Bermuda Cruises

Passports are required for all travelers, including citizens of the U.S. and Canada, who enter or re-enter the U.S. by air, land or sea .

There are a few notable exceptions pertaining to land and sea border crossings:

  • U.S. citizens on cruises that begin and end in the same U.S. port and travel to destinations in Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean (except the French West Indies for certain cruise lines), the Bahamas or Bermuda are able to re-enter the U.S. with proof of citizenship other than a passport or passport card. Acceptable proof of citizenship includes a U.S. state-issued original or certified copy of their birth certificate (hospital certificates are not acceptable) or a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or a Certificate of Naturalization and a government-issued photo ID (such as a driver's license). Passports are required for cruises that begin in one U.S. port and end in another.
  • Carnival, Celebrity, Disney, Holland America, Princess and Royal Caribbean cruises that visit islands in the French West Indies (Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint Martin and Saint Barts) require a valid passport regardless of departure port.
  • Children under the age of 16 who are citizens of the U.S. or Canada are exempt from the passport requirement for land and sea border crossings. In lieu of a passport, children are able to use a U.S. state-issued original or certified copy of their birth certificate (hospital certificates are not acceptable) or a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or a Certificate of Naturalization as proof of citizenship for entry into the U.S. by land or by sea. Children entering or re-entering the U.S. by air are required to have a valid passport.
  • When minors are traveling with only one adult, Holland America and Princess require that all passengers have a valid passport.
  • A new, lower-cost alternative to the passport, called a passport card, is acceptable for entries into the U.S. by land or sea. The passport card is not acceptable for air travel.
  • The following cruise lines require a passport for all sailings, regardless of destination or port of departure: Azamara, Cunard, Hurtigruten, Oceania, P&O, Paul Gauguin, Regent, Seabourn, SeaDream, Silversea, Star Clippers and Windstar.

Photocopies of required documentation are not acceptable in any circumstance.

Even though passports are not required at this time for U.S. citizens who sail on cruises to the above destinations that begin and end in the same U.S. port, we strongly recommend that all cruise passengers travel with a valid passport anyway. This is because guests who need to fly to or from the U.S. unexpectedly during their cruise will likely experience significant delays and complications related to booking airline tickets and entering the U.S. if they do not have a valid passport with them. For example, a passenger missing a cruise departure due to a late inbound flight to Miami would need a passport to fly to meet the ship at the next port. Similarly, guests needing to fly to or through the U.S. before their cruise ends because of medical, family, personal or business emergencies, missing a ship's departure from a port of call, or a mechanical problem of some sort with the ship, would need a passport. Of course, situations like these are rare, but they can happen.

Passports are not required for U.S. citizens traveling to or returning directly from Hawaii or a U.S. territory, including Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Swains Island, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Passports are required for cruise travel to all International destinations not mentioned above, and for cruises that involve air travel that begins or ends outside of the U.S. Passports must be valid for at least six months after the last day of travel.

Vacations To Go has partnered with CIBT, the largest and most well-established travel visa and passport company in the world, to offer you a fast, easy and reliable way to obtain a passport or other document for travel anywhere in the world. For information about obtaining a passport or passport card for the first time, or about renewing a passport or passport card, click here to visit the CIBT Web site.

Legal U.S. Residents (Non-Citizens)

Legal permanent residents of the U.S. must have a valid passport from their country of citizenship and a valid Alien Registration Card (Green Card) to enter or re-enter the U.S.

Non-U.S., Non-Canada Citizens

The following countries participate in a visa waiver program with the U.S., and citizens of these countries must have a machine-readable passport for entry into the U.S.:

Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom

Citizens of the countries listed above who do not possess machine-readable passports, and citizens of countries not listed above must present a valid passport and a valid United States visa upon entry into the U.S. For those whose travel plans include multiple entries into the U.S., such as a cruise that begins and ends in a U.S. port, a multiple-entry visa is required.

All travelers, including U.S. and Canada citizens , are responsible for verifying visa requirements with consular officials, and obtaining visas where required, for every country visited during their trip, including countries visited via connecting flights.

Always check with your Vacations To Go cruise counselor at the time of booking to verify the documentation requirements for your vacation.

If your summer cruise takes you to Bermuda, you must apply for a Bermuda health authorization visa before being allowed to embark on the cruise ship.

What is a Bermuda Travel Authorization Visa?

This is a health process that all visitors, both by air and sea, need to complete in order to visit the island during the pandemic. It’s part of the country’s entry requirements and needs to be approved before you are allowed to visit. This process is separate from your cruise ticket and contract and needs to be completed on your own. The cruise line is not responsible for making sure you have secured the health visa before your cruise.

It should be noted that the cruise lines have been working with the Bermuda government to try to find ways around this process but have not been successful as of this writing. The health visa will have to be done for the foreseeable future.

It’s also important to note that the Bermuda Travel Authorization Visa must be obtained by every cruise ship passenger, regardless of whether they actually plan to disembark upon arrival or not.

Bermuda Travel Requirements for Visitors Arriving by Cruise Ship

All Bermuda visitors arriving as cruise ship passengers aged 2 and over require an approved Travel Authorization before the cruise ship departs from the homeport terminal if Bermuda is the first port of call, or before arrival to Bermuda if Bermuda is not the first port of call.

Children under 2 years old do not need to apply for a Travel Authorization.

All non-resident passengers aged 12 and older must be fully vaccinated to be landed in Bermuda.

Unvaccinated children aged 11 and under are welcome to enter Bermuda with a vaccinated parent or guardian. Those children will take on the vaccination status of the parent or guardian traveling with them and will be allowed off of the ship.

Unvaccinated cruise ship passengers aged 12 years and up click here for more information on travel requirements for Bermuda. Unvaccinated cruise ship passengers 12 years and over must remain on the ship.

Cruise operators that are calling to Bermuda this summer include Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Oceania Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, and Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

How to Complete the Bermuda Travel Authorization

The health visa is easy to fill by going to the Bermuda Travel Authorization website, uploading the proper documentation, and paying the $40 fee (Visa or Mastercard only).

You will then receive the paperwork by email once approved. Due to processing times, this should be done ahead of your cruise.

As of May 2022, this process is still in effect. Check with your cruise line to make sure you satisfy the correct paperwork.

Tazzari Electric Vehicle from Bermuda Car Rental

If you plan to book an electric vehicle to get around the island, make that reservation as early as possible. There are no regular car rentals in Bermuda for visitors, and only electric vehicles or scooters are allowed. There is only so much inventory.

Royal Naval Dockyard has one electric car rental location, Bermuda Rental Car (Oleander Cycles), from which you can pick up. Otherwise, you’ll have to take a ferry or taxi to St. George or Hamilton to pick it up from another location.

Tip# 5: Take advantage of the Mini-Bus Shuttles & Public Transporation

Bermuda has a great public transportation system, including shuttles, taxis, ferries, and buses. You can easily get around without renting a car or scooter.

The Mini-Bus shuttles outside the Royal Dockyard are a great way to get to Horseshoe Bay and back for $7 per person (each way).

If you plan to use public buses, buy a daily bus pass, it includes ferries too.

So if you’re wondering if Bermuda has a curfew or if you must be back on the ship by a certain time, there is not. You can come and go as you, please. We want to make that clear as we frequently hear this question.

Being fully vaccinated means that you have received all the required doses of the vaccine and have allowed enough time for it to take effect. The Latest BC Travel Restrictions: What You Need to Know

Before boarding a cruise ship bound for Bermuda, passengers are required to provide certain documents and proof of vaccination. These requirements are in place to ensure the safety of all passengers and to comply with the regulations set by the Bermuda government.

First and foremost, all passengers are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. This means that they must have received all doses of the approved COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 days prior to the cruise departure date. Proof of vaccination is a must, and passengers will need to provide documentation showing that they have received the necessary doses.

