Also like Clean People Ultra Concentrated Laundry Detergent Strips. They come in both scented and unscented. For stains, I bring along a small slice of Basin’s Fabric Stain Remover Soap.

Lucy

Thank you for this helpful post. Before reading it, I didn’t even know that laundry strips were a thing. But I got some Lazy Coconut strips for a recent trip to France. They were awesome, and helped me with sink laundry so I could pack light and travel with just a backpack and carryon.

Laura Wilson

This is incredibly helpful! With so many to choose from and never using them before I’ve had a hard time deciding. Thank you so much!

Kristi

I used the Ethique laundry bar to wash clothing in the hotel room sink on our 3-week Scandinavia trip in August. It worked great!

Victoria Barkoff

I use “eco-friendly” Kind brand unscented laundry sheets. You can easily tear off a piece for smaller washes. For stains, I slice off a piece of The Soap Works Stain-Remover Laundry Bar (from a Canadian company) and pack it in a small plastic bag.

Pat Galfano

I love my powder (citrus for easy rinse out) Forever New . Carry in a small zip lock bag and use for sink wash out. roll in towel, squeeze and hang to dry.

I travel with the Scrubba washing bag and, typically, use the hotel shower gel or shampoo. The Earth laundry papers are good too.

Allison Benham

My travel buddy brought the Earth Breeze laundry sheets on our trip to Italy and I loved them so much I use them at home now too!

Natalie E.Tackett

Thanks for sharing other readers’ comments and reviews of these products. Very helpful! I use The Laundress wash and stain bar when traveling. It comes as a palm sized bar of soap, but I cut it in 1/4 pieces so it’s more compact and takes up less room.

Darlene Sanchez

Wow I didn’t know there are so many laundry soap options❣️ I am going to France for a month traveling with a carryon luggage and personal item only backpack. I have been following Travel Fashion Girl website since 2016. I love all the helpful information and the links to items shared for purchase❣️

Colleen Sachs

I subscribed to the Earth Breeze laundry sheets over a year ago – no more big plastic jugs!! Stuffed several into a ziploc for 3 weeks in Ireland and tore some in half or used a whole sheet, depending on how much I sink washed at various stops. Next trip: 2 weeks in Spain in Feb – already committed my brain to using the 10 piece Essential wardrobe!!

Nancy

This was a great article that introduced me to a lot of options for sink washing that I was not aware of. I’ve used Woolite packets and Travelon sheets for years, but I’m going to give SOAK a try. The rinsing is always the worst part of hand washing, so I’m intrigued by the idea of no rinse needed. I’m going to try it at home first just to see how it works. Thanks for all the information you’ve shared through the years. It’s been so helpful when packing for a trip!

Susan T

Great options. I wish more were unscented.

Janet

Oh my gosh, too many choices. I had no idea there were this many to choose from

Best Travel Laundry Detergent For Your Next Trip

Travel Gear Reviews_Best Travel Laundry Detergents

Not all detergents work well for handwashing; in that case, you need to find one that doesn’t leave a residue, smells delicious, and is easy to travel with.

Handily, we’ve reviewed some of the best for you. By knowing what to buy beforehand, you won’t have the hassle of looking around in your location and trying to find where to purchase travel laundry detergent!

Skip Ahead To My Advice Here!

Best Travel Laundry Detergent Reviews

Travel Laundry Detergent Packets . Find several brands of small packets and try which one suits you here.

1. Breezeo Laundry Detergent Strips

travel size laundry detergent

If you want to save space in your suitcase, detergent strips and an excellent sink laundry detergent option are a great way to go. Breezeo strips are high quality and great for anyone on a budget. This pack has enough for 48 loads of washing, which is undoubtedly more than enough for a regular trip, with just one strip required for one lot of laundry.

The steps contain a concentrated detergent that dissolves when added to either hot or cold water. The detergent also dissolves completely, so you don’t have to worry about granite bits of undissolved detergent sticking to your clothing – there’s nothing worse! You can either use them in a bowl, e.g., handwashing, or you can use them in a machine.

2. FINZY Laundry Detergent Sheets

travel size laundry detergent

This detergent product comes in a pack of either one sheet, five, or ten; however, the price is not as budget-worthy as the first product we discussed. Despite that, this is a high-quality option and one of the best travel wash detergent choices that will certainly clean your clothes thoroughly and leave them smelling fresh.

These sheets are dissolvable in either hot or cold water, and you literally just put them into the bowl or the machine with your washing, and they will clean your clothes without any residue left over. They will also leave a rather pleasant scent, which some detergents don’t do! The sheets come in a pack that needs to be cut open, so you can be sure that they’re ultra-fresh at the time of use. This is, therefore, one of the best travel detergents for handwashing products.

3. WashEZE Laundry Sheets

travel size laundry detergent

This particular travel laundry detergent comes in a box of either 30 or 40 sheets, which will certainly last you for a long time during your travels . These sheets are also a 3-in-1 product, so they clean your clothes and soften and act as a stain remover.

One sheet is enough for one lot of laundry, whether washing in a machine or a bowl, and they dissolve entirely with hot or cold water, although they do work better with hot water overall. You can also use these sheets in a dryer to ensure that your clothes remain soft and not like cardboard!

4. Tide Sport Travel Sink Packets

travel size laundry detergent

This travel washing powder detergent is a packet that you add to your washing, either hot or cold, and the liquid will wash your clothes and ensure that it remains fresh and soft. The detergent includes Febreze to help keep odors away, allowing your clothes to be wearable.

This detergent is also ideal for removing stains, giving you a long-lasting wardrobe while traveling. The only downside is that this particular option isn’t as compact as sheets or strips, but that may not be a problem if you want the added freshness and stain removal option.

5. LG Laundry Detergent Sheets – Lucky Fiji Power Sheet

Brands we use and trust.

LG Laundry Detergent Sheets -Lucky Fiji Power Sheet

This LG product contains a box of 45 travel laundry detergent sheets, so you will have enough detergent to see you through at least a few weeks of travel . You also get the added extra of the big named brand, as LG makes high-quality washing machines and other electrical equipment.

You pop a sheet into your machine or your bowl of hot water and allow the detergent to do its magic. These sheets are the equivalent of 100 ounces of detergent in a regular liquid form, so you can be sure that your clothes will be clean. The sheets are also infused with lemon and lavender, keeping your clothes smelling delicious. You also don’t have to worry about stains, as the detergent contains a plant-based stain remover.

6. Sea to Summit Trek And Travel Liquid Soap

travel size laundry detergent

This isn’t a detergent per se, but a travel laundry soap, which could easily be used to quickly wash your clothes while on the go. The product is small enough to be taken as cabin luggage and is also biodegradable and free of added nasties. The bottle is strong, and the lid isn’t going to leak while in your bag.

This particular soap has a green tea fragrance that is light and isn’t overpowering. Of course, you can also use this like a bar of regular soap, so you get two products in one.

7. BerryPLUS Soap Berry Eco-Friendly Natural Laundry Detergent

travel size laundry detergent

This is an excellent option for anyone who is eco-aware, as we all should be, as a biodegradable travel clothes wash. Not only does it clean your clothes well, but it’s also eco-friendly and doesn’t contain any added chemicals or other extras.

This natural travel laundry detergent is a packet you do your laundry, made from soapberries. That means your clothes are super-clean and smell delicious at the same time. This detergent is OK to be used with regular washing machines; however, it could also be used in a bowl with hot water for soaking and hand washing.

8. Scrubba Wash Bag

travel size laundry detergent

This isn’t a detergent but an entire laundry system, giving your clothes a cleaning experience that will eradicate dirt and stains. Because of the product’s space-saving and effectiveness, it is one of the best travel laundry kit products you can buy .

