SUBIC TRAVEL GUIDE with Budget Itinerary

SUBIC TRAVEL GUIDE with Budget Itinerary

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

When I talked to a number of people and asked them about Subic, what I found out was quite astonishing. Many of them thought that Subic and Clark are one and the same. So just so we’re clear, Subic and Clark are two different areas. I think the confusion stems from the fact that both have “freeport zones”. Clark Freeport Zone (CFZ) is a former US air force base (Clark Air Base), while the Subic Bay Freeport Zone (SBFZ) is a former US naval base (Subic Bay Naval Base). Both have been converted to massive business and recreation centers.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

UNDERSTANDING SUBIC

Subic is a town in the province of Zambales. Located along Subic Bay, the municipality is known for maritime industry and logistics and warehousing services. The Subic Bay Freeport Zone (SBFZ) covers the municipality of Subic and city of Olongapo in Zambales and the municipalities of Morong and Hermosa in Bataan. The conversion of the former U.S. Navy Base to an economic zone bolstered by the area’s commercial and industrial piers had catapulted the development of the Central Luzon region.

The tourism industry is also one of Subic’s strongest assets. The zone promotes ecotourism through guided treks and jungle survival tours. Aside from that, it boasts theme parks, diving spots (wreck diving), sailing, extreme water sports, and adventure parks. Outlet shops and duty-free shopping centers also attract tourists, especially those who like shopping and finding great deals.

Here are more things you need to know about Subic:

  • Language: The province of Zambales has three main languages — Tagalog, Ilocano, and Sambal.
  • Currency: Philippine peso (PHP, ₱). PHP100 is around USD 1.89, EUR 1.67, SGD 2.56 (as of March 2019).
  • Modes of payment: CASH is preferred. Credit card payments are widely accepted, especially in business districts. If you are going outside the urban zones, ensure that you have an ample amount of cash with you.
  • Connectivity: Strong data signal for both Smart and Globe, especially in urban areas.
  • Electricity Info: 220V, 60Hz. Mostly, Socket Type A.

Note: This travel guide will touch the municipality of Subic and Olongapo City.

HOW TO GET TO SUBIC

subic travel time

There are two gateways to Subic — the Clark International Airport and the Ninoy Aquino International Airport. The former (CIA), is the closest, located further northeast of Subic, while the latter (NAIA) is located in Manila.

MANILA TO SUBIC BY CAR

Subic is usually included in the itinerary for road trips up north. North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) connect Subic to Metro Manila. Bringing a car allows you to travel at your own pace and make a restroom break stop whenever necessary. Drive along NLEX until you reach the exit to SCTEX. Take the SCTEX Exit and continue driving to SBMA.

The travel time is two to four hours, depending on the traffic condition.

MANILA TO SUBIC BY REGULAR BUS

subic travel time

  • Whether you are coming from NAIA or any point in Metro Manila, travel to Victory Liner Bus Terminal. You can go to Pasay, Cubao or Caloocan terminal. The bus company plies to Olongapo from Manila daily. Bus leaves every 30 minutes. The buses are air-conditioned and have wi-fi on board.
  • Get on a Victory Liner bus bound for Olongapo. The fare is P230-290. The travel time is two to four hours. There’s normally a toilet break halfway.
  • From Olongapo, you can ride a jeepney or taxi to Subic/SBFZ. The fare varies depending on your destination and chosen mode of transportation. Note that jeepneys in Olongapo are color-coded per route. You can find more information about the jeepneys on the How to Get Around section below.

Note: If you are spending the night in Subic, you can check with your hotel if they have service from Olongapo Bus Terminal or Clark.

Alternatively, if you are coming from NAIA, you can take the P2P bus bound for Clark Airport . From Clark airport, you can either take the taxi to Victory Liner Dau-Mabalacat Terminal and take a bus to Olongapo Bus Terminal or you can take another P2P Bus to Subic.

CLARK TO SUBIC BY CAR

If you are coming from Clark, take the SCTEX and follow the road signs directing you to SBMA/SBFZ. The travel time is about 45 minutes, depending on the traffic condition.

CLARK AIRPORT TO SUBIC BY REGULAR BUS

  • From the airport, take a jeepney to the Main Gate Entrance of the Clark Freeport Zone.
  • From there, ride another jeepney to Dau-Mabalacat Bus Terminal.
  • Board a Victory Liner Bus bound for Olongapo at Dau-Mabalacat Terminal.
  • At Olongapo Bus Terminal, take a jeepney to Subic Town or SBFZ.

Travel time from Clark Airport to Dau Terminal is about 15 minutes. You’ll get to Subic in less than an hour. Total fare depends on the modes of transportation you choose. If you have light luggage with you, you can go for the jeepney. It’s a cheaper option. But if you have big and more than one piece of luggage, it’s recommended to take the taxi from the airport to Dau Bus Terminal. Or you can take the P2P bus service from Clark Airport to Olongapo.