The accepted forms of proof of vaccination may vary depending on the cruise line, but in general, passengers can provide one of the following documents:

  • COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card: This is the most common and widely accepted form of proof. It is a physical card that passengers receive when they get vaccinated. The card includes information such as the vaccine manufacturer, date of administration, and lot number. Passengers will need to show this card to the cruise line for verification.
  • Digital Vaccine Passport: Some cruise lines may accept digital vaccine passports or certificates. These are electronic records that provide proof of vaccination. Passengers can download and store these documents on their smartphones or other electronic devices. These digital certificates are usually linked to a government or healthcare database and can be easily verified by the cruise line.
  • Other Valid Documentation: In some cases, cruise lines may accept other forms of vaccination documentation, such as a letter from a healthcare provider or a digital record from a state or government health department. These documents should clearly state the passenger's name, date of vaccination, and the type of vaccine received.

It is important for passengers to check the specific requirements of their cruise line before traveling to ensure they have the proper documentation. The cruise line will provide detailed instructions on how and when to submit the proof of vaccination.

Passengers should also be prepared to show their proof of vaccination multiple times during their journey, including at the embarkation port, during onboard activities, and when disembarking in Bermuda. It is recommended to keep a copy of the vaccination documentation in case the original documents get lost or damaged.

In addition to the vaccination requirements, passengers may also need to comply with other COVID-19 safety measures, such as pre-travel testing, mask-wearing, and social distancing guidelines. These requirements can vary depending on the cruise line and the current regulations in place.

It is important for passengers to stay updated with the latest information from the cruise line and the Bermuda government regarding the documentation and requirements for travel. By following these guidelines and providing the necessary proof of vaccination, passengers can enjoy a safe and smooth journey to Bermuda.

The Basics of Air Travel Restrictions on Creams: What You Need to Know

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact travel worldwide, many countries have implemented specific testing requirements for incoming passengers to help control the spread of the virus. Bermuda, a popular cruise destination, is no exception.

If you are planning to travel to Bermuda on a cruise, it is important to be aware of the specific COVID-19 testing requirements that are in place. These requirements may vary depending on the cruise line and other factors, so it is recommended to check with your cruise operator for the most up-to-date information before traveling.

One of the main COVID-19 testing requirements for passengers traveling to Bermuda on a cruise is the need to provide a negative PCR test result. This test must be taken no more than 5 days before your departure to Bermuda. It is important to note that rapid antigen tests are not accepted for entry into Bermuda. Only PCR tests are currently considered valid.

You can find flights to Bermuda from either the US, Canada, or the UK. The cities that fly direct to Bermuda include Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Charlotte, Farmingdale, Fort Lauderdale, London, Montreal, New York , Philadelphia, Raleigh, Teterboro, Toronto, Turks & Cacios, and White Plains.

Visiting Bermuda on a Cruise

Visiting Bermuda on a cruise is definitely one of the best ways to experience this island, especially if you are in the NYC area, Boston, or near Miami. Companies that cruise to Bermuda include Carnival, Celebrity, MSC, Norwegian, Oceania, Regent Seven Sea, and Royal Caribbean.

We normally go on Royal Caribbean's ship out of Bayonne, NJ, or from one of NCL's ships straight out of Manhattan (this one has incredible views sailing out!).

The shortest cruise to Bermuda you can find is 5 nights, leaving from Bayonne, Manhattan, Brooklyn, or Baltimore, giving you 2 days/one night in Bermuda. The most common itinerary is a 7-day cruise, which has 3 days/two nights in Bermuda, which is the one that we recommend.

You can also find longer cruises up to fifteen days, on the more luxury ships of MSC or Oceania. These cruises leave from NY or Boston, and pair Bermuda with Caribbean islands on the itinerary.

Entry Requirements for Visiting Bermuda on a Cruise

Visiting Bermuda on a cruise and visiting via flight have different requirements, so here is everything you need to know.

What do U.S. Citizens Need to Travel to Bermuda?

US citizens who are flying to Bermuda will in fact need their passport.

Do You Need a Passport to go to Bermuda on a Cruise Ship?

If you are visiting Bermuda on a cruise ship, you actually do not NEED a passport (although we recommend it). In the case that you do not have a passport, forget it, or it is expired, you can bring your birth certificate along with your driver's license.

When you get off the ship, you will need to bring a government-issued ID with you. We suggest bringing your license, and leaving your passport on the ship.

Are There Any Covid Requirements for Bermuda?

All Covid-related requirements have now been lifted for visiting Bermuda. If you are going on a cruise, be sure to double-check with your cruise line if they require anything. Most of them by now do not require vaccinations or a negative Covid test. However, it's important to check, as every cruise line is different.

Visiting Bermuda on a Cruise: Local Adjustments

Whenever you travel somewhere new, there are things to keep in mind such as differences in language, electrical outlets, tipping, and water potability. Here are some of the things to keep in mind if you are visiting Bermuda.

What Language is Mostly Spoken in Bermuda?

The official language in Bermuda is English. The accent is actually quite unique, as it feels like a mix between the British and the American accent.

Currency Used in Bermuda

Despite being part of the UK, Bermuda does have its own currency, which is the Bermudian dollar. It is equal to the USD, so every price you see will be the same in local currency or in US dollars.

Can You Use US Dollars in Bermuda?

Being frequented by so many Americans, it is pretty common that US dollars are accepted, so you will not need to exchange your money. However, if you use USD, a lot of times change will be given in Bermudian dollars. We would suggest using your credit card when you can, and bringing small bills with you if you are paying for anything in cash.

What Type of Plug is Used in Bermuda?

Bermuda uses the same electrical outlets as the UK, which is the for the plug that has three rectangular prongs in the shape of a triangle.

If you are taking a cruise to Bermuda, the cruise ships typically have both European and American outlets, but if you are visiting Bermuda by flight, you'll need to get a travel adapter.

Is the Water OK to Drink in Bermuda?

The water in Bermuda is clean, and is perfectly safe to drink from the tap. We would suggest bringing a reusable water bottle , and filling it up rather than purchasing plastic water bottles.

Is Tipping Expected in Bermuda?

The tipping culture in Bermuda is actually more similar to the US than it is to the UK. It is pretty common to tip between 15-18% or up to 20% if you've had great service.

There are many restaurants that will add a service charge to the bill, so check this before adding an extra tip on top.

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #1: Check Out the Iconic Horse Shoe Bay

If you are visiting Bermuda on a cruise for just one day, then this is a typical go-to decision for cruisers.

Horse Shoe Bay, Bermuda on a cruise

Horse Shoe Bay is the most iconic beach in Bermuda, and is definitely a must-see! It has those quintessential turquoise waters, paired with Bermuda's stunning pink sands, and gorgeous cliffs surrounding it.

Growing up going on cruises to Bermuda, this is the exact spot that my family would go each year. You can easily spend the day enjoying this beach swimming in the calm waters, exploring the small coves, and jumping off the cliffs.

Just be ready for the crowds, as this is the number one tourist spot on the island! This time, we decided to go there for sunrise to escape those crowds, and actually doing that this is the time you will find all of the locals enjoying it!

Horse Shoe Bay, Bermuda on a cruise

Horse Shoe Bay is an incredible place to witness for sunrise.

Want to know more about visiting Horse Shoe Bay? We have a full guide coming up!

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #2: Relax at Tobacco Bay

Another one of the most popular beaches in Bermuda is located in the north of the island, in St Georges. Tobacco Bay features stunning hues of turquoise waters, and is actually one of the best places to snorkel on the island!

With unique rock formations and amazing waters, it's no wonder this spot has become so popular amongst tourists.

You can rent a chair and umbrella, or simply sit on the rocky areas for free. There is a restaurant as well, and you can rent snorkel gear to check out all of the unique marine life in this stunning cove!

Tobacco Bay is one of the most beautiful swimming spots in Bermuda.

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #3: Hop Around the Lesser Known Beaches

While most people flock to Horse Shoe Bay, there are actually so many stunning beaches around Bermuda! I personally prefer to go to the smaller beaches, as this is where you'll find less crowds, and some true hidden gems.

Some of the beaches that you can add to your list are actually right near Horse Shoe Bay! Warwick Long Bay, Jobson's Cove, Stonehole Bay, and Chaplin Bay are the neighboring beaches with pinker sands, less people, and some really stunning rock formations.

Want to know a few other hidden gems? Buy us a coffee and we will reveal all of the gorgeous spots from the pictures below!

