managed by your credit card issuer. To access the booking engine, you'll need to hold an eligible credit card through that issuer and may need to login before beginning (or finalizing) your reservation.

For the most part, credit card travel portals work exactly the same way as other booking platforms you may have used in the past. The search interfaces are intuitive, with comprehensive results and clear pricing. The main difference between your card's booking engine and a generic online travel agency is that you typically have the option to pay with your card, rewards or a combination of both.

Why You Should Book Through Credit Card Travel Portals

Earning points.

Several cards offer additional points per dollar on bookings made through their travel portal and charged to your credit card. In some cases, this can add up to huge earnings. For example, the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card earns . That means hotel and car rental reservations made through their platform outearn reservations made elsewhere by a huge margin.

This is far from the only card offering considerable rewards for qualifying bookings. Check your specific card details to see if booking through their card portals has an incentive for doing so.

Redeeming Points

The ability to pay with points is a major convenience for cardholders. You can skip the step to transfer points to frequent flier or hotel reward programs "and the black-out dates or inventory constraints that often come with award bookings. You can skip the step to convert points to cash back, too. Simply select the option to pay with points in full or in part at check-out.

Best of all, some cards offer an increased value per point when using points to book travel through their portal rather than redeeming them toward cash. This is true of many Chase Ultimate Rewards® cards. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card both provide 25% more value (1.25 cents per point) when redeeming rewards to book travel through their portal. Other cards may also offer premiums toward travel redemptions.

Travel Credits

On select cards, you might have an even richer reason to use a credit card booking portal: Statement credits that essentially reimburse you for your purchase. For instance, with The Platinum Card® from American Express (Terms apply) you can earn up to $200 in statement credits when you prepay for a qualifying hotel reservation through American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection via AmexTravel.com.

Some cards offer discounts instead of statement credits when booking through a travel portal. The Citi Premier® Card includes a one-time $100 savings on hotel bookings of $500 or more made through the Citi ThankYou travel portal.

Pitfalls of Using Credit Card Booking Engines

While travel portals have their benefits, they come with downsides, too. For one thing, any reservations you make via your card's travel portal will be treated as a third-party reservation, just like bookings made through other online travel agencies.

When it comes to hotel stays, third-party bookings are almost always ineligible to participate in branded loyalty programs such as Marriott Bonvoy or Hilton Honors . You won't earn hotel points on your stay"instead you may earn credit card points"and you won't earn stay credits toward elite status. You also won't receive elite benefits. For independent properties (or hotel programs you aren't a member of), this might not be a consideration.

Another limitation of third-party bookings is that you often can't work directly with the airline or hotel to make changes or cancellations to your reservation. Instead, you'll contact the credit card travel agency to make these changes. When you have unexpected issues with your travel, such as a canceled flight due to weather, this can put you at a disadvantage. There may be delays in processing your change or they may not have as many options available to you.

Lastly, keep an eye on prices before booking through your credit card travel portal. Sometimes, the cost of a hotel stay, flight or car rental may be identical to booking directly with your provider. Other times, booking through a portal may have an upcharge or disqualify you from member discounts

Popular Credit Card Booking Engines

American express.

Book: Flights, hotels, air + hotel packages, car rentals, cruises

The value of Amex Travel varies based on precisely which American Express credit cards you hold. While many of them give you the option to earn and redeem Membership Rewards when using the travel portal, some cards also provide access to additional benefits.

There are two main things that stand out in the Amex Travel booking engine. First, if you're logged into your Gold or Platinum card account, you'll notice you have access to properties designated as part of The Hotel Collection or Fine Hotels + Resorts . These bookings offer on-property credits or elite-like benefits during your stay, with perks like early check-in, room upgrades and complimentary breakfast.

Second, you might be eligible for discounts on some flights. When searching for airfare on Amex Travel, some results may be labeled as Insider Fares"you'll get a discount when paying entirely with points. Additionally, different versions of the Amex Platinum card include additional flight discounts. The International Airlines Program offers discounts on premium fares for select flights and The Business Platinum Card® from American Express (Terms apply) rebates up to 35% of a flight's price in points on qualifying airfare booked and paid for with Membership Rewards.

