Regardless, the Maple Leaf Lounge was really tranquil and relaxing, sto=cked with a large breakfast selection that had 2 omelettes, sauteed onions and peppers to throw on them, really good bacon, delicious fingerling potatoes, oatmeal with a big variety of garnishes, fresh fruit and cheese, bagels, muffins and other continental items. There was a good coffee machine with terrific espresso (EVEN DECAF ESPRESSO), cans and pitchers of juice, soda amchine and beer taps. By the time I left they had switched the fruit out for salad in advance of lunch and it look like a thorough selection with chicken. The view of the gates and fray below added tot he cocoon I felt I was in. I would pay to do it again and it definitely added to it. For the two flights I was on (to YYZ connecting to YQB) I was served a nice cheese and fruit plate even though they were about an hour. Impressively, on te shorter YYZ to YQB leg I was served warm nuts as well as a hot towel. I only get that when flying long flights on a lie flat seat on the American legacy carriers. Service was warm, welcoming and just made me feel wonderful. I would consider Air Canada for any destination if price were competitive based on the great service.

We did not like it much. There were so many delays. From getting there to check in, to the delay on flights to get home. It felt so disorganized and it gave us a lot of anxiety and stress. We followed the instructions that were given to us but no one seemed to know what they were doing. We missed our first flight due to the poor management of the airline.

What’s The Best Way To Travel From Montreal To Quebec City

Montreal is only about 255 km (160 miles) away from Quebec City, making it one of the easier trips to make from Montreal . But because they’re so close, there are also a lot of options for travelling between both cities.

You can drive, take the bus, the train, or even fly from Montreal to Quebec City. At one point it was even possible to take a boat down the St. Lawrence from Montreal to Quebec City!

But with so many options, how do you know which one is the best for your trip? I’ll go in depth about each mode of transportation between Montreal and Quebec City. At the end of the day, it tends to come down to a question of flexibility vs. budget .

How To Get From Montreal To Quebec City: A Comparison

How To Drive From Montreal To Quebec City

Driving from Montreal to Quebec City is the cheapest and most flexible option . This is especially true if you already have a car .

Total drive time between both cities is about 2 hours and 45 minutes … however … it never ends up under 3 hours. So although it seems like the fastest option at first glance, it isn’t actually the case.

There’s always traffic somewhere between Montreal and Quebec City… So always expect the drive to take longer than the GPS says.

I’ve started the drive midweek, on the weekends, at all hours of the day and there’s always traffic somewhere. I guess I haven’t tried leaving in the middle of the night yet!

But if you drive to Quebec City, you will have full flexibility on when you want to leave. And you’ll have your car when you’re in Quebec City. So depending on what you’re planning on doing in Quebec City, having a car once you’re there may be more or less important to you.

On the negative side of driving to Quebec City, it is the most tiring (and potentially most stressful) model of transportation (for the driver anyway!). They obviously cannot just fall asleep for the next three hours.

Don’t Have A Car? Rent A Car In Montreal

If you don’t have a car, you can always rent a car to drive from Montreal to Quebec City. This will make driving a bit less budget friendly, but you will maintain some of that flexibility.

You will have to add in some extra time to get to the car rental to pick up the car.

Dealing With Parking In Quebec City

If you’re driving to Quebec City from Montreal, you’ll need to find parking in Quebec City.

There are quite a few parking lots in Quebec City where you can park a few hours at a time up to an entire month!

For shorter stays, park just outside the Old Town in Stationnement SPAQ – Honore-Mercier / Dauphine . It’s an underground parking lot in Place D’Youville. You’ll be very centrally located here!

If you’re planning on a longer stay in Quebec City, a more affordable option is to park a bit further from Old Town. We found long term parking at the Dorchester Parking Lot in the St. Roch.

Dorchester Parking is a large outdoor lot (which I prefer over the indoor parking garages, although indoor is always nice in the winter!), but it’s about a 20 minute walk from Old Town. We were easily able to come and go and there were always spots. Plus they offer discounts for longer stays .

Routes To Drive From Montreal To Quebec City

There are two routes that you can take from Montreal to Quebec City, one on either side of the St. Lawrence River. It’s whether you take highway 40 or highway 20 . 

The route you take will ultimately depend on how much traffic there is on either highway. We always prefer taking highway 40 because it’s just a bit more of an interesting drive.

