DR. NEIL DEGRASSE TYSON RETURNS TO ALTRIA THEATER
Apr. 24 , 2023, for immediate release.
Tickets on Sale Friday, April 28, at 10AM Local
(APRIL 24, RICHMOND, VA) Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson returns to Altria Theater on November 15, 2023, with ‘Cosmic Collisions’. Tickets go on sale to the general public Friday, April 28, at 10:00AM. Tickets can be purchased at altriatheater.com.
Neil deGrasse Tyson was born and raised in New York City where he was educated in the public schools clear through his graduation from the Bronx High School of Science . Tyson went on to earn his BA in Physics from Harvard and his PhD in Astrophysics from Columbia .
In 2001, Tyson was appointed by President Bush to serve on a twelve-member commission that studied the Future of the U.S. Aerospace Industry. The final report was published in 2002 and contained recommendations (for Congress and for the major agencies of the government) that would promote a thriving future of transportation, space exploration, and national security.
In 2004, Tyson was once again appointed by President Bush to serve on a nine-member commission on the Implementation of the United States Space Exploration Policy, dubbed the “Moon, Mars, and Beyond” commission. This group navigated a path by which the new space vision can become a successful part of the American agenda. And in 2006, the head of NASA appointed Tyson to serve on its prestigious Advisory Council, which guides NASA through its perennial need to fit ambitious visions into restricted budgets.
In addition to dozens of professional publications , Dr. Tyson has written, and continues to write for the public. From 1995 to 2005, Tyson was a monthly essayist for Natural History magazine under the title Universe . And among Tyson’s fifteen books is his memoir The Sky is Not the Limit: Adventures of an Urban Astrophysicist ; and Origins: Fourteen Billion Years of Cosmic Evolution , co-written with Donald Goldsmith. Origins is the companion book to the PBS NOVA four-part mini-series Origins , in which Tyson served as on-camera host. The program premiered in September 2004.
Two of Tyson’s other books are the playful and informative Death By Black Hole and Other Cosmic Quandaries , which was a New York Times bestseller, and The Pluto Files: The Rise and Fall of America’s Favorite Planet , chronicling his experience at the center of the controversy over Pluto’s planetary status. The PBS NOVA documentary The Pluto Files , based on the book, premiered in March 2010.
In February 2012, Tyson released his tenth book, containing every thought he has ever had on the past, present, and future of space exploration: Space Chronicles: Facing the Ultimate Frontier .
For five seasons, beginning in the fall of 2006, Tyson appeared as the on-camera host of PBS NOVA’s spinoff program NOVA ScienceNOW , which is an accessible look at the frontier of all the science that shapes the understanding of our place in the universe.
During the summer of 2009 Tyson identified a cadre of professional standup comedians to assist his effort in bringing science to commercial radio with the NSF-funded pilot program StarTalk. Now also a popular Podcast , for three years it enjoyed a limited-run Television Series on the National Geographic Channel. StarTalk combines celebrity guests with informative yet playful banter. The target audience is all those people who never thought they would, or could, like science. In its first year on television and in three successive seasons, it was nominated for a Best Informational Programming Emmy.
Tyson is the recipient of twenty-one honorary doctorates and the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal, the highest award given by NASA to a non-government citizen. His contributions to the public appreciation of the cosmos have been recognized by the International Astronomical Union in their official naming of asteroid “13123 Tyson.” And by zoologists, with the naming of Indirani Tysoni , a native species of leaping frog in India. On the lighter side, Tyson was voted “Sexiest Astrophysicist Alive” by People Magazine in 2000.
More recently, Tyson published Astrophysics for People In A Hurry in 2017, which was a domestic and international bestseller. This adorably readable book is an introduction to all that you’ve read and heard about that’s making news in the universe—consummated, in one place, succinctly presented, for people in a hurry.
That was followed in 2018 by Accessory to War: The Unspoken Alliance Between Astrophysics and the Military , coauthored with Avis Lang, in 2019 by Letters from an Astrophysicist , both New York Times Bestsellers, and in 2021 by Cosmic Queries: StarTalk’s Guide to Who We Are, How We Got Here, and Where We are Going , coauthored with James Trefil.
Tyson served as Executive Science Editor and on-camera Host & Narrator for Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey , the 21st century continuation of Carl Sagan’s landmark television series. The show began in March 2014 and ran thirteen episodes in primetime on the FOX network, and appeared in 181 countries in 45 languages around the world on the National Geographic Channels. Cosmos won four Emmy Awards, a Peabody Award, two Critics Choice awards, as well as a dozen other industry recognitions. Tyson reprised his role as on-camera host for the next season of Cosmos— Cosmos: Possible Worlds , which premiered on the National Geographic Channel in March 2020 and on the FOX network in September 2020.
Tyson’s latest books are Welcome to the Universe in 3D: A Visual Tour (coauthored with J. Richard Gott III, Michael Strauss, and Robert J. Vanderbei) and Starry Messenger: Cosmic Perspectives on Civilization .
Tyson is the fifth head of the world-renowned Hayden Planetarium in New York City and the first occupant of its Frederick P. Rose Directorship. He is also a research associate of the Department of Astrophysics at the American Museum of Natural History.
Neil deGrasse Tyson lives in New York City with his wife, a former IT project manager with Bloomberg Financial Markets.

Not a good idea to mix in the comedians.
I love Neil DeGrasse Tyson as well as Michio Kaku. But mixing in two comedians with them on stage was a big miss. I would assume that most people that paid for a ticket were hoping to get a night of scientific content. We go that, but mixed in with a few hundred interruptions of attempted jokes and other forms of levity. For me, it ruined the evening, as the jokes weren't funny or entertaining and completely broke up the content in a very awkward and annoying way. It's like mixing ice cream and steak. I like them both, but let one be the entrée and one be the dessert - don't serve them both on the same plate at the same time. Just my two-cents.