This is a portable washing machine in a bag, so you add your clothes and the detergent and squash it all together. It’s like the old-fashioned mangle or scrub board, getting rid of dirt easily.

After washing, the bag doubles as a drying bag, making it the ideal option for travel and camping breaks. It weighs just 5oz, so it’s not going to take up space or weight in your case, and you don’t have to think about finding a bowl or a plug for the sink to wash your clothes.

Laundry Travel Tips

Now you know which detergents are best to use, what else do you need to know about washing your clothes on the go? Washing your clothes certainly saves on space because you don’t have to worry about taking a million and one outfits , but it can be a drag on your time if you don’t know how to do it correctly.

Here are a few tips you can bear in mind:

  • Try and use free laundry services wherever possible; sometimes, these come at an added cost, so this is something to bear in mind in your planning.
  • Search for local laundrettes or laundromats. Again, you’ll pay for these, but they’ll typically be cheaper than hotel laundry services. Make sure you have some change for using these types of laundrette services.
  • Try and pack as many synthetic fabrics as possible, as these ordinarily dry faster than natural fabrics, saving you time on drying.
  • It’s best to do your washing in the bathtub if your hotel has one, but the sink is just as valuable.
  • Pack a travel sink stopper (plug), as many hotels don’t have these!
  • Also, pack a travel washing line you can tie up in the bathroom or on the balcony and a few pegs in a small bag.
  • A dedicated laundry bag is a good idea, as this will keep your dirty clothes, which need washing, away from your clean clothes while traveling around before you can get to do your laundry.
  • When washing, only use a small amount of detergent, as hand washing can mean small pieces of residue stick to your clothes if you use too much.
  • Make sure you give your clothes a proper wash by ensuring they’re thoroughly wet first, adding the detergent, allowing it to sud up well, and then kneading it with your hands to ensure everything is clean.
  • When rinsing, don’t stop until all soap suds have gone; otherwise, you’ll end up with that residue, and they’ll take forever to dry.
  • Wring out all excess water as much as possible before you hang your clothes to dry
  • Make use of radiators for drying if your hotel room has one.

Buying Guide

When you’re at home, doing a load of laundry and getting a basket full of clean, fresh-smelling clothes is a wonderful feeling. It’s lovely to sleep in freshly washed sheets or slip into a snuggly sweater that has just come out of the dryer. When you’re traveling or away from home, using laundry detergent travel packs helps you get the same clean and fresh feeling as when you’re at home. Whether you’re going away for a week or two or for a months-long trip, taking a couple of laundry detergent travel packs with you can revive both your clothes and your spirits.

Laundry detergent travel packs come in different varieties. Some brands offer individual pouches filled with just the right amount of laundry detergent for one load of laundry. This way, you don’t need to worry about buying a gigantic bottle of laundry detergent when you’re on the road. Having a small, convenient and easy-to-carry pouch is all you need. Some travel laundry detergent travel packs come in strips or sheets instead of pouches, where the detergent has been concentrated into a dry strip or sheet that dissolves when you toss it into a sink full of water or a washing machine. Because they aren’t liquid, the sheets are lightweight, highly portable and easy to bring with you wherever you go.

When it comes to buying laundry detergent travel packs, it’s best to start with a brand you know and have used before. You don’t want to have to interrupt your vacation with a skin rash or allergic reaction to a new laundry detergent that doesn’t agree with you. Be sure to try out the laundry detergent travel pack at home first to make sure that you do not come across any allergic reactions or skin discomfort. This is especially important if you have sensitive skin.

What to Look For

  • Laundry detergent travel packs come in different quantities. If you’re just going for a short trip, you may only need a travel pack that has three or five individual pouches in it. However, if you’re going for a longer trip or travel frequently, you may want to get one that has 30 or 50 packs in it. This way, you’ll have enough for multiple trips on hand.
  • Be sure to check the instructions on the laundry detergent travel pack before using them. The process may be the same for some brands as the regular laundry detergent but may differ slightly for others.
  • If you have sensitive skin, avoid any laundry detergent travel packs that have a fragrance. This can irritate not only your skin, but also your eyes and your nose. Go with an unscented laundry detergent if you want to avoid any allergic reactions.
  • Be sure to check the cleaning power of the laundry detergent travel pack. While you’re on the road, you may end up getting dirtier than usual, especially if you’re enjoying the great outdoors. Ensure the laundry detergent can handle anything you throw at it so your clothes turn out clean and fresh every time.
  • Many people think laundry detergent is actually just a different kind of soap. However, this is not true. While liquid laundry detergent looks and feels like liquid soap, it’s actually a type of chemical compound that suspends dirt molecules from the clothing so they can be washed away by the water. This is different from how soap works.

When you think of laundry detergent, do you think of the devil? During medieval times, any kind of soap or similar product was actually associated with evil for many people. People did not want to wash their clothes or their bodies during this time period because they thought that soap was the work of the devil. Some historians believe that this thinking is what lead to the spread of the black plague, because people were filthy and did not want to clean themselves.

Laundry Detergents for Travel-Buyer’s Guide

When selecting a laundry detergent for travel, you must consider several important things.

These factors can ensure that you choose a detergent that meets your specific needs while traveling.

Here are some things to consider when buying a laundry detergent for travel:

Portability and Packaging

Liquid laundry detergent for travel

One of the most crucial factors to consider when selecting a laundry detergent for travel is its portability and packaging.

Look for a detergent that comes in compact and lightweight packaging, ideally in a small bottle or individual packets.

This will make it easier to pack and carry in your luggage without taking up too much space or adding unnecessary weight.

Concentration and Efficiency

Travel often involves limited access to laundry facilities, so choosing a highly concentrated and efficient detergent is essential.

Concentrated detergents require a smaller amount per load, allowing you to carry a smaller quantity while achieving effective cleaning results.

Additionally, efficient detergents are formulated to work well in various water conditions, including hard water, which is common in many travel destinations.

Let’s find out

Versatility and Suitability

Consider the versatility and suitability of the laundry detergent for different types of fabrics and garments.

A good travel detergent should be suitable for handwashing and machine washing, providing flexibility depending on the available facilities.

Furthermore, it should be gentle enough to use on various clothing materials, including delicates and synthetic fabrics, to prevent damage or fading.

Environmental Considerations

As responsible travelers, it’s essential to consider the environmental impact of the laundry detergent you choose.

Look for biodegradable and phosphate-free detergents, as these are less harmful to the environment.

Plus, some brands offer eco-friendly options that use natural ingredients and sustainable packaging, which can be preferable for environmentally conscious travelers.

Top Product Overview

Top products, breezeo laundry detergent sheets.

Breezeo Laundry Detergent Strips (48 strips) - Fresh Linen Scent - More Convenient than Pods, Pacs, Liquids or Powders – Great for Home, Dorm, Travel, Camping & Hand-Washing

The Breezeo Laundry Detergent Sheets  are an amazing solution for travel laundry soap. They’re literally strips of detergent, so they’re incredibly compact and portable. One strip equals one load of laundry, and one tiny box holds 48 strips!

It’s worth noting that you can use multiple strips at once, and it’s actually recommended to use two strips for medium-large loads, or just clothes that are very dirty.

The detergent strips work best when used in a washing machine, so they’re certainly not the perfect option for hand washing dirty clothes. However, they will dissolve completely in hot or cold water, so you could try to use them in the sink and see how well they perform when used for handwashing.

Also, it’s worth noting that the detergent strips are just the best value for money you will find. It’s a little less than $10 for a box of 48 strips, which comes down to just some 20 cents per load.