CLARK AIRPORT TO SUBIC BY P2P BUS

subic travel time

CLARK TO SUBIC BY SHUTTLE BUS

According to 12Go , there are also shuttle buses or tourist buses available.

There are two companies offering direct transport service from Clark/Angeles City to Subic – Southern Cross Shuttle and Swagman Resort.

Southern Cross Shuttle operates daily, while Swagman Resort Bus only operates four days a week (M, W, F, Su). It is better to reserve a slot in advance. Both have designated pick-up and drop-off points in Angeles and Subic. The fare is quite steep at P500 per person.

HOW TO GET AROUND SUBIC AND OLONGAPO

  • Tricycle. There are a lot of tricycles in Subic town and Olongapo. “Trikes” can shuttle passengers following a particular route they chose to anchor their plate numbers to or they can function as a taxi by offering special trips, which usually works with tourists. These special trips can cover both short and long-distance route. The fare can range from P10 to P150. This includes the rate for a special trip from Olongapo Bus Terminal to Barretto in the municipality of Subic. Like the jeepneys, tricycles are not allowed inside the Subic Bay Freeport Zone. They can only go as far as the main gate of SBFZ.
  • Taxi. Unlike the jeepneys and tricycles, taxis are allowed inside the SBFZ. Taxis operating inside the Subic Bay Freeport Zone have fixed rates and have a fare matrix displayed inside. Meter service is non-existent here. Outside SBFZ, you can find a significant number of taxis in the city center, especially around Olongapo Bus Terminal. You can just negotiate the fare with the driver. The fare ranges from P50 to P400.
  • Coasters and Mini-Buses. Buses (Winstar), coasters, mini-buses operate inside the Subic Bay Freeport Zone. Their function is the same as jeepneys but only run inside the freeport zone. This is the cheaper option if you don’t like taking the taxis, but according to those who have tried it, the waiting can sometimes test your patience. The terminal is located at the main gate and can shuttle passengers directly to their hotels.

THINGS TO DO IN AND AROUND SUBIC

El kabayo subic trail.

subic travel time

Subic is sandwiched between densely forested mountains and Subic Bay. The mountains boast rugged trails yet to be charted. Among many trekking sites, the El Kabayo Subic Trail is relatively new. Under MAD Travel’s Tribe and Trek program, participants are exposed to the flora and fauna enveloping the trail while learning about jungle survival and making herbal medicine. This activity aims to help our indigenous tribes protect and preserve their ancestral domain by educating and helping us understand the importance of our natural heritage and sustainable tourism. The El Kabayo Subic trail is home to the Aeta’s Pastolan Tribe. Check out the waterfalls too near the end of the trail.

Rates: P1,800/pax (Day Tour) This rate covers transfers within Subic, meals (lunch and snack), local guides (they can communicate in English too), and the jungle survival training. For group/corporate package, you may inquire through their e-mail address and contact number. Wreck Diving and Snorkeling

Subic Bay is known for its deep calm waters. It is also said to be one of the biggest naval bases of the U.S. Navy outside their motherland when it was still operational.

Beyond the lush forests and the coasts, Subic Bay is laden with several vintage shipwrecks and WWII remnants that are drawing wreck diving enthusiasts, local and international divers alike. Para sa mga mahilig sa wasakan at pilit inuungkat ang nakaraan. Haha! Some of the shipwreck sites are only around 15 minutes from the diving centers. Whether you are just starting to learn diving or already an expert, the rich marine ecosystem offers a great underwater adventure.

Some of the shipwrecks in Subic Bay are the USS New York, the USS Lanikai, the Oryoku Maru, and the Sakura Maru.

Several dive centers and operators are stationed around the Subic Bay area. Rates vary depending on the course, number of sessions, and the inclusions, but recreational wreck dive prices usually range from P1000 to P3000 if you have your own gear and P1500 and P3800 if you’re renting gears too.

Some operators like Arizona Dive Shop allow non-divers onto the boat and let them snorkel instead. Snorkeling fee with gear rental costs P1000 to P1200.

Rich Mangrove Forests

Mangroves thrive best in tropical areas. The Philippines alone cradles about half of the world’s mangrove species. Mangrove forests play an important role in maintaining the balance in our ecosystem for both land and sea. Protecting our mangrove forests means protecting our environment and our future. Subic Bay has over 60 hectares of mangrove forests scattered in six different sites including the Olongapo Bay Area, Triboa Bay Area, and Ilanin Bay Area. Source: SBMA Ecology Center.