Although, more often than not, it’s faster to take the 20 . We don’t love driving on the 20 – it’s a 2 lane highway that’s quite straight, flat, and boring. You’ll also have to cross the bridge back over the St. Lawerence to reach Quebec City.

But Do You Actually Need A Car In Quebec City?

Depending on what your plans are in Quebec City, you don’t really need a car once you’re there . If you want to stay within Old Town, then everything you want to see is within walking distance of one another.

Even if you want to explore some of the surrounding neighbourhoods (like St. Roch) they’re easily walkable from Old Town. In fact, we lived in St. Roch and walked everywhere! We would only take our car out on the weekends.

If you want to explore the outskirts of Quebec City (like Montmorency Falls) you still don’t need a car. There are shuttles, and even organized tours (like this one on Viator that takes you to Montmorency Falls , or this one that brings you to Île D’Orleans !).

Although it’s always nice to have a car when you’re exploring a new city, sometimes it’s just not worth the hassle.

Driving Alternative: RideShare To Quebec City From Montreal

Ride sharing is when you get a ride with someone who is already going to Quebec City. There are typically a lot of drivers to choose from as it’s a common route.

It’s a more affordable option, and perhaps offers a bit more flexibility than the next few travel options (like the bus or train).

You won’t be able to rely on a specific schedule, and there’s always a safety (and awkwardness) risk.

There are a few ride sharing websites that you can check, a popular site is Poparide . The cost depends on the driver, but it can start at $30 for one way. I like Poparide because it works like Uber, where the drivers have ratings. 

There is also a new Quebec company for ride sharing within Quebec called Eva . Perhaps it’s a bit more reliable, however it is also more expensive.

Taking The Bus From Montreal To Quebec City 

The bus is a stress free way to get to Quebec City from Montreal. It takes the same amount of time as driving (no surprises there), but now you don’t have the stress of driving . You can sleep the entire way there!

The bus from Montreal to Quebec City is through Orlean Express . There are 12 scheduled departures from Montreal to Quebec City every day of the week. They leave as early as 7:00 A.M. and as late as 9:30 PM.

There are 13 departures from Quebec City to Montreal and leave between 6:30 A.M. and 7:30 P.M.

So it’s not too bad for flexibility! You have a lot of departures to choose from.

For cost, it can range between $40 to $65. The price will vary based on time of day, and how far in advance you book. You might be able to score a cheaper ticket – these will be the promo seats .

Don’t forget you do have to add extra travel time to get to the bus station in Montreal and from the bus station in Quebec City…

Getting To & From The Bus Stations?

Thankfully both bus stations are very centrally located in Montreal and Quebec City

In Montreal, it’s at the Gare d’autocars de Montréal on Berri street. This is across the street from Berri-UQAM metro which connects to three metro lines . This makes it very accessible. There are also several bus routes that stop here.

In Quebec City, the bus drops you off at the Bus terminal at the Gare du Palais (the train station). This is only a 15-20 minute walk the centre of Old Town.

Montreal To Quebec City Train Tips

The train is very similar to the bus in several ways. They have the same flexibility in terms of following scheduled departure time. It’s still a very relaxing ride (if not more so on the train!).

The bus and train for the most part take about the same amount of time. Although, the train can vary between 3 hours and 15 minutes and 3 hours and 45 minutes .

The cost can be almost the same as well. In fact, sometimes it might even be cheaper to take the Montreal to Quebec City train . The cheapest seats start at only $42… but it can go all the way up to $220. So there’s quite a big range.

They do however only offer a limited number of seats at their cheapest fare. More likely than not, it will cost you closer to $90 to take the train.

The Montreal to Quebec City train line also has fewer departure times. From Montreal, the train leaves 5 times between 6:30 A.M. and 6:30 P.M.

On the weekend, there’s one less departure, so the earliest you can leave is at 9:00 A.M.

The biggest benefit of the train is that you don’t have to worry about longer travel times by getting stuck in traffic. Plus, it will most likely be more comfortable than taking the bus.

The train from Montreal to Quebec City is operated through Via Rail .

Getting To & From The Train Station 

When you take the train from Montreal to Quebec City, you also have to take into account your travel time to get to and from the train stations.

In Montreal, the train station is at Place Bonaventure. This is in the heart of downtown on the orange metro line. But it’s also not too far of a walk from the green line (either Peel or McGill metro stations).

P.S. If you’re flying in to Montreal first though, there is also a train station in Dorval (which is at the airport).