  • Great value for money
  • Lightweight and portable
  • Plant-based composition
  • Clumping issues

Product Information

  • Weight: 3.52 oz
  • Laundry Loads: 48

Sea to Summit Wilderness Wash

Sea To Summit Citronella Wilderness Wash (3 Ounce/ 89ml)

If you’re looking for travel laundry detergent that’s great for camping, the Sea to Summit wash is one of the best options. It’s a thick and concentrated formula that’s both paraben-free and biodegradable. The laundry soap is very gentle on your hands and you can get away without using any gloves when doing laundry.

It also has a fresh citrusy smell, and it helps keep the bugs away from you outdoors. It’s easily one of the best travel laundry detergents, but it’s also one of the priciest.

The 3-ounce bottle has limited availability and it sometimes costs more than the 8-ounce bottle, which makes no sense. It’s better to just buy the bigger bottle and transfer the soap to a smaller container so you’re not paying $1 per load.

  • Great for camping
  • Repels bugs
  • Biodegradable and paraben-free
  • Not the most portable option
  • Weight: 8.5 oz
  • Laundry Loads: /

Finzy Laundry Soap Sheets

Finzy® Laundry Soap Sheets, Washer Sheets for Travel Laundry, 32 loads, Portable Individual Packages, More Efficient and Convenient than Liquid, Pods, or Pacs - Travel & Eco Friendly

The Finzy Laundry Soap sheets are perfect if you’re looking for value for money. A pack of these includes 32 detergent sheets, which is enough to do 32 loads of laundry. And the box costs only some $9, so the total cost per load is just a little under $0.3.

Also, it’s important to note that one sheet is enough to do a classic load of laundry that you would be doing at home. If you’re washing a smaller load or just a couple of items, you can cut the detergent sheets into halves and even quarters.

They’re suitable for both washing machines and hand washing, but it’s worth noting that you won’t need an entire sheet to hand wash some laundry in the sink. A quarter of a sheet should be enough, just make sure to let it dissolve entirely before you add any laundry to the sink.

Additionally, you should know that these detergent sheets are phosphate-free and biodegradable, so they’re completely safe for use outdoors.

  • Suitable for machine and hand washing
  • Can be cut into pieces for smaller loads
  • Very strong scent
  • Weight: 3.2 oz
  • Laundry Loads: 32

The Laundress Wash And Stain Bar

The Laundress Wash and Stain Bar is an interesting solution for travel laundry detergent. It’s a soap bar that functions as a magic eraser – it’s made to easily remove spots and stains from clothes, carpets, and upholstery.

This works even with oil-based stains, so you can easily get out makeup, pit stains, and even cooking grease out of your clothes. It’s also perfect for those moments when you just need to get a stain out, plus it doubles as a classic laundry soap.

Also, it’s entirely biodegradable because it’s made from plant-based ingredients, so it’s perfectly safe for your hands and eco-friendly. The only downside is that it’s a soap bar, so it’s not quite as convenient as liquid soap and you’ll need to find better packaging for it. But other than that, it’s certainly one of the best laundry soaps for travel you can get your hands on.

  • Plant-based ingredients
  • Great for spot treatment
  • Soap bars can be clunky
  • Only for hand washing
  • Weight: 2 oz

washEZE Laundry Sheets

WashEZE 3-in-1 Laundry Detergent Sheets 20 Loads Scented Liquidless Soap Sheet-Detergent, fabric softener and more -TSA Travel Approved, Dorm Life, Camping, Small Dwellings and RV Laundry Detergent

The WashEZE laundry sheets are a good option if you’re looking for something ultra-compact and portable. They’re 3-in-1 laundry sheets that include detergent, softener, and static control, plus they’re phosphate-free.

The laundry sheets are compatible with all kinds of washing machines, plus they’re suitable for handwashing. If you’re using the sheet for handwashing, just let it dissolve in the water entirely, before you add your laundry to it.

What makes these so great for travel is that there won’t be any soap accidents in your suitcase, which could happen with classic laundry soap. It’s worth noting that the box includes 20 detergent sheets for some $15, so it comes down to about $0.75 per load. That’s not too bad, considering that the strips also include fabric softener and that they’re suitable for larger loads.

  • Suitable for washers and handwashing
  • Includes detergent and fabric softener
  • Not the best for heavily soiled clothes
  • Weight: 3 oz
  • Laundry Loads: 20

Tide Sport Travel Sink Packets

Tide Liquid Travel Sink Packets, 3-Count

The Tide travel sink packets are worth considering if you prefer using liquid detergent. These are tiny (0.17 fl oz) packs of liquid laundry detergent that take up practically no space in your luggage. They’re extremely portable and excellent for those of you who are used to hand-washing your clothes when traveling.

They’re called sink packets because the amount of detergent is just enough to wash a sink full of dirty clothes, or just a laundry bag. That means that one packet should be enough to hand wash a small load of laundry, but keep in mind that you’d normally use a lot more liquid laundry detergent when washing clothes in a machine.

The downside is that these are quite pricey. It’s a little more than $1 per packet (and load), which definitely isn’t budget-friendly. On the other hand, it is Tide detergent, so at least you can be certain that it’s going to perform well and actually clean your clothes, instead of just making them smell nice.

  • Quality detergent
  • Great for washing clothes in a sink
  • Small and portable
  • One of the priciest options
  • Weight: 2.08 oz
  • Laundry Loads: 3

Lazy Coconuts Eco Laundry Detergent Strips

LAZY COCONUTS Eco Friendly, Plant Powered Laundry Detergent Strips - Fragrance Free, Unscented, Ultra Concentrated, Earth Friendly No Plastic - Lightweight and Perfect For Home, Dorms, Travel, Camping

The Lazy Coconuts Eco detergent strips are an excellent option if you want a sustainable solution for doing laundry while traveling. These are eco-friendly laundry strips in recycled packaging, and they’re suitable for hand washing and machine washing.

One strip is enough for a daily wash of a small-medium load, but you’ll need two strips for a bigger load or heavily soiled clothes. When using the strips for hand washing, you should add the strip to the water and let it dissolve before adding the clothes. Also, it’s best to let heavily soiled clothes soak for a while, to ensure you can wash them properly.

It’s also worth noting that the strips are free of plastics, paraben, and phosphates, plus they’re vegan and hypoallergenic. They’re safe for your hands and the environment, which makes them suitable for use outdoors as well.

  • Good value for money
  • Not great for very dirty/greasy clothes
  • Weight: 4.7 oz

What To Look For

Machine or hand washing.

Do you plan to wash clothes in the washer or by hand? Depending on what you usually do, you should choose the appropriate travel laundry soap.

Pods and soap sheets are the most portable option for machine washing, while plastic packets of soap are more suitable for handwashing. Laundry strips can also work for hand washing, but it’s best to cut them into smaller strips since they are made for larger loads. That way you don’t waste anything, and you get more use out of a single strip.

It’s also easier to pack laundry detergent when it’s in the form of strips because it takes up much less space in your luggage.

Indoor or Outdoor use?

Are you washing the clothes indoors, or are you doing it outdoors?

If it’s the latter and you’re going to be dumping that water outside, you should look into biodegradable soaps. They’re safe for the environment and don’t have any toxic chemicals, so you can safely dump the water anywhere, without having to look for chemical dump tanks.

They’re also a lot easier on your hands, and you don’t have to wear gloves when doing laundry. This is especially convenient for using laundry bags or doing laundry at campsites.

If you’re washing the laundry at home, you don’t have to look at the chemical composition as much. Plus you have more options at your disposal, especially if you have access to a washer.

Best Travel Laundry Soap: Our Top Picks

Not sure what kind of travel laundry soap you should get? Go with one of our top three picks, depending on how you usually do laundry while traveling.