The most popular site is the Triboa Mangrove Park. The best time to go is early in the morning or at dusk during the dry season. Take note of the tide condition too. Here are the rules and regulations when visiting the mangrove forest sites. Please follow them.

  • Respect the area and be highly aware of the environment and your actions at all times. Don’t take anything with you — plants or animals. Don’t catch the crabs and other crustaceans and don’t ever step on mangrove roots and other vegetation.
  • Move as little as possible and be quiet to avoid disturbing the wildlife. Do not play loud music.
  • Don’t litter. Don’t smoke. If you need to use the toilet, there are restrooms available.

For inquiries, sponsorships, donations, and other concerns, please contact SBMA Ecology Center . If you want to report any violations, you may also direct your concern to their office.

Subic Shopping!

Of course, even abroad, Filipinos are known to spend money on shopping especially for souvenirs, stuff they can bring home to their loved ones. The “pasalubong culture” is strongly ingrained in most, if not all, Filipino travelers. There are plenty of shopping and dining facilities in Subic, the most popular are the outlet stores and the duty-free shops. Borrowing Subic’s tourism catchphrase, “It’s More Fun-tastic in Subic!” Agree?

Beaches and Resorts

subic travel time

After a day of beach bumming, you can put on your bagain-hunter hat and go duty-free shopping! Aside from the beaches, you might want to take a look at the stores on your way back to Manila. Beach + retail therapy. No other formula is more effective in relieving stress.

It may not be as fair as Boracay or any other beach you frequent, but the beach here is okay with grayish sand hugged by gentle waves.

Spectacular Sunsets

subic travel time

Subic Bay presents a spectacular sunset on a clear day. There are many great spots for sunset-watching around the Subic Bay area — Malawaan Park, Boardwalk Park, The Lighthouse Marina Resort, and the whole stretch of Waterfront Road where you can also find the Inang Laya Monument, The Hellship (Oryoku Maru) Monument, and Children of the Sun Returning Monument. Further north, you can both enjoy the beach and the view of the sunset at Baloy Beach, Manga Beach, and Sierra Beach.

Subic Bay Yacht Cruise

subic travel time

You might be wondering why we included a yacht cruise. You might be thinking it’s expensive. Well, it is. Haha. But there are ways to lower the cost. If you’re a big group, this is something to consider especially if you’re celebrating an occasion.

If you can spare over a thousand bucks for an island-hopping tour in other parts of the country, you might want to consider this too. It’s just like joining a group tour. If you’re a big group, you can scratch this off your bucket list for as low as P1050 per person.

So, gather all your friends or your family and enjoy this unique and “nakaluwag-luwag” experience. This is also a perfect romantic getaway, especially when you do it at dusk for the beautiful sunset. If you like it, put a ring on it. Hihi.

subic travel time

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT SUBIC

When is the best time to visit subic.

December – May. Most of the attractions in Subic are done outdoors, so it’s better to go there during the dry months. High summer months are April and May, but summer begins as early as March. The rainy or wet season is from July to October with the highest chance of rainfall in July, August, and September.

How can I get around Subic Bay Freeport Zone?

Tricycles and Jeepneys are not allowed inside the premises, but they can drop you off until the Main Gate. From there, you can choose to take a fixed rate taxi or take the shuttle bus.

How will I know the exact fare for the taxi ride inside SBFZ?

Fares are regulated. The accredited taxi operators follow a set fare matrix which is displayed inside the taxi. You can book in advance or just hail when you see an unoccupied one. Note that phone booking will incur a certain amount of fee (pick up charge), which can range from P30 to P100. This is on top of the fare, which ranges from P50-P400. There are also restrictions like a maximum of four (4) passengers only per taxi and one drop-off point per ride.

Step-by-Step Travel Guide to SUBIC

subic travel time

Subic is a former US Navy Base in the province of Zambales. It is also known for its maritime industry and logistics and warehousing services. Located in Subic Bay, the town is part of the Subic Bay Freeport Zone along with the city of Olongapo in Zambales and Morong and Hermosa in Bataan.

Apart from being an economic zone, one of Subic’s biggest resources is the tourism industry. The attractions in the zone include theme parks, diving spots (wreck diving), extreme water sports, sailing, and adventure parks. It also has guided treks and jungle survival tours that help promote ecotourism. Tourists also come to Subic to visit outlet shops and duty-free shopping centers where you can find great deals.

ATTENTION! Don’t forget to accomplish all the requirements prior to your visit. Take note of the new normal travel rules and guidelines and make sure to comply with them. There are many trekking sites in Subic. One of those is the El Kabayo Subic Trail. You can join MAD Travel’s Tribe and Trek program where you can explore the flora and fauna surrounding the trail and learn about jungle survival as well as making herbal medicine. The El Kabayo Subic Trail is home to Aeta’s Pastolan Tribe and the program aims to help the indigenous tribes preserve their ancestral domain. This helps tourists understand the importance of natural heritage and sustainable tourism.