Smart and Funny
First, I love the Beacon Theatre. It is such a beautiful and well kept up venue. Neil deGrasse Tyson as always is very engaging with the audience. His guests added nuance to the topic, which was quantum computing. It was discussed in a way that the smartest to most unaware person in the room would understand. Tiffany Hadish and Jordan Klepper kept things light and interesting. All in all a fun and educational evening.
Sadly, not what I had hoped for
I had long since wanted to see NGT in person doing his thing and sharing his views of the cosmos. This event was not that. The evening centered around String Theory and Quantum Computing. Michio Kaku, while brilliant, was not what I waited so long to hear. The comic relief added to the presentation detracted from it instead of lightening it. We left when the Q/A began. The venue, as well, was unfortunate. Live and learn. I had envisioned being an audience to Sagan's prodigy. I ended up watching a History Channel special on Quantum Computing with Mystery Science Theatre folks on stage at the same time.
Captivating & intellectually stimulating
Michio Kaku and Neil deGrasse Tyson are great speakers. Michio was great at breaking down and explaining Quantum Computing.
Good Educational fun
The talk was such a good blend of pop culture comedy and quantum computing and well as a physics lessons. The cohosts along with NDT were good at keeping the conversation moving. Overall a very entertaining evening.
A great and educational show!
I was surprised. It was a a lot of fun to have drinks and watch a panel with different perspectives on quantum mechanics. Different than what I’m used to but a lot of fun!!
Disappointed
It wasn’t a scientific talk at all. It was a ‘comedy’. Idk why that female actress (I don’t know her name) was invited there. She had no clue about science and was just making unfunny jokes. I expected Michio Kaku to talk more about recent interesting inventions/discoveries, but he just kept saying ‘the world is changing’. A 10 minute scientific youtube video would be more informativ than the whole show. I understand that to make the show easy to understand for most people, you should’t get much into details, but this was just a disrespect to science. At least, that actress shouldn’t have been there. Anyway, if your purpose is to see some celebrities and hear jokes, you might enjoy it. But if you are interested in science, you will barely watch for 5 minutes.
Mind blowing
Very cool crowd. Absolutely incredible subject matter. Great topics and Michio Kaku along with DeGrasse super informative
I was hoping to hear more about stars and planets. Even though topics discussed where different then expected it was done in an interesting way and explained so i could understand. Often times with humor.
The greatest astrophysicists of our time
The way Neil and Michio speak about things is always great to hear and to know about the latest info of the human race and technologies, the future is so exciting

FUN FOR ALL AGES!
Fun for all ages! Our only negative is that the show did not go on long enough. Highly recommend!
THE GREATEST SHOW ON ASTO-TURF
Neil DeGrasse Tyson is great. His show is as entertaining and funny as it is informative and educational. It feels more like a friendly conversation that transitions from one topic to another very smoothly. I highly recommend going to see Mr. Tyson live.
FABULOUS SHOW!
Highly recommend! Surprisingly fun. You cannot help but hear the wheels turning in his mind. Would definitely go again, and disappointed the meet and greet was sold out. Next time, I will buy earlier!
What a great evening! Very entertaining and fun. If you get a chance to see this particular show, GO. As for some of the negative reviews, here are my answers. 1) Being late. I hesitate to blame Mr. Tyson for tardiness when at 7:30, a significant number of seats were empty. People were still streaming in when the show started. Hardly his fault. 2) The title of the show was An Astrophysicist Goes to the Movies. That should have been a clue that it would be lighthearted and not Cosmos.
SCIENCE AND THE MOVIES
LOVED IT....HOPE HE COMES BACK TO OMAHA! I WOULD GO SEE HIM AGAIN - WE LAUGHED AND LEARNED!
I’ve always been as admirer of him, but was my first time in person! And he did not disappoint; very fun and informative, enjoy hearing him talking about the galaxy and beyond & making it so fun & interesting. The show was over 2 hours, but felt shorter too. Bought his hook already too 👏🏻👏🏻
ENTERTAINING
Neil was Fabulous. He really holds your attention and is a wonderful speaker. He really knows how to engage his audience. I loved the whole experience.
WONDERFUL AND INFORMATIVE SHOW ON SPACE AND OUR DELUSIONAL EXPECTATIONS
Neil Degrasse Tyson was entertaining and informative on the topic. He has a great sense of humor and shows his human side as well. He seems to be a gracious, considerate and yet, very logical man. The show was great and he wanted to make sure we were comfortable with time. Neil definitely makes you have a different perspective on planetary and space travel and its possibilities. What a brilliant astrophysicist and man!!!
BELLCO THEATRE - NEIL DEGRASSE TYSON
I was very anxious for this event and disappointed in Neil's tardiness. While the movie information was interesting and fun, I was hoping to learn more from the event last evening. I have enjoyed watching Cosmos on Netflix and look forward to the new series. It would have been nice to have questions and answers from the audience at the end. Two hours was long and the seats were very uncomfortable. Nice socks.
DISAPPOINTING
I'll start by saying Dr. Tyson is personable and often times funny. However, my husband and I attended the show in the hopes that we would learn something. What we found was it was superficial conversation about very general topics. Perhaps we misunderstood but seriously, this was a rather juvenile presentation. We found the Q&A's at the end of the show to be more interesting than most of the presentation. With that said, the show started 1/2 hour late, which was rude. Dr. Tyson gave an explanation that he'd been traveling the world – that's great for you and I'm sure the majority were duly impressed. However, you had an auditorium full of people who paid for tickets to your show, who were not shown the respect they deserved.