Sea to Summit wash is one of the best travel laundry detergent options if you prefer liquid soap. It’s biodegradable and paraben-free, so it’s a great option for camping. The citrus-scented wash is also quite versatile, since it’s suitable for clothes, dishes, and even as a hair/body wash! Also, it’s available in several packaging sizes, but the largest one is the best value for money.

  • Super thick concentrated formula with the fresh scent of Citronella
  • Biodegradable and Paraben-free

If you just want a cheap solution, go with the Finzy portable detergent sheets . They’re by far the best value for money out of the bunch since the total cost comes down to less than $0.3 per load. They’re also biodegradable and phosphate-free, plus you can use them for either hand washing or machine washing.

If you mostly wash clothes by hand when traveling or camping, pick up the Laundress Wash & Stain Bar . It’s a stain remover soap bar that works for both getting out stains and just classic laundry washing, and it’s excellent value for money. It’s also allergen-free, made from plant-based ingredients, and biodegradable, so it’s safe for both your hands and the environment.

Laundry detergent is an essential item for maintaining clean and fresh clothes. For those who travel frequently, however, carrying a full-size bottle of detergent can be cumbersome and impractical. As a solution to this issue, travel size laundry detergent provides a convenient way to keep your clothes clean and smelling fresh on your trips without adding too much weight to your luggage.

Table of Contents

Travel size laundry detergents are typically designed to be compact, lightweight, and suitable for carry-on luggage, meeting the restrictions imposed by airlines. Like their regular-sized counterparts, travel size laundry detergents come in various forms such as liquid, powder, or even sheets, high-efficiency formulations, and with or without added fragrances. They cater to specific needs and preferences, ensuring that you can find a suitable option for your laundry requirements while on the go.

When deciding on the best travel size laundry detergent for your needs, it’s essential to consider factors such as the efficiency of the detergent, the compatibility with various types of fabrics and washing machines, and the overall size and weight for ease of transportation. Additionally, eco-friendliness and skin sensitivity should also be taken into account to ensure that the product aligns with your values and personal requirements.

In order to simplify your decision-making process, we have thoroughly researched and analyzed various options available in the market, focusing on these crucial factors. Read on to learn more about our findings and discover the ideal travel size laundry detergent to accompany you on your next adventure.

Best Travel Size Laundry Detergents

Below, we have curated a list of the best travel size laundry detergents for your convenience.

Tide Load Liquid Detergent, 3-Count

Tide Liquid Detergent 3 Machine Loads for your everyday laundry needs. Now with Acti-Lift. Easy to carry, easy to store, easy to pour. 3 individual loads.

We believe Tide Load Liquid Detergent is an excellent choice for travel due to its size, convenience, and effectiveness.

  • Compact and travel-friendly
  • Acti-Lift for effective cleaning
  • Convenient for various living situations
  • Pricey for only 3 loads
  • Packets might leak if not stored properly
  • Not the most eco-friendly option

We recently took this Tide Load Liquid Detergent on a trip, and it proved quite useful for our laundry needs. Its compact size made it a perfect companion for our journey, fitting seamlessly into our luggage without adding much weight. The Acti-Lift technology helped remove even the most stubborn stains, keeping our clothes fresh and clean throughout the vacation.

However, we noticed that the price was slightly high, considering it only contains enough detergent for three loads. Additionally, while the convenience of single-use packets was appreciated, we experienced minor leakage when not stored carefully, and it’s not the most environmentally friendly choice due to the packaging.

Despite these drawbacks, the convenience and effectiveness of Tide Load Liquid Detergent make it a valuable travel companion, particularly for vacations, dorm living, and other situations where space and portability are crucial. We’d recommend keeping these Tide detergent packets on hand for all your travel-sized laundry needs.

Tide Sink Packs Laundry Detergent

Tide Sink Packs Laundry Detergent Does 3 Loads (3 packs of 3)

Tide Sink Packs are a convenient and effective solution for washing a few items while traveling, but they’re not suitable for machine use.

  • Easy to use with sink washing
  • Refreshing scent
  • Not for machine use
  • Limited to 3 loads per pack
  • Can be pricey for frequent use

We recently took these Tide Sink Packs on our trip to Europe, and we were quite impressed with the convenience they provided. With limited access to laundry facilities, we were able to easily handwash our clothes in the sink using these packets. The concentrated formula made sure our clothes were clean and fresh throughout our travels.

The liquid detergent was easy to rinse out, leaving our clothes smelling great and feeling soft. However, it’s essential to note that these packs are not designed to be used in washing machines, so you’ll still need to rely on traditional detergent for machine washes.

Although Tide Sink Packs can be a bit pricey compared to regular detergent, they are a fantastic solution when traveling or when you need to handwash a few items quickly. We highly recommend these compact and effective detergent packets for travelers and adventurers on-the-go.

Lewis N. Clark SinkSuds Travel Laundry Detergent

Will not shrink, stretch or fade clothing. Phosphate-free and biodegradable

We highly recommend the Lewis N. Clark SinkSuds Travel Laundry Detergent for its convenience, effectiveness, and eco-friendly formula.

  • Easy to use and carry
  • Safe for all fabrics
  • Phosphate-free and biodegradable
  • Scent is very mild
  • May need multiple packets for larger items
  • Not for heavily soiled clothes

We recently used the SinkSuds Travel Laundry Detergent on a backpacking trip and found it extremely convenient to clean our clothes in various settings. The TSA-compliant packets were perfect for washing a few garments in a sink or bathtub, without causing any issues with the fabric.

The detergent is gentle on delicate items, including silk and baby clothing, and we appreciate that it’s phosphate-free and biodegradable. However, the scent is minimal, which may be a drawback to some who prefer a light fragrance on their clothes.

While SinkSuds worked well for small items, we found that we needed more than one packet for bigger garments or more than three items. It’s not the most effective solution for heavily soiled clothes, but it’s excellent for a quick refresh on the go. Overall, Lewis N. Clark SinkSuds Travel Laundry Detergent is a must-have for those who need a portable and effective solution for washing clothes while traveling.

Earthwash Travel Size Laundry Detergent Sheets

Earthwash Laundry Detergent Sheets

These Earthwash Laundry Detergent Sheets should be a top choice for your travel detergent needs due to their eco-friendly nature and practical convenience.

  • Compact size and easy to use
  • Works well with sensitive skin and allergies
  • Environmentally friendly
  • May not be as effective on tough stains
  • Powdery scent not preferred by everyone
  • Pricier than some alternatives

We recently tried the Earthwash Laundry Detergent Sheets on our latest trip, and they certainly lived up to their claims. The sheets are power-packed with plant-based cleaning power, and they dissolve quickly in the washing machine without leaving any residue. We were pleasantly surprised at how effectively they cleaned our clothes, even when faced with travel-specific stains, like sunscreen and sweat.

However, it’s worth mentioning that some tough stains might require a bit of extra work. We found the sheets to be slightly less effective on heavily soiled items, but this is a minor drawback compared to their overall convenience and effectiveness. The powdery, clean scent of the detergent was refreshing, but we understand that some people may prefer a stronger fragrance. So, if you’re sensitive to smell, you’ll appreciate the hypoallergenic formula of Earthwash detergent sheets.

One of the biggest pros of these detergent sheets is their environmentally friendly nature. Earthwash reduces plastic waste and transportation of heavy, water-filled plastic jugs, and landfill packaging common with big brand detergents. We felt good about using a product that reduces our environmental impact while still providing clean laundry. Overall, if you’re looking for a travel-friendly, eco-conscious laundry detergent option, we highly recommend Earthwash Laundry Detergent Sheets.

Seventh Generation Free & Clear Laundry Detergent Packs

Seventh Generation Laundry Detergent Packs Laundry Soap Free & Clear Washing Detergent 45 Count, Pack of 2

We highly recommend Seventh Generation Free & Clear Laundry Detergent Packs for their effective stain-fighting power and gentle formula for sensitive skin.