You can also check out the waterfalls towards the end of the trail. It’s not grand though, so may also choose to skip it if waterfalls are not your thing.

Rate: P1,800/pax (Day Tour). This rate is inclusive of transfers within Subic, lunch and snack, local guides, and jungle survival training. Contact Details: [email protected] / +63 917 713 8607 Official Website: www.madtravel.org

Wreck Diving and Snorkeling

Subic is claimed to be one of the biggest naval bases of the U.S. Navy outside the US when it was still operational. Now, Subic Bay is filled with several vintage shipwrecks and remnants of WWII. These attract both local and international divers who have a penchant for wreck diving.

Some shipwrecks in Subic Bay are the USS New York, the Oryoku Maru, the Sakura Maru, and the USS Lanikai. Some of these sites are only about 15 minutes away from diving centers.

There are several dive centers around Subic Bay and the rates vary depending on the course, the number of sessions, and the inclusions. Recreational wreck dive prices range from P1,000 to P3,000 if you have your own gear. If you will rent gears, add P500 to P800 on top of that.

If you’re not a diver, some diving operators allow non-divers to go snorkeling. The snorkeling fee with gear rental is around P1,000 to P1,200.

Subic Bay Cruise

A Yacht Cruise is expensive, but if you’re celebrating a special occasion, this is something you can do. This is perfect for a romantic getaway especially if you do it at dusk in time for the gorgeous sunset.

You can also split the cost if you’re in a big group and celebrating special events like reunions. The rates will depend on the type of boat and the size. You may contact or check the official websites of Subic Bay Yacht Club and Subic Sailing Club for inquiries.

Spectacular Sunsets

subic travel time

Subic Bay has many great spots where you can watch the spectacular sunset. Some of the spots are the Malawaan Park, The Lighthouse Marina Resort, Boardwalk Park, and the Waterfront Road where you can also find the Children of the Sun Monument, Inang Laya Monument, and The Hellship or Oryoku Maru Monument. You can even admire the beauty while on a yacht cruise.

Rich Mangrove Forests

Mangroves have an important role in maintaining the balance in our ecosystem. In the Philippines, there are over 30 mangrove species. Subic Bay has more than 60 hectares of mangrove forests. These are scattered in six different sites including Triboa Bay Area, Olongapo Bay Area, and Ilanin Bay Area.

Triboa Mangrove Park is the most popular site. It is best to visit early in the morning or at dusk during the dry season and take into consideration the tide too. When you visit mangrove forest sites, make sure to follow their rules and regulations. Respect the area. Do not take plants or animals with you or step on mangrove roots and other vegetation. Don’t be too loud when exploring and do not litter. Restrooms are available in the area.

Best Time to Visit

subic travel time

Most of the attractions in Subic are outdoors so it’s best to go during the dry months. Summer months are from March to May, but the period from December to February is pretty dry too. July to October period is the rainy season, which could hinder you to enjoy many outdoor activities.

Practical Travel Tips

  • Always check for updates. Some adjustments have to be taken for establishments and attractions to operate during the new normal. Don’t forget to contact or visit the official websites or Facebook pages of the attractions and activities for announcements and updates before going.
  • Bring sun protection. The sun can be unforgiving sometimes, especially in summer. Don’t forget to bring a hat/cap and sunglasses or apply sunscreen. Avoid sunscreen products that contain the following chemicals: oxybenzone, benzophenone, and parabens.
  • Leave no trace behind. Help protect the environment by collecting your garbage and following proper waste disposal. If you can’t find a garbage bin right away, keep your trash with you until you find one.
  • Practice sustainable and responsible tourism. Support the local community by purchasing their products. Lessen the waste by bringing your own water bottle and dry bags or eco bags to avoid buying plastic bottled drinks and plastic bags.
  • Follow the town’s rules and regulations. Make sure you know the travel safety protocols and requirements and follow them.

Understanding Subic Bay’s Geography and History

Overview of subic bay.

Ah, Subic Bay! You might have heard how this coastal area in the Philippines is the perfect blend of nature, history, and entertainment. Subic Bay is nestled on the west coast of Luzon, surrounded by the lush hills of the Zambales Mountain Range. The bay itself, naturally deep and sheltered, has been a valuable seaport over the centuries. Today, Subic Bay is not just a hub for maritime activity but also a haven for tourists like you seeking a mix of adventure and relaxation.

Historical significance of Subic Bay

Subic Bay has a tale that’s as deep as its waters. For starters, it served as a Spanish naval base in the late 19th century. Later, Americans took notice of its strategic importance and transformed it into a massive naval facility. Post-American tenure, it was converted into the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA), becoming one of the first and most successful cases of military base conversion in Asia. You’ll find that each corner of Subic tells part of its storied past.