DISAPPOINTMENT
Dr. Tyson is one of my heroes! The presentation Wednesday was disappointing. I don't know what I expected but this was not it. It was a tour down memory lane with photos and videos of rockets and big-fined automobiles and government funding vs private capitalist of space exploration.. Sigh
SELF PROMOTION
Tyson blind sided us by out of nowhere starts talking about 9/11. This did not fit into the rest of the show. Using photos and videos of people jumping out of buildings etc was ethically questionable at least. The message from Tyson’s pictures was look at how close I was. His comments about the physics of this tragedy were cold. I remember that day vividly and lost colleagues. To get a 57 year old man sobbing and weeping in his chair and have to leave to throw up in a performance is not ok. Shame on you Tyson. To use one of this country’s days in history to sell your book is terrible. Self promotion at the expense of respect for the dead is Inexcusable. My copy of the book handed to me is in the trash can. Shame on you. Shame shame shame
VERY DISAPPOINTING
My wife and I had much higher expectations for an educational evening. The show began with 15 minutes of political commentary on red vs. blue in Texas, COVID, and the acceptance of vaccines across demographic strata. Really Neil? We came to experience your renowned expertise and experience as an astrophysicist, not your political viewpoints! The next 10 minutes was spent promoting his books. Finally on to the show. Not serious, too many lame jokes (including farts), and more self promotion including his past tweets. If you're looking for superficial information on the universe supplemented by NASA videos and wrapped in ego and bad attempts at humor, this is your show. If you're seeking a more serious educational experience, take a pass.
MOSTLY MIDDLE SCHOOL CONTENT
When Dr. Tyson asked at the beginning of his presentation if anyone had been to one of his talks, no one raised their hand. Now I know it’s because once is enough. The first 20 minutes were political opinions with nothing to do with astronomy. Then there was the obligatory book promotion. Scattered throughout were the “clever tweets” self promotion. Finally, the astronomy was basic information easily found by reading a news site. I was disappointed as he skimmed the surface of black holes, dark energy, dark matter and quantum entanglement. I think Dr. Tyson underestimated his audience’s interest and intelligence. I taught most of his content including using some of the same videos to 8th grade science students. While he is a good speaker and very entertaining, if you are looking for deeper information I recommend skipping this “show.”
LOW SIGNAL, HIGH NOISE
First 20 mins was about his new book. Very light on interesting physics. Talked about zoolander and how you cant take off underwear just so he could show his cameo in zoolander 2 at the end. Watch his interviews on YouTube because the shows most complex science is about surface tension. Most of the show was him asking the audience if they had seen the movie and polling the children for their ages.
My anticipation and excitement for the show immediately levelled off as it began and unfortunately my interest and enthusiasm rapidly declined at an accelerating pace as it went on. The captivating scientist we see, admire and learn from in media didn’t delivery anywhere close to that impact in person on stage. The quality of the presentation was a far cry from what we’ve come to love in his media programming and it felt like he was trying to deliver a comedy show mixed with random science facts that piled on to make a point in the very end that left me wondering why it took 2 hours to make and how much of that was filler. Dr. Tyson is brilliant in all that he has accomplished and I’d hope to see that brilliance in person. It sadly fell far short of my expectations. Dr Tyson, focus on what you do best and leave the comedy act to the comedians to deliver.

Draws & Fades: Akshay Bhatia blitz sets up great chance at Valero Texas Open
Draws and Fades
Change Text Size
Akshay Bhatia has a golden opportunity to collect a pair of victory cowboy boots at the Valero Texas Open after the 22-year-old blitzed the field with an opening 9-under 63 at TPC San Antonio.
Bhatia, a winner at the 2023 Barracuda Championship, is coming off back-to-back TOUR top-20s and sits three shots ahead of his nearest competitors despite playing in the trickier winds of the afternoon.
Those San Antonio winds are forecast to pick up even further on Friday afternoon meaning the players who have afternoon tee times tomorrow could have a rougher time of things than those heading out in the morning.
The Californian is returning in the morning as the +333 betting favorite (via BetMGM Sportsbook) with a golden opportunity to kick on and chase down another victory.
Coming from the Southwest the Friday breeze is forecast at 12-18 mph with gusts up to 28 mph, picking up to its peak from noon onwards.
Justin Lower, the Thursday morning pacesetter, and Brendon Todd sit in second after rounds of 66 before another jump to Max Homa, Denny McCarthy, Tyson Alexander and Austin Eckroat. That quartet share fourth at 4-under.
Pre-tournament favorite Rory McIlroy is the biggest name of many at 3-under and is +800, six off the pace.
Bhatia ranks first in the field in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green and second in SG: Around-the-Green and SG: Approach. Only the around the green mark is distinctly ahead of his season ranks which brings more confidence in his position.
Akshay Bhatia dials in approach to yield birdie at Valero
Five of the last six Valero Texas Open champions were top four in SG: Approach and three of them led the field. Last year the top four on the leaderboard were also the top four in SG: Approach. Seven of the last eight winners were top five in SG: Tee-to-Green.
But +333 for any player with 54 holes left is a tough number to swallow. As a bettor, you must decide whether you’ve already missed the Bhatia boat or if you’re willing to ride the waves of his live numbers going forward.
I like the youngster as a potential winner from here but expect he will be above +333 at some point over the next three rounds. In other words, at this juncture, draw the player, but fade the current number. Even if he goes wire-to-wire a 3 to 1 risk seems aggressive with winds also set for Saturday afternoons lead groups.
Hopefully, Bhatia fans will get a similar number with 18 holes to play.
Here are the latest outright odds from BetMGM Sportsbook.
- +333 : Akshay Bhatia (-9, 1st)
- +800 : Rory McIlroy (-3, T8)
- +1000 : Brendon Todd (-6, T2)
- +1200 : Max Homa (-4, T4)
- +2500 : Corey Conners (-2, T17)
- +2800 : Russell Henley (-3, T8)
- +3000 : Austin Eckroat (-4, T4)
- +3000 : Collin Morikawa (-2, T17)
- +3000 : Denny McCarthy (-4, T4)
Austin Eckroat +3000 (-4, T4)
This was a mind wrestle with myself as while Eckroat is a recent winner on TOUR at the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches, he has also thrown up final rounds of 75 and 76 in his last two starts. But I’m riding the data on this one as we look for options outside of Bhatia at the top. Eckroat ranked first in the field in SG: Off the Tee, third in SG: Tee-to-Green and 10th in SG: Approach on Thursday. He sits 17th on the season Tee-to-Green and 21st in Approach so this is not out of the ordinary and can possibly be maintained. He also has the benefit of an 8:26 a.m. tee time off the 10th tee, avoiding the tough first, third and fourth holes until further into his groove.