In Quebec City, the trains arrive at the Gare du Palais – which is the same place as where the bus arrives.

From the train station in Quebec City, it’s about a 15 minute walk to the heart of Old Town Quebec.

Flying From Montreal To Quebec City

If you’re really in a time crunch, you might want to consider flying – and yes, there are flights from Montreal to Quebec City.

It’s a bit shocking considering it’s less than three hours to drive. A nonstop flight is under one hour … but of course you have to add a bit more to that itinerary.

First, you have to arrive early to the airport. Because it’s a flight within Canada, it’ recommended to arrive 2 hours before departure. In the past, you only needed to arrive an hour before departure but not anymore. Which brings us right back to the 3 hour travel time . Check updated recommended arrival times.

And that doesn’t even include travel time to and from the airport… which is even longer because neither airport is in the city centre .

Plus, with flying, there are a few more things to consider – like now you have limits on what you can bring . This is probably the most stressful way to get from Montreal to Quebec City.

And let’s not forget about the cost of this flight which will put you out anywhere between $150 to $200 for one way. Or the possibility of cancellations and overbooked flights! Plus, this is the least flexible option with only 4 departure times during the day (through Air Canada).

There were up to 10 departures (all nonstop flights) but they were with smaller airlines (some of which I’ve never heard of!).

How To Get To & From The Airport

Airport transfers in montreal.

The airport in Montreal is in Dorval… in the West Island . That’s about a 30 minute drive from downtown.

You can take a taxi or Uber to the airport. Or there’s a bus (the 747 express) which takes about 45 to 70 minutes from Berri-UQAM metro. It runs 24/7 though.

You can also opt to go to Lionel-Groulx metro station which shortens the ride time to 25 to 35 minutes, but it only runs during peak hours.

Airport Transfers In Quebec City

In Quebec City, you’ll be in a similar boat once you arrive at the airport. It’s about a 30 minute drive to Old Town Quebec.

There are two bus routes that stop at the airport and go to downtown Quebec City – the 76 and 80.

Alternatively, they’ve set up a ride sharing program called Eva that will take you downtown with a trusted service. See an estimate for cost .

Alternative: Book An Organized Tour From Montreal

A very simple alternative to taking going by yourself to Quebec City from Montreal is to book an organized tour.

There are several organized tours from Viator that go from Montreal to Quebec City for the day.

By booking an organized tour, you don’t have to deal with the hassle of travel. Everything is figured out for you, from transportation to the schedule for the day.

Despite its sometimes divisive language politics, extreme seasons, and chronic traffic headaches, Montrealers, or les Montréalais , are justifiably proud of their distinctive, if idiosyncratic, city — and for good reason. Travel + Leisure readers named Montreal one of their favorite cities in Canada in 2023 .

The sophisticated, French-speaking (yet very bilingual), culturally diverse city lays claim to world-class restaurants, lovely parks, superb art galleries and museums, a dynamic music scene, inspiring 18th- and 19th-century architecture, and vibrant nightlife.

It can also be a lot of fun in the winter , when locals like to get out and celebrate the cold and snow, even extending the revelry at outdoor festivals and concerts at night.

Thom Seivewright, a Montreal expert and former hotel concierge, launched his small-group tour company, Living Like a Local , in the Canadian city in 2016. “Our art scene is on par with cities two or three times our size,” he says. “There’s obviously a big emphasis placed on arts and culture in Montreal.”

There’s a big emphasis on food , too. Montrealers love their bagels, cheeses, poutine, and maple syrup, and they’re loyal to their chef-owned restaurants. “It’s a little gem of a city that has world-class dining — and world-class junk food,” says Seivewright. 

Long known for its exuberant after-dark scene, Montreal has it all, from cocktail bars to Irish pubs, jazz bars to pulsating dance clubs. The city is even planning to create a 24-hour nightlife district .

Another T+L reader favorite, Hôtel Place d’Armes is housed in four 19th-century neoclassical buildings opposite the Notre-Dame Basilica. The property is highly rated for its tasteful rooms featuring hardwood floors and brick walls, swanky French brasserie , and popular rooftop terrace. 

Hôtel Uville

One of the city’s newer hotels, opened in 2020, Hôtel Uville got its name thanks to its location in Old Montreal’s Place d’Youville. Uville is part design hotel, part museum — a love letter to the Montreal of the 1960s and '70s. This was transformative period, a time when francophone Quebecers were turning away from the Catholic church and leading the charge in North America vis-à-vis cuisine, style, and design — the culmination of which were Expo 67 and the 1976 Olympics.