One of the most fun things to do in Paraty is to visit a Cachacaria.

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #4: Go Jet Skiing

As an avid cruiser, jet skiing is one of my favorite activities. While most places in the Caribbean will rent out jet skis by the hour, in Bermuda they actually do jet ski tours. So rather than just riding around, you go on a tour of some of the coolest coastal spots on the island!

Jet skis can easily be found right on the pier of Kings Wharf where the cruise ships dock, making it a super accessible activity to do, and definitely one of the most fun things to do in Bermuda.

Jet skis are definitely not the cheapest excursion, but neither are most activities on this island, so it is definitely worth the splurge!

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #5: Charter a Boat

If there is one thing that we loved the most during our time in Bermuda, it was this!

Sailing around Bermuda is an incredible experience, and if you have a big group, then this is truly a must. Most cruise ships offer boat trips, and you can also find them right inside the port area. However, do not do these ones! They are short 1-2 hour cruises that are jam-packed with people, and run anywhere from $90-$120/person.

For that price you can actually charter a private boat for as many hours as you'd like! We did 5 hours, but definitely could have used a few more.

Catamaran, things to do in Bermuda on a cruise

Here are a couple of boat charters you can use:

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #6: Go Snorkeling

There is a ton of marine life in Bermuda, so snorkeling is definitely something that you'll want to add to your list of things to do in Bermuda.

You can bring your own snorkel gear and explore the coves of different beaches, you can rent equipment at most beaches, or you can sign up for a boat tour that includes snorkeling.

If you happen to do a charter cruise, then chances are they will offer you the gear to snorkel, so it's a two-in-one. However, if you are traveling with a small group, you can find some fun boat trips that include snorkeling. We still suggest doing this outside of the cruise line, as they are cheaper online, and the tours tend to be longer.

Bermuda has incredible waters for snorkeling.

Here are a few excursions we found that include snorkeling in Bermuda:

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #7: Visit Hamilton

Hamilton is one of the cities in Bermuda worth checking out, featuring  pastel-colored colonial buildings, museums, and high-end shops. The city is just an easy ferry ride away from Kings Wharf, and is a lovely place to spend some time in the evening.

Hamilton Bermuda, things to do in Bermuda on a cruise

Hamilton is one of the most vibrant towns in Bermuda.

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #8: Experience Harbour Nights

If you plan on visiting Bermuda on a cruise in the summertime, then visiting Hamilton is a must! Every Wednesday from mid April til early September Hamilton has their famous Harbour Nights.

Starting at 7 pm and going until 10 pm there is live music, dance performances, and parades along Front Street. There are also local shops with kiosks to get handmade crafts, jewelry, and souvenirs, as well as a variety of food stalls to try Bermudian food and drinks.

Harbour nights in Hamilton, things to do in Bermuda on a cruise

Harbour nights are full of music, dancing, and food.

This is definitely one of the top things to do in Bermuda, so don't miss out!

Ferries tend to fill up very quickly, and don't run so often. Make sure to get there early so that you get a spot! The ferries you can choose from are the 5:45, 7:00, or 8:00, and are a half hour to get to Hamilton.

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #9: Explore the Crystal Caves

While most of the top things to do in Bermuda have to do with the beaches, that's not all the island has to offer!

The Crystal Caves and Fantasy Caves are two stunning spots to experience, and tours to visit are at the same location. You can either visit one, or you can have a combo ticket to save a bit if you decide to visit both.

The caves are open from 9 am to 5 pm, but you must take a tour. The first tour is at 9:30 am, and the last tour is at 4:30 pm for either of the caves, and 4:00 pm is the last tour for the combination of visiting both caves.

Walk ins have very limited availability, so we highly suggest booking your tour in advance. You can do your reservation right on their website, or if you'd like transportation included, you can book a tour separately.

Crystal Caves, things to do in Bermuda on a cruise

The Crystal Caves are one of the top things to do in Bermuda other than the beaches.

Here are some tours that include the crystal caves in them:

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #10: Discover Hidden Caves

While the Crystal Caves and Fantasy Caves are the most famous caves on the island, Bermuda actually has an extensive cave system, with quite a few cool ones to visit around the island!

Head over to the Blue Hole Park and you will find an area with cliffs and caves to explore, completely free of charge. You can also check out Admiral's cave, which is where you'll find people walking through a passage to a window cave, as well as cliff jumping right next to it.

Finally, there is another incredible cave called Cathedral Cave. It is located on the property of a resort, but they let us in with no issues. It's the perfect spot for a cool dip, and is truly a unique spot for free of charge!

Cathedral Cave, things to do in Bermuda

Cathedral cave is a true hidden gem of Bermuda.

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #11: Book a Spa Appointment Inside a Cave

Right next to Cathedral Cave is another cave you need to see. But it's not a cave for swimming, or for touring. It actually has a full spa inside! Natura Cave Spa is seriously one of the most unique spas we have ever seen, and if we had more time (or knew about it beforehand) we definitely would have booked an appointment.

It's part of the resort Grotto Bay, which we also highly recommend staying there if you are traveling to Bermuda on your own. It has a beautiful pool area, restaurants, the Cathedral cave, its own private beach, and a full aqua park!

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #12: Wander the Streets of St Georges

Hamilton isn't the only city worth visiting in Bermuda! St George's is actually the oldest English settlement on the island, and has a ton of great things to see such as churches, fortresses, and streets of beautiful pastel-colored buildings.

St George's, things to do in Bermud on a cruise

St George's is the northernmost part of the island, but can easily be reached by ferry from King's Wharf in just 45 minutes for $5 each way.

There is a ferry right from King's Wharf to St George's.

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #13: Visit the Oldest Church in the Western Hemisphere

While you're in St George's, one of the top sites to check out is the St Peter's Church, which is the oldest standing Anglican church in Western Hemisphere! We heard from locals that you can also climb up the tower for some great views of the city, but unfortunately it was closed when we visited.

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #14: Check Out the Unfinished Church

Just up the road from St. Peter's Church is another church worth checking out, which we actually liked even more! The church is actually a set of ruins from a neo-Gothic stone church, which was partially built in the late 1800's and was never actually completed.

unfinished church, things to do in Bermuda

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #15: Explore the Fortresses

St George's has quite a few forts lined up along the coast, some of which are more of ruins, and some which are pretty we in tact.

Some of the ones that you can check out for free are Gate's Fort, Alexandra Battery, and Fort Albert. The biggest and most complete fort is Fort St. Catherine, which has a full museum, and is $7 to visit.

There are a bunch of small forts around St George's.

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #16: Stop at St. David's Lighthouse

Another fun find for us was St David's Lighthouse, a cute red and white lighthouse found on St. David's Island, just under St. George's. Unfortunately you can't climb up, but it does have some pretty views due to its high location on the island.

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #17: Tour the Naval Dockyard

Alright, let's head back south near King's Wharf! If you plan on visiting Bermuda on a cruise, chances are your final day will be a half one, which means it's perfect for exploring things that are a bit closer to the ship.

Cruise ships dock right in the Naval Dockyard, which is a site in itself! There are tours you can take of the Naval Dockyard, or you can simply wander around and enjoy the dockyard yourself.

King's Wharf has a lot of history, and is right next to the ship.

Here is a Segway tour of the Naval Dockyard in Bermuda:

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #18: Play at One of the World's Biggest Mini Golf Courses

If you're looking for something else fun to do for the family, or simply near the cruise dock, then you're in luck! There is a brand new mini golf course just steps away from the ship, and it is one of the biggest mini golf courses in the world!

With 18 challenging courses, this is a fun activity which is convenient and and great for all ages. It is open from 10 am to 10 pm, and they also offer glow-in-the-dark night time mini golf.

mini golf in Bermuda

Bermuda has one of the biggest mini golf courses in the world!

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #19: Play at the Pirate Ship and Aqua Park

Right outside the ship is a fun pirate ship to have a drink on, and we used to always go to jump off the plank into the refreshing waters around it.

Now they have expanded and actually have a full aqua park! My whole family went and had a great time having drinks and playing around there. I hurt my leg so didn't get to participate, but it definitely looked like a great activity for those wanting to do something nearby the ship. It is $30, and the pass is for the whole day.