Corey Conners +2500 (-2, T18)
The defending champion might be seven shots off the pace AND due out in the afternoon wave on Friday, but he still represents a player who has the capacity to move up the leaderboard over three rounds. Conners not only won here in 2023 but also in 2019 and clearly knows his way around the joint. His scrambling, just three of six, let him down on Thursday but improvement in his approach game is on the horizon. Check his price in the last hour before his 1:08 p.m. tee time, along with the most recent wind forecast.
Justin Lower +3300 (-6, T2)
Lower played lovely golf in the morning wave on Thursday to set a great pace and on paper a 33 to 1 number for someone close to the lead may seem tempting. But his scoring came by virtue of leading the field in SG: Putting rather than his approach play (57th). With negative season numbers in SG: Putting, SG: Off the Tee and SG: Around the Green the concern of regression is high.

On to 2024: assessment of cornerbacks.
Jaguars Senior Writer
JACKSONVILLE – Senior writer John Oehser and Jaguars/NFL Media analyst Bucky Brooks examine the Jaguars' cornerbacks in this position-by-position look at the '24 offseason
Position: Cornerbacks.
- Position coach: Cory Robinson.
- 2023 starters: Tyson Campbell (10), Darious Williams (17), Tre Herndon (4), Montaric Brown (6).
- Others: Ronald Darby, Christian Braswell, Tevaughn Campbell, Erick Hallett II, Gregory Junior, Amani Oruwariye.
Jaguars 2023 Cornerbacks Position Group At A Glance:
This was a difficult season for this position at times, primarily because Tyson Campbell – one of the defense's top players in 2022 – sustained an early-season hamstring injury that forced him to miss six of the final 11 games of the season. He registered 61 tackles – 42 solo – for the season with two tackles for loss; he had a forced fumble with an interception and five passes defensed. Williams, in his second season after signing as an unrestricted free agent with the Jaguars in the 2022 offseason, improved on his '22 season and started all 17 games. He had 53 tackles – 44 solo – with three tackles for loss and also tied for the team lead with four interceptions with a team-high 19 passes defensed. Herndon played extensively as the third corner, starting four games and playing 16; he had 45 tackles – 30 solo – and three quarterback hits with nine passes defensed. Brown, a second-year veteran, played in 12 games and started six with four passes defensed and 34 tackles.
Offseason Storyline: In an offseason of transition for the Jaguars' defense, no defensive position seems to be undergoing as much change as corner. With the Jaguars expected to play more man-to-man press coverage to take away easy completions under new defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen , the Jaguars released Williams just before the March 13 start of the 2024 NFL League Year and have opted to not re-sign Herndon. The team signed Ronald Darby as an unrestricted free agent from the Baltimore Ravens, with the 10-year veteran having a reputation as a front-line and aggressive corner when healthy. This could remain a priority position entering the draft, with many projecting the team could take the position in the first round.
Free agents as of March 13: Herndon.
Bucky Brooks' Top Three Free-Agent Cornerbacks:
- Jaylon Johnson, Chicago Bears (re-signed with Bears)
- L'Jarius Sneed, Kansas City Chiefs (traded to Tennessee)
- Kendall Fuller, Washington Commanders (signed with Miami)
Bucky Brooks' Top Three Collegiate Cornerbacks:
- Quinyon Mitchell, Toledo
- Terrion Arnold, Alabama
- Nate Wiggins, Clemson
Oehser Analysis: There perhaps has been no greater area of need this offseason for the Jaguars – not necessarily because of its inconsistency in 2023, but because the secondary's style is expected to change so much moving forward under Nielsen. The decision to release Williams and sign Darby was significant, with Williams perhaps playing as well as any Jaguars secondary player in 2023 but not a great fit for the Jaguars' new defensive scheme. Another key storyline in 2023: Tyson Campbell , who played at a high level in the team's 2022 AFC South title season but whose hamstring injury hampered him much of 2023. The thought here is the Jaguars may not be close to do done addressing corner this offseason. The position seems a real possibility at No. 17 overall in Round 1, and it wouldn't be surprising to see them address it again before the late rounds. A storyline to watch: The development of Montaric Brown (a third-year veteran) and Christian Braswell (a second-year veteran). The team likes both players, and one – or both – could develop into key contributors as the new defensive coaches seek the right secondary combination.
Brooks' Analysis: The Jaguars' disappointing season put the inconsistent play of the cornerbacks under the microscope. Campbell and Williams made a handful of plays but also gave up a ton of big plays due to shoddy technique and inconsistent concentration. With the Jaguars' aggressive approach repeatedly putting Campbell and Williams on an island, the duo's flaws contributed to the defense's demise down the stretch. Though the defense received a spark from the intriguing flashes of Brown and safety/nickel Antonio Johnson, the overall performance of the secondary did not meet the standard.

College of sciences, search form, john wise joins neil degrasse tyson at 2024 asimov debate.
Has the James Webb Space Telescope changed astrophysics? That was the question posed by Neil deGrasse Tyson to a panel of leading experts, including Georgia Tech’s John Wise , at the 25 th annual Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate.
The live event was held on March 19 at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, and while the 800 available tickets sold out within 20 minutes, the discussion is now publicly available on YouTube .
Tyson is the the Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium. He personally invited Wise, a professor in the School of Physics and director of the Center for Relativistic Astrophysics , who traveled to New York for the event alongside his wife, Emily Alicea-Muñoz , a fellow physicist and academic professional in the School of Physics.
The discussion centered on how the James Webb Space Telescope has indeed changed astrophysics, especially in relation to understanding the first billion years after the Big Bang when galaxies and black holes were rapidly forming — an area where Wise has significant expertise.
Journey to the stars
“My research group and I have been focusing on this topic for several years, so I was ecstatic to participate in the panel,” Wise says. The event was also an opportunity for the astrophysicist to reconnect with fellow experts — the panel also included Mike Boylan-Kolchin of University of Texas at Austin, Wendy Freedman of the University of Chicago, Priya Natarajan of Yale University, and Rachel Somerville of the Flatiron Institute. Wise had previously collaborated on research with several of the panelists, and Tyson is no stranger to Georgia Tech.
