What is Travel Insurance?

Travel insurance is a type of insurance that is custom-made for people going on domestic and international travels. It addresses the various risks that one may face during travels, including hospitalisation, medical expenses, loss of luggage or documents, cancellation or disruption of flights, and various other costs. Travel insurance covers you from the date of departure till your arrival back at the place of origin. For frequent fliers, a travel plan that remains effective for a certain period is more suitable as it covers multiple travels during the policy period.

How to Buy Travel Insurance Plan?

You can buy a travel insurance policy online or by visiting the insurer’s office. While applying online, you need to fill in the basic details like dates of travel, traveler details, coverage required, etc. Then you receive the quote, based on which you can select the travel insurance policy that suits your requirement. There are different types of travel plans customized for different travel needs. These include corporate, single, family, senior citizen, or student travel plans. You can purchase a travel plan that suits you the best. You can also buy travel insurance plans from insurance brokers and agents. However, ensure that they are licensed by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India. It is worth noting that you may be eligible for discounts if you buy a travel insurance plan online directly from the insurer.

When to Buy Travel Insurance?

If you plan to embark on multiple trips, you should buy a travel plan in advance to cover all the upcoming trips. Even in the case of a single trip, buying a travel plan in advance is advisable. Typically, it could be on the date of booking the tickets or a few days after that. You can also buy travel plans at the last minute. But you may miss out on crucial coverages. For instance, travel insurance offers cancellation coverage. But you will miss out on the same if the cancellation happens before the policy start date. In other words, buy your travel insurance well in advance to avail all benefits.

Why Buy Travel Insurance Policy?

Some of the common reasons that make a travel insurance important are:

  • People are more prone to medical problems in a foreign land, be it within India or overseas, due to changes in food habits and environmental reasons.
  • Travel insurance helps tackle such circumstances with ease.It protects in case of baggage losses at airports and theft or travel scams in many tourist destinations.
  • Travel insurance protects the policyholder in the event of flight delay or cancellation. It protects you in the event of natural calamities, man-made disasters, flight hijacking, etc. Student travelers can also opt for study interruption coverage in their travel plans.
  • Travel insurance may cover fatalities and repatriation of mortal remains.
  • Travel insurance is a mandatory requirement in more than 30 countries. It is a prerequisite for visa processing while travelling to these countries.

Who Should Buy a Travel Insurance Plan?

While it is mandatory to have travel insurance before visiting certain countries, people travelling to any country, in general, should buy a travel insurance plan. Along with, it is advisable for the following travelers to buy a travel insurance plan: Individual travelers and families Senior citizens - because of their higher medical susceptibility Corporate travelers can cover their travel risks while travelling on behalf of their organization Students can buy student-specific travel plans with longer validity People travelling in groups can insist on the purchase of travel insurance by their tour organizer Domestic travelers can buy travel plans designed to cover travel risks within the country

Types of Travel Insurance Plans in India

There are various types of travel insurance plans offered by insurers in India:

  • Basic Travel Policy: These plans cover basic travel risks that most insurers provide. The premium amount is comparatively low due to the limited coverage.
  • Comprehensive Travel Policy: Comprehensive plans offer a host of optional covers, like medical expenses or repatriation of mortal remains, many insurers may not provide. etc. Notably, Niva Bupa Travel Insurance offers over 40 travel-related covers, including the ones mentioned above.
  • Single Trip: One-time travelers can buy this policy before or after booking their tickets. This policy remains applicable for the duration of that trip.
  • Multi-trip: If the policy buyer has several trips planned for the year, they can opt for a multi-trip policy that offers coverage for a specific period instead of the trip duration. Frequent fliers opt for this plan to avoid buying plans repeatedly.
  • Student: Students can buy a travel plan that offers coverage for the study duration. Covers like sponsor protection and study interruption can be opted for to make the plan more student-friendly.
  • Policy buyers can opt for a single, family, group, or any other plan as per their requirements.

Eligibility Criteria for Travel Insurance

The various eligibility criteria for Niva Bupa Health Insurance's TravelAssure plan include:

  • Adults should be between the age of 18 and 70
  • Dependent children can be up to the age of 25
  • Travelers must possess and furnish mandatory documents like copies of passport, visa, income proof, and other relevant papers

Considerations Before Buying Travel Insurance Policy

Some of the factors that you need to consider before buying a travel insurance policy are:

  • Duration: If you are planning to travel again, it is advisable to opt for a long duration multi-trip travel insurance plan. If your single trip is for a longer duration, the premium will be higher, so plan your trip accordingly.
  • Nature of the Trip: Choose the plan as per the nature of your trip. Someone planning to do sky diving would have different optional covers compared to someone travelling to attend business meetings.
  • Sum Assured: Estimate your travel risk and finalize your sum assured accordingly. The higher the sum assured, the higher will be the premium.
  • Optional Covers: Go through the list of covers available and select judiciously. Selecting unnecessary covers will only escalate the premium.
  • Exclusions: There may be specified circumstances or conditions where the travel insurance is not applicable. Always familiarize yourself with the exclusions before buying the travel plan.

COVID-19 Coverage

Due to the global scale of the COVID-19 pandemic, most leading insurance companies offer COVID-19 specific coverages in their travel plans. Niva Bupa TravelAssure provides COVID-19 hospitalisation coverage up to the sum assured. Accordingly, if you are infected or test positive for COVID-19 during your overseas stay, the travel insurance plan will bear the cost of your treatment and hospitalisation. In almost all countries, a COVID-19 infection leads to the applicability of strict isolation rules and gets addressed as per their SOP when detected. Therefore, adequate COVID-19 coverage can be handy in times of need.

Are there covid-19 restrictions for u.s. tourists.

No, as of February 13, 2023, there are no COVID-19 restrictions for U.S. tourists.

Do I need a visa or passport to travel to India?

You need both a visa and a passport to travel to India . You can apply for an eVisa online. If you’re approved, you can travel in India for up to 60 days. Make sure to apply at least four days before you’re scheduled to arrive. To stay longer, you must apply for a standard tourist visa at the nearest Indian consulate or embassy.

Before you apply, check the expiration date on your passport . The document must be valid for at least six months after the application date. Indian immigration officials require two blank pages to accommodate visas and stamps.

Is it safe to visit India?

India can be a safe destination for savvy tourists — however, you must exercise a great deal of caution . Petty crime is common, as are scams. Female travelers must be especially careful as there have been many reports of sexual assault and violence against women, including tourists. The U.S. Department of State advises women to dress according to local custom and avoid traveling alone in India.

There is also a chance of terrorism and civil unrest throughout India, particularly in the northeastern states, central and eastern India and areas near the Pakistan border.

Can a US citizen buy health insurance in India?

As a citizen of the US traveling to India, it is far more beneficial for you to purchase a travel insurance policy before you leave for your vacation. Doing so prepares you for early unforeseen circumstances such as delayed flights or canceled bookings. NRIs (non-resident Indians) may be able to purchase health insurance in India. Still, as U.S. travel insurance companies are fully regulated, you are far safer securing your coverage within the states.

India does not require tourists to have travel insurance . However, traveling in India can come with a significant amount of risk. A travel insurance policy covers medical care and medical evacuation, so you can move around the country with peace of mind. If you become injured or sick, you won’t be saddled with an expensive medical bill.

Travel insurance also protects you from other unexpected circumstances that could affect your trip. If a natural disaster forces you to cancel or a political protest disrupts your plans, your policy can help reduce the financial impact.

It can also help you prepare for other risks, such as those discussed below.

Risk of pickpockets and tourist scams

Pickpockets and petty thieves run rampant in India, often targeting unsuspecting tourists. They operate in crowded tourist destinations, such as airports and famous sites like the Taj Mahal.

Tourist scams are another common occurrence in India. Scammers try to lure travelers with false promises, only to extort them for money or put them in dangerous situations. In other cases, criminals drug visitors before robbing them. Travel insurance with coverage for personal items can help pay to replace stolen items.

Risk of canceled day trips or tours

Tours and day trips are a popular way to see sights in India. Since many operators have little to no oversight, they may cancel these excursions at the last minute without reimbursing you. Certain travel insurance policies can reduce the risk of financial loss by covering nonrefundable costs for interrupted or canceled tours.