While I personally prefer to experience more of nature, this is a good option for those who wake up late their last day in Bermuda and just want to have a bit of fun outside.

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #20: Have a Night Out at Snorkel Park

One of the things I always look forward to the most in Bermuda is the night life! Every time we would visit Bermuda on a cruise we would go to Snorkel Park, which is beach club right next to the ship.

Now it has grown so much, and there are massive parties at night, and a variety of activities to experience during the day.

We didn't get to go this last time, as there was an outrageous cover charge ($50) for a private party, but we definitely suggest checking out their schedule and seeing if you can make it to one of the parties at night.

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #21: Attend a Special Event

Bermuda has a ton of great events that it offers! I have been there during golf retreats, sailboat races, and cricket tournaments. They also have a huge Pride Festival in August, as well as their massive 4-day Carnival celebration every June.

There are parades, food, music, parties, and so much more! We suggest checking out the Bermuda event calendar, as there are a ton of great events to experience in Bermuda all year long.

How Do Tourists Get Around in Bermuda?

Bermuda is a small island, making it very easy to get around! You can find a variety of ways to get around such as local buses, taxis, ferries and rentals.

The Different Ways to Get Around Bermuda

Buses in bermuda.

Most places in Bermuda can be accessed by taking one of the public buses. Prices depend on the parish in which you are traveling, and rides are pretty affordable.

Taxis in Bermuda

Taxis in Bermuda are pretty much the same as taking a bus, in that the more people you have doesn't make a difference in the price. Drivers charge per head, and often cram as many people as possible into their vans. Often taxis will hover around hot spots and offer the same routes as buses, but try to get you to go with them to go faster.

The good thing is that you may get to leave faster, and if you have a big group you won't have to wait for the bus. You also might be able to bargain a bit for the price, and get it to a similar price as a bus would be. The downside is that they won't leave until they fill their van, which may mean you won't leave as soon as you would like.

Ferries in Bermuda

As far as public transportation goes, the ferry is definitely our favorite way to get around Bermuda. The ferries have similar prices to the buses, and connect King's Wharf, Hamilton, and St. George's, as well as Rockaway and Warwick. There are also stops in Watford Bridge, Cavello Bay, and Paget, across the four different ferries lines that are offered.

Below is the info for the ferry schedule this summer which we got from the official site:

Scooter Rentals in Bermuda

This is hands-down our favorite way to get around Bermuda! A scooter gives you the freedom to explore all that Bermuda has to offer, and is perfect for the adventurous should out there, or those that want to see it all while visiting Bermuda on a cruise.

We got our scooter for 3 days for $77. The more days you rent, the cheaper it is, and you can typically fit 2 people on one scooter.

scooter rental in Bermuda

Rental Cars in Bermuda

For a while it was actually illegal for tourists to rent cars in Bermuda! Now there is actually a company though that rents out tiny electric cars. This is definitely the most expensive option, starting at $130/day, typically for a 1-2 seater.

The plus side to having the car over a scooter though is that you have more room for your belongings, and are protected more in case the weather isn't favorable.

rental cars in Bermuda

Bermuda has small electric cars for rent.

Bike Rentals in Bermuda

Another fun way to get around for cheap is by renting a bike. It's super easy, as they are scattered around the island, and you can rent it straight from the app.

bike rental in Bermuda

Bikes are a super cheap and fun way to get around Bermuda.

What is the Cheapest Way to Get Around Bermuda?

The cheapest way to get around Bermuda definitely depends on how much you'd like to do! If you plan on staying near the port, or doing just 1 area per day, then the cheapest way will definitely be by taking the local buses.

If you plan on exploring a lot, then the scooter will be well worth it! We drove around the entire island, and only had to fill our tank once for $5, totaling just over $40 each to go everywhere in a 3 day span.

Are There Ubers in Bermuda?

Bermuda does not have Uber, nor does it have a ton of private taxis. If you want to get somewhere fast, then you may have to share your ride with other people, or wait for the taxi to fill up before getting from one destination to the next.

If you do have a specific ride in mind (for example to or from your hotel), you can ask a local to call and reserve a taxi for you.

Where to Stay in Bermuda If You Are Not Cruising

If you are visiting Bermuda on a cruise, you won't have to worry about your accommodation. However, if you plan to visit Bermuda by plane, then you'll need to choose a nice place to stay.

As far as location goes, we would suggest either staying in Hamilton or St. George's. These are the most well-connected, and also have plenty of activities, as well as dining options.

If you plan on moving around by scooter or rental car, then we would suggest staying at one of the resorts that are in the center of the island. We particularly loved the look of Grotto Bay , as it had a ton of amenities, and was nearby a lot of great attractions!

Local Food & Drink

One of our favorite parts of traveling is to experience the local flavors of where we go! Bermuda happens to be a very expensive island though, so if you are visiting Bermuda on a cruise, we would suggest spending most of your meals on the ship.

That being said, we do suggest saving some room for the street food on front street in Hamilton during their harbor nights!

What Food is Popular in Bermuda?

Bermuda's cuisine has influence from both the UK, and the Caribbean. Fish is plentiful, and codfish is one of the most common which is incorporated into their diet. As far as drinks go, rum is the most prominent, and the native brand is Goslings, which you'll find all over the shops, bars, and restaurants.

Here are a few of the foods that are the most popular in Bermuda:

  • Fish & Chips: this British classic brought its way over to the island
  • Fish Sandwich: a go-to for locals on their lunch break
  • Jerk Chicken: slow-cooked with a slightly spicy sauce
  • Fish Chowder: the national dish, which uses Goslings rum and spicy peppers poured over it
  • Codfish breakfast: boiled codfish topped with a tomato and onion sauce, and seared with boiled potatoes, hard boiled eggs, avocado, and a banana on the side
  • Mussel Pie:  a pie made with steamed mussels, often times with curry
  • Fish Cakes:  patty of salted codfish, potatoes, and onion, which is fried

What is the Drink of Choice in Bermuda?

The drink of choice in Bermuda is certainly rum! Goslings is the most popular brand that you will find, and can easily be purchased in shops, or found in all bars and restaurants. There are two popular drinks in Bermuda that are a must-try: the Rum Swizzle, and the Dark N' Stormy:

  • Rum Swizzle:  the national drink featuring Goslings rum, pineapple juice, orange juice, lemon, Bermuda falernum, and bitters
  • Dark N' Stormy:  Goslings rum and ginger beer

How Safe is Bermuda for Tourists?

Bermuda is a very safe island! While the Caribbean has many more dodgy areas, you'll have nothing to worry about on the island of Bermuda. We've walked around at night, and explored all over before the sun came up, and always felt very safe.

If you happen to visit the beaches for sunrise, you'll actually find that this is when all of the locals are out enjoying the places before the sun becomes intense, and before all of the tourists take over.

We went to Horseshoe Bay for sunrise, and it was very busy with local Bermudians. Everyone was so friendly, and being a small island, everyone is always smiling at one another, and genuinely in a good mood. The vibe in Bermuda is so great, and unlike many Caribbean islands, there is no haggling or harassment, making it so pleasant visiting Bermuda as a tourist.

Other Things to Know About Visiting Bermuda on a Cruise

Now that you know almost everything you need to know about visiting Bermuda on a cruise (or in general), here are a few other things to keep in mind while visiting.

Weather in Bermuda

Bermuda has tropical climate, and is pretty similar to the Caribbean. However, unlike the Caribbean islands, temperatures can drop in Bermuda in the winter time. We've heard from locals that temperatures in December and January can drop down to the sixties, or sometimes even as low as the fifties!

The summers are extremely hot and humid, and the sun is very strong in Bermuda. Overall, Bermuda has much warmer weather than most places in the US year-round, and it makes a great tropical escape.

best months to visit Bermuda

Bermuda is a tropical island with a lot of sunshine.

What Month is Bermuda Best to Visit?

The best time to visit Bermuda is either a little before the summer, or after, when the weather is milder, and it is less crowded. After speaking with locals, we've gathered that the best months to visit Bermuda are in April or May, or in November.