“Just after I received my Ph.D., my collaborators and I worked with the Hayden Planetarium at the American National History Museum to produce a planetarium show segment from my simulations of the first stars,” Wise recalls. The show segment, Journey to the Stars , premiered in 2009 and was narrated by Whoopie Goldberg. Georgia Tech also hosted Tyson in 2014 at the Ferst Center, where many members of the Center for Relativistic Astrophysics met with him.
In the spirit of Isaac Asimov’s legacy of science-oriented storytelling, this year’s debate also provided an opportunity for audience members to “eavesdrop” on robust scientific discussion – with Tyson acting as an interpreter and storyteller, explaining the technical language and helping panelists explain advanced topics.
“The conversation was fantastic,” says Wise. “Neil really brought out the best in us and our scientific endeavors in uncovering the mysteries of the early universe with the James Webb Space Telescope.”
About the Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate
The Hayden Planetarium notes that “the late Dr. Isaac Asimov, one of the most prolific and influential authors of our time, was a dear friend and supporter of the American Museum of Natural History. In his memory, the Hayden Planetarium is honored to host the annual Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate — generously endowed by relatives, friends, and admirers of Isaac Asimov and his work — bringing the finest minds in the world to the Museum each year to debate pressing questions on the frontier of scientific discovery. Proceeds from ticket sales of the Isaac Asimov Memorial Debates benefit the scientific and educational programs of the Hayden Planetarium.” Learn more and watch past debates here .

Cal's Jaylon Tyson Declares for NBA Draft
Jaylon Tyson might be taken late in the first round of the NBA draft after being a first-team All-Pac-12 selection. It means all five Cal starters from the 2023-24 team will be gone
- Author: Jake Curtis
Jaylon Tyson, the only Cal player to be named first-team All-Pac-12 this past season, told ESPN on Thursday that he will declare for the 2024 NBA draft and will not return to Cal for his final season of eligibility.
"I am going to forgo my remaining eligibility and enter the draft," Tyson told ESPN. "I am in Las Vegas getting ready right now."
The versatile, 6-foot-7 Tyson is ranked No. 32 in the ESPN 100 among NBA draft prospects, and his decision to enter the NBA draft is not surprising, because Tyson is projected to be a late first-round or early second-round pick in the upcoming draft.
However, there was hope that Tyson might enter the draft, but then withdraw his name before draft day and return for his final college season. His statement to ESPN seems to preclude that possibility.
This is a blow to the Cal program. It means that all five starters from the Bears’ 2023-24 team will not be on the Cal roster for the 2024-25 season when Cal begins play in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Fardaws Aimaq, Keonte Kennedy and Jalen Cone have run out of eligibility, Jalen Celestine entered the transfer portal this week, and now Tyson is gone. And Tyson was the Golden Bears’ best player and one of the best players in the Pac-12 this past season. Cal went 9-11 in the Pac-12 in the conference’s final season, which was Mark Madsen's first season as the Golden Bears' head coach.
Tyson, who transferred from Texas Tech following the 2022-23 season, finished third in the Pac-12 in scoring averaging 19.6 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game.
"I had a great season, statistically speaking, even though we didn't make the end goal," Tyson said, according to ESPN. "It was great to build some momentum for Cal going into next year."
"NBA teams saw that I'm a versatile guard. I can play a lot of different positions on the court. I can be a '3-and-D' player or a secondary ball handler. I even showed I can play point guard in spurts down the line."
The NBA draft consists of two rounds and will be held June 26-27.

College basketball transfer portal 2024: Ranking top 50 players as Bensley Joseph commits to Providence
Here are the best transfers in the portal so far during college basketball's 2024 offseason.
Providence landed a big commitment Friday from former Miami guard Bensley Joseph, who chose the Friars over St. John's. Joseph has one season of eligibility remaining after appearing in 105 games over three seasons with the Hurricanes.
As a veteran facilitator who played a key role on Miami's 2023 Final Four team, Joseph will help keep the floor high at Providence as the Friars bid farewell to star guard Devin Carter, who is forgoing his remaining eligibility and entering the 2024 NBA Draft.
Joseph averaged 9.6 points, 3.4 assists and 1.5 steals while shooting 36.4% from 3-point range for Miami in the 2023-24 season. Though unlikely to be an all-conference performer for the Friars, Joseph is the type of established veteran who can help second-year coach Kim English build on a 21-14 (10-10 Big East) debut campaign. The Friars finished on the wrong side of the 2024 NCAA Tournament bubble and will be looking to return to the Big Dance next season as they get star forward Bryce Hopkins back from injury.
The spring portal window opened on March 18 and will remain open until May 1. However, players who have entered the portal by then don't face a firm deadline on when they must commit. Additionally, graduate transfers and players impacted by coaching changes that occur after May 1 will be able to transfer after the deadline. Players who have also entered the NBA Draft will have until 11:59 p.m. Eastern on May 29 to withdraw if they wish to return to college for the 2024-25 season.
As players enter the portal, we will rank the best of them here. The rankings will be updated regularly as players either enter the portal or announce their intentions to enter the portal.
Check out the latest transfer portal updates from 247Sports
1. Johnell Davis
Old school: FAU
Davis played a key role in taking FAU to the 2023 Final Four and built on his breakout season by upping his scoring average to 18.2 points in 2023-24. The 6-foot-4 guard hit 41.4% of his 3-pointers, pulled down 6.3 rebounds and averaged 1.4 steals for the Owls in his fourth season of college basketball. He's only got one season left to play and is also testing the NBA Draft waters.
2. Tucker DeVries
Old school: Drake | New school: West Virginia
DeVries won Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year twice during three seasons while playing for his father, Darian DeVries. The 6-foot-7 wing averaged 21.6 points, 6.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game in 2023-24. He's a career 35.9% 3-point shooter and dynamic offensive threat. DeVries is following his father, who accepted the West Virginia job.