Risk of political demonstrations

Political demonstrations in India can be large and disruptive. In some cases, they affect airlines, train lines and major roadways. When a demonstration arises before or during your trip, you may have a hard time reaching your destination. In some cases, widespread protests make it too dangerous for foreigners to visit the affected areas. A travel insurance policy can help you recover the costs of canceling the trip, rebooking flights, or making unexpected hotel stays.

Risk of severe weather conditions

Many parts of India experience severe weather at various times throughout the year. In southern India, the monsoon season often brings severe flooding; the northern part of the country sees intense dust storms. Dangerous heat waves are possible across most of the country. While you can’t predict serious weather events, you can use insurance to prevent significant financial losses if storms affect your trip.

As with any type of insurance, every plan offers different types and levels of coverage.

We break down some of the most common coverage types below.

Trip cancellation insurance

Trip cancellation coverage helps you recover prepaid, nonrefundable trip costs if you have to cancel your plans. Travel to India is expensive, especially if you’re booking popular hotels and tours. If you fall ill a week before your flight and you’re too sick to travel, insurance can ensure that you don’t lose money in the process.

Trip delay insurance

This type of insurance covers the extra expenses that arise if your India trip is held up due to circumstances beyond your control. If your connecting flight from Amsterdam to New Delhi is pushed to the next day, insurance can cover a last-minute hotel booking and taxis to and from the airport. Keep your receipts, and you might also be able to get reimbursed for meals and nonrefundable hotel stays in your final destination.

Trip interruption insurance

Trip interruption coverage kicks in if unexpected circumstances require you to cut your vacation short. As long as the reason for the interruption is covered, the policy will typically refund the non-refundable costs of the rest of the trip . It might also cover the flight back to the U.S.

Travel medical insurance

If you get hurt or fall ill while you’re exploring India — a possibility, given the country’s inconsistent safety regulations — travel medical insurance covers the costs. In most cases, you’ll need to pay the healthcare bills first and file a claim for reimbursement. Some plans will work directly with the medical provider to settle bills if you need hospitalization after an accident or a bout of dengue fever.

Medical evacuation insurance

Medical evacuation coverage pays for your transportation in case of a medical emergency. It’s critical for trips to India — healthcare facilities aren’t always available away from major cities. That means if you’re injured while trekking in the Himalayas or cruising in Kerala, you may need to be transported a long distance by air to get to a hospital. When the situation is serious enough, a medical flight back to the United States may be necessary.

These services are expensive, but evacuation coverage can take care of the bill. Make sure you choose a policy with a high limit when traveling to India, particularly if you’re planning an adventurous itinerary to rural parts of the country.

Insurance for personal items

Personal item coverage helps you pay for damaged, lost or stolen belongings. Given the risk of theft and pickpocketing in India, this type of insurance is essential. Limits can vary considerably between policies; you may need to shop around to find adequate coverage if you’re packing computers, phones and cameras.

Rental car coverage

This type of insurance pays for damage to your rental car. It’s usually offered as an add-on for an extra fee, but don’t skip it if you’re renting a car in India — road conditions and driving safety are well below U.S. standards in many areas.

Every travel insurance policy comes with exclusions, which are things the plan will not cover. For example, if your policy excludes preexisting medical conditions , it won’t pay cancellation costs if you have to cancel due to a chronic health condition.

Standard travel insurance exclusions are:

  • Pregnancy (except for complications)
  • Anxiety and mental health
  • Routine medical or dental procedures
  • High-risk activities
  • Extreme sports and professional sports
  • Trips that go against medical advice
  • Storms that have already been named
  • Illegal activities

It’s also important to note that your policy might refuse to cover anything for which you don’t have the appropriate documentation. If you need to seek medical care, or you plan to file a claim for trip cancellation or interruption, call the provider immediately to ask about documentation requirements.

We found that travel insurance for a trip to India can cost as little as $1 per day for the most fundamental medical and medical evacuation coverage. A more comprehensive plan that covers trip cancellations and interruptions will cost around $7 to $11 per day.

To give you a better idea of how much travel insurance costs for a trip to India, we requested quotes from four leading travel insurance providers.

We used these details for all of our quotes:

  • Age : 35 years old
  • Destination : India
  • Trip Length : 7 days
  • Trip cost : $2,000
  • Date: September 2024

You can see our quotes for basic travel insurance in the table below. Prices range from less than $1 per day to $6 per day .

Example Where Plan Doesn’t Reimburse the Full Trip Cost

Our quotes for policies that include trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage are in the following table. Prices range from around $7 to $11 per day .

Example Where Plan Does Reimburse the Full Trip Cost

It’s important to note that the cost of India travel insurance is different for everyone.

Providers base your policy premium on factors such as:

  • Trip duration
  • Cost of the trip
  • Current health insurance
  • Elapsed time between policy purchase and first trip deposit

A wide range of providers offer travel insurance to India.

These tips can help you select a plan that provides ample coverage and peace of mind:

Research your destinations.

If you’re traveling to rural parts of India, make sure your insurance policy includes a high limit for medical evacuation. That way, you’re less likely to incur high bills for medical flights.

Check emergency procedures.

Some providers deny medical claims if you fail to call the emergency assistance line before seeking help. That’s not always possible in areas of India that don’t have cell service.

Consider how you’re traveling around India.

Travel insurance policies don’t apply to every mode of transportation. If your plans include hitching a ride or renting a motorcycle in India, make sure it’s covered in case of an accident.

Examine the risk level of activities.

Read the policy exclusions carefully to ensure that your intended activities are covered.

Buy a policy as soon as possible.

By buying as soon as you book the trip, you’ll be protected for longer. Coverage usually starts from the purchase date.

Can I use my U.S. health insurance in India?

No, you cannot use most standard U.S. health insurance policies in India.

Can a U.S. citizen buy travel insurance in India?

A few insurance providers allow you to purchase travel insurance after you’ve started your trip in India. However, you may be subject to higher fees or a waiting period before you can make a claim.

Is it better to buy travel insurance from India or U.S.A.?

It’s best to buy travel insurance for India while you’re still in the United States. You can buy it from a domestic or international provider — just make sure the company is reputable and that the policy applies to American travelers.

Travel Insurance is meant to cover your medical and financial emergencies, which might arise during your travel abroad. Here are some reasons why Travel Insurance is needed.

Let's read up!

Top reasons why you need a Travel Insurance

You may encounter sickness or injury.

There are many reasons due to which you may fall sick. Late-night flights, air conditioning, change in temperature, time zone changes and varied cuisines to name a few. The current pandemic situation demands world countries make it mandatory for the travellers to take vaccination for specific diseases beforehand. This might also make you feel ill on your travel time and require hospitalisation. A Travel Insurance plan can cover the expenses incurred due to medical emergencies or accidents during your trip. Such unexpected eventualities are covered up to a specified limit mentioned in the policy. A Travel Insurance plan coverages include expenses of in-patient and outpatient hospitalisation, daily cash allowance, transportation to the nearest hospitals and many more.

Delay or loss of checked-in luggage

A common scenario while travelling overseas or even within the country is misplaced luggage or delayed baggage. Travel Insurances usually provide coverage for your delayed or misplaced baggage. They will help you recover your misplaced bags and will also reimburse any amount spent on essential items packed in the baggage as per the terms and conditions of the policy. Thereby ensuring hassle-free travel.

Flight cancellations and delays

When travelling to different countries, you would definitely have a pre-planned itinerary.  Delayed flights or rescheduling of flight timings due to bad weather or missed connecting flights can disturb the whole trip. This may be due to a cancelled flight or any other aspect. Your Travel Insurance comes in handy here; it can reimburse the amount spent on the purchase of meals and refreshments, etc., for the period of the delay in submission of bills.

Loss of passport

If an insured loses the passport before your trip or even while you're away, the insured can reimburse the actual expenses incurred in obtaining a duplicate or fresh passport. In that way, the insurance plan can aid in avoiding financial and mental stress.

Cancelling or changing your trip before you start

You may intend to cancel your trip when you or your family members fall ill or due to natural calamities. In such cases, cancelling pre-paid air tickets is often expensive. Getting covered under a Travel Insurance plan may make you worry-free financially, as you are covered in such situations.

