Soudal–Quick-Step's Tim Merlier sprinted to victory on Stage 1 of the UAE Tour, avoiding a hefty crash in a frantic sprint finish. Arvid de Kleijn (Tudor Pro) was second with Jakub Mareczko (Team Corratec) came third.

PREVIEW | UAE Tour 2024 stage 7 - Jay Vine and Ben O'Connor fight for overall win at Jebel Hafeet
Preview . The UAE Tour will be decided on the slopes of Jebel Hafeet, as expected. The toughest climb of the race is the main feature of stage 7 and is where the race ends; Jay Vine is the race leader but holds a very tight margin over some of his rivals including Ben O'Connor .
STAGE 7, AL AIN-JEBEL HAFEET, 161 KM .
The classic mountain stage of the UAE Tour. In the first part, the route winds through Al Ain, visiting many of its landmarks (Al Ain University, Al Qattara, Al Hili), and then takes a long desert ride to the west until it returns to Green Mubazzarah. Here begins the final ascent of Jebel Hafeet, which with its 10 km section will be the final judge of the race.
Tim Merlier wins stage 6 of UAE Tour - Belgian outsprints De Kleijn and Bauhaus to win third sprint of the race
Aside from winds there is nothing to fear from the day. It's a short day on the bike with only 161 kilometers on the menu, but the final ascent dictates this to be the queen stage most likely. The numbers aren't brutal, but very often very big differences are created in the slopes of Jebel Hafeet. 10.8 kilometers at 6.6% are the official details, but the gradients aren't as consistent as Jebel Jais.
In it's middle 7 kilometers the grades average 8% consistently, reaching as high as 11% with some steep hairpins included. Usually the main moves happen there, in what is a wide, completely exposed road which adds to the difficulty. The final kilometers have a couple of flat and even downhill sections, with some steep ramps inbetween. The final sprint will be uphill, although the late final corner has in the past seen crashes so caution must be had.
Profiles & Route UAE Tour 2024
The Weather
Strong southwestern wind, which means that throughout the day - and mainly in the hour of racing leading up to the final climb - risks of echelons are very big, as there will be crosswinds. This is dangerous, the race can be lost here for many, and surely some teams will try to do the damage.
On the opposite side, the wind will be a cross-headwind or headwind in the final climb, and strong. It is an explosive climb and in the lower slopes the mountain may cover some of it, but the closer the riders get to the summit the more exposed they are. Differences may not be so big, specially if the damage doesn't happen beforehand.

The Favourites
Jay Vine - Second at Jebel Jais, but I argue this climb suits him better. A one-effort day - he will hope - it's exactly what Vine needs. Brandon McNulty may still recover and have a god day which could make him a threat for the stage win, but if not he and Mikkel Bjerg can provide great support in the climb. Vine has to be the one matching the attacks however, but in a normal day I think he can, and the headwind will help his case. It's his race to lose honestly, but his chances are quite good.
Ben O'Connor - Winner at Jebel Jais, form and confidence are very high. O'Connor, playing it safe, has a podium in his pocket at the moment. Sandwiched between UAE riders, it will not be easy to close the 11 seconds to Jay Vine. He needs time on the road to win the race, there is no other way. He certainly will attack if he's on a good day but he has to do so from early on. He can definitely still win the GC, the gaps to other rivals are small and it will be Vine and UAE that will have the responsibility to chase late on into the headwind if other rivals attack.
Soudal - Quick-Step - The main one I would say is Ilan van Wilder , 21 seconds back in fourth place. The Belgian has serious climbing legs, last year he was under the radar because of Evenepoel but he already proved himself. He can also win the GC, Quick-Step have Jan Hirt to play or to help in the scenario in a climb that will suit him much better. A team in form, motivated and specialists in the wind, a serious threat.
TV Guide - Where and when to watch UAE Tour 2024
Lennert van Eetvelt - The ultimate wildcard. This rider was climbing with Vlasov and McNulty in January, and he was third at Jebel Jais. In steeper gradients, the lightweight could do even better, and in a climb that often ends in a sprint he definitely packs the necessary punch. A very interesting rider van Eetvelt is, he's already joined a breakaway this week to collect bonifications, and now inside the Top10 he does not have pressure to work. He can go all or nothing for the stage win and won't be seen as an immediate threat to the race lead, so can benefit from others' work. Lotto Dstny can snatch a big one to wrap off the week.
Outside of these men we have the likes of Max Poole, Pello Bilbao and Attila Valter who I personally believe can do quite well up a climb like this. Einer Rubio also finished in the GC group at Jebel Jais and without a doubt this climb suits him better. All of these are riders who can surprise towards the end if it gets tactical, whilst Bilbao absolutely has the legs to win in a sprint if necessary.
Matthew Riccitello, Michael Storer, Simon Carr, Jason Osborne, Bart Lemmen, Juan Pedro López and Tobias Foss are all riders to keep under eye, likely to fill spots in the Top10 - both stage and GC results.
2024 UAE Tour Prize Money Distribution - €300.000 in total
Prediction UAE Tour 2024 stage 7:
*** Jay Vine, Ben O'Connor ** Lennert van Eetvelt, Ilan van Wilder * Jan Hirt, Max Poole, Attila Valter, Einer Rubio, Matthew Riccitello, Michael Storer
Pick : Jay Vine