Major areas within Subic Bay

Subic Bay is carved into different areas, each with its unique flavor. The bustling Subic Bay Freeport Zone, formerly the U.S. Naval Base Subic Bay, today houses a blend of industrial, commercial, and leisure facilities. Nearby, you have the Olongapo City with its vibrant streets and markets. And then there’s the more tranquil, natural side: mountains for trekking, jungles for eco-tourism, and pristine beaches waiting to be explored.

Subic Bay Travel Guide

In a nutshell.

Apart from being a world-class economic hub, Subic Bay is blessed with a magnificent bay and tranquil forests, making it an ideal playground for those who crave for both nature and adventure.

Why go to Subic Bay

Straddling the bay in the west and the mountains in the east, Subic Bay assures endless opportunities for fun and thrilling explorations .

Ecotourism is a big thing here and you'll get to enjoy the rich local flora and fauna. To begin with, you can sign up for some hard-core boot camp where you can learn survival skills from the same Aetas who trained the American soldiers back when it was a military base.

Perhaps you wanna be like the modern Tarzan and swing from tree to tree, Tree Top adventure can arrange that for you.

Or saddle up and pretend you are the ranch owner's family while galloping around El Kabayo Stable on a thoroughbred.

If you prefer something more laid back but still close to nature, Subic Bay has three forest trails to choose from.

You want an up close and personal encounter with the tigers and the sea lions, don’t you? Zoobic Safari and Ocean Adventure will make sure it happens.

You can also play golf, go-kart, or maybe cruise with the Subic Bay Yacht Club. Go lounge in some beach resorts, dive, or indulge in water sports activities like parasailing or banana boat. After all, what's a visit to Subic Bay without some time out in the sun, right? Whatever your type of adventure is, we're sure you won't be leaving disappointed.

When to go to Subic Bay

Due to its geographical location, Subic Bay is naturally protected from the onslaught of typhoons. This means anytime is the best time to go there. However, since most of the activities are outdoor, it would be best to visit during the dry season from November to May. Best to avoid holidays like Holy Week though as it's guaranteed to be packed.

Where to stay in Subic Bay

Sadly for backpackers, most hotels in Subic Bay are geared more towards families and group travellers.

This means it will be a challenge to find dirt cheap accommodations or decent dormitory type hostels. The Cabin (Bldg. 204 Schley Road CBD) offers bunk bed for PHP650 though so if you are adamant on getting the cheapest possible option and don't mind sharing spaces, then make sure to book directly with them and well in advance.

As Subic Bay is definitely a family friendly destination, you can find plenty of hotels offering family rooms that can accommodate for up to 4 people for only PHP1800 to PHP3000 so budget wise, it is not that bad if you're traveling in a group.

There are also numerous hotels within the free port zone with excellent access to many shops and restaurants.

If you wish to be in the heart of the city, you can select a hotel right in the centre of Olongapo like in Barangay East Bajac-Bajac. If you're on a budget, you can also look for inns a little bit farther away in Barangay Matain or Barrio Barretto. The latter is a host to many girly bars though so avoid if traveling with kids or family.

Where to eat in Subic Bay

Subic Bay continues to develop as a premier tourist destination, so does the restaurant scene in and around the area. From cutesy cafes to fast food chains to casual and fine dining restaurants, you're bound to find something that will keep you coming back for more.

Subic Bay's history as a former American naval base and now as a world-class economic engine has shaped its dining culture. You will find a mishmash of international cuisines from Indian to Italian. Of course, there's always Filipino comfort food and Rico’s Fastfood and Restaurant (21 Corpuz St. West Tapinac, Olongapo) serves home cooked food at very affordable prices. In fact, they have an eat-all-you-can buffet for only PHP150.

If you're craving for some Japanese cuisine, Sakura (Lot 7B Rizal Hwy, SBFZ) and Chef Samurai (Raymundo St, Subic Bay Freeport Zone) come highly recommended.

Craving for some kimchi? We suggest trying MG Koreanfood Grill (Canal Road | Corner Labitan Street, SBFZ) or Gangnam Premium Korean Buffet (Harbor Point, Rizal Hwy, SBFZ).

Hankering for Indian dishes? We can swear by either Rama Mahal Bar and Restaurant (Sampson Rd, SBFZ) or Rachi Curry Corner (Space No. 240 Harbor Point Mall, CBD). These are just merely suggestions, we urge you to embark on your own culinary adventure and we're sure there's plenty more to love in Subic Bay.

How to get around Subic Bay

Getting around Subic Bay can be costly especially if you're traveling alone. Since tricycles and jeepneys are not permitted inside the bay , you will have no choice but to catch a taxi if you are commuting. We've heard of fare inflating to as much as 300% so ask your hotel's receptionist for a ballpark figure.