Emergency evacuation

Emergency evacuation is a must during cases of natural calamities like Tsunamis, earthquakes, volcanic ash clouds, political uprisings and terrorist attacks, etc. If you have an insurance cover, the insurance company takes responsibility for evacuating you back to the respective homeland and providing medical help when needed.

24/7 support

One of the benefits of Travel Insurance is access to a 24x7 emergency helpline when you are in circumstances of emergency in an unknown location in a foreign land. You can get guidance and directions even in such an adverse situation. Hence, it is essential to carry a copy of the insurance document while travelling. The helplines can fetch your details at the nearest hospital or can help you in arranging for evacuation or emergency services.

For all these reasons, Travel Insurance is essential and undoubtedly a wise investment to make before  you travel.

Do I Need Travel Insurance for India?

India is a diverse and dynamic country, where travelers may encounter unexpected challenges. While travel insurance may not be a requirement for visiting India, it's highly recommended.

Why? There are several reasons:

Medical Emergencies : Access to quality healthcare varies across India, and medical expenses can quickly add up in case of emergencies. With coverage for emergency medical expenses, travelers can seek necessary medical treatment without worrying about expensive costs.

Lost Baggage: Airlines sometimes mishandle baggage, and the last thing you want is to be without your essentials in an unfamiliar place. Travel insurance offers to cover the cost of replacing necessary items, allowing you to continue.

Lost or Stolen Luggage: India's bustling cities and crowded tourist attractions can increase the risk of theft or loss of belongings. Having coverage for lost or stolen luggage may offer financial assistance for replacing essential items.

In general, travel insurance costs about 3 – 10% of your total prepaid and non-refundable trip expenses. The cost of travel insurance depends on two factors for AXA Travel Protection plans:

Total Trip cost: The total amount of non-prepaid and non-refundable costs you have already paid for your upcoming trip. This includes prepaid excursions, plane tickets, cruise costs, etc.

Age: L ike any other insurance type, the correlation is rooted in increased health risks associated with older individuals. It's important to note that this doesn't make travel insurance unattainable for older individuals.

With AXA Travel Protection, travelers to India will be offered three tiers of insurance: Silver ,  Gold , and  Platinum . Each provides varying levels of coverage to cater to individual's preferences and travel needs.

AXA presents travelers with three travel plans – the Silver Plan ,  Gold Plan , and  Platinum Plan , each offering different levels of coverage to suit individual needs. Given that Indian hospitals often do not accept U.S. health insurance or Medicare, we genuinely recommend travelers to consider purchasing any of these plans, particularly for the crucial coverage they offer for emergency accident and sickness medical expenses.

The Platinum Plan is your go-to choice if you're looking for extra coverage for India’s experience. "Cancel for Any Reason" offers greater flexibility for those unexpected twists in your travel plans and the "Rental Car (Collision Damage Waiver)" offers assistance when you're out exploring India's stunning landscapes in a rental car.

What types of medical coverage do AXA Travel Protection plans offer?

AXA covers three types of medical expenses:

Emergency medical: Can cover unexpected events like broken bones, burns, sudden illnesses, and allergic reactions that require immediate medical attention.

Emergency evacuation and repatriation: Can cover your immediate transportation home in the event of an accidental injury or illness.

Non-medical emergency evacuation and repatriation: Can cover evacuation assistance when you must leave a place urgently due to non-medical reasons, such as natural disasters or civil unrest.

No. Travelers entering India do not need to undergo COVID-19 testing or show proof of vaccination.

Traveling with pre-existing Medical Conditions?

Traveling with preexisting medical conditions can complicate your plans, but with AXA Travel Protection, we're here to support you during your trip. Our Gold and  Platinum Plans  offer coverage for preexisting medical conditions. The Platinum plan is our highest-offered choice for travelers who want our highest coverage limits and optional add-ons,

We're here to make sure you travel with ease, no matter your health situation.

1.Can you buy travel insurance after booking a flight?

You can buy travel insurance even after your flight is booked.

2.When should I buy Travel Insurance to India?

AXA Travel Protection offers coverage as soon as you purchase your protection plan. We can give coverage against unforeseen events before you leave for your trip. Additionally, our policies offer coverage for preexisting medical conditions and Cancel for Any Reason if you purchase your protection within 14-days of making your initial trip deposit.

4.What is needed to visit India from the USA?

U.S. citizens must have a valid passport and either a valid Indian visa or an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card to enter or leave India. If visiting as tourists for less than 60 days, U.S. citizens can apply for an eVisa at least four days before arrival.

However, we strongly encourage you to do so anyway, because the cost of healthcare in India can be high, and taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself if you need medical attention during your stay.

Yes, medical travel insurance is almost always worth it, and we recommend taking out travel insurance whenever visiting a foreign country. Taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself in case you need medical attention during your stay. In general, we recommend VisitorsCoverage to travellers worldwide because it offers excellent value for money and well-rounded travel and medical benefits in its large catalogue of plans.

Health insurance doesn't cover normal holiday expenses, such as coverage for missed flights and hotels, but in case you run into medical trouble while abroad, it may cover some or all of your doctor or hospital expenses while overseas. However, not all health insurance providers and plans offer coverage to customers while abroad, and that's why it's generally best to take out travel insurance whenever you travel.

Although there's overlap, health and travel insurance are not exactly the same. Health insurance covers some or all of the cost of medical expenses (e.g. emergency treatment, doctor's visits, etc.) while travel insurance covers non-medical costs that are commonly associated with travelling (e.g. coverage for missed flights, stolen or lost personal belongings, etc.).

The cost of travel insurance depends on several factors, such as the length of the trip, the destination, the age of the traveller, and the level of coverage desired. On average, travel insurance can cost anywhere between 3% and 10% of the total cost of the trip.

A single-trip travel insurance policy covers a specific trip, while an annual one covers multiple trips taken within a one-year period. An annual policy may be more cost-effective for frequent travellers.

Yes, you can sometimes purchase travel insurance after starting your trip, but it is best to buy it before the trip begins to ensure maximum coverage. If you do need to buy insurance after you've started your trip, we recommend VisitorsCoverage , which offers a wide catalogue of online trip and medical insurance policies, most of which can be booked with immediate effect. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Yes, you can most certainly purchase travel insurance for a trip that has already been booked, although we recommend purchasing insurance as soon as possible aftwerwards to ensure all coverage is in place before your journey begins. Travel Medical Insurance

4w_m_landing_page.svg

Travel Medical Insurance, more commonly known as travel health insurance, is meant to protect the policyholder when they are travelling abroad for any purpose. Travel health insurance is useful not only for medical emergencies where one may have to get medical help or be hospitalised but also during emergency evacuations or withdrawals overseas. Globally, travel medical insurance is also known as worldwide medical insurance, international medical insurance, or international travel insurance.

What is Travel Medical Insurance

Medical contingencies are never pleasant, no matter where you are. But when you are travelling, any emergency that calls for medical attention or hospitalisation can be even more stressful than at home. This is where medical travel insurance plays an important role in protecting you against any medical emergencies when you are travelling.

Medical travel insurance is a type of travel insurance policy that provides coverage to you in case you are hospitalised due to an illness or accident while on a trip. Without this insurance policy, the medical expenses abroad can be quite high. In such a situation, travel health insurance is a useful plan that provides financial coverage and the ease of availing of medical services during your travels.

You need not necessarily be on a business trip to have medical travel insurance; you should have this cover even if you are on vacation. The policy is meant to make medical services easily available to you without the stress of extensive medical bills in case of an accidental injury or illness during your travels.

Why Do You Need Travel Health Insurance?

Travelling abroad can often be a huge expense in itself, but you may not be able to avoid going on the trip. During your trip, any additional expenses can be a huge financial burden. Hence, here are some crucial scenarios that explain why you need travel health insurance when travelling abroad:

Coverage for illness and sickness : If and when you are diagnosed with a COVID-19 infection during the course of your trip and need to be hospitalised, the medical expenses incurred by you will be covered under the accident and sickness medical coverage feature. Apart from that, if you fall sick, face a medical emergency or meet with an accident that needs you to be hospitalised, these expenses will also be covered. Moreover, if the policy expires during your stay in the hospital, you will be covered until the next 60 days or till the time you are discharged, whichever is sooner.

