This entry is not for the faint of heart. The in-person version of the tour requires visitors to sign a 40 page waiver, earning the attraction the title of America’s most extreme haunted house. Protesters have dubbed the business a “torture museum,” as the experience centers around psychological discomfort. While a live virtual haunted house walkthrough is not yet available, you can watch dozens of videos that will give you an inkling of the terror. In 1924, legendary magician Harry Houdini visited the mansion on Halloween night in an attempt to debunk the paranormal legends. He left with more questions than answers, and he famously referred to it as “The Mystery House.”

Some places have instituted the use of drive-thru haunted houses but it's just not the same when your 'fear' is being carried by your own two legs through an elaborately-set up display. So while the actors might be putting their masks and FX makeup on the back burner for now, some of the world's most haunted locations are seeking a new alternative for those looking to be spooked.

Virtual tours have gained plenty of popularity over the last few months with everything going on and now, 'visitors' have the chance to explore these places, free of charge, without even leaving their own homes. Bran Castle

The home of the fictional Dracula himself, Bran Castle is now available to be toured online. Deep in the mountains of Romania, Bran Castle was said to be the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula and while tours are ongoing in-person, those of us who can't hop a plane to Europe are happy to tour this eerie castle via our computers.

The virtual tour is thanks to Google maps, which allows users to get up close and personal with every historical stone and archway. For those feeling uber inspired by the sight, feel free to add  Dracula  to the 'must-list' books to reach during the fall season.

The Lizzie Borden House

Lizzie Borden's home is said to be haunted by not only her but her entire immediate family - whom she murdered in a gruesome way (we've all heard the rhyme). In the same place where she laid an ax to her parents, visitors are drawn from all over to observe and even spend the night at what was once a crime scene. The house itself is located in Fall River, Massachusetts, and is open for in-person tours, however, some might just opt to take the online tour that's available on the house's website.

It's also a museum now and 'visitors' will have the chance to learn about the history of both Lizzie Borden and the heinous crime that occurred, for no known reason, which gave the house such an infamous and dark history. Also available on the website is a tour of the cemetery where Borden's parents are buried, as well as floor plans of each part of the actual house.

Salem Witch Museum

The Salem Witch Trials are by far one of the most infamous and well-known parts of Massachusetts history, and Salem is a town devoted to keeping the memory of its dark past alive. While the town is incredible to explore in-person (and also the setting for many a movie inspired by the Witch Trials), those wanting to learn a bit more about Salem's history can do so easily by taking an online tour of one of its most prominent museums.

The site also brings people to a home page with additional tours throughout all of Salem and some nearby towns that also carry a historical significance. A total of 25 people lost their lives due to the paranoid sparked in 1692, and several different tours can be found on the site, all revolving around the trials themselves, those involved, and its significant locations.

The Stanley Hotel

Made most famous thanks to Stephen King and his novel  The Shining  (as well as the movie), the Stanley Hotel has long-since been rumored to be incredibly haunted. Located in Estes Park, the hotel was already conducting its own haunted tours prior to social-distancing laws but this year, they've done things a bit differently. The most notorious room, room 217, is said to be the most haunted of the entire hotel. This room, as well as the surrounding hotel and its hotspot areas, area available for virtual tours via YouTube.

The Queen Mary

The Queen Mary has been featured prominently on many ghost hunting shows and for good reason: Its haunting seems to know no limits when it comes to the activity people experience while onboard. For those who want a general overview and not-so-spooky tour of the ship, Google maps offers a decent look-around in terms of virtual tours. However, for those looking to get into the nitty-gritty of the ship's hauntings, head over to the Queen Mary's YouTube page in order to have a full Halloween-themed tour of the ship.

1.  Winchester Mystery House

Sarah Winchester spent 38 years intricately remodeling her home into the sprawling 24,000 square-foot mansion . There was seemingly no architectural rhyme or reason to the property's design—there are unfinished staircases, misplaced windows, a door that leads nowhere. However, it's believed that this labyrinth-like layout intended to confuse the spirits of those killed by the Winchester Repeating Arms' guns (the company Sarah inherited from her husband's family). Finding your way out of this confusing attraction might be more challenging than finding spirits.

2.  Pittock Mansion

Henry and Georginia Pittock, who made their fortune in the newspaper industry, had plans to retire and revel in Portland's panoramic views. They began construction on an impresive French Renaissance-style château, which was completed in 1914. However, they only lived there for four years until they passed away. Relatives inherited the home, which was later abandoned and eventually damaged in the Columbus Day Storm in 1962. But residents fought to keep the property open after the destruction, and two years later, the Pittock Mansion relaunched as a museum. Some say the Pittocks are still there—after all, they truly didn't have too much time to enjoy the grounds. Don't be alarmed though: Visitors claim to see apparitions of the husband and wife duo, but they are supposedly friendly spirits. Well, that's … reassuring. 

3.  Eastern State Penitentiary

The world's first penitentiary—and most expensive, at one time—housed dangerous criminals like Al Capone, Leo Callahan and Freda Frost. Now, the menacing gothic structure is empty, though many claim there is still plenty lurking in the abandoned cellblocks. 

4.  Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast Museum

The quaint Victorian home in New England seems innocent enough, but its history is far from rosy. Back in 1892, a young woman named Lizzie Borden was accused of murdering her father and stepmom with an axe, though she was never proven guilty. If you're brave enough, you can even crash here overnight.