  • Powerful quadruple-enzyme formula tackles tough stains
  • Free of fragrances, dyes, and artificial brighteners
  • Compatible with both high-efficiency and standard washing machines
  • Individual packaging might not be the most eco-friendly option
  • Fast-dissolving formula may require some attention during use
  • On the pricier side compared to other brands

Having recently used the Seventh Generation Free & Clear Laundry Detergent Packs, we were quite impressed by the results. Their powerful quadruple-enzyme formula effortlessly removed various stains like grass, ketchup, and chocolate, restoring the clothes’ original brightness without any hassle.

The hypoallergenic detergent packs are perfect for sensitive skin, as they contain no fragrances, dyes, or artificial brighteners. We also appreciate that the detergent is EPA Safer Choice Certified and a USDA Certified Biobased Product, which makes it gentle on the environment.

However, it’s essential to note that the soluble film surrounding each pack might not be the best choice for eco-conscious shoppers, as it can add to overall waste. Additionally, the fast-dissolving detergent packs might need extra attention during use to ensure that they fully dissolve, especially in cold water washes. Despite these minor drawbacks, we believe the Seventh Generation Free & Clear Laundry Detergent Packs are an excellent investment for those seeking effective, eco-friendly, and gentle laundry detergent.

Earth Breeze Laundry Detergent Sheets

Earth Breeze Laundry Detergent Sheets - Fresh Scent - No Plastic Jug (60 Loads) 30 Sheets, Liquidless Technology… Fresh Scent, 1 Pack

Earth Breeze Laundry Detergent Sheets are a fantastic, eco-friendly option for those looking to reduce plastic waste and still achieve a powerful clean.

  • Powerful cleaning with easy-to-use sheets
  • Space-saving and travel-friendly
  • Environmentally conscious choice with no plastic packaging
  • Scent may be subtle for some users
  • Stain removal may require stronger solutions
  • Higher cost compared to some traditional detergents

We recently started using Earth Breeze Laundry Detergent Sheets and were pleased with how easy to use they were. No more lugging around heavy detergent jugs, just simply grab a sheet, toss it in the washer, and add your clothes. The sheets dissolve quickly in both hot and cold water and are compatible with all types of washing machines, including HE models.

As someone with sensitive skin, we appreciate that these sheets are hypoallergenic and free of bleaches, parabens, and phosphates. They also come in a compact, plastic-free package that fits nicely in our laundry room, making them an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional liquid detergents.

While Earth Breeze Laundry Sheets deliver a powerful clean, the scent might not be as strong as some users prefer. Additionally, for heavier stains, it may be necessary to use a separate stain remover. Although the cost per load is higher than some traditional detergents, we feel that the convenience, space-saving, and eco-friendly aspects make it a worthwhile investment.

Seventh Generation EasyDose Laundry Detergent Fresh Lavender Scent

Seventh Generation EasyDose Laundry Detergent Fresh Lavender Scent 2 Pack Ultra Concentrated Washing Detergent 23 oz

Seventh Generation EasyDose Laundry Detergent is a compact, environmentally-friendly choice for busy families with its advanced stain-fighting formula and refreshing lavender scent.

  • EasyDose Auto-Dosing Technology for perfect measurement
  • Ultra-concentrated and convenient
  • Eco-friendly design with less plastic and water usage
  • Lavender scent might not suit everyone’s preferences
  • Dispensing mechanism may require some practice
  • Could be slightly more expensive than other options

We recently tried out the Seventh Generation EasyDose Laundry Detergent and were quite impressed with its efficiency. The auto-dosing technology ensured the right amount of detergent was used every time, making our laundry experience hassle-free. The compact 23oz bottle is easy to store and handle, especially considering that it covers 66 loads of laundry.

The refreshing lavender scent was quite pleasant; however, it may not be a favorite for everyone. Made from 100% essential oils and botanical ingredients, this detergent not only gave our clothes a fresh feel, but its advanced-enzyme formula fought even the most stubborn stains. We appreciated the fact that it was made without any dyes, synthetic fragrances, or artificial brighteners.

As an eco-conscious family, Seventh Generation’s commitment to reducing environmental impact was a big win for us. The use of 60% less plastic and 50% less water in comparison to other detergent bottles supports a more sustainable DIY laundry experience. The only possible downside was the price point, which might be slightly higher than other detergent options. However, given the features and quality, we believe it is still a great investment for people looking for an environmentally-friendly and efficient laundry detergent solution.

Tru Earth Hypoallergenic Laundry Detergent Sheets

Tru Earth Hypoallergenic, Eco-friendly & Biodegradable Plastic-Free Laundry Detergent Sheets/Eco-Strips for Sensitive Skin, 32 Count (Up to 64 Loads), Fragrance-Free Fragrance-Free 32 Count (Pack of 1)

We recommend Tru Earth Laundry Detergent Sheets for travelers in need of a gentle and eco-friendly detergent solution.

  • Perfect for sensitive skin
  • Hypoallergenic and eco-friendly
  • Compact and mess-free
  • Pricey compared to traditional detergents
  • Fragrance-free option may not be preferred by all
  • Not as effective on heavy stains

We recently had the opportunity to use Tru Earth Hypoallergenic Laundry Detergent Sheets on a trip and were pleased with the results. The sheets were not only incredibly convenient, but they were also gentle enough for even the most sensitive skin. As someone with skin sensitivities, we found this to be a major plus.

The eco-friendly aspect of these sheets appealed to our environmentally conscious side. Not only are they biodegradable, but they also come in minimal packaging, which greatly reduces waste. However, we did find that they have a higher price point than traditional detergent options.

While these sheets are highly effective for regular laundry needs, they may not be as adept at tackling heavy stains. Despite this, we still believe Tru Earth Hypoallergenic Laundry Detergent Sheets are a fantastic choice for travelers who are conscious about their environmental impact and have sensitive skin. For easy packing and effective cleaning, Tru Earth is the way to go.

Tide Ultra Liquid Laundry Detergent, Original 10 Fl Oz

Tide Ultra Liquid Laundry Detergent, Original 10 Fl Oz

We highly recommend the Tide Ultra Liquid Laundry Detergent for your travel laundry needs due to its effective cleaning power and convenient size.

  • Highly effective cleaning performance
  • Convenient 10 Fl Oz size for travel
  • Classic original scent
  • Potential for leaking during travel
  • Only lasts for approximately 6 loads
  • Higher price per load compared to larger bottles

We recently used Tide Ultra Liquid Laundry Detergent during a trip and were thoroughly impressed by its cleaning capabilities. Even though it’s travel-sized, it packs the same punch as larger Tide detergent bottles in effortlessly removing dirt and grease from clothes, leaving them fresh and clean.

As frequent travelers, we appreciate the convenient 10 Fl Oz size of this detergent. It’s easy to carry around with other items in our luggage, and it doesn’t add much weight. However, it’s important to note that this bottle may only last for about 6 loads, so you might need to purchase additional detergent for longer trips.

One thing to keep in mind when using this detergent is that the bottle has the potential to leak. We suggest securing it with a layer of plastic wrap and placing it in a zip-top bag to prevent any spillage. Overall, the Tide Ultra Liquid Laundry Detergent is a reliable option for travelers in need of a compact and efficient laundry solution.

InsoGreen Eco Laundry Detergent Sheets

InsoGreen Eco Laundry Detergent Sheets

We highly recommend InsoGreen Eco Laundry Detergent Sheets for their eco-friendliness and efficient cleaning power while traveling.