From June to August the weather is extremely hot, and this is when the island becomes the most crowded, while August to October is hurricane season. March is spring break for Americans, which is when you'll see the most children, and the months of March, July, and August are when cruises are the most expensive.

If you'd like to escape the crowds, and have the most pleasant temperatures, then the spring and late fall are the most ideal for visiting Bermuda. If you'd like to experience Harbour nights, then definitely make sure you visit between the months of May to August, and if you'd like to experience Bermuda's carnival, June will be the best month to visit.

How Do You Pack for Bermuda?

If you plan on visiting Bermuda on a cruise, here are some of the things we suggest bringing with you:

  • Reusable Water Bottle (we use this water bottle from Cafago because it holds the temperature)
  • Flip Flops (we personally always get Havaiana flip flops , as they are comfy and long lasting)
  • Zippered Bag or Backpack - take a look at these backpacks for travelers!
  • Power Bank (we use Anker power banks , as they are super long lasting and sturdy)
  • Bathing Suit
  • Light, casual clothing for the evening
  • Drone (We use the Mavic Mini Pro 3 because it's super light and doesn't sacrifice quality)
  • Action Camera (we use the Insta 360 X3 because it's small & waterproof)
  • Waterproof Phone Pouch (we use the Cafago Waterproof Phone Pouch)
  • Dry Bag (for water activities)
  • License (if you'd like to rent a scooter, and as mandatory ID for when you get off the ship)

Here are a few things you should also bring for your cruise vacation:

  • White outfit (most cruise lines have a white night)
  • Evening wear (for the dining room)
  • Heels or nice shoes (for the evenings)

Here are a few items you'll want to bring if you are not visiting Bermuda on a cruise, and are flying there:

  • Travel Adapter (we use Tessan travel adapters as they are affordable and reliable)
  • Towel (if you are cruising towels are provided on the ship)

Bermuda Transportation Guide for Cruise Visitors

Bermuda offers several forms of transportation to its visitors. Car rentals, however, is not one of them.

Bermuda, a British Overseas Territory in the Atlantic Ocean, is about 1,100 miles northeast of Miami.

The island has 20.6 square miles of land and 130 miles of public paved roads. More than 600,000 people tourists come to Bermuda each year, including traffic from cruise lines.

Because of Bermuda’s small size and population, tourists are not permitted to rent cars, as it would bring the traffic to a standstill. Only residents of Bermuda can drive cars.

Luckily, there are plenty of other options for getting around. Here are some of the best ways to get around Bermuda:

Bermuda Ferries

Bermuda’s ferry system offers a scenic way to get around the island. The most active ferry goes between Hamilton and Royal Navy Dockyard. It is mostly used by cruise visitors whose ships dock at the Dockyard. The ride takes 15 to 20 minutes and costs $5 each way.

Ferries depart from each port almost hourly. A complete ferry schedule is available on the Bermuda Department of Marine and Port Services website.

Visitors staying in Bermuda for multiple days can purchase an Island Transportation Pass. It allows them one, three or seven days of unlimited use on both the ferries and the bus system.

A seven-day pass is $62 for adults and $31 for childen at the time of this writing. Prices subject to change.

Bermuda Public Buses

Bermuda has a bus system with 11 bus lines. The buses reach almost every area of the island, which is long, thin and curly.

The bus system divides the island into 14 zones. Bus stops headed toward Hamilton, such as the ones from Royal Navy Dockyard, have poles with a pink top. Bus stops headed out of Hamilton have a blue top.

Tourists are advised not to plan their travel in the early mornings and evenings, as the buses will be busy with locals.

The adult fare for three zones is $3.50. It’s $5 for all 14 zones. Exact change in coins is required for bus transportation.

Passes for one, two, three, four or seven consecutive days are available for unlimited, all zones travel on buses and ferries. A pass is a good option for anyone who plans to make multiple trips around the island on the same day.

Scooters are one of the most popular ways for tourists to get around Bermuda. On a scooter, tourists can explore the island’s scenic views and streets at their leisure.

The age requirement for driving a scooter is 18 years. Drivers must wear a helmet and must drive on the left hand side of the road.

The speed limit on the roads is usually set at around 20 miles per hour.

Most scooter rental agencies provide a delivery and pick up service at hotels. Here are a few of the most well-known places to rent a scooter:

Oleander Cycles Limited Two Locations: 15 Gorham Road Pembroke Parish (Central) Tel: 441 295 0919

8 Middle Road Southampton Parish (West End) Tel: 441 234 0629 https://www.oleandercycles.bm/

Wheels Cycles Coco Reef Bermuda 3 Stonington Circle Paget Parish (Central) Tel: 441 292 2245 https://www.oleandercycles.bm/

Note that scooter rentals are available at the Royal Navy Dockyard for cruise visitors. But during our visit there, we mostly saw people taking excursion buses. There were very few active scooters.

Here's when you need (and don't need) a passport to cruise.

It's the type of sailing – closed-loop or open-loop – that largely determines whether or not you need a passport to cruise.

Do You Need a Passport for a Cruise?

Passports on a map showing cruise lanes.

A passport isn't always required for cruising.

To determine whether or not you need a passport to cruise, you first need to figure out if the itinerary is closed-loop or open-loop (also known as open-jaw).

Closed-loop cruise: A closed-loop cruise typically doesn't require a passport since it begins and ends in the same U.S. port (though there are some exceptions to this rule).

Example: Royal Caribbean International 's seven-night Western Caribbean & Perfect Day cruise stops in several countries – the Bahamas, Jamaica, Haiti and Grand Cayman – but the itinerary is considered closed-loop because it starts and ends in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Open-loop cruise: An open-loop cruise begins in one U.S. port and ends in a different U.S. port.

Example: Carnival Cruise Line 's 16-day Panama Canal from Seattle itinerary is not considered closed-loop because it departs from Seattle and completes its journey in New Orleans.

All of the above regulations have been determined by the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative: a plan by the departments of State and Homeland Security that determines which documents are acceptable for proving identity and citizenship when entering the United States.

Where to cruise without a passport

There are several destinations where you can cruise without a passport on a closed-loop sailing. They include the following:

  • The Bahamas

When looking at cruises to these locations, be mindful of the home ports. The Bahamas, Mexico, Bermuda, the Caribbean and Canada are all foreign ports, which means they only qualify for the passport exception if they are a stop along your cruise itinerary . If the cruise originates in any of these countries, it is likely you will need a passport.

Since Alaska, Hawaii and New England are all U.S. destinations, any closed-loop routes departing from these locations will not require a passport. However, keep in mind that it can be hard to find closed-loop cruises originating in Hawaii or Alaska.

To find closed-loop itineraries for a Hawaiian voyage or Alaskan cruise , try searching for sailings departing from major cities on the West Coast, like Seattle or Los Angeles . By contrast, quite a few closed-loop cruises leave from New England ports, but they are often marketed as Canadian cruises.

When you need a passport for closed-loop cruises

Some cruise itineraries include foreign ports that require a passport for disembarkation. This is most commonly an issue for travelers on a closed-loop Caribbean cruise. Barbados , Guadeloupe , Haiti, Martinique , St. Barts , and Trinidad and Tobago all require U.S. citizens to present a valid passport to disembark and enter the country, despite WHTI regulations not requiring a passport for these destinations. Labadee, Royal Caribbean's private island , is an exception and does not require a passport despite its location in Haiti.

If your itinerary includes a country requiring a U.S. passport, your cruise line will require you to have the passport at check-in. Note that your passport must not expire within six months of your arrival in a foreign country or else it won't be considered valid for international travel.

Read: The Easiest Way to Renew Your Passport

Acceptable forms of ID

All travelers – U.S. citizens and foreign nationals alike – must present documents that show identity and citizenship when entering the United States. A U.S. passport can show both. If you don't have one or don't want to bring one, be aware that you may need to present more than one document.