Attractions are quite far from each other so if you can negotiate multiple stops for a fixed rate, even better. For example, one way fare to popular attractions such Zoobic Safari, Tree Top, or Ocean Adventure is about PHP500.

Once outside the main gate though, you will find bus and jeepney terminals that can take you around CBD or residential areas. Buses and jeepneys are all colour coded according to their route. Best to check with the drivers which colour to hop on.

How to get to and from Subic Bay

Air Juan flies to Subic Bay International Airport directly from Manila Bay daily for about PHP3,000 to PHP5,300.

If coming from NAIA (Ninoy Aquino International Airport) though, Victory Liner has frequent buses to Olongapo that departs every hour starting from 4am. The nearest terminal is the one in Pasay but they do have other terminals in Caloocan, Sampaloc and Cubao. Travel time will take a minimum of 3 hours depending on traffic conditions and fare is around PHP200. There also taxis that you can hire just outside the airport but it will be a lot more expensive.

If you're coming from Clark International Airport (DMIA), it will take you about an hour to get to Subic. You can take a taxi from the airport directly to Subic or you can ride the jeepney that goes to Dau Bus terminal. From there, get on a bus bound to Olongapo for about PHP100. Travel time will depend on whether you take an express or a regular bus. The latter costs a bit less but travel time can stretch for up to 2 hours.

There are also tourist buses, Swagman Bus and Southern Cross Shuttle. The former departs daily from Swagman Hotel (411 Antonio Flores St, Ermita, Manila) and Swagman Narra (S.L. Orosa Street, Diamond Subdivision, Balibago, Angeles). The latter departs from Brass Knob Hotel (440 21st Street, Don Juico Avenue Clarkview, Angeles). Fare from Manila is PHP600 and PHP500 if coming from Angeles.

Is Subic Bay a safe place to visit?

Like anywhere else, safety is relative here. If you keep your common sense with you, you should be alright. Don't flash valuables, carry enough cash just for the day, use the safe to keep valuables. If going into girly bars, do not get involved with minors or drugs.

As Saigon fell 49 years ago, my father flew us onto the USS Midway in a fraught escape

My family was among more than 3,000 desperate refugees evacuated on the us aircraft carrier. it's only recently that my war pilot dad can talk about what happened..

April 30 marks 49 years since the fall of Saigon in 1975 , the death of South Vietnam and the beginning of the exodus of a million Vietnamese over the next two decades .

This is the story of how a Vietnamese air force officer flew his family and two dozen other evacuees in a helicopter onto the USS Midway for their escape as they lost their country to communist North Vietnam. Nguyen Van Dong, now 81, lives in Texas. This account was written by his daughter Ngan Nguyen, who lives with her husband and children in New York City.

Can Tho province, South Vietnam, on April 28, 1975

A heavy fist banged on our front door. My family lived near Can Tho air base in South Vietnam, which was used by the U.S. Air Force and the Republic of Vietnam Air Force during the war.

My father, Nguyen Van Dong, was an air force major. At 3 years old, I hid behind his legs as he opened the door. An officer said the North Vietnamese army was encroaching. He ordered us to evacuate immediately to Con Son Island, along with 40 other families on the base, admonishing female evacuees to dress plainly so as not to attract attention. All able-bodied men, including my father, were instructed to stay behind to fight.

My mother, Nguyen Thi Nghiem, packed frantically for what she thought would be a few days, taking only what she could carry on her shoulders. She would have my little brother strapped to her back, and my sister and me each clutching one of her hands.

Despite the fact that the United States had already withdrawn its combat forces two years earlier, no one wanted to believe that South Vietnam faced an imminent demise, but no one could ignore the reality of the constant sirens and bombs.

Reunited on Con Son Island

Mom, my siblings and I arrived at Con Son in the middle of the night on a Chinook helicopter. During the evacuation, Mom had been too distracted to notice the lump growing on the edge of my face. But now I was feverish with mumps and a throat infection.

Fortunately, a friend knew a doctor stationed at Con Son prison. He managed to pick us up and transport us to his home, where he fed us, gave me medicine and urged us to sleep.

Back at the Can Tho air base, Gen. Nguyen Huy Anh ordered all pilots to meet on Con Son. That included my father, whose mission was to transport the women and children on Con Son to somewhere safe. Dad's friends, who were on base duty, had to stay behind. Dad promised to take care of their families until they could reunite with them.

Dad landed his Huey on Con Son Island about 20 hours after we had arrived and leaped with joy when he saw us heading toward him. I can still remember the scent of him as he covered me in kisses. Together we hurried to the beach, where women and children were waiting and whispering about the impending collapse of Saigon, our nation's capital.