5.  The Queen Mary

Not all of this famed ship's passengers had a comforting experience. Just take it from the Lady in White and the man who was believed to have met his fate in the Queen Mary's boiler room, who are said to haunt the vessel to this day. Pittock Mansion

Newspaper editor Henry Pittock and his wife Georgiana built this French Renaissance-style mansion back in 1914 in Portland, Oregon. When they died a few years later, the mansion remained in the family until it was decided that it would be sold in 1958. When a storm hit in 1962, it caused a lot of damage to the mansion. Developers wanted to demolish the place, but the community stepped in to pay for it and turn it into the historic site it is today. Some say Henry's and Georgiana's spirits still linger. Yes, you can take a look at Dracula’s lair from your couch. The famous Transylvanian castle located in Bran, Romania, is most often credited for being the inspiration for Dracula’s castle in Bram Stoker’s "Dracula" novel. Thanks to Google Maps , you can tour parts of the castle online.

Mütter Museum

On April 26th, 1986 near the Ukrainian city of Pripyat, a nuclear accident occurred at the No. 4 reactor in the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. During a planned safety test, unstable conditions resulted in an uncontrolled nuclear reaction. A large amount of energy was abruptly released alongside an explosion, and for a period of 9 days, radioactive contamination flooded the area. In an effort to manage casualties, upwards of 100,000 people were evacuated from a 19-mile exclusion zone.

This event is regarded as the worst nuclear disaster in history. Though only 2 people died in the initial explosion, roughly 40 members of station staff and emergency responders passed away from radiation-related complications within the next decade. Cancer rates were shown to have increased in the nearby population as well.

Pennhurst Asylum

In Spring City, Pennsylvania sits what remains of Pennhurst Asylum , a building that formerly housed the mentally and physically disabled residents of the region. The asylum began taking in patients in 1908. Behind its doors, however, tragedy ensued. For 79 years, many Pennhurst patients suffered neglect, abuse, and brutalization. The site was finally shuttered in 1987. It’s said that to this day severe paranormal activity lingers in the halls.

Catacombs of Paris

Fort Delaware

During the Civil War, Union forces used Fort Delaware as a prison for captured Southern foes. Roughly 33,000 Confederate inmates were held within the structure, under conditions described in one historical letter as “hopeless and gloomy.” An estimated 2,500 prisoners died under Union custody here. St. Pancras New Church — The Crypt Gallery

From 1822 to 1854, the crypt of St. Pancras Parish Church was used for coffin burials. The remains of some 550 souls rest within the structure today. Preston Castle

Preston Castle is an old reform school located in Ione, California, notable for housing such wayward boys as country singer Merle Haggard and bank robber Joseph Paul Cretzer. This juvenile correctional facility was run in a military fashion, with wards splitting their time between school and a practical trade to focus on upon release. The castle was closed in the 1960s, where it sat abandoned for 40 years. It’s long been said that this landmark is haunted—by the ghost of its deceased wards, as well as the spirit of Anna Corbin, a housekeeper who was beaten to death in the ‘50s.

Winchester Mystery House

The Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California, is one of the most famous haunted houses in America. It was the former residence of Sarah Winchester, widow of the firearm tycoon William Wirt Winchester. She supposedly expanded the house’s sprawling, nonsensical architecture — which is so convoluted that a hidden room wasn’t found until 2016 — to silence the spirits of those killed by Winchester firearms. Construction on this four-storey house was unceasing from 1886 until her death in 1922. Though it’s closed, you can have this haunted experience yourself on this official video tour .

In 1986, a reactor exploded at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant near the Ukrainian town of Pripyat. Thousands were evacuated in the aftermath, and it is now a ghost town. While small numbers of day visitors are usually permitted (under strict safety protocols), that’s not now possible. But you can make a virtual visit to this haunted place , drive through abandoned streets, fly over overgrown parks, and even travelling inside buildings still filled with the belongings of evacuees. 

RMS Queen Mary

Docked in Long Beach, California, this ship-turned-hotel is said to have been haunted ever since it first set sail. Frances Glessner Lee was one of the founding mothers of forensic science, and her wonderfully and morbidly detailed crime scene miniatures are a main reason for that. She created these “nutshell studies” so that investigators could practice looking at a crime scene, and in order for them to be useful teaching tools, she had to include every grisly detail. Now, thanks to modern technology, you can tour each of her mini murder scenes yourself .

When the No. 4 reactor shut down and exploded in 1986 in Chernobyl, the whole world became aware of the horrors of a nuclear disaster. The area was so saturated with radiation that now it’s a ghost town. You can go to Google Maps and explore the area , and you don’t even have to worry about lingering nuclear fall out!

This island in Mexico is without a doubt one of the creepiest places you’ll ever see. Legend says that a local fisherman hung dolls from every tree on the island after he started being haunted by the ghost of a little girl who drowned nearby. Turn off all your lights and go on a video tour of the island tonight .

Tour the Sowden House where Elizabeth Short may have been tortured, murdered, and dissected in the basement. One of the most infamous murders in Hollywood history, Elizabeth Short, aka The Black Dahlia, was brutally murdered and dismembered in January 1947. The crime went unsolved, but the cop son of this house's former owner believes his father killed Short -- and possibly other women -- in this famous home designed by Lloyd Wright, which is available for virtual tours.

The Queen Mary has far more than its fair share of ghost stories, from lights turning on and off, to faucets running on their own, to full body apparitions appearing to guests.