Dubai’s Craig fires bogey-free 69 at UAE Challenge

Dubai resident Oscar Craig got off to a dream start on his Challenge Tour debut, firing an impressive three under par 69 at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club during the first round of the UAE Challenge.
The 17-year-old, who secured an invite into the event after winning the Ras Al Khaimah Men’s Open, told Gulf News earlier this week that he was “nervous” ahead of mixing it with DP World Tour winners and the game’s emerging stars.
But judging by his first round performance, which included birdies on the fourth, eighth and 18, he had nothing to worry about.
"The start of the first nine, I just played really solid,” said Craig, who sits in a share of 14th at the time of writing, with the afternoon wave yet to finish.
“I didn't miss many shots, I just stayed confident on every single shot. Got to the back nine, again, my long game was strong and I felt confident with it I just didn't hole many putts. The last few holes I struggled a little bit, but then I holed some good putts so it levelled out a bit.
“Overall, I'm really happy."
Craig also has the advantage of having one of the world’s best golfers on his bag this week, with World No.11 Tommy Fleetwood, Craig’s stepdad, providing his wisdom to the youngster, just two weeks after finishing inside the top three at the Masters Tournament.
"Landed Monday night, we were here Tuesday morning, played 18 and then played 9 on Wednesday morning as well,” said Fleetwood, following Craig’s opening 69.
"Unbelievable, keep putting one foot in front of the other and keep playing like that, he'll be just fine.”

RBC Heritage: Final round suspended due to darkness, Monday finish underway at Harbour Town
Change Text Size
Updated: Monday, April 22, 8 a.m. ET: The final round of the RBC Heritage resumed at 8 a.m. ET.
Scheffler, chasing his fourth PGA TOUR win in five starts, authored a signature moment in the waning twilight Sunday, recovering from a hooked 4-iron second shot on the par-4 15th with a sorcerous wedge to 11 feet that he converted for an unlikely par to maintain a five-stroke lead over Wyndham Clark, Patrick Cantlay, J.T. Poston and Sahith Theegala.
Scheffler, chasing his fourth PGA TOUR win in five starts, stood 20 under for the tournament as the final round was suspended due to darkness at 7:45 p.m. Sunday, with nine players yet to complete the final round on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
This will be the second unscheduled Monday finish on the PGA TOUR this season and first since the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches, won by Austin Eckroat. The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, won by Wyndham Clark, was shortened to 54 holes after play was unable to be contested on Sunday and Monday.
Sunday’s play at Harbour Town was initially suspended at 4:28 p.m. due to lightning in the area. The final pairing of Scheffler and Sepp Straka had completed 11 holes at the time. Players were removed from the course, with the delay ultimately lasting 2 hours and 32 minutes before play resumed at 7 p.m.