Washington had withdrawn its diplomats – the death knell of South Vietnam. Dad knew that he and his cohorts could not defend a country with a trickle of bullets when the enemy had continued support from China and the Soviet Union.

'The Sympathizer' relives Vietnam War: From 'homeless among the clouds' to working with Robert Downey Jr., Kieu Chinh keeps going

Evacuation onto the USS Midway

Con Son became the central meeting point for evacuation of both military officials and civilians. At 7 a.m., Dad and his deputy pilot, Cao Minh Hoang, squeezed 31 passengers into a helicopter normally reserved for a dozen. Bags had to be left behind. In the controlled chaos, I saw something sparkly on the beach and snatched it. It was a pack of my favorite instant noodles.

The Huey was overstuffed with people whose lives were now completely in Dad’s hands. Everyone kept still, even the babies, fearing that one small movement could cause a crash. The 40-minute escape was fraught with despair. The wives now realized the dire fate that awaited their husbands. Mom was the only woman who wasn’t wailing.

Dad spotted the USS Midway and flew closer to the massive gray carrier, majestic against the vast blue ocean. The crewmen below navigated Dad’s craft by waving sticks, and he safely landed on a piece of U.S. territory.

Crewmen rushed to the Huey as the blades stopped swirling. They counted the number of people disembarking in disbelief and praised Dad’s aviation skills. Whatever sense of relief or accomplishment my dad had was short-lived. He asked whether he could refuel and head back to Con Son but was told there was no going back.

As Dad watched the Americans push Hueys overboard to make room for other landing helicopters, his chest clenched as he thought of loved ones left behind. We were now officially refugees at the full mercy of our U.S. allies. Our luggage was searched for weapons and contraband. The fear was that Viet Cong would hide among the horde of evacuees.

We joined several thousand other evacuees in the dining area below deck and devoured the undeniably all-American ham sandwiches. Not knowing if soy sauce was available in America, one of our friends shoved several packets into her pockets.

From USS Midway to a merchant ship

After a few hours on the Midway, officers instructed our helicopter group to board a nearby ship. We had to mount makeshift ropes to board the merchant ship.

Dad strapped my baby brother onto his back. He helped get every member of his party ready to climb a fraying rope to the ship. Mom safely reached the other side with my sister and me. She turned around and saw Dad’s rope break. Miraculously, he was able to pull himself up while holding on to my brother, avoiding the 7-meter plunge into the netting below.

The merchant ship was crowded with approximately 10,000 evacuees. We docked for about a week, waiting for more to board. Other ships rescued as many refugees as they could, but they were simply overwhelmed with more people than they could handle. Dad worried about what nation would accept thousands of refugees from an unpopular war.

War still haunts Vietnamese Americans: Five decades of Henry Kissinger's human 'legacy of war' – a trauma passed among generations

Food stocks ran low. Each person was rationed a bowl of rice with canned tuna.

Our group huddled in one area of the ship. Next to us was a family in distress. The mother was alone with five young children. Mom befriended them and offered two bags of instant noodles in her bag. She didn’t know the woman was Capt. Kiem Do’s wife. She had been separated from her husband, a navy officer who famously organized the successful evacuation of more than 30,000 refugees aboard more than 30 ships . The two women became lifelong friends.

I was still weak with the mumps. Mom had a limited supply of medicine and ground the pills using an American quarter. A gaunt woman wailed in agony through the night. Just when we thought we could sleep again, she would wail more and louder. One day, after waking from a nap, I saw two sailors throw her lifeless body overboard.

Years later, in the comfort and safety of America, I asked my parents if this really happened. They said there were many who were seriously ill on the ship, suffering from diarrhea, dehydration and even dysentery. Those who died were thrown overboard.

I shuddered thinking how it could’ve been me. But Mom always pointed out how generous people were when they saw me suffering. Many strangers around us gave me half their rice portions. The extra rice and penicillin saved my life. My parents vowed to each other that once our family settled somewhere, they would do all they could to support their community.

On that ship, news of Saigon’s collapse on April 30 trickled in. Whispers spread from group to group. We learned about the suicides of some generals of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam, one of whom was Dad’s mentor. As their fates were shared, the women in our party started weeping again.

Dad left us to take a walk. His tears could flow more freely among strangers.

Refugee camps at Subic Bay, Philippines, and the US territory of Guam

Many days later, as we faced dwindling food rations and starvation, our boat landed by the U.S. Navy base at Subic Bay, Philippines. The Philippine government was initially hesitant to shelter South Vietnamese refugees but ultimately agreed to provide a haven on Grande Island , in the mouth of Subic Bay, on the condition that the transits were brief. We refugees were contained in one area.