  • Easy and convenient detergent sheets
  • Powerful cleaning performance
  • Fresh, pleasant scent
  • Heavily soiled loads may require two sheets
  • Packaging not explicit about full load count
  • Slightly costly compared to traditional detergents

As frequent travelers, we know the importance of packing light and using sustainable products. After using InsoGreen Eco Laundry Detergent Sheets on our trips, we were amazed at their efficient cleaning capabilities. Just one of these dissolvable sheets was enough to clean a regular load of laundry, leaving our clothes smelling fresh with a non-overpowering fragrance.

These eco-friendly sheets eliminate the need for bulky, plastic liquid detergent bottles, thus reducing plastic waste. We also love how they are zero waste and ideal for both hot and cold laundry cycles. However, be aware that heavily soiled loads may require two sheets, and the packaging can be a bit deceptive about the total number of full loads included.

Overall, InsoGreen Eco Laundry Detergent Sheets are a fantastic travel companion for those wanting a convenient and environmentally friendly laundry solution. While the cost might be slightly higher compared to traditional detergents, the ease of use, fresh scent, and eco-consciousness make these detergent sheets worth the investment for travelers.

SinkSuds Travel Laundry Detergent

SinkSuds Travel Laundry Detergent Liquid Soap + Odor Eliminator for All Fabrics Including Delicates, (TSA Compliant), 12 Sink Packets (0.25 fl oz Each) + 2-4in Stoppers, White, 2 Pack 1 Count (Pack of 1)

We highly recommend the SinkSuds Travel Laundry Detergent for its convenience and effectiveness while on-the-go.

  • Compact and TSA compliant
  • Effective on all fabric types
  • Biodegradable and phosphate-free
  • Needs proper storage for partially used packets
  • Unscented, which may not be preferred by some users
  • Eye irritant – be cautious when using

We recently tried the SinkSuds Travel Laundry Detergent, and it quickly became a must-have for all our trips. The compact, TSA compliant packets are perfect for slipping into our carry-on or backpack, ready for use whenever needed.

Not only is it convenient, but SinkSuds is also effective on various fabric types without causing any shrinkage or fading. We even tested it on our delicate clothes and were pleased with the results. Moreover, we appreciate that it’s biodegradable and phosphate-free, making it an environmentally friendly choice.

There are a few downsides to consider, though. Once a packet is opened, finding proper storage can be tricky to prevent wasting the remaining detergent. Also, the product is unscented, which may not appeal to everyone. And, as it’s an eye irritant, be cautious when handling SinkSuds.

SinkSuds Travel Laundry Detergent Liquid Soap + Odor Eliminator for All Fabrics

We highly recommend the Lewis N. Clark SinkSuds Travel Laundry Detergent for its convenience, effectiveness, and portability.

  • TSA compliant and perfect size for travel
  • Effective on various fabric types
  • Only includes 6 packets
  • Some users reported missing sink stopper
  • May not be suitable for large loads

Our experience using the Lewis N. Clark SinkSuds travel laundry detergent was truly convenient. Its compact packaging and TSA-compliant dimensions made it ideal for washing clothes during our vacation. We found it quite simple to use; just dissolve the detergent in water, wash the clothes, and hang them to dry. With 1 packet being enough for 2-3 garments, it made our sink washing experience a breeze!

Another remarkable feature of SinkSuds is its versatility – it is gentle on delicates and baby clothing and leaves no residue. Additionally, it’s a green choice, thanks to its biodegradable and phosphate-free formula. Knowing that we are using an eco-friendly product while traveling makes us feel great! Despite its travel-friendly size, do not underestimate its cleaning power; our clothes smelled fresh and felt clean after each wash.

While the Lewis N. Clark SinkSuds travel laundry detergent is a fantastic travel companion, there are a couple of minor downsides. We found that it may not be adequate for larger laundry loads, and some users have mentioned receiving packages without the included sink stopper. Regardless, the overall convenience, effectiveness, and eco-friendliness of this product make it a travel essential worth packing.

SinkSuds Travel Laundry Detergent Liquid Soap

SinkSuds Travel Laundry Detergent Liquid Soap + Odor Eliminator for All Fabrics Including Delicates, Sink-Packets, 0.25 Fl Oz (Pack of 16) 16 Count (Pack of 1)

We recommend the SinkSuds Travel Laundry Detergent for easy, on-the-go laundering of your clothes during trips.

  • Limited size options
  • Unscented only
  • Some packaging issues reported

During our recent travels, we tried out the SinkSuds Travel Laundry Detergent Liquid Soap and found it incredibly handy for laundering clothes on-the-go. The compact, carry-on friendly size made it a breeze to take with us wherever we went.

One thing we particularly liked about SinkSuds was its compatibility with all types of fabrics, including delicates and baby clothing. We didn’t have to worry about shrinking, stretching, or fading, which is always a concern when using new laundry products. Plus, it’s phosphate-free and biodegradable, adding to its eco-friendliness.

However, a few downsides we encountered were the limited size options and the fact that it only comes in an unscented variety. Additionally, some users have reported packaging issues, but we personally did not have any issues in our experience. Overall, if you’re looking for a convenient and travel-sized laundry detergent option, SinkSuds is a great choice for your next adventure.

Tide Travel Sink Packets, 3-Count

Tide Travel Sink Packets have just enough Tide liquid detergent to wash a few items in the sink when traveling. Includes 3 Packets - each just enough for a sink full of suds.

We highly recommend the Tide Travel Sink Packets for those looking for convenience and effectiveness in a compact laundry solution while on the go.

  • Easy to use for quick washing
  • Effective cleaning with Acti-Lift technology
  • Not cost-effective for larger loads
  • Limited to sink washing
  • Only 3 packets included

During our travels, we found the Tide Travel Sink Packets to be highly useful for washing a few clothing items quickly and effectively in the sink. The compact size allowed us to easily fit them into our toiletry bags, making them a perfect travel companion.

Each packet contains just enough detergent for a sink full of suds with Tide’s Acti-Lift formula included to provide advanced stain-fighting power. This ensured our clothes looked fresh and clean, even when we only had limited access to laundry facilities.

However, we did find that these packets were not the most cost-effective solution for larger loads or more frequent washing. They are best suited for emergency washing or small laundry tasks, such as washing undergarments and socks. Overall, these convenient Tide Travel Sink Packets are a great addition to any traveler’s bag for tackling small laundry tasks on the go.

Tide 9 Piece 1-Load Travel Packets, Original

travel size laundry detergents

We recommend the Tide 9 Piece 1-Load Travel Packets for their compact size and excellent cleaning power, making them a must-have for travellers.

  • Original Tide scent
  • Powerful stain-fighting capabilities
  • Compact and easy to carry
  • Potential for packet leaks
  • Price per load may be higher
  • Not suitable for hand washing

Our experience with the Tide 9 Piece 1-Load Travel Packets has been positive, as they have consistently delivered powerful cleaning action on our clothes during trips. The original scent is familiar and leaves a pleasant smell on our garments.

However, we did face some issues with the packets potentially leaking during transport. We found that placing the packets in individual plastic bags can help prevent any mess. It’s also essential to note that these travel-size packets are designed for machine use only, and might not be suitable for those looking to hand wash their clothes.

In conclusion, the Tide 9 Piece 1-Load Travel Packets provide a convenient and effective solution for laundry on the go. Keep them in mind for your next trip but be mindful of the leak potential and machine-use-only limitation.

Buying Guide

When it comes to selecting the best travel size laundry detergent, it’s essential to consider a few key factors. In this buying guide, we’ll discuss the features you should look for, offer some advice, and provide information to help you make an informed decision.

Form of Detergent

Travel size laundry detergents come in various forms, such as liquid, powder, and sheets. Each has its pros and cons:

  • Liquid: Easy to use and pre-treat stains, but may leak or spill in your luggage.
  • Powder: Lightweight and easy to measure, but can be messy and may not dissolve properly in some washing machines.
  • Sheets: Compact, easy to carry, and won’t spill, but may not be as effective on tough stains as liquid or powder.