U.S. citizens 16 and older

If you're a U.S. citizen age 16 or older sailing on a closed-loop cruise without your passport, you will need a government-issued photo ID like a driver's license. In addition, you must present a document that proves your U.S. citizenship. These include:

  • Passport card
  • State-issued enhanced driver's license (EDL)
  • Government-issued birth certificate
  • Trusted Traveler Program card (NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST)
  • American Indian Card (Form I-872) or Enhanced Tribal ID Card

The Trusted Traveler Programs are risk-based programs to facilitate the entry of travelers who have been vetted and preapproved. Most of these programs will provide you with a machine-readable card that allows you to pass through border checkpoints quickly. Keep in mind, some of these IDs are only available to travelers 16 and older.

Read: TSA Precheck vs. Global Entry

U.S. citizens younger than 16

U.S. citizens younger than 16 are only required to present proof of citizenship, such as one of the following documents:

  • Original, notarized or certified copy of their government-issued birth certificate
  • Consular Report of Birth Abroad issued by U.S. Department of State
  • Certificate of Naturalization issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services

Read: How to Get a Passport for Kids

Non-U.S. citizens

If you are a lawful permanent resident (or LPR) of the United States, you are required to present a permanent resident card or other valid evidence of permanent residence status.

Non-U.S. citizens, with the exception of Canadians and Mexicans, are not subject to passport exceptions, so a valid passport will need to be provided. Canadian citizens can present a valid passport, Enhanced Driver's License or Trusted Traveler Program card. Mexican citizens must present a passport with a visa or a Border Crossing Card.

Unacceptable forms of ID

While most common forms of identification are accepted, there are a few exceptions. U.S. military identification cards and U.S. Merchant Mariner documents are valid forms of identification, but only when traveling on official orders or in conjunction with official maritime business, so it is unlikely they will be accepted when traveling on a cruise.

Here are some other documents that will not be accepted as proof of citizenship:

  • Voter registration cards
  • Social Security cards
  • Baptismal papers
  • Hospital certificates of birth (for anyone older than a newborn)

It is important to note that many of the permitted forms of identification, such as a passport card or EDL, are only accepted at land and sea border crossings. Unforeseen circumstances, such as a medical air evacuation, may cause you to return to the U.S. by air travel. In this case, these documents won't be accepted when you try to reenter at the border crossing.

To avoid extra delays in your return to the U.S. following unforeseen travel complications, the Department of State recommends that everyone taking a cruise from the United States carry a valid passport book in case of emergency.

How Long Does It Take to Get to Bermuda by Cruise Ship?

By Robert Palmer

Located some 650 miles off the coast of North Carolina, Bermuda is an incredibly popular cruise destination for those looking for a unique tropical experience. But how long does it take to get there by cruise ship?

The answer depends on the type of cruise you are taking and the distance between your port of embarkation and Bermuda. Cruises that originate in ports along the Eastern Seaboard of the United States typically take anywhere from two to five days to reach Bermuda. Longer cruises that depart from points further away such as Florida or even Europe can take up to seven days or more to arrive in Bermuda.

Cruise ships that are headed to Bermuda usually make multiple stops along the way, allowing passengers time to explore other places before arriving at their final destination. Depending on the route taken, ports of call can include San Juan, Puerto Rico; Charlotte Amalie in St Thomas; Philipsburg in St Maarten; and Nassau in The Bahamas. These stops offer passengers an opportunity to experience different cultures, enjoy local attractions and shop duty-free items before arriving in beautiful Bermuda.

The journey from your departure point to Bermuda is often just as enjoyable as your time spent on this island paradise. Onboard activities such as games, live music performances and dance parties keep passengers entertained throughout their voyage while dining options range from casual buffet-style meals to gourmet specialty restaurants. Many ships also offer spa treatments, swimming pools and fitness centers so you can relax or stay active while cruising through the Caribbean Sea.

No matter which route you choose or how many days it takes you to get there, a cruise ship journey to Bermuda is sure to be a memorable one! With its lush landscape and friendly locals, this island nation offers something for everyone – from beach lovers and nature enthusiasts to history buffs and adventure seekers alike. Dear All, Good Day,

I cannot find an answer on the internet or on the official website. Hoping someone can give me an answer here or at least and insight.

I used this site- https://www.gov.bm/cruise-travel-authorisation. I believe this is the official government site.

I have two questions.

1. My cruise goes from NYC (Sun) to Norfolk Virginia (Mon); Sea day (Tues) and then arrival at Bermuda (Wed. 8 a,m,) on the 4th day ( if you count departing from NYC at 4pm as one day).

On the website mentioned, it has two items- 1. for cruise voyage is the first port or call

2. One wherein Bermuda is not the first port of call or ship takes longer than 4 days to arrive to Bermuda from embarkation port.

I presume that my cruise falls under the purview of the second one even though the first port of call is not a foreign port. Am I correct?

My concern is this- for #2, it mentions " COVID-19 NAAT or supervised antigen test up to 2 days before disembarking in Bermuda "

I cannot find any reference to the supervised antigen test- is the Emed video-proctored test an accepted " supervised " antigen test? I don't want to run afoul with Bermuda law and not be able to disembark.

Reason I ask is that I have to get a test at the earliest while in Norfolk to comply with the 2 day rule before arriving in Bermuda.

Any opinion, insights, weblinks you can give is much much highly appreciated! Many thanks in advance!

The NCL website indicates:

"Where Bermuda is not the first port of call, or if the ship takes longer than 4 days to arrive in Bermuda, all guests, regardless of vaccination status, will be required to take an additional antigen or PCR test onboard no more than 2 days prior to disembarking in Bermuda. This test will be paid for and administered by our onboard medical team."

https://www.ncl.com/ca/en/travel-requirements-by-country#bermuda

If NCL is not your cruise line, I suggest you follow my example and simply google your inquiry on your cruise website.

Havlarj, THANK YOU VERY MUCH for that link. I honestly do not know how I missed that when I went to their site.😕 I even joined the NCL Joy Facebook just to ask this question. 😒 Could not find anything on the internet. At least not with the search words I used on google.

I was on the phone with them about 4 days ago and asked this question. They said that they have onboard testing and (to quote) " as far as I recall, it cost $150 " Which is why I wanted to do the emed testing by myself.

I bookmarked the page already. 😄

travel to bermuda via cruise ship

Anyway, the link havlarj gave me showed that NCL will do the test on board the ship at no expense to the client. But this is in opposite of what the rep told me when I was on the phone with them. For now I will stick to what the NCL site said but continue to have a plan B. Just in case.

I'm not at all surprised that this information isn't included. WITHOUT a properly a documented pre-departure BERMUDA TRAVEL AUTHORISATION, *** YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO BOARD YOUR SHIP *** at your US departure port... WITHOUT properly administered and documented Covid testing done aboard your ship en route to Bermuda, *** YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO DISEMBARK *** once arrived in Bermuda. So the question of whether you will be allowed to disembark in Bermuda and walk around the Royal Naval Dockyard complex becomes moot

The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship

T hinking of booking a cruise with Norwegian Cruise Line ? You have a lot of choices. The Miami-based line operates vessels in almost every corner of the world, with a wide range of itineraries in many destinations.

You'll find Norwegian ships everywhere from the Caribbean and the Bahamas to Europe, Asia and Australia. The line is also a big player in Hawaii.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter.

In addition, Norwegian is particularly known for cruises to Bermuda out of Boston and New York City, and it offers Canada and New England cruises regularly. It also operates some Panama Canal sailings and trips from the West Coast of the U.S. to the Mexican Riviera.

In North America, Norwegian ships sail from a relatively wide range of home ports, including Baltimore; Boston; New York City; Miami and Tampa; Galveston, Texas; San Juan, Puerto Rico; New Orleans; San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco; Seattle; Honolulu; Vancouver, British Columbia; Quebec City and Quebec in Canada; and Seward, Alaska.

Here is a look at the best destinations you can visit on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship.

Related: The ultimate guide to Norwegian Cruise Line

Some of Norwegian's most exciting itineraries are in Europe, where the line is a significant player. It offers a wide range of itineraries in the Mediterranean and across northern Europe.

Norwegian will typically deploy around half of its 19 ships to the continent from spring to fall, making Europe its biggest focus for more than half the year. Norwegian also sometimes offers Europe cruises in the winter — albeit typically with just one ship.