Capital One

Book: Flights, hotels, rental cars

Capital One's travel booking platform keeps things simple, with rewards worth a flat 1 cent per point when used toward travel. While that's nothing special, the portal is anything but boring.

Capital One Travel integrates tools to help you find the lowest flight price right into its engine. When searching, you'll see color-coded calendars designating cheaper days in case you're flexible. Furthermore, when you click through to a specific flight result, the portal suggests whether or not it's a good time to book, thanks to prediction algorithms provided by their partner Hopper.

Hotel reservations don't have the same integrations, but Capital One Travel does offer a Premier Collection of specially-designated luxury properties that include complimentary breakfast, complimentary WiFi and a $100 experience credit for on-site charges such as spa treatments or dining. These bonus perks can add tremendous value to your stay. However, the selection of participating hotels is limited and many destinations don't have properties with these perks.

Book: Flights, hotels, rental cars, cruises and activities

The Chase Ultimate Rewards travel portal is the most comprehensive credit card booking platform, with the ability to book tours and other activities worldwide in addition to making more standard travel reservations. Not only does this give you more opportunities to earn or redeem rewards, but it also makes it a one-stop shop where you can book (and track) all your plans.

Beyond that, though, Chase keeps things simple without all the bells and whistles. They don't have splashy features or impressive discounts. Instead, the Chase travel portal focuses on displaying broad results with clear pricing. The differences between multiple airfare options are clearly displayed, as are different hotel room types and booking options.

In short, the Chase booking engine delivers an easy user experience but most of its users are probably there to earn or redeem points or use a travel credit included with their card.

One exception is for travelers booking Chase Luxury Hotels & Resorts , which is a feature only available to Chase cardholders of specific cards. These properties, like Amex's Fine Hotels + Resorts or Capital One's Premier Collection, include extra benefits with your stay. Property benefits and credits vary by hotel so check the listing carefully before booking.

Book: Flights, hotels, rental cars and activities

After years of an underwhelming and restricted user interface, the Citi travel portal has finally been upgraded to a usable booking experience. Its minimalist booking experience keeps things focused and easy to learn, offering search functions and filters that can help travelers find what they need quickly.

Though the website is much easier to use now, there are still a handful of limitations travelers will want to be aware of. When booking hotels, the portal defaults to nonrefundable bookings, which might be a dealbreaker for some travelers. In fact, a sample search in Munich only offered 94 properties with optionally refundable rates out of 136 hotels"making the incentives included on select Citi cards a whole lot less valuable.

One other constraint to the Citi portal is that you aren't able to book multi-city flights. In some cases, you might be able to work around this by booking two one-way tickets. However, as experienced travelers know, it can often be cheaper to book an open-jaw or multi-city itinerary than booking separate segments, especially when traveling internationally.

Despite these hurdles, there's still value in booking through the Citi portal, especially if your card includes discounts or bonus rewards for doing so. When completing your reservation, cardmembers can choose between paying with points, cash or a mixture of both.

Bottom Line

Credit card travel portals fill an important need for reward travelers: you can often book flights or hotels that would be unavailable through branded loyalty programs. Cardholders can also earn points at elevated rates, potentially outperforming what you could find through other booking avenues. However, not all card booking engines are created equal and there can be downsides to using them. As with all travel, compare your options to find what works best for you.

You may know Capital One as a company that offers credit cards, car loans and bank accounts, but they also have a travel portal that allows you to book flights, hotels, rental cars and luxury vacations. For eligible Capital One cardholders, booking through the Capital One travel portal can be an excellent way to earn and redeem Capital One miles. Let’s take a look at the Capital One travel portal, how it works and who has access to its perks.

  • The Capital One travel portal is accessible to cardholders of more than 15 different Capital One cards.
  • Eligible cards will earn extra rewards on their Capital One travel bookings.
  • Features of the Capital One travel portal include price drop protection and price matching.
  • Capital One miles can be earned and redeemed through the Capital One travel portal.