3. Zeke Mayo
Old school: South Dakota State | New school: Kansas
Mayo earned Summit League Player of the Year after averaging 18.8 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.5 assists for a South Dakota State team that won the conference. He's a career 38.8% 3-point shooter and scored 19 points on just 11 shots against Iowa State's vicious defense in an NCAA Tournament loss. There is a strong recent track record of Summit League Players of the Year transferring up. Max Abmas was the leading scorer for Texas this season after winning the award twice in his career at Oral Roberts. Baylor Scheierman has also been a star at Creighton the past two seasons after winning Summit League POTY at SDSU in 2022.
4. AJ Storr
Old school: Wisconsin
Storr provided a significant jolt of offense for Wisconsin in the 2023-24 season, averaging 16.8 points. The 6-foot-6 wing is a multi-level scorer with the size needed to finish in the paint and around the rim. If surrounded with other dynamic playmakers who can share the offensive burden, it should allow Storr increase his efficiency after he shot 43.4% from the floor for the Badgers.
5. Vladislav Goldin
Goldin averaged 15.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game on an insanely efficient 67.3% shooting from the floor for FAU in 2023-24. The 7-foot-1 Russian is a rugged and seasoned veteran who impacts both ends of the floor but is a particularly strong asset on offense, despite the fact that he's never attempted a 3-pointer.
6. Clifford Omoruyi
Old school: Rutgers
Entering the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Omoruyi's 93 blocks ranked fourth nationally. The 6-foot-11 center is an elite rim protector with consecutive Big Ten All-Defense honors. Omoruyi also averaged double figures in each of the last three seasons and posted 29 double-doubles in his four years with Rutgers. He can't do much away from the rim offensively but is excellent defensively.
7. Jevon Porter
Old school: Pepperdine
Porter ranked as a top-100 prospect in the Class of 2022 and earned honorable mention All-WCC honors this season while averaging 16.2 points, 5.9 rebounds and one block per game. The 6-foot-11 younger brother of Denver Nuggets star Michael Porter Jr. is a career 32.5% 3-point shooter and could get high-major interest because of his size, pedigree and flashes of perimeter shooting.
8. Kevin Miller
Old school: Wake Forest
Miller averaged 15.6 points, 3.5 assists and 1.4 steals while starting all 35 games for Wake Forest in 2023-24. The 6-foot guard is a career 36.5% 3-point shooter and hit 84.5% of his free throws for the Demon Deacons. He's been prone to turnovers but is an offensive spark plug with a proven body of work in a major conference.
9. Tony Perkins
Old school: Iowa
Perkins averaged 14 points, 4.6 assists and 1.6 steals while starting all 34 games for Iowa as a senior. Following 126 career appearances for the Hawkeyes, he should make a significant impact at his next destination. Though just a career 31.7% 3-point shooter, Perkins is a physical guard at 6-foot-4 who can attack the basket. He also rated as Iowa's top defender in the 2023-24 season, per evanmiya.com .
10. Meechie Johnson
Old school: South Carolina | New school: Ohio State
Johnson wasn't necessarily South Carolina's best all-around player. But the 6-foot-2 guard did lead the Gamecocks in scoring at 14.1 points per game in 2023-24 during his second season in the program. Johnson began his career at Ohio State and will have one season of eligibility remaining as he returns to his home state to finish out his career with the Buckeyes.
11. Darlinstone Dubar
Old school: Hofstra
Dubar is a 6-foot-6 wing who averaged 17.8 points and 6.8 rebounds on 39.9% 3-point shooting for a 20-win Hofstra team. He began his career at Iowa State , starting seven games for the Cyclones in 2020-21. As a fifth-year player with a proven shot and good size, he'll have opportunities to return to a major conference. Alabama guard Aaron Estrada is a recent example of a quality high-major player to come through Hofstra.
12. Maxime Raynaud
Old school: Stanford
Raynaud was named the Pac-12's most improved player after nearly doubling his scoring average to 15.5 points per game as a junior. The seven-footer collected 9.6 rebounds per game and hit 36.1% of his 3-pointers on 61 attempts. The drawback is how limited he is defensively for a player of his size (0.8 blocks per game in 29.1 minutes).
13. Kobe Johnson
Old school: USC | New school: UCLA
Johnson stood out as an elite defender for USC, collecting 2.2 steals per game and rating as one of the top players on that side of the ball in the Pac-12. The 6-foot-5 wing also scored 10.9 points per game in 2023-24. Though just a career 32.9% 3-point shooter, Johnson has some chops as a distributor and will be a plug-and-play veteran at his next stop.
14. Cade Tyson
Old school: Belmont
Tyson is a career 44.6% 3-point shooter on 287 attempts over two seasons with Belmont. At 6-foot-7 with a demonstrated outside stroke, he could be an impact player for a high-major program. How Tyson will translate defensively to a higher level is likely the biggest question mark here.
15. Brandon Garrison
Old school: Oklahoma State
Garrison showed glimpses of why he was a top-50 prospect and McDonald's All-American in the Class of 2023 during his freshman season at Oklahoma State. There are offensive strides to be made, but Garrison blocked 1.5 shots per game in just 22.7 minutes and has three seasons of eligibility remaining to continue realizing his potential.
16. Malik Mack
Old school: Harvard
Mack's efficiency dipped down the stretch, but it was still a phenomenal freshman season for the 6-foot-1 guard, who averaged 17.2 points and 4.8 assists per game. The Ivy League Rookie of the Year finished with 18 points and six assists at Boston College and scored 27 at Indiana during the first month of his college career. It was an impressive peek at what he's capable of against high-major opposition.
17. PJ Haggerty
Old school: Tulsa | New school: Memphis
Haggerty averaged 21.2 points on 54% shooting inside the arc for Tulsa in 2023-24. What separates the 6-foot-3 guard from some of the other volume scorers in the portal is that he has three seasons left to play. Instead of merely serving as a one-year rental, he could potentially develop into a three-year rotational mainstay. And if he develops his 3-point shot, he could be a high-level college star.