Norwegian's Mediterranean sailings provide the chance to see such iconic destinations as Barcelona in Spain; and Florence, Rome and Naples in Italy in a single cruise. Or, you can sign up for a Mediterranean cruise that focuses on the Greek Islands.

In northern Europe, Norwegian will take you to such famed Baltic cities as Stockholm; Tallinn, Estonia; and Helsinki in a single sailing.

In past years, such Baltic trips have also included a multiday call at St. Petersburg, Russia — traditionally the highlight of any Baltic sailings. However, like all major cruise lines, Norwegian pulled St. Petersburg from Baltic itineraries in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

As of the publishing of this guide, Norwegian had opened bookings for all of its Baltic sailing through late 2025, and St. Petersburg remains off the schedule for all of them. The line hasn't said when it might return to St. Petersburg.

For those looking to explore northern Europe, Norwegian also offers itineraries that zero in on Iceland, Ireland and the United Kingdom.

Norwegian's Europe voyages range widely in length from just four nights to a whopping 19 nights (for a repositioning cruise itinerary that begins in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and ends in the European city of Lisbon).

Among the longest sailings that Norwegian offers that focus solely on European stops is a one-way trips between Reykjavik, Iceland, and Oslo, Norway, that includes a wide range of stops in Greenland, Iceland, Denmark's Faroe Islands and Norway.

In Northern Europe, Norwegian ships mostly sail out of Amsterdam, Stockholm, Copenhagen, England's Southampton and Reykjavík in Iceland.

In the Mediterranean, the line's hubs are Barcelona; Civitavecchia (the port for Rome) and Trieste (near Venice) in Italy; Piraeus (the port for Athens) in Greece; and Istanbul.

Norwegian isn't the biggest player in Alaska cruises. The giants of cruising to Alaska are Princess Cruises and Holland America , two brands that are sister lines to each other and control a large percentage of the market.

Still, Norwegian typically sends three to five vessels to Alaska every summer, and its big, activity-filled ships are a popular pick with families looking to visit the destination.

The Alaska cruise season is a short one, lasting roughly from April to late October.

For 2024, Norwegian plans to deploy four ships to the Alaska market for the full season:

  • Norwegian Encore : Norwegian's biggest vessel will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round trip out of Seattle. It will call at the Alaska towns of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan, plus Victoria, British Columbia. It will also visit Alaska's Glacier Bay National Park for glacier viewing.
  • Norwegian Sun: This ship will operate a mix of nine- to 10-night sailings to Alaska out of Seattle. The list of port calls varies based on the length of the trips.
  • Norwegian Bliss : The 3,958-passenger vessel will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round trip out of Seattle. On most sailings, it will call at Sitka, Juneau, Ketchikan and Icy Strait Point in Alaska, plus Victoria, British Columbia. It will also visit Alaska's Endicott Arm for glacier viewing. Some sailings at the start and end of the season substitute a visit to Skagway and Glacier Bay National Park for the stops in Sitka and Icy Strait Point, and drop the visit to Endicott Arm.
  • Norwegian Jewel. The 2,330-passenger ship will operate one-way voyages to Alaska between Vancouver, British Columbia, and Seward, Alaska. The trips typically include stops in Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan, plus a visit to either Glacier Bay National Park or Icy Strait Point.

In recent years, the 1,972-passenger Norwegian Spirit also has spent its summers sailing in Alaska, but most of its Alaska voyages for 2024 were canceled as a result of the vessel being chartered to another company (Norwegian still is marketing two unusual one-way voyages to Alaska on Norwegian Spirit that will take place at the start of the 2024 season — the first a 16-night trip to Alaska that starts in Honolulu on April 22 and ends in Vancouver; the second an 18-night trip that starts May 8 in Vancouver and ends in Tokyo).

The appeal of the one-way sailings on Norwegian Jewel is that they can be combined with Norwegian-organized land tours of Alaska lasting from three to six days to create 10- to 13-night "cruisetours."

The land tour portion of such trips brings visits to such well-known interior Alaska locations as Denali National Park and the town of Fairbanks.

The Caribbean and the Bahamas

The Caribbean and the Bahamas have always been a big area of operations for Norwegian. In fact, for a long time, the regions were so much the focus that the line included "Caribbean" in its name. Up until 1987, Norwegian was known as Norwegian Caribbean Line.

These days, Norwegian usually keeps just two of its 19 vessels in the Caribbean and the Bahamas year-round (in recent years, the year-round ships have been Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Escape, both sailing to the Caribbean and the Bahamas from Florida ports). However, it really ramps things up in the region in the winter, when it deploys a large portion of its ships to the Caribbean and the Bahamas.

Norwegian currently has 15 of its 19 ships scheduled to sail to the Caribbean and the Bahamas for at least part of 2024 — including its newest and most advanced ship, the 3,195-passenger Norwegian Viva.

Related: I've sailed on nearly every Norwegian ship. Here are my first impressions of Norwegian Prima

Norwegian offers a broad range of Caribbean and Bahamas itineraries from more than half a dozen home ports. If you're looking for something short, the line has you covered in the form of lots of quick, three- and four-night trips from Miami to the Bahamas.

It also offers an abundance of seven-night sailings to Caribbean and Bahamian ports, as well as a handful of longer trips in the region that range from nine to 14 nights.

At the core of the line's Caribbean and Bahamas program are its seven-night sailings, which break down into three broad categories:

  • Eastern Caribbean voyages
  • Western Caribbean voyages
  • Southern Caribbean voyages

A typical seven-night Norwegian sailing to the Eastern Caribbean includes stops in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; Tortola, British Virgin Islands; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; and Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian's private island in the Bahamas.

Norwegian's seven Western Caribbean voyages will typically include a visit to Roatan, Honduras; Harvest Caye, Belize; and Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico.

The line's Southern Caribbean itineraries will often bring visits to Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, St. Lucia and St. Kitts. They typically begin and end in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

When sailing to the Caribbean, Norwegian ships generally sail out of Miami, Port Canaveral and Tampa in Florida; and San Juan, Puerto Rico. The line also offers Caribbean sailings out of Baltimore, Galveston, New Orleans, New York City and, occasionally, Panama City, Panama, and La Romana, Dominican Republic.

Norwegian is the undisputed leader in Hawaii cruises. Most cruise lines that offer sailings to Hawaii only offer a limited number of such trips during a few months each year. Norwegian, by contrast, offers sailings around the Hawaiian Islands out of Honolulu every week of the year — the only cruise line in the world to do so.

Norwegian's Hawaii voyages are also more intensely focused on Hawaii than the Hawaii trips offered by most other lines. This is because Norwegian offers its Hawaii cruises on one of the only cruise ships in the world that meets the regulatory requirements allowing it to spend all its time in the destination.

Norwegian's Hawaii trips take place on Norwegian's 2,150-passenger Pride of America, which has the rare distinction of being both U.S.-flagged and U.S.-crewed. By law, only such a vessel can cruise full-time in Hawaii without regularly traveling long distances to foreign ports.

An iconic presence in Hawaii, Pride of America has been permanently dedicated to the archipelago since its debut in 2005. It offers a repeating seven-night itinerary that begins each Saturday in Honolulu and brings the chance to visit four different Hawaiian islands on a single seven-night trip.

Beginning and ending on the island of Oahu, the itinerary includes two days each on the islands of Maui, Kauai and Hawaii. The two-day visit to Maui involves an overnight stay at the port of Kahului.

The two-day visit to Kauai involves an overnight stay at the port of Nawiliwili. The two-day visit to Hawaii is split between a call at Hilo and a call at Kona.

Related: The 8 classes of Norwegian ships, explained

Norwegian usually deploys two ships on Bermuda runs every year — one out of New York City and one out of Boston.

In both cases, the sailings offered are mostly seven nights in length and include a two-night stay in Bermuda.

For 2024, Norwegian will devote one of its biggest ships, the 3,782-passenger Norwegian Joy, to Bermuda. It will run out of New York. The line's 2,344-passenger Norwegian Gem will sail to Bermuda out of Boston.