“This hotel is very cool,” says Seivewright. “They did a great job. The details, like the tiled bathrooms and custom-made wallpapers, are amazing. They’ve got archival photos and artifacts from the '60s and '70s in each of the rooms, and documentary films from the National Film Board that you can watch on your room’s TV.”

The Ritz-Carlton, Montreal

Montreal’s grande-dame hotel, the Ritz-Carlton , opened in 1912 in the city's Golden Square Mile. In addition to housing chef Daniel Boulud's Maison Boulud , the refined property offers afternoon tea in the ornate Palm Court and seasonal garden terrace, Spa St. James, and an indoor saltwater pool.

Four Seasons Hotel Montreal

Located in Golden Square Mile since 2019, the posh  Four Seasons Hotel Montreal is connected via a third-floor walkway to the luxury department store Holt Renfrew Ogilvy . The hotel boasts Marcus Restaurant + Terrace, in partnership with legendary Manhattan chef Marcus Samuelsson; a Guerlain Spa; and a skylit swimming pool with an upstream current generator.

Parc du Mont-Royal

What Central Park is to New Yorkers and Hyde Park to Londoners, Parc du Mont-Royal, or Mount Royal Park, is to Montrealers. At 764 feet high, Mount Royal may not be much of a mountain, but the park is, as Seivewritght says, “the heart and soul of the city.” He adds, “The fact that Montreal is a four-season city and Mount Royal is a four-season park makes it even better because you’ve got skiing, skating, and tobogganing in the wintertime. And in the summer, you can go biking and walking.” You can also go for a picnic and rent a rowboat or Mölkky or spikeball equipment at Beaver Lake. 

Old Montreal

With its graystone buildings and narrow streets, Old Montreal can sometimes feel like a slice of Europe in North America. Certainly no visit to Montreal is complete without a stop here. Not only will you find the city’s most important historic landmarks, including the Notre-Dame Basilica , the 18th-century Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel , the Second Empire-style City Hall, and the neoclassic Marché Bonsecours , but it’s also home to pretty boutique hotels, haute-couture shops, and chef-owned restaurants.

Pointe-à-Callière

A national archaeological site, Pointe-à-Callière , now an impressive archaeology and history museum, sits above the ruins of the birthplace of Montreal. “The Pointe-à-Callière museum is amazing,” says Seivewright. “They’ll take you underground to see the ruins of the original fortifications of Montreal, the original city the French built here in the 1600s.” Visitors can also see Indigenous artifacts uncovered during a dig and part of North America’s first collector sewer, built between 1832 and 1838.

Arsenal Contemporary Art Gallery

Opened in Montreal in an 80,000-square-foot building in 2011, Arsenal Contemporary Art has since expanded to include locations in Toronto and New York City. “Outside of the museums, I would send my clients to certain galleries around town. These days, one of my favorites is Arsenal. It has an amazing [selection] in its permanent collection, but it also puts on temporary exhibits that are just mind-blowing,” says Seivewrigh.

Montreal is a city of festivals, with everything from jazz (the city hosts the world’s largest jazz festival) to Pride to circus arts celebrated here. There’s even a dedicated festival and outdoor performance space downtown called the Quartier des Spectacles . While there are festivals year-round , May to September is the city’s busiest period.

La Banquise

One of Quebec's most beloved foods is poutine, traditionally a mess (translation of "poutine") of french fries, cheese curds, and gravy. But poutine continues to get more upscale. A veritable institution since 1968, La Banquise doesn’t claim to be high-end, but the casual eatery serves 35 kinds of poutine and it’s open 24 hours. “La Banquise is a classic. I’m [vegetarian], and in my opinion, the veggie gravies are even more delicious,” says Seivewright. “A lot of people knock La Banquise because it’s popular, but I stand by it.”

Montreal Plaza

The design at Montreal Plaza is elegant and stylish, yet also notable for its eccentric touches like a dollhouse hanging upside down from the ceiling and Elmo sitting on the bar. Even certain dishes, like crudo or oysters, are served atop a toy triceratops or among plastic Smurfs. Chef and owner Charles-Antoine Crête and his team enjoy serving great food in a playful, joyous way. “This is my favorite place,” says Seivewright. “It’s not the just the way the food is prepared or what it is, but the whimsical, creative way it’s presented.”