Environmentally Friendly

If you’re concerned about the environment, look for detergents that are biodegradable, phosphate-free, and made from plant-based ingredients. These options tend to have less impact on aquatic ecosystems and reduce plastic waste, as they often come in eco-friendly packaging.

Scent and Fragrance-Free Options

Everybody has different preferences when it comes to how their laundry smells. Some travelers enjoy fresh, scented clothes, while others might have allergies or sensitivities to fragrances. Choose a detergent that meets your needs, whether it’s a pleasant scent or a fragrance-free option.

Size and Portability

Since you’ll be carrying the detergent in your luggage, select a product that is compact, lightweight, and TSA-compliant. Keep in mind that liquid detergents should usually not exceed 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) per container for carry-on luggage on flights.

Ease-of-Use and Efficiency

Choose a detergent that is easy to use, with clear instructions for measuring and application. Additionally, look for a product that works well in various water temperatures and conditions, as you may encounter different types of washing machines and environments during your travels.

Buyer's Guide: Travel Size Laundry Detergent

Key considerations.

  • Packaging Size : Since the main purpose is to limit the weight and space occupied in your luggage, the size of the detergent package is crucial. Look for compact and lightweight options that won't weigh you down during your travels.
  • Liquid vs. Sheets : Travel laundry detergents come in various forms – liquid, sheets, or even capsules. Consider the convenience and ease of use each form provides. Liquid detergents may require a spill-proof bottle or bag, while sheets and capsules offer a simpler solution.
  • Stain-fighting Power : From dirt to food stains, you want a detergent that can effectively tackle various stains. Look for travel size options that offer strong stain-fighting power, ensuring your clothes come out fresh and clean.
  • Scent : While not necessary, having a pleasing scent on your freshly laundered clothes can enhance your overall travel experience. Choose a detergent that offers a fragrance you enjoy, but be mindful of any potential allergic reactions.
  • Eco-friendly Options : If sustainability is important to you, consider eco-friendly travel size laundry detergents. Look for biodegradable or plant-based formulas that won't harm the environment during your travels.

Types of Travel Size Laundry Detergents

  • Liquid Detergents : These are the most common type of travel size detergents. They offer versatility and are available in various bottle sizes. However, be cautious with packaging to avoid leaks and spills.
  • Detergent Sheets : These lightweight and compact sheets are a convenient option for travelers. Simply toss a sheet into your laundry and let it dissolve. The downsides are limited washing power and potential for accidental tearing.
  • Detergent Capsules : These pre-measured capsules offer the ultimate convenience, with no need to measure the detergent. However, they may not be as readily available as other options and might not offer as many washes per pack.

Clothing has to stand up to so much on the road — wine spills, peak-ascending sweat, germ-ridden public spaces, and, for ultralight packers, repetitive wear. That's when having the perfect laundry bag tucked away in your suitcase becomes your closest ally.

To help you find the perfect one to stash, and even wash, your favorite garments, we researched the options across many designs, materials, and price points. Our top pick is the Eagle Creek Pack-it Isolate Clean/Dirty Cube for its antimicrobial treatment, adaptable compartment, and durable, ultra-light material. In addition to this do-it-all bag, our list includes everything from waterproof bags to hanging bags, too.

Best Overall

Eagle creek isolate clean/dirty cube.

This versatile laundry cube isolates clean and dirty clothes while keeping water out and odor away.

The floating divider does mean that dirty and clean clothes are not totally separated.

The Pack-it Isolate Clean/Dirty Cube by Eagle Creek easily checks off our wish list for a travel laundry bag. From the antimicrobial treated material that actively fights odors building in your clothes to its ultra-lightweight and durable translucent ripstop polyester fabric so you can see what is packed where, this machine-washable bag is designed to help make packing — and the laundry itself — easier to handle.

Backed by Eagle Creek's lifetime warranty, this water-resistant 7.5-liter cube features grab handles for unpacking quickly and self-repairing zippers for the toughest travel days. Of course, the free-floating internal divider provides as much or as little space as you need to separate reusable worn clothes from the beyond-dirty. Thanks to its thoughtful design with utility and versatility in mind, travelers can keep reaching for the Pack-it Isolate cube year after year.

The Details: Antimicrobial poly ripstop | 1.8 ounces | Zipper

Best Collapsible

Mumi laundry bag.

This collapsible bag folds down to just 5 by 8 inches, making it an easy item to tuck away into your suitcase for later use.

The PVC mesh doesn’t easily disintegrate, so the bag has a large environmental footprint.

Though this is not the greenest option, it is one of the lightest laundry bags available as the ultra-packable bag folds into an even tinier stow bag. Apart from slimming down the amount of space the laundry bag takes up, Mumi also recommends using the small storage bag to stash small additional items when the laundry bag is in use. The straightforward collapsible laundry bag also includes a folding hanger for your convenience. Another added benefit of this small-but-mighty laundry bag is that it is odor- and water-resistant. This highly functional laundry bag is undoubtedly best for those wishing to dedicate the least amount of suitcase space.

The Details: PVC mesh | 1.58 ounces | Zipper

Best Odor-blocking

Stnky wash bag.

The inner mesh bag allows clothes to breathe while the outer layer locks in odors, moisture, and germs.

It’s a bit small.

This double-layered bag is best known for sealing in odors, but it is perfect for those who want to avoid pulling every piece of clothing out of the bag. As a contact-free laundry bag, the inner mesh bag can fall from the inside allowing you to drop the clothes straight from the bag into the washing machine. Additionally, the entire pack can be washed and dried at high temperatures to kill germs and odor-causing bacteria.

The Details: Mesh | 4.2 ounces | Zipper

Best Machine-washable

Grove co. laundry bag set.

These bags are just the right size for zipping up your delicates so they are ready to toss in the washing machine straight out of your luggage.

The mesh bags are not meant to block odor, so be careful where you pack them.

Made by a Certified B Corporation , this set of bags for delicates is one of the most affordable and packable options. Designed for an easy transfer as you unpack, these mesh delicate bags will allow your laundry to breathe until it is time to hit the washing machine. The Grove Co. set is also dryer-safe and was created to help maintain the shape of your delicate laundry. Unlike some mesh laundry bags, this duo of medium and large zippered bags can go directly from the washing machine into the dryer to continue protecting your delicates throughout the entire cycle.

The Details: Mesh | Zipper

Best Large-capacity

Homest travel laundry bag.

The bag itself is machine washable and durable.

Because it’s large, you may not want to stuff it full before repacking in your suitcase.

This laundry bag two-pack is made of thick nylon with ripstop stitching, so you can really stuff the bag with all of your dirty items. While it may become too thick for a carry-on or small checked bag, this is the perfect laundry bag for longterm stays or even camping trips. The simple drawstring closure allows you to fill the bag and bring to your hotel's laundry or stick in the back of your vehicle without the risk of losing any items along the way. Plus, the bag is so lightweight and compact on its own that you can pop it right into your luggage and fill as needed.

The Details: Nylon | 0.44 pounds | Drawstring

Cotopaxi Travel Cube Bundle

Made with lightweight materials and breathable mesh, this cube bundle includes an array of sizes ranging from 2 to 10 liters.

Because the sides of these bags are mesh, odors can spread from dirty clothes to clean clothes.

Fashioned by employees with the creative agency to choose their own colorful patterns, the Cotopaxi travel cube bundle includes 2-, 3- and 10-liter repurposed nylon and mesh-sided bags. Though the nylon front and back of the bags are helpful in blocking odor transfer, the bags of dirty clothes should be separated from clean clothes in a backpack or suitcase to prevent odors from settling into the fibers of clean clothes. These bags are well-made for those looking to stave off mold and bacteria growth on dirty clothes. Because this set packs down so well when empty, you can easily take all of them along or just the bag you know you will need for your trip.

