• How long can older adults volunteer abroad for?

Whether you’re seeking mission trips for retirees or overseas volunteer opportunities for seniors, IVHQ is here to make it easy and affordable to organize an international volunteer trip, no matter what your age.

As an IVHQ volunteer, you’ll be connected with a dedicated volunteer expert to support you every step of the way. You can choose to volunteer at any time of the year, for anywhere between 1 week and 24 weeks, and Program Fees start from just $20 (approximately $20 ) per day including accommodation . All IVHQ programs are fully hosted experiences , with your accommodation, meals, airport pickup and all your in-country essentials organized for you!

Once you arrive at your volunteering destination, you’ll be greeted at the airport, transported to your accommodation and joined with a group of other international volunteers for your program orientation. Your weekdays will be spent supporting the project of your choice, while your weekends will be free to explore your host country.

Depending on where you choose to volunteer, IVHQ offers a variety of accommodation options:

Is it safe for seniors to volunteer abroad?

Yes, it is safe! All IVHQ programs adhere to comprehensive risk management and we have rigorous health and safety measures in place. As a result, IVHQ has an unmatched record when it comes to keeping volunteers of all ages safe and healthy during their volunteer experience.

To help keep you safe, travel insurance is compulsory for all IVHQ volunteers. We offer our own travel insurance for our volunteers, which has been customized specifically to cover the kind of activities you will be doing. It’s the same price for everyone, no matter how old you are - and there is no minimum or maximum age limit!

You also have the option to change your travel dates, volunteer program and destination for free up to 14 days before your start date, thanks to our flexible booking policy .

I have been a medical volunteer before and this experience was different in exactly the ways I wanted. I knew that in order to volunteer as a nurse outside of an organized mission I would have to give up some things, but I also knew I would gain others. My project in Mcleod Ganj was perfect in every way, seriously. It was exactly what I wanted, and had been promised, working with young Tibetan refugees, who needed my help, my time and my love. To volunteer abroad as a senior with IVHQ, you will need to start by choosing the volunteer program you would like to participate in and submitting . Here’s how it works:

• Browse our senior volunteer opportunities and choose a destination and the project you wish to volunteer on, as well as the dates you wish to volunteer.
• Complete with the details of your chosen program and dates. You will then receive an email confirming that IVHQ has received your application. Within 48 hours (2 working days), you will receive an email from your IVHQ Program Manager acknowledging your application and confirming the country, project and dates of your volunteer program. In this email, you will receive instructions on how to pay the Registration Fee in order to confirm your booking with IVHQ.
• Log in to your MyIVHQ account to pay your Registration Fee. As soon as your Registration Fee has been received by IVHQ, you will be provided with all the information and support you need to prepare for your upcoming volunteer program. Your IVHQ Program Manager will be your point of contact throughout your preparations up until you finish your volunteer program.

Bali Sea Turtle Rescue

Head to the tropical island of  Nusa Penida, Indonesia with GoEco. Work closely with sea turtles and contribute to conservation strategies. Daily tasks include cleaning and feeding the turtles at the center, as well as assisting with public outreach. You’ll also collect turtle eggs brought by fishermen who’ve saved them from being taken as pets or eaten.

Just 45 minutes on a speed boat from Bali, Nusa Penida is known for its gorgeous beaches and incredible nature. You’ll stay at a volunteer house that’s right near all the action. You can also add a highly recommended culture week to meet other volunteers and learn about Balinese culture.   

Cape Town Community Projects

Journey to South Africa, where you’ll work to create  sustainable community projects  for impoverished communities. This sanctuary houses 90 species of animals and reptiles, as well as a cheetah breeding program. You will get to see and interact with cheetahs, lions, white tigers, meerkats, and lemurs. Your tasks may include feeding animals, cleaning their cages and habitats, playing with them, and also maintaining the ranch. Founded in 2003,  Maximo Nivel  offers many different programs in Latin America for travelers who want to volunteer, intern abroad,  teach abroad , learn Spanish, and more. Nutrition and Public Health in Fiji

If you’ve ever worked or are interested in nutrition, dietetics, nursing, physiotherapy and community health, then this program in Fiji is calling for you! This project tackles the major health problems facing in Fiji right now. Since 34% of Fijians live in poverty, there is lack of adequate nutritional food and lack of education in healthy eating. Obesity and diabetes are on the rise. Volunteers are asked to help with a variety of health programs alongside a qualified practitioner. Some program tasks include performing health checks, promoting and running outreach campaigns on education in healthy eating, exercises, and diabetes awareness. Rural School Community Support in Bodhgaya, India

This rural community just outside of Bodhgaya needs tremendous help in various areas such as teaching children and childcare, conducting healthcare checks (if qualified), educating the community in hygiene, nutrition, and first aid, or help in renovation projects around the community. Honestly, there are endless possibilities for senior groups! While participating in volunteer programs, set realistic goals and don’t succumb to overbearing emotions. Balance your volunteering life along with your family, friends, and job (if any).

• Decide the right time: If you are close to retirement or are willing to take a career break, it’s best to wait until you are completely free before joining. 
• Figure out what you’d like to volunteer for: Choose your area of expertise, skillset, and what you can offer at best. 
• Destination country: Decide the country you’d like to visit while volunteering. Every country has its beauty and a lot to offer. However, this must be a balanced volunteer+traveling opportunity, not any other way around. 
• Flexible time frame: How many hours can you dedicate to volunteering? There are both short-term and long-term projects. Choose wisely, depending on your capabilities.

With children aged 10 and 7 we curated a program for the family where they participated on our kindergarten teaching program for 2 weeks with lots of staff support and also got ample time to explore India with their children.

This group of students signed up to join the medical electives placement in Nepal for 4 weeks where we gave them a rotation in various departments of the hospital. Their medical placement allowed them to earn credits on their medical degree and learn from patient cases they would not normally see back home and

Isis Barei & Caitlin Neil from the UK join our Women’s Empowerment program in June 2019

These two friends came to India to participate on our empowerment program with women where they taught English and life skills to a group of women in Fort Kochi, Kerala. Living and working like locals gave them a chance to really learn about life in India, explore the area and give back to the community.

Camilla Børsand and Baptiste Menaspa from Norway joined the Engineering Placement in January 2018. Living in a remote part of Nepal and assisting with structural design work with local engineers and the community was an experience of a lifetime for these two students. Not only could they add this experience to their resume but they also got to learn from the challenges of working with limited resources.

Jack Tysowski from Canada joined us in August 2018 assisting at a dog shelter in Galle, Sri Lanka.

As a gap year student Jack would go everyday for about 4 hours to help the shelter that was devoted to the well-being of stray dogs in southern Sri Lanka. If your passionate about dogs and love to care for them this is the program for you!

Meet our group of final year French Nursing students who got to work in well known public hospitals in Southern Sri Lanka. They got to work in several departments of the hospital where they could practice basic procedures under the supervision of expert medical and nursing teams. On the side they also got to explore Sri Lanka and truly immerse themselves into island life.

This volunteer program in South Africa is a great way for volunteers to gain experience working with children and groups. Learning new outdoor activities such as swimming, boxing, spike ball surfing and skateboarding