If you lose your passport or baggage : Losing your baggage or misplacing your passport during a trip is not unheard of. However, travel health insurance can help ease out the mental stress and the financial loss in such a situation. In case of a lost passport, the insurance coverage will compensate the cost for a duplicate or new passport, while some important personal items from your lost baggage can be reimbursed monetarily.

Emergency medical evacuation : Travel insurance can be beneficial if you need to be moved to a hospital when travelling abroad. Not just that, if you need to come back to India for further medical treatment, this too can be covered by your travel health insurance.

Cancellation or delay of flight : A delay or cancellation of your flight can be due to bad weather, some problems with the airline, or any other unforeseen reason. Your travel health insurance policy will reimburse these losses. Also, if you have to cancel your flight due to a family emergency, the cost of the ticket and accommodation booked in advance will be reimbursed by the coverage.

Features of International Travel Health Insurance in India

Travel health insurance plans are very flexible and offer extensive coverage as per your needs. Below are a few salient features that are found in travel health insurance plans in India:

Access to cashless hospitalisation facility : If you are protected by travel health insurance in India and face a medical emergency due to which you need to be hospitalised, you do not have to worry about paying for the expenses from your own pocket. The insurance plan will provide a cashless hospitalisation facility, wherein the medical expenses will be settled by the insurance cover directly with the hospital.

Available for occasional or frequent travellers : A lot of travel health insurance plans can be customised to meet the needs of occasional and frequent travellers alike. Tata AIG’s domestic travel insurance policies are flexible and provide coverage for single trips for occasional travellers as well as multiple trips for regular travellers.

All-day medical assistance : Irrespective of where you are travelling, the insurance policy ensures that you can be covered for 24/7 medical assistance in case such a medical emergency arises.

Types of International Medical Travel Insurance

Travel health insurance can vary according to your needs and your duration of travel. Hence, you can choose from the two types of travel health insurance plans so that you receive adequate coverage on your trip!

Single Trip Travel Health Insurance : If you are making a single trip to another country and need insurance cover for only that trip, then it is referred to as a single trip travel health insurance. The coverage of this type of insurance starts with the trip and ends once you come home.

Multi-trip Travel Health Insurance : A multi-trip travel health insurance is a policy that is generally taken for a year and provides insurance for multiple trips. However, there is a limit on the number of days for each of the trips and can go up to 30 or 45 days.

Family Travel Health Insurance : Our family travel health insurance covers up to 6 family members per policy. Whether you choose a domestic travel insurance policy or an international travel insurance policy, you and your family can be covered under the same plan.

Student Travel Health Insurance : Students travelling abroad for further education can look at Tata AIG's Student Travel Insurance policy. Apart from medical emergencies and illnesses leading to hospitalisation, this plan also covers tuition fees in case of medical emergencies as well as compassionate visits from family members.

Senior Citizen Health Insurance : A senior citizen travel health insurance plan is designed to look after the needs of senior citizens who are travelling abroad. Not only do these policies cover emergency medical expenses, but they also cover emergency medical evacuation and repatriation of remains. Personal Liability : If there is a damage claim legally filed against you by another party for damage to their property or any medical expenses due to accidental bodily injuries, then the travel medical insurance policy can cover these losses.

Exclusion of Travel Health Insurance

When you purchase medical travel insurance online, be sure to read the list of exclusions so that you are not stranded in a difficult situation while travelling:

Travelling against medical counsel : If you travel abroad against the advice of your doctor or before the prescribed waiting period is over, the insurance policy cannot cover the medical emergency arising out of this situation.

Pre-existing illnesses : Any complications arising out of a pre-existing medical condition cannot be covered by the travel health insurance policy. However, in case of a life threatening situation arising from a pre-existing condition, the travel health insurance coverage is capped at $1500.

Consumption of intoxicants : If you face a medical emergency due to the consumption of intoxicants or medication that is not prescribed by a physician, then the insurance policy cannot protect you during this emergency.

War or Civil Unrest : The travel insurance plan cannot protect you from losses arising out of wars, civil unrest, invasion, and other such hostilities.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases : Our travel health insurance policies do not cover Sexually Transmitted Diseases such as HIV/AIDS.

Injuries from intentional self-harm : Any attempt at self-harm leading to injuries cannot be under travel medical insurance.

Alternative treatments : If you choose to get treatment through Ayurveda, Unani or other alternative treatments, then the insurance policy cannot cover these costs.

Adventure sports : Your travel health insurance may not cover accidents or injuries that have occurred due to an attempt at extreme or dangerous adventure sports.

Mental illnesses : Any therapy or treatment for a mental illness such as depression, anxiety, etc., during the trip cannot be covered under the policy.

Overseas Travel Medical Insurance Coverage for Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Tata AIG’s international travel plans offer COVID 19 coverage, which can protect you in the following scenarios:

Medical Expenses due to Accidents & Sickness : You can be easily covered for COVID 19 emergencies under our international travel medical insurance plans. If you are affected by COVID 19 during a trip outside the country and need to be hospitalised for the same, the medical expenses will be covered under the plan. However, there is a limit on the amount for the coverage in the policy.

Trip Cancellation Coverage : If you are covered by a group travel medical insurance, and in case your trip or that of your travel companion or an immediate family member has to be cancelled before commencement due to a COVID-19 infection, the coverage reimburses the non-refundable and the unused amount of the hotel bookings, tickets, etc. But do note that these expenses will only be reimbursed if the bookings were made prior to being diagnosed with COVID-19.

Trip Curtailment/Interruption Benefits : If you have a group travel medical insurance and you, your family, or your travel companion are diagnosed with a COVID 19 infection due to which the trip has to be curtailed or cut short, the insurance cover will reimburse the remaining expenses of the unused bookings and tickets. What is an International Travel Insurance Policy?

An international travel insurance policy is your trustworthy, reliable and mandatory companion for your trip abroad. Imagine this: You are travelling to a foreign country for leisure or personal business or studies. You don't want anything to ruin your trip and taint your happy memories. But unexpected things happen. You may fall sick or lose your passport or miss your flight! An international travel health insurance policy helps you deal with financial stress and worries caused by such situations. It protects you in unexpected and untimely situations in an unfamiliar city with language barriers. An international travel medical insurance plan covers flight delays, lost or delayed baggage, lost passport, trip interruptions, medical expenses and trip cancellations.

Reliance General Insurance is here to ensure you have a wonderful stay and worry-free travel experience. Our international travel insurance plans will help you deal with any baggage or trip or medical contingencies. Be it a delay of checked-in baggage, lost baggage, cancelled flight, delayed flight, missed connecting flights, passport loss, emergency hospitalisation, trip interruption or trip cancellation, we will be there for you.

Why Do You Need Travel Insurance When Going Abroad?

Travel insurance is an insurance policy that provides financial protection to travellers during their international stay or trips. Imagine you’re all set to enjoy a vacation at an exotic destination and unexpected events disrupt your travel plans: You miss your flight or have to delay your trip due to weather conditions or get hospitalised during your stay abroad due to some medical emergency. A travel insurance plan ensures that none of the trip or medical contingencies cause any financial burden to you. It covers you from the moment you reach the airport till you’re safely back to India from your trip.

Here are some key reasons why buying a travel insurance policy is important when going abroad:

Mandatory by Law

Some countries have made it mandatory for travellers to have a valid travel health insurance plan before entering their borders. For example, it is a prerequisite to purchase medical travel insurance to enter countries like Russia, Singapore, the UAE, Romania and Cuba regardless of the purpose of your visit. The main reason behind making travel insurance mandatory in some countries is to financially secure foreign visitors from unexpected events like passport loss or theft, lost or misplaced luggage, trip delay or cancellations, medical emergencies or accidents and COVID-19 like situations.

Visa Requirements

While there are countries that offer visa on arrival to India, many countries require you to buy a travel insurance policy to initiate the visa application process. For example, it is compulsory to have travel medical insurance with a minimum medical coverage of EUR 30,000 to get a Schengen Visa. This will allow you freely in any of the Schengen countries, including Switzerland, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Portugal and Denmark. Other countries where travel health insurance is mandatory for the visa process include Turkey, Czech Republic, Ecuador, UAE, etc.