Updated: Sunday, April 21, 5:28 p.m. ET: The final round of the RBC Heritage is scheduled to resume at 6 p.m. ET.
Updated: Sunday, April 21, 4:28 p.m. ET: The RBC Heritage’s final round has been suspended due to lightning in the area, with the final groups playing the back nine Sunday at Harbour Town Golf Links.
Play was suspended at 4:28 p.m. local time, with leader Scottie Scheffler playing the 12th hole. Players were taken off the course at the time of suspension.
Scheffler began the final round at 16 under, one stroke clear of Sepp Straka, and the world No. 1 turned in 3-under 33 with a chip-in eagle at the par-5 second, a two-putt birdie at the par-5 fifth and seven pars. Scheffler stood 19 under, four strokes clear of the field at the time of delay. Seven players stood 15 under.
“We were hoping to play through this; we felt like we had another 25 minutes left of this heavy rain and were then going to get a break on the back end,” said Mark Dusbabek, the PGA TOUR’s senior director lead TV Rules & Video Analyst, on the CBS broadcast. “We had lightning unfortunately pop up 4 miles away; just suddenly caught us in, so we had to stop play for this. We’re going to see how things go here and make a decision.
"The course was not unplayable. It wasn't because of the rain. It was just because the lightning popped up."
The final round of the RBC Heritage is poised to deliver fans a fantastic finish, but that might not come without a little bit of weather late in the day.
After the first three rounds of tournament golf at Harbour Town Golf Links were accompanied by sunshine and temperatures ranging from the upper 70s into the mid-80s, Sunday could bring golfers a different challenge to navigate as the tournament comes to a close.
According to the forecast, a cold front will be slowly moving southward into the Hilton Head Island area on Sunday, increasing the chances for showers and a few thunderstorms as play gets into the early to mid-afternoon hours and continuing into the evening hours. Storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rainfall. Otherwise, Sunday morning will remain dry with temperatures warming into the mid to upper 70s before falling into the 60s late in the day. Light wind Sunday morning will increase out of the north 10-15 gusting to 20-25 mph late in the day.
The final pairing of the day, Scottie Scheffler and Sepp Straka, are set to tee off at 1:55 p.m. ET. Scheffler holds a one-stroke lead at 16-under.