How to book travel through the Capital One travel portal

Booking travel through the Capital One travel portal is simple. To do so, simply navigate to the Capital One travel portal website . Then log in to your Capital One account.

Once logged in, you’ll be directed to the site’s home page.

travel guide portal

From there, you can search for flights, hotels and rental cars for any travel you have planned. Just enter your search parameters, such as travel dates and destination, to get a list of booking options.

Your search results will vary depending on what type of travel you want to book. For example, if you’re searching for a hotel, Capital One will bring up a dynamic map and a list of properties that match your filters.

Once you’ve perused available options, you can make a selection that suits your needs. You’ll then go through the checkout process, which includes filling in your personal details and payment information. Note that you’ll need to use your eligible Capital One card to pay.

Who can use the portal?

The Capital One travel portal is accessible to those with an eligible Capital One credit card. These include:

Is the portal worth using?

There are a few factors to consider when deciding whether or not to use the Capital One travel portal for a booking.

First, depending on which Capital One card you hold, you may be able to earn big rewards by booking your travel through the portal. For example, the Capital One Venture X earns 2 miles per $1 on purchases, 5 miles per $1 on flights booked through Capital One Travel and on purchases through Capital One Entertainment and 10 miles per $1 on hotels and rental cars booked via Capital One Travel.

Capital One miles can be redeemed in a variety of ways, but are worth one cent each toward travel, which means you’re effectively getting 10% back on eligible bookings.

travel guide portal

That being said, many hotel and rental car companies limit the benefits you’ll receive if you choose to book through a third party (such as the travel portal). This can mean you lose out on perks such as bonus points and the benefits of any elite status that you’ve earned. However, this varies by hotel, so you might want to check before you book.

How to maximize your Capital One travel benefits through the portal

Capital One has built a robust portal that provides value to its customers. This is especially true when it comes to booking flights. The flight search function includes a handy calendar of prices to show you at a glance when fares are high.

travel guide portal

Capital One has also partnered with the travel app Hopper to give customers free price prediction tools. When searching, the portal will let you know whether you should book or wait for a better price.

travel guide portal

Even better, if you book a flight when recommended by Capital One, you’re automatically enrolled in price drop protection for 10 days. If the price goes down during that time frame, you’ll get a refund of up to $50.

You can also choose to set an alert for your flight, which will notify you when the price changes. Finally, if you’re not ready to book but are worried that the price will increase, you can pay a small fee to freeze the cost of your fare so you can return later to book.

Other benefits associated with the Capital One travel portal include access to the Lifestyle Collection and the Premier Collection. If you have an eligible Capital One card, you’ll be able to book specialty hotels with exclusive benefits such as room upgrades, late checkout and experience credits.

Quick guide to Capital One rewards

Different Capital One cards earn different types of rewards. Some cards earn cash back while others earn miles.

Capital One miles can be redeemed in a variety of ways, including transfers to Capital One hotel and airline partners. This is generally the most valuable method of redeeming miles, but you can also redeem them for statement credits against travel purchases that you’ve made. While this isn’t typically the best way to redeem Capital One rewards, it can be useful if there are no reward options available for the dates you want to travel.

Finally, Capital One miles can also be used for bookings within the Capital One travel portal. You’ll be able to redeem them at a rate of one cent each — but you’d be better off using your card to pay, then redeeming miles against your purchase. This allows you to earn rewards on your booking before wiping away the charges.

Other ways to redeem miles include gift cards, entertainment and cash, but you’ll want to be wary of doing so as you won’t get as much value from your rewards this way as you would with travel redemptions.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

The Capital One travel portal works with many different airlines, including Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Spirit Airlines and JetBlue.

However, you won’t see flights from Southwest Airlines on the Capital One travel portal. Instead, you’ll want to search directly with the airline to find these tickets.

Capital One miles don’t expire as long as you have an eligible Capital One credit card open. If you plan to close a Capital One credit card account, make sure to use or transfer any accumulated miles first.

Unlike hotels and rental cars, airlines generally don’t penalize those who book through a third party. This means you’ll be able to enter your loyalty program number and earn rewards on flights booked through the Capital One travel portal.