Cost of Medical Treatments

Medical expenses can be quite high in foreign countries than in India. The potentially high cost of medical treatments in case of unexpected illness or injury or accidental dental issues, not only increases your financial burden but also leaves you feeling helpless during your international vacation. An international travel medical insurance plan acts as a shield against unforeseen medical bills by offering cover for emergency medical hospitalisation, the cost of transporting the nearest hospital or back to India, and dental treatment due to an accident on your trip.

Coverages Offered

Besides offering international medical coverage, international travel insurance policies offer coverage for various baggage and trip-related contingencies. You lose your checked-in baggage or someone mistakenly takes your luggage or the airline delays or misdirects your checked-in baggage. Similarly, you may miss your connecting flight to your final travel destination or your trip may get delayed or interrupted or cancelled because of conditions that are beyond your control. All of these situations are covered under our plan.

How to Choose an International Travel Insurance Policy?

Selecting the right overseas travel insurance is a crucial for securing your trip abroad. It is important to choose an international travel insurance policy that offers comprehensive coverage and high sum insured instead of a cheap international travel insurance that doesn’t protect you adequately. So, how do you choose the right online international travel insurance? Here are a few pointers for you:

Check International Travel Insurance Policy Coverage

Check if the international travel health insurance policy covers emergency medical expenses, passport loss, baggage delays, baggage loss, trip cancellations, trip delays, trip interruptions, etc. We recommend you to look for comprehensive coverage when buying an international travel insurance online. For example, if you face a situation where the airline has misplaced your checked-in luggage, then our Reliance Travel Care Policy will help you get reimbursed for the lost baggage.

Look for Medical Emergency and Dental Treatment Covers

Best international travel insurance plans offer cover for a wide range of medical contingencies. You could get admitted in the hospital due to some accident or sudden illness and your travel plan should cover you for the hospitalisation expenses. Even if you need emergency dental treatment while on your trip then your international travel insurance should reimburse you for that. Make sure you get a plan that covers you for all of the previously mentioned scenarios (check out the Reliance Travel Care Policy for all these covers)

Choose Need-Based Sum Insured

Every international travel insurance plan has a Sum Insured, which is the maximum amount that an insurance company will pay toward a claim. The higher the Sum Insured, the better financial protection you get against medical emergencies and other trip-related contingencies. While we recommend you to choose an online international travel insurance policy that offers a high Sum Insured of up to $500,000, you need to select a plan based on your requirements.

Evaluate Claim Settlement Process

You should always check the travel insurer’s claim settlement ratio and process before buying international travel insurance online. A higher settlement ratio and a smoother claim procedure will ensure your claim is successfully processed.

How to Buy International Travel Insurance Policy Online?

Buying international travel insurance for your upcoming trip isn’t as easy as buying your favourite chocolate. You need to choose the right travel insurance that meets your requirements while giving comprehensive protection during your stay abroad. That’s why we’ve made it simple to buy overseas travel insurance online – just follow our step-by-step guide and you’re good to go.

Step 1: Scroll to the top of this page and enter your details including travel type, mobile number, email ID and travel destination.

Step 2: Choose your preferred plan type and click on ‘Buy Now’.

Step 3: Check your premium details, enter your personal details and choose your preferred mode of payment.

Step 4: Get your international travel health insurance policy for your upcoming trip.

Factors that Affect Your Travel Insurance Premiums

Your international travel insurance premium is influenced by a combination of factors like the country you’re travelling to, your age and the duration of your trip. Check out the list below to know in detail how each factor affects your premiums:

Your Travel Destination

The country you choose as your travel destination affects your international travel insurance premium as each country carries its own risk, which the insurer assesses. Therefore, your premium will go higher if you’re travelling across USA and Canada in comparison to travelling to Asian destinations.

Length of Your Stay

Your international travel insurance premium is affected by your trip duration. A shorter trip results in lower premiums because the chances of risk is lower and the opposite applies for longer trips where the risk is higher. If you spend more time in your holiday destination, there is a higher risk of injury or illness since you’ll be out travelling to enjoy your holiday.

Age of Traveller(s)

The age of all travelling members plays a role in the premiums too. Older people are associated with medical higher risk as they have a high probability of having pre-existing diseases, therefore the premiums for them would be higher. On the other hand, younger travellers will have lower premiums as they are usually fitter and have a low medical risk.

Type of Insurance Plan

Different international travel health insurance plans cover different needs. If you’re a student going abroad for education, then we have an international travel insurance plan for students. If you take multiple trips in a year, then we have an annual multi-trip travel insurance plan . The premium changes based on your need and the type of insurance plan for that need.

Sum Insured

Every travel insurance policy has different plans that offer varying amounts of the Sum Insured. The Sum Insured is the maximum value that an insurance company will pay towards your claim. The claim could be related to flight delays, missed connecting flights, trip delays or interruptions, medical expenses, lost passport, loss or delay of checked-in baggage. So when the Sum Insured is high, the premium will be higher.

However if you are involved in extreme sports like bungee jumping, mountaineering, air gliding or ballooning, and meet with an accident, then the policy won't cover you. Here's a complete list of hazardous activities which are not covered under the basic policy.

In case you do lose your passport, your policy will reimburse you for actual expenses necessarily and reasonably incurred to get a duplicate or fresh passport.

However, the international travel insurance policy will not cover you if your passport:

  • is confiscated or detained by customs officials, police offers or police authorities
  • is lost on account of it being left unattended or forgotten in a public place or transport, hotel, apartment or a private place or vehicle
  • has been robbed and you have not reported the incident to the local police within 24 hours of the event. We will require a copy of the report when you make the claim.

Your policy provides a reimbursement for delays in transportation of checked-in baggage beyond 12 hours. This is valid across all travel destinations that are mentioned in your ticket, including all halts as well.

This cover for delay will not be available in the following cases:

  • If your baggage is lost, unless a Property Irregularity Report or equivalent report, issued by carrier, is procured and submitted.
  • If there is partial loss of the items contained in the checked-in baggage.
  • If items contained in the checked-in baggage, valued in excess of US $100, do not have appropriate proof of ownership.

Your  international travel insurance policy pays or reimburses only for a delay in transportation of checked-in baggage accepted by a common carrier by which you/insured would be traveling. As long as you are travelling by "Common Carrier" means any scheduled commercial airline or ship or vessel operating under a license from the relevant authority for the transportation of passengers for hire you stay covered.

Your international travel insurance has a personal liability cover that protects your liability under accidents that result in death, injury, damage to health or damage to the property of a third party. This also covers any hospitalisation expenses in case of any accidental injury.

Yes, it does. Your hospitalisation expenses will be covered in a quick and cashless manner. If you have been hospitalised for more than 2 consecutive days, you can even avail of a daily allowance subject to plan opted.

No, since this is a special service that provides assistance in times of financial emergency that may arise due to theft or robbery you will not be able to avail this cover if you’re short of funds/cash.

In case your flight is hijacked, your policy will compensate you, up to the maximum amount as mentioned in your policy, post the first 12 hours of hijacking.

If your plan covers home burglary, your house and valuables are covered for burglary or attempted burglary, up to the limit of sum insured. Please note that the cover does not protect you from losses sustained due to fire or other perils.

If you opt for the ‘Study Interruption’ cover, it provides you compensation in case:

  • you are hospitalised for more than one consecutive month on account of any disease, illness, injury, terminal sickness or medical repatriation,
  • an immediate family member or your sponsor expires, leading you to discontinue your studies for the remaining part of the current semester, the tuition fee for which has been paid.

Pregnancy, childbirth and any consequences thereof unless the medical assistance provided abroad involves unforeseen emergency measures to save the Insured/Insured Person's or the child's life in the event of acute complications, provided that the Insured/Insured Person has not completed the age of 38 years and 30th week of the pregnancy is not yet completed.

If any illness / injury during the policy period abroad necessitates curative treatment beyond duration of this insurance, the Company's liability to pay benefits within the scope of this Policy shall extend for a further period of 30 days insofar as it can be proved that transportation home is not possible. Emergency Assistance Service Provider must be notified immediately as soon as it is known that Insured / Insured Person is unfit to return to India. If any new illness / injury is contracted beyond duration of this Policy, treatment for the same will not be covered.