18. BJ Freeman
Old school: Milwaukee
Freeman was a busy man the past two years at Milwaukee, leading a pair of 20-win teams in scoring. In 2023-24, he also led the Panthers in rebounds (6.6), assists (4.1) and steals (1.1). At 6-foot-6, he's both a good solo shot creator and can facilitate for others. His results against high-major opposition were mixed in a limited sample size over the past two years, but Freeman can help a good team.
19. Jalen Blackmon
Old school: Stetson
Blackmon turned heads nationally with his 43-point outburst in the ASUN Tournament title game. The 6-foot-3 guard hit 38.1% of his 3-pointers on 8.3 attempts per game in the 2023-24 season and is a career 90.6% free-throw shooter. The Indiana native has only one season of eligibility remaining but has proven himself worthy of a shot to shine on the sport's big stage.
20. Gibson Jimerson
Old school: Saint Louis
Shooters like Jimerson don't come around often. The 6-foot-5 wing hit 39.5% of his 789 long-range attempts over five seasons for Saint Louis. He's got one season left to play and should be heavily pursued after demonstrating one of college basketball's most consistent outside strokes in an unparalleled sample size.
21. Jacob Crews
Old school: UT Martin | New school: Missouri
Crews shot 41.4% from 3-point range on 6.7 attempts per game as a junior for a UT Martin team that won a share of the OVC regular-season title. He also yanked down 8.2 rebounds per game for the Skyhawks. There are questions about his defense, but at 6-7 and with a good shooting stroke, he is big pickup for Missouri. The Tigers are coming off a winless SEC campaign and need help.
22. Dug McDaniel
Old school: Michigan | New school: Kansas State
McDaniel averaged 16.3 points and 4.7 assists while shooting 36.8% from 3-point range on 5.8 attempts for a bad Michigan team. The 5-11 guard also rated as the Wolverines' top defender, per evanmiya.com. Although his offensive numbers dipped against Big Ten foes, the former four-star prospect will help a team needing to upgrade its guard play.
23. Myles Rice
Old school: Washington State
Rice defeated cancer and helped lead Washington State to its first NCAA Tournament since 2008. With coach Kyle Smith off to Stanford, it was no surprise to see Rice hit the portal. The 6-foot-2 guard averaged 14.8 points, 3.8 assists and 1.6 steals for the Cougars and should have three seasons of eligibility remaining. He needs to improve his 3-point shot (27.5% on 3.7 attempts per game) and bulk up. But there is a lot to like about his trajectory.
24. Kanaan Carlyle
Old school: Stanford
Carlyle averaged 11.5 points and 2.7 assists per game in his freshman season at Stanford after ranking as a four-star prospect in the Class of 2023. His best games came against Arizona and Washington State , which were both NCAA Tournament teams. With three seasons of eligibility remaining and a proven body of work at the high-major level, there is some upside here.
25. Otega Oweh
Old school: Oklahoma
Oweh's production and efficiency dropped dramatically during the grind of Big 12 play after his sophomore season began with tantalizing glimpses of offensive promise. But while his game remains a work in progress, the 6-foot-5 wing is already a great defender. With two years left to play, Oweh is worth a swing for a team in need of perimeter defense.
26. Ja'Kobi Gillespie
Old school: Belmont | New school: Maryland
Belmont was at its best with Gillespie on the floor; he averaged 17.2 points, 4.2 assists and 2.2 steals for the Bruins. The 6-foot guard is on the smaller side but shot a ridiculous 66% inside the arc and a solid 38.7% beyond it. With two seasons of eligibility remaining, he's a good addition for a Maryland team that needs help in the backcourt.
27. Saint Thomas
Old school: Northern Colorado
Northern Colorado produced a gem last cycle in Dalton Knecht . Can it come through again? Thomas is a vastly different player but nonetheless intriguing. At 6-foot-7, he averaged 19.7 points, 4.2 assists and 1.7 steals while making 57.2% of his 2-pointers and 33% of his 3s in 2023-24. The dynamic forward began his career at Loyola Chicago and has just one season left to play.
28. J'Vonne Hadley
Old school: Colorado
Though only a role player on a team oozing talent, the 6-foot-6 wing did a lot for the Buffaloes, averaging 11.6 points, six rebounds and 2.4 assists. He attempted just 1.3 shots from 3-point range but hit 41.7% of them, and he was efficient inside the arc (56.5%). How he might translate into a larger role is tough to project, but the combination of size and skill make him intriguing.
29. Koren Johnson
Old school: Washington
Johnson earned Pac-12 Sixth Man of the Year honors while averaging 11.1 points, 2.7 assists and 1.2 steals for Washington. The 6-foot-2 guard is a career 35.1% 3-point shooter over his two seasons and also rates as a good defender for his size.
30. Tyrin Lawrence
Old school: Vanderbilt
Lawrence is a 6-foot-4 guard with 105 career appearances for an SEC program under his belt. Though just a career 28.7% 3-point shooter, he's a good defender and averaged better than 13 points per game the past two seasons. He is the type of seasoned veteran with a track record of production who could provide reliable minutes for a good high-major program.
31. Malik Dia
Old school: Belmont
Dia shined as a dynamic frontcourt player in his sophomore season at Belmont after playing sparingly during his freshman season at Vanderbilt . He averaged 16.9 points and 5.8 boards for the Bruins while shooting 34.1% from 3-point range. He's 6-9 and has surprising athleticism for a player with such a big frame. His game needs refining, but Dia's upside is clear.
32. Terrence Edwards
Old school: James Madison | New school: Louisville
Edwards was the leading scorer at 17.2 points per game for a James Madison team that finished 32-4 with a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The 6-foot-6 guard also dished out 3.4 assists for the Dukes after making significant productivity strides in all four years he was at JMU.
33. Jordan Pope
Old school: Oregon State
Pope averaged 17.6 points and 3.4 assists while shooting 37.1% from beyond the arc for Oregon State as a sophomore in 2023-24. The 6-foot-2 guard needs to improve defensively but is a proven high-major scorer with two years of eligibility remaining.