Sushi Momo , from Mexican-Canadian chef Christian Ventura, is Montreal’s best vegan sushi restaurant. The sleek, dimly lit, botanically adorned space in the Plateau area is inviting, while the artfully plated confections are a feast for the eyes and the fusion of flavors a song for the taste buds.

Nora Gray , a lively, casual restaurant in Griffintown, is known for its southern Italian cuisine, updated cucina povera , and privately imported natural and organic wines. The dark wood, banquettes, long bar, and warm candlelight lend the restaurant an intimate, romantic, and club-like feel.

Voted Canada’s best restaurant in 2023 , Mon Lapin is a cozy wine bar and restaurant in Little Italy. It serves natural wines and an ever-changing menu of French- and Italian-inspired small plates. Each dish highlights fresh, seasonal, and local ingredients plus unexpected flavor combinations.

Cloakroom Bar

The 25-seat Cloakroom Bar , with a cloak-and-dagger atmosphere, was named Canada’s second-best bar in 2023 . “It’s one of my favorite bars anywhere in the world,” says Seivewright. “It’s hidden behind a menswear shop, which makes it even cooler. It’s very exclusive feeling. You tell them, 'I like gin, I like citrus,' and they’ll create something for you. If you’re three people and you all like the same thing, they’ll create three different drinks.”

Situated in the Plateau Mont-Royal, Diese Onze is an intimate jazz bar that also serves tapas and mains. “I’m a big jazz fan, and I love Diese Onze,” says Seivewright. “It’s a good mix of local and out-of-town musicians.”

Upstairs Jazz Bar & Grill

A Montreal institution since 1995, Upstairs is, funnily enough, located in a basement. It attracts big-name international jazz acts who make this a routine stop on their tour itineraries.

Pub Le Sainte-Élisabeth 

Established in 1997, this European-style pub between the Quartier des Spectacles and student-heavy Quartier Latin is quite cozy inside, but it’s the enclosed, leafy terrace at the back that draws people here come summer. The service many not win any awards, but Le Sainte-Élisabeth is about the ambience. 

The minimalist redesign of the Canadian Fur Company building (hence Furco ), located on a downtown back street, is a big draw for wine lovers and the happy hour crowd. It features an adventurous food and wine menu, in addition to more traditional charcuterie and cheese plates.

Maison Marie Saint Pierre

Marie Saint Pierre 's Montreal-made, ready-to-wear pieces marry timeless feminine styles with contemporary flair and function.

Entering this handsome Crescent Street atelier-cum-boutique near the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is like stepping into an old-school European tailor shop. Started by their father, Arthur Der Shahinian, sons Tavit and John carry on the tradition of crafting impeccably fitted and designed bespoke men’s suits and shirts, with damask silk lining and hand-sewn button holes, never compromising on quality or friendly, professional service.

Simons is originally from Quebec City, but it’s popular in cities across Canada. The small, mid-range department store downtown carries popular fashion brands as well as its own collections, in addition to homewares. “I’m a big fan of Simons,” says Seivewright. “I buy half my clothes there. The price point is good, the quality is good, and I like that it’s a local brand.”

Holt Renfrew Ogilvy

Montreal’s answer to Saks Fifth Avenue, Holt Renfrew Ogilvy is a one-stop shop for all things luxury, including clothing, shoes, and accessories. Clients can also enjoy a personal shopping experience in one of the five fifth-floor suites or the glamorous art-deco Café Holt, with its remarkable solar-like orb set above the central bar.

Saint Laurent Boulevard

“Saint Laurent [Boulevard], between Saint Joseph Boulevard and up to Van Horne Avenue, has the best boutique design shopping nowadays,” says Seivewright. “You could go all the way up to Little Italy and it’s still amazing. I was walking there the other day and every single window I walked by made me want to go in. There are furniture shops, clothing shops, and jewelry shops — some of it is new, some of it is vintage, and it’s all local.”

Saint-Henri

Saint-Henri, once a francophone working-class neighborhood, is now gentrified, replete with popular, chef-owned wine bars and restaurants, antiques shops, cafes, and boutiques. Still, it retains pockets of its former self. “I love it because it has parts that haven’t changed in a hundred years and others that make it the most modern neighborhood in Montreal,” says Seivewright. “It’s got a cool, little rough-around-the-edges vibe. It’s one of those neighborhoods where you’ll have a multimillion-dollar home next to a really rundown place, and you see that contrast. Then, you listen to the people and hear French and English. You've got old people, young people — it’s a neighborhood where everything mixes.”