In such a case, if the death or disablement occurs within 12 months from the start date of the policy, the company will process the claim as per terms and conditions of the policy in favour of beneficiary/nominee mentioned in the policy.

In the event the Insured/Insured Person is hospitalized for more than 7 consecutive days, and his/her medical condition forbids repatriation and no adult member of his/her immediate family is present, the Company after obtaining confirmation of need for a companion from the attending doctor and the Emergency Assistance Service Provider, will provide:

a) a round trip economy class air ticket, or first class railway ticket, to allow one immediate family member, during the entire period of insurance, to be at his/her bedside for the duration of stay in the Hospital;

Yes. Please read your policy document carefully to understand what risks you're covered for and what is not covered. Ensure that you have the cover you need.

No, an international policy is not extendable for domestic travel. Any medical or accident policy that you may have, will cover you for the relevant benefits, while you are travelling within the country.

No, the policy will not cover any expenses if there is passport loss in India.

There are various online methods to pay your premium and they are:

  • Credit/debit cards
  • Net banking

You can decide on the scope of the insurance based on your financial needs. Factors you should take into account are the number of travel days, the country you’re travelling to and type of risks you want to be covered for.

The policy cannot be extended online. The premium depends on the plan, age, geographical coverage and the number of days of primary policy opted and the extension number of days sought.

Currently there are no discounts available on our travel insurance plans however our travel plans come at nominal premiums with an extensive coverage and a high sum insured.

We have global network of Third-Party Administrators (TPA) who assist our customers to settle their claims abroad (the final decision on any claim made will be after receiving and assessment of all the documents).

You have two options here. You can go cashless by immediately intimating us in case of a medical emergency or loss. Following that we can process your cashless treatment in a hospital. You can also get your bills reimbursed after you clear your expenses from your own pocket. You can opt for reimbursement for facilities like OPD and doctor consultation which cost lower than a hospitalisation.

From the date of receipt of the last documents, it will take approximately 30 working days for the final settlement of the claim.

The original ticket/ boarding pass or a copy of the passport indicating the travel dates i.e. visa with entry and exit stamp plus the original bills and vouchers must be submitted along with the completed claim form for all claims.

Any other document(s) that we require from you to process the claim may be asked for, if we or the Service Provider requests that bills/ vouchers in a foreign language be accompanied by an appropriate translation then the same will be borne by claimant.

For medical claims: Medical Practitioner's Consultation notes, Original admission/ discharge card, Original Bills/ receipts with prescriptions and diagnostic/ investigative reports along with mandatory documents as claim form, copy of passport/ visa with entry and exit stamp and copy of the ticket and boarding pass.

Any other documentation as deemed necessary by the Company.

Any claim due to or arising out of pre-existing medical condition/ailment whether declared or undeclared is not covered under the policy. However, life-threatening conditions arising out of a declared pre-existing disease that necessitates emergency medical procedures will be covered.

No such pre-approval is required before hospital admission in case of any medical emergency. Registration of claim is required to avail benefits under the policy. Please call the given numbers in the policy schedule to register your claim and confirm your coverage under the policy as soon as possible upon hospitalisation, intimation can be done even by sending an email or making a call to our 24x7 emergency assistance partner on provided email address or toll-free numbers. Please refer to the policy schedule for contact details.

A sub-limit is a limit placed on a specific type of coverage within an insurance policy. In travel insurance, a sub-limit is placed on the coverage for medical expenses for insured members of a specific age. So older members will be able to utilise only part of the sum insured amount for a medical emergency because of a sub-limit.

The claim procedure involves intimation and settlement.

The first step you take is to inform the Emergency Service Assistance Provider (EASP) by calling them on the Help Line number or via email. The hospital has to get in touch with the EASP and confirm if they want to accept the cashless facility and submit all the medical documents and bills to the EASP. Post this, the EASP will assess the claim and place a Guarantee of Pay (GoP) to the hospital.

In case the hospital does not agree to the EASP’s GoP, you can settle the bill with the hospital and later get reimbursed from Reliance General Insurance.

Medical Assistance & Emergency Services are provided by our Service Provider, Europ Assistance who are at your Service 24*7 during trip duration. Do I Need Travel Insurance for India?

Travel insurance plans are not required to visit India. However, travel insurance can protect you from losing nonrefundable costs if your trip gets interrupted or you experience a health emergency. Most U.S. health insurance plans do not cover medical expenses overseas, like if you require hospitalization or emergent care. But you can add protection by purchasing a travel insurance policy with emergency medical coverage.

It’s important to check policy documents regarding participation in activities such as adventure sports and motorbike riding, which insurance may not cover. However, even if you’re simply exploring Delhi, heat exhaustion or minor incidents may require medical treatment you can cover by filing a travel insurance claim.

Travel insurance can reimburse some or all prepaid costs for trip delays or cancellations. So you won’t have to rely on airline policies to recoup losses if your flight to India is delayed or canceled for reasons outside your control. A policy can also cover a delay of checked-in baggage and lost or stolen belongings.

Cancel for Any Reason Coverage

Most travel insurance providers offer cancel for any reason (CFAR) coverage , which covers nonrefundable trip costs without limits on why you need to cancel.

Standard travel insurance coverage includes cancellation for predetermined reasons, including the death of a family member or a personal accident or illness. But CFAR coverage allows you to cancel plans for reasons outside your policy. So if you cancel your trip to India to go to Canada or Thailand instead, your insurance company is more likely to reimburse travel costs if you have CFAR coverage.

CFAR is subject to rules that vary among different travel insurance providers. Rules may include exclusions and time limits, such as a requirement to cancel within 48 or 72 hours of your vacation start date. It is typically offered as a policy add-on, which may increase your insurance premium.

Gear Theft Protection

Travel insurance also offers coverage for valuable items and expensive equipment so you can travel to India with added peace of mind. Gear theft protection is useful if you’re traveling with valuables such as:

  • Smartphones
  • Professional cameras and video equipment
  • Adventure sports gear

Check your international travel insurance plan for inclusions, exclusions and the sum insured. Certain travel policies may not cover everything, like the full cost of stolen valuables after your deductible. Generally, reimbursement includes items that are damaged, lost or stolen through common carriers such as airlines or tour organizations. Many travelers leave items at home or locked in hotel rooms if they are too valuable to lose.

Medical Emergency Insurance and Emergency Medical Evacuation

According to the U.S. Department of State , the quality of medical care in India varies depending on your location. You may have an easier time finding medical care in more populated cities versus rural areas. But regardless of your location, travel medical insurance can cover health emergencies and help you avoid significant medical costs.

Policies may vary regarding coverage of pre-existing diseases or medical conditions. Standard medical coverage typically includes:

  • Hospital fees
  • Operating room charges and anesthesia
  • Dental emergencies
  • Lab tests and X-rays
  • Accidental death and dismemberment

Most travel health insurance plans include emergency medical evacuation and repatriation if local medical care isn’t available or you need to fly back to your home country.

Rental Car Protection

Many people choose to explore India via a guided tour or with private drivers due to traffic conditions, specifically in big cities. The country requires that rental car companies provide third-party personal liability insurance to cover deaths, injuries or property damage while using rented vehicles. However, companies may offer you the option to purchase additional rental car coverage.

Depending on the type of car insurance and coverage you choose, premium plans may include the following:

  • Collision damage waiver and theft protection
  • Tire and windshield protection
  • Roadside protection
  • Personal effects coverage

As a separate safeguard, a standard travel insurance policy generally includes rental vehicle coverage to reimburse you for stolen or damaged cars. Some policies may offer this coverage as a policy add-on, which costs extra.

Trip Cancellation Insurance

Trip cancellation insurance covers nonrefundable trip costs (like your flight or hotel) if your trip to India gets canceled unexpectedly. Coverage extends to the insured person or policyholder for a limited number of reasons, including:

  • Death of family members
  • Hospitalization or serious illness
  • Severe weather conditions preventing departure
  • Jury or military duty
  • Domestic or international terrorism (such as a hijack at air or sea)

Opt for CFAR coverage for more general cancellations, like a compassionate visit to someone in the hospital, concerns about pre-existing conditions or simply changing your mind. Note that your policy may not cover cancellations due to certain natural disasters (such as flash flooding in India) if you travel after a known event.

How Much Does India Travel Insurance Cost?