In addition, the line's 3,903-passenger Norwegian Getaway will operate a handful of sailings to Bermuda out of New York during the early part of 2024 that include stops in the Caribbean (something that is relatively rare), and the 3,903-passenger Norwegian Breakaway will operate a few sailings to Bermuda out of New York toward the end of 2024.

The line's relatively new Norwegian Prima will operate a single Bermuda sailing out of New York at the end of 2024.

While most of Norwegian's Bermuda sailings are seven nights in length, the line also sometimes offers a few shorter four- and five-night Bermuda sailings and, occasionally, a longer, nine-night Bermuda sailing.

Note that the shorter Bermuda sailings can offer very little time in the country, sometimes as few as nine hours.

Bottom line

Ten of the best small-ship cruises

Not a fan of mega-ships our cruise expert has picked the best boutique sailings to keep things exclusive and adventurous.

Nassau, Bahamas

T here’s something special about small-ship cruising. You’ll feel a deeper connection to the sea, and there’s a certain pleasure from being docked in chic little ports among the superyachts or anchored in a remote bay far from the crowds. Of course, there won’t be Broadway shows and a choice of restaurants, but simplicity is all part of the appeal. Here are ten of the best small-ship cruises for this year and next.

1. Authentic Caribbean

Le Ponant sailing yacht

Explore some of the tiniest islands in the Caribbean on Ponant’s smallest ship: the swish, recently refurbished sailing yacht Le Ponant, which carries just 32 passengers. Sail from Marigot on St Martin to Prickly Pear Cays on Anguilla, St Barts, Nevis, Falmouth Bay on Antigua, Barbuda and the chic Îles des Saintes in Guadeloupe — in other words some of the most seductive islands in the region. On board you can expect the fine dining and service that comes from the ship’s partnership with Relais & Châteaux. Details Seven nights’ all-inclusive from £5,550pp, including excursions, departing on March 8, 2025 (uk.ponant.com). Fly to St Maarten and back from Guadeloupe

2. Croatia under sail

Kairos

Explore Croatia in detail on the classic schooner Kairos, which sails out of medieval Trogir to Vis, Hvar and Korcula, as well as lesser-known islands and anchorages, depending on wind speed and direction. With just 16 passengers and seven crew on board, this is small-ship luxury at its best — and you don’t have to help to sail the boat unless you want to do so. When you’re at anchor, jump straight into the warm Adriatic. Evenings are spent either in lively towns or anchored in remote bays. Details Seven nights’ full board from £3,025pp, departing on August 10 (venturesailholidays.com). Fly to Split

3. Butlers in the Bahamas

The Bahamas

This 12-night cruise zigzags from New York to Bermuda for an overnight stay, through the Bahamian islands of San Salvador, Exuma and Honeymoon Harbour on tiny Gun Cay, then on to Miami before ending back in Nassau. Expect luxury all the way, with a butler service, an open bar and helicopter trips, plus a submarine and water toys to play on when the ship’s marina platform is down, which is often. Scenic Eclipse carries just 228 passengers, with the vibe of a swish private yacht in its glossy lounges and smart, high-ceilinged cabins. Details Twelve nights’ all-inclusive from £6,914pp, including flights, private transfers, tips, wi-fi and excursions, departing on October 12 (scenic.co.uk)

4. turkey as you please.

Salamander

Muster a group of 12 and you can charter a gulet for a blissful week exploring the Turquoise Coast of Turkey. Sailing from Bodrum, you’ll travel on the gleaming wooden Salamander, which comes with a crew of four, including a chef. Visit pretty fishing villages and drop anchor in pine-scented bays surrounded by green mountains for swimming off the boat, as well as playing on the water toys. On board are six en suite cabins and plenty of lounging space on deck, where you’ll also have meals. Details Seven nights’ full board (excluding two dinners) from £22,870 for 12, including transfers and house wine, departing on June 24 (salamandervoyages.com). Fly to Bodrum

5. New year in the Seychelles

Praslin

Spend more than a week over the new year pottering around the dreamy Seychelles on Emerald Cruises’ sleek, 100-passenger Azzurra, visiting Praslin; rugged Curieuse, home to Aldabra giant tortoises; La Digue, location of the much-photographed Anse Source d’Argent beach; and Aride Island Nature Reserve, a breeding site for seabirds. You can snorkel and paddleboard off the back of the ship, which has a distinct superyacht feel thanks to an infinity pool and lovely alfresco dining area. Details Seven nights’ all-inclusive from £5,445pp, including flights, tips, wi-fi and some activities, departing on December 29 ( emeraldcruises.co.uk )

• Ten river cruises for adventurous travellers

6. Amazon adventure

A jaguar in the Amazon rainforest

Trace the northeast coastline of South America on a 19-night expedition on Swan Hellenic’s smart SH Vega, which carries 158 passengers. You’ll start in Barbados and head to Trinidad, but this is no ordinary Caribbean cruise — the next stop is Georgetown in Guyana, then it’s the volcanic Salvation Islands, a former penal colony off the coast of French Guiana now returned to nature. From the Brazilian town of Iquiqui you’ll head into the Amazon rainforest in search of jaguars and pink river dolphins. While in Brazil there’s also a chance to see the rippling white sand dunes ofLençois Maranhenses National Park and the Unesco world heritage town of Olinda before arriving in colourful Bahia. Details Nineteen nights’ all-inclusive from £6,980pp including wi-fi, taxes, excursions and a night in Barbados, departing on October 12, 2025 (swanhellenic.com). Fly to Barbados

7. Maritime history on east-coast US

Sag Harbor

Sail from Boston to New York City on American Cruise Lines’ 90-passenger American Independence, built for the shallow inlets and rivers of the US east coast. You’ll learn about the history of Boston and call at arty, boho coastal towns packed with maritime history. Plymouth was the first pilgrim settlement, while yachtie Newport is known for its opulent seaside estates and lobster. Old Saybrook, settled in 1635, is one of oldest towns in Connecticut, while Sag Harbor is famed for its art galleries and endless beaches. Details Seven nights’ all-inclusive from £5,999pp, including flights, excursions and a night in a hotel pre-cruise, departing on September 29 (fredholidays.co.uk)

8. Tall ship Atlantic crossing

Star Flyer

Crossing the Atlantic under sail is special; you’ll have days to commune with the ocean, leaving the stresses of everyday life behind. Join the 170-passenger tall ship Star Flyer in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria — the city from which Columbus set sail in 1492. There’s a stop at the Canary island of La Gomera, then 13 days at sea as you head west to the Tropics, making landfall at St Maarten. On board you can help the crew with the sails, splash around in the pool, have a Thai massage and — on this sailing, which has a yoga theme — practise your sun salutations. Details Fifteen nights’ full board from £2,015pp, departing on November 15 (starclippers.co.uk). Fly to Gran Canaria and back from St Maarten

9. Tempting Tahiti

Moorea

Discover Tahiti in all its high-definition beauty on the small ship Star Breeze, which carries 312 and is based in Papeete. You’ll visit dreamy islands including Bora Bora, Huahine, Moorea and Raiatea on a seven-night meander through French Polynesia, with swimming in turquoise lagoons, rainforest hikes and visits to vanilla plantations and ancient sacred sites on the agenda. One night there’s a special dinner on a private island, followed by a fire-dancing display under the stars. Details Seven nights’ all-inclusive from £6,200pp, including flights and a night in a hotel pre-cruise, departing on October 17 (windstarcruises.com; book by June 30)

10. Wellness in the Cyclades

Milos

Potter round the lesser-visited Greek islands of the Cyclades on the 50-passenger Elysium, a tiny ship that can anchor in smaller harbours, away from the mainstream cruise ships. There’s an emphasis on healthy Greek food for meals onboard, and you can choose the most inviting taverna in town for either lunch or dinner each day. A wellness coach travels on every cruise to help balance mind and body, with yoga, meditation and hiking on offer. On a seven-night Divine Cyclades cruise you’ll sail from Athens and visit islands including Delos, Naxos, Milos, Serifos and Kythnos, as well as big-hitters such as Santorini and Ios. Details Seven nights’ half-board from £2,530pp, departing on September 7 (elixir.cruises). Fly to Athens