The Details: Recycled nylon and mesh | 1 ounce per 2-liter capacity | Zipper

Best Water-resistant

Helly hansen scout wash bag.

Helly Hansen

This affordable option will protect its contents from getting wet even in the worst of weather.

This bag is not designed to fold flat or compress, meaning it will need to fit into a suitcase at its existing size.

Made with water-resistant, TPU-treated polyester, this modular bag is designed to prevent any kind of leak from seeping in — or out. This Norwegian-designed bag was created with harsh weather in mind and can easily fit into any existing system of packing cubes. Its mesh pocket is handy for tucking underwear, buffs, tank tops, or any other small, light layer of clothing away. Otherwise, roll up your layers and neatly stack them in this small wash bag until you get home. The handle is perfect for hanging the bag on your doorknob until you are ready to tackle the latest adventure's laundry.

The Details: Polyester, TPU | 7.05 ounces | Zipper

Best Organization

Modoker travel duffel bag.

With a designated place for everything, this bag provides the ultimate organization and surprising opportunities for stashing laundry.

This carry-on bag is primarily designed to stash clean clothes and gear so there are no odor-blocking features.

While this bag is an easy carry-on choice for any traveler looking for specialized organization options, this highly compartmentalized duffel can also easily hold laundry in its hidden pockets. Though soiled clothes can certainly be stuffed into the primary compartment, dirty clothes can also be stored in the hanging garment section as well as the shoe pocket on the left side of the bag. Keep in mind that this 45-liter bag is made of nylon, so it should easily pack even your largest pieces of dirty clothing.

The Details: Nylon | 2.53 pounds | Zipper

Best Durable

Patagonia black hole mlc cube.

Patagonia uses environmentally friendly recycled materials and supports living wages with a Fair Trade supply chain.

This compartmentalized bag does not completely fold flat.

Made with 100 percent post-consumer recycled polyester ripstop and a post-industrial recycled TPU-film laminate, this 12-liter bag is large enough to hold most of your dirty clothes within the primary compartment under the roll-top closure. There is, however, a secondary compartment that features a zipper closure. While the mesh compartments of the more traditional 10-liter Black Hole Cube are great, the higher level of compartmentalization in the Black Hole MLC Cube is appreciated for those who want to pack away a worn shirt that might need to be used again. Apart from its dual-compartment versatility, you can feel good about buying Patagonia's recycled materials. Not only are they reused, but the TPU-treated polyester ripstop is built to resist punctures, fraying, and anything else you might encounter.

The Details: Recycled polyester ripstop | 6.9 ounces | Roll-top and zipper

Best Compression

Tripped travel gear the carry-on set.

Tripped Travel Gear

The different shapes and sizes can accommodate a variety of clothing such as sweaters, shoes, and stacks of T-shirts.

Not all clothes will fit into the cubes or can be compressed.

The Carry-on Set is great for those hoping to maximize the limited space inside a carry-on with a pack of seven tough bags. Made with ripstop polyurethane fabric and reinforced zippers, this compression set can multitask as a neat place to stash your dirty clothes — especially if those clothes include caked-on grime that needs to be contained beyond the included toggle-cord laundry bag. Polyurethane is designed to keep moisture out, which is great for your clean clothes and even better for keeping dirty clothes separated. While you won't likely have to worry about the bags themselves ripping thanks to the material, the compression zippers are also double-stitched to make them as strong as can be. Larger, bulkier clothing such as heavy winter coats or very chunky sweaters might not be well suited to be stashed away in these bags for laundry to be completed later. Instead, these bags are better suited to lighter layers that can easily fit into the cubes without over-filling them.

The Details: Ripstop polyurethane fabric | 14.4 ounces | Zipper

Best Utility

Scrubba portable wash bag.

The water-tight seal is perfect for containing soiled clothes while the flexible built-in washboard adds unparalleled utility.

You will need to pack laundry detergent to wash on the go.

While this laundry bag and portable washing machine might bring backpacking to mind, the ultra-light bag that packs down to a pocket-size square can be handy indoors, too. Designed with convenience and the environment in mind, Scrubba bags cut down on the amount of water needed to wash a few essential items at a time and without any electricity — helping you clean your clothes while you travel . The roll-top and buckle closure with an air valve ensures no dirty water sloshes out of the bag while you work the clothing against the washboard with full contact. The transparent window on the side of the bag also allows you to see any section of clothing that might need a bit of extra scrubbing. While the bag can simply serve to hold your dirty clothes apart from clean items until you get home, it is nice to know you can tackle a stain before it sets or reuse a soiled garment before you get home. To wash clothes using this laundry bag, you’ll need detergent; however, Earth Breeze Laundry Detergent Liquidless Eco Sheets can be used for hand-washing clothing.

The Details: Polyether, TPU | 5.3 ounces | Roll-top with buckle and air valve

Tips for Buying Laundry Bags

Prioritize material.

Each type of material presents an advantage. Polyester and nylon are both lightweight synthetic fibers that are designed to endure wear and tear. Polyester will repel water while nylon will absorb water. Neither are breathable, but natural fibers such as cotton are. Pay attention to what material best suits your needs and style of travel.

Consider the bag’s features

Those who travel with delicate garments will likely want a breathable, protective bag that can fold or hang. Others who travel under intense weather conditions should look for a durable, waterproof option. Adventure enthusiasts will likely want a laundry bag that allows clothing to breathe and prevents bacterial growth between adrenaline-pumping activities. You'll also want a bag that has a secure closure that's easy to use and won't break even if you fully stuff the bag with dirty items.

Check for return policies and warranties

After investing in an excellent travel laundry bag, the last thing you want is to buy another one due to a defect or a short return period. Check the company policies to ensure you can get a refund should you need to exchange the laundry bag for a different option that better suits you. It is always worth noting the warranty as well as learning about free replacements and the corresponding time frame of availability.

Travel laundry bags are about so much more than containing dirty clothes while on the go or having clothes ready for washing machine drop-off. While the idea of protecting your clean clothes from germs and grime worn clothes might have collected, a separate laundry bag can also help prevent suitcases from developing an odor. Of course, laundry bags also help bring a certain level of organization to the suitcase, making it easier to see what clothing you have left to work with.

There are two ways to wash a travel laundry bag, but the method depends on the material the laundry bag is made of. Some synthetic fibers can withstand the heat of a hot cycle in the washing machine. Others might have to be washed on a cool cycle.

Some travel laundry bags are made from materials that are too delicate for the washing machine altogether. In this case, use a gentle detergent and cool water to soak and wash the bag in the sink. A solution made with mild soap and cool water can also be used to spot-clean laundry bags as needed too.

Look for specific directions when buying a laundry bag. Don't forget to double-check its tag before washing it too.

Similar to the methods of washing travel laundry bags, not all can handle the heat of a dryer. Some bags are designed to be used in a dryer, but far more must air dry. Again, consider this when buying a laundry bag and remember to properly care for whichever one you choose.

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

travel size laundry detergent

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

travel size laundry detergent

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

travel size laundry detergent

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

travel size laundry detergent

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

travel size laundry detergent

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

travel size laundry detergent

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

travel size laundry detergent

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

travel size laundry detergent

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

travel size laundry detergent

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

travel size laundry detergent

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

For some more inspiration, you can look through the Street Photography of Moscow photographer Artem Zhitenev  and check out 33 of my photos taken in Moscow .

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

travel size laundry detergent

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

Read Next: Things To Do on Socotra

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

Moscow itinerary

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

Random Russian guy

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!