Many of the best credit cards on the market offer a statement credit (up to $100) that will reimburse you for the cost of TSA PreCheck or Global Entry, two popular trusted traveler programs that can help you speed through the airport. This includes Capital One cards such as the Capital One Venture X rewards credit card and the Capital One Venture Rewards credit card.

Making a booking through the Capital One travel portal doesn’t automatically entitle you to entry into airport lounges. However, certain Capital One credit cards offer this as a benefit. For example, those who have the Capital One Venture X rewards credit card or the Capital One Venture X Rewards Business card receive a complimentary Priority Pass Select membership (enrollment required) and unlimited access to Capital One lounges for themselves and two guests.

Capital One miles: How to earn, redeem and transfer rewards

Katie Genter

Transferable credit card rewards are especially valuable because of the many ways you can redeem them. You might be familiar with rewards like Chase Ultimate Rewards points and American Express Membership Rewards points. But, another transferable reward currency that can offer significant value to some travelers is Capital One miles .

Capital One miles are appealing for many reasons. For example, several Capital One cards that earn miles earn more than 1 mile per dollar spent on all purchases. And one Capital One card that earns miles only requires good credit. Plus, you should always be able to get at least 1 cent per mile when you redeem — and you may get significantly more value if you use Capital One's transfer partners .

So, here's everything you need to know about Capital One miles.

What are Capital One miles?

Capital One miles are the rewards you earn with select Capital One cards , including the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card and Capital One Spark Miles for Business .

You can redeem these miles in many ways, including transferring to select airline and hotel loyalty programs, redeeming for travel book ed through the Capital One travel portal and redeeming to cover recent travel purchases.

How to earn Capital One miles

You can earn Capital One miles through select credit cards. In particular, most Capital One credit cards offer an initial sign-up bonus when you open a new card and meet the specified spending requirements to earn the bonus. You'll also earn miles on most purchases, and some cards even offer anniversary bonus miles each year you renew your card.

Although Capital One offers many different credit cards, the Capital One cards that earn miles are those in the Venture and Spark Miles families. Here's a quick look at these cards and who they are best for:

  • Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card : Best for earning Capital One miles if you'll use the $300 Capital One Travel credit each account anniversary year ($395 annual fee; see rates and fees )

You can convert Capital One cash back into miles if you have one of the above cards. That means if you have a Capital One card like the Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card that earns cash-back rewards, you can convert your cash-back rewards into Capital One miles if you also have a card that earns Capital One miles.

I have the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card and plan to keep it long-term since it offers perks that more than offset its $395 annual fee (see rates and fees ). After all, I easily use the $300 Capital One Travel credit each account anniversary year by booking flights through the travel portal, and the 10,000-mile anniversary bonus is worth about $185 based on TPG's valuations . But check out our Capital One Venture X card review to learn about its many other valuable perks.

Capital One transfer partners

Capital One partners with several airline and hotel loyalty programs. You can transfer Capital One miles to these partner programs and then redeem through these loyalty programs if you wish.

Here's a look at the current Capital One transfer partners and the standard transfer ratios:

  • Accor Live Limitless : 2:1 transfer ratio
  • Aeromexico Rewards : 1:1 transfer ratio
  • Air Canada Aeroplan : 1:1 transfer ratio
  • Air France-KLM Flying Blue : 1:1 transfer ratio
  • Avianca LifeMiles : 1:1 transfer ratio
  • British Airways Executive Club : 1:1 transfer ratio
  • Cathay Pacific Asia Miles : 1:1 transfer ratio
  • Choice Privileges : 1:1 transfer ratio
  • Emirates Skywards : 1:1 transfer ratio
  • Etihad Airways Guest : 1:1 transfer ratio
  • EVA Airways Infinity MileageLands : 4:3 transfer ratio
  • Finnair Plus : 1:1 transfer ratio
  • Qantas Frequent Flyer : 1:1 transfer ratio
  • Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer : 1:1 transfer ratio
  • TAP Air Portugal Miles&Go : 1:1 transfer ratio
  • Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles : 1:1 transfer ratio
  • Virgin Red : 1:1 transfer ratio
  • Wyndham Rewards : 1:1 transfer ratio

Transfer bonuses may occasionally let you transfer Capital One miles to one or more partner programs at an elevated rate. Remember, transfers are one-way: Transferring rewards back to Capital One miles is almost always impossible once you've transferred them to a loyalty program.