Plateau Mont-Royal/Mile End

Once relegated to working-class European immigrants, the Plateau/Mile End area is the epicenter of Montreal’s creativity and bohemian joie de vivre. Leafy streets lined with triplexes fronted by balconies and steep, often-winding, wrought-iron staircases invite visitors to explore this neighborhood bursting with convivial cafes, top-drawer restaurants , funky vintage shops, and trendy boutiques.

For a glimpse into how the upper crust of Montreal lived until the 1970s and '80s, head to the neighborhood of Outremont. Its two main shopping and dining strips are Bernard Ouest and Laurier Ouest avenues — part of the former turns into a pedestrian-only area come summer, with restaurant terraces sitting directly on the street.

Montreal is a four-season city. Late April to mid-May tends to be best for blooming trees, while October to early November is usually prime for leaf peeping. The holiday season is lovely, but a white Christmas is increasingly rare. For a stronger chance of experiencing the romance of winter snow, January and February are ideal. Summers in Montreal are hot and humid, and heat waves can now begin as early as May. Visit in May, June, or late August through September and October to avoid the worst of the summer temperatures and crowds.

Montreal can be reached via regular flights with Air Canada, Delta, American, and United. Flying from New York’s LaGuardia to Montreal-Trudeau International Airport, better known as Dorval (YUL), takes about 90 minutes gate to gate. Driving may be cheaper, but it takes about seven hours, and unless you’re planning to pay for hotel parking, parking in Montreal can be a hassle. For travelers living in New York or Vermont, a more scenic and leisurely option (10 hours) is Amtrak’s Adirondack train from Moynihan Train Hall to Montreal’s Gare Centrale (Central Station).

In summer, the best way to get around is on foot or by Bixi, the city-wide bicycle rental system. In 2023, Bixi decided to end the storage of their bicycles during the winter, so they are now available year-round. However, there are not as many stations as in summer. The metro (subway) is fairly reliable and frequent during rush hour — and often the quickest way to get from point A to point B. Buses tend to be less reliable, but they go everywhere the metro does not. An Opus card can be purchased with several fares added, if you’re planning on using the metro and/or buses often. These are the top travel tips to know before arriving at the border:

Have your travel documents handy.  Whether travelling by land, air or water, you can help speed up processing times by coming prepared with your travel documents.

Driving home? Plan ahead and check  border wait times . You can avoid waiting in line by planning your drive to cross the border during non-peak hours such as early morning.

Flying home? Save time with Advance Declaration .  Download the application on your smart phone to make your customs declaration up to 72 hours in advance of your arrival into Canada at the Toronto, Vancouver, Montréal, Winnipeg, Halifax, Québec City, Ottawa, Billy Bishop, Calgary and Edmonton international airports. Data shows that using this tool can reduce time at a kiosk or eGate by up to 50%.

Be prepared to declare your goods upon entry into Canada.  Gather your receipts for goods purchased or received while away before you travel and keep them readily available. Visit I Declare: A guide for residents returning to Canada and use the  CBSA duty and taxes estimator  to help calculate your monies owed. You should be aware of everything that is inside your vehicle as you are responsible for its contents.

Know your exemptions from duties and taxes .  If you have been outside of Canada seven days or more, you can import goods worth up to CAN$800, duty-and tax-free. Within this personal exemption, you are allowed to bring back duty and tax free: 

• Two bottles of wine (1.5 litres total), or one large standard bottle of liquor (1.14 litres),  or  approximately 24 cans or bottles (355 ml each) of beer (8.5 litres total); and,
• 200 cigarettes, and 50 cigars, and 200 grams manufactured tobacco,  and  200 tobacco sticks. The packages must be stamped “duty paid,” as you would find them at a duty-free store. 

Travelling with medication?  If you have a prescription for a narcotic or controlled drug, you must declare it and ensure its in properly labelled container. Learn more about your responsibilities .

Travelling with firearms? If you are travelling with a firearm be sure to check the  rules on importing firearms  and other  restricted and prohibited goods before your departure. Better yet, consider leaving the firearm at home.