Upon arrival, all nine children in our group were famished and dehydrated. Mom opened my pack of favorite instant noodles that I had found on the beach, crushed the contents in a bowl with cold water and gave each of us a sip.

Around us, vendors wandered, trying to take advantage of our desperate plight. Dad’s only valuable possession was a watch given to him by President Nguyen Van Thieu of the now defunct Republic of Vietnam. He traded it for scraps of food and two cans of Coke. Later, he said the Coke brought color back to my face and, for the first time since our dramatic evacuation, he knew I'd survive my illness. That, to him, was priceless.

Decades after fall of Saigon, Vietnamese voices crucial to understanding Vietnam War's impact

We stayed at the Subic Bay camp for two days, huddled together in makeshift lodgings to keep warm during the cold night. Food eventually arrived, and the men of our group routinely waited in line for handouts, sometimes as long as six hours.

After Subic Bay, we were flown to Guam, a U.S. territory. In Guam, we were processed as political refugees. It was there that Mom felt more sane and settled. But anxiety still plagued her. In moments when she thought about the fate awaiting her endangered family left behind, she'd take out her small bottle of Chanel No. 5. This was the first gift that Dad had brought back for her from his pilot training in the United States. For her, it represented hope that one day, we could return to a normal life and she may go to social gatherings wearing Chanel.

A new home in New Orleans

In the autumn of 1975, after residing at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida for a few months, we settled in a neighborhood of New Orleans called Woodlawn that primarily housed Vietnamese refugees.

Not long after we resettled there, Jim and Betty Adams became our sponsors. Perhaps they chose my parents because they had shared professions as pilot and teacher, respectively. My siblings and I were proud to have two American brothers, Jim Jr. and Dave. Betty spent hours each week teaching my mom English.

Years later, Mom became one of the first Vietnamese American teachers in Louisiana. The Carters, who owned a horse ranch, also “adopted” us. Their son had served in Vietnam.

When we first arrived, Dad had offers to fly for oil companies, given the boom in the Gulf of Mexico and the need for helicopter pilots to fly between rigs. Mom didn’t want to take any more risks and insisted that he find a terrestrial job.

He started as a hospital translator and then became an Exxon mechanic. Mom was the “produce girl” at Schwegmann's and used her income to give back to the community. On Sundays, she made huge pots of pho and cha gio (fried spring rolls), and opened up our home to “uncles'' and “aunts'' whom I would eventually understand to be young refugees without families.

Mom’s spring rolls would later save us from hostile Cajun neighbors who initially found us threatening as outsiders. They eventually not only left us alone to live our American dream, but provided support when Mom was suffering from cancer.

What I learned after returning to post-war Vietnam

Mom died two weeks after I turned 18. Heartbroken, Dad found it difficult to accept her death, considering all they had overcome together. She had survived bombs and bullets only to lose her life in suburbia.

In the wake of that loss, I embarked on a journey to find my extended family. After a trip to Vietnam in 1992, where I reunited with all four of my grandparents, I resolved to find a career that would connect me to them, while honoring Mom’s legacy of giving back.

I spent years working in international development, helping Vietnam integrate into the world economy and improve the quality of life and potential of its people – before pivoting to academia to learn about the region and conflict that had long intrigued me.

On April 30, 2011, exactly 36 years since I left Vietnam, I earned my doctorate in the field of Asian politics. While researching, I found that South Vietnamese stories were underrepresented in the larger mainstream narrative of the conflict that defined a generation. Having grown up in a community of political refugees, listening to war tales in my youth and witnessing the U.S.-Vietnam reconciliation process as a development practitioner, I can appreciate multiple viewpoints.

Reconciliation between former enemies: Learning about our past in Vietnam helps new generation see beyond legacy of war

Reconciliation, however, cannot be complete without the inclusion and healing of the South Vietnamese, who felt abandoned by their U.S. allies, misunderstood, and unfairly vilified and misrepresented in pop culture and war literature.

Younger generations of Vietnamese Americans like me unknowingly experienced intergenerational trauma , carrying the scars of our shared and suppressed history. Our worldview is likely shaped by our parents’ hardships and lived experiences.

As for my father, it wasn’t until the fall of Kabul, in Afghanistan in 2021 , that he was finally ready to talk about what happened in Vietnam. The post-traumatic stress disorder that had long plagued him suddenly came to the fore, prompting him to reach out to fellow Da Lat National Military Academy peers, now octogenarians and nonagenarians.

These days, Dad wants Vietnamese people everywhere to succeed and make a positive impact on society. While therapy is still not in his vocabulary, he finds healing in writing, meditating, visiting the local Cao Dai temple, drinking boba tea with his grandchildren and cheering for the NBA Dallas Mavericks.

As a former war pilot, he's also rooting for Ukrainian pilots as they now bravely defend their homeland.