The cost of India travel insurance largely depends on your trip details and personal risk factors. For example, a senior citizen who requires a regular check-up for pre-existing medical conditions may pay more for a policy, whereas student travel insurance is generally the cheapest.

Plan options may include single-trip travel insurance for a one-time visit to India. Or if you’re traveling from Schengen countries to Australia and then onto India, you might find multi-trip travel insurance more cost-effective. In this example, a U.S. citizen would not need a Schengen visa to travel between countries but would require a tourist visa to enter India .

We requested quotes from ten travel insurance companies for their most affordable plan for a trip to India. The below quotes are for a 30-year-old traveler from Florida, traveling to India for ten days in September 2024, with a total trip cost of $4,000. Policies include coverage for cancellations, interruptions, delays, medical care and evacuation.

These quotes were collected in April 2024 for a trip in September 2024.

Keep in mind that your cost may vary depending on your personal details and trip duration or end date. If you are on a budget, check out our picks for cheap travel insurance options .

How Do I Get Travel Insurance for India?

When planning your vacation to India, check your credit cards and health insurance as you may already have some forms of coverage. Some credit card companies extend certain travel coverages, and private health insurance may extend to emergencies abroad. You can also buy travel insurance directly through your airline when purchasing flight tickets.

If you decide to purchase travel insurance, take your time to shop around and compare plans. It’s important to check your policy wording for coverage exclusions so you are not surprised during the claims process. For example, policies may include varying coverages for lost baggage , which can affect how much you receive in a claim settlement.

The right travel insurance policy for you should take into account your personal needs. If you plan to hike or participate in sporting activities, look for coverage that includes medical emergencies and sporting gear. Or find a trip plan with optional CFAR coverage if unexpected trip interruptions are a concern.

Travel insurance covers expenses for medical assistance and hospitalization that will be helpful in case of sudden illness or injury on a trip abroad.

#2. Personal Accident Cover

Travel insurance compensates medical expenses in the event an accident that results in death or permanent disability.

#3. Baggage Loss or Delay

Travel insurance bears the approximate cost of goods if the checked-in baggage is lost by the airline. The cover commences from the time the check-in baggage is handed to the airlines and ends when you collect the bag at the airport.

The insurer pays you a fixed allowance in case of delay in receipt of check-in baggage. The delay should be for more than 6 hours for domestic and 12 hours for the international location from the arrival of the plane.

#4. Trip Delay or Cancellation

Under travel insurance, the insurer reimburses the expenses incurred if the trip is delayed for more than 8 hours re-scheduling of flights.

The cancellation covers official cancellation charges and additional transportation expenses incurred for returning back to India. Cancellation can be due to natural peril, death or hospitalization of the person insured or of an immediate family member.

#5. Passport Loss

The insurance company reimburses the actual expenses incurred for obtaining a duplicate or the fresh passport.

#6. Emergency Medical Evacuation

You get cover for the cost incurred for an ambulance or any other emergency transportation in case of illness or injury on a trip abroad.

#7. Missed Connecting Flights

Covers in case of failure to access the connecting flight, arising due to delayed arrival of the earlier flight. This can be due to reasons beyond the control of the person insured.

#8. Emergency Cash Advances

Covers financial emergency due to accidental loss of money during the trip. The insurance is in the form of a fixed daily allowance.

#9. Repatriation of Mortal Remains

In case of unfortunate death, the travel insurance covers the cost of transporting the dead body back to the country of residence. The insurance also covers the amount equivalent to a local burial or cremation where the death has occurred.

#10. Compassionate Visit

The insurance covers the cost for the visit of an immediate family member in the event of being hospitalized for more than 5 days.

Things You Should Consider While Buying Travel Insurance

#1. covers for pre-existing medical conditions.

Disclosing pre-existing is helpful while taking travel insurance.

So if you or any member of the family is looking for a foreign trip on a pre-existing medical condition check the insurer who has coverage for specific medical conditions.

#2. Limits on Trip Duration

One should know the travel need like a single visit or a frequent visit. Also travelling solo or with the family affects the insurance requirements.

Travel insurance policies are of three types

  • Single Trip travel insurance for occasional travel with less than 6 months of coverage.
  • Multi-trip travel insurance for frequent visit. The policy gives an annual cover and premiums are higher and are required to be paid each year. However, under a multi-trip plan, every single trip is capped at 30 to 90 days of the visit.
  • Family travel insurance is a floater policy having the benefit of global travel insurance for the entire family.

#3. Level of Cover for Adventure Activity

This is especially important if you are going to take part in adventure sports such as sky diving, bungee jumping, river rafting or scuba diving while travelling abroad.

Check for travel insurance which covers for such activities. Certain insurers may clearly exclude such activity or may charge an additional premium.

#4. Individual Claim Limits

Certain claims have predefined amount limits like loss of baggage, wallet, missed flights and cancelled flights.

Do check individual payout limits for each item separately. If required you can avail separate insurance for those items.

#5. Cover for Loss of Personal Belongings

The insurer expects that you take proper care of your belongings and thus covers only accidental losses and theft. In the case of negligence, the insurer may refuse the claim.

#6. Travel Destinations

The different destination has a different level of perceived risk and hospitalization costs. Like healthcare is costly in the USA, UK and Australia compared to countries in the middle east or southeast region requiring larger insurance amount. Requiring you to pay a higher premium.

Likewise, if you are travelling to destinations prone to natural disasters or socio-political volatilities, then a higher premium is charged.

Do remember to check the excluded destinations. Yes, insurers do not cover all foreign locations under travel insurance.

#7. Background of the Insurance Company

Before finalizing the travel insurance do check the solvency of the insurer. Also, consider insurance company who can provide additional benefits in terms of free support in a foreign country and free cover for children, etc.

When Should You Buy the Best Travel Insurance in India

For regular domestic travel to cities, you may not require travel insurance.

But when you are travelling to a hill station or engaging in risky adventure sports like hiking, scuba diving, skydiving, bungee jumping or trekking then surely you need to buy travel insurance irrespective of whether you are travelling in India or abroad.

The few occasions where you can think of skipping travel insurance are

  • When your premium credit card offers travel insurance or specific travel coverage
  • If the airline covers loss of baggage, delayed arrival, flight or trip cancellation
  • If you have a global  healthcare insurance plan  to bear all the medical expenses.

All the plans have some unique offerings if I had to pick then I would have purchased TATA AIG travel insurance plans.

Reason being that it also gives $2000 covers for fraudulent charges on payment card which is valuable in case of card getting compromised while abroad.

Visitor Guard® alerts Summer 2024 Visitors to the US about reduced medical cover for pre-existing conditions

A pre-existing condition is any medical condition you have been diagnosed with or treated for before purchasing travel insurance..

Visitor Guard® alerts Summer 2024 Visitors to the US about reduced medical cover for pre-existing conditions

Visitor Guard®, a leading provider of travel insurance for international visitors to the US, is urging summer travelers from India to carefully review their medical coverage, particularly regarding pre-existing conditions, before embarking on their US adventure.

Recent industry trends indicate a potential reduction in coverage for pre-existing conditions offered by visitor insurance plans. Most visitor insurance plans offer coverage for the acute onset of only non-chronic pre-existing conditions. This could leave Indian visitors, especially senior citizens vulnerable to significant financial burdens in case of a medical emergency due to a chronic pre-existing condition during their US trip.

"Traveling to the US is a dream for many Indian parents, and unforeseen medical situations can quickly turn that dream into a nightmare," says Chiranth Nataraj , the founder of Visitor Guard®. "Our company is committed to ensuring visitors have peace of mind knowing they are protected financially in case of an unexpected medical event. However, we are deeply concerned about the potential decrease in coverage for pre-existing conditions offered by some travel insurance providers."

A pre-existing condition is any medical condition you have been diagnosed with or treated for before purchasing travel insurance. Some common examples include high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, and allergies. Visitor insurance plans do not offer any coverage for pre-existing conditions. However, some plans may offer limited coverage for acute onset of pre-existing conditions up to a certain age limit.

Medical care in the US can be exceptionally expensive. Even a minor medical issue can result in substantial bills for doctor visits, medications, or hospital stays. Visitor insurance with comprehensive coverage can offer crucial financial protection for international visitors, helping them avoid the stress and burden of unexpected medical expenses.