34. Skyy Clark
Old school: Louisville | New school: UCLA
After spending one season at Illinois , Clark transferred to Louisville and led the moribund Cardinals in scoring during the 2023-24 season at 13.2 points per game. His career 1:1 assist-turnover ratio is unappealing, but if the former top-40 prospect can fit in with the Bruins, he can turn things around.
35. Houston Mallette
Old school: Pepperdine | New school: Alabama
Mallette is a career 37.5% 3-point shooter on 512 attempts over three seasons at Pepperdine. The 6-foot-5 guard upped his mark to a career-best 41.5% in 2023-24 and had big games against quality foes like Indiana State and UNLV . Alabama wasted little time snatching up Mallette. His combination of size and shooting ability should make him a natural fit with the Crimson Tide.
36. Great Osobor
Old school: Utah State
Osobor earned Mountain West Player of the Year honors after averaging 17.7 points, nine rebounds and 1.4 blocks for a Utah State team that won a strong league. The 6-foot-8 big man does his work in the paint and hasn't shown much of an outside shot, but his effectiveness as an interior scorer is tremendous.
37. Danny Wolf
Old school: Yale
Wolf averaged 14.1 points, 9.7 rebounds and 1.3 blocks for a Yale team that reached the second round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament. He is more fluid, nimble and versatile than a typical seven-footer. Wolf can attack defenders off the dribble, hit 3-pointers or post up. He has two seasons left, and his rare combination of size and tools make him one of this offseason's most interesting transfer prospects.
38. Bensley Joseph
Old school: Miami | New school: Providence
Joseph played a key role on Miami's Final Four team in 2023 and upped his contributions to 9.6 points and 3.4 assists per game as a starter in 2023-24. The 6-foot-1 guard is a career 37.9% 3-point shooter and has one season left to play.
39. Michael Ajayi
Old school: Pepperdine | New school: Gonzaga
Ajayi is 6-foot-7 and hit 47% of his 3-pointers on 2.5 attempts per game while averaging 17.2 points in his lone season at Pepperdine. While Ajayi was a rebounding force for the Waves with 9.9 per game, his defense is a question mark. He should be a natural fit at Gonzaga as the Bulldogs seek to build a deeper roster after struggling with depth in 2023-24.
40. Frankie Collins
Old school: Arizona State
Collins is only a career 30.8% 3-point shooter, but he is an excellent perimeter defender. The 6-foot-1 guard led the Pac-12 in steals at 2.6 per game during his second season at Arizona State. The former Michigan guard has one season of eligibility remaining.
41. Frankie Fidler
Old school: Omaha
Fidler finished second in the Summit League in scoring at 20.1 points per game. The 6-foot-7 forward hit 35.6% of his 3-point attempts in 2023-24 and was effective against Big 12 foes TCU and Texas Tech . Max Abmas ( Oral Roberts to Texas ) and Grant Nelson ( North Dakota State to Alabama) are recent examples of players from this league transferring up and playing big roles for good teams.
42. Riley Kugel
Old school: Florida | New school: Kansas
Kugel is an interesting prospect with good tools and NBA upside; however, the 6-foot-5 wing regressed as a sophomore while shooting just 31.2% from 3-point range. If he can push that closer to 40% and cut back on his turnovers, then Kugel could blossom into an impact 3-and-D player.
43. Terrance Williams II
Old school: Michigan
Williams averaged 12.4 points on 39.7% 3-point shooting as a big wing during his fourth season at Michigan. The 6-foot-7 former four-star prospect has one season left to play and should be in high demand because of his unique combination of size and outside shooting ability.
44. Tre Donaldson
Old school: Auburn
Donaldson averaged 6.7 points, 3.2 assists and shot 41.2% from 3-point range in just 19.3 minute per game at Auburn in 2023-24. With two years of eligibility remaining, the 6-foot-2 Donaldson could be an impact player for a team with a significant role available.
45. Kerr Kriisa
Old school: West Virgina
Kriisa averaged 11 points per game on 42.4% 3-point shooting in his lone season with West Virginia. The former Arizona point guard is a veteran distributor with a proven outside shot and enough veteran savvy to be a difference-maker. He's not a plus defender but has plenty of offensive flair.
46. Roddy Gayle Jr.
Old school: Ohio State
Gayle is a physical shooting guard who can take defenders off the dribble and use his strength and athleticism to get good looks. He's just a career 33.1% 3-point shooter, but after averaging 13.5 points and 3.1 assists for the Buckeyes as a sophomore, Gayle has shown he can be productive at the high-major level.
47. Sean Pedulla
Old school: Virginia Tech
Pedulla was a mainstay in the Virginia Tech rotation for the past three seasons and led the Hokies in scoring during the 2023-24 campaign at 16.4 points per game. He is a career 35.5% 3-point shooter and dished out 4.6 assists per game during his junior year. The 6-foot-1 guard struggled with turnovers in 2023-24 (3.3 per game) but has enough offensive game to garner significant interest.
48. Adou Thiero
Old school: Kentucky
Kentucky's most effective defensive lineups often featured Thiero. The tenacious 6-foot-6 wing guards and rebounds with a voracious appetite and can score attacking the rim. He's just a career 32.3% 3-point shooter and doesn't have a refined offensive game. Still, his 80% free-throw shooting mark in 2023-24 portends promise, and he could shine if given a greater and more consistent role.
49. Eric Dailey
Dailey was a bright spot for Oklahoma State during a down season, averaging 9.3 points and 4.8 rebounds while shooting 49.6% from the floor. The 6-foot-8 forward has three seasons left to play with promise as a versatile forward and the potential to impact both ends of the floor over a three-year period.
50. Micah Peavy
Old school: TCU
Peavy rated as TCU's top defender each of the past three seasons, per evanmiya.com . The 6-foot-7 wing is just a career 26.7% 3-point shooter. But for a team in need of a versatile, veteran defensive presence, he will make a significant impact.

This was a difficult season for this position at times, primarily because Tyson Campbell- one of the defense's top players in 2022 - sustained an early-season hamstring injury that forced him to miss six of the final 11 games of the season.