Hot Oceans Worsened Dubai’s Dramatic Flooding, Scientists Say
An international team of researchers found that heavy rains had intensified in the region, though they couldn’t say for sure how much climate change was responsible.
- Share full article
By Raymond Zhong
Scenes of flood-ravaged neighborhoods in one of the planet’s driest regions stunned the world this month. Heavy rains in the United Arab Emirates and Oman submerged cars, clogged highways and killed at least 21 people. Flights out of Dubai’s airport, a major global hub, were severely disrupted.
The downpours weren’t a total surprise — forecasters had anticipated the storms several days earlier and issued warnings. But they were certainly unusual.
Here’s what to know.
Heavy rain there is rare, but not unheard-of.
On average, the Arabian Peninsula receives a scant few inches of rain a year, although scientists have found that a sizable chunk of that precipitation falls in infrequent but severe bursts, not as periodic showers. These rains often come during El Niño conditions like the ones the world is experiencing now.
U.A.E. officials said the 24-hour rain total on April 16 was the country’s largest since records there began in 1949 . And parts of the nation had already experienced an earlier round of thunderstorms in March.
Oman, with its coastline on the Arabian Sea, is also vulnerable to tropical cyclones. Past storms there have brought torrential rain, powerful winds and mudslides, causing extensive damage.
Global warming is projected to intensify downpours.
Stronger storms are a key consequence of human-caused global warming. As the atmosphere gets hotter, it can hold more moisture, which can eventually make its way down to the earth as rain or snow.
But that doesn’t mean rainfall patterns are changing in precisely the same way across every part of the globe.
In their latest assessment of climate research , scientists convened by the United Nations found there wasn’t enough data to have firm conclusions about rainfall trends in the Arabian Peninsula and how climate change was affecting them. The researchers said, however, that if global warming were to be allowed to continue worsening in the coming decades, extreme downpours in the region would quite likely become more intense and more frequent.
Hot oceans are a big factor.
An international team of scientists has made a first attempt at estimating the extent to which climate change may have contributed to April’s storms. The researchers didn’t manage to pin down the connection precisely, though in their analysis, they did highlight one known driver of heavy rain in the region: above-normal ocean temperatures.
Large parts of the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans have been hotter than usual recently, in part because of El Niño and other natural weather cycles, and in part because of human-induced warming .
When looking only at El Niño years, the scientists estimated that storm events as infrequent as this month’s delivered 10 percent to 40 percent more rain to the region than they would in a world that hadn’t been warmed by human activities. They cautioned, however, that these estimates were highly uncertain.
“Rainfall, in general, is getting more extreme,” said Mansour Almazroui, a climate scientist at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and one of the researchers who contributed to the analysis.
The analysis was conducted by scientists affiliated with World Weather Attribution, a research collaboration that studies extreme weather events shortly after they occur. Their findings about this month’s rains haven’t yet been peer reviewed, but are based on standardized methods .
The role of cloud seeding isn’t clear.
The U.A.E. has for decades worked to increase rainfall and boost water supplies by seeding clouds. Essentially, this involves shooting particles into clouds to encourage the moisture to gather into larger, heavier droplets, ones that are more likely to fall as rain or snow.
Cloud seeding and other rain-enhancement methods have been tried around the world, including in Australia, China, India, Israel, South Africa and the United States. Studies have found that these operations can, at best, affect precipitation modestly — enough to turn a downpour into a bigger downpour, but probably not a drizzle into a deluge.
Still, experts said pinning down how much seeding might have contributed to this month’s storms would require detailed study.
“In general, it is quite a challenge to assess the impact of seeding,” said Luca Delle Monache, a climate scientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif. Dr. Delle Monache has been leading efforts to use artificial intelligence to improve the U.A.E.’s rain-enhancement program.
An official with the U.A.E.’s National Center of Meteorology, Omar Al Yazeedi, told news outlets that the agency didn’t conduct any seeding during the latest storms. His statements didn’t make clear, however, whether that was also true in the hours or days before.
Mr. Al Yazeedi didn’t respond to emailed questions from The New York Times, and Adel Kamal, a spokesman for the center, didn’t have further comment.
Cities in dry places just aren’t designed for floods.
Wherever it happens, flooding isn’t just a matter of how much rain comes down. It’s also about what happens to all that water once it’s on the ground — most critically, in the places people live.
Cities in arid regions often aren’t designed to drain very effectively. In these areas, paved surfaces block rain from seeping into the earth below, forcing it into drainage systems that can easily become overwhelmed.
One recent study of Sharjah , the capital of the third-largest emirate in the U.A.E., found that the city’s rapid growth over the past half-century had made it vulnerable to flooding at far lower levels of rain than before.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce Went on a Beach Trip With Gigi Hadid and Bradley Cooper
According to People , Donna was overheard saying Travis sent her a photo from the couples’ beach day and gave her a heads-up that Cooper would be attending the summit, too. Donna ran into Cooper at the event and said, “Travis told me you were going to be here.” She shared that Travis couldn’t attend the summit himself because he is filming his new game show, Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?.
It’s unclear when exactly the couples went on their trip and what else they did in the picturesque beach town .

Swift is not subtle about her feelings about Kelce and their high school-like romance in this love song’s lyrics.
Swift hasn’t been photographed out since releasing The Tortured Poets Department . She has been active on Instagram though, sharing positive reviews of her album.
Swift’s next concert is on May 9 in Paris. Time will tell whether Swift stays out of the public eye until then. There’s one place she reportedly won’t be though: the 2024 Met Gala on May 6.
TMZ reported last week that while Swift and Travis were invited separately to the Met Gala, both declined to go. Swift’s refusal is likely due to her tour prep.
There is a chance Hadid and Cooper could attend the Met Gala, though. If they go together, it will be their first red carpet event as a couple.
Both couples have been together for less than a year but are in serious relationships. Swift and Travis started dating in July , while Cooper and Hadid were first seen in early October .