Visitor Guard® advises Indian travelers coming to the US to take the following steps to ensure they have adequate medical coverage. Carefully review the details of the plan before purchasing it. Pay close attention to the acute onset of the pre-existing conditions section and understand the level of coverage provided.

If you are considering buying a plan from us, Visitor Protect is one of the plans that covers pre-existing conditions for doctor visits or prescription refills up to 70 years and older. Other plans like Safe Travels USA Comprehensive, Patriot America, Atlas America, Safe Travels USA, and others offer coverage only for an acute onset of pre-existing conditions. Nevertheless, each plan has distinct definition for both pre-existing conditions and acute onset of the pre-existing condition, hence reviewing the brochure is recommended.

If you are unsure about any aspect of travel insurance coverage, especially regarding pre-existing conditions, consult with a travel insurance professional who can help you find the right plan for your needs.

"At Visitor Guard®, we understand the importance of comprehensive medical coverage, especially for Indian seniors with pre-existing conditions," states Mr Nataraj. "We remain committed to offering a wide range of visitor insurance plans designed to provide peace of mind and financial protection for all international visitors to the US, regardless of their medical history."

About Visitor Guard®

Visitor Guard® is a leading provider of travel insurance for international visitors to the United States. We offer a variety of comprehensive travel insurance plans designed to protect visitors from a range of unexpected events, including medical emergencies, medical evacuations, repatriations, trip interruptions, and travel delays.

The Dangers and Consequences of Triple Riding in India

Triple Riding in India

5 Reasons Why You Should Not Ride Triple-Seat On Two-Wheelers

Safety concerns.

  • Triple riding significantly compromises the stability and balance of the two-wheeler, increasing the likelihood of accidents.
  • In the event of a crash, occupants are at a much higher risk of sustaining severe injuries or fatalities due to lack of protective gear and proper seating arrangements.
  • The additional weight and uneven distribution can impede the rider's ability to maneuver the vehicle safely, especially in unpredictable traffic conditions.

Legal Ramifications

  • Triple riding violates traffic regulations enforced by the Indian government. Offenders can face fines, license suspension, or even imprisonment depending on the severity of the violation.
  • Law enforcement agencies have ramped up efforts to curb this practice by conducting regular checks and imposing strict penalties on violators.
  • Moreover, being involved in an accident while triple riding can lead to legal liabilities and civil suits, further complicating the legal aftermath.

Impact on Insurance Coverage*

  • Even if a policyholder has purchased comprehensive coverage, the insurer may refuse to honor the claim if the accident occurred while triple riding.
  • Utilising a two wheeler insurance calculator before renewing a policy can help individuals understand the coverage limitations and exclusions associated with their insurance plan.

Increased Vulnerability to Accidents

  • Triple riding not only endangers the occupants of the two-wheeler but also poses a significant threat to other road users.
  • The limited space and compromised visibility make it challenging for the rider to anticipate and react to potential hazards on the road.
  • Sudden movements or swerving to avoid obstacles can result in loss of control, putting everyone in the vicinity at risk of a collision.

Social Responsibility

  • By engaging in triple riding, individuals disregard their responsibility towards ensuring road safety and adherence to traffic laws.
  • Setting a precedent for risky behaviour normalises recklessness among other road users, contributing to a culture of impunity and disregard for regulations.
  • Encouraging friends and family members to prioritise safety and comply with traffic guidelines can help foster a culture of responsible road behavior.

Riding Your Two-Wheeler Safely

Always wear helmets, observe weight limits, follow traffic rules, avoid distractions, educate others.

Hot Oceans Worsened Dubai’s Dramatic Flooding, Scientists Say

An international team of researchers found that heavy rains had intensified in the region, though they couldn’t say for sure how much climate change was responsible.

Trucks under water with a bridge in the background.

By Raymond Zhong

Scenes of flood-ravaged neighborhoods in one of the planet’s driest regions stunned the world this month. Heavy rains in the United Arab Emirates and Oman submerged cars, clogged highways and killed at least 21 people. Flights out of Dubai’s airport, a major global hub, were severely disrupted.

The downpours weren’t a total surprise — forecasters had anticipated the storms several days earlier and issued warnings. But they were certainly unusual.

Here’s what to know.

Heavy rain there is rare, but not unheard-of.

On average, the Arabian Peninsula receives a scant few inches of rain a year, although scientists have found that a sizable chunk of that precipitation falls in infrequent but severe bursts, not as periodic showers. These rains often come during El Niño conditions like the ones the world is experiencing now.

U.A.E. officials said the 24-hour rain total on April 16 was the country’s largest since records there began in 1949 . And parts of the nation had already experienced an earlier round of thunderstorms in March.

Oman, with its coastline on the Arabian Sea, is also vulnerable to tropical cyclones. Past storms there have brought torrential rain, powerful winds and mudslides, causing extensive damage.

Global warming is projected to intensify downpours.

Stronger storms are a key consequence of human-caused global warming. As the atmosphere gets hotter, it can hold more moisture, which can eventually make its way down to the earth as rain or snow.

But that doesn’t mean rainfall patterns are changing in precisely the same way across every part of the globe.

In their latest assessment of climate research , scientists convened by the United Nations found there wasn’t enough data to have firm conclusions about rainfall trends in the Arabian Peninsula and how climate change was affecting them. The researchers said, however, that if global warming were to be allowed to continue worsening in the coming decades, extreme downpours in the region would quite likely become more intense and more frequent.

Hot oceans are a big factor.

An international team of scientists has made a first attempt at estimating the extent to which climate change may have contributed to April’s storms. The researchers didn’t manage to pin down the connection precisely, though in their analysis, they did highlight one known driver of heavy rain in the region: above-normal ocean temperatures.

Large parts of the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans have been hotter than usual recently, in part because of El Niño and other natural weather cycles, and in part because of human-induced warming .

When looking only at El Niño years, the scientists estimated that storm events as infrequent as this month’s delivered 10 percent to 40 percent more rain to the region than they would in a world that hadn’t been warmed by human activities. They cautioned, however, that these estimates were highly uncertain.

“Rainfall, in general, is getting more extreme,” said Mansour Almazroui, a climate scientist at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and one of the researchers who contributed to the analysis.

The analysis was conducted by scientists affiliated with World Weather Attribution, a research collaboration that studies extreme weather events shortly after they occur. Their findings about this month’s rains haven’t yet been peer reviewed, but are based on standardized methods .

The role of cloud seeding isn’t clear.

The U.A.E. has for decades worked to increase rainfall and boost water supplies by seeding clouds. Essentially, this involves shooting particles into clouds to encourage the moisture to gather into larger, heavier droplets, ones that are more likely to fall as rain or snow.

Cloud seeding and other rain-enhancement methods have been tried around the world, including in Australia, China, India, Israel, South Africa and the United States. Studies have found that these operations can, at best, affect precipitation modestly — enough to turn a downpour into a bigger downpour, but probably not a drizzle into a deluge.

Still, experts said pinning down how much seeding might have contributed to this month’s storms would require detailed study.

“In general, it is quite a challenge to assess the impact of seeding,” said Luca Delle Monache, a climate scientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif. Dr. Delle Monache has been leading efforts to use artificial intelligence to improve the U.A.E.’s rain-enhancement program.

An official with the U.A.E.’s National Center of Meteorology, Omar Al Yazeedi, told news outlets that the agency didn’t conduct any seeding during the latest storms. His statements didn’t make clear, however, whether that was also true in the hours or days before.

Mr. Al Yazeedi didn’t respond to emailed questions from The New York Times, and Adel Kamal, a spokesman for the center, didn’t have further comment.

Cities in dry places just aren’t designed for floods.

Wherever it happens, flooding isn’t just a matter of how much rain comes down. It’s also about what happens to all that water once it’s on the ground — most critically, in the places people live.

Cities in arid regions often aren’t designed to drain very effectively. In these areas, paved surfaces block rain from seeping into the earth below, forcing it into drainage systems that can easily become overwhelmed.

One recent study of Sharjah , the capital of the third-largest emirate in the U.A.E., found that the city’s rapid growth over the past half-century had made it vulnerable to flooding at far lower levels of rain than before.