How to redeem Capital One miles

You'll see multiple options for redeeming Capital One miles in your online account.

travel guide portal

You'll typically get the best value when you transfer your miles to airline and hotel partners, but you can also get decent value when booking through the Capital One travel portal or redeeming miles to offset recent travel purchases. Here are your options and the redemption value each should provide.

Redeem with airline and hotel partners

As mentioned above, you'll typically get the best value from your miles when you transfer them to airline and hotel partners by clicking "Convert rewards." In the previous section, I listed the Capital One transfer partners and the ratios at which you can transfer Capital One miles to each partner.

travel guide portal

Based on TPG's valuations, you can expect to get about 1.85 cents per Capital One mile when you redeem with airline and hotel partners. However, the exact value you get will depend on which transfer partners you use and the types of awards you book with these partners. Check out our story on maximizing Capital One miles for some recommendations.

Book through the Capital One travel portal

You can also redeem miles at a rate of 1 cent per mile when booking flights, hotels and rental cars through the Capital One travel portal . However, if you book paid travel through the Capital One travel portal with your Capital One card that earns transferable miles, you can earn as follows:

  • Venture X and Venture X Business : 10 miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars and 5 miles per dollar on flights booked through Capital One Travel
  • Venture, VentureOne, VentureOne for Good Credit, Spark Miles and Spark Miles Select : 5 miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel

As such, I recommend booking paid rates instead of redeeming Capital One miles when you book travel through the Capital One travel portal. Even if you want to redeem miles for your flight, hotel or car rental booking, you'll often be better off using miles to cover recent travel purchases instead of redeeming when booking through the travel portal.

Cover travel purchases

You can redeem Capital One miles to cover recent travel purchases made with your card. Capital One says eligible travel purchases usually include those you make with "airlines, hotels, rail lines, car rental agencies, limousine services, bus lines, cruise lines, taxi cabs, travel agents and time shares." However, whether a specific purchase is eligible depends on the merchant category code attached to the purchase.

You'll see any eligible purchases — which are travel purchases posted to your account in the last 90 days — listed in your online account when you click "Cover travel purchases."

travel guide portal

You can opt to cover the entire purchase if you have enough miles. Or, you can use miles to cover just part of the purchase. Either way, your miles are worth 1 cent each when you redeem them to cover recent travel purchases.

Other ways to redeem Capital One miles

As you might have noticed in the screenshot above, cardholders have several other ways to redeem Capital One miles. Most of these other redemption options offer lower redemption values, so we don't generally recommend using them. But here's an overview of your other redemption options:

  • Redeem for experiences : You can redeem miles for sports and concert tickets through Capital One Entertainment, usually at a redemption rate of 0.8 cents per mile.
  • Get gift cards : You can redeem miles for gift cards, usually at a redemption rate of 0.8 to 1.067 cents per mile.
  • Redeem for cash : You can request a statement credit or a check to your address at a redemption rate of 1 cent per mile.
  • Redeem with PayPal : You can apply miles when checking out with PayPal at a redemption rate of 0.8 cents per mile.
  • Shop with Amazon : You can apply miles at checkout for your Amazon.com orders at a redemption rate of 0.8 cents per mile.

As you can see, there are many ways to redeem Capital One miles for at least 1 cent each. So, there will rarely be a reason to redeem Capital One miles for anything less than 1 cent each.

Bottom line

When traveling overseas, I often use the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card as my everyday spending card. It doesn't charge foreign transaction fees, I know I'll earn at least 2 miles per dollar on all purchases, and I rarely have issues using it. But, I also generally find it useful to have access to Capital One miles when booking award flights. So, I'm always happy to earn more Capital One miles on my everyday purchases.

Now that you know how to earn and redeem Capital One miles, I expect you may also understand their value — especially if you transfer your miles to airline or hotel partners.