Importing a vehicle ?   If you are a resident of Canada you can  temporarily import a vehicle  that is licensed and registered in the United States, however, the duty and tax implications, the length of time the vehicle can remain in Canada, and how the vehicle can be used in Canada may differ. If you are permanently importing a vehicle from the U.S. or Mexico, visit Canada’s  Registrar of Imported Vehicles  website prior to arriving at the border for details about vehicle eligibility and the overall process, including the necessary duties and taxes.

Bringing poultry across the border?  Any poultry products you wish to bring into Canada must be for human consumption, retail packaged and labelled as a "Product of the USA." Homemade food or leftovers containing poultry cannot be brought into Canada. Travelling with a pet or importing an animal into Canada? You will need the right paperwork at the border to meet Canada's import requirements.

Three arrested after Quebec City assault, forcible confinement

Two men and a woman were in police custody Monday evening after being arrested hours earlier in connection with an assault and forcible confinement near a Quebec City shopping centre.

Police said they received a 911 call at 4:38 p.m. concerning a disturbance near the shopping centre in the city’s Beauport district. The victim of an assault had taken refuge in a store and provided police with the description of a vehicle.

The car was quickly tracked down hear the shopping centre and the three people inside the vehicle placed under arrest.

The suspects, who were expected to be questioned late Monday by investigators, face charges of assault causing injury, uttering threats and forcible confinement.

Montreal is attracting ever more French expats seeking a less rigid and more collaborative 'company spirit'

Montreal's 200,000-strong French community is the largest outside Europe. Many of these expats are executives or entrepreneurs.

LETTER FROM MONTREAL

Early in the morning, in the working-class neighborhood of Hochelaga-Maisonneuve in Montreal, the kitchen comes alive. The "chop chop" of knives chopping up vegetables punctuates the conversations of the 20 or so people busy at the stove. Some are mothers who have got together to cook "as a family" to reduce the cost of the meals they will be taking home, others are trainees. Former homeless people, unemployed single mothers, autistic teenagers and destitute new immigrants – all far removed from the job market – are taking part in a six-month training program at the Collective Kitchen, which will help them find jobs as cooks or waiters.

At the helm of this social economy enterprise for the past 10 years is a Frenchman, Benoist de Peyrelongue, 54. Settled in Montreal since 2009, he arrived with a professional cook's diploma and experience in the restaurant and hotel business. Here, he has reinvented his professional life. "In France, even if I already had a social inclination to do something else, they would have asked me to go back to school and get at least an MBA," joked the man who now heads a team of some 40 employees and manages an annual budget of 4.5 million Canadian dollars (€3 million). "In Quebec, they trust you, whatever your previous career path. You're only limited by yourself," he said.

Exceptional appeal

On January 10, the French Consulate in Montreal announced that "the 200,000 mark had just been passed": a record that underlines the exceptional appeal of the Quebec metropolis. This French community, the largest outside Europe, contributes to the city's economic dynamism. French companies such as Alstom, Air Liquide, BNP and Accuracy attract expatriates eager to live the "Quebec experience."

The bakeries and patisseries run by the "French of France," as they're known here, have long permeated Montreal's neighborhoods with the smell of "real" bread and pastries. But French workers are now present in all sectors of activity, and most of them are discovering an "entrepreneurial spirit" that is markedly different from that of France.

Adrien Peyrache, 42, followed the typical career path of a young neuroscience researcher. He attended engineering school in France, completed a postdoctorate in New York, and in 2016, he applied to the prestigious English-speaking McGill University in Montreal. No sooner had he been hired than he was awarded $1 million (€700,000) to conduct his research on neural circuits in his 15-person-strong laboratory. Now, it's up to him to learn how to raise the funds needed to develop his projects.

French PM to visit Quebec City, Montreal as part of 3-day visit to Canada

French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal is slated to be in Quebec City and Montreal as he wraps up a three-day visit to Canada on Friday.

Attal and Quebec Premier François Legault are expected to hold a working session followed by a joint news conference in Quebec City in the morning.

Attal will then travel to Montreal, where he is set to participate in an economic roundtable with Legault at the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, the province's pension fund manager.

He is then expected to take part in a panel organized by the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal, also with the Quebec premier.

The French prime minister has a full day, also visiting an elementary school and the Quebec International Book Fair in Quebec City.

On Thursday, Attal told a news conference he supports a policy of neutrality towards Quebec independence as he stood next to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Ottawa.

He later delivered a speech before members of the provincial legislature — the first foreign leader to do so at Quebec's National Assembly since former French president François Hollande in 2014.
